Welcome to August!
Last month like hundreds of others, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at STOTFEST 2025! Our glitter stall went down a treat (same again next year?) and judging by the feedback we have received, a fabulous time was had by all We’d to thank the Community Engagement team at Stotfold Town Council for organising this most enjoyable event! (More on our two page picture special on pages 6 & 7 of this month’s issue!)
You may have noticed that our front cover this month was actually snapped at STOTFEST, and was sent in to us by Town Mayor, Cllr Steve Buck - Thanks Steve for allowing us to use it - (at last, the front cover you have always wanted!)
This month we have been speaking to lots of new businesses after we launched an exciting summer initiative for anyone looking to adver tise with us for the first time - Pleasingly, we have been inundated with lots of new enquiries If you happen to spot any of them inside this month’s edition and choose to give them a tr y, please do mention where you found their details as it helps them monitor how well their adver tising works (and hopefully secures us more business for the future!)
We hope you enjoy our August issue - Remember, if you take us along on your holiday this year, be sure to let us know where you have gone - We love to see how far we can travel!
Until next month!

Thank you for capturing the day in such a fabulous way!
My name is Elizabeth, I live in Stotfold and volunteer for Stray2me Rescue I have 3 Romanian rescues, you may have seen me walking my group of dog near Pix Brook school, Dotti is disabled and needs a wheelchair to enable her to go out for walks, she was found in a ditch with her spine broken, she was in a pitiful state, having to have her legs amputated however, she now lives a full life with my 4 other dogs
Stray2me Rescue is a small charity based in the UK, run by volunteers most of whom have adopted dogs from Romania. Primarily we suppor t a number of different rescuers saving lives in areas such as Constanta, Tulcea, Craiova and Bucharest. Our rescuers in Romania save both dogs and cats. The Strays are then placed in safe shelters, for which we help to raise foster funds, money for food and money for veterinar y treatment. Our aim is to find loving 4ever homes for all the Strays we help.
If you are thinking of adopting a rescue dog, please take a look at our website or facebook page, we have both dogs and cats in need of loving homes, some have spent years in our shelters and although they are cared for and provided with food and veterinar y treatment , it's no substitute for a loving home. Not all our rescues are on our website so even if there isn't a dog or cat that catches your eye straight away, we can give you information on our other rescues that may be suitable for your circumstances.
We will guide you through our adoption process and, if you are successful, we guarantee rescue back- up for the life of the animal. You can rest assured you will always be able to get suppor t and advice.
If you would like more information, please complete the enquir y form at www Stray2Me com and one of our volunteers will be more than happy to give you a call at a time convenient to you
If you are not able to adopt but would like to sponsor a stray please visit our website where we have a section on sponsorship

After many dedicated years of ser vice, Jeanette Everitt has retired from her role as Facilities Officer at Stotfold Town Council. Jeanette has been a wonder ful colleague, always going the extra mile and ensuring residents had the best experience possible when hiring our facilities She has always been the first to volunteer for any community events, keen to help in any way possible to make sure the event was positively received by the town Her commitment, warmth and jovial nature will have a lasting effect on those she worked alongside Jeanette will be greatly missed by ever yone at the Council and we wish her all the ver y best in her well-earned retirement

6th Aug - National Playday
13th Aug - Teddy Bear ’s Picnic
25th Aug - Stotfold Walking Market
27th Sep - Screen On The Green
The Council ran a Cemeter y event at the end of April for residents to come to the Chapel, find out more about the origins of the cemeter y and the histor y of the site and buildings This was well attended, with residents being able to examine some of our old documents and registers, as well as learn more about the administration side of the cemeter y and how Deeds and Memorials work
Subsequently we have held several meetings for volunteers to come and help look after the Lower Garden of Rest. A lovely team of people came several times to help weed and tidy the area up, with comments being passed on social media and around the cemeter y which were appreciative of their effor ts.
Keen to get more residents involved, the Town Council are planning a series of events both at the Cemeter y and at the Council offices to inform the local area of the histor y and understand more about the biodiversity of the site. Star ting in September, we plan a monthly drop-in session at the Greenacre Site for residents to come and discuss their family’s histor y, and for residents to use the records we hold to research family histor y and learn more about Deeds of Burial We are also looking to encourage monthly meetings of those residents who are green fingered and would like to help us take care of some of the spaces, clearing some of the older graves, and helping to look after the newer hedging planted recently
Look out on social media for more information about a ‘Bioblit z’ planning to identify flora and fauna in the Cemeter y, inspired by our recent bat sur vey and the increasing flowers and shrubs popping up on site

The easiest way to stay in touch with what is on offer is to use the QR codes on the adver t to the right. You’ll find a variety of helpful links, alongside a calendar of events detailing which ser vices you can use on a day by day basis. You can also register with your local Children’s Centre to receive information and updates direct to your inbox

Another busy month, much the same as last month but a 25% increase in top up bags, which, if we don’t give out goes to landfill. So that’s pleasing to know, we are achieving something in food waste. The value, approximately, if we sold it would be about £5000 in June.
We continue to suppor t other food providers, like Feed up warm up and Kings Community Church on the Jackmans Estate in Letchwor th, on a
weekly basis with food going out to those in most need.
Our shop in Stotfold, continues to help with saving food going in the bin, as does Sandy Baptist Church on a Tuesday and Shefford Methodist Church on a Wednesday. This par t of the project, which is so impor tant, could not operate without the army of volunteers we have and for that we are truly blessed
We cannot operate, without the suppor t we receive, be it by food donations or financial suppor t, but to me all this is priceless We still need your prayers, for the future, as we are moving for ward into a new chapter for the project and things are changing We have a place to call home at last! It is well on the way to phase 1 being ready, which means we can move our food operation and continue with our ministr y seamlessly, from one building to the other
As I said, phase 2 is something that
we pray will come in the near future, when the funds become available, but God has got us this far, so we trust in his favour. The chapel is taking great shape, it looks really different and the builders are doing a great job.
We are all excited about the move, well I am!, but, I think some are a bit ner vous about the flow from one to the other but we will all be glad when we are in as it seems a lifetime since we decided to take it on
In closing, as always, I want to thank ever yone who has the hear t for our project, you are the reason we do what we do
The Bible tells us to feed our hungr y neighbour, we tr y to do this without judgement, because scripture tells us to and that is how Jesus would and did act towards those in difficult situations
Praise God always Gordon.
654 parcels provided in 21 working days • 499 top- up-bags collected from our Pop- up sites • £47,500 estimated value of the food for the month • £6,602.50, the average monthly cost to run the charity 1690 adults, 1464 children & 306 pensioners helped (includes best before food )

Do no-thing to improve functioning.
Summer has officially arrived bringing with it what are at times scorching, energy sapping temperatures We often associate these longer, sometimes warmer, days of August as a time for holidays, rest and reduced activity However, we don’t have to wait for official breaks to practice the impor tant business of resting And while our culture often treats rest as a word for the weak, it is, at least in health, an essential business for all, requiring equal priority with work and play
Within the world of mental health, some disorders of the mind are described as being ‘ treatment resistant’ We could describe our culture as being largely ‘rest-resistant’, as it prioritises busyness and productivity in what is generally a fast paced, noisy,
non- stop culture. A wise friend regularly reminds me that as we are not machines, we do not have to earn rest, for it is the body’s best treatment for maintaining functioning, healing and recover y
As rest is not reser ved for official holidays, it is a nonnegotiable requirement of daily living, to maintain optimum functioning Recently I read an ar ticle evidenced by neuroscience which highlighted the benefits of having daily windows of doing nothing, rather than expecting ourselves to be mentally ‘on’, all the time
Incorporating daily brain breaks of as little as twenty minutes has been shown to improve concentration, focus and executive functioning While it may feel counterintuitive to stop and be, especially when deadlines are looming, it is proven that over time, it is counterproductive not to The neuroscience evidence suggests these brain-breaks can involve movement, music, napping, nature -bathing, meditation, prayer, daydreaming etc It’s official it’s not enough to know this, we must regularly practice our preferred forms of brain-breaks, if wishing to benefit by resetting the system and enhancing productivity

1.Ben, you opened your business at The Wellness Centre at Waterloo Farm just a shor t while ago - how have the first few months been and are you enjoying working in such lovely surroundings?
Busy! People have been ver y generous in suppor ting me and thank you to ever yone including Stotfold News Alex at Waterloo Farm Wellness has done a fantastic job offering a professional yet relaxing environment which is great to work in, my room even has air-conditioning! (a big plus at the moment) I came from a stressful work environment previously and it’s been fantastic to focus on helping patients again
2 It is repor ted that over 60% of adults will experience some type of back pain throughout their lives and live with reoccurring pain for much of their adulthood. What are your top tips for things we can we do ever yday to help avoid this?
My general advice would be to encourage gentle pain free movement, doing something that you enjoy rather than something you feel you must do (as you are more likely to continue doing it) Watching our weight can also help avoid back pain as well If you do find yourself with back pain that reoccurs or has been around for a while then you may want to speak to someone like me to see if we can help.
3. When you are not busy helping people and working Ben, how do you like to relax and unwind?
I do a lot of teaching in the UK and around Europe so I don’t get a lot of time off. When I do I like to go scuba diving locall, or kayaking in the Lake District. I have a 2 year old golden retriever who likes to join in the kayak as well!
4. Finally, we know you would advocate for healthy eating as we know this helps reduce the chances of lots of health issues as we all get older - we also know however that sometimes ever yone is allowed to break the rules! We’d love to know what your favourite cheat meal would be and why? (alongside your favourite tipple of course!)
I’m a massive fan of Indian food and really enjoy spicy food so probably something along those lines As for a tipple I’m quite for tunate to go to Italy regularly so I’d say a glass of red wine (Valpolicella) would be my favourite
We love to learn more about the peo ple that m ak e Stotfold s uch a won derful c ommunity to live in

I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff and also the customers who were so kind to me Thank you so much ever yone.

Dear Editor,
Having recently moved to Stotfold we thought we would walk down to the recently publicised ‘Stotfest’ that took place last weekend. As we have moved from a larger town we had no idea what to expect as we dutifully paid our £2 entr y fee in to the ground Intending to stay n our or so, we arrived at just after 2pm and left at 10pm As suggested, we took picnic rugs and make an afternoon of it, enjoying the music (and the real ale from the beer wagon!) Thanks to ever yone involved in organising the event - We are looking for ward to 2026 already!
James & Hannah Humphrey
Dear Editor,
I’m writing on behalf of Stotfold Bowls Club to say how much we enjoyed being par t of STOTFEST and what a great day it was! Thank you to ever yone at Stotfold Town Council for organising such a brilliant event
It was lovely to chat to local people who braved the hot weather, and we were pleased to receive some enquiries about bowling from former and potential new members of the club We are ver y much hoping that STOTFEST won’t have a fallow year in 2026 (like Glastonbur y!) and that we can get involved once again
The club’s season runs until late September, so there is still plenty of time to come down and join us to learn more or have a go at bowling We are a friendly, inclusive club and enjoy the social side of bowling as much as we do playing the spor t.
Louise Ward (on behalf of Stotfold Bowls Club.)
Dear Editor,
A couple of years ago when walking down to the One Stop Shop, I encountered one of Stotfold’s Senior Citizens I could see he wanted a chat, and I was happy oblige He introduced himself as Edward Hyde, and informed me he was the oldest person in Stotfold. We had a nice chat, and I was glad to have met him. Even though he now lives in Arlesey, I am sure that most people will still consider him to Stotfolds Most Senior Citizen. I would like to take this oppor tunity to wish him a ver y Happy Bir thday.
Yours sincerely

Celebrating Our Community’s Unsung Heroes: The Kids, Families, and Volunteers Who Shine.
If we are to believe all we read in Facebook we are living in a ghetto Now I may be overstating this a bit, but In Stotfold, like so many across Britain hundreds of young people are thriving thanks to the dedication of their families and an army of unsung volunteers. While headlines often focus on childhood obesity or youth disengagement, let’s take a moment to applaud the quieter stor y of resilience, effor t, and community spirit that unfolds ever y week on our spor ts pitches, dance studios, and scout halls Here in Stotfold, children are learning far more than just skills they’re building character From toddlers kicking their first football to teenagers navigating Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, our town buzzes with activity
Take Stotfold Juniors FC, a Club of the Year winner in 2023, which fields over 80 inclusive teams, star ting with eager three -year-olds. Or the acclaimed Gifford Dance Academy, whose per formers have graced stages from Disneyland Paris to Silverstone’s British Grand Prix Scouts, mar tial ar ts, rugby, and DofE groups add to the tapestr y, offering discipline, camaraderie, and adventure beyond the classroom Nationally, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award alone drew 250,000 young par ticipants last year and here, we regularly see backpack- toting groups setting off into the countr yside, guided by devoted volunteers I’d wager similar scenes play out in towns ever ywhere, where parents and mentors give tirelessly to keep kids engaged, active, and hopeful
Yes, challenges exist, and they demand attention But today, let’s cheer, and be proud for the children who show up, the families who suppor t them, and the volunteers who make it all possible Their quiet commitment is the antidote to despair and it deser ves our recognition.
Stewar t Craig

This is the month we wave a fond farewell to our Year 4 leavers; they will be hugely missed but are more than ready for the next step in their educational journey
This is our final update of the year from our current Year 3 and 4 team:
In Year 3, we star ted the summer term with our third trip of the year We visited Hazard Alley in Milton Keynes which teaches all about staying safe in different scenarios It was a ver y educational trip, and the children learned a lot about safety, working in small groups throughout the day
To mark the excitement of the Women’s European Football Championships, we hosted a special Football Fun Day! The whole school got involved, with pupils arriving in their favourite football kits or spor ty outfits
In Geography, our focus has been on South America, with a deep dive into the wonders of the Amazon Rainforest. Meanwhile, in Histor y, we’ve been journeying through time to learn about the fascinating Maya civilisation of Central America.
Step Up Day was a big success, giving the children a chance to meet their new Year 4 teachers and get a taste of what’s to come. Mr Stephen.
In Year 4, we had a fantastic Summer term with lots of exciting activities to celebrate our Year 4 children leaving and moving onto their new schools in September. Before the end of year celebrations began, we enjoyed our new histor y topic 'The Ancient Egyptians' We also had a topic day where the children had great fun dressing up and per forming a pharaoh's burial complete with a life - size coffin!
Another highlight of the term was our annual Dance Morning, we enjoyed this year's ‘Numbers’ theme, choreographing and dancing along to '5, 6, 7, 8', 'Year 3000' and 'Blame It on the Boogie'
In July, as well as putting on our Leavers show for parents 'I'm a Year 4 Get Me Out of Here', we had a par ty on the playground with BBQ food and an ice cream van and created yearbooks as a memento of the children's time at Roecroft. I would like to take the oppor tunity to wish our wonder ful Year 4 leavers the ver y best of luck at their new schools!
Miss Houghton
Wishing you all a wonder ful summer break, Mrs Cross
Welcome to our August news: Following a ver y busy Summer term, we said goodbye to our Year 4 children They have enjoyed an eventful last year with their visits to the O2 and Duxford, not to mention their residential trip to Rock UK They celebrated their last few days with a special church ser vice, disco, talent show and Leavers Assembly with parents invited on the last day of term
Our other children have also enjoyed school trips to Shepreth Wildlife and Mead Farm along with Faith Tours, Hazard Alley, Stotfold Mill visits and Cinema trips to name a few! Much fun was had by all with many new experiences gained, especially for our youngest children! For some the coach journey was excitement enough!
Our Spor ts Week was great fun and a huge success with the children and we managed to work around the Great British weather! As always there are lots of pictures on the website to view!

Football Club - Where it all began..
This month we take a look back at the histor y of our local football club - when did football first arrive in our town?
The first recorded football in the town was 1904, however it is cer tain that the game was played for a number of years before that In those early 1900s, Stotfold sides played in the Biggleswade and District League This was followed by a spell of nearly 30 years in Nor th Her ts Football
Carpentry & General Handyman Service
The first record of a trophy being won was 1911 when Potton were beaten 1-0 in the Biggleswade and District Championship
FC was officially founded after WW2 in 1946.
In 1951 they joined the South Midlands League Division 2 and in 1953 were promoted to Division 1
Up until 1965 the SFC home ground was located at Hitchin Road Recreation Ground. Football was ver y much at the centre of the community and locals in the village clubbed together sufficient funds to purchase a meadow named 'Roker', (previously used in 1911 by Stotfold Athletic), and developed the ground aptly named Roker Park which they occupied for 54 years.
The club moved from Roker Park to their current Arlesey Road site in Februar y 2020.

Tucked between the fields, sits our village church We may only have one ser vice per month, but there is something quite special about it It’s relaxed, welcoming and a peaceful respite from the unpredictability of life or weather!
