St. Mark’s News Volume 15/Issue 8

From the Curate I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for how special St. Mark’s has made me feel in my first month and a half. Not just me, but my entire family. We have received so much kindness from God’s people at St. Mark’s. I have enjoyed the genuineness of those I have met and the love of life and God. Because my family and I have been so well accepted, it is an understatement to say you have endeared yourselves to us.

Luke cannot wait to get to “church” each week. It has confirmed to us that Suzanne and I are exactly where we should be.

Those things about which I am so passionate match the things St. Mark’s honors and cherishes as well. You are a creative people, whether it is through cooking or the various hobbies and interests and certainly the discussions of faith to which I have been privy. But what I have been most impressed with is the desire to know the Scriptures more. Christians wanting to understand more deeply and experience faith more fully is a beautiful thing! Further confirmation Suzanne and I are in the right place.

Accordingly, as the new Church school year draws near, the staff has worked hard to honor this most laudable yearning. Careful planning has produced a full calendar with plenty of options for everyone.

We have been quite intentional about building from our strengths here at St. Mark’s. Among these are the Godly Play classes. We have been blessed with talented and caring storytellers, who love the kiddos and take their task seriously. We can only build upon these efforts. In fact, a third Godly Play class is being offered when classes begin on September 9. In addition to the 3-year old-class and a 1st -2nd grade class, we are offering a 2-year-old class with parents! This class is offered to “little ones” who traditionally are too young for the Godly Play program. But they can sit on mommy’s or daddy’s lap and listen to the story.

New things are in store for the older ages too. The 3rd, 4th & 5th grade class through high school will be focused on each student reading his or her own Bible in class and learning various connections between the Old and New Testaments. In doing so the students will see both the grittiness and the loveliness of characters who are sometimes glossed over. The youth will be encouraged to think “bigger” and imagine more colorfully about stories they have heard much of their lives, and perhaps be introduced to stories they are not yet familiar with.

Adult Formation in the fall also promises to be interesting and varied: Tracy Eilers talking to us about finding forever homes for foster kids; Ross Ramsey leading a discussion about religion and politics; Kevin Leahey talking about Jesus as a neuroscientist; and Carol Oppel's eight-week class on "The Flowering of Anglicanism." And this is just Sunday morning! Please check out the weekly calendar to see that there is something for everyone.

Mission and Ministry Meals Set for October As summer draws to a close and summer vacations come to an end, we begin to think about the fall approaching and St. Mark’s Stewardship Month of Mission and Ministry meals in October. This annual event is planned to gather together to talk about the opportunities available to be better stewards for St. Mark’s. This year’s meals will be held on Sundays: Oct. 7, 21, and 28, after the 11 o’clock service.

Many of you probably signed up at Rally Day, but if you haven’t signed up yet, the sign-up sheets are available in the Parish Hall. You can select from three favorite menus: chicken, brisket, or fajitas. You only have to sign up to bring a side dish or a dessert. As the time approaches, you will be reminded of your sign-up date – just in case you forget.

St. Mark’s is organized under the guiding principles of Worship, Education, Outreach, and Discipleship.

There are numerous programs of our mission and ministry that serve to implement these principles. This year as part of our M&M meal program we will hear from a select group of them. Although we all have an opportunity to sign up for these programs during Rally Day, this will be an opportunity for their leaders to talk about their ministry, who participates, and what the future holds for these programs. The Finance Committee will also present the proposed 2013 budget and you will be given a pledge card which you will be asked to fill out and return on All Saints Sunday, November 4th. So don’t miss this chance to learn about St. Mark’s stewardship programs, enjoy great company and of course a great meal!

Planning for the Inevitable. And speaking of the Columbarium we will have a seminar that same day on

“Planning for the Inevitable.” The seminar will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Included in our discussion will be Living Wills, Medical Power of Attorney, and long-term health insurance. We will also talk about funeral planning and arrangements. The only cost for the day will be the expense of lunch.

Meet Our New Seminarians Vivian Orndorff and Jonathan Hansen join Jeremiah Griffin as seminarians at St. Mark’s. Be sure to say “hi” next time you see them!

Vivian Orndroff. I am originally from Cincinnati, Ohio but have also lived in Virginia, Florida and Kansas. I have been married to my husband Pat for 18 years and have two teenage children—Katey and Matthew—who attend McCallum High School. Pat is the Technical Theater Director at The Alley theatre in Houston. Prior to seminary I worked in the arts as a Stage Manager and Arts Administrator for 25 years. I am also a musician and enjoy nature, movies and museums.

My family moved to Texas from Manhattan, KS, so that I could attend the Seminary of the Southwest. I am a second-year Master of Divinity student and am sponsored by Bishop Dean Wolfe and the Diocese of Kansas. The kids and I got to spend the summer in Houston with Pat so that I could complete a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital and they could attend summer camp at The Alley theatre.

The journey to follow God’s call has been long, and I am excited about this next phase - being a part of the St. Mark’s community and my second year of seminary. Thank you for opening your home to our family as we walk together.

Jonathan Hansen. Jonathan Hansen is a mid-west boy, reared in Iowa by Baptist parents with two brothers, all of whom he thinks the world of. He was a fun kid growing up, loving the outdoors, his pet dog, and friends at school. Into his teen-age years, however, he began running with a rather unsavory crowd and took up practices that were not the healthiest. He strayed from the church, did poorly in school, and had a less-than-ideal relationship with his family.

When he was 15, he had a profound conversion experience. His whole world was turned upside down as he was shown firsthand the destructive power of sin, and the infinitely more powerful grace of God in Christ. From that point, he plugged into a great youth group in which his calling to enter Christian ministry began to grow and be affirmed by those around him. Eventually, he began to pursue that calling more seriously as he taught Bible at a Christian day school in Chicago while he worked on his theology degree.

Jonathan’s education was put on hold by his grandfather's illness. This brought him back to Iowa, where he could give his grandpa care and company in his last days.

While there, he bought and ran an espresso bar (where he met his darling, beautiful bride, Jessica).

It wasn't long before Jonathan’s calling to ministry began to prod him into further training. In response to the prodding, he moved to London UK, where he received his B.D. from Spurgen's College, a Baptist institution. While there, a strange thing happened. Through the influence of many of his Anglican teachers, and the church he began attending, he became Anglican! This created a bit of a quandary for him. So, upon arrival back in Iowa, he and his wife began attending the Episcopal Church in his tiny home town, worked at the espresso bar that he had started years before, and waited for the congregation to recognize his calling to the priesthood, which thankfully they did.

They and his bishop, however, thought that it would be wise and prudent for him to get a little further Anglicizing, which brings him to the Seminary of the Southwest, where he is working on his M.Div. He is very excited about getting the chance to do his field education at St. Mark's. Jessica and Jonathan have seen a lot of the Episcopal churches in Austin, and liked them all, but were particularly struck with the energy and activity present here. Tuesday Brown Bag Bible Study Resumes September 4 Join us on Tuesday, September 4 for the resumption of our th Tuesday noon Brown Bag Bible study. On the 4 we will share a pizza lunch and get started on our study of the shorter New Testament epistles. From September through January we will study Philippians, Colossians, I and II Thessalonians, I and II Timothy, I and II Peter, I, II, and III John, and Jude. If you have your own NRSV translation of the Bible, bring it; if not we have enough copies for everyone.

From February through March we will study a book by Frank A. Spina, professor of Old Testament at Seattle Pacific University: The Faith of an Outsider. We will conclude the year with a study of the prophet Hosea. The class will be taught by the clergy.

Flowering of Anglicanism to be presented

From the Garden . . .

With withering heat and scattered thunderstorms that largely missed St. Mark’s, our grounds are merely marking time until fall brings cooler weather and a hint of rain. September doesn’t promise much in the matter of cool, but it does take us closer to one of gardening’s two best months: October and April. Those of you who have been thinking of a project to do, now is a great time to take it forward. Personally, I am really looking forward to Becky Nolan and Roberta Pazdral working their fall magic on the corner in October with pumpkins and chrysanthemums.

Their artistry delights the entire neighborhood!

We have recently invested in a heavier duty hose reel for the front garden, as our existing one has been malfunctioning for about 5 years! Ease of hose use is pretty key to keeping folks interested in watering and digging new beds. Dee Ann Thomasson and Joanne Foote have been struggling the most lately to water all that withers.

We have also asked for a bid on extending the sprinkler system to McKinney Island, where intrepid Al defies the 100 plus temperatures caring for the new shrubs and laying stones in the gravel paths so our fashion forward footwear doesn’t create a casualty. The pavers are numerous, perfectly laid, and leveled in the gravel, in typical McKinney perfection. He makes it look easy, but we all know what he does out there is not! With the St. Mark’s yard sale just around the corner, we expect that more people will really notice the garden that once was a wild cedar tangle prior to Eagle Scout Drew Edgerton and volunteers clearing it out and creating paths and benches, followed by Eagle Scout Will Smith and company working on the paths so they did not erode into the parking lot.

Its final evolution involved the loving addition of roses and native shrubbery, a hand-hewn cross by James Wier, and the stepping stone pathways. Another example of many hands making a difference.

Thanks to those of you who stopped by on Rally Day to participate in our “Adopt a Spot” projects. Now may not always be the right time for everyone, but eventually it might be, and when it is, dig in and behold the difference a single person can make!

September 2012 September 30 - November 25 in Adult Christian Formation Did you know that rumor has it that Anne Boleyn had six fingers? And that Henry VIII’s unbridled desire to bed her was not by a long shot the only reason Anglicanism came into being?

Join us in the chapel at 10:00 a.m. beginning Sunday, September 30, for an eight-Sunday Adult Christian Formation series: The Flowering of Anglicanism: Midwives, Midhusbands, Masterminds and Martyrs. We will take an in-depth look at the birth and development of Anglicanism, the mother lode of all Episcopalians hold dear. Our classes will take us from the 1380s through the 1660s, and will highlight some of the midwives, midhusbands (yes, a real Wiki term meaning male midwife), masterminds and martyrs whose deeds marked for survival our beloved Anglican faith tradition—the people and events most critical to the survival of Anglicanism.

Our Timeline: starting with the first English Bibles, we will sweep through the Protestant Reformation on the Continent, then move to the inception and flowering of the English Reformation, including a bountiful discussion of Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, the principal architect of our beloved Book of Common Prayer. We will end with the Caroline Divines -- those devoted men who helped hold together and embolden the emerging Church of England, throughout the beheading of a king, vicious civil wars, and Oliver Cromwell and the Commonwealth, until the restoration of the monarchy under Charles II. We will remember players, known and not so well known, who knowingly or unknowingly, wittingly or unwittingly, helped to birth, establish and guide to stability Anglicanism and the Church of England. The saviors of the Church who risked their fortunes and their lives -- many of whom were burned or beheaded-- to whom we owe overwhelming gratitude for the privileges and blessings of worshiping as Episcopalians.

Music Notes September is an exciting time at St. Mark’s! We return to three services, programs and classes start up again, and we hold our annual parish yard sale. September is also when our choirs return. This is a great month to join one of our choirs, while we’re learning new music and greeting old and new friends.

Children in first grade and older are invited to sing with the St. Mark’s Choristers. In Choristers we build on the music education the children receive in school, learning about beautiful singing, tone production, and diction. We develop our rhythmic and musical skills through a weekly game. We learn about worship, especially about how the words of the songs we sing relate to our lives. By singing in church services monthly, we build confidence and remind the children that they are active participants in the liturgy. Most of all, we create a sense of community and friendship by making music together.

Adults and Young Adults (high school and up) are invited to sing with the Adult Choir. The Adult Choir performs a wide variety of choral literature spanning the centuries from the Renaissance to the present day. The choir includes members from a variety of musical backgrounds. Some of us have no formal musical training and others of us are professional musicians. What binds us together is a love of singing, a dedication to service, and the friendships that we form in choir.

Choristers rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 6:15 – 7:00. They will sing in worship for the first time on Sunday, September 30 at the 9:00 service.

Adult Choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 8:30. They will sing in worship for the first time on Sunday, September 9 at the 11:00 service.

September 2012 Rally Day marked the kick-off of our fall programming, which begins on September 9. In preparation for this year’s Church School classes, volunteers began planning in the summer. St. Mark’s is blessed to have a rich supply of volunteers committed to sharing their time and talents with the children of our church. These people lead Church School classes, Children’s Chapel, and coach youth lectors and youth acolytes, to name a few ministries in which adults interact with and share their faith with our young people. This year, along with the work of our volunteers, we are fortunate to have help from the Rev. Travis Smith.

Travis has a passion for sharing the stories of our faith. After picking out some of the more interesting stories of the Bible, Travis created a list that will be the backbone of a six-year journey through the Bible for children from 3rd through 12th grades. The stories will give the children a larger view of the relationship that the people of God have with God, both ancient and modern. Travis will lead the Bible study for a combined Middle School and High School class on Sunday, before they break into two classes for age-appropriate response activities.  High School Class (9-12th graders): Day School Classroom (through October 28) Led by Danielle Adkins, Jay Brown and Matt Lamon.  Middle School Class (6th - 8th graders): Day School Building Following the opening Bible study, this group will be led by Kathy Genet and Harry Lipp.  Confirmation Class: Bennett Wing Classroom For 7th graders and above interested in being confirmed, classes will meet in the Bennett Wing classroom from September 23 through October 28. The class will be led by seminarians Jeremiah Griffin and Vivian Orndorff using the With God’s Help confirmation curriculum. After Confirmation Class ends on October 28, 7th graders will join the Middle School Class. Confirmation will take place on January 27, 2013.  3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Class: Classroom D, main building This group will also benefit from Travis’ work. The class will meet with David Genet and other parent assistants, to hear the stories of Bible heroes and villains. The discussions in class will continue as the children explore the stories through drama, art, and games.  Godly Play We will continue to offer Godly Play classes for younger children, including a new class, Godly Play for Parents and Toddlers! Along with parents who will be our Door Persons, storytellers Jennifer Baumgart, the Rev. Kelly Jennings, Henry Olivas, Margaret Schlankey, and I will lead three classes. We are very excited to add Jennifer and Kelly to our team, who will assist with the new class for Toddlers!  Godly Play for Parents & Toddlers: Classroom B We will meet to hear a Godly Play story. Afterwards the parents and their 2 and 3 year olds will have time to visit and get to know each other better.  Godly Play & Godly Play Two: Common Room & Parish Hall, respectively Children in Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten are invited to Godly Play in the Common Room. Godly Play Two for 1st and 2nd graders will meet in the Parish hall behind the portable walls to hear the same story. Both classes will hear the same stories this month, Circle of the Church Year, The Holy Family, Creation, and The Flood and the Ark. Upon the return to three services on September 2, Children’s Chapel services for 4 to 6 year olds will be available during both the 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services. In order to provide a safe environment in which our children can worship and play, we will continue to ask a parent to help our Chapel leaders during each Chapel service. Chapel leaders this year are Anna Bryan-Borja, Kevin Cromack, Amy Farley, Henry Olivas, Mai Rogers, Diana Stangl and Cathy Nelson.

For Adults Adult Formation classes meet in Grace Chapel at 10:00 on Sunday mornings. Classes will resume on Sunday, September 9. Here is the schedule of classes for September: 

September 9. Finding Forever Homes for Foster Kids. Tracy Eilers, the Director of Foster Care for Cenpatico, and her adopted daughter Brittany, will be with us to talk about the foster care system and about the need for “forever homes” for children and teens in foster care. Cenpatico, for whom Tracy works, is an accredited managed Behavioral Healthcare Organization dedicated to improving the lives of the more than 1.5 million members they serve in 10 states. Their expertise lies in managing benefits for vulnerable populations.



September 16. Impolite Company: Politics and Religion. Ross Ramsey, the Executive Editor of the Texas Tribune, will continue the discussion we began last spring on Religion and Politics. The discussion will include an analysis of the influence of the Tea Party Movement on the electoral vote.



September 23. Jesus the Neuroscientist: An Exploration of How the Brain Fits in with the Teachings of Jesus. Kevin Leahy, JD, is the founder of Knowledge Advocate, LLC. He teaches a brain training course called the Mind Athlete Program, and he will discuss how brain science breakthroughs shed new light on the teachings of Jesus Christ. Kevin shares the unique relationship brain science now reveals between where love happens in the brain as opposed to where fear and anger erupt.



September 30. The Flowering of Anglicanism. (See a full description of this class elsewhere in the Newsletter.) Carol Oppel begins her eight-week series on the history of Anglicanism. This class is required for adults who are interested in being confirmed or received in the Episcopal Church on January 27 when Bishop Harrison makes her visitation to St. Mark’s. It is a requirement for some; encouraged for all!

Any adults over the age of 18 who have not been confirmed or received in the Episcopal Church and would like to do so on January 27, please talk to Elizabeth+ and let her know of your interest/intention.

Parishioner Highlights As I read this wonderful collaborative effort by the Petereks, I’m thinking that Bob did some of the dictation and Marie applied her teaching skills and put it all into context. Great job you two—and the BBQ humor certainly made me laugh, as I’m sure it will our parishioners. According to the parish register, the Petereks have been members since May 1983.

Raish was on his last few months as rector before he was forced to retire because of health, but the sermon we heard that made us join had the theme of “everyone is welcome at St. Mark’s . . . this is what Jesus would want." We immediately felt at home.

Many of our oldest friends originated through our working on the chicken barbeque, building the playground, and serving on committees. Bob served 4 times as Senior Warden. I served as the Junior Warden for a brief spell before we moved to New Orleans.

My main focus was the day school and getting the additions built—plus the design and construction of the playground—but I found the time to sing in the choir under the direction of Doug Greene. Bob has been on just about every committee the church has: building, finance, long-term planning, and vestry. He has served every rector of St. Mark’s in some sort of leadership role.

An anecdote about our time here: The chicken

barbeque has evolved at St. Mark’s for many reasons, but none more than the year of the bloody freezer.

About a GRILLION more chickens were cooked than usual due to the prior year's shortage. Naturally, hundreds of chicken halves did not sell. Cooking them took into the afternoon, well past when the actual selling time was over. Chicken halves were wrapped and spread over every available surface to cool. Later that night, several of the cooks returned to stuff the chickens into the freezer. Bright and

early Sunday morning, our rector, Scotty, went to the kitchen for his morning coffee and was greeted with what can only be described as a scene from a Stephen King movie: blood all over the floor in front of the freezer. Yes, indeed . . . not only were the chickens undercooked, the freezer had become overloaded during the night from the slightly warm chickens packed to the freezer's gills. We learned many things over the years about do's and do not's of our barbecue, usually the hard way! However, the fellowship and bonding from that annual event have solidified many friendships over the decades.

Marie: Cooking...I worked with caterers in a former life making wedding cake. Also travel, reading, and grandchildren!
