The Privilege O f Ser vice - Puts
Stotfold on The Map.
Bob Street spent the first 20 years of his life in Stotfold until, after marr ying Janet Adams in the Salvation Army hall in Church Road in 1967, they headed for the Salvation Army's college in London and a lifetime of ser vice as officers, an adventure that took them to around 50 countries in many different roles.

Now, having returned to their roots and their various family members, Bob has written a book of 365 daily readings based on his wide variety of life experiences. Many of them involve Stotfold, such as schooldays, school friends, his football days, those who influenced him and present day occurrences, with many Stotfold photos featuring throughout. The book has been released internationally and includes his meetings with Eric Morecambe, Bobby Ball, Wendy Craig, President Rober t Mugabe and other personalities and politicians It gives insights into his encounters with other cultures, including his opening of the Salvation Army's first premises in Mongolia and Greenland Amazon describes Bob as 'superb at producing beautifully easy reading' while combining it with profound thinking' (Bob was editor and editor-in-chief of the Army's newspapers in the 1980s) He also became principal of the college to which he and Janet went to be trained in 1967 The Privilege of Ser vice has 416 pages and is available in paperback, Kindle and Kobo

Are You Turning 50 This Year?

A new group formed on Facebook back in Januar y has proven to be hugely successful, with many people joining up and reconnecting with school friends from many years ago! The group, named ‘The 1975 Reunion’ has over 50 members already and grows daily, with people sharing school memories and photographs of years gone by
Organisers Paula Walker and Samantha Bloomfield are looking for 1974/1975 babies who are turning 50 this academic year and who attended St Mar y’s in Stotfold, Roecroft Lower School and Gothic Mede Lower between 1980 and 1984 and then went on to Etonbur y or Fearnhill Schools
The ladies are planning some reunion events to go with the group, the first reunion is already planned for the 24th May in Letchwor th with another planned for 17th August Samantha told the Stotfold News Magazine “ We really cannot believe how quickly the group has grown!” “We don’t know how many will attend the events we have planned, but it’s just lovely even seeing people chatting away and catching up!”
If you are interested in joining the group and re -connecting with friends and old classmates, then you can find them on facebook by searching ‘The 1975 Reunion’

LOCAL life..
Paul, Williams Proper ty Maintenance has fast become a household name since you have star ted adver tising with us some 2 years ago..Can you tell us a little bit about how you came to star t the business in Stotfold Paul?
I moved to Stotfold in December 2022 after living and working in London all my life. I had been working for my brother Dennis for 27 years up until then, in the building trade, and moved to Stotfold to live with my then fiancé (now wife) Sue. I had been trained as a Master Tiler (like my father and grandfather before me) and worked for my brother ’s firm doing ever y aspect of building and interior decoration work, including plastering, woodwork & masonr y repairs, painting & decorating and garden maintenance, so decided to set up my own firm, Williams Proper ty Maintenance, to bring my exper tise to the people of Stotfold & Arlesey! I have some great customers who repeatedly ask me to do more work, as they appreciate quality work at a fair price, and I am delighted to say that the business is keeping me ver y busy and out of trouble!
Paul, we're eager to find out what you par ticularly like about living in Stotfold now that you have settled here with your wife Sue?
Stotfold has ver y quickly become my home, we have lovely neighbours and have made some good friends here and love walking our rescue dog Lyra in the fields and open areas around the village Sue moved to Stotfold 18 years ago and has always been a keen suppor ter of local events and businesses, and together we regularly attend local community events like the Steam Fair, and Christmas lights etc Personally, I am a keen fisherman and par ticularly love going fishing with my sons to Henlow Lakes!
Seems as we are writing this in Januar y, we couldn't not ask you the obvious question.. - What New Year resolutions will you have made this year and how good are you at keeping them? My main resolution this year is a continuing one from last year – to give up smoking! So far so good! I also resolve to take care of my lovely wife, who is always there for me, and to suppor t her as she does me, always putting me first. I also wish to give something back to my fantastic customers by offering 10% off all quotes until the end of March 2025.
Sticking with the New Year theme Paul - You have one piece of music which you have to choose to play for the whole of 2025. What song or piece of music would you choose and why?
Being the romantic old fool that I am, and a huge Elvis Presley fan, I can only suggest the song played as our first dance at our wedding in May 2024 “I Can’t Help Falling In Love with You!”
Finally, I would like to thank all my customers, past, present and future, for helping to make my life in Stotfold as good as it is, and the Stotfold News for all of their suppor t
I would also like to wish ever yone a ver y happy & healthy year ahead and look for ward to a bright future in this lovely town
We love to learn m ore about our wond erful m agazine advertisers!
If you have a local business and would like to par ticipate in a future LOCAL LIFE feature then get in touch!

Update from TEASEL.
Our Winter clear- up work continues, with our final work par ty of 2024 tackling some of the dead and tangled growth in JohnStan wood. This is the small copse in the corner of the first meadow of the Nature Reser ve, adjacent to the road. There is always more that could be done, but our hardy volunteers did an excellent job in the chilly conditions – and were rewarded with a mince pie and “something warming” to drink at the end of the session!

We were back again at the star t of the New Year – this time working over at Centenar y Wood, another small copse off Malthouse Lane, just beyond the hump back bridge Teas

Planted in honour of another royal anniversar y, Teasel helps to maintain this on behalf of Stotfold Town Council The main focus of our work par ty was to pollard the two willows near the riverside seat Regularly cutting all the branches right back to the main trunk ensures the tree doesn’t get too big, and they soon shoot out again We have stacked the cut branches, and hope to use them to fill some of the gaps in the boundar y hedge
BAL & CO. MOTOR CARE
Quality used cars & vans supplied. Excellent after sales care, our warrantees cover both parts & labour
Motor vehicle servicing and general repair work undertaken, any make or model

Our brave volunteers also did battle with a large patch of bramble next to the Willows, and the combined work has really opened up the grass area beside the river, with views over the water, and much more light coming in. Hopefully we can maintain and continue to improve the area to make an attractive spot for visitors to relax and reflect.
We hope you will have a chance to visit the wood, as it has a great profusion of spring flowers – snowdrops, aconites, and later bluebells (parking available at the Riverside Rec). The Winter Aconite has a yellow flower similar to a buttercup It is usually out from late Januar y to early March – but a few were spotted on our early Jan work par ty - Teasel

Your LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor,
We wanted to share with you some snapshots of the family of black squirrels that live in the trees along the High Street. They have been here about 7 years and have black offspring each year! The annual burial of storage nuts often happens in our lawn!
Regards, Steve Gibbs

Dear Editor,
I wanted to write in to thank one of your adver tisers, Jonny Garside, who came out to look at my front door lock as it seemed to be getting stuck when locking. A quick use of his magic spray and hey presto as good as new! What a great ser vice! Thanks Jonny!
Davina Mason
Dear Editor,
Re: Christmas Switch On 2024 What a great event!
A big thank you to our Mayor, Councillor Steve Buck and all involved in arranging ever y thing, the Christmas tree, lights around the lamp posts, photo frames and decorations, all brilliant!

Mental Health Matters - with Jo Loach
Community
An impor tant par t of mental health is maintained through connection to community. We are social animals created to be in relationship with others. The need for social interaction varies largely from one human to another. It is influenced by how introver t/extrover t we are. Introver ts are not incapable of socialising, but usually need to recharge in solitude, where the extrover t typically recharin company.
Whatever our preference or capacity for company, we all need to belong to a community Mental health can be suppor ted by belonging to a community where we connect over shared interests/beliefs/challenges or gifts In this we are reminded of the world beyond our own, lest we become too lost in our own minds!
In fifteen years of listening to others, I’ve obser ved that the only thing worse than going through trials, is to feel alone in them When we are par t of a community, we enjoy another layer of protection from isolation and extreme loneliness I’ve read in several places that loneliness can be as harmful to health as smoking Shocking huh?

We need each other to continue living rather than merely existing We need to belong to a community that accepts us for who we are and notices and cares when we are not ok A regular weekly meeting can provide a structure and stability that suppor ts our mental health This could be a church or other place of worship, an exercise, interest, neighbourhood or reading group or any other kind of community that meets regularly with a shared focus
For any local men it could be the Walk and Talk men’s group operating locally as seen in the Januar y Stotfold News
Connecting to a community can enhance and suppor t mental health so if you’re not connected, go and explore the options!

Update from The Need Project
880 parcels provided in 14 working days • 300 top- up-bags collected from our Pop- up sites • £86,600 estimated value of the food for the month • £6,602 50, the average monthly cost to run the charity • Helping 1771 adults, 1691 children & 296 pensioners in December.
December repor t:
Well that was different for a December We had to change the whole operation of how and where we work from and how long we work for, just to get out the parcels which were required from us We managed, but without your incredible generosity we wouldn’t have been able to do any of it, so thank you all so so much
Ever y parcel that was referred to us and a few extra, we managed to deliver before Christmas Day Some 880 in total along with at least £20,000 wor th of brand new toys, making a massive difference to the children plus 300 top up bags that would normally go in landfill
The volunteers that we have worked tirelessly, as usual and all went the extra mile So again and I really mean it, thank you all so much, you are an amazing group of people
What’s the new year got in store for us I have no idea Food parcel refferals keep rising month on month higher than last year and that doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down Best before is always busy and doesn’t slow down either
On our move, which seems to be a bit like a saga to me, it is getting closer, but for me too slow, but we have to trust in Gods timing and not mine (easier to say than do), but we know he is in control.
As you read this repor t, we will have had our rest and will be back working, tr ying to keep up, so please continue to keep suppor ting us in all the ways you can please and most of all please pray for us as we tr y to do what God tells us to do about our neighbours.

Thank you and praise God always
Gordon

This month we have an update from our KS2 team, this is our children that are in Year 3 and Year 4:
Year 3 returned to school in Januar y after the Christmas break full of enthusiasm and looking for ward to the Spring term We star ted the term by reading some classic my ths and legends and focused on a traditional tale called ‘The Tiger Child’ The children enjoyed writing their own versions of the stor y
We have continued developing our knowledge of French and in Ar t, our topic has been based on the work of ar tist Georgia O’Keeffe We studied how she used shape, tone and shading in her drawings and the children star ted using these skills in their own sketches

In Geography we have star ted studying land use We had fun exploring Ordnance Sur vey maps of both urban and rural areas of the UK and learned some of the symbols and how to use a key when working with maps
Year 4 have star ted the new year off with lots of enthusiasm and have been enjoying exploring the impact of the Romans coming to Britain in their Histor y lessons. They have discovered how they helped to develop a road network which some of our modern roads still follow, and brought building methods, food and hygiene developments to us too.
In DT, we've star ted looking at mechanisms and are going to be creating moving cars and in English, we have been looking at poetr y and have had the oppor tunity to read, discuss and per form a range of poems We especially loved ‘Chocolate Cake’ by Michael Rosen and ‘Walking my Iguana’ by Brian Moses

News from Pix Brook A cademy

Februar y already I can see that this year is going to be no different from the previous in that we are once again managing a significant growth in pupils and staff Obviously, the biggest change in the school is the appointment of a new Principal Charlotte Linehan will be joining the school at Easter and this will have a significant effect on the leadership of the school As the outgoing Principal it will be both interesting and challenging to leave the school in the hands of another, although I know the school is in a fantastic place to consider its next phase of development
During the last few months, we have successfully recruited new staff to extend our upper school provision This continued growth means that fur ther appointments are being made all the time Already we have appointed additional English, Science and a new Vice Principal As a school that was always designed to be a secondar y school, albeit with an extension to include year 5 and 6, we have been for tunate to be able to plan for the key stage four curriculum we want to deliver and fur ther appointments both in terms of teachers and suppor t staff will be made over the next few months.
While this long - term work continues, we are also determined to develop our pupil experience. Young voices will have per formed at the 02 and we have launched our Duke of Edinburgh for this year and the ski trip for next year. Of course, our pupils continue to per form magnificently in terms of their engagement with clubs and our spor ts teams have competed across the county and beyond with great success. Seeing the school develop so quickly has been exciting and a little challenging at times but the commitment of staff and suppor t from pupils and parents has been outstanding
Beyond these events lessons continue to be delivered in a consistent and thoughtful way We look to develop our curriculum in a way that can take its inspiration from the best available We are not constrained by school histor y or resources and instead can work with colleagues excited by the prospect of developing their subject area to enthuse our pupils to achieve School is about extending and improving life chances and by having a large body of staff who have joined the school to take advantage of the oppor tunity to make a difference we are in an excellent place to do just that As always, we look to the next half term with optimism, there is much to look for ward to and much more to be done, but this is always the case in schools!
Mr Adams PBA Principal.

News from St Guthlac’s, Astwick
Februar y sees the days getting longer and there are signs of new life beginning to emerge and we are reminded that light and life are never far away
At the beginning of Februar y, the church celebrates Candlemas or the Presentation of Christ in the Temple remembering when Jesus was 40 days old, and his parents took him to the Temple in Jerusalem, where an older man, Simeon, and an older lady, Anna, recognised him as the saviour promised by God – Jesus, the Light of the World
This is Jesus, the light, and the hope of the world. And just as Mar y and Joseph nur tured their growing child, so we can nur ture light and hope for ourselves, for those we care about and our community Why not light a candle during Februar y and give thanks for light in your life and the that hope Jesus brings.
All are welcome at St Guthlac’s church for the ser vice ever y first Sunday of the month at 11:15am and stay for refreshments after wards!
Ever y Blessing to you all Rev’d Jane Wheatley and Rev’d Jenna Dearden
