Stotfold News Magazine appy 20th Bir thday to us!
lcome to our special niversar y issue where we ke a look back at where it l began! It seems only ight that this month’s Editors note should be shared with Claire, the original Editor and founder own (past) Editor ’s note on the opposite page!
It is safe to say that the last ten years have brought us a huge variety of interesting and exciting oppor tunities, as well as a fair few challenges along the way We have thoroughly enjoyed immersing ourselves into the local community and we hope that you will agree, we have delivered on our promise to develop an already extremely well put together local magazine Whilst it is hard for us to name all the many wonder ful highlights we have enjoyed, some things really d stand out for us which we wanted share with you as a look back at some of the reasons why we love being able to do what it is we do!
Firstly, featuring the infamous whit squirrel on our front cover will always hold special memories as we managed to earn Stotfold some national press attention along the way! Our squirrel loved the attentio
We were also incredibly for tunate to be able to help reunite some WWII war medals found along Arlesey Road a few s ago with the family of of our local war veterans We e so pleased to be a par t of s wonder ful find! stly, a ver y special time for us as being able to play our par t sisting the family of young than in setting up a undraising page and helping hem to make some nvaluable memories whilst he pent time at Keech Hospice e were so grateful to our aders for their suppor t
Alongside all of this, we have also thoroughly enjoyed taking par t in some fantastic local events, Mill Fairs and Christmas Switch On occasions - A special mention must o to last year ’s Annual Town Meeting where we eceived the Stotfold Town Mayor ’s Special Community Award, recognising the work we do over nd above producing the magazine - An award we will easure for years to come.
Another special memor y for us was helping to reunite lovely Ber t with his trusted garden chair, stolen from outside his front door. We found ourselves in hot water having to explain why we were actually retrieving something from the local fly- tipping site (something the local enforcement officer had never encountered before surprisingly!) All was well that ended well and Ber t was able to enjoy his chair once again thanks to some eagle eyes Stotfold News readers and an understanding enforcement officer!
Congratulations Stotfold News!

Dear All,
Firstly, I would like to congratulate Joanne on the 20th Anniversar y of the Stotfold News Magazine When I star ted the magazine back in 2005 I had no idea it would endure for so long, or how much it would become par t of Stotfold life You have done such a good job over the last ten years and I couldn’t have passed the magazine into safer hands.
I can still remember how much hard work was involved each month, and it’s so good to know that the publication continues to go from strength to strength.
The magazine is such a useful resource for the residents of Stotfold, and over the years I have come across many other local magazines that just don’t compare! The suppor t of all the adver tisers and the generous time and effor t of the deliver y volunteers have been essential for the sur vival of the magazine, and have cer tainly never been taken for granted
Thinking back, my favourite par ts of producing the magazine for 9 years and 11 months were meeting so many lovely people, and enabling the personal messages, ar ticles and connections that made a positive difference to both individuals and local organisations
As Stotfold continues to grow, keep up the fantastic work ever yone, and here’s to the next 10 years!

Dear Stotfold,
It has been two years since I was elected to ser ve you at Central Bedfordshire Council at the local elections in May 2023. My term is until May 2027, so now is a good oppor tunity for mid- term reflections and to give you some insight to the life of a councillor at CBC.
The first year was a steep learning cur ve, familiarising myself with the many different depar tments within council and forming the relationships with the officers that do the key work As your ward councillor it is impossible to be an exper t on all aspects of council life The politicians at CBC set direction and policy, while the officers enact that policy I learnt quickly that however much I want to drive for ward the best interests of the people of Stotfold at pace I had to work with officers within the framework of policy and the law A key requirement is to understand the challenges of our residents and shape how council broadly meets those challenges
There is no single aspect where this is more relevant than setting the annual budget This is a complex process that dominates the early par t of the calendar year I have spoken often about the financial challenges encountered by all local councils Understanding all the implications when balancing council ser vices against these budget limitations and your council tax is the most challenging decision of the year
This year I voted against the council revenue budget and abstained from a call to raise council tax
On a more positive note, I have been honoured to learn from and work alongside some fantastic, knowledgeable colleagues, and to build relationships with your Town councillors When my original Independent Group split in Spring 2024 I was proud to align myself with the 12 other councillors in The Central Bedfordshire Community Network These were people in which I recognised my own values and could see were working hard to put local communities are the hear t of their decision making.
I have the privilege of attending some great events with the town. Highlights for me have been being asked to read at the Stotfold Mayor's Civic Ser vice, the opening of Etonbur y sixth form block and the commemoration at the annual Remembrance Day parade.
As I ser ve my next two years, I look for ward to meeting even more of you as I continue to represent you at Central Bed Council
On the 6th of Februar y 17-year-old Stotfold student Evelyn Walker collapsed at school She had suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. It was completely out of the blueshe had never previously shown any symptoms of being ill, and there was no warning Evelyn was exceptionally lucky Her teachers and the School Medic at The Knights Templar School in Baldock per formed CPR immediately and deployed the school defibrillator The brave and swift response of Evelyn's school who per formed the 'chain of sur vival' until the emergency ser vices arrived, undoubtedly saved her life.
The East Anglian Air Ambulance attended – alongside several ambulances and the police - and together they
stabilised Evelyn and transpor ted her safely to hospital. Evelyn went on to spend nine days in Intensive Care and almost three weeks in hospital, under the amazing specialist care of Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the Royal Papwor th Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. She has been fitted with an Implantable Defibrillator which will protect her should this ever happen again Most of us could never imagine this happening to us - and yet:
• 12 young people (under 35) die from a sudden cardiac arrest each week in the UK. Many, like Evelyn, have never previously shown any symptoms of being ill
• Less than 10% of people sur vive an out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest
• Two of the most impor tant factors which influence sur vival include the time between cardiac arrest and attempted CPR and early defibrillation
The enormity of what has happened to Evelyn is now star ting to sink in. She knows how lucky she is and now she wants to use her experience to save more lives Together with her school, family and friends, Evelyn wants to raise awareness that a cardiac arrest really can happen to anyone, and that we all need to know how to do CPR and use an AED (automated external defibrillator)
She has already shared her stor y with local Stotfold residents at AED training held on 15th April in the Greenacre Centre and is working with the Anglian Air Ambulance to organise training for her fellow Sixth Form students. As a direct result of Evelyn’s experience, Evelyn’s Mum realised that many of the hear t suppor t groups and resources focus upon older people Evelyn’s Mum is now working on a new online community 'Young Hear ts UK' to provide a space for young people with hear t problems/young cardiac arrest sur vivors to connect and chat If you know anyone who might be interested in joining this community, please direct them to: https: //www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61574758809426
Evelyn and her family also want to ‘give back’ to the charities which have helped them and to raise essential funds to help save lives. Evelyn’s Dad is planning to run another marathon and Evelyn and her Mum are planning a programme of fund-raising activities with the goal to raise at least £1500 to be split equally between East Anglian Air Ambulance, The Sick Children's Trust (who provide free -ofcharge 'home from home' accommodation for families) and The British Hear t Foundation (who are doing incredible research into sudden cardiac arrest).
All money raised will be presented to each charity by Evelyn
1) Learn or refresh your CPR skills
2) Familiarise yourself with how to use a defibrillator This simple 15-minute training from British Hear t Foundation provides the basics: https://lnkd in/eZDvCrec
3) Find out where your nearest defibrillator is to your home
4) Consider making a donation to Evelyn’s fund: https://www justgiving com/crowdfunding/jennifer-walker2/admin?newPage=true
Please give what you can to suppor t Evelyn and these amazing life - saving charities - and ensure that you refresh your CPR/defib skills - and know where the nearest AED is to your home It may save the life of someone you love

1 Nathan, you have adver tised with us for many yearshow long have you lived in Stotfold now?
I have lived with my family in Stotfold for 26 years now, originally coming from Battersea at a ver y young age (6) with my parents to letchwor th in 1979 then to Stotfold in 1999
2. It looks as if the better weather is on it's way (fingers crossed) we are guessing that working outside must come with it's own perks at this time of year! We'd love to know what your choice of listening material when the sun is shining? This is a difficult one for me to answer, simply because I love most types of music and I am often caught having a boogie while working!
3. For those people that enjoy their garden and keeping it in tip-top condition have you picked up any handy tips for keeping our decking fresh and in it's best condition throughout the year? The Best thing to keep decking in good condition is to keep it clean so there is no build up of algae which can make it slipper y and dangerous also regularly check for damage and treat it regularly.
4 We like to find out about the people behind our local businesses and how they came to do what it is they do? Were you always interested in this as a career choice or did you (like most of us) come to do this by accident? Like most people I came to do this rather by accident! I used to do proper ty maintenance, then kind of fell into this I love doing what I do as I really do enjoy being outside and meeting new people all the time
5. We're guessing your job is made harder for you once the great British weather decides to turn bad!..If you could choose to spend the colder days in nicer climates where would you pick and why?
If I could go anywhere I would probably go to Spain or somewhere warmer than the uk (which often isn’t hard! it would only be for the winter months however as I would miss home. I do love the UK just not in winter! You can contact Nathan on 07490 715009 (or see the adver t below)

As we enter the warmer, sometimes sunnier seasons, the sensation of sun upon our warmth star ved selves can feel like absolute MAGIC! Yet, like most things in life, we cannot guarantee the presence of sun irrespective of season Or rather, the sun is always present but not always visible And when it is not, those with the most sensitive of systems may feel its absence more keenly
Will we whine when the sun does not shine, or will we cultivate the sunshine within? While this sounds super cheesy, it is nonetheless true that the more we commit to creating lives that we want to live fully, the more our internal light will keep us lifted
There is much we cannot control in life whether externally or the way our internal systems are programmed with their own par ticular sensitivities But what each of us can do is to nur ture that which nourishes us at the deeper levels. Whatever makes our system breathe a sigh of relief/release, lightens our spirit and shifts the energy in our body. That which makes us feel lighter helps us manage all that leaves us feeling heavy.
These lighter, longer days of May can remind and refresh our ability to notice what lifts or lowers our moods, for the simplest of treats can transform our experience. For me, being under the expanse of sky, watching the wildlife and listening to birdsong helps me to stop and be The sight of new shoots of life appearing in the garden or flowers opening inside the house, evokes great excitement in me! And the bird app Merlin provides a whole new world of wonder; it listens then identifies the local winged singers by name and image What lights you up?

Spring is with us!
Our quote of the month helps us teach children about the balance of nature and to use their senses to understand the world around them. Children have been watching blossom appear, birds nesting and bulbs springing into life
We have been planting seeds and talking about what they need to grow We have also encouraged our children
to look at growth and change, including butter flies, chicks, frogs, sheep, and lambs. Following on from this, children looked at their own growth, comparing baby photos and measuring themselves on a giant beanstalk! Children have gained a good insight into healthy eating to suppor t their growth, and we will be growing salad crops for them to eat in the summer
Our new families have settled beautifully into Poppies life this term, with their children exploring our gardens, our forest school activities and our Spring activities Our breakfast and after school children have been equally busy, with spor ts activities, den building and fun with Spring
inspired paints and crafts!
Value of the Month: Empathy
Quotes of the month: “Spring is the time of year when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade”
Charles Dickens

Welcome to our update for May.
Almost halfway into 2025 and the time continues to fly by Summer term has been incredibly busy, as it always is There has been a constant steam of trips, events in school, residentials and special themed days – all of this alongside a packed curriculum This month our Key Stage 2 cohor t are updating us on all of their exciting Spring term learning
In Year 3, we have been learning about keeping fit and healthy We have been finding out how exercise affects our bodies and how to make healthy food choices We enjoyed checking our own fitness levels in PSHE and in DT we planned and made our own pizzas, using healthy toppings We loved getting messy with flour!
We finished the Spring term with a trip to the STEM Discover y Centre in Stevenage This provided a fantastic oppor tunity to explore areas of Science and Technology and the children had a great time working with interactive exhibits covering the themes of Space, Energy, Materials, Forces and Magnetism
We also got viewing access to the Mars Yards test area, where we got to view the prototype rovers that Airbus engineers are testing as par t of the ExoMars project They also got to create their own rockets and launch them, which was really exciting!
In Histor y, the children have been learning about the Vikings and AngloSaxons. The children loved learning about Viking warriors and the longboats they travelled in We read several Viking stories and legends, and the children wrote their own versions of ‘Thor ’s Hammer ’ We also per formed a song about the AngloSaxons and Vikings which was great fun!
In Year 4, we have had an exciting star t to the Summer term and the children's last term at Roecroft In Histor y, we are now exploring the Ancient Egyptian society and beliefs We are looking for ward to our immersive topic day where we will dress for the occasion and even get to reenact a Pharoah's burial! In English, the children have star ted reading ‘Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx’ and using their new-found knowledge of pyramids, Egyptian gods and society to create their own mysterious Egyptian my ths.
through the woods, archer y tag, low ropes agility courses and even fire lighting. The children relish the chance to stay away from home for the first time with all their school friends
The children continue to have lots to look for ward to in the coming months; as well as celebrating the end of their time at Roecroft, we have our annual dance morning and the chance to complete a Bikeability training course, helping get the children ready for their journeys to their middle schools in the new academic year
Thanks for reading, with warmest wishes, Mrs Cross
Grounds week was a great success and we now have new bug hotels, animal homes and planters around the school We are looking for ward to the wildflower garden growing with help from the seed bombs made in Year 3

We look for ward to updating you on our news in the June issue when we will be in our final term of the academic year!
It is with a variety of thoughts that I write this piece from Pix Brook Academy Over the last (almost) seven years I have shared my thoughts and aspirations regarding PBA with the Stotfold and Arlesey community via the Stotfold News
As a local resident of Stotfold and inaugural Principal of the first Free school in Central Bedfordshire I have been uniquely placed to consider the impact of a new school in a town such as Stotfold. From next term the situation will be different, a new Principal will be in place to take the school for ward over the next few years. While I will remain in post until the end of the summer my role will change significantly and I know that these next few months are all about preparation for the next academic year
While it is extremely odd to imagine not arriving at the school ever y morning, I am pleased to say that a great deal of work has been under taken this term to ensure that as much as possible is in place for September
Parents will find out their school allocation over the Easter period and we have been busy making the necessar y adjustments in terms of staffing Next year we will have a school with pupils in all seven year groups, over 1000 pupils and a commensurate number of staff, both teaching and suppor t. Pupils in our oldest year group will be well under way with their GCSE preparations, including mock examinations and development of coursework requirements. Our primar y colleagues are also continuing with the usual SATs preparations and pupils have been working extremely hard. In terms of other activities, it was great to see so many of our year 9 & 10 pupils under take the practice for
the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award The award includes a variety of elements including community work and it is fantastic that so many of our pupils want to be involved
We have also star ted our programme of trips and visits for GCSE pupils including the Geography trip to Walton on the Naze and the trip to the Tate Modern for our GCSE Ar t pupils. There are fur ther activities planned for Histor y, Drama and English. Next year we have been able to expand our GCSE offer and will include GCSE Music and Philosophy and Ethics to our current offer.
The per formance of “She kills monsters”, was per formed during the last week of the spring term and huge congratulations must go to the pupils and staff involved As with all things extra -curricular the benefits to our pupils are obvious and the confidence and simple enjoyment of under taking these experiences is why so many staff are prepared to give up their time The same applies to our spor ting programme that continues to grow with training and matches occurring regularly Our focus on maximum engagement so that those pupils who train get to represent the school is something I am pleased has been embraced by our PE depar tment
It’s been a really busy time at school, not just over the last month but over the last few years, but this is as it should be. The responsibility of educating the future generations is not something that can be done in a half-hear ted way and I am so immensely proud of the work under taken by all staff and pupils at PBA.
Next term will be different in so many ways, but what I know will be the
same, is the commitment and effor ts of this community: staff, pupils, Trust and parents to continue to do ever y thing possible to educate the socially responsible citizens of the future
Summer term is one of our busiest terms with the final push towards Year 6 SATS, GCSE’s and A Levels Inter ventions and suppor t are running ever y night after school, across multiple subjects and year groups as the staff suppor t learners in the last few weeks before the examination series begins
We wish them ever y success and look for ward to celebrating their achievements with them
Our students are now enjoying the school field at break and lunchtimes and we have also released the summer term extracurricular clubs schedule, as always, it's full of activities for the children to enjoy during lunchtimes and after school.
With the recent introduction of our new cloud-based system Bromcom, all club details should now be published in one place which allows our students to also sign up for the clubs via the app too
We are delighted to share that applications for enrolment at Etonbur y
Sixth Form for September 2025 are still open on our website If you have any questions, please do contact our Head of Sixth Form via email cdowden@bestacademies org uk
The children joining us in Year 5 this September have now received confirmation of their place here at Etonbur y Academy and we are looking for ward to welcoming them to our school and community If you are still considering your child’s school please do get in contact with us
Did you know we have the best GCSE results in Central Bedfordshire for two consecutive years? If you are looking for a Year 9 place for your child in
September 2025 we do still have limited places available, please call the School Office to book a tour
We are always happy to show prospective parents, carers, and pupils around our academy We also welcome in year admission enquiries for all school years Please call our main reception for fur ther details and to speak to our admissions team

saying it but that really was a busy month We were able to distribute some 818 food parcels and 400 top up bags of food, that other wise would get binned The estimated total of food is valued at over £55,000 which is massive None of it would be possible, without the amazing help we get from our suppor ters and as I’ve said before the brilliant volunteers, who work tirelessly for the project throughout Central Bedfordshire, at our hubs and best before points We really couldn’t manage without them.
We are continually tr ying to to source food and have made some great contacts but are always seeking more. Our followers on Facebook are always quick to answer our call and never let us down, thank you all.
Now, moving onto our move. All I can say is we are ver y close to exchanging and then we will be able to star t work on, God willing, our permanent home. Our priority has and always will be first and foremost, our food provision and in the future, when we have the money, we will develop our community space and cafe area upstairs (which we are ver y excited about, and the drawings look incredible!)
Because people are aware of our future plans in Stotfold, it has been amazing the suppor t we are getting, with people asking and small organisations and individuals raising money for the future development of the new building
That suppor t and genuine kindness makes us ver y grateful and ver y optimistic about the future
We are shor t of the total funds we need to completely finish the building work, but have more than enough to move our food operation
transition between the old space and the new, as we cannot stop our daily food operation We feel so blessed that we can complete this phase of our plan and the future development will come later In closing, I know I say it a lot, but we are so so grateful for ever yone who buys into what we are doing and if you want to know more please ask us, it will be good to talk to you
Blessings and praise God always - Gordon

Welcome to our club update.
March was busy with mixed results for the First Team who won three, drew one and lost three of their league fixtures. The Reser ve Team won three, lost two and drew one of their three league fixtures and they triumphed in the Bed Senior Trophy Final winning 1-0 against old adversaries Caldecote in front of a 500 crowd at Bedford Town. Congratulations to them and we believe that we are one of the few clubs where the First team and Reser ve team have won the same trophy.
For the Women’s Team it was a hugely disappointing month losing on penalties to Ware in the League Cup semi-final and losing 2-1 to Luton Town Ladies in the Beds Junior Cup Final. In the league they drew one and lost one
The cur tain will fall on another league season at the end of April Thanks for all of your great suppor t

This month we have taken an extract from an ar ticle from the 1971 issue of the ‘Bedfordshire Magazine’ written by resident Madge Keeper who shares her childhood memories (Kindly loaned to us by Chris Webster )
“The first building in Brook Street where I lived was the shoe mender ’s house In his hut was an iron stove and from the overhead beams hung leather tools and shoelaces ” “For halfpenny the Cobbler would fill up a half-pint bottle with water and a flavoured pellet, turning the water into a sparkling ruby or topaz.” “These magic drinks went under the name of Monsters.”
“Down from our house lay a few more cottages, between us and the Pig & Whistle - The brook (which gave the street it’s name) lapped around the gardens which overlooked the meadows known locally as The Mixes.” “Through the village were the meadows where the brewer y stoodon brewing days a pungent smoke would issue from it’s tall chimney and the smell of boiling malt and hops would per vade that par t of the village ”
“The annual fair was held on The Green, known locally as the Stotfold Feast ” “The great steam engines hissed, gondolas, cakewalks and flying horses were aplenty and even when the last hard penny was spent there was plenty to watch and to see.”
Found in an ar ticle taken from the Citizen newspaper in 1965 - the tale of a five year old child princess bride named Anne Mowbray (note the Stotfold link) who was made to marr y Richard, Duke of York - one of the legendr y 'princes in the tower.'
It is thought that the children were married at such an incredibly young age to secure land ownership. The wedding took place at St Stephen's Chapel, Westminster with the celebrations lasting for four days. Anne was the daughter of ‘John de Moubray’ the last of the Dukes of Nor folk - (owners of Stotfold's Brayes Manor and four mills - a large estate wor th a substantial amount of money ) Richard Duke of York was the son of Edward IV and together with his brother V were said to have been killed in the tower at the request of Richard III Anne - a Stotfold child, sadly died at the age of nine, she is said to be buried in Westminster Abbey
Stotfold Population Figures in 1086. During the Doomsday Sur vey, the population of Stotfold was recorded as 200 In 1671 it has risen to 357, in 1801 it was 495 and by 1851 it was recorded as 1,395 The population increase was said to have been due to the building facilities in Stotfold in comparison to neighbouring villages. By 1950 the population had increased to 3,979.

VE Day celebrations were held in Stotfold with a large crowd gathering outisde the Regent’s Cinema (Arlesey Road) in 1945
We would love to feature an ar ticle on the past shops of Stotfold as we know that our more recent residents will be amazed at just how many shops used to trade along Regent Street, High Street and The Green to name but a few
Can you help? We are looking to compile a list- email us at stotfold news@yahoo co uk if you can help contribute!
