St. Mark’s News Volume 23/Issue 1
From the Rector: A New Logo! There’s been an exciting project going on behind the scenes for a few months and I’m really excited to now be able to lift the veil: St. Mark’s has a new logo! And a new website coming right around the corner! *Trumpet sounds* Da da da naaaaaa! Here it is!
With the new logo, our desire was to update what we had according to the latest norms of graphic design, while also wanting to move towards something that was a little more uniquely “us.” To that end, two main graphic concepts informed the new design. 1.) The Lion, which is the traditional symbol for St. Mark, and has long been included as part of our logo; and 2.) The live oak tree, which we felt symbolically stood for what makes our congregation unique—the live oak is distinctly Austin, and distinctly our property. Notice that the lion’s mane is made up of live oak-inspired leaves! The live oak tree is also what informed our new color palette. How did we get this logo? Last fall I recruited a small subcommittee made up of parishioners, staff, and two top Austin designers (who offered their consultation pro bono) to help me explore the possibility of updating our graphic designs at St. Mark’s. After exploring a variety of options, we decided to sponsor a design contest on a web-based graphic design marketplace called 99 Designs, for which we were required to write an in-depth design brief about what makes us unique as a congregation, including uploading lots of pictures of our space and property. The contest ran for about three weeks, and in the end, we received over 500 submissions from graphic designers all over the world (literally). In the end we had lots of great options to choose from, which made it really difficult in the final stages, but we are thrilled with the result.

Where did the cross go? We tried really hard to include a cross in the new logo, so it would more obviously echo our old logo, but our professional design consultants strongly discouraged the use of a “multi-image design,” and after reviewing a variety of submissions that included a cross, we agreed with their assessment. Still, the Celtic cross will remain a distinct image in our common life, remaining above our altar and above our front doors. A new website? We’ve also been hard at work on a new website, and we hope to launch that by the end of this month. Be on the lookout! -

Family Ministry As you should know by now, I stepped away from the Director of Religious Education/Family Ministry post at St. Mark’s at the end of 2018. When I started in this position in October 2017, I wanted to do my part to keep St. Mark’s family traditions alive during our time of transition, and I gave it my best. Though the position is still transforming, I realized that I have largely completed what I set out to do, and it’s time for me pursue some of my personal passions. I have greatly enjoyed this ministry, I have so many happy recollections, and, like you, I look forward to witnessing how this ministry unfolds. This newsletter article reflects one of my last official duties as DRE, and I’d like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for your support and your friendship during the last fifteen months. From Christmas pageants to the Easter Egg hunt to VBS and everything in between, I could not have done this work without your help and encouragement along the way! Thank you, all!
Every Sunday in January – 9am & 11am: Children’s Chapel/Godly Play Every Sunday we offer Children’s Chapel at both the 9am and 11am services. Children begin the service in the Sanctuary with their parents. After the opening Collect, the priest invites the children to gather behind the Children’s Chapel Crucifer to process out to their Chapel. They rejoin their parents after the Peace for Communion. Here are the stories we will encounter for the remainder of January: January 20: Parable of the Good Shepherd – We hear Jesus’ story of the shepherd who searches for the one sheep that is lost. We hear how the shepherd would go anywhere to look for his sheep – even into places of danger, and how happy he is when all the sheep are safe inside the sheepfold. January 27: Parable of the Good Samaritan – In this story, we hear Jesus’ response to the lawyer’s question about the greatest commandment: “Who is my neighbor?” Children’s Chapel/Godly Play will continue in February with the help of our wonderful volunteers! Opportunity alert:
Volunteer (adult/youth) to help set up before the 9 a.m. Chapel or put things away after the 11 a.m. Volunteer (adult) to be the Children’s Crucifer/Doorkeeper (requires SGC certification); youth are also eligible to volunteer as Crucifer. If you enjoy telling stories, volunteer (adult) as Storyteller (requires SGC and Godly Play training).
Every Sunday in January – 10am, Outside Deck: Family Taco Hour. Taco Hour continues as usual on the outside deck, weather permitting. As always, grab some tacos to enjoy with your family, then hang out with other families on the deck or attend an adult formation class, as you choose. You can relax as your kids enjoy supervised play on the playground (the whole shebang moves indoors in case of inclement weather). Opportunity alert: Volunteer to set up the taco table and or clean up afterwards. Volunteer (adult*) to help monitor the playground once a month or so. *Requires SGC certification. Contact Fr. Zac at zac@stmarksaustin.org. Additional Opportunity: Nursery – Volunteer (adult) substitutes (requires SGC certification); Sundays, 8:45am until 12:15pm; 1- or 2-hour shifts available.

Meet the Vestry Candidates The Annual Parish Meeting will be Sunday, January 20, at 10 a.m. One of the purposes of the meeting is to vote on new Vestry members and to honor outgoing members for their dedication to the Vestry.
Cecily Bennett My religious tradition/background is somewhat ecliptic, beginning as a Lutheran from the time I was a twinkle in my Daddy’s eye. When I married, my husband was already serving as a Deacon in the Disciples of Christ (Christian Church) in Uvalde, TX, so I joined him there. Later, our family followed him to the Presbyterian tradition. After my husband’s passing, I joined my oldest son and his family in the Methodist church. The new Rector of St. Philip’s Episcopal became a fast friend and mentor, and I soon found myself attending confirmation class (again, for the fourth time) but I moved to Austin before the Bishop’s annual visit. So, I repeated confirmation with Mother Elizabeth (that made five times, for those who are counting). After living the majority of my life in Uvalde County (west of San Antonio), daily rubbing elbows with farmers, ranchers and others who provide services to support agriculture in the Winter Garden area, I packed my bags and moved to Austin in 2014. Recently widowed, the selling of our business completed, all four children (three boys and one princess) finally becoming adults and building their own families, it was the right time for me to begin a new adventure. I initially attended many Austin churches (from the denomination choices list above) but the morning I stepped into St. Mark’s, I knew I was home. Since joining St. Mark’s, I have helped with the financial deposit committee and I have recently completed the Safeguarding God’s Children Certification to be able to resume helping with the youth. I am mid-year in “Year Three” for the Education for Ministry program, meeting every Thursday evening with some very special, dear friends. My children (and their spouses) have blessed me with thirteen grandchildren, with number fourteen due to make his arrival on January 16th. To quote one of my saintly teachers, “We are blessed.” I am humbled to have been nominated for the Vestry and consider it an honor. I look forward to serving our Lord and my brothers and sisters at St. Mark’s in this exciting time for our church.
Jim Clark I became a member of St. Mark's in 1986. Prior to that time, my wife, Marty and I had been Presbyterians and sometimes Nowherians. One day Marty said that whenever I was ready to start going back to church she was ready. The next Sunday we attended St. Mark's and the rest is history. While here I have served as an usher, a Vestry member, junior and senior warden, and served on several committees. Being a member of St. Mark's has really one of the best experiences of my ninety-one years. Prior to my retirement I worked as a teacher, a principal, a school psychologist and for the last twenty-one years before retirement, with the Texas Education Agency. If approved for membership on the Vestry I will do my best to help us to continue to be a welcoming place and to do all we can to become a true spiritual home for each of us. I know that God is everywhere, but at least for me, God's headquarters is at 2128 Barton Hills Drive.

January and February 2019 Michael Meigs* Michael Meigs and Karen Milton joined St. Mark’s in 2007, they have served in various missions of the church. Michael served one three-year term on the vestry, coordinated the 2017 rector search committee, serves as a lector, and is secretary to the men’s scholarship committee. He has drawn on experience as a literary translator, interpreter from French and Spanish, and U.S. diplomat to present at Sunday morning discussions. *Michael will be serving two years on the Vestry, to fill a vacated spot.
Jennifer Doran Shaw I am honored to be nominated for the St. Mark’s Vestry, just as I was honored to serve on the Search Committee that brought us Father Zac! I’m a native Texan and cradle Episcopalian. I grew up in the Diocese of Oklahoma and moved to Austin in middle school, at which time our family landed at St. Mark’s for one year. Ten years later in 1999, I returned to St. Mark’s as a newlywed. Over the years I’ve served on Altar Guild, been involved with the Storybook Project, taught VBS, sat in on many Choristers rehearsals, and most recently became a Depositor. My daughters, Meredith (13) and Sloane (9), sing with the Youth Ensemble and Choristers respectively and serve as acolytes. My husband, Reed, plays drums with the choirs on occasion. I have a B.A. in Government from UT-Austin and worked as a family law paralegal before taking time off to raise a family. For over 10 years, I’ve been a board member and Legislative Coordinator for Texans for Midwifery (and now in the process of passing the torch). For 5+ years, I’ve worked in various capacities at Cedars Montessori School where I’m currently the Upper Elementary Assistant. When possible, I enjoy yoga, cooking, and reading a good book.
Christie Stockstill I am a photographic artist specializing in creative portraiture and fine art photography. I've been working as a portrait photographer since I stopped teaching high school in 2008. I am married to a very understanding man, who often finds himself in front of my camera; and we have two sons, who, not always as willingly, find themselves there. I have been an Episcopalian from the age of eight, when my Southern Baptist mother married my Catholic step-father (and except for that time I experimented with Catholicism in college). Adam and I began attending St. Mark’s in 2005 after our first son, Xander, was born. Now our younger boy is serving as an acolyte. I am a lector some Sundays and am proud to have recently served on the Search Committee to find our new rector. It’s an exciting time to be part of the growth of our church.

Parishioner Highlights When I originally asked Darlene to do this article I made a statement about the Goodnight family and how fascinating her family’s history must have been as Austin was becoming established. Her reply was that this article was going to contain family information but it would concentrate on her relationship to and with St. Mark’s. And indeed it does not disappoint related to that. So we have here another very unique individual that through friends was introduced, fell in love with St. Mark’s and the rest is history. Darlene for ALL you do for St. Mark’s and the manner in which you do it we appreciate you and thank you!
- Beth Chenoweth
Norva Darlene “Pruitt” Goodnight Born in Dallas, Texas, to Alvin and Aileen Pruitt, and sister Patricia Ann (age 9) in 1948. We traveled with my father’s company from Dallas to San Antonio, back to Dallas and finally to Austin, Texas when I was 12 (I think). I graduated from Travis High School in 1966 and gave up going to college at LSU to marry Charles Merle Goodnight Jr. I had chosen LSU as we were leaving Austin as soon as I graduated to move to New Orleans. Again a work related move. So Boomer (nickname) and I married in 1966 in New Orleans and worked side by side at our restaurant, Hill’s Café, here in Austin until 1989. Boomer’s health was declining at that time. We had three sons: Damon (1968), Pruitt (1972), and Boomer W. (1974). Damon is married to Tammi and has 2 daughters: Morgan & Kennedy. Pruitt is married to Theresa and they have 2 children, Cierra and Chance. Boomer W. has lived with me since before his father’s death. He was a great help during those last months of Boomer’s demise and my salvation.
I had 44 glorious years with my soul mate. We had begun our marriage as members of St. John’s Presbyterian Church but were disenchanted by politics and hypocrisy of those seeking power. I began looking for a solution in selection. My friend Sandy Sterzing and Debbie Thornal had been Episcopalians and urged me to join them. After Boomer’s death in 2010, I finally was free as a caregiver and could pursue looking for the special parishioners that I wished to pray with. I knew the minute I walked through the doors at St. Mark’s that I was “home.” I knew I could worship here with real people that truly nurture one another. Christian love and devotion at St. Mark’s took the anger from my heart and gave my life purpose. I continue to feel sincerity, dedication, and unconditional love from my St. Mark’s family. I truly believe God guided me, and my friends, and I remain a dutiful daughter. I love being one of the Martha’s, an usher (because I love greeting my family with hugs & kisses), a part of an Altar Guild Team, member of Daughters of the King, and an active member of the Women of St. Mark’s. I am a pretty good country cook. I always have some kind of art project going on which includes painting or refinishing wood projects. I chose a picture with my “Miss Emily” Goodnight. She is my 115lb. buddy and light of my life. Her personality is much like a teenager’s whose is filled with devotion, surprises and expression. She was meant for me but that is another story I will share later. Sincerest Love and Blessings to my entire St. Mark’s family, and a Happy New Year!
