You may have noticed that Stotfold Town Council and a group of willing volunteers have transformed a previously unloved area on the High Street into an attractive, peaceful and productive little piece of land that is deser ving of the name of its location in The Haven
Here you will find some raised beds, newly replaced paving, alongside a much-improved resin bound sur face creating an attractive and accessible base for the garden which they encourage the use of by the whole of our community
Work began by planting three Espalier apple trees along the south facing wall These are specially trained and pruned to grow closely along the sur face, spreading out to give a beautiful
backdrop to the whole area. Beneath these, strawberries were added - easily accessible for little fingers to search and find juicy, red treasure. Raspberr y canes in the corner, rhubarb, berr y bushes and some herbs all help form the structure to the garden Throughout the year different plants wil be added, including salad veg and even pumpkins, giving a full growing season of produce available for anyone to enjoy In amongst all of this you will find flowers to give year-round colour and some early season nectar for bees too!
In the last 18 months the garden has really established itself and is looking fantastic Do drop by and help yourself to whatever is ready for picking Plants are labelled so you may find something you’ve not tried before
If you’d like to join in with caring for the garden, all volunteers are most gratefully welcomed! Please get in touch with Stotfold Town Council for more details.

Since that ver y first walk, the group has met ever y single Saturday at 8:30 AM rain or shine in Stotfold, opposite The Crown pub Each walk is more than just exercise; it's a chance to connect, to feel suppor ted, and to be heard.

In-between-in
We still seem to be in between seasons We’ve been swinging back and for th between the warmth of spring/summer before boomeranging back to the chill of Winter In recent weeks we’ve experienced several seasons in a day It may star t arctic in temperature before rising to something balmy, out of the wind, before returning to something requiring additional heat sources Subsequently I have found myself dressing in a mix of spring and winter clothing And as someone prone to frozen extremities, it’s still way too cold for my feet to go sockless But I’ve been caught out here and there when I’ve dressed for warmth only for the temperature to drop drastically during the day!
We can see in these lengthening days that new life is all around. Yet the bite in the air reminds us that the cold has not fully left the scene. Sometimes it can feel unsettling to be flitting in-between seasons. Yet we know it is a process that takes time because we have experienced it ever y year
of our lives And the chopping and changing between seasons reminds us that change is not a linear process When it comes to the changing seasons of our own lives, these can feel even more disconcer ting and unsettling While we will have lived through many endings, middles, beginnings and crossovers in between, we can still feel out of sor ts in changing times
As humans, we can find change and uncer tainty especially difficult to navigate Yet tr ying to keep things the same can also block changes that keep us learning and growing
During unsettling in-between-in times, it can help to refocus on what is cer tain and within our control. By maintaining good self-care and connection to suppor t systems, we can steady ourselves during times of transition.

Welcome to our update for June.
At Poppies we foster a love of nature, helping children connect with the natural world Our outdoor environments at both our sites provide a rich, stimulating environment where children learn to be curious, creative, become independent, learn how to keep safe, be happy and have fun with nature! We operate ‘free -flow’ where our outdoor spaces are open throughout the year and children can move freely between them. Our curriculum ensures that oppor tunity for ever y aspect of learning is present both indoors and outside.
This month, our children have explored nocturnal and diurnal animals with many of them remembering which animals are out in the day or night. We have suppor ted Hedgehog Awareness week and spent a ver y happy time exploring these cute characters. Children used dough, clay and wood spills to recreate them, some used woodwork and made beautiful models, while painting to create a spikey hedgehog body was great fun! Children also learned about hibernation through our discussions Hedgehog populations are declining in the UK so promoting hedgehog conser vation and awareness is impor tant More information on how we can suppor t hedgehogs can be found on britishhedgehogs org uk
Ideas families may like to tr y at home to suppor t children’s awareness include going on a ‘sounds’ walk and collect sounds such as birds singing, dogs barking, wind rustling leaves, running rivers Guessing what may be making the sound is a good listening skill and also par t of ‘mindfulness’ which suppor ts our emotional well-being Our breakfast and after school children have also been enjoying the outdoors, with nature activities and spor ts always popular!

Children enjoying the VE Day celebrations!
Thank you for your interest in our PreSchool. We look for ward to sharing more of our news with you again next month.
As we write our June update, we are currently well into Summer term at school Summer is the term that most of our trips and visits take place, all of which are excellent oppor tunities to not only enhance the curriculum but also give the children the chance to build on their own independent skills, confidence and resilience.
This month we have an update from our Head of Early Years, Miss Ashby:
In Reception, our topic this term is 'Once Upon a Time...' and we have been spending the term reading and finding out about lots of different books and stories. We have already read 'Jack and the Beanstalk', written a set of instructions and planted our own beans. We had to look after them and obser ve the changes as they grew We found out about the life cycle of a bean plant and got ver y excited when our beanstalks star ted to grow!
We also loved the stor y 'There's a Superhero in Your Book' and looking at old and new superheroes as well as writing about which superpower we would like to have
yone really enjoyed writing letters to our friends when we read 'The Jolly Postman' stor y We discussed different holidays and day trips we have been on with our friends and families and wrote about these memories in our letters We were excited to walk to the post box in small groups to post them and wait for the letters to be delivered
We then looked at 'Handa's Surprise' which is about a little girl who lives in a village in Kenya who wants to surprise her friends with delicious fruits We talked about the differences between the village Handa lived in and where we lived and linked this to some fruit- and vegetable -based ar twork, inspired by the ar tist Giuseppe Arcimboldo
Over the remainder of this term, we will be continuing to look at lots of different books and stories including 'The Ver y Hungr y Caterpillar' and learning about the butter fly life cycle, and 'The Gruffalo' and writing Gruffalo descriptions We will also be reading 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt', 'The Three Little Pigs' and 'If the Dinosaurs Came Back '
To end the year will also be having our ver y special Teddy Bears Picnic to celebrate the end of our first year at school, as we get ready for our exciting transition into Year 1.
The star t of the summer term with amazingly warm weather and longer evenings is a great time to be in schools
Perhaps I’m already becoming nostalgic as this is my last summer term in any school and whenever one is approaching a significant change it is natural to become reflective, maybe even sentimental For tunately, schools do not allow for too much introspection, there is far too much to do and this term is no different This year and this term have been no different We received our recruitment numbers into year five for September and this initiates a host of activity Having another full year group joining the school means that we will finally have a school with all year groups in place.
Over the course of May we under took our first set of GCSE mock examinations. As has been the case throughout their time at the school our oldest year group are once again the pathfinders and they have responded magnificently to the challenge of under taking “formal” examinations in our hall with external invigilators. Obviously, the biggest change for the school was the arrival of Mrs Linehan, our new Principal and Mrs Daplyn our new Vice Principal who joined us after Easter Their impact is already being felt around the school and I know they have been impressed with our pupils and the suppor t we receive from our community What is clear is that the core purpose of our school will remain the same: the day- to-day teaching and learning provided to young people to prepare them for their futures At PBA we often discuss pupils “life chances” This phrase encapsulates the essence and purpose of all schools: to improve young people’s life chances As educators we understand that a good education, in combination with good health and good oppor tunities will provide young people with the best chance to achieve their goals This mission is embraced by all at PBA and it will be exciting to see this develop over the next few years
Mr Adams
It is a privilege to introduce myself to the local Arlesey and Stotfold community as the new Principal of Pix Brook Academy I am passionate about the education of young people and dedicated to ensuring ever y pupil reaches their full potential
My career as a senior leader in secondar y education spans the last 15 years, during which I have worked across a number of schools, gaining a wide range of experience. I am excited and honoured to lead Pix Brook Academy into its next chapter and look for ward to working closely with all who make the Pix Brook community so great. Like you, I wish Mr Adams a well-deser ved retirement and look for ward to new stories about life outside of education.
Having joined Pix Brook after the Easter break, the Summer Term has provided a fantastic oppor tunity for me to get to know the pupils, and I have been impressed by their engagement and commitment to their learning I am par ticularly looking for ward to the upcoming schedule of trips and visits, which promise to enrich the pupils' learning experiences We also have the academy's renowned spor ts day, a highlight of the school calendar We will welcome our new Year 5s on site for their step- up day in early July, as well as the pupils’ families for the Welcome Evening This is always a truly hear t-warming moment
Looking ahead to September, we will have a full school and more responsibility than ever to suppor t and guide the young people of our local area I cannot wait to share and celebrate our pupils’ successes over the coming months and years

While we won’t be holding a ser vice at St. Guthlac’s that Sunday - as we meet just once a month - the Spirit that stirred hear ts two thousand years ago is still at work today; inspiring, guiding, and bringing peace that goes beyond understanding If you haven’t been to church in a while - or have never been and are simply curious - you’re warmly invited to come just as you are There’s always a place for you here We meet on the first Sunday of each month at 11:15am We’d love to welcome you
