Well, here we are arriving feet first into September as the summer draws to a close If you are a parent who has juggled the last six weeks, we’d like to wish you a restful month ahead and wish all of the children star ting new schools, (or maybe just new classes) the ver y best of luck for the star t of the Autumn term!

We have a special feature written for us this month by Janet Fielder from Respite at Home - You may have heard of this charity quite a lot this year, we thought it would be great if we all found out a little more about this year ’s Stotfold Mayor ’s chosen charity Thanks Janet for telling us all about your experience volunteering for this incredible local cause
Finally we wish to bid farewell to one of our deliver y couples Paul & Jeanette Edwards as they head off towards the coast for pastures new. As a farewell gift from us, we have chosen one of Paul’s many wonder ful photo’s as our front cover for September - thank you both for all of your help over the last few years and the ver y best of luck in your new home! Until next time!

Readers of last month’s magazine will recall the incredible stor y of Stotfold youngsters Lola (6) and Immie (3) and their challenge to climb Snowden to raise funds for the Garden House Hospice
We are thrilled to repor t that the climb was successful with Mum Harriet telling the Stotfold News Magazine; “We star ted the climb at around 8am, star ting strong, stopping ever y 1km, handing out snacks and Barbie plasters as briber y!” “Once we got to the half way point, we had a good sit down and a rest, however it got ver y scrambly with Immie who is under 1 meter tall, climbing up a lot of it on her hands and knees as her legs were just not big enough.”
“As the girls climbed the last step to the summit there was a round of applause and cheers from fellow climbers, it was really really lovely.” The girls raised a fantastic £650 for the charity - We think they are amazing!

You most cer tainly would have heard of ‘Respite at Home’ quite a bit this year, especially if you attended STOTFEST Respite at Home are the official Mayor ’s charity for 2024 and so far, have benefitted from several local events and fundraisers We caught up with Stotfold volunteer Janet Fielder as she told us more about the charity and the reason she chose to become a volunteer
Ten years ago I saw an adver t in the Stotfold News Magazine for Respite at Home Volunteers Mid Beds & Ivel Valley, and I haven’t looked back since! Volunteers visit, befriend and give suppor t and advice to people in our community who are coping with terminal and life limiting illnesses such as Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone, Cancers, Parkinsons, debilitating strokes and COPD. - We give their carers a well earned break. I currently visit two families each week in this area. Sometimes I visit for a couple of hours, and other times longer. We sit in and chat, play games, or I read to them. Other times I hone my wheelchair skills, and we peruse the streets for fresh air, coffee and cake, or a visit to a local pub.
After diagnosis, treatment and care plans are put in place, patients and their families can often become isolated in their homes and from their communities Par t of what we do involves fundraising We are so thankful to Stotfold residents for their suppor t at One Stop, The Steam Fair, Walking Market, Stotfold Christian Choir and Stotfest Also, our Mayor for choosing our charity to benefit recently from Stotfest was a real boost and recognition of what we do
We are always looking for more volunteers in the Stotfold and Arlesey area If interested in joining us, email respiteathomevolunteers@aol co uk or call 07483 376077 and leave a message We would love to hear from you
Dear Editor,
Please can I encourage all Stotfold residents to respond to the ‘Local Plan’ consultation currently being run by Central Bedfordshire Council?
The Local Plan sets out a vision and framework for the future development of the area
We need enough homes and jobs for ever yone, and to plan carefully for these to make sure they are built in the right place, with the necessar y facilities and ser vices, while protecting the environment as much as possible
Without a Plan, the development will still happen, but we’ll have much less control over where it happens and how it happens. It is time for the plan to be updated and your input is required
More details and the chance to respond are online at https://www centralbedfordshire gov uk/newlocalplan, or paper copies will be available at the librar y on request.
This ten-week consultation is open until 26th September. Please respond with your thoughts and views so they can be incorporated into the new Local Plan for our future
Yours,
Cllr Kat Woodfine PhD
Ward Councillor – Stotfold

Dear Editor,
After seeing their adver t in the June edition of Stotfold News I booked on Orange Henn’s day trip to the Isle of Wight on the 13th July I have to say that I’d recommend this company to anyone interested in their wide range of trips I travelled with my brother and we were picked up outside Ruth’s Coffee Shop in the High Street exactly on time. We met up with the rest of the group, including Richard Henn the organiser, at the Dutch Nurser y in Hatfield and made our way to the Isle of Wight for a lovely day out Richard and the driver, Mar tin, were ver y friendly and helpful and I’d encourage your readers to take advantage of the Stotfold pick ups, which I don’t think any other coach companies offer and which do away with worr ying about public transpor t or finding somewhere to park
Kind regards, Mick Barnett

Dear Editor,
I thought that you might like to see our rather tall sunflower (must be around the 10ft mark!)
We wondered if there were any taller in Stotfold this year?
Sandra Bailey Editor ’s Note: Get in touch with us if you have a large sunflower this year!!
Each month we like to introduce you to another of our wonder ful Stotfold & Arlesey News Magazine adver tisers - this month we are talking to Michelle Moss from Bandit’s Pet Shop.
Michelle, many of our readers will have seen lots about Bandit's Shop on facebook as we know you are a regular on there promoting all things Bandit! For those that are unaware of what it is you do, can you give us a brief outline of what Bandit's shop is all about?
In the beginning …..When I stopped Secondar y teaching after 19 years and I star ted my dog walking business I also decided to star t a small shop sideline to suppor t the walking. I decided against home made treats and so decided to get various wholesalers lined up star t some Facebook selling and I expanded slowly. During Covid, my doorstep deliver y ser vice and weekly special offers meant my shop exploded with a massive bang - demand was suddenly huge. I now actually have a shop room - viewing is by appointment due to my dog walking - and I now am a natural dog treat specialist with doorstep deliver y available on a Friday
We can't have you take par t in this feature without us asking the question! Who actually is Bandit!?
Bandit is my 28th foster dog who I knew was always going to be my keeper! I wanted a collie and he was the first full collie I fostered - he is a Heathlands Animal Rescue from Ireland Bandit comes on 2 hours a day of my walks and has trained most of the puppies that I walk for recall He is also the chief taste tester for products in my shop, a role he takes ver y seriously!
We know that as well as the shop, there is another side to the business which is equally as impor tant to you - Can you tell us a bit more about this?
Fundraising and helping animal charities means a lot to me As my dog walking and shop got busier I was not in a position to foster as much as I wanted So I thought of a way I could combine my shop to help fundraise The solution came to me one day on a dog walk - I would make the 1000 club This was my shop doing a monthly raffle and raising £1000 for a charity and then my shop customers voting in the next charity to raise £1000 for Over time we have evolved the Charity choices to being registered and within 30 miles of Arlesey as I have a stronger desire to suppor t smaller local charities as they really do need the most help We are currently in the process of completing the £1000 for Luna Animal Rescue and the next Charity is in a nomination process. Each ticket is £2 and £1 goes direct to the charity and £1 covers the cost of products - I do not take any thing from the raffle proceeds at all and tr y and promote the fundraising as the more tickets sold the more raffle prizes which in turn means more funds raised for the charities.
You obviously have a love for Animals Michelle, are you surrounded by lots of animals at home?
Not as many as I would like!! I have grown up having dogs - Guinea pigs , rabbits and cats . So when my children were small we also star ted with fishthen guinea pigs and then hamsters and gerbils - we now have a bearded dragon and a leopard gecko
I just have one dog Bandit - but as I’m a licensed boarder I also board and have day care for the dogs that I walk So I get lots of cuddles Bandit is my second rescue dog my first one Jessie came from the Kimpton Blue Cross she died at17 years old - it took me a while to choose my next forever dogso I fostered first until Bandit ( my 28th foster dog ) came along
Bandit’s Shop can be found at www banditspetshop co uk - you can also follow them on Facebook where details of the 1000 club can also be found
Great news – we’ve made it through the summer, the temperatures are a bit more civilised and the road to the Mill is open again! We’d just like to say how grateful we are to all our summer visitors who have braved the road closure and diversion to get to us We really do appreciate you coming!
For anyone who has visited the Mill early in Spring or later in the Autumn, you’ll know it’s on the chilly side I reckon the Victorian millers working there would have been pretty cold and miserable – if they had the time to sit down and think about it! But this year we’ve seen some toasty temperatures in the Mill, with our loft area reaching a baking 39 degrees. Phew! This has had some interesting effects on the Mill machiner y, with the milling team adjusting belts and wheels to keep ever y thing turning. Hopefully we can now enjoy some lovely Autumnal weather with sunshine, blue skies and cooler temperatures.
In fact, if you’re out and about this September, come and find us at the Bedfordshire Steam & Countr y Fayre (13th – 15th September) at Shuttlewor th. We’ll have a stall there and we’d love to chat with you about the Mill, sell you some flour and maybe sign you up as a volunteer! Speaking of Countr y Shows, it doesn’t feel all that long ago that we were writing about the Steam Fair in May, and now here we are just a few shor t weeks from the Working Steam Weekend – this year on the 5th and 6th October.
If you haven’t experienced the WSW before, you’re in for a treat! This ver y special and unique event, which has been going since 2004, gives you the chance to get up close and personal with some of the giants of the steam world, from the enormous steam-powered timber saw to the many-armed threshing machine You can also watch the heavy horses ploughing the far end of the showground alongside vintage tractors, enjoy the Sheep Show (will Sam the Suffolk woo the ladies again with his dancing??), visit the many static steam engines on display, check out the craft and trade stalls and pick up some early Christmas presents or relax with a pint in the beer tent and – of course – the Mill will be open with milling demonstrations and the Tea Room and Kingfisher Shop will be both be open Tickets are available online now, and if you book before 3rd October you can get a discount on the full price Take a look at our website for more details: https://www stotfoldmill com/working - steam-2024/ We hope to see you there!
Monday - Friday 10am - 4pm Wednesdays 1pm - 4pm

Anyone with children probably has their lives governed by the rhy thm of the academic year Ditto anyone like me who has spent years in working in schools or attending multiple years of university as a ‘mature’ student! And so September has a new- season feel to it As I type this in the scorching heat of early August, I have no idea where the seasons will be in terms of our weather come September And I do not know where anyone is in terms of personal seasons; ending, beginning or transition; we’re all somewhere amidst that But, ever y ending offers a new beginning, some of which are more welcome than others, depending on our personal seasons and preferences. Even the star t of school signals the end of the summer holidays. This may bring var ying responses from students, staff and parents alike!
What I do know about new seasons is that they shift the daily rhy thm of life, inviting us to immerse ourselves within a new flow. Any new season involves at least one thing stopping/reducing for another to begin/increase. It offers the oppor tunity for a new flow that may work better for us than the old one. It invites us to review what previously went well, alongside what didn’t. In taking the time to identify these, we can make active choices for change where this is possible. This may involve reducing some of our daily activities and commitments as well as increasing others. This can star t with an over view of how we are spending our time and energy along with what is immovable and what is not. Time is always precious. Time spent reviewing how we spend this can be time well spent indeed!
A new season offers the chance to begin again, differently

•769 parcels provided in 23 working days • 401 top- up-bags collected from our Pop- up sites • £53,995 estimated value of the food for the month • £6,602.50, the average monthly cost to run the charity • 1680 adults, 1526 children & 274 pensioners - the amount of people helped in July.
Time goes so fast in between these repor ts, and it never ceases to amaze me how much work we get through and how we manage in all aspects of our operation. We know that God has his hand on us because it is His project, and we follow his teaching in how we operate, in that we make no distinction with our food as long as you are in need and have been referred by a known agency to us, then we will do our best for you. These agencies know their clients and are professionals and know when food and suppor t is needed better than we do.
Some aspects are more challenging for example dietar y needs etc. Our clients and our demographics mean that variation in need has changed massively as we ser ve different people, but we manage praise God!
This month (July) we distributed 769 food parcels along with 401 bags of best before items, which would have gone into landfill if you had not helped by taking it I’ll never take for granted your ongoing suppor t either by funds, food, prayers, which are so so impor tant to us and even a hello and a smile makes such a difference
Now to our move, well I can say we are miles closer than last month, but for me not close enough, but by the next repor t maybe, just maybe we will be over the line, God willing
We have had our first Christmas planning meeting, just to get our heads around how we can manage with ever y thing else that is going on
Anyway, we are excited and ner vous, all at the same time, for the future and hopefully by the next repor t we may have a set of keys in our hands
In closing, thank you so much for your incredible suppor t as always and please if we are open, smile and maybe say hello
It’s good to talk.
Thanks Gordon
Praise God always

A huge welcome back to our wonder ful Roecroft friends and family.
August is always a busy month in schools, as it gives us time to do all of the things that aren’t possible when the children are busy working; things such as carpet cleaning, decorating and this summer the installation of two new outdoor stage areas for all of the children to enjoy These would have come at great cost to the school, if it wasn’t for the ver y kind donations from not only our Parent Association ‘FORLS’ but also contributions from local grants and companies - I would like to say an enormous thank you on behalf of all of the staff and children, this new outdoor resource will be put to great use.
Ever y year I encourage not only our families but also our extended Roecroft family to explore our school website and to learn more about the school, you will find exciting information about our curriculum, our school ethos, culture and much more.

I look for ward to sharing our school news with you over the coming academic year and hopefully will meet many of you at our open evening which is set for Wednesday 6th November Warm wishes, Mrs Cross www roecroftlower co uk
As I reflect on the last year at PBA I am once again reminded of the distance the school has travelled in such a shor t period of time Next year we will have six year groups in the school, over 100 members of staff and a building that is no longer half empty: 900 plus pupils with nearly 200 in the new year 5 will make the place feel pretty busy Of course, each new year brings it own set of challenges, and that will continue to be the case while we are still growing Looking back a few key moments warrant mention:
Without doubt the OFSTED experience was a key moment. It feels like we were waiting quite some time to finally have our visit and when it did arrive it all went by in a blur. For tunately, things went ver y well and the school looked and felt as it always does, calm, business like and happy. Pupils enjoyed talking to inspectors about their school, staff had the oppor tunity to talk about the journey the school has been on over the last few years and overall, in as far as is possible, ever yone had a good experience. The outcome from the inspection was ver y strong with some areas identified as outstanding. This was gratifying given all the work under taken in the last few years and ever yone deser ves credit for their effor ts
The per formance of our current year 6 pupils in their SATs examinations was also a highlight of the year Our pupils quite simply per formed magnificently and deser ve huge credit for their attitude and application throughout the examinations and in the build- up As a school we are determined that examinations of this nature are given their due status but are not over exaggerated I did not expect to surpass our achievements of the year before but to do so and once again exceed the national average in all areas was a great achievement
As has been the case for the last few years Spor ts day will once again live long in the memor y This year Mr Szwajbak and his team put on yet another masterclass in organisation and engagement All pupils in all years were involved and the races and events were held in such good spirits
Another truly magnificent event was the school’s inaugural per forming ar ts festival. Organised by our head of drama Mrs Jones this event pulled together ar t, drama, dance and music in an exciting smorgasbord of per formances. Moving back into the year there are other highlights but perhaps amongst all of the events and visits, the Ski trip stands out. To take our first trip abroad was impor tant, to do so with a group of pupils under taking their first trip to the mountains was simply brilliant. Pupils had an amazing time, staff, including our parent volunteer worked relentlessly and the net result was a fantastic experience all round. If it hadn’t been for some old fool breaking their leg it would have passed without mishap. ( The swelling has nearly gone!)
It has been another incredible year September provides another great oppor tunity for a host of new staff to join the school and look to make their mark

In this feature we are calling on our local exper ts to offer our readers some helpful advice - this month we look at navigating divorce: Thank you to Kathy Scoot from HR J Foreman Laws for being this month’s exper t.
Kathy, what happens during the divorce process? Facing a divorce is an emotionally challenging time, especially when it comes to discussing the division of matrimonial assets and child arrangements So, what is the criteria for a divorce?
To legally divorce the criteria states that:• You have been married for over a year • Your marriage has irretrievably broken down• The cour ts of England and Wales have jurisdiction - Since April 6, 2022, the 'no-fault divorce' process sought to make the process less confrontational. This means that you no longer need to assign blame for the marriage breakdown. How are divorce proceedings initiated?
The first step is to decide if you want to make a joint application with your spouse or a sole application. If you applied jointly you need to wait 20 weeks from the date your divorce application was acknowledged, then you can apply for a Conditional Order. If you applied as a sole applicant, the cour t would send your spouse the divorce application and the Acknowledgement of Ser vice Form. They should respond to it within 14 days and state if they agree or dispute the divorce. If they agree, you will then wait 20 weeks from the date of your divorce application. After this time you can apply for a Conditional Order.
How will the finances be divided? There is no set formula. Each case is assessed on its own individual merits to reach a settlement that is fair to both par ties
How long does the divorce process take? The timeline varies based on individual circumstances Generally, the process takes a minimum of 20 weeks from the application for a Conditional Order, followed by an additional 6 weeks and 1 day to obtain the Final Order This period may extend if complexities arise To make an appointment

Our life is dependant on that which feeds us. Those things can be obviously food to begin with. But other things play a par t too. We are dependant on cer tain people for cer tain reasons eg. Love, security, friendship and all life suppor t systems. Jesus tells us that many of the things we depend on are temporar y. They come and go. They change over time and may leave us lonely or feeling neglected. But He gives us “The food that endures for eternal life”. Jesus said “I Am the bread of life” We know that bread is the staple food Our shopping list always contain it in some form or other It is a catastrophe when we run out of it at home or in the shops
So when Jesus says He is that staple food, we can feel safe in the knowledge that He will always be available
Jesus said ”I Am the bread of life Whoever comes to me will never be hungr y and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty” All that we need is found in Him
In the simplest of terms, He knows your suffering and struggles He can’t take them away, but he does promise if you call on Him, he will carr y you through it Test him, he says Oh and by the way It didn’t rain at our August outdoor ser vice! Blessings
Revd Jane Wheatley.
