From the Editor Welcome to our July issue!

Walking around the town, it is good to see our shops, hairdressers and pubs so full of life and hearing people talking about plannig for future occasions only adds to the positivity. We wait with anticipation to hear whether we can forge ahead with planning for larger scale events including the Steam Fayre- wouldn’t it be amazing to be able to look forward to such a fantastic event this October!

Speaking of the Mill, we hope you enjoy our special feature this month sparked by John Hyde and his memories of renovating the Stotfold Mill after it caught fire way back in 1992. If you are unfamiliar with the events of the fire and the huge undertaking that was the re-build and renovation, then do take a look. It really is fascinating to learn about exactly what was involved in such a huge scale operation. The whole process from start to finish really is a credit to our town and to each and every person that worked so hard to ensure it’s safety and secure it’s place within Stotfold’s history.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, I would like to pay tribute to my neighbours Roy and Eve. As I drove up to the Co-op recently I accidentally shed my car`s hubcap without realising it. A very kind stranger drove after me into the car park, told me what I had done and that a lady had picked it up and taken it to the side of the road. He then drove off, as he only followed me into the Co-op car park to tell me what had happened! That was the first act of kindness.

I walked straight back to the stretch of road but could find no trace of the hubcap, so I gave it up for lost.

Late that afternoon my neighbour Roy knocked on our door; his wife, Eve, who had been walking back from the Co-op and recognised my car, had retrieved the hubcap, given it to him when he returned from his day`s work, and he had come round with it..... and put it back on for me! !

Now that is neighbourliness. This is why we so much enjoy living where we do in Stotfold..

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, In reference to the picture printed at the back of the June edition of the Stotfold News Magazine we instantly recognised the young girl photographed on the left of the shot dressed as a nurse as our sister Cynthia.

Our parents made the ambulance for Cynthia to pull along behind her at the fancy dress parade held at the building we now know as the Roecroft Centre but previously known at Stotfold Boys School.

We are unsure about anyone else pictured here, perhaps your readers can help? We would date the picture back to around 1936.

Fairfield Lower School

As the year draws to a close, the children at Fairfield Park Lower School have been thinking about our value humility and how they can ensure they’re being humble and supporting others. The positivity and kindness that has filled the corridors and playgrounds has been notable - well done to all! Continuing to show our school values, the Ruskin Drive site put on a fundraising fun run for a member of the school community and raised over £150. All the children and staff celebrated by wearing bright clothes, glitter, sparkles and unicorn inspired wear!

Learning has taken place in a multitude of different forms, with fantastic stop motion films being made and edited by our Year 4s to teamwork, problem solving and recreating life in the polar regions for the Year 2s. Reception children have met the Evil Pea from the Supertato series of books and have been writing their own Supertato inspired stories.

Despite COVID restrictions, the children competed in a series of Sports Days – albeit a little different from our usual traditions. While we missed the families cheering on their children, the year groups did a fantastic job in their place. The children had the opportunity to try out races, learn about winning and losing and most of all learn about sportsmanship. We are now looking to the future and preparing our Year 4s for their transitions to new schools and supporting children moving up to their new year groups and welcoming new faces to our school.

We can’t wait to meet all the new children joining and welcoming them into the Fairfield Park Lower School family.

Stotfold Watermill

If only I had a crystal ball ……..

I might be able to predict when we will be opening the mill next but at the time of writing, at the beginning of June, there still seems doubt about when Boris will announce the final stage of the current lockdown. The majority of today’s newspapers seem to be predicting a further month’s delay from 21st June so the best I can offer is a list of Sundays when we hope to be open. Visit our website, www.stotfoldmill.com, or look for the first Sunday after the government releases us.

Sundays we hope for are: June 27th. July 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th. August 1st, 8th, 15th 22nd. September 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th.

NOTE - We will not open on the August Bank Holiday weekend.

When we do eventually open there could no longer be restrictions imposed or recommended by the government, but considering the limited space around the mill we initially at least will propose the following precautions for the protection of both visitors and volunteers.

• Sanitation points are available around the mill.

• If at any point numbers of visitors in the mill or on any floor are too large, we might recommend delayed entry.

• A one-way system will be operated around the middle floor and through the tearoom • Visitors and volunteers might choose the wear face masks.

• Guides might be situated behind the barriers.

• Screens have been erected between tables in the tearoom.

• The shop will not be open to visitors but goods, including flour and oats, can be purchased through a hatch on the middle floor.

•The video presentation and children’s activities in the Ivel Room will not be available.

Hopefully, these measures soon will be able to be dropped and visitors will be able to fully experience visiting the mill in action and enjoying our wonderful teas.

Planning is going ahead for the Working Steam Weekend on 9th/10th October our live music evening, Live at the Mill, on Friday 8th October. Both events promise to be very spectacular, so note the dates and watch out for future announcements.

While restrictions remain, remember that you can always enjoy the pleasure of a walk around the nature reserve. The wildflower meadow has been in full boom and there are the young waterbirds to be seen.

This year we had eight cygnets and we very much hope they will all survive. The remnants of a gnawed fish reported as seen on the river bank suggest the possible presents of otters returning. The Teasel volunteers have been busy managing work on the site and constructing the play area for children in the Johnstan wood which is situated in the corner to the right of the entrance and adjacent to the road. Please remember that you can still enter on foot at any time but the car park is looked from 7.00pm. Please make sure you return to your car by then.

Finally, remember that the future of Stotfold Mill and the Nature Reserve is totally dependent on volunteers. Please visit our website and consider how you might give time to joining us.

Stotfold Mill - The Great Fire Of 1992

As we welcome more and more new residents to our town we are

often asked about the history of Stotfold Mill.

Known to many as the location for the Mill Fayre twice a year, many people are unaware of the great history behind the building and the amount of work that has gone into restoring the Mill after the most dreadful fire in 1992 threatened to see it disappear from our community for good.

As for when the Mill originally took it’s place in the town, nobody is certain of the exact date. It is likely that a watermill has stood on the site of the current Stotfold Mill beside the River Ivel for over a thousand years and it is certainly one of the oldest recorded buildings in the town.

In 1887, Stotfold born John Randall bought the Mill after first renting it from Charles Vaughan. Much of the mill’s development took place under John Randall’s ownership including the installation of a steam engine to increase the efficiency of the milling process.

In 1902, Ebenezer Randall, John’s son, built the Roller Mill, next door to the mill, to try to improve productivity. However, it was too little too late and could not compete with the larger mills being built locally. A diesel engine, fitted in 1954, to replace the steam engine, was another attempt to keep the Mill profitable – though by then its Derbyshire gritstones were only grinding grain for animal feed and the Mill ceased working entirely in 1966. There were many attempts to develop the Mill after it ceased production of grain, but all this ended with a catastrophic fire in 1992

Both of the photographs to the right show the dramatic aftermath of the fire which took hold of the building during the night of Tuesday 14th December 1992.

The alarm was raised by the resident of Mill House Robin Tasker after the squawking of the geese residing in the grounds woke him from his sleep. The family called the fire brigade and watched from safety as the blaze was tackled by a total of five fire engines, some called in from Kempston to help get the fire under control. In total 27 firemen helped fight the incredible blaze.

Locals reported flames of over 20 feet high with residents as far away as Biggleswade telling stories of being able to see the flames. When morning came the four storey building which had stood proud for many years was reduced to smouldering rubble with much of the Mills machinery beyond repair.

The fire bought residents out in force and very soon a small army of helpers began the task of salvaging whatever they could from the remains.

Despite the damage, lack of funding and lack of manpower many locals pressed on, urging every organisation they could think to contact to help save Stotold Mill and restore it to it’s original working state. In 1998 plans to restore the building were put to Stotfold Town Council and with their support the Mill was sold for £1 to the newly formed charity Stotfold Mill Preservation Trust.

The group continued to push forward in their search for more funding and with recruiting more local volunteers.

The first group of 13 local volunteers, many of whom are still active in their support of the Mill undertook the challenge of cleaning and preserving whatever they could from the blackened building and the restoration began to gain momentum. Original bricks were saved, original screws and fixings were salvaged and the larger parts of the machinery were assessed.

Many experts were sourced including many local engineers and much work went in to preserving what they could to limit the damage.

The Mill required a new main shaft - it was hoped the original could be saved but it was simply not possible. The new 21ft shaft was lowered into place using a large lorry mounted crane and lowered in through the roof - quite a sight by all accounts!

The task to help rebuild and renovate the Mill bought about great commandery among those involved with each of them never underestimating the enormity of the task ahead.

The original plan for the building was to ‘restore the watermill to a fully working museum showing the process and history of corn milling through the ages, using priceless historical machinery incorporated in the Mill’. The Mill would offer a tea room, a gift shop and meeting rooms where local groups could meet and educational visits could take place. Exactly what you will find in Mill Lane today.

Stotfold Mill - One Brick At A Time..

With thanks to John Hyde for allowing us the use of his personal photographs and with refernce once again to the book written by Pam Mansfield &Trevor Radford ‘They’ll never do it’.

T

he lengthy process of locating the right building contractor to take on the enormous project of restoring the Stotfold Mill began.

After tendering for the contract and supplying many hours worth of incredibly detailed drawings and proposals the contact was awarded to Stotfold building company run and owned by John Hyde.

The contract commenced almost twenty years ago to this very day on 9th July, 2001.

Using his extensive knowledge of building work and sourcing as much expertise as he could muster from contacts within the trade, John set about sourcing the right materials for the job in hand.

Each material was chosen for it’s compatibility for the job with the very best timber sourced from Scotland as part of the initial process of installing the building joists. John told the Stotfold News Magazine “we flew to Scotland to source the very best materials and transported it back on the rear of a huge lorry. It had quite a journey to reach it’s final destination.”

The huge amount of machinery used to lift the larger pieces of equipment and materials into the Mill was astonishing. Specialist lifting equipment was required with many of the items once again placed into the building through the roof. The work to restore the Mill took over ten years of hard work and determination.Tthe shot below demonstrating just how low down the building work needed to begin with the building virtually being re-built starting from the ground up.

The photograph to the right was taken from above the building and clearly shows the millstones, shaft and the machinery as it winds its way up the newly refurbished structure.

Sam Randall, (pictured left) the last operating miller at Stotfold Mill before the fire, was often known to pass by provide help and guidance to the to the team. After selling the Mill, Sam moved to a cottage at Wrayfields and often passed by the site to keep an eye on the building once owned and run by the Randall family.

The sheer volume of scaffolding (shown in the bottom right picture) was an enormous task in itself. As the building gradually began to emerge from it’s metal guarded home, locals could once agan start to visualise the building in it’s new form. For many, it was a sight they thought they would never see.

The next time you pass the Mill be sure to stop and pause. There still remains evidence of the fire from the slight changes in the brick colour. Twenty years ago this month, Stotfold was able to reclaim part of its heritage all thanks to the dedication, perseverance and hard work of many local residents.

Stotfold Mill was, and still is, such a huge part of our history and a part we should all be extremely proud of.

Etonbury Academy

At the end of May our Year 11 GCSE students completed their assessments, and Mr Matthew Harpin, Head of Year 11, arranged the leavers assembly. Shirts were signed, videos and photographs were played, the individual awards from staff and students were read out and the Etonbury rock band played for them, there were very few dry eyes in the house. It’s these times we really feel the comradery, kindness and supportive community we have here between staff and students, everyone wants the best for each other.

We are now looking forward to celebrating their years at Etonbury with a ‘Garden Party’, a theme chosen by our students and a change to the normal style.

What’s next at Etonbury this Summer Term This half term our focus is on transition for our students in Juniors Year 6 moving up to the Secondary School in September. We have also organised a Summer School, week commencing 23rd August, for our Year 6s aimed to support them with this transition, learning new skills and at the same time as having some fun with their peers. We will be welcoming our children from the lower schools joining us in September too, so they can familiarise themselves with our Junior School. As a hi-tech school, we are really looking forward to handing each of them their own brand new Chromebook to support them with home learning as an Etonbury pupil.

Improvements around the school continue, our Secondary and CAR SALES Junior children have already been enjoying the new canopies and picnic benches. We have almost completed the new ICT suite located Quality used cars & vans supplied. on the ground floor too.

Excellent after sales care, Plans for our school performances have started, and more will be our warrantees cover both parts & labour revealed in the coming weeks. Poppies &Poppyfields Nursery News Poppies and Poppyfields Nurseries and After Hours Club

Welcome to our news! We have been having a ball outside! We have made beautiful additions to both our sites! Our outdoor Bubble areas at Poppyfields has been revamped and we have added logs, bark, shrubs, pallets, friezes, mobiles and bunting! Huge thanks to M J Ryall Building Supplies, Stotfold and Callum at Weedons Tree Surgery (weedonstreesurgery@hotmail.com). We have also updated the inside play spaces!

At Poppies, we have updated our Bubble indoor play spaces, garden canopies and builders yard. We have also built a lovely new pirate ship! At both sites, we continue to work in smaller Bubbles and this will be continuing until further notice.

As the weather is lovely and warm, in nursery, we have been building dens, making considerations to waterproofing just in case!!! Children at both nurseries used the book ‘Lets Build a House’ which gave lots of ideas, including homes from around the world! Our After School clubs at both sites have also explored den making, outdoor play and making smoothies! We are pleased to say we will be running an outdoor Nature and Activity Camp during the summer holidays at our Poppies site. Staff from both Poppies and Poppyfields will be working to ensure children attending see familiar faces.

We are pleased to confirm that sessions for September can now be booked at both sites. At Poppies, this includes full days 7.45 a.m to 6 p.m, or sessional care/education for all nursery and Reception children attending St Marys Academy. For children starting St Marys Academy in September we are available for wrap until your child starts school full time.

At Poppyfields, we offer full days 8 a.m to 6 p.m, or sessional care/education for all nursery children and wrap, for children attending Fairfield Park Lower School, Dickens Boulevard site. This includes Squirrels, Reception and Key Stage 1. We are also offering wrap to children starting school in September before they start school sessions.

Pippin Pre-School As we approach the end of the academic year we would like to wish all the children leaving us to move up to big school all the very best as they begin their next exciting adventure! The last few weeks of term will be packed with fun as we enjoy all the children’s favourite activities from their time at Pippin.

At the end of June the children participated in Barnado’s Big Toddle.

The children went on a short walk around Greenacres to raise funds for this worthy charity. The children enjoyed spotting house numbers, colours of cars and some wildlife on the way. We also embraced the sunshine last month and kept ourselves busy planting our garden! Well done to Maggie and all her helpers.

I hope you have all been enjoying the sunshine, it has finally arrived and has been most welcome. A big well done to our families and their children this term, they have managed to stay focused and work hard through a very long summer term, something we haven’t done now for over a year. So, a huge well done to everyone and I hope you are all looking forward to a well-deserved summer break.

Key Stage 1 Update In Year 1, we have had a wonderful start to our Summer term and we have embarked upon our new topic 'Boats and Beaches'. We began this topic by focusing on the story 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch' and enjoyed acting this out which included some very angry seagulls!

We have been working really hard on developing our writing skills and our role play of this story then helped us to write our own retelling.

We have also enjoyed learning and reciting some pirate sea shanties in our English lessons and we had to think of suitable actions and use our best 'Roecroft Pirate' voices when performing these to the rest of the class.

In other areas of the curriculum, we continued our boats and beaches theme within art and we have been very lucky to complete two art projects. After exploring a range of artists, we created our own lighthouse silhouette artwork which depicted a sunset horizon and objects out at sea and we also carried out a Anxiety, Weight Release, 3D project. We cannot believe that we are already nearing the end of our Year 1 journey, Depression, Fears & Phobias, but it is fantastic to bring the year to a close with such a variety of exciting lessons and we Smoking Cessation, Hypnobirthing are looking forward to meeting our Year 2 teachers soon!

In the summer term, Year 2 learnt about the world through their brand-new topic 'Our Amazing World.' Later in the summer term the children had a 'Wonders of the World' topic day, learning about some of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. In their classes they did some activities based on The Great Barrier Reef, The Northern Lights and Mount Everest.

In Art, the children created some beautiful paintings based on the famous artist Henri Rousseau. They based their work on his famous painting of 'Jungles in Paris' and applied drawing, painting, collaging and printing skills. In Design and Technology, the children got the chance to make their very own stuffed soft toy by applying their sewing skills.

Year 2 had the opportunity to learn about The Stotfold Riots, which they found fascinating as they couldn't believe this event happened where they live.

Finally, the children enjoyed our usual summer events of participating in Sports Day and performing their dances on Dance Morning.

PixBrook Academy

The summer term is upon us and the staff at PBA have been working hard with the pupils to finish the year well and make sure the preparations are in place for September. As I write we are all awaiting the announcement from the Prime Minister regarding the end of the lockdown measures. Obviously as a school we are desperate to be able to show the school to the local community and undertake the normal events associated with the end of term. However should circumstances conspire to prevent this we have contingencies in place. One of the real learning points of this period is that where there is a will there is a way and in contrast to this time last year we are all much more familiar with the vagaries of virtual meetings!

The last term has included some really inventive teaching and I’m delighted that our pupils have been able to take advantage of this. The interactive workshop undertaken by University College London showing how fossils are formed including the use of 3D glasses exploring their formation, was really impressive. The opportunity to hear from an expert in their field talking directly to the class just shows what is possible when the technology is seen as an opportunity.

I have also been delighted to see the maturity shown by the Y6 pupils in their questions and thoughts around our class text of “Boy at the back of the class” by Onjali Q Rauf. This tells the story of a refugee who joins a school in the UK from Syria. There are many important lessons and topics for our young people to learn from this and as a school we are always looking for ways to broaden children’s awareness of the world around them and help them to better understand our collective responsibilities to others. One of our core values of being “socially responsible” is encapsulated in literature of this nature and teachers are mindful of the need to appropriately educate young people of the world around them.

This term we are taking advantage of the Wildlife Trust “Random Acts of Wildness” project. This involves undertaking a different action related to the wild for 30 days. They are all very simple but also really effective at reminding us how lucky we are. Earlier this week we took the opportunity to simply look up at the clouds and see what shapes were there. If, like me, it is years since you have done this then my advice is take the time to do so. It takes you back and simply slows everything down to a simpler time.

St Mary’s Academy

At the time of writing this it’s early June and we all really hope the warm weather continues.

Before the Half Term we held our Creative Arts week with some amazing artwork produced and much fun had by all! As always please view our website for up to date pictures and news! In June, our Year 4’s really enjoyed an outdoor activity day including a climbing wall, low ropes activity, inflatable assault course and many more team building exercises. They loved it! A lovely memory, following a difficult period, due to the pandemic. Our Year 3 children have continued with their African drumming lessons and the whole school enjoyed posting videos of their creative art week activities and a class summer song!

Our transition arrangements for our new children due to start school with us in September have all been well received with the children partaking in a fun teddy bear picnic as well as a number of story time and stay and play sessions. This has given everyone the chance to meet class friends, our teaching team and other families, as well as get a feel of our fantastic Foundation areas. However, this will all be a memory by the time July Stotfold News arrives on everyone’s doormats.

It’s amazing how quickly July comes round each year, but, being St Mary’s we still have a lot going on before the end of the school year!

All of our children are excited to take part in a planned Olympic Sports Week which we hope will include our parents – for the first time in over a year! We are also hoping to enjoy a whole school ‘trip to the zoo’ but staying in our school grounds with Ark Farm and their many petting animals, bringing the experience to us!

There will also be a number of transition events for our older children as they experience school life in their chosen Middle Schools as well as a ‘Step Up’ for all years planned for Friday 2nd July. The end of term wouldn’t be complete without our whole School Fun Day and Year 4 Leavers Events, where everyone has a chance to reminisce, have fun and wish everyone well for the future.

May we take this opportunity to wish everyone a very pleasant Summer break.

The new school year begins on Monday 6th September, which we hope will be back to normal.

We hope you are all keeping well, and by the time you read this blog, everyone will have enjoyed some pleasant weather, long may it continue, so we can explore the great outdoors.

It’s been a while since our last update, and regrettably we had to close the shop for longer than we would have liked. Thank you all for bearing with us. Lots of progress has been made in the last month or so.

We have had a new floor laid in the preparation room, making it much safer and easier to clean. Both the shop and prep room have had a fresh coat of paint, making everything look brighter. In addition following a recent visit from the Central Bedfordshire Food Standards, we have once again retained our 5* hygiene rating, which we are pleased about. As the good weather continues meat for the BBQ has been very much in demand, keeping us busy. Ever popular are our pork ribs, chilli cheese burgers, regular burgers, kofta’s and of course our selection of sausages. We can put packs together for you to suit your requirements -call at the shop, or send us a message on Facebook.

We are pleased to welcome Tony back in the shop on a Friday and Saturday, I know many of you have asked after him, so come on in and say hello.

Fairfield Art Group News & Information When discussions originally started about an art group in Fairfield Community Hall, limitations were in place and we expected to be limited to 15 people per session. Fortunately, those limits have been eased as several weeks before the first session, there are already 14 names on the list. Luckily the venue is both large and airy, so the group can accommodate many more people.

Whether you paint regularly or haven’t touched a paintbrush since school, you will be very welcome.

The group is friendly and sociable, and although there is no formal teaching, advice and support is available if needed.

You can just come along to one of our fortnightly Monday morning sessions 10 am – 1 pm. In July, we will meet on 12th July and 26th July.

As we all look forward to what we hope are safer, sunnier days we have planned our Open Day this year for Saturday July 17th from 10am to 2pm.

Our families and local community have been amazingly supportive during these very troubled times and incredibly understanding and compliant with the government restrictions that have been in place, this is our chance to say thank you personally.

As well as the staff here at Memoria, representatives will be present from MacMillan cancer research who are the benefactors of our charitable project this past year and we will be presenting a cheque to regional representatives. There will also be other local charities here on the day and further details of these will be posted in due course, your support for them would be so very welcome. Dear Anna, Is it better to go to a vet where you regularly see the same vet and they get to know your pet or is it just as good going somewhere where my dog will see a different Vet each time?

Hi Hannah, That’s a really interesting question! There are many benefits to seeing the same vet, as they get to know your individual animal’s personality and health concerns, and this also allows rapport and trust to be built up with you. Having said that, having other vets involved widens our professional perspective and can lead to different ideas and treatment options, as all vets have slightly different areas of expertise. A good practice will also have a team of vets who communicate with each other regarding cases, so even if seeing a different vet on occasion they will often know about your animal. There are many other factors to take into account when choosing a vets that is right for you- the experience of the veterinary surgeons, whether they have vets with advanced qualifications, the level of services offered, standard of care, the facilities available, opening hours, out of hours availability and so on. I always think it’s a good idea to visit a few that are close to you and get a feel for them, ask about all of these things, and check out their website too!

My dog has a lump under his eye above his top teeth - causing no pain but it’s rock solid. he’s been on 7 days antibiotics and it’s reduced by half, we are having the antibiotics extended to hopefully clear it up. It is a good sign that it’s reducing and does this mean it’s less likely to be something we were dreading?

Gosh, your poor dog, I totally understand your concern for him.

Unfortunately I cannot comment on specific cases that I haven’t seen, however a reduction in size is encouraging. I would recommend a checkup at the end of the antibiotic course with your vet, who can guide you further depending on the response to the treatment course.

Every dog has a slightly different habit when it comes to their toileting, and it can vary depending on the food they’re eating! My dogs poo 2-3 times a day on their regular food, but 4 times on some foods! If the poo is firm, with no blood or mucus, and your dog isn’t straining then it’s most likely normal. I would start to worry if the frequency of pooing increases along with a change in its appearance, and also if your dog is losing weight despite no change in food.

JAPANESE TACO RICE Ready in 20 mins Serves 4

Ingredients 350g dried long-grain rice 6 spring onions, sliced, plus some shredded to serve 2 large peppers (red and green), deseeded and diced, plus few shredded to serve 750g 5% lean beef mince 1 tsp Bovril or beef liquid stock 2 tsp tomato puree 1 1/2 tbsp oyster sauce 2 1/2 tbsp light soya sauce 1/2 tsp garlic granules 1/2 tsp chilli powder 1 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp paprika 1/4 small iceberg lettuce, shredded

For the salsa 300g cherry tomatoes, quartered 1 small red onion, quartered and thinly sliced 1/2-1 red chilli, to taste, deseeded and chopped 2 tsp rice vinegar

Method Cook the rice according to the pack instructions and drain well.

Meanwhile, put the sliced spring onions, diced peppers and 3 tbsp water in a large non-stick saucepan. Cover and cook over a medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes or until just tender. Uncover the pan, increase the heat to high and add the beef. Stir-fry until it's no longer pink, breaking up lumps with a wooden spoon.

Drain off any fat. Add the Bovril or stock concentrate, tomato puree, oyster sauce, soy sauce, garlic granules and spices and simmer for 5 minutes or until most of the liquid has disappeared. Meanwhile, mix all of the salsa ingredients in a bowl with a little salt to taste and set aside. Divide the rice between plates. Spoon over the beef mixture, top with the shredded spring onions and peppers and serve hot the with the rice, lettuce and salsa.

Methodist Church

Methodist Church news - “God gives us what it takes”

The Methodist Church is continuing to run fortnightly Sunday morning services at 10am. I’m preaching 11th July and my colleague Jennifer Rogers is preaching on 25th July. As a church we are thinking about other activities going forward, but that depends on how restricted we are. It also depends on what people think they’re able to do.

I’ve been working with a colleague and opening up some church rooms that we’d not been in for over a year. We found papers from church services from early 2020 and plans for activities that didn’t happen. It was overwhelming and strange looking back almost to another time – so much was going to happen that we could not have predicted. One outcome can be a lack of confidence in oneself or in the things that one used to do. This is true for church and any voluntary organisation and also with people that have been furloughed and going back to work. Or for us as individuals.

There’s a verse in the Bible (from a document known as the second letter of St. Paul to the church in Corinth) that encourages me when lacking confidence: “Christ makes us sure in the very presence of God. We don’t have the right to claim that we have done anything on our own. God gives us what it takes to do all that we do. “ (2 Cor 3:4b-5,CEV). I like that way of putting it: “God gives us what it takes”.

So, as things continue to change, may we each find faith to believe God will give us what it takes to do what we are called or asked to do.

GRASS CUTTING The grass cutting of verges around the town is now well underway, and we repeat our request for residents not to drive or park their vehicles on the grass verges. This includes asking any contractors you may have visiting your house to carry out work, not to park or store their materials on grass verges. Parking or driving vehicles on the verges damages them, creates trip hazards, looks unsightly, and is a danger to pedestrians and also prevents our contractor from cutting the verges safely and correctly. Allowing contractors to deposit materials such as building blocks, stone, etc on grass verges not only creates difficulties for our grass cutting contractor, but also can result in stone being flicked up causing damage to adjacent vehicles or property or causing injury to passers-by. Thank you for your consideration.

DOG FOULING Stotfold Town Council is working with Central Bedfordshire Council to highlight problem dog fouling in the town, and we are asking residents to advise us of locations you consider to be the worst dog fouling areas. CEMETERY GARDEN OF REST We acknowledge the poor state of the Garden of Rest at the top of the Cemetery, and that getting appropriate works carried out to rectify this has taken some time. We apologise for any upset that this may have caused families of those interred within this area but are now pleased to be able to advise that work to bring this Garden of Rest back up to standard is about to start – we have instructed a contractor to replace the rotten wooden sleeper surrounds with brick, and work is due to start mid to end of June. To increase our availability of ashes plots, we have also created a new, ‘slabbed’ type Garden of Rest, also in the Beacon Section (similar to the layout and design of the Lower Garden of Rest on the Mill Road boundary). This section allows families to place plaques as well as vases, the wooden, soon to be walled Garden of Rest only permits plaques due to the size of plots.
