ST. MARK’S NEWS • VOLUME 23 • ISSUE 2 • MARCH/APRIL 2019
From the Rector Mark your calendars for 8 p.m. Saturday, April 20, because St. Mark’s is having an Easter vigil this year! Let me tell you why I’m so excited about it. In the early church, it was traditional to do baptisms only once per year—at the Easter vigil. The season of Lent therefore was a time of preparation for this momentous occasion. All those people—hundreds of them, thousands even—who over the course of the previous year had become interested being followers of Jesus would all gather in the dark, the night before Easter morning, and by candlelight to listen to the leaders of the church tell the story of God from the very beginning, starting with readings from Genesis, through Israel’s deliverance from slavery in the Exodus, through exile in Babylon and return, all the way to the coming of Jesus. They read all through the night. Then, they would exit the church and gather at the nearby river, where a cross-shaped baptistry was built into the ground. The new converts would together look into the west (where the sky was the darkest) and renounce Satan and all forces of evil. Then they would turn around and look into the east, where the morning sun was just peaking over the horizon, and they would promise to trust in Jesus Christ as their Savior. Each candidate for baptism would then strip off their clothes, they would walk down one arm of the cross into the river, they would be baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Spirit, and they would be raised back up the other side, In this Issue and wrapped in a giant white cloak—a symbol of their new birth and From the Rector ......................... 1 new life in Christ. After all were baptized, they would go back into the Lent at St. Mark’s ...................... 2 church to participate in—for the first time ever—the sacred mysteries of Holy Week and Easter ............... 3 bread and wine. The spirit of this Easter vigil carries through to today. Ever since, it has been an occasion of welcoming new converts into the life of the church through baptism, and thereby an occasion for the rest of the church to renew their own baptismal covenant. Lent continues to be, for us, a season of preparation, looking ahead recommitting ourselves yet again to Christ.

We have designed the formation opportunities for the season of Lent at St. Mark’s to fall in line with this logic of the early church. Our Sunday formation hour class, taught by Nathan Jennings and myself, will be mirroring the ancient catechism the early church used for baptism prep in the season of Lent. During our Wednesday night services, I will give a short (!) homily each week devoted to a different phrase of the Apostles’ Creed (the creed used for baptisms). Lastly, for your own individual formation, we invite the whole parish to read with us through an excellent little book by Ben Myers, called The Apostles Creed: A Guide to the Ancient Catechism, which is available on Amazon for $13, or in the Parish Hall for $15. I invite you each to the observance of a holy and life-giving Lent! And I invite you each with enthusiasm to our Easter vigil! - Fr. Zac

March/April 2019 Lenten Quiet Day: Saturday, March 9, and DOK News The Daughters of the King (DOK) is hosting a Lenten Quiet day on March 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Grace Chapel and the Parish Hall. All are invited! Breakfast snacks and lunch are provided at no cost. This is a good time for a spiritual reset for the season and an opportunity to try different modes of meditation and prayer. There will be time for both guided meditations and personal prayer. Eucharist will be available. If you are interested but need more information, please feel free to contact Heather Azarmehr at azarmehr@sbcglobal.net. For newcomers, Daughters of the King is a service organization that specializes in intercessory prayer for members, families and friends of the congregation. If you have someone that you wish to be remembered for illness, time of life struggle or other challenges, you can contact Heather Azarmehr or the St. Mark's office (office@stmarksaustin.org) to submit prayer request details. Information is kept confidential, and the general congregation contributes to this prayer every Sunday during the intercessions. For St. Mark's members who are interested in joining, we are organizing a new member training. Contact Heather Azarmehr (email listed above) to discuss details and what is required. In the works: Some members of the DOK will be taking on the additional responsibility for a lay ministry to take Eucharist to our members who are ill or shut in and cannot make it to mass on Sunday. This is a lovely way to tend to and keep up with all our community members.
Contemplative Prayer Group Need some respite from our busy world? Looking for that just-right Lenten discipline? Why not try contemplative prayer? The St. Mark’s Contemplative Prayer Group meets in Grace Chapel each Saturday morning at 8:15 a.m., year round. We begin with a short, modified version of Morning Prayer, followed by 15-20 minutes sitting quietly listening for God’s voice in our lives. The prayer service is one that includes collects for the upcoming Sunday and any saints’ day being observed, a psalm, a Gospel reading, and an intercessory prayer drawn from both the Book of Common Prayer and the New Zealand Book of Common Prayer. Before we contemplate, our current group enjoys sharing the latest news of our lives and afterwards, some of us meet for breakfast afterwards. Your presence would enrich us.

Music Notes: The Great Vigil of Easter St. Mark’s will celebrate The Great Vigil of Easter at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 20. This will be a stunning liturgy of choral music, hymns, scripture, and prayers. We invite you to join us for this special service! From earliest times Christians have gathered through the night of Easter to recall the story of God’s saving work, from creation through to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. However, the Easter Liturgy is not merely a presentation of God’s work. It is meant to be a real experience of new life for the worshipper, a passing from darkness to light which offers hope to all the faithful. The Easter Vigil marks the end of the emptiness of Holy Saturday, and leads into the celebration of Christ’s resurrection. The singing of the Exsultet, the ancient hymn of triumph and rejoicing, links this night of our Christian redemption to the Passover night of Israel’s redemption out of Egypt. Christian baptism is a participation in the death and resurrection of Christ, a dying to sin in order to be reborn in him, and the Easter Vigil was from early Christian times a preferred occasion for baptism. The Easter Gospel is proclaimed with joy and splendor. Music, flowers, bells, and colors are used to celebrate Christ’s resurrection. The ‘Alleluia’, which has been silent throughout Lent, returns. The earliest Christian observance of Easter consisted of a vigil of watching and waiting, fasting and prayer, that lasted through the hours of darkness. Because the vigil began after evening prayer when, as every night, the evening candle was lit, in the Western Church on this particular night this light ceremony was eventually understood as symbolizing the return of the light of Christ and the beginning of the Easter celebration. The service begins with the lighting of a small fire by which the story of salvation is read. This narrative of salvation is told through Old Testament readings. Each reading adds to the story and a sense of expectation gradually increases until the service reaches its climax in the revelation of the resurrection. Choir anthems follow each reading to reflect upon what has been heard. After the saving acts of God are recounted from the Old Testament, the church is brilliantly lit and all the splendor of Eastertide is revealed. Easter hymns resound and the ‘Alleluia’ is restored. The culmination of the service is the Eucharist, when we are sacramentally reunited with the risen Christ. Plan to join us for what promises to be a profound spiritual experience! Now the queen of seasons, bright with the day of splendor, with the royal feast of feasts, comes its joy to render! St. John of Damascus (c. 675-749) Adapted from the website of The Church of England: https://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-and-worship/worship-texts-and-resources/common-worship/churchsyear/times-and-seasons/easter-liturgy Much of what we know about early Christian traditions for Holy Week and the Vigil comes from letters written by the Spanish nun Egeria in the 4th century. Egeria traveled on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and sent back detailed descriptions of her experiences. Her accounts of the Holy Week liturgies in Jerusalem helped to establish liturgical patterns that remain with us today. Day School News What a joyous day we had at St. Mark’s first ever Day School Sunday on January 27th. The 9:00 a.m. service was overflowing with so much joy and voice. How wonderful to have so many of the families in attendance, including alumni of St. Mark’s Day School program. Being able to share our weekly Chapel experience with everyone was truly a blessing. Registration for the 2019-2020 School year is in full swing and we look forward to a full house for the upcoming school year. Summer camp will be held for 7 weeks starting on June 10 and concluding on July 26. Camp is for children who are two years old or have just finished Pre-K. The Lion’s Pride event on March 2 is one of the school’s two fundraisers. This year the event is being held at the High Road on Dawson Road. The money raised from the event goes back into school to provide for scholarships and improvements to the program. Thank you again to the congregation of St. Mark’s for the love and support you provide to the Day School, as always we are grateful for your support.
Vera Gang Scholarship Applications Due March 31 From https://www.epicenter.org/ecw-vera-gang-scott-scholarship/ Women in good standing at their churches, and who are seeking certification or higher education at recognized institutions, are eligible to apply for the Vera Gang Scott Scholarship from Episcopal Church Women. The Vera Gang Scholarship Fund was started in 1972 by the ECW Board of the Diocese of Texas with a gift - her life's savings - from Vera Gang Scott. In the 1920's Ms. Scott received aid for her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the women of Trinity Episcopal Church in Galveston. She kept careful track of all the money she received. After starting work as a social worker, she repaid every cent, and that money became the seed for the Vera Gang Scott Scholarship Fund. Ms. Scott's dream was to help others just as she had been helped. Although she lived in many states, Ms. Scott always considered herself a Texan. She led an active life as an educator and continued to be involved in service to others. Vera Gang Scott was very proud that a school was named after her in Colorado Springs. The scholarship eligibility requirements are: (1) A female communicant in good standing, (2) Acceptance or enrollment in an academic institution of college rank, (3) Pursuing professional certification or a degree from an accredited institution, and (4) Ability to show real financial need. To apply, go to https://28f7fb3fa1a43717a53bcb342165bfeaa4f2927aec8e5d7de41f.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com/uploaded/e/0e8245210_1547419385_ecwvera-gang-scott-scholarship-application.pdf.

Parishioner Highlights When I first approached the Dullnigs about featuring them in a Parishioner Highlights article, they as so many St. Mark’s parishioners said, “Why us?” They stated that they found it hard to write about themselves and that they were “kind of quiet” people. They are indeed the epitome of what so many of our St. Mark’s parishioners are about: reserved, quiet, great sense of humor, and always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. And as we all know Judith’s work with the establishment of the “Women’s Storybook Project” is history in the making! Beth Chenoweth
Judith and Jon Dullnig Judith and Jon shared that they have been involved at St. Mark’s for some years, first attending when Bill Bennett was the rector. They have a son, Austin, who is a musician and resides in San Antonio and a daughter, Hadley, who is an architect, living in Charlotte, NC. The Dullnig’s have been active with El Buen and their interest is outreach. Jon has participated with Habitat for Humanity and they are both eagerly involved with the Angel Tree and Thanksgiving Projects for El Buen. Judith founded Women’s Storybook Project in 2003 through St. Mark’s Outreach Program. She’s very grateful for the support from the Outreach Program, Bill Bennett, Elizabeth Turner and Andrea Mitchell. Liz Davis has been a supporter for many years as well as a leader for the Women’s Story Book Project and Laurie Mayor is currently educating parishioners about the project. Their support helped
the program grow from serving one Texas female prison to its current size of serving nine Texas female prisons. Jon is also a Team Leader at the Central Texas Food Bank. They both graduated from UT Austin and Jon then served as a Naval Officer, providing them with the opportunity to travel. Immediately after their marriage Jon’s ship was traversing the Mediterranean and so Judith traveled from port to port (Naples, Malta & Barcelona) following his ship for a contiguous honeymoon! They then lived in Aruba. They still enjoy traveling. Their most recent trip was to Australia and New Zealand. After they both received graduate degrees from the University of Michigan, they resided in Chicago, New York and Atlanta. As Judith says, “I married a Texan, and they often return to Texas.” They’ve lived in Austin since 1994 and as many Texans also escape the summer heat by living in their Maine home. Summer brings time for some of their favorite hobbies: sailing, going to Maine, gardening and cooking. They attend the early service and are on the team of ushers. Their quote is, “We’ve loved the years we’ve spent at St. Mark’s.” And we indeed have loved having them as an integral part of our membership!
