“Losing my son shattered my world.” “I couldn't share my inner grief with anyone, even my family, so I star ted writing letters to my son over the past twenty years to keep his memor y alive for generations to come.” ”I wanted my book not only to help me but also to help other people going

through similar grief.” “The message behind the book being to tr y to live positively and to enjoy life with family and friends, just as I continue to do ”

The deeply personal insight into a mother ’s stor y of loss and love is aptly titled ‘Andrew my boy - where are you?’ You can find out more about Devi’s book by visiting https://www andrewmyboy co uk/ - the book is available to purchase from https://www amazon co uk/ANDREW-BOYWHERE-ARE-YOU/dp/B0FHHGNCGY

LOCAL life..

Alistair, we imagine the previous twelve months have been ver y busy for you - can you give our readers an over view on what you have been up to? Yes of course I hope this update finds all of your readers well It has been a little over a year now since you elected me to ser ve Stotfold and Fair field, giving me the oppor tunity of representing us all in Parliament as MP for our Hitchin constituency

It’s been a real privilege to represent a community so committed to improving our area From fantastic local events like Stotfest, brilliant groups like the Need Project and Salvation Army, and great engagement whenever I’m out on the doorstep, my work has always been better for our communities commitment to championing our area.

Can you give us some insight into your main focus for Stotfold? As our MP, I’ve been determined to improve local healthcare facilities. We all know the challenges faced by patients tr ying to access Larksfield GP surger y. Since before the general election, I’ve been working closely with the patients group and town council to push for action I’m glad to this lead to an increase of 50% in the number of GP appointments offered compared to last year, but there is clearly still more to do

Its clear fur ther improvements are needed to the triage and booking system, as well as overall capacity, and rest assured I’ll be continuing to push for these Alongside this I was glad to help secure over £11m in funding for repairs and upgrades at Lister and Beds hospitals, providing crucial improvements to help get them back on their feet

What other issues have been at the forefront of your work these last months? Too many young people and their families in Stotfold have been impacted by the twin challenges of the stalled 3 to 2 tier school transition and the failing state of special educational needs (SEND) provision I’ve been regularly challenging CBC to do better, convening local Cllrs and heads to push for our local cluster to be prioritised for completion

On SEND, I have been a vocal campaigner for reforms locally and in Parliament. Locally, we’ve suppor ted countless families take on CBC and pushed them to do better by local schools like Ivel Valley, and nationally I was glad to help secure £1bn of extra funding for SEND provision. There is lots more to do though to ensure our schools work for ever y young person who needs them.

As a town, we are experiencing quite a lot of expansionhow have you been working to ensure that this is carried out in the best interests of our local residents? I have been pushing for action on the challenges facing new build estates Far too many aren’t adopted by CBC, leaving new homeowners on the hook to private management companies that can charge sky high fees for little ser vice

I’ve been pushing for change in Parliament, to ensure estates are adopted and clamp down on rogue companies Alongside this we recently secured changes to regulation to ensure new builds come with solar panels as standard, saving new homeowners hundreds and reducing energy usage.

On top of these we’ve also been pushing on a whole host of local issues. From action to tackle potholes on Hitchin Road and the High Street to a greater local police presence to take on pockets of ASB.

As always, if there is any thing me and my team can do to suppor t you, we are always here to help Don’t hesitate to get in contact: alistair strathern mp@parliament uk

Menopause

ers with Jo Loach

Menopause Matters

Following a recent conversation with someone star ting on HRT, I felt compelled to write this While menopause has never been so broadly discussed in the media before, there are still many my ths and misunderstandings surrounding it For exper t information and advice, tr y Dr Louise Newson for her Balance FB page offering information and an App to track cycles and symptoms For readers, I recommend, ‘Older and wider ’ , by Jenny Éclair (hilarious) and, ‘What is wrong with me?’, by Lorraine Candy (encouraging) For those preferring TV or podcasts, all things Davina McCall

Menopause is when a woman has had no period for over twelve months Perimenopause is the time preceding this when your periods may change by becoming lighter /shor ter/heavier/different. Our system may then star t to malfunction in multiple ways as hormones are connected to most par ts of the bodily system, stretching way beyond hot flushes.

What I wish I had known before entering perimenopause is, 1) it existed, 2) that it can star t in the 40’s (earlier for some), 3) that GP’s are not always trained on Menopause, 4) to trust ourselves as we are the exper t on our own body

BAL & CO. MOTOR CARE

and to persevere until finding a knowledgeable GP or Menopause Nurse who listens, understands and helps you navigate it. Perimenopause is like a top to toe refurbishment that changes the body from being able to house a growing baby, to not. Some lucky women have no symptoms (tr ying not to be envious), some have a few and some of us have tons! The symptoms that may be experienced range from; anxiety/depression (tr y oestrogen before anti-depressants), fatigue, sleeplessness, brain fog, difficulty making decisions (even what to wear/eat), forgetting words/trains of thought, walking into things (regular bruising), losing things (especially the plot), rage ( Tourette’s style swearing), tear fulness, nausea, joint pain and many more. As a Christian, I’ve found myself having a few choice conversations with the Almighty about how he didn’t come down here in a female body!

These symptoms can be hugely debilitating which does NOT mean we are weak, failing or ‘should’ be ok Ever y woman’s body is different in experience, as well as in what helps or hinders it Fur thermore, the latest research shows that histor y plays a role as symptoms may be exacerbated by childhood trauma (Adverse Childhood Experience ACE), long covid (proven to impact ovaries, thus hormones), stress and neurodivergence When any/all of these are present, the risk of burnout also increases

However, don’t despair, if you want to know you are not going mad, or alone, there is an extremely friendly Menopause group who meet bimonthly in Ruth’s Café, Stotfold. Vicky Sharpe, who runs a Physiotherapy clinic, Physio Health Hub, hosts The Menopause Café as a welcoming space to chat, share experiences and suppor t one another through the menopause journey. The café opens at 7.30pm with a speaker on a specialist subject star ting at 8pm before closing at 9pm. The next meeting is Wednesday 24th September with a menopause coach, speaking. Anyone is welcome to come along.

Menopause, a hot topic in more ways than one!

Update From The Need Project

As usual I star t with another busy month for us But, honestly these days are so busy and July was no exception, even though we usually have less referrals due to school holidays and the vouchers which are given out by agencies.

We continue to be amazed at how our food suppor t and financial suppor t just keeps coming in, just when we need it.

God is so good to us We can do nothing without our suppor ters, who really buy into what we are tr ying to do locally for our neighbours, so thank you

The Chapel is progressing well with phase 1 of our plans, but we have set back our moving date, due to the additional work we are tacking on, which is par t of phase 2. This will mean, there will be no disruption, when phase 2 eventually star ts, on our main focus, which is our food ministr y (phase 1). We hope to have an open day nearer the time of our move, so we can show people how our food ministr y works We should also be able to share about the plans for phase 2 with some illustrations

I have made the decision to retire from my position as the project leader It was always planned, as I know that God called me and blessed me with the position for a time, but now it is time for someone else to take over, someone who God has called to take on the next steps of this amazing work (I honestly know I’m not that person and I’m at peace with it )

I will be involved with the chapel development, but the ever yday work of the food ministr y will be down to someone else and not me

So, in closing, please pray for the project, for me, for the chapel work and the new project director.

We need so much as a project, food, finance, direction and more. Wisdom too, but without God and prayer we are dead in the water.

Finally, I want to thank ever y person involved with the project, you are priceless and I thank God for you

Praise God always

Gordon

Did you know that Stotfold is famous for taking par t in the Swing Riots in 1830? In the 19th centur y, some viewed Stotfold as a wealthy place We have mentioned before the old saying "to live in Stotfold, one has to have £100 and a pig" but it was widely accepted that most people living here were poor In 1830, like many agricultural communities across southern England, people decided to fight for better conditions. The ‘Swing Riots’ reached Stotfold on 1st December. 300 labourers gathered, demanding pay of two shillings a day. When this was refused, some took out their frustration by setting light to some

straw In total, ten men were arrested and brought before the cour t in Bedford One of them was 37 year old Harr y Gentle At first, Gentle and four of his fellow prisoners were sentenced to death – (the standard punishment for attacks on proper ty back then ) This was then changed to 14 years transpor tation to Australia as they needed farmers After spending 18 months in a floating prison in Woolwich, Gentle found himself bound for Sydney on a one way ticket,

leaving behind his wife and five children. Another prisoner from Stotfold, William Saunderson was also on board. Both men were assigned to farms in Maitland. Records show that Henr y Gentle died in West Maitland in 1864 aged 69 It is said that William Saunderson came back to Stotfold 44 years later but that he did not stay long

Change is natural if not always smooth as we move from one phase of life to another The month of September brings us a change of seasons: The warmth of summer gives way to mornings with a touch of chill in the air; the evenings come earlier as the days shor ten in the rhy thm of the season Change means letting go and accepting what will come: we must allow the comfor table to be replaced by new urgencies Without the season of fall, summer's growth would never become the har vest; it is now time for seeds to begin the process for the next life cycle

Our children are returning to school, university, college or are just star ting for the first time This can sometimes be an anxious time for children/students/ parents/grandparents and carers alike as we enter a new season of growth challenges and new beginnings Philippians 4:6-7 says “Do not be anxious about any thing, but in ever y situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hear ts and your minds in Christ Jesus”. We’re not promised an easy season, but we hold onto faith that He is walking right alongside us, a father to us all, holding our hand and guiding us to the light. Our next ser vice is on Sunday 6th September at 11:15am, followed by refreshments. All are welcome. The church will also be open all day on Saturday 13th September as we are on the “pitstop” route for the annual Bike n Hike fundraising event. Please feel free to pop in and explore its histor y and architecture, experience the presence of God, say a prayer or just enjoy the peace.
