The Brockville Arts Centre was filled with national and community pride. Canada 150 medals commissioned by MP Gord Brown and MPP Steve Clark were presented during a special ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 11. The Leeds and Grenville area awards program was announced this spring. Most of the 152 medal recipients were nominated from the community; each of the 13 municipalities in the area selected an honouree. Brown noted that the federal government, "for some reason," did not commission a commemorative medal program to mark Canada 150 as had been the case with the Centennial in 1967 and the 125th in 1992. In recalling when he and Clark discussed the subject of medals earlier this year, Brown commented that "it only took us about a minute" to decide to move forward with a local recognition program. The stories of the Canada 150 medal recipients are heart-warming and inspiring, according to the MP. From community project and charity fundraisers and local historians to people who help senior citizens and others in time of need or students who want to improve the world in which they live, the recipients represent a range of interests and come from every section of the United Counties area. Clark observed that he and Brown enjoy seeing firsthand the selfless dedication of the volunteers and community builders. Their decision to give their time and talents makes the region much stronger, according to the MPP. The event began when dignitaries and medal recipients were led into the arts centre auditorium by piper Stewart Nimmo, who also received a medal. Another medal Tim Ruhnke/Metroland recipient, A.J. Benoit, led the gathering in the singing of O MP Gord Brown stands at the Brockvile Arts Centre podium as MPP Steve Clark applauds Canada. The event was emceed by Bruce Wylie, who also during the Canada 150 medals ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 11. It took the elected ofreceived a medal. See MEDALS page 2

ficials about a minute to decide earlier this year to commission the local medals to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation, Brown noted.

Rotary Fall Food Drive collects more items than last year ‘s campaign The Rotary Clubs of Brockville continue to encourage the public to donate to the Brockville and Area Food Bank. The Rotarians' Fall Food Drive took place last week. Food that was collected as part of the campaign

was unloaded at the food bank (also known as Operation Harvest Sharing) on Buell Street on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 10. The 2017 fall drive collected 20,320 lbs. of food. The goal was 26,000, although this year's total is higher than

the 16,316 lbs. collected by Rotarians in 2016. This year's campaign had also raised $17,000 in cash donations as of Oct. 10. Contributions can still be dropped off at or mailed to the food bank; online donatons to the Brock-

ternoon. The fall drive goal of 26,000 lbs. represents a three-month supply of food when combined with the cash donation goal of $35,000. Other elementary and secondary schools took part in the Rotary campaign. Many retailers participated by serving as collection sites and/or selling pre-packaged grocery bags. The Kriska trailer was parked in the Canadian Tire lot; non-perishable items were collected and sorted there. The food bank serves more than 1,360 individuals – 40 per cent of whom are children – each month.

Margaret Mathers shines quietly in education and community Margaret Mathers is much more than a retired teacher. She is a mother and a valued volunteer for many Gananoque organizations, but for the Retired Women Teachers of Ontario (RWTO), Gananoque branch, Margaret has been the historian, archivist and keeper of the photo albums for the group for more than 26 years. When Margaret Avery was a child, she often thought about being a teacher. Growing up in the village of Phillipsville, she attended Lockwood School, located between Phillipsville and Elgin. By the time she was 19 years old, she had accepted a teaching job in South Burgess School, S.S. No. 22, located on Old Kingston Road, off Highway 15 and east of Portland. It was a one-room school with grades 1 to 8, with 12 students; eight boys and four girls. After taking a bit of time off to get married and start a family, Margaret changed schools, to go to St. Mary St School in Picton, then to Glenview School between Perth and Smiths Falls. She finished her career with 29 years at Linklater Public School in Gananoque, retiring in 1990. Margaret knew about the group of retired women teachers who met regularly in her area. Some had been her friends and colleagues in recent years. This same area, encompassing Westport, Elgin, Portland, Delta, Lyndhurst, Seeley’s Bay, Lansdowne, and Gananoque, was organized in 1978 to become the first RWTO, then called the Ontario Association of Superannuated Women Teachers (OASWT). It was only natural that Margaret would quickly become a member of a group dedicated to improving the welfare of retired women teachers. She joined in 1991. During the 1990s, membership grew to more than 50 members, but age and illness have reduced the membership significantly. Not one who was prepared to sit back and take things easy, Margaret soon filled her hours with collecting photos, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia to begin the scrapbooks which now contain the history of the Retired Women Teachers of Ontario, Gananoque Branch. Newsletters, greeting cards, records of achievements and obituaries, all shine a light on the life of the many retired women teachers in the Gananoque branch. Ever the collector and lover of history, Margaret has photos, complete with names, of all her classes, more than 1,100 students.

Margaret Mathers

She finds newspaper clippings to keep track of former students — marriages, births, and deaths — and fellow teachers from days gone by. Although now faced with mobility issues, Margaret continues to attend gatherings and contribute her wonderfully positive approach to life with all she meets. She truly exemplifies the “Caring and Sharing” mission of RWTO in all she does. At a quiet ceremony recently at the Township Leeds and Thousand Islands Archives, several of the scrapbooks so carefully cared for by Margaret were presented to the archives for safe keeping. They are now available to the public for viewing. In September, at The Opinicon Resort in Chaffeys Locks, Margaret was presented with her Cora Bailey pin, recognizing her dedication and contributions to RWTO Gananoque Branch. Margaret Mathers, a much loved teacher, a woman dedicated to serving her community in many ways, does not seek praise or recognition for herself but instead shines quietly wherever she happens to be. All who have been touched by her kindness and friendship feel truly blessed.

CPHC hockey event hits the ice tonight Enjoy an event that celebrates Canada's game while supporting programs and services for local senior citizens. The Leeds and Grenville Charity Hockey Challenge will take place at the Brockville Memorial Centre on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. The exhibition game will include former NHL and OHL players as well as political leaders (scheduled to attend is Patrick Brown, leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservatives) and local dignitaries and celebrities. The event is a fundraiser for Community and Primary Health Care (CPHC), a not-for-profit organization that caters almost entirely to the needs of older adults who live in the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark area.

Co-chairs of the hockey event are MP Gord Brown, MPP Steve Clark and Brockville Mayor David Henderson. George Tackaberry and Gerald Tallman are serving as honorary chairs. There will be two 20-minute periods separated by a 20-minute intermission. Youngsters will hit the ice during the break, and the CPHC draw for two round-trip economy tickets to any Air Canada destination will take place before the puck drops to start the second period. Game tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at the door. Brown served for several years as chair of a similar hockey event in support of the United Way. Those exhibition games were held in a different Leeds and Grenville community each year.

Kayakers support cardiovascular program

Rick Trapp and his buddies Gary Running and Doug Cartan, have paddled the Rideau System and the Trent Severn Waterway the past four years in support of BGH’s Brockville Cardiovascular Program, which receives no government funding. Trapp experienced this local rehabilitation service in 2013, having had a heart attack requiring triple bypass surgery. Soon after, in 2014, with encouragement from his friends, he started kayaking with a vision of raising much-needed funds for the program. Through his continued commitment, Trapp will plan another watercourse next year. From left are Julie Caffin, vicepresident and chief nursing executive; Jason Lafave, kinesiologist; Helen Ostap, RN; and donor Rick Trapp.

George Tackaberry (next to left) receives his Canada 150 medal from MP Gord Brown, Athens Mayor Herb Scott and MPP Steve Clark. Tackaberry was selected for the honour by the township; the other 12 municipalities in the Leeds and Grenville area also chose a recipient. In all, more than 150 medals were presented as part of the local recognition program commissioned by Brown and Clark to celebrate the milestone anniversary of Confederation.

With the arrival of National School Bus Safety Week, it is disconcerting to read a Leeds County OPP release about there having been several recent reports of motorists failing to stop for flashing red lights. Although dash cams and similar devices are becoming more common and would help with efforts to investigate incidents and lay charges, that will not provide a quick fix for the ongoing problem associated with drivers who don't seem to notice or care about how their behaviour is putting lives at risk. A fine of $400 plus six demerit points for a first conviction might, to some extent, serve as a deterrent. Having the fine doubled if the infraction occurs in a community safety zone might also help discourage drivers from taking the chance. Knowing that the local constabulary is probably making more of an effort at this time of year to enforce school bus rules of the road is also something motorists should consider. Unfortunately, there can't be a cruiser on every block during those weekday morning and afternoon pickup and drop-off periods. According to the Ontario School Bus Association, there are more than 18,000 professional drivers whose job it is to safeguard more than 825,000 elementary and secondary students — about two-fifths of the province's total school population. Parents rely on those professionals to ensure that children are transported to and from their homes safely five times a week, 10 months a year. Apparently, it adds up to in excess of 2 million kilometres of driving every day. Is it too much for all the other drivers on the road to do their part by being aware of their surroundings and to stop when a school bus is flashing its red lights and extending its stop arm as youngsters await to climb aboard or exit the vehicle? It shouldn't be. "Help keep our children safe," note the OPP. "Pay attention!"

Father comes to an acceptance of Mother’s attempts to bring the outdoors in

Some Fall seasons Mother liked more than others. When it got so cold, we had to start wearing our felt slippers after supper, and the frost came early, Mother got a look of despair on her face. Winter wouldn’t be far off, and that would mean snow, ice, and trips into Renfrew only when necessary. It would mean the small panes of glass in the windows would be frosted up, and the trees in the yard, would be as bare as badgers. But that year, Fall held off, and the warm days Mother loved, held on. A few bright orange and red leaves still clung to the big maple tree in our back yard, but the ground around formed a soft blanket of vivid colours. Mother loved the Fall leaves, and when the warmth of a late summer hung on, she didn’t seem to mind the coming of winter so much. That year Mother went out to the back yard un-

der the maple tree, and choosing very carefully, the most perfectly formed, and the brightest of the coloured leaves, she brought them into the house. She would take a slab of hard wax, which came in sheets of four or six in a box, and melt it on the back of the cook stove. The wax would have been bought for melting and then pouring into the tops of jars of relishes, pickles, jams and jellies to prevent mold from forming. The pot stayed on the reservoir to keep it from reforming

into a hard mass. All the leaves Mother had picked so carefully from the back yard were perfectly formed and with their stems still attached. They would be gently placed on a tea towel on the bake table, in order of size. I could watch, but I couldn’t touch a leaf in case it would break. This was a job for Mother alone. Bringing the pot of melted wax to the bake table, very carefully she would gently take one leaf at a time and dip it into the melted wax. Then each waxed leaf was put on a spread-out copy of the Renfrew Mercury, where it sat until the wax had hardened to Mother’s liking. The leaves would be used to decorate the centre of our dinner table, bringing what Mother thought was a touch of colour to an otherwise drab and ordinary place for our meals. When she first waxed fallen leaves a few years back, Father thought it was a

waste of time, and made the comment, “We burn those, you know.” But that didn’t stop Mother from doing what she did every year when Fall came. Of course, the leaves would be lost on the old red and white checked oilcloth, worn at the corners. And heaven forbid that our one and only white linen tablecloth used only for special occasions and when company came, be brought out of the trunk in the upstairs hall. And so, Mother would take two white flour-bag sheets and overlap them on our old pine table, covering the checked tablecloth completely. And in the centre she would carefully arrange the waxed maple leaves... the larger ones in the middle and the smaller ones fanned out around them. And I would think how clever was my mother! And I would wait for Father’s reaction the first time the table was decorated. He saw them, alright. But it

looked like he finally accepted what Mother did in the kitchen, and what she did to the table was up to her, and he actually had a bit of smile on his face. I knew, after several days of the leaves being on the table, and with the heat of the Findlay Oval, having an effect on them, the leaves would start to curl at their edges. And it was then I knew that Father had finally accepted Mother’s idea of bringing a bit of the outdoors inside. Because he took the salt and pepper shakers, and very carefully placed them on the very edges of the leaves that were starting to curl, to keep them in shape a bit longer. Not another word was said about burning leaves. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Discoverwhat1000IslandsVillagehastooffer This iconic 99-year-old piece of history is being turned into a new community.

1000 Islands Village includes a range of features sure to attract local residents and tourists alike. The village is located at the former Grenville Christian College site on the north side of County Road 2 just west of Maitland and a few minutes east of Brockville. Owners Dennis and Margaret Bank purchased the century-old building about five years ago and have since been restoring and renovating the beautiful structure. Their efforts to rejuvenate the property includes two retail components that opened recently, along with a grand ballroom for special events, a chapel and gymnasium. River West Co. is located on the main level of 1000 Islands Village. The 6,000-square-foot store provides a luxury shopping experience that offers something for everyone, according to General Manager Stefanie Chauvin. The shop was named for the areas location along the St. Lawrence River, being geographically in the western third of the Seaway. The diverse and ever-changing selection at River West Co. includes a women’s clothing line, as well as a range of accessories and Lazy One pj’s for the whole family. Home décor includes furniture accent pieces - as well as some locally-crafted goods. There are also seasonal decorations and related gift items, souvenirs and a small selection of gourmet foods including local brands like Gibbons Maple Syrup, Bennetts Honey and Kricklewood Farms Sunflower oil products to name a few. The store also showcases the artwork of local artist Phil Chadwick within the gallery portion of the Great Hall, and 1000 Islands keepsakes and photography from Ian Coristine. Check the River West Co. Facebook page for updates on what’s happening in the shop. Located at the main entrance to the village and next to the store is Café Selah. The Café got its name from the Hebrew word “Selah” interpreted to be a musical direction for taking a break to pause and reflect. This is exactly what owners Dennis & Margaret had in mind when designing the space, the goal is to offer a nice relaxed atmosphere that feels like home for folks to gather, and decompress, Chauvin noted.

The café has its own pastry chef and offers numerous hot beverage options as well as cold drinks and a daily lunch menu. The store and café are open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 5. There is plenty of parking in front of the building. 1000 Islands Village also has many multi-use spaces to offer to the community. The beautiful chapel that includes a balcony and a grand phantom-of-the-opera-ish pipe organis situated on the west side of the local attraction. The chapel can be booked for weddings, graduations and other gatherings and special events. The village’s east end River Rock Ballroom can seat more than 400 and has on-site catering. The ballroom has already hosted a few events this year and is currently taking Christmas party bookings. The village also features an outdoor patio area amongst the water gardens with a glassed-in pavilion available for seasonal rentals; a double gymnasium already in use by local recreational groups is available to book for events such as crafters markets, sports camps etc. Renovations to the second floor of 1000 Islands Village are nearing completion. With the gleaming refinished hardwood floors, high ceilings and crisp lighting it would be the perfect place for a studio, spa, hair salon or office space according to Dennis and Margaret. As for refurbishment of the third and fourth floors, that’s still in the planning stage. Suites are a possibility, and the owners would consider build-to-suit opportunities. The south side of the upper floors provides a stunning view of the St. Lawrence River. A boutique resort Retirement Village is being planned for the newly

renovated Riverside Villas on the east side of the property, with many unit configurations to choose from. Stay tuned for upcoming details on this project. The village is also home to a stellar group of students that attend Fulford Academy (BAU) in Brockville as they continue their ESL studies with a world-renowned curriculum and top notch teaching staff to guide them on their path. Check the 1000IslandsVillage Facebook page for updates. 1000 IslandsVillage and RiverWest Co.will host a grand open house on Wednesday, Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Drop in and experience for yourself the many aspects of this blossoming community, where you will come as strangers, leave as friends and return as family… welcome to the Village! Enjoy tribute to the Beatles at Brockville Arts Centre on Saturday, Oct. 28 ONES, the brainchild (and dream) of singer, songwriter and recording artist Frank Zirone, is a production featuring the number 1 hits of The Beatles in North America, with a very special nod to Canada. The show will be presented at the Brockville Arts Centre on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 8 p.m. Unknowingly, this special project has been years in the making, beginning with that very first Beatles performance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Throughout Zirone's years of writing, recording and performing, The

Beatles and their music have deeply influenced his career almost every step of the way. Zirone's long history in the music business makes him well suited to create and produce a show such as ONES, according to a release. He has been nominated for a Juno, toured around the world and worked with acts such as The Monkees, Loverboy, Herman’s Hermits, Saga, Gary Puckett, Max Webster, Randy Travis, and Triumph. Frank’s body of work, extensive history and reputation have

earned him the respect of some of the finest musicians in Canada allowing him to gather unequalled talent for his production of the ONES show. Zirone admits the decision to proceed with the ONES project was a leap of faith. “I had to follow my heart. It’s scary but at this stage in my musical career, I wanted to write, produce and perform in a show that portrays not only a note-perfect representation of The Beatles music, but also conveys the 'feeling' of the seven years that they dominated music. The number 1 hits have lent themselves perfectly to a chronology of those years.” The ONES show is unique. Not only is it a tribute to The Beatles through their music, it imparts the stories behind the songs, the times and The Beatles themselves, taking you on a trip down Penny Lane, a Magical Mystery Tour if you will, of

the 1960s and the period when The Beatles dominated the charts and our hearts. ONES brings together a beautifully choreographed and carefully researched multimedia presentation, a visual story of the Fab Four from Liverpool, along with the performance of an 11-piece band, capturing an exhilarating time and taking the audience back to those heady days of Beatlemania and the music we just couldn't get enough of. According to Zirone, 2016 was a pilot year for the show, a proving ground. “I wanted to see if I could get this great beast, which requires a minimum of 16 people to operate, off the ground.” Wildly enthusiastic turnouts and standing ovations have removed all doubt. After a highly successful 2016, Canada’s most exciting tribute to the music of The Beatles returns to southern Ontario in 2017. The tour per-

formers include a dynamic lineup of stars in their own right, encompassing a who's who of the Canadian music scene, representing a broad range of talent and expertise across all genres of music. Al Joynes of Q107's Psychedelic Sunday, narrates the show, participating in the story both on screen and off, providing some humorous moments as he shares the "behind the scenes" details to the audience. ONES is about the songs that defined an entire generation and changed the musical landscape forever. A captivating two-hour performance that has audiences dancing, singing, laughing and shouting for more. As a grand finale to the show, ONES performs a number 1 hit from each of the Beatles as solo artists. Tickets can be purchased at the arts centre box office on King Street West as well as at brockvilleartscentre.com.

It might seem hard to believe, but this January will mark 20 years since this area was coated in a thick layer of ice that toppled not only trees, but much of the power grid. The power went out, businesses closed, shelters were opened, and the

community came together to support one another. For those that lived it, Ice Storm ’98 is forever etched in their minds. The Brockville Museum is asking for the public's help as it creates a new exhibit that reflects on this memorable

historical event. “Although we have some photographs that were collected right after the storm, we don’t have any objects in our collection to represent the human side of this natural disaster,” Brockville Museum curator/director Natalie Wood stated in a release. “We’re seeking the community’s help. We’re looking for the personal items that tell an Ice Storm story: the sleeping bag you used while at the TISS shelter, the candles you used to light the room while your family played board games to pass the time, or the battery-operated radio you used to listen to Bruce Wylie,” Wood added. Anyone who has an object (that he or she is willing to loan to the museum for the exhibit) that tells a story about what it was like to live through the 1998 Ice Storm in Brockville, is asked to contact the museum at museum@brockville.com. Please include the story (typed or written) that goes with the object; sending a photo of the object would be very helpful. A museum staff member will then be in touch about using the object in the upcoming exhibit. Please note that the museum is specifically seeking objects, not photographs. The exhibit will open in early January. For those interested in sharing their stories, there will be a special Talk & Tea on Jan. 11 at 2 p.m. (Talk & Tea takes place the second Thursday of each month) that will encourage the exchange of stories. The Brockville Museum is located downtown at 5 Henry St. just south of Water Street and west of Hardy Park.

The legend Harrison Ford returns in masterful Blade Runner 2049 MOVIE: Blade Runner 2049 STARRING: Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Robin Wright, Anna de Armas, Sylvie Hoeks and Jared Leto DIRECTOR: Denis Villeneuve RATING: 14A Blade Runner stands as one of the greatest and most influential films of all time. It's also one of my favourites. I admit I felt some wariness at the thought of a sequel, but it was quickly overshadowed by my excitement at returning to this dark future. A replicant is an artificial human created as a slave race. When the replicants rebelled the technology was abandoned until Niander Wallace (Jared Leto) revived it with replicants who were more obedient. However, there are still some older rogue models. They continue to be hunted by members of the police called Blade Runners. LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling) is a next generation replicant, and a Blade Runner. On a recent mission he uncovers something disturbing. He finds the bones of a replicant with signs that she had died giving birth. If it becomes known that replicants could have children it would shatter what's left of civilization. Lieutenant Joshi (Robin Wright), orders K to find and bury the child and all evidence of it. Wallace also wants the child. He has his personal replicant, Luv (Sylvie Hoeks,) keep tabs on K's investigation. Meanwhile K begins a journey that will force him to question everything he thinks he knows. In the end all roads lead to Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) and the secrets he still protects. Some movies you merely sit and watch. You enjoy them in the moment, but when the film ends so too does the moment. Blade Runner 2049 isn't that kind of film. It's an experience that carries you away while you're watching it, and lives with you long after the lights

My Take

MARK HASKINS go out. Breathtaking visuals immerse you in a dark future of a civilization that teeters on the knife's edge of destruction. The twists and turns of its mystery draws you deeper into the story. It re-creates the darkness, the heaviness, and the atmosphere of the original film perfectly, and yet manages to be unique in its own right. It's the kind of film where every scene and every line and every actor is crucial. Robin Wright, Sylvie Hoeks and Jared Leto each gives the audience something different, but each one is mesmerizing. Anna de Armas is perhaps the most stunning. As Joi, K's holographic girlfriend, she's an innocent, but you're never sure if she's even real. There aren't words to express what it’s like to see Harrison Ford as Deckard again. I didn't think it would ever happen. I will say Ford is a legend, and every bit deserving of the title. Ryan Gosling gives a stark portrayal of a man who isn't exactly human, but longs to be. His performance is at times masterfully subtle, and at others overwhelmingly powerful. Every cue, every expression and every line is meticulously thought out, but with an execution that is effortless. Blade Runner 2049 is a master class in film. Mark Haskins’ column is a regular feature.

SAFETY TIPS

Candles: If you use candles, make sure you keep them away from all combustible materials. Never leave them unattended and place them out of reach of young children. Candles should be placed in solid, secure candle holders and protected by a glass chimney.

Topic of electric cars once again up for discussion “Hello Brian, I just bought a 2017 Honda Accord. I was wondering if you recommend getting the car Krown rust-proofed? Also last year I rust proofed my 2008 Honda Accord. Should it be done again? Thank you. I enjoy reading your articles.” L.H. If you plan on keeping your new Honda for anything more than five or six years, yes Krown rustproofing is a good idea. And yes that process should be repeated annually on any vehicle to maintain the protection and the warranty. “Hi Brian, Great to see you’re getting questions on EVs (electric vehicles)! I’m not sure the author of the question would be interested, but maybe fellow technicians would. I understand that the air conditioning system in an EV is powered by an electrical compressor off of the high voltage drive battery. I’ve heard this can lead to potentially dangerous situations if incorrect compressor oils are used since there is more voltage required to push its way through an oil that is more conductive. I have found that the AC in my EV car is really efficient - all of my range records are set with the AC enabled. Heat, though, that impacts my range. You’re correct about dressing for it to reduce the load on cabin heating. Owners can also ‘pre-condition’ their EVs while they’re still plugged in, to warm everything before heading out and help minimize the range loss. Finally, the heat and AC are also used to keep the drive batteries happy in many EVs, which a driver has no control over; again the range reduction can be lowered by preconditioning while still plugged. I’m still loving your column. By the way - I just bought an electric motorcycle (a zero motorcycle brand). It’s loads of fun with no heat or AC to affect my range. Jeff Goodman Jeff is an electric vehicle enthusiast/crusader and has helped organize the EV displays and infor-

mation center at the annual North Grenville Sustainability Fair held in Kemptville. I’ve met him several times at this event and he always seems to know how to collect a great bunch of EV owners who love to talk about their rides and experiences with them. Jeff’s note here was in response to a recent reader who wrote in asking about how the use of the HVAC system in an EV would affect its range. As we enter one of the best seasons for a recreational drive, one quick note to help improve road safety. Few drivers ever think of fallen leaves as a driving risk, but trying to stop suddenly or make a sharp turn while your vehicle’s tires are riding on wet fallen leaves is much akin to doing the same things on ice or packed snow. The loss of control in these situations often leads to fender benders at the least and can involve much more serious results. When driving this fall (especially in wet weather), keep an eye out for leaves packed down on the road surface and use the opportunity to practice your best winter defensive driving skills. Local efforts underway to aid Hurricane Irma relief in Cuba

Air Conditioning & Heating

BY MARLA DOWDALL

mdowdall@metroland.com

Having forged a connection with a church in Cuba, then just a year-and-ahalf ago undertaking a mission trip there, Leeds Grenville citizens want to once again reach out and help. In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, Doreen and Wayne Thornhill and Kathy and Tom Colwell are leading an effort to take much-needed supplies and financial assistance to aid those having to rebuild not only their homes, but also their lives. Irma made its way into Cuba Sept. 9 as a category 5 storm, leaving in its wake much devastation; apartments and homes reduced to rubble and collapsed buildings, amongst a plethora of other damage. Through the Thornhills' and Colwells' church, St. James Anglican in Maitland and the Anglican Parish of All Saints South Grenville (St. Paul's Cardinal and St. John, Prescott), they had previously established a partnership with Archdeacon Halbert Pons Santana and the congregation of San Lucas Episcopal church in Santiago de Cuba. “Although Santiago was spared the major wrath of Hurricane Irma,” a press release explained, “the people there are working very hard to support their families, friends and fellow countrymen who lost everything.” The team of four volunteers, the Thornhills and the Colwells, will leave for Cuba and the San Lucas Episcopal Church Nov. 29. At this time they will deliver the supports they have been able to collect as well as “work with the people there in any way possible to assist with the relief efforts.” Wayne noted at this point they are unsure of exactly what they will be doing during their time in Santiago, but will rely on Father Halbert, as in the past, for direction. Needed items Items identified by Father Halbert as necessary and needed include medicines, toiletries and clothing. “As there is a cost to transporting large amounts of supplies, the organizers are encouraging financial donations which can then be used to purchase building supplies, furnishings, food, clothing and those items most urgently needed,” the release details. Financial donations of $20 or more will receive a tax receipt. Those wishing to make a monetary do-

with their thoughts, she then made some enquiries through the Anglican Church of Canada. As a result, the suggestion was made to partner with the Episcopal Church in Santiago de Cuba. St. James took the idea and ran with it, embarking on a three-year journey of raising funds to get there. After the Thornhills undertook an initial trip to the San Lucas Episcopal Church with Father Halbert, his wife Yelene and children Jose and Juan, the idea was born to start planning a mission trip with the church Youth Group. After several major fundraising events and community support, the group of 14 – six youth, one youth worker and seven adult chaperones - brought between 200-300 kg of donated items as gifts for the Cuban people in March of 2016. Also, as part of the trip, the group refurbished and painted the church and provided support for the children’s centre.

The beginning The relationship between the local churches here in Leeds Grenville and in Cuba began four years ago. During the summer months of 2013, St. James was looking for a philanthropic or humanitarian relief-type project, one which could include their newly-formed Youth Group. Diminished public services discussed at town hall meeting in Brockville BY TIM RUHNKE

truhnke@metroland.com

Privatization involves public services that affect all aspects of life. That was part of the message delivered at a town hall meeting held at the Brockville Convention Centre on Tuesday, Oct. 10. About 70 people attended the evening session organized by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) as part of its We Own It campaign. Speakers at the meeting were MPP Steve Clark, MP Gord Brown, OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas and Brockville Councillor Leigh Bursey. Moderator Gareth Jones, an OPSEU regional vice-president, noted that the meeting is about communities and families. The public will be better informed about the negative effects of privatization if people engage the subject, according to Jones. Among the sectors highlighted as part of the campaign initiated about a year ago are health care, electricity and highway maintenance. Citing a successful communitybased campaign to reverse a plan to close the Service Ontario outlet in Kemptville, Jones indicated that it is possible for people to effect change when they get together. "You can make a difference," Jones stated. "You absolutely can." Thomas noted that OPSEU is not

affiliated with a political party, unlike certain other unions. In noting that he believes in working with the three main political parties in Ontario, the president did not shy away from criticizing the current government that "has all but forgotten" small-town and rural Ontario. The president also referred to private-public partnerships that result in higher costs and lower service levels. He also spoke of the increase in managerial positions in the public sector at a time when front-line jobs are being cut and services are diminishing. Clark also spoke of the Kemptville Service Ontario drive as well as the We Own It initiative. He recalled observing the great response the antiprivatization campaign received when it visited the Delta Fair this summer. It's more than just signing a petition, according to the MPP; "it's about the conversation." As for highway maintenance contracts, Clark indicated that the government basically lowered the standard which has led to people dying. Brown noted that he came to listen and to support public services in Ontario and Canada. The MP commented that he fights back against the belief that public servants are "a bunch of fat cats." Bursey made his remarks and then left in order to attend a city council meeting. He told the audience that

As for privatization, the councillor stated that he is not going to demonize privatization, commenting that he doesn't have to; the facts

speak for themselves. The other three speakers spoke about not giving up on efforts to establish a secure treatment facility for women at the Brockville Mental Health Centre.

Jones acknowledged the convention centre for donating the use of the hall as well the food and drinks. Please visit insidebrockville.com for more coverage of the town hall meeting. on

We would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to our amazing family and friends for all their thoughts and prayers, donations of money, gift cards, food and support through Wayne’s brief illness and passing. Your love and support saw us through a very difficult time. I would also like to thank everyone for the messages of sympathy, phone calls, food, donations to charities and for attending Wayne’s Celebration of Life at the Legion. Your presence showed what a truly loved man Wayne was. Also to Cogeco Cable, the Gordon Pipe Band and the Smiths Falls Bears for the beautiful tributes paid to Wayne. It truly meant a lot to us. He would have been so humbled. We would like to thank the Gordon Pipe Band for coming to the Celebration of Life and playing some of Wayne’s favourite tunes, especially Amazing Grace. We know how hard that was for you to do. He was so proud of that band. To my friends and co-workers at Metroland Media, thank you for your continued support, the beautiful flowers and card with collection from all of you. Much love and appreciation to Jeff, Jen, Claire and Lauren for putting together the slide show for the celebration of life. Thank you to the Legion Ladies Auxiliary for the beautiful luncheon provided at the Celebration of Life. To my dear friends and all my family for the constant support and companionship you give me. Brockville General Hospital unveils sign of bigger things to come MONICA MROZ

Brockville General Hospital (BGH) is building on its strengths to continue to be a quality health-care provider in the region. That was the message delivered on Friday, Oct. 6, during the official sign unveiling of the hospital’s multimillion-dollar redevelopment, expected to begin next year. The five-floor addition on the east side of the current Charles Street Site will account for the largest amount of public spending in the LeedsGrenville region in its history, noted LeedsGrenville MPP Steve Clark at the building sign launch. The redevelopment is not just about bricks

and mortar, Clark stressed, but a signal that the BGH team is here to stay as a major employer and deliverer of high quality health care. Clark recognized that the community hospital — like many others — has been through some challenging times during the past couple of years; but, “quality heath care is here to stay. Today is a sign of good things to come.” The 175,000 sq. ft addition will see the transfer of services from the hospital’s Garden Street site to a single campus at the Charles Street site. The hospital is also bordered by Ormond and Pearl streets. The new tower will be perpendicular to Bartholomew Street, where the city of Brockville has started upgrading infrastructure

in preparation for the build. The city has promised $4.7 million toward the project, while the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation has committed $10 million. The value of the project has not yet been released,

however, pending the closing of tenders from five shortlisted contractors later this month, explained the hospital’s marketing and communications specialist, Abby McIntyre. See Hospital page 29

HOSPITAL

From page 28

The project combines new construction and renovations. It will consolidate programs and services to include an expanded acute mental health and addictions program; an increase of in-patient beds in the complex continuing care, palliative care and rehabilitation departments; and a relocation of support facilities. The

occupancy target is 2020. The state-of-the art care facility and attributes of the geographic region come together to attract and maintain the best and brightest medical care specialists, hospital board co-chair Jim Cooper told the gathering. While acknowledging that Brockville cannot compete for services with hospitals in larger centres, such as Toronto, Ottawa or Kingston,

“what we do, we have to do the best. It’s what we strive for here everyday at BGH.” Brockville Mayor David Henderson said the building project is a critical investment for the region’s largest employer to continue to serve the area well. SAFETY TIPS Smoke Alarms: Test your smoke alarms. If a fire starts in your home while you are asleep, you want to know about it immediately. Some homes are equipped with electrically-connected smoke alarms that may not work when the power is out. Make sure your home has a battery-operated smoke alarm on every level.

30 ST. LAWRENCE NEWS - Thursday, October 19, 2017

Protecting forests is focus of Transition Brockville's October meeting Diana Beresford-Kroeger will be featured at the next Transition Brockville presentation. The visionary scientist and acclaimed local author will introduce her documentary, Call of the Forest — The Forgotten Wisdom of Trees, nominated for an award by the Pariscience International Film Festival, and answer questions after its screening. The gathering will take place at the Brockville Public Library on Buell Street on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. Humans cut down billions of trees every year, according to a Transition Brockville release. Today, only five per cent of the world’s old growth forests remain intact. Yet trees are one of this planet’s most significant creators of food, new medicines and oxygen. Forests hold the answer to many of the world’s problems, from climate change to human health and well-being. She explores the science, folklore and history of this essential ecosystem, reminding us that when we improve our profound human connection to woodlands we can restore not only our health but our planet. From the sacred sugi and cedar forests of Japan, the ancient Raheen Wood of Ireland, and the walnut and redwood trees of America, to the great boreal forest of Canada, Call of the Forest tells the amazing stories behind the history and legacy of these ancient forests while also explaining the science of trees and the irreplaceable roles they play in protecting and feeding the planet. As she travels across the globe to tell the story of the life and the science of the global forest, Beresford-

Kroeger presents a revolutionary conception of their value to all life and a message that could, literally, save mankind from itself. Carbon levels in the atmosphere are rising. As the planet warms, it becomes more difficult to alter the outcome of human impact on climate change. Woodlands are the beating

heart of our ecosystem and BeresfordKroeger’s call to action — to protect the native forests of the world and for every person to plant one tree a year for the next six years — provides a simple and powerful solution for climate change. The Oct. 22 presentation is free and open to the public; however, a free will

donation to Transition Brockville is always welcomed. Transition Brockville was founded by local residents 10 years ago to provide a non-partisan forum for sharing information about how each of us, in our daily lives, can help to slow the rate of global warming, reduce our dependence on depleting fossil fuels,

and adapt to the impacts of resource depletion and climate change. It focuses on educational presentations and active partnerships with community organizations that share its goal of making the community more resilient and sustainable. For more information, visit transitionbrockville.com.
