St. Mark’s News Volume 22/Issue 11

From the Rector God is working here right now I want to say a huge and resounding thank you to those of you who submitted a pledge for 2019. I am deeply humbled and inspired by your generous commitments to this place. Pledges are, of course, not the only measure of one’s commitment or generosity, but, they are certainly on the list. Where we put our money tells a story about what we value in this world, and I’m left with the impression that you value this place very much. In fact, to date, our pledges indicate to me that God is right now doing something special in the hearts of the people of St. Mark’s. Consider the In this Issue spiritual significance of this: Over half of you who submitted pledges this year decided to increase your pledge from the From the Rector .........................1 previous year. Advent Schedule ........................2 Parish Life ..................................2

We pledge across a wide range—from the double to the Day School News .......................4 quintuple digits—but I’m not so interested in the amounts on Outreach ....................................5 the pledge cards. I’m interested—no, that’s the wrong word— Family Ministry ...........................6 I’m awestruck by the number of you that have increased your Music Notes ...............................8 Parishioner Highlights ................9 commitments to this place. Is it possible that this represents a Celebrations .............................10 holy risk for you and your family? Is it possible that this means ROTA .......................................11 you will expect more from St. Mark’s—more from God?—this year than you did last year? Is it possible that your eyes will be pried more-widely open this year than last to see what God is up to? To see what God is going to transform your money into and then offer back to the world as a beautiful gift? Is it possible that this next year will be the most important—the most transformational—year of your life? What a thought! This is only one of the many indications to me that God is up to something special right now at St. Mark’s. Of course there’s many more. Maybe it’s just baby-Rector nerve, but this feels like a big one right now. I thank God that I get to be part of this journey with you, and I’m grateful to be on the path with such brave and courageous brothers and sisters as you. Pray for me. I’m praying for you. Zac+

Men’s Group: 2nd Monday of the Month The St. Mark’s Men’s Group meets on the second Monday of (most) every month, for dinner, conversation, and a little business! Currently, five cooking teams rotate through the schedule and provide meals on their team’s designated date. Daughters of the King The Daughters of the King is a group whose members live by a rule of prayer and service. Our local chapter at St. Mark’s is active and is a great group of women. Praying for others is a great way to knit together the various generations of St. Mark’s members and our larger community! Work through the Order is a way to get closer to God and is a rewarding way to participate in the life of this Parish. We will be starting a training schedule for people who might be interested in joining the Order. Please email Heather Azarmehr at azarmehr@sbcglobal.net for more information. Also, as the rush of the holiday season looms, take a short pause in calming the mind and refocusing on the reason for the season by joining us at The Advent Quiet Day on Saturday, December 8 from 10:00 a.m. -2:00 p.m. This event is open to everyone —men and women, it is free, and lunch is provided. Our Quiet Day is organized to have an array of corporate and private meditation times. Resources are available to try new forms of prayer and meditation techniques. December 2018 Altar Guild Gratitude Many thanks to Clarence Bonnen, Scott Forrest, and Ryan Marquess for their invaluable help in taking down the hanging candle holder over the aumbry (tabernacle). Once the brass was cleaned and sealed, the men did that very tall ladder-climbing thing again and put it back up. This involved cleaning the dirty ladder, too. We hope that exercise won’t have to be repeated for a long time. Clarence also installed a much-needed bracket to hold up the long dowel in the vesting room closet. By the time this is published, he will have put up a peg hanger for the cinctures (rope belts) next to the mirror as well. St. Mark’s Altar Guild offers many thanks to a lot of fellow parishioners because you have been wonderful about responding to our requests for help. We are so very grateful. We may be asking for assistance at our semi-annual Spruce Up on the morning of December 22. We’re still working out the details on that, so please hold that date open.

Lion’s Pride: Day School News November 8 & 9 we held the 5th annual St. Mark’s Day School Art Show. The show is curated by our art teacher Victoria Houtman, this year our theme was “Keep Our Seas Plastic Free.” The children created art projects using recycled materials as well as doing representational pieces of sea life. It was so nice to see so many parents, grandparents, and friends support the show by coming to view the art. We were so pleased that Father Zac asked us to leave many of the displays up so members of the congregation could view and enjoy. During the season of Thanksgiving and Christmas we find ourselves thankful for our school, and most importantly for the love and support we receive from you, the church. The children, families, and faculty wish each of you a very blessed holiday season. December will be a short month for us as we will be closed between December 21st – January 3. December 19 & 20 we will host our annual Christmas Chapel at 11 a.m., the theme is Christmas Around the World. The children have been working on Christmas songs that represent different parts of the world. Each class has chosen a different song and they will sing for family and friends.

Outreach Angel Tree Are you familiar with SAFE Austin? Austin Children's Shelter and Safe Place teamed up to provide collaborative services to Stop Abuse For Everyone. Domestic abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, education, religion, disability status or sexual orientation. It can happen to couples who are married, living together or dating. Teen dating violence; violence within gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender relationships; violence against people with disabilities; and violence against deaf people of all identities are common scenarios, yet often overlooked. The tags on the Angel Tree this year are for 80 children and youth supported by SAFE, Stop Abuse For Everyone. Domestic abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, education, religion, disability status or sexual orientation. If you missed out on an Angel Tag November 25, it's not too late to give to a child in need. You can still participate by: 1. Leaving a donation (checks made out to SAFE Alliance) in the brown box by the tree. By making a monetary donation to SAFE, you are providing direct resources where and when they are needed the most. All the gifts made to SAFE before Dec. 31 will be matched dollar for dollar by the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, so your gift will go twice as far for survivors in Central Texas. You can even donate online. 2. Purchasing a gift off one of their online wish lists at Amazon or Target. For Amazon's shipping info, select Suzy Day's address. Please bring Angel Tree gifts—and tags—unwrapped, by Sunday, Dec. 9th. To learn more about SAFE Austin, check out http://www.safeaustin.org.** SAFE provides an expansive continuum of services, such as housing for children, youth and families facing abuse, face-to-face support through counseling, forensic nursing exams, legal aid, and sexual assault victim advocacy, as well as, education and prevention for all ages, gender, and abilities. SAFE also maintains a 24 hour hotline to talk, text, and online chat with victims. Click here (http://www.safeaustin.org/lost-girls/) to learn about one girl's journey with SAFE.

December 2018

Family Ministry December is my favorite time of the year: a time for fun & frivolity, family & friends, a time of good cheer. However, Advent reminds us that it is also a time for quiet anticipation and thoughtful introspection. It is sometimes hard in the hustle-bustle of the holiday season to slow down and contemplate, in stillness and wonder, the arrival of that baby in Bethlehem two thousand years ago, but I find that I can make space for those musings if I am intentional as I go about the activities that have become traditions in my family, whether it’s making cookies or wrapping presents. St. Mark’s is often a busy place, but during this time of year there are even more activities than usual: the Christmas pageant, wreath-making, buying presents for the Angel Tree, and more. Even as we gear up in our preparations to celebrate the arrival of the Messiah, my hope is that you and your family will join with the St. Mark’s family in observing our beloved traditions, with intention and good cheer. For more information or to fill one of the volunteer spots, contact Cindy Cabler (ccabler@stmarksaustin.org). Below is the rundown of Advent activities, including Christmas Pageant parts/speaking roles selection (December 2), and rehearsal schedule:

December 2 – Advent I, 10 a.m., Parish Hall: Advent Wreath-Making Enjoy some wassail and make a memory with your family and friends as you make a new wreath for your family or refresh an old one. Children will have a table to create a wreath of their very own, too. Additional resources to help you and your family celebrate the season will also be available in the parish hall. Pageant prep begins—Common Room, 10:00 a.m. Opportunity alert: Help set up tables before, help clean up after (adult/youth)

December 9 – Advent II, 9 a.m. & 11 a.m. services, 10 a.m. reception: St. Nicholas will be here! The venerable Bishop of Myra, St. Nicholas, will be making an appearance as we celebrate his feast day. He will join us at both the 9 a.m. & 11 a.m. services, and we will hear a special Godly Play story during Children’s Chapel. Please plan to come to the reception at 10am in the Parish Hall to meet St. Nick and maybe get a selfie with him, as well as sweets and good cheer. Every Sunday until Christmas, 10 a.m., Common Room: Christmas Pageant Rehearsals It’s that time of year—time for the annual Christmas Pageant. There are parts for all who wish to participate! We have both speaking and non-speaking roles; we even accept walk-ons the night of the pageant, as we encourage young family members who are visiting to participate, too – there’s always room for another shepherd, sheep or angel! We also welcome participation “behind the scenes” by our youth, helping the children learn their lines and lead them to their positions as well as providing the much-needed support for the scenery. December 2, 10 a.m., Common Room – begin choosing parts and assigning speaking roles; pick out costumes. December 9, 10 a.m., Common Room – continue choosing parts & costumes; practice lines. December 16, 10 a.m., Common Room – continue practicing.

Page 6

December 2018 December 23, 10 a.m., Common Room – continue practicing. December 24, 4:45 p.m., Common Room – assemble & dress for pageant, with a quick run-through (and photo op). Opportunity alert: Volunteers (adult, requires SGC certification) needed to help manage costumes and run rehearsals. Volunteers (youth) needed to help children learn their lines and where to go during rehearsals. Volunteers, both adult & youth, are also needed on Christmas Eve to manage the young actors and to operate the backdrops.

December 16, 23 & 30 – 10 a.m., Outside Deck: Family Taco Hour No tacos on December 2nd or 9th due to the previously mentioned family celebrations. Taco service will resume on the 16th. However, there will be NO supervised playground time, due to pageant rehearsals. Children & youth of all ages are invited to take part in the pageant. Opportunity alert: Parents are greatly encouraged to help with pageant rehearsals.

Children’s Chapel/Godly Play: Advent Sundays in December – 9 a.m. & 11 a.m. Every Sunday during Advent, we offer Children’s Chapel at both the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services. Children begin the service in the Sanctuary with their parents. After the opening Collect, the priest invites the children to gather behind the Children’s Chapel Crucifer to process out to their Chapel. They rejoin their parents after the Peace for Communion. (There will be no Children’s Chapel on December 30, so that the children can participate in the Carol Sing service.) Here are the stories we will encounter this month: December 2: The Holy Family*/Advent I – On this first Sunday in Advent, we will change our colors in church and on our calendar to purple and Sarum blue (as seen on the altar at St. Mark’s), the colors of royalty and anticipation. The people of 2000 years ago were waiting for a Messiah, and we wait today. We reacquaint ourselves with the Holy Family and remember the prophets who pointed us to Bethlehem, the city where King David had been born 1000 years earlier. They knew something special was to happen there, though they were not clear what it was. Nevertheless, they told the people to “Pay attention, for something amazing will happen in the City of David.” December 9: Advent II – On the second Sunday in Advent, we continue to prepare for the Mystery of Christmas. As we move toward the City of David, Bethlehem, guided by the pointing prophets, we remember the Holy Family’s journey. Also on this Sunday, St. Mark’s will host a very special visitor, St. Nicholas; we will prepare to meet him by learning about the very real saint, the Bishop of Myra, and how he always wanted to give gifts to the Christ Child present in every child. December 16: Advent III – As we get closer to the mystery that is Christmas, on the third Sunday in Advent we remember the shepherds who were standing in their fields around Bethlehem keeping their sheep. They were called by the angels to run to Bethlehem to see the Child who will change everything. December 23: Advent IV – On the fourth Sunday of Advent we remember the three kings, the Magi, who came from the East. They were so wise that people thought they were magic. They had great knowledge of the stars, and when they saw a wild star that was not on their maps, they knew they should follow it to see where it was going and what it would show them. December 30: No Children’s Chapel. On this first Sunday after Christmas, St. Mark’s will hold our traditional Carol Sing service in which all are welcome to participate. Everyone is invited to call out their favorite Christmas carol, and we will sing a verse or two. Children’s Chapel will resume in January.

Page 7

December 2018 Opportunity alert: Volunteer (adult/youth) to help the storyteller set up before the 9 a.m. Chapel or put things away after the 11 a.m. Volunteer (adult) to be the Children’s Crucifer/Doorkeeper (requires SGC certification); youth are also eligible to volunteer as Crucifer. If you enjoy telling stories, volunteer (adult) as Storyteller (requires SGC and Godly Play training). Additional Opportunity for Volunteer Nursery substitutes (adult; requires SGC certification) Sundays, 8:45 a.m. until 12:15 p.m.; 1- or 2-hour shifts available. Also needed: help with Christmas Eve shift, 5:15 p.m. until 6:45 p.m.

Music Notes Plan to attend A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols presented by the St. Mark’s Choir, Youth Ensemble, and Choristers on Sunday, December 16th at 11 a.m. The choirs will be accompanied by Amy Papalexandrou, Luke Thiessen, and Matthew Boyer on piano, Iona Olive on violin, along with Reed and Meredith Shaw playing percussion. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the famed service of Lessons and Carols at King’s College, Cambridge that is broadcast around the world by the BBC every Christmas Eve. This service centers around nine readings (lessons) that tell the Christmas story. Throughout the service, our choirs will sing beautiful carols for the Advent and Christmas seasons. This is a special way to prepare our hearts and minds for Christmas. Please invite your friends and neighbors to attend! We also hope you’ll join us for beautiful music on Christmas Eve! The Choristers will sing for the 5:30 p.m. pageant service. The St. Mark’s Choir will sing for the 10 p.m. service. Plan to arrive early—the choir will present a concert of Christmas music at 9:40 p.m.

Parishioner Highlights So many of you parishioners have repeatedly asked me, “When are you going to feature Beth Greenlee in one of the articles?” So your wish has come true! I do believe that Beth has had one of the most interesting and diverse career paths that I have had the pleasure to write about! Beth – beautiful, gracious, and always ready to assist! What more can I say! So in speaking to her last sentence that she wrote for the article I feel that it is we who are incredibly blessed to have her with us at St. Mark’s! ~ Beth Chenoweth

Beth Greenlee I moved to Austin from Snohomish, Washington in 2013 to live with my daughter and son-in–law: Elizabeth and Philip Turner. From the time I arrived I have been warmly welcomed by a new group of friends. In the years that I have been at St. Mark’s I have become a member of the Daughters of the King, I have joined the Quilters’ group, I have joined the other volunteers for the Shower Ministry, and in December I will have joined the monthly Friday Page Turners’ Book Group. When Elizabeth retired in July of 2017 I initially left St. Mark’s with them but I was so thankful to be able to return a few months later – in large part because of the dear people who take turns picking me up for, and taking me home after, church on Sunday. In addition to my St. Mark’s involvement I volunteer for Drive-A-Senior by writing greeting cards for them. Snohomish was my birthplace. My father, O.D. Morse, was the Chief-of-Police in Snohomish. My mother, Maud, was a nurse who moved from Montreal (having grown up on Prince Edward Island) with my halfsister, Freda. In addition to my older sister Freda, I had a younger sister, Billie. Snohomish was then largely a farming community Northeast of Seattle. I grew up in the Episcopal Church—St. John’s. My mother was a devout Roman Catholic but when the local priest refused to marry her and my Methodist father, Mom vowed that her children would be raised in another church. Dad’s friends were Episcopalians and so it came to be! Soon after I married and had my first daughter, Julie, my then-husband and I moved to Tacoma, where our second daughter, Elizabeth, was born.

Most of my working career was in the fashion industry. I had my own dress shop, Beth’s Styles, while we lived in Tacoma. In 1963 we moved from Tacoma to Seattle. I sold the dress shop and began a twenty-four year career as Manager and Buyer of clothes and furs for Littler. During those years I traveled to markets in California and New York City. In 1979 I married an attorney, Archie Greenlee. After I stopped working in fashion I became a realtor. I also did purchasing for the Seattle Public Schools, for students in need of clothing. And I worked for SeaTac Airport, developing retail space for the airport. Archie suffered a massive heart attack (that he survived) while at a football game in Eastern Washington. Not long after, we moved from Seattle and back (for me) to Snohomish. I never thought I would live there again but absolutely fell in love with my birthplace. By then Snohomish had reinvented itself from primarily a farming community to an antique destination (even though Julie and Elizabeth dubbed it “You Pick.”). Once we moved to Snohomish I was, for a time, the Director of the food bank. I also had a shop in Snohomish and began work as an interior decorator. I had a full and fulfilling career but my primary love was always my two daughters. My oldest, Julie, earned her Master’s degree in Ireland in Anglo-Irish Studies with the intent of teaching High School Honors English. Instead, she found herself working as a counselor of 6th grade inner city children – whom she loved, and who loved her. She then became the Principal of the Seahawks Academy: an alternative High School for at-risk students. On September 11, 2001, Julie suffered a cerebral aneurysm. Although she survived, she died of complications on March 17, 2005. And of course, you know my youngest Elizabeth! I am incredibly thankful to have found a church home at St. Mark’s.
