Two former Brockville Collegiate Institute (BCI) students have been honoured for their lifelong accomplishments. Award-winning entrepreneur Greig Clark, who attended BCI from 1965 to 1969, and 1991 grad Michael Eamon were inducted into the school’s Hall of Excellence at a ceremony in the school’s auditorium on Saturday, Nov. 4. They join 52 other alumni in the Hall who have distinguished themselves in the academic and professional world, and who have used their lives to improve their communities. The annual Hall of Excellence awards are a “rich and wonderful tradition” that inspire current students, principal Chris Boston noted during the ceremony's opening address. Celebrating the successes of previous graduates influences current students to look ahead to what’s possible in their pursuit of excellence in character and achievement, he added. It was 26 years ago to the day that Eamon gave the valedictory address to his graduating class. In noting that he was blessed and honoured to be part of BCI’s legacy, Eamon said he learned the three core elements of life at the high school: hard work, humilMonica Mroz/Metroland ity and fun. an institution he says closely models the environment of BCI. They are both communities that are big enough to have experiences and diversity of opinion and interests, but small enough to enjoy a sense of community and family. In addition to his academic work, Eamon has published a book and is an international guest lecturer. As well, he is chair of the International Advisory Board for Collegiate Way International, director of continuing education and lecturer at Trent University, and adjunct professor at the Frost Centre for Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies. Greig Clark founded College Pro Painters in 1971 to help pay his way through school at the University of Western Ontario. Since then, the company has grown into a nationwide enterprise and is the largest residential painting company in the world. Clark also noted three important elements to life: learn, giving is more satisfying and receiving, and you can’t make old friends. Hang on to your high school friends, he stressed. “It takes work, even with fancy things

like Facebook.” Honesty, integrity and treating others with respect and dignity bring a richness to life, Clark added. Clark was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year in 1979 by the Financial Post and among Top Ten Entrepreneurs of the Decade in 1990 by Profit magazine. “An entrepreneur finds a need and fills it,” he said. He has served on the boards of the Toronto Christian Resource Centre, Trails for Youth, Trinity College School and the Ivey Entrepreneurial Advisory Board. Both stressed the importance of teamwork — knowledge gained while Clark was active in BCI’s football, basketball, gymnastics and lacrosse teams, and Eamon as a member of the school’s concert band and choir. “You learn a ton from playing team sports,” Clark said. “Everybody has to pull together to make it work.” Monica Mroz/Metroland

Brockville flies the flag, shines the light on violence against women TIM RUHNKE truhnke@metroland.com

The Brockville Police Service remains part of the purple movement. A Shine the Light flag was raised in front of the station on Parkedale Avenue on Wednesday morning, Nov. 1. It is the second consecutive year that city police are flying the purple flag during November, which is Woman Abuse Prevention Month in Ontario. The annual Shine the Light campaign is being led locally by Leeds and Grenville Interval House, which provides an emergency shelter for abused women and their children as well as other confidential support and outreach counselling services free of charge. In addition to turning the united counties area purple in November, Interval House is trying ti raise awareness of the ongoing problem as well as the profiles of agencies that provide help to women trying to free themselves from violence and abuse. The flag sends a message to victims " ... that their community cares for them," Interval House executive director Charlene Catchpole said at the ceremony. The gesture also tells abusers that perpetrators are not welcome here, according to Catchpole. She expressed her appreciation to city police for taking part in the campaign. "You give women the courage to ask for help," stated Catchpole. The director noted that one in three women will experience some form of gender-related violence in her lifetime. Estimates indicate $7.4 billion is spent in Canada per year to deal with the aftermath of violence against women, according to Catchpole. She told the gathering that it takes an average of seven attempts for a woman to leave her abuser for good. The Interval House shelter is operating at an average of 120 per cent capacity, the executive director noted. Brockville Police Chief Scott Fraser said it's "almost discouraging" that abuse is still occurring in the city every

He commented that police have come a long way in dealing with violence against women, a subject he indicated is no longer taboo to discuss. "We continue to learn," Fraser added. The chief encouraged women affected by violence to come forward and reach out to city police — the Brockville station is open around the clock — or other agencies that offer support services.

There was also a purple flag-raising ceremony behind city hall early Wednesday afternoon. Campaign activities planned for later in the month include a port tasting and pairing evening at Courthouse Lodge in downtown Brockville on Thursday, Nov. 16. The nearby lighting of the trees or courage at Courthouse Green is planned for 8:30 p.m. that night.

The local launch of the 16 Days of Action will take place at the Women's Monument on Blockhouse Island in downtown Brockville on Nov. 24 at 11:30 a.m. The campaign begins on Nov. 25 and ends on Dec. 10, International Human Rights Day. There is also a National Day of Remembrance event planned for the monument on Dec. 6 at 4:30 p.m. Interval House is selling purple

Christmas cake and cookie sales support MS society in Leeds Grenville MONICA MROZ

Take a cake break and support those with multiple sclerosis all in one bite. The 46th annual MS Christmas Cakes and Cookies Campaign begins the week of Nov. 6. All proceeds from sales of the traditional Christmas fruitcakes, puddings and Scottish shortbreads support the Leeds-Grenville chapter of the MS Society of Canada. The sweet treats are ready for gift giving in decorative and festive tins and boxes and are available at many locations in the region. This is the local society’s major fundraiser of the year, and all money raised in the community stays local to support programs and services, explained chapter co-ordinator Margaret Loiselle. The goal for this year’s campaign is $10,000. “We

rely on the support of the community,” said Loiselle. Between 150 and 200 people in Leeds-Grenville are affected by multiple sclerosis (MS); many receive lifeenhancing services through the local chapter, including equipment such as bath aids and grab bars, mobility equipment and support groups and education. The number of people with MS and who seek assistance is indefinite, Loiselle explained, since the disease has a slow progression and many people try to “stay under the radar” and cope on their own before seeking help. Not all those affected approach the society or ask for help because of the stigma, she said. MS research and drugs do a lot to push back the disease and reduce the number and frequency of attacks, she added. “We want for people to stay in their own homes as long as possible” and remain more independent through the society, the co-ordinator said. “People thrive in their homes; they’re happier.” The Score thrift store locations at the Brockville Shopping Centre and in Smiths Falls and Kemptville provide ongoing support to the local MS chapter by donating a portion of sales each month; this year the store is a partner in the Cakes and Cookies Campaign. “If it wasn’t for the support of the Score, I don’t think we could operate,” Loiselle said. “They’ve chosen us as their charity of choice, and we’re super grateful for that.” Besides the Score, MS cakes and cookies are also for sale at TD Canada Trust in Brockville, Prescott and Kemptville; BMO and RBC in Prescott; Kawartha Credit Union in Brockville; and CIBC and Scotiabank in Brockville on select dates. The MS Society’s annual spaghetti dinner and silent auction takes place Jan. 25 at the Brockville Royal Canadian Legion. Additional fundraisers include the springtime carnation flower sales and walk. Loiselle also encourages people to make use of the large green MS bins for clothing donations. “You’re helping your neighbour.” Check out mssociety.ca or email info.leeds@mssociety.ca.

Bud the Spud, Augusta Farms receive 2017 township business awards BRITTANY CASSELL bcassell@metroland.com

The Augusta Township economic development and tourism committee announced its award recipients for business of the year and trail blazer of the year at the annual business of the year breakfast at the Grenville Snowmobile Club north of Maynard on Friday, Nov. 3. Breakfast kicked off at 7:30 a.m., with the awards ceremony beginning shortly after. Jacqueline (Jackie) Schoemaker Holmes opened the ceremony with a brief discussion about

her work as Prescott’s first-ever business development co-ordinator. Schoemaker Holmes was previously the town of Prescott’s business retention and expansion (BR+E) co-ordinator for the BR+E process, a community-based economic development program that focuses on supporting existing businesses. “Existing businesses create local jobs,” Schoemaker Holmes said on Friday. “And they’re the ones that give back. They want to see the community succeed, because that’s how they succeed, too.” The Town of Prescott’s BR+E

program wrapped up in August, with Schoemaker Holmes quickly transitioning into her new role as Prescott’s economic development officer. Dr. Schoemaker Holmes, sociologist, researcher, teacher and commu-

nity developer, graduated from the University of British Columbia, where she received the academic knowledge and community-based experience necessary to succeed in her current role. She has worked with leading nonprofit

women’s and girls’ organizations, has conducted research in gender relations, and has taught at the post-secondary level for well over 15 years. See AUGUSTA page 7

Dr. Schoemaker Holmes’ work has been published in several Canadian newspapers and magazines, as well as in a variety of peer-reviewed academic publications. As a Prescott native, she’s passionate about the community she grew up in and feels honoured to work as the town’s first-ever economic development officer. The Augusta Township business of the year award was presented to Bud the Spud Chip Truck, located on County Road 2 in Maitland. Bernie La Chance has owned and operated the chip truck for the past eight years; however, it’s served the Maitland community for well over 28 years. The business employs four to five staff each year, and is open from April until the end of October. Bud the Spud continually donates to Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Leeds and Grenville. La Chance, who was unable to hide his shock as he heard the name of his business announced, humbly accepted the award. “We want to go all year-round, he told attendees. Following the awards ceremony, La Chance reiterated his hope to expand and winterize the chip truck, to serve the Maitland community year-round. This year, the business increased their seating capacity and installed an on-site ATM for customer convenience. Although he has a way to go before Bud the Spud will be able to open year-round, La Chance seems to be on the right track. 2017 Business of the Year nominees included OK Tire and Selleck Truck on Coun-

The first-ever Trail Blazer Award was presented in 2016 to Andrew Cole of Cole Solutions Ltd. Accepting the Trail Blazer of the Year Award was Augusta Farms, owned and operated by April Pratt and her husband Stuart. Augusta Farms is located on Kyle Road,

and is rapidly expanding. The farm started off with hens, cattle and chickens, before expanding to sell eggs, pickles, sauces, jams and other homemade products. Augusta Farms recently built a commercial-sized greenhouse so they’re able to continue growing produce into the winter months. COMMENTARY Keeping what's yours

With the Christmas season on the doorstep, now is as good a time as any to yet again spread the word about telephone and internet-related criminal scams that continue to make their way into our community. Fraudsters claiming to represent Canada Revenue Agency are still trying to steal money from residents of our region based on reports from provincial and municipal police services. One version making the rounds in areas of Eastern Ontario recently sees the potential victim's social insurance number compromised. A message urges him or her to call back and provide personal information. Don't fall for it. Resist the urge to respond or to take immediate action because it appears to be a serious situation. Canada Revenue Agency would not be making such calls, and other federal agencies or any alleged police agency would not call to threaten arrest and jail time and demand that the victim send prepaid credit card or gift card numbers or a money transfer to cover a debt or fine. Don't be afraid to ask a trusted family member or friend if you get this type of call, text or email and wonder about its legitimacy, but don't provide personal information or a payment before having that conversation. We've seen local examples in which an incoming call comes up as originating from a local phone number; it's just another element in the con aimed at taking your money or stealing your identity by making it seem that there might be something to this demand for immediate action. ‘Waste not want not’ was the way in Mary’s household

There was no way of getting out of eating a heaping bowl full of porridge for breakfast. Mother made enough to feed half of Renfrew county. And even though it was my least favourite morning food, nonetheless it was put before me, and I was expected to eat the bowl clean. If not, I would get the usual story of the starving Armenians, which meant I was supposed to be grateful that I at least had something to put in my mouth. Occasionally, and only occasionally, Mother would come home from Briscoe’s General Store with a box of Shredded Wheat. Although I was no more fond of it than I was of porridge, it was the box and the treasures inside that thrilled me to the bone! The cereal came in an oblong box, and inside were about three layers of shredded wheat ‘biscuits’, divided by cardboard sheets. It was those sheets, which caused me to rejoice when

Mother found a few extra pennies to add this special cereal to our order. Each sheet had a different picture, usually a country scene, and sometimes an animal looking out around a tree. My sister Audrey and my three brothers thought they were much too old to be bothered with the cards from the shredded wheat box, and so I became the sole owner. As soon as the box came in the house, Mother would let me rip it open and remove the cards...carefully of course, so that the biscuits wouldn’t be broken. I would get my crayons and spend

time colouring each card, and once done, they would be added to a growing collection, which I treasured, and kept securely hidden in my washstand drawer. That was because my brother Emerson threatened to fork them into the Findlay Oval when I wasn’t looking. He thought once the cards were coloured, they should be done away with. But I saved each one, and soon had a stack inches thick, held together with string. I could spend many an hour just sitting quietly with my pack of cards, looking and re-looking at them. Sometimes I would go upstairs when I had nothing else to do, and take the pile of cards out of my washstand and lay them out on the bed. I had so many that they would cover the entire quilt. The cards came with a little hole in one corner, and if you wanted to, you could put in a piece of string through the hole. But I could never figure out

what on earth, if anything, this added to the cards. The little loaves of shredded wheat weren’t individually wrapped, of course. They just sat one on top of the other inside the box. As well as loving the cards, I also loved it when the box was empty, and I could lay claim to it as well. It made a perfect bed for the smallest of my dolls, and I once tried to cram my new kitten into one, but she was having none of that. And when it came to eating the shredded wheat, like the porridge, it certainly didn’t appeal to me. Mother would pour boiling water on one of the little loaves, drain the bowl, and then add the cream and brown sugar. The rest of the family thought it was a real treat. Of course Father would still have to have his fried potatoes and salt pork as well. It didn’t take long for the shredded wheat boxes to become battered and

so I would have to tear it down into flat pieces. It was then added to the wood box, along the side where Father kept old copies of the Renfrew Mercury and the Family Herald and Weekly Star. It too would go to help start the Findlay Oval in the morning. Like everything else that came into the house, be it from the general store, or from Renfrew, or from the garden, or the smoke house, nothing was wasted. It gave me great satisfaction to know that one of Father’s favourite sayings “waste not...want not,” could be even applied to the Shredded Wheat boxes that on rare occasions came into our house. Remembrance Day service held in Maynard

The colour party prepares for the start of the Augusta Remembrance Day ceremony at Maynard Cemetery on Sunday, Nov. 5. Royal Canadian Legion branches in Prescott and Spencerville as well as the township fire department, armed forces, cadets and provincial police were represented at the annula gathering. Most communities will be holding their Remembrance Day ceremonies this Saturday, Nov. 11 starting at between 10:30 and about 10:45.

Think of Canadian military who answered the call: MP Leeds-Grenville — Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes MP Gord Brown is encouraging local residents to remember on Nov. 11 the veterans and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice defending Canada. “Veterans' Week and Remembrance Day is a time to remember and honour the men and women who have defended Canada and those who continue to serve today,” Brown stated in a release issued on Nov. 2 During this, the 150th anniversary of Confederation, Canada also marks several important historic anniversaries, he noted. It is the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, in which 10,000 Canadians were killed or wounded. Just over 100 years ago on Easter Monday April 9, 1917, all four divisions of the Canadian Corps fighting in the First World War, made up of Canadians from coast to coast, began their assault on Vimy Ridge. This was the first time all four corps had fought together, and they had joined together as part of the Battle of Arras in northern France. Canadians captured the ridge by noon of the first day, and the last of the German resistance was overcome by April 12. The Battle of Vimy Ridge was one of the most successful of the Allied offensives to date in that war and saw the capture of more ground, enemy artillery pieces, and prisoners than

any previous action by Canadian or British forces. It was not only the site of this significant battlefield victory, it was also one of the bloodiest battles in Canadian history. The Battle of Vimy Ridge remains a key moment in Canadian history. Canada is also remembering the 75th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid. Almost 5,000 Canadian soldiers took part in the ill-fated Dieppe raid on Aug. 19, 1942, that was designed to test enemy defences and gather intelligence. Close to 1,000 Canadians died and another 2,000 were captured. It was the bloodiest single day of the war for Canada. The nation is also remembering the 100th anniversary of the bloody battle of Passchendaele which began at the end of July 1917. Canadians joined the battle in the fall, and on Oct. 26 began their first assault across a desolate landscape of mud against heavy gun and artillery fire. The Canadians prevailed and, by Nov. 10, the battle was over. This impressive victory came at a horrible cost, with almost 16,000 Canadians killed or wounded. “Through the years, Canada’s brave military personnel have answered the call whenever and wherever they were needed,” the MP stated. “We all owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our veterans. On Nov. 11, please remember our Canadian veterans.” ST. LAWRENCE NEWS - Thursday, November 9, 2017 9

How we use the Internet is evolving, but can your provider keep up? We all love the Internet. Thanks to the availability of millions of new services and apps, the Internet is making it easier-than-ever to work, socialize, play, shop, learn, share, and keep ourselves entertained from our laptops, tablets, and phones. Canadians spend an average of 36.7 hours online each month, more than any other country, as we use our computers to watch movies and TV, our tablets to read, and our smartphones to browse and play. Internet usage is at an all-time high, as 89% of Canadians connect to the Internet – in fact, highspeed Internet has become so important to us that 73% of Canadians say they would be unlikely to purchase a home that didn’t have access to high-speed Internet.1 Whether you live in a small town, hamlet or village, or in downtown Toronto, Xplornet believes that all Canadians deserve great high-speed Internet. We’ve been busy improving our network to keep pace with demand, investing in our LTE network to ensure our customers can take full advantage of the online world.1

that dreaded icon spins endlessly in the middle of your screen. It can feel like you’re helpless to do anything about these problems, so you wait for the connection to improve. Why does this happen? Often, it is because of something called “peak hours.” Peak hours are times of the day when more people are online. Maybe your neighbours are streaming movies, sending emails, or just surfing the web. It is during these peak hours, when everyone is online at the same time, that some Internet service providers cannot keep up with demand and your connection becomes unreliable. Considering how important the Internet can be in day-to-day life, the challenges of a bad connection can feel endless. Our recent network improvements help solve the problem of peak hours, allowing both new and existing Xplornet customers to enjoy great high-speed Internet, even during the busiest times of the day.

Does your Internet provider give you the freedom you’re looking for?

We demand a lot of our Internet service, especially with more people online at the same time.

Whether you’re kicking back and relaxing, helping the kids with a school project, or putting in some overtime from home, Canadians are more connected than ever. Unfortunately, many of us have difficulty finding an Internet provider that can keep up, all because of where we live. As technology evolves, those who live outside of urban areas continue to be limited to what entertainment we can enjoy, how our families can

If you’re spending time online (and who isn’t these days?), you’re likely familiar with the frustration of slow connection speeds, or an Internet connection that simply doesn’t work. We’ve all experienced these problems: Netflix slows to a standstill, emails sit in your outbox, or

Xplornet’s LTE network is expanding to reach more Canadians every day, and rural residents are benefiting from the new technology. New customers can receive incredible high-speed Internet, while existing customers will see improvements to their Internet reliability.

Outsmart slow-downs with Xplornet’s new & improved LTE network. Positive ticket rewards youth’s kind act The Ontario Provincial Police is proud to be continuing its partnership with Mac's Convenience/Circle K Stores across Ontario again this year for Operation Heat 2017. These positive tickets are actually coupons valid for a free beverage at all participating Mac's Convenience/Circle K stores across Ontario. OPP officers will be on the lookout in communities across the province; and when they "catch" a youth participating in an act of kindness the youth will receive a 'thank you' which they will receive in the form of a free "ticket" for hot chocolate. Officers can also use the tickets as an icebreaker to start a conversation with youth in their patrol areas. "The OPP is pleased to participate once again in this community based initiative that recognizes youth for responsible and caring behaviour. Operation Heat gives our officers opportunities to interact and initiate relationships with youth in a positive manner within our communities," OPP Insp. Clooney film serves up dark, twisted look at ‘50s suburbia MOVIE: Suburbicon STARRING: Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Noah Jupe, Oscar Isaac, Alex Hassel and Glen Fleshler DIRECTOR: George Clooney RATING: 14A Welcome to Suburbicon 1959, a small town with big city comforts. It's home to a diverse population of white people. It's a safe place to work, live and raise a family. It's safe other than the rioters, the deceit and the murder. One night, Gardner Lodge's (Matt Damon) home is invaded by Sloan (Glen Fleshler) and Louis (Alex Hassel). It isn't clear what they want, but they tie up Gardner, his wife Rose (Julianne Moore), her twin sister Margret (Julianne Moore) and Gardner's son Nicky (Noah Jupe). Then they use chloroform to knock them out. Just before he succumbs, Nicky sees them drugging his mom, and giving her a lot more. When Nicky wakes up he's in the hospital with his father and his aunt. His mom, however, was killed. Nicky is stunned, but also a little suspicious. Then his aunt moves in. Then both his aunt and dad fail to point out the two goons in a police lineup. Then Bud

Cooper (Oscar Isaac), an insurance investigator, shows up making accusations, and Nicky is more than a little suspicious. Not long after that, the whole thing goes completely off the rails. I should also mention, while all the murder and deceit is going on, the rest of Suburbicon is losing its collective mind because the first black family has moved in. There are protests and general nastiness ending in a riot. It doesn't have a lot to do with the other story, but there you go. This is a twisted story. My wife took our kids to My Little Pony while I sat through Suburbicon, and I think I should have seen My Little Pony. It isn't that Suburbicon isn't done well. I think George Clooney tells a good story. The acting is excellent in that

everyone plays their particular sociopath well. It's just a very dark and depressing film. It is interesting, but dark and depressing. The cast is good. From Julianne Moore doing double duty as twins Rose and Margret, to Oscar Isaac playing the unscrupulous investigator, to Alex Hassel and Glen Fleshler playing violent goons. It's a case study in various sociopaths, and each actor nails their own version of creepy and twisted. Then there's Noah Jupe, who's brilliant as the story's young hero. In a cast full of despicable characters, Damon's Gardner is the worst. It is a truly unique look at a very particular kind of psychopath. Damon is too good, maybe. It's going to be hard to see him in other movies for a while. The film does have a strong political message. It is lost on no one that, besides Nicky, the members of the black family are the only decent people in Suburbicon. It is heavy handed, and other than making its point about race has nothing to do with the plot. It's a point worth making, it just had nothing to do with the story. Upper Canada Playhouse releases 2018 schedule Morrisburg’s Upper Canada Playhouse has announced its new lineup for 2018, marking the theatre’s 35th year of producing professional live theatre. It is one of the longest-running professional theatres in the province and enjoys one of the consistently largest audiences of approximately 40,000 annually, according to a release issued on Monday. The theatre’s audience is comprised of local residents from the many surrounding communities, the neighbouring larger urban areas of Cornwall, Brockville and Ottawa as well as Montreal and northern New York state. The theatre has become a tourism generator that substantially contributes to the local economy by attracting a large number of visitors and bus tours to the area. The 2018 season will reflect the winning formula that appeals to the theatre’s audiences with spring and fall live concerts, a four-show summer theatre series of a variety of comedies and a Christmas family show with added school performances. Leading off April 24-29 is the new live concert, Opry Gold, by Leisa Way and her band. Popular with playhouse audiences for her past hits Across the Pond, O Canada, We Sing For Thee and tributes to Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton, Opry Gold will feature hits of the kings and queens of country music-from Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn and Kenny Rogers to Tammy Wynette, Toby Keith, George Jones and many more. To kick off the summer season, the playhouse has snagged the rights for the first production of a new comedy, It’s Your Fu-

neral, by Jamie Williams running June 7-30. It’s a hilarious do or die comedy that’s destined to be a summer theatre classic. George attempts to deal with his gambling problem by opening a new business- Heaven’s Door Funeral Home. His efforts to pull off his first high profile event are reduced to chaos by inept and wacky employees, a gambling problem, money-laundering, bad news from his doctor and a visit from his former bookie! Next up July 5-29 is Knickers! by Sarah Quick, a comedy about a group of ladies who meet weekly at Weight Watchers. After the local pulp mill closes, they try to boost their small town’s spirit and economy by starting a custom underwear business. A hilarious and timely comedy about coping with tough times and fighting for your community. Neil Simon’s comedy Plaza Suite follows Aug. 2-26 and treats audiences to three different scenes where three different couples rent the same suite at three different timeseach with their own wildly entertaining predicaments. A classic comedy brimming with wit and wisdom. Closing the summer season is the new Norm Foster comedy The Great Kooshog Lake Hollis McCauley Fishing Derby playing Sept. 6-30. A city banker gets stuck in a sleepy town and is embroiled in the lives of the locals on the day of their annual search for a famous fish. A comedy complete with romance, broken hearts and a shark attack. The playhouse season continues Oct. 1214 with a limited engagement of one of its

most popular concerts, Derek Marshall and Nicholas Arnold, backed by a dynamite band, with their concert presentation of Dean & Jerry: What Might Have Been created by Jesse Collins. It’s a live concert with a BIG difference-musical hits and hilarious bits from the most famous comedy duo of the 50’s-Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Plus a peak at their real-life relationship, begging the question ‘what if they had never split?’ The original playhouse engagement sold out the day after it opened, so audiences are advised to book early for this one. The 2018 season comes to a magical and musical finale Nov. 30-Dec. 23 with its holiday family show, The Christmas Express by Pat Cook. A wonderful show for all ages with a fabulous concert of Christmas music performed by singers, dancers, musicians and a large local community choir. There will be public and school performances. The show will also run longer and closer to Christmas this season to accommodate audience demand. Audiences are reminded that the 2017 Christmas show, Mistletoe Magic, runs Dec. 1-17. Starring Leisa Way and her fabulous band, it’s a live concert of traditional and modern Christmas music, toe-tapping fiddling, dancing reindeer and visits from Dolly Parton and even from St. Nick himself. The playhouse box office is now booking 2018 flex passes, tickets, group and bus tours. Audiences are advised to book early to get the dates and seats they prefer. Leeds-Grenville MPP calls on minister of environment to take action on ED-19 It's time to put a stop to what would be an unprecedented move, according to Steve Clark. The Leeds-Grenville MPP is calling on Environment and Climate Change Minister Chris Ballard to revoke provincial approvals involving the proposed waste disposal site in Edwardsburgh Cardinal dubbed ED-19. The property, which is owned by the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, was given the green light by the ministry in the 1990s to be developed as a municipal waste facility for the counties' use. Leeds and Grenville did not proceed with that plan, and there have been negotiations in the last couple of years involving a potential buyer — Tomlinson — that has indicated it would like to run a waste site that would include materials from outside Leeds and Grenville. "Allowing a private operator to use 20-yearold environmental approvals to open a megadump is unprecedented and it would be against the wishes of the public and the elected council of Edwardsburgh Cardinal," Clark stated on Monday, Oct. 30. The township has declared itself an unwilling host, the MPP noted. Counties council, which recently lifted a suspension of negotiations with the prospective buyer, had asked the minister to confirm the status of the approvals that were granted about 20 years ago. A written response by a ministry official suggested that the approvals remain valid, but the matter could be reconsidered if conditions involving the site have changed or if there is new information available. Clark noted in his release on Monday that site

condition changes are documented in three expert reports submitted to the ministry by the Canadian Environmental Law Association, which represents the opposition group Citizens Against the ED-19 Dump. The MPP also noted that the "stale-dated approvals" were granted based on the premise that the counties would operate the site that would deal with waste for the Leeds and Grenville area — not a privately-run facility taking garbage from elsewhere in Ontario. Clark raised the subject of ED-19 during question period in the legislature on Monday. The minister did not commit to revoking the approvals or referring the matter to the environmental review tribunal " ... despite the compelling reasons that have been presented to him," the released indicated. The Leeds-Grenville MPP expressed disappointment that no such commitment was offered. "The minister has the authority to scrap those historic approvals and order a new environmental assessment," Clark commented. "It's now time for him to tell me and my constituents if he will take that necessary action." Ballard took over the environment and climate change portfolio in midsummer. Earlier this year and while ED-19 negotiations were suspended, counties council voted to create a waste management task force; ED-19 would be one element of that review. Clark has made a written request to counties council that any sale of the property include a condition prohibiting waste from outside Leeds and Grenville from being accepted.

Major study finds untreated hearing loss linked to dementia Although the reason for the link is as yet unclear, a recent Johns Hopkins and National Institute on Aging study shows that seniors with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those with normal hearing. Researchers say these findings “could lead to new ways to combat dementia, a condition that affects millions of people worldwide and carries heavy societal burdens.”

Discussing the difference between direct and multi-fit rims “Good morning, Brian, I read with great interest your articles from a few years back about the difference between hub-centric and lug-centric rims. It made me realize why I never liked the ride on winter tires. I have a new (to me) 2009 Hyundai Elantra and am shopping for 15” steel rims. But I haven’t been able to find a tire retailer that seems to understand the distinction (between hub-centric and non-hub-centric applications). I have a suspicion that it’s not in their interest to do so since they carry only lug-specific rims. It’s especially frustrating that the parts counter at a local Hyundai dealer was one of these retailers! You mentioned in your piece that there are a number of Canadian manufacturers of hub-centric rims. If I promise not to take it as a recommendation/endorsement, can you tell me who some of them are? I’ve been searching on Google and haven’t come up with anything.” Thanks! DH

Car Counsellor BRIAN TURNER

A company called MACPEK makes direct fit rims for your Elantra. They are hub-centric which means their centre hole will fit the car’s hub exactly, and they can be used with the original factory wheel nuts and they have the correct off-set. At the shop where I hang my day-job hat, we would order them through Lavoie Tires (a major area tire and rim wholesaler). The suggested retail price is $58.57 each. Most tire retail shops in the area would have access to this supplier. The part number for the 15" size is X40881-MAC. You can also buy them from a Hyundai dealership. Hyundai makes and sells their own steel rims but they are a little pricey at $90.12 each

The movement for active, healthy living

(some dealers will sell for less). The part number is 08405-2H050. Hopes this helps. The confusion on direct-fit and multi-fit rims is understandable on the part of consumers, but not from credible tire and rim retailers. In order for a wheel (or rim) to be safely used on a vehicle there are several measurements and designs that must be correct and/or match. The first is the wheel bolt pattern or the number of wheel bolt holes and the size of the circle they outline. If this isn’t correct, there are no legal adapters that will fix the misfit. Those adapter plates were outlawed in Ontario last year when the Motor Vehicle Act regulations were updated. They weren’t reliable or safe. The next is the hub ring size. This, as explained above, relates to the size of the large inner hole on the rim versus the size of the hub on the vehicle. This is critical be-

cause this is where the weight of the vehicle is supported by the rim (not the wheel studs or bolts). Fortunately there are safe and sturdy hub ring kits available made of ultra-tough commercial plastics. These can be used to create an exact fit when the wheel centre hole is too big. These are OK to use, but you should always get an extra set (their average cost is only $20 per set) in case one gets lost during seasonal tire changes. You’ll always need to remind your shop of their existence when bringing the vehicle in for maintenance or repairs. Finally there’s the offset measurement. If you look closely at any wheel rim when it’s removed from a vehicle, you’ll notice that the large plate that contains the bolt holes isn’t always centered inside the rim but instead is offset to the inside or outside rim edge. This offset is critical because it’s designed to work with

the vehicle’s steering geometry and it supplies the clearance to keep any brake components from rubbing on the rim as well as ensuring the manufacturer’s turning diameter specs. Those now illegal spacer plates were once used to correct a rim’s offset or to widen a vehicle’s wheel-track measurement (the distance between tires on the same axle). Monetary donations typically go toward purchasing snowsuits in sizes that were not donated, or to replace ripped or torn snowsuits, Gravelle pointed out.

by the Kinsmen Club of Prescott with the help of South Grenville students will be collecting donations of food and money along the route. The volunteers distribute more than 300

Christmas hampers to households in Prescott, Augusta and Edwardsburgh Cardinal each December. The pre-parade spaghetti dinner at Royal Canadian Legion Fort Wel-

lington Branch 97 on Henry Street West will be served from 4:30 to 6 p.m. For more information about Light Up the Night, call the Prescott Fire Department at 613-925-4777.

Leeds Grenville area residents can help guide Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind is seeking volunteer puppy raisers in the Brockville and 1000 Islands area. This is a long-term volunteer commitment of 12 to 18 months, according to a release. The volunteer raises the puppy in their home, teaching basic obedience and socialization. However, the unique part of this volunteer position is taking the puppy nearly everywhere you go. Support is provided from professional staff from Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind. You’ll need to be able to spend most of the day with the puppy, not leaving it alone for more than a couple of hours at a time. These pups are raised with the intention of being with someone 24/7 as a working guide dog. Pups are placed into homes at approximately eight weeks of age, so you will be housebound for a short time. Once the puppy’s vaccinations are in place, around four months of age, you will be asked to take the puppy anywhere you go and introduce it to as many environments and situations as possible, that it may later encounter as a guide dog. If you work outside of the home, you would start with a 16-week old puppy so that vaccinations are in place and you can take the puppy to work and public areas immediately. You are expected to take the pup for daily long walks in all weather conditions, so an active lifestyle is preferred. This is a unique volunteer oppor-

tunity, and you could help play a role in changing someone’s life. Would you be a suitable candidate for a volunteer position like this? The main thing is that the pup not be left at home alone all day. Current volunteers include stayat-home parents, post-secondary students, individuals who work from home or have their own business, parttime workers, or retirees. Puppy raisers, who are employed full-time and have permission from their employer, can have the puppy in the workplace. It’s a great way for a company to show their philanthropic spirit, and to boost morale, as employees encounter a cute little puppy at work on a daily basis. All food, supplies and veterinary expenses are provided by the organi-

zation. When the dog is ready to enter into formal training at the national training centre of Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind near Manotick, you must be prepared to give up the dog so that it may continue its journey to work as a guide dog. If you would like to learn more about the puppy raising program at Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind, email info@guidedogs.ca or call 613692-7777. Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind was established as a registered charity in 1984. The organization has provided more than 830 professionally trained guide dogs to Canadians who are visually impaired from coast to coast.

is celebrating his 80th Birthday Come and join him in celebrating on November 18, 2017 from 2:00 to 4:00pm at the Mallorytown United Church, Fellowship Hall, 1505 Cty. Rd. 2, Mallorytown.

We have been overwhelmed with kindness, and are truly thankful to all who have been a flame in our very dark days as we mourn the loss of our husband and father, Reinhard Baumann. We thank the First Response Team under the direction of Constable E. Mueller, and Madelyn from Eternal Care Cremation for the professional yet caring way they all handled the situation. We thank Pastor Carl Bull for officiating a meaningful memorial service, and the women and men of AFMC who took care of details, and prepared and served a delicious luncheon. We are grateful to all who contributed to the memorial scholarship. And we thank you, our friends and neighbours, who came alongside to offer a kind word and a hug, who prayed with and for us, who brought food, who sent flowers, and who simply took time to come, to sit and to share time with us. You have truly been, and continue to be, a light in our present darkness. Sincerely, Brigitte, Antje, Andreas, and Eric with our families

Best Wishes only!

Entrepreneurs invited to enter Otters' Den in Brockville BY BRITTANY CASSELL

bcassell@metroland.com

With the success of shows like Shark Tank or Dragons’ Den, it’s likely no surprise that a similar approach is being employed locally to assist in the growth and development of small businesses. However, this version is a little different: the mascot is friendly. “The concept is similar, but an otter is not a dragon,” explained Andrew Cole, event organizer. “It’s not something that’s mean.” Planning for the 2018 Otters’ Den event is well underway, and this year participating entrepreneurs will have a chance to win $5,000 or more toward business expenses if their pitch is successful. Up and coming local businesses are encouraged to pitch the Otters’ Den panel of investors with their business ideas. The event will take place at the Aquatarium on Friday, April 6, at 6 p.m., and is sponsored by the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC). Tickets cost $75 and are available online at www.ottersden.ca, or in person at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Leeds Grenville office in downtown Brockville. Organizers hope to sell 200 tickets, a lofty goal given just 90 tickets and 120 people attended the event in 2016. Leftover proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Big BrothFOR SALE

ers Big Sisters. The first Otters’ Den event took place in 2016 and was sponsored by 1000 Islands Community Development Corporation. For its first time running, the event was quite successful. “One deal was made,” Cole recalled of the previous year’s event. That said, many others went on to run successful businesses. Zeke Cox, senior account manager for BDC’s Kingston office chimed in, adding, “I was actually just at The Noshery for lunch, one of the presenters last year. Amazing food.” The original hope was that the Otters’ Den event would take place annually, however, scheduling conflicts pushed the second event into next year. As for the role of this year’s sponsor, BDC maintains that it's on hand to listen, coach participants, and assist in finding and securing different objectives for funding. BDC is a federal crown corporation, working largely with startups and entrepreneurs, and specializing in term lending. When questioned, Cox did note that BDC works with businesses of all sizes. “We’re actually the biggest consulting agency in Canada, which a lot of people don’t know,” added Cox, who will MC the event.

Pet adoption blitz includes Leeds and Grenville Animal Centre

Give a homeless animal the gift of a forever home and a family to call its own. The iAdopt for the Holidays drive is an Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) adoption initiative taking place at locations which include the Leeds and Grenville Animal Centre in Brockville. The campaign, supported by Royal Canin, kicked off on Nov. 1 and runs until Dec. 31 at participating SPCAs, humane societies and rescue groups nationwide. The goal is to get as many animals as possible placed into loving forever homes during the Christmas season, according to a release. “With people having time off from work and being home together as a family, the holidays are a great time to welcome a new furry companion into your home,” stated Marianne Carlyle, manager of the Leeds and Grenville centre. “Visit the Ontario SPCA Leeds and Grenville Animal Centre to take part in iAdopt for the Holidays and change an

animal’s life this holiday season.” Anyone who adopts a cat or kitten from an Ontario SPCA animal centre in November will receive a box of Arm & Hammer Slide Cat Litter, while supplies last. All cats and kittens are available for adoption for $175 and are spayed or neutered, microchipped, come with a gift of six weeks of pet insurance and are up-to-date on their vaccinations. The animal centre is located in the north end of Brockville at 800 Centennial Rd. between Stewart Boulevard and Kensington Parkway. Already have an adopted pet? Enter the iAdopt contest: Step 1 — Enter the grand prize contest at iAdopt.ca for your chance to win free pet food for a year from Royal Canin. Step 2 — Post a picture of your adopted pet on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #iAdopt, or upload directly to the gallery at iAdopt.ca for chances to win weekly pet prize packs. To learn more about iAdopt for the Holidays, visit iadopt.ca.

ST. LAWRENCE NEWS - Thursday, November 9, 2017 27

Crime Prevention Week theme is building safer communities together The week of Nov. 5-11, 2017 has been designated as Crime Prevention Week in Ontario. Once again, the Ontario Provincial Police will place emphasis on crime prevention and community safety and well-being. This year's theme for Crime Prevention Week is: "Building Safer Communities Together." The theme encourages community safety and well-being as a shared responsibility, including the engagement of multi-sector partners at a local level. In support of Crime Prevention Week, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and TD will together be launching a new partnership that will enable OPP officers to continue the OPP Community Bear Program. The OPP Community Bear Program enables OPP officers to provide reassurance and comfort to the youngest victims, which begins the process of rebuilding their sense of safety and security. The Community Bear Program focuses on how proactive measures support crime prevention. The interaction between officers and children, as well as partnerships with community agencies, address the importance of early intervention. The OPP would also like to remind the public of some of the community safety programs that assist to keep Ontario communities safe including: Crime Prevention through Environmental Design,

SafeGuard Ontario, the OPP KIDS Program and Lock It or Lose It, just to name a few. Many OPP detachments across the province offer different programs that are tailor-made

for local communities. The OPP will utilize social media to showcase some crime prevention tips and ideas using the OPP Twitter, OPP Facebook and OPP Instagram

accounts. "Crime Prevention Week 2017 promotes working together to improve community safety and well-being for all. The OPP continues to encourage

everyone to create and strengthen partnerships to work toward safer and healthier communities,” OPP Insp. Robyn MacEachern, Community Safety Services noted.
