ST. MARK’S NEWS • VOLUME 23 • ISSUE 3 • MAY 2019

From the Rector Dear St. Mark’s family, I’m carrying with me so many sweet memories of my first Holy Week with you. Our Palm Sunday procession was gorgeous. And I’ve never participated in a marching “Glory Laud and Honor” that managed to stay in rhythm all the way into the church! Impressive, people. The rearranged furniture of Grace Chapel was meant to provide an initial shock to the system at our Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday Eucharists. Being in a different-but-familiar space was meant to wake us up into acknowledging that in Holy Week we inhabit a different-yet-familiar kind of time. Carol Oppel offered a series of three lovely, tone-setting homilies. On Thursday, Cecilia invited us into the Triduum proper and before leaving we all, together as one family, tenderly, somberly prepared ourselves for Good Friday by stripping the altar. The blowing out of the hanging candle—symbolizing that Christ’s presence now mysteriously eludes us; no consecrated bread or wine remain on the premises—was a particularly touching moment for me. On Good Friday, we marched with the cross and with one another, nostrils filled with the aromas of fresh cedar (thank you meditation trail clean-up crew!), taking turns station-to-station embodying the interdependence that always exists in the body of Christ. Our children discovered Easter eggs at each station—filled not with candy but with symbols of Christ’s cross-laden journey: Band-Aids, rosaries, nails, shrouds, and small crosses. At the Good Friday liturgy we prayed earnestly for our desperate, hope-hungry world. Then, of course, the Great Vigil of Easter: What a night! What an overwhelming crowd! Oh, choir, you brought me to tears. Oh, sweet little baptized children, how beautiful you were to behold! Oh, you petrified pew-sitters, eyes pried open in fear watching your rector approach with a baptism-soaked rosemary branch! Some may say I got carried away with the Easter Proclamation but I say unto you, YOU CANNOT BE TOO EXCITED ABOUT THE RESURRECTION! To share that night with you filled my heart to the brim. Those with eyes to see will have noticed the debut appearance of our new set of Easter-white altar vestments, purchased with St. Mark’s memorial funds, dedicated to the glory of God in the memory of Bob Peterek. Easter morning, as ever, was a holy chaos ear-to-ear grins and unadulterated grace. If Lent was about preparing our hearts and minds to renew our baptismal vows at the Vigil, this Easter season at St. Mark’s is about being raised out of those baptismal waters yet again to be embraced yet again by one’s community of faith. Our leadership team was overwhelmed by the number of you that signed up to join an Easter Home Group, and my prayer is that many new and deep Christian friendships are formed as you enjoy the more intimate fellowship made possible by our gracious hosts and small group leaders. My challenge to you is to be bold and courageous in these groups. Dare to share your real self, your real story, your real struggles, with one another. Dare to be known, really, by those you worship beside week after week. As you share your stories with one another, dare to ask follow-up questions. Notice the bravery in vulnerability of those

Youth Lectors Wrap Up Program Year The Youth Lectors wrapped up their program year on Palm Sunday, when they read the Passion Gospel with the help of other readers. All the kids who participated in the program did a wonderful job throughout the year. We’d like to recognize them: Mairin Bachschmid, Sofia Mickler, Meredith Shaw, Henry Janes, Nora Kelly, Will Kelly, and Ryan Dempsey. A special thank you goes to Claudia Janes who served as a reader and also coordinated the program! Claudia took over in August 2018 from long-time coordinator Nancy Kibler. On that note, the Youth Lector program is in need of a coordinator for the 2019 – 2020 program year! Claudia will be heading to college in August. Youth lectors read one or two Sundays a month at the 9 o’clock service during the school year, and the coordinator schedules and coaches the readers. In addition, youth lectors narrate the Christmas pageant and read the Passion Gospel on Palm Sunday. If you are interested in Some of the youth lectors practice coordinating this ministry, please contact the church office, before the service: Sofia Mickler office@stmarksaustin.org. Sign up in the Parish Hall ASAP, or contact Mike Brode (see below). Become part of the fishing tradition here at St. Mark’s! Departing right after the 10:00 a.m. summer service on June 23. Fishing commences on Monday morning. Once we have a total headcount, the price for fishing will be determined. A tip for the fishing crew will be gathered on the boat on the way back in (bring some cash on the excursion). Accommodations: Hotel accommodations are based on double occupancy. Formation Classes Formation Series at 10 a.m.: Mystagogy: The Christian Mysteries, led by Nathan Jennings. In the ancient church, the bishop taught the newly baptized the nature of the liturgy and sacraments in Eastertide. This Eastertide we will focus on what is liturgy and why do we do it? Let’s explore this together this Easter. The following book, available on Amazon, may be helpful: Lectures on the Christian Sacraments:The Procatechesis and the Five Mystagogical Catecheses by St. Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem. Rector's Youth Bible Study, starting May 12, 10 a.m.: All youth group-aged students are invited to join Fr. Zac on Sundays during the Formation Hour (10:00 a.m.) for Bible Study in the Bennett Classroom. We'll read through the book of Jonah.

Newsletter Gratitude About eight years ago, parishioner Becky Janes stepped (coerced perhaps?) into the volunteer role of Newsletter editor. During these eight years, she has moved from working part-time to full-time, and she’s and Rich have been raising their children, Claudia, a graduating senior, and Henry, finishing 7th grade. Each month, she sorts through the flotsam and jetsam of articles that drop into her mailbox, and the end result is a beautiful, well organized newsletter, full of the life that is St. Mark’s. This edition of the newsletter will be her last as editor. Becky’s patience, kindness, creativity, and calmness has been the balance to my behind-thescenes panic of compiling the articles in hopes that nothing was missed, particularly these last two years. With much gratitude, a huge Thank You to Becky for her time given to this ministry! With a grateful heart,

Joanne Foote, St. Mark’s Parish Administrator

Outreach Storybook Project in the news St. Mark’s parishioner, Judith Dullnig, the founder of the Women's Storybook Project of Texas, was one of the recent recipients of the KVUE Five Who Care Award. Women’s Storybook Project (WSP) of Texas helps incarcerated mothers do what moms have always done to comfort and nurture their children—read them bedtime stories, using their own voices to love, reassure, and encourage them from miles away. WSP volunteers visit women’s prisons in Central and East Texas once a month to record mothers reading books aloud to their children. We then mail the books and CD recordings to the children, who live all over the United States. "The idea of these children being disconnected from their moms," Dullnig said. "It just seemed like a simple idea with a big impact." Dullnig started this organization on her own to bring children their mother's voice. The project has been going for 15 years, and Dullnig has been working those 15 years without pay. “This project helps the mother, the child and the Winners of the KVUE Five Who Care and Five Kids Who Care Awards. prison.” Judith Dullnig is on the front row, third from the right. May 2019 Shower Ministry Supports Trinity Center at Barbara Jordan Celebration Fundraiser On April 24, eight Shower Ministry volunteers from St. Mark’s joined other Trinity Center supporters at the annual Barbara Jordan Celebration Fundraiser, held at St. David's Episcopal Church. During the event, The Shower Ministry donated to the Trinity Center, as a way to pay forward the generous donation given to our ministry by the National ECW Board at the Triennial last year. The celebration also marked the Trinity Center's 20th year in operation. It was an evening of food, drink and fellowship as we watched a slide show about neighbors who come to the St. Mark’s Shower Ministry volunteers attend Trinity Center, as well as demonstrating available services Trinity Center Fundraiser. (several Shower Ministry pictures were included). One neighbor, David Shumaker, gave his testimony about how the Trinity Center helped him get his life back on track. David is well known to the Shower Ministry volunteers because he always helps us by bringing a cart to the front door, so we don’t have to lug our heavy supplies to the basement, and then he or one of his employees is there to help us get the wet towels to our car at the end of our shift. David's journey with the Trinity Center began when someone invited him to Arts From The Streets. It was there that David felt a spirit of friendliness and acceptance and then began going to the Trinity Center regularly. Six of David's art pieces were available for purchase at the fundraiser, and all six pieces sold for $500 each.

Shower Ministry Coordinator Pat Bullock and fundraiser attendee David Shumaker.

We are so thankful for the Trinity Center volunteers attend Trinity Trinity Center and its 20 Center Fundraiser (left, Donna Bridges). years of providing assistance to our homeless neighbors. We are also thankful for the privilege of being able to provide homeless women in Austin a safe place to shower.

A Note of Thanks from the Shower Ministry Recent loving support from our shower angels - Beth Chenoweth donated a picture as a silent auction item, and the lucky winner was Jonea Raney! Thank you! On Sunday, April 28, Denise Grosch made a donation of 5 bags of items she had purchased, including underwear, sports bras, and socks. To these two, and to all of you who support us, we say thank you! Pat Bullock, Shower Ministry Coordinator

Summer Schedule Begins May 26: Memorial Day Weekend St. Mark’s moves to our summer schedule beginning Memorial Day weekend. Sunday services will be at 8 & 10 a.m., through Labor Day weekend. See you in church!

News from the Lion’s Pride: St. Mark’s Day School April has brought us warmer weather, rain, beautiful bluebonnets and the sound of children’s voices on the playground. With the school year almost over we are planning for the next school and all that brings. Currently our enrollment for the 2019-2020 school year is 100% full and for that we are so grateful. Grateful for the families that entrust their children to our care and nurture, which in turn causes us to be grateful to you the church body for your support of this ministry. Our last day of school will be May 17, this is also the day that we graduate our Pre-K children to move on to the next place in their educational journey. This is always an emotional time for parents and for teachers as we say goodbye, however knowing we have prepared children for their next place is our reward. Summer camp begins on June 10 and goes until July 26, this year we are taking a journey across the United States as we travel “On the Road Again.” The children will learn about all parts of our country. This has been a year of change and growth for the Day School, none of which would be possible without the steadfast support of our families, teachers, Board of Directors, Father Zac, and the Parish; for these things we give thanks.

Karon Hammond, Head of School

Our New Curate, the Rev. Mary Keenan, Starts July 1 Mary joins us from St. Matthew's, Austin, where she has been serving as part-time assisting clergy over the last year. She knows Austin well. For many years, she was an active member of St. David’s, and it was there where she discovered a community that helped her discern a call to ordained ministry. With an MDiv from Yale Divinity School already under her belt, she completed a year of Anglican Studies at Seminary of the Southwest and began her ordained ministry in 2018. Mary has a son, Asher, about to begin college at UT, and a daughter, Maggie, in middle school. You can check out some of her writing on her blog maryology.com.

Parishioner Highlights The Raines family has been with us for about 5 years. Their daughter’s enrollment in our Day School was instrumental in their introduction to St. Mark’s and their continued involvement in our church. When I asked Abby if we could speak to their family in a Highlights article she not only agreed but had the document to me within 48 hours which told me a lot about her although we had not yet met. Abby wrote this article so I have left it exactly as she spoke about her family and their involvement in St. Mark’s. We thank them for that involvement and appreciate what they do with and for St. Mark’s.

Beth Chenoweth

Abby and Stephen Raines and family Stephen and Abby, Quincy Claire (7), Winston (3), and Zachary (6 months) came to Austin, and then 3

years ago we moved our family to the wide open spaces of Dripping Springs. We came to the church after our daughter started in the 2 year old class at the Day School; 5 years ago. Abby has served as a School Board Co-Chair and the leader of the Families with Young Children. Stephen sings in the Choir and has served on the Outreach Committee. He also from time to time is a Lector. Quincy is in the choristers and enjoys Godly Play on Sunday morning. Since we married in 2006, we have only lived in Texas. Prior to this, Stephen has lived in Wyoming, Oklahoma, Missouri, Virginia, Washington DC and Texas. Abby is a native Texan and has only been outside the state for educational stints. Stephen is a Vice President of Government Affairs for The Texas Health Services Authority, a public/private partnership on health information exchange. Abby is an attorney. Stephen and Abby enjoy diving together. Abby is an active member of The Junior League of Austin and the incoming Treasurer of this organization. Stephen is a member of the Knights of the Symphony. Quincy Claire rides her horse and enjoys singing. Winston is in to any sport with a ball! Zachary is still working on not drooling, learning to roll over, and has a life goal of sleeping through the night! đ&#x;˜Š

Seen Around St. Mark’s

St. Mark’s parishioners Luke Thiessen and Matthew Awitan were invited to play with the Austin ISD All-City Jazz Band in April. Both young men regularly accompany the St. Mark's Choir. Congratulations!

The 9 o'clock service on Easter Sunday was well attended by the children of St. Mark's. They enjoyed flowering the cross.

St. Mark’s held an Easter Vigil on Saturday, April 20. The Easter Vigil begins outside with the lighting of the new fire, which represents the “victory of Christ in light and life over darkness and death.” The new fire is used to light the Paschal Candle, which is used throughout Easter and then on special occasions.
