Paul Kirkland had just returned from Syracuse and did not know about everything that would be served for lunch. Elizabethtown-Kitley's economic development committee hosted its annual business event at Cedar Valley Golf Club on Thursday, Oct. 5. Kirkland was surprised to hear that Brockville Ontario Speedway is the recipient of the township's 2017 Business of the Year Award. Located in Forthton, the speedway owned and operated by Kirkland and his wife Cheryl, dates back to 1969. The local attraction was shuttered for a few years in the late '80s and early '90s but reopened and has become a major draw with its weekly racing during the spring and summer season as well as special events, such as the 1000 Islands RV Fall Nationals set for Oct. 13-14. Elizabethtown-Kitley Mayor Jim Pickard, who noted that Kirkland grew up across the street from him, praised the recipient for all of his hard work during the past 24 years. KirkTim Ruhnke/Metroland land told the audience there have been lots of ups and downs over the years. for its help in making the speedway a success. "We're truly humbled," Kirkland said. The other nominees were City Windows and Doors, Green Things Garden Centre and Gift Shop, McCann Mechanical, Precision Contracting and Ravenhorst Motors. Billings Automotive received the Elizabethtown-Kitley award in 2016. The committee hosts the complimentary luncheon each year. About 60 people attended the event. Guest speaker at the 2017 luncheon was David Beatty, chair of the St. Lawrence Corridor Economic Development Commission. The new agency consists of Elizabethtown-Kitley and six other municipalities: Edwardsburgh Cardinal, Prescott, Augusta, Brockville, Front of Yonge and Leeds and the Thousand Islands. Each municipality contributes $4 per capita per year and has made a threeyear commitment. Beatty, CEO of Canarm, indicated that the commission has adopted a "stronger together" philosophy. The group is utilizing the strengths that each

of its members can provide as a way of dealing with what the chair acknowledged is the tough job of attracting new businesses to the area. Globalization has changed the business world, Beatty observed. Relocating production to China to take advantage of low labour costs there now provides about one-tenth of the advantage that it did when Canarm made the move in the 1970s. It's not the game-changer it was 40 years ago, Beatty remarked. Canarm is starting to reshore production to Canada, and the commission chair believes that many companies will be looking to do the same in the next 40 years. Many of the major businesses that have emerged in the Brockville area in recent years are locally owned and operated, Beatty noted. "The roots of these companies are a little bit deeper," stated Beatty, who added it's a strength that the region has to offer. Township committee member Blake McKim served as emcee at the luncheon. He pointed out that the committee's goal is to maintain a relationship with businesses in the municipality and to improve the local economy. Among other things, the group distributes a newsletter to more than 300 business four times a year.

Former NHL players to hit the ice in Brockville for CPHC Canada's game will be celebrated at a fun event that supports a local organization serving senior citizens. The Leeds and Grenville Charity Hockey Challenge will take place at the Brockville Memorial Centre on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. The exhibition game will include former NHL players as well as OHL alumni and local dignitaries and celebrities. Proceeds from the event will go to Community and Primary Health Care (CPHC), which offers multiple

programs and services that are aimed mostly at seniors who live in the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark area. The hockey challenge is being cochaired by MP Gord Brown, MPP Steve Clark and Brockville Mayor David Henderson. George Tackaberry and Gerald Tallman are serving as honorary chairs. The exhibition game consists of two 20-minute periods separated by a 20-minute intermission. NHL alumni who were confirmed recently

include Doug Smith, Rick Smith, Alyn McAuley and Shawn Rivers. OHL alumni Brandon Prophet, Brett Gibson, Kevin Grimes and Graeme Brown are also expected to hit the ice. On the political side, Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader Patrick Brown and former defence and foreign affairs minister Peter McKay will also be taking part in the exhibition game. The intermission will feature a short game involving local novice hockey players.

Admission is only $5 per person; tickets can be purchased at the door. The charity game on Oct. 19 will also be the last opportunity to purchase CPHC draw tickets, which are now on sale for $10 each; the winner will receive two economy-class return tickets to any Air Canada destination. The draw will be made during intermission. For more information about the draw of the event, call Crystal at 613342-3693, ext. 2072.

One of our most popular seasonal events is back. It's the Friends of Mac Johnson Wildlife Area Annual Fall Festival at the Mac Johnson Wildlife Area just north of Brockville. The outdoor party takes place on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features several fun activities for every member of the family. Enjoy the blazing and breathtaking fall colours, watch the waterfowl — including perhaps some trumpeter swans — on the reservoir in a canoe or kayak (courtesy of the CRCA), and enjoy live music. This year, there is an 'eyesonly' scavenger hunt and starting at 11 a.m. join a local wildlife expert for a guided hike to find recently sighted birds and animals. Young artists can also build a birdhouse and paint a rock monster. The friends group will also have a barbecue lunch available at the Nature Centre. After lunch, folks can make popcorn and toast marshmallows at the newly-renovated fire pit near the pond. For more information and updates on other special attractions on this exciting day, visit Facebook or www.crca.ca/events. Admission is $5 per vehicle. The Mac Johnson Wildlife Area is located on Debruge Road just east of Tincap. Turn at the lights on County Road 29 and drive for two kilometres to the main entrance. Sears leaves retail landscape in Brockville

The Sears store at 1000 Islands Mall in Brockville became a thing of the past on Sunday, Oct. 1. It was the last day of business at the former retail mainstay. The company announced in June that the Brockville store would be closing as part of a restructuring plan associated with a bankruptcy filing. Many shoppers were on hand to go through what little in the way of stock was still left on Sunday afternoon.

The Brockville and District Chamber of Commerce has named Doris Hallett as its 2017 Citizen of the Year. Hallett works (and has for many years) tirelessly on many different fundraising committees from palliative care, Brockville and District Hospital Foundation, to many Rotary events. She is quiet and works behind the scenes to help ensure successful events and fundraisers with little or no recognition, notes a chamber release. Hallett is a wife, mother of two, and grandmother of four. She lives by the “service beyond self ” mantra that represents one of the four way test filters of Rotary International. The execution of service projects and committee/board representation encompasses practically all segments of community, whether health care, recreational, social welfare, youth, seniors or spiritual outreach.

Hallett will be honoured at the Awards of Excellence Gala to be held at the Brockville Memorial Centre on Thursday, Nov. 9. Recipients of Business of The Year, Small Business of The Year, Community Excellence Award, and the Tourism award will be announced after dinner that night. The chamber has already announced that the Employment and Education Centre will receive the President's Award at the gala. The names of the 2017 businessperson and young professional of the year are also to be announced prior to the awards event. Chris Coyea was the 2016 Citizen of the Year. Doug Grant received the honour in 2015. The local chamber of commerce represents more than 400 members and has served as the Brockville community’s business advocate since 1906.

Buckle up or face a fine. That was the message being delivered by Leeds County OPP as part of the 2017 fall seatbelt campaign, which ran from Wednesday, Sept. 27 to Friday, Oct. 6. The annual drive targets drivers and occupants who are not buckled up; this also applies to child restraints. Provincial police officers continue to find children in danger because they are not properly strapped in or a booster seat has been installed incorrectly; a properly-used booster seat can reduce a child's risk of being injured in a

crash by as much as 75 per cent, according to a Leeds OPP news release issued on Tuesday. "Children are our future, and they deserve every protection we can give them," states Leeds OPP operations manager, Acting Staff Sgt. Josh Kingsley. "Please ensure that any child is properly secured while travelling in your vehicle." Seatbelt infractions in Ontario come with a fine totalling $240 as well as two demerit points. The provincewide campaign includes other OPP detachments.

Secondary students in Leeds-Grenville invited to apply for model parliament Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark is encouraging high school students interested in politics or who want an inside look at how legislation is passed at Queen’s Park to apply for the Legislative Assembly of Ontario’s Model Parliament program. Applications for the three-day program that’s open to Ontario students in grades 10 to 12 are being accepted until Oct. 30. Students selected to participate will be at Queen’s Park from Feb. 21-23, 2018. “It’s important to give young people an opportunity to get engaged in the political process, to see the impact it has on their day-today lives and develop a better understanding of how the system works,” Clark stated in a release. “The Model Parliament program is a great Kristine Geary’s

way to gain that insight and I know students who have represented Leeds-Grenville in previous years really valued the experience.” During the program, students have an opportunity to meet the key officials in the legislature, tour the building, learn about its history, and study the province’s legislative process. The highlight of the three days is when students take their seats in the Legislative Assembly Chamber to participate in a debate as the ‘MPP’ for their home riding. Clark has been honoured in past years to participate by serving as the Speaker for the simulated session of the assembly. Anyone interested in learning more about the program or applying can do so by visiting: http://discoveryportal.ontla.on.ca/en/youthprograms/model-parliament.

Harvest Festival in Delta was a success

We received a comment from a first time visitor to the festiThe Delta Mill Society expresses their heartfelt thanks val, “Enjoyed the old time atmosphere in the town and folks to all the volunteers who helped in any way to support the seemed to be milling about the Old Stone Mill like it was the third annual Harvest Festival. Without your help we could town square...” The motto of the Delta Mill Society is “instilling a pasnot have hosted a successful festival and we believe all who came enjoyed their visit to our lovely community of Delta. See Letter page 9 DEAR EDITOR:

Yes, this is space is being used once again in an effort to reduce the risk that you or someone close to you will become a victim of fraud or identity theft. These stories bear repeating, especially when significant amounts of money could be at stake. This sad tale of loss comes from the Georgian Bay area. Grey County OPP reported last week that two senior citizens in that area were taken for a total of about $25,000 in separate cases. One person got a telephone call from an unknown individual claiming that the woman's credit card had been compromised by a VISA employee. She was asked to assist with an internal investigation by sending money gram transfers. Unfortunately, the victim fell for the scam and sent multiple money grams and $13,000 in iTunes gift cards to India. The same scheme apparently netted another victim who sent money grams and gift card transfers overseas, according to OPP. It's easy for many of us to say we would never fall for such an obvious scam, but the bottom line is that there are people out there who are convinced that the caller or emailer is legit and opts to send money or provide personal information before someone in the know is able to talk them out of it. Some of these scammers can sound very convincing, which is why it is so important for law enforcement as well as family and friends to share these stories and to emphasize the need to be vigilant. No matter who or what the caller claims to represent, do not go along with requests for personal information or payments that are being made by someone you do not know. If you're smart enough to detect such a scam, then please share your insight and help enlighten others so they don't end up being the subject of the next fraud-related release from the police.

Mystery relative Ethel unexpectedly cuts her intended lengthy visit short Ethel was just one of the many people who came to visit the farm in Northcote, and no one was ever sure how she was connected to the family. The first time she came, suitcase in hand, Father said he never saw her before in his life. And certainly Mother, who hadn’t been on the farm that long, didn’t know who she was either. However, she came bag and baggage one day in the early Fall, claiming to be related on Father’s side of the family. She wasn’t about to give particulars, just saying, “we’re kin you know...and we go way back.” Ethel claimed to live in Pembroke. But Father said he was pretty sure he didn’t have any relatives there. However, none of that seemed to matter. Ethel was here, and she planned on staying. I was delighted. I loved company. The only problem was my sister Au-

It was soon pretty obvious to everyone Ethel hadn’t spent much time on a farm before coming out to Northcote. It was a warm day for Fall, and Mother had the kitchen window wide open, looking out onto the grape arbour. When we sat down for supper, Ethel wondered what that strong smell

What did you say your name was again?” “It’s Ethel, as you well know, Albert. And does that smell go away?” Father said, “Yes, when the snow comes.” Ethel just picked at her food, and more than once took her hanky out of her sleeve and covered her nose, pretending to wipe. And then there was the question of the Gerry pot under her bed. She had two choices, use it when the need arose during the night, or pick her way downstairs, out through the summer kitchen and over to the outhouse. She told Mother she couldn’t imagine anyone not having a bathroom with a flush-toilet. Of course, she also commented on the old copy of Eaton’s

Ethel was used to laying in bed in the morning, she told us when she climbed the stairs. Well, she was sure in for a surprise when Father could be heard in the kitchen starting the fire in the Findlay Oval the next morning. Mother said later, he did it on purpose. But he banged the stove lids, hit the poker against the wood box, and made so much noise you would have had to be stone deaf to sleep through the racket. Ethel had no choice but to get out of bed with the rest of us. It wasn’t a good start to the day. Ethel smoked cigarettes, which I thought gave her a touch of elegance. And after breakfast was cleared away, she headed outside, “To take

He was a mean one alright, and so he was seldom let out of the pen. He would chase anyone who came within a country mile of him, and he could run like the wind. Well, Ethel decided she had better get back to Pembroke, and if Father would just drive her to the station, she’d be on her way. To me, he seemed only too delighted to oblige. Her longstay visit lasted exactly one day and one night. When Father got back, Mother wondered how the old gobbler got out of the pen. What started as a 55th wedding anniversary grew into one of the best regular jamborees in Eastern Ontario, benefitting the Brockville General Hospital’s Palliative Care Program. Each July, the Patterson family organizes an amazing week-end of country music with returning campers and new visitors coming from as far away as Sudbury and North Bay to enjoy jamming. With so much talent, musicians and walk-ins jam with others in the Patterson barn, which has a stage, a 30x40 dance floor and a loft for the silent auction. On Saturday night, the popular barbecue dinner is offered for $20 and people must reserve in advance. This year, $1,500 was raised with income tax receipts issued. Seated, are Audrey Patterson (left) and BDHF Executive Director Joan Simon. Standing are Melanie Patterson, Dwayne Patterson, Brenda Kelly and Laurie Bell. Absent are Don Bell and Wayne Crate. Routine maintenance: what is needed, as well as what might not be A few weeks back, CBC’s Marketplace television show did a segment on dealership service departments that was less than flattering. But first some disclosure; I have spent the majority of my career working in the parts and service departments of authorized dealerships and continue to do so to this day. In case you missed this episode, it involved a consumer taking her newto-her 10-year-old Honda Civic into an authorized Toronto dealership for a routine service inspection. The vehicle received a thorough pre-check from an independent licensed technician, who gave it a clean bill of health with the exception of the need to replace the wiper blades and rotate the tires. CBC’s volunteer consumer then recorded exactly what the dealership’s service consultant recommended after completing a general ‘Peace of Mind’ inspection. As you might suspect (because it was the subject of a consumer affairs program) the service advisor suggested maintenance and repairs that the indie tech never thought was needed in the first place. They suggested the need to replace the rear brake shoes and drums along with a brake fluid flush. In another example, a CBC employee took his 2013 Jeep Wrangler into another Toronto dealership with

Car Counsellor BRIAN TURNER

less than 10,000 km on and received a full page of recommended maintenance items including spark plug replacement, air filter, fluid changes, and the list went on. The whole gist of the exercise was to point out the differences between what certain dealership service departments recommend for maintenance and what the factory owners’ manuals actually list. This issue is a main point of contention between vehicle owners and their selling dealerships and causes more grief than almost anything else in the industry. On one side, yes there are dealerships that upsell (recommend additional services) to the point of fraud and on the other side there are vehicle manufacturers that grossly understate their products’ needs for routine servicing to the point that they actually cause their customers more time and money. As an example, many vehicles today use platinum tipped spark plugs that have a reliable lifespan of up to 160,000 km.

Great, you might say, but if you bring an eight-year-old vehicle to your tech with 160,000 km on and ask for a spark plug replacement, the odds of getting them all out (no matter how carefully a tech might try) without breaking one, are extremely low. This will lead to additional labour costs and in some circumstances the need to replace a cylinder head at a very high cost. Only a few carmakers got smart and recommended that these plugs be inspected at 50,000 km intervals even when they’re designed to last three times that distance because a proper inspection would mean they’d be removed reducing the risk of them being seized and breaking when replacement time rolled around. When it comes to fluid replacements (another item brought up in the Marketplace piece) remember that automakers like to protect their own interests and if they list a transmission, for example, as having lifetime fluid (meaning no changes ever), in reality that’s for the life that the carmaker is responsible for under the terms of the warranty and not necessarily the consumers’ expectations. And as I’ve written many times before, having your engine’s oil changed only once a year or less means that no qualified tech will ever have a regular and timely look under the hood or under

the vehicle to check for critical items that you may never know are faulty until they break completely and leave you stranded on the side of the road or worse. The answer; take the time to build a good working relationship with your automotive service provider and (as Marketplace suggests) learn the details of your vehicle’s maintenance schedule by taking the few minutes needed to review your owner’s manual. Then, if your shop is suggesting something you don’t find in that book, ask questions and have the shop point out the benefits of completing that work or if it can be put off to a later date. After all, carmakers know that

Kathleen Wynne's Moving Company truck makes stop in Brockville TIM RUHNKE truhnke@metroland.com

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is hitting the road to deliver a message to communities throughout Ontario. The Kathleen Wynne’s Moving Company truck arrived in Brockville during late afternoon on Tuesday, Oct. 3. It was day one of a nine-day tour in which CTF is seeking public support for a campaign aimed at highlighting provincial government policies that the federation assets is making Ontario unaffordable for companies and households. The satirical moving company’s slogan painted on the side of the truck is “Helping Businesses and Families Leave Ontario.” Among the factors cited by CTF include the high cost of electricity and the increasing cost of labour as well as new taxes. CTF Ontario director Christine Van Geyn believes that the message resonates with many Ontarians, especially in a community such as Brockville that is or will be coping with the loss of a major employer. Van Geyn held a news conference beside Centennial Road near the P&G plant on Wednesday morning. P&G announced in May that its Brockville plant would close in late 2020 or early 2021. Although Van Geyn acknowledged in an interview on Tuesday that the

Christine Van Geyn, Canadian Taxpayers Federation Ontario director, brings the satirical Kathleen Wynne Moving Company truck to Centennial Road beside the P&G plant in Brockville on Tuesday, Oct. 3. The truck is touring the province to raise concerns about government policies that are making it difficult for businesses and households to survive in Ontario. Brockville was chosen as a tour stop because of the impending closure of the plant. multinational corporation’s decision might not have been based on specific policies of the current government, she indicated that the move is symptomatic of the economic climate in which businesses are having difficulty competing. She also pointed out the challenges that

Brockville and other centres are having or will have to fill shuttered plants or find alternate uses for them. “It’s not just about one plant closing,” Van Geyn said. CTF is trying to promote citizen engagement. Van Geyn is handing out

T-shirts as well as postcards addressed to the premier, asking people to send her a message to “stop the exodus.” There is also an online petition at wynnesmovingcompany.ca. She wants the government to hear what people really think. Ontarians

need to show the premier that “affordability really matters,” according to Van Geyn. The Brockville visit followed stops in Richmond Hill and Peterborough to open the campaign. Oct. 16 is to be the truck tour’s final day.

Fall Edition 2017

Cottage-style homes: and With the arrival of fall and its chillier days, the desire to remain bundled up at home often starts to take over. Do you wish to transform your interior into a comfortable and cozy space? Get inspired by cottage-style homes to infuse a touch of rustic appeal and warmth into your décor!

Varied textures

Hunting trophies What would an authentic cottage home be without game trophies on display? Decorate your walls with faux animal mounts (deer, moose, bear, bison, etc.) made out of wood, cardboard, metal or plaster for a perfectly rustic look and feel.

Warm colours

For a soft, soothing atmosphere that will make your home more inviting, opt for neutral shades inspired by nature. Prioritize muted tones like white, beige, light grey, pewter or even black for your walls, accessories and furniture. Additionally, consider including hints of forest green, burnt orange or dark red to add depth to your décor.

To create a cozy nest, opt for throw pillows made of felt, faux fur or wool. Natural fabrics like linen and cotton are equally suitable. Furthermore, choose hardwood furniture and accessories to create a look that’s 100 per cent authentic. When it comes to your walls and floors, don’t hesitate to mix concrete, wood and stone. Finally, pattern-wise, plaid and jacquard are perfect for achieving that cozy cottage feel. Indirect lighting — fixtures that direct light upward to bounce off the walls and ceiling (e.g. sconces) — is the key to achieving a cozy ambiance reminiscent of faraway ski chalets. Make sure you install dimmers to be able to adjust the brightness of the room to your liking. You can also add multiple candles — opt for fragrant varieties that smell like pine, cranberry or pumpkin, for example — and scatter strings of lights around your fireplace or windows to bring a festive touch to your interior.

We Are Neighbours exhibit travels throughout Leeds and Grenville TIM RUHNKE truhnke@metroland.com

It's a campaign aimed at celebrating diversity in the Leeds and Grenville area. The We Are Neighbours exhibit was launched at the Brockville Public Library on Wednesday, Sept. 13. The St. Lawrence — Rideau Immigration Partnership project is aimed at sharing the stories of the some of the people who chose the region to be their new home. About seven per cent of the residents of the Leeds Grenville area are immigrants who were not born in Canada but have been granted the right to live here permanently. About 40 countries are represented in the local population. Seven immigrants had shared their stories for the campaign at the launch event. Melissa Francis, the partnership's program manager, believes the project and travelling exhibit provide new perspectives to local residents. "We start to see things differently," she said, Tim Ruhnke/Metroland adding "it doesn't mean we're giving up who we We Are Neighbours campaign participant Reverend Takouhi Demirdjian-Petro speaks at are." the exhibit launch held at the Brockville Public Library on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Two of the participants in We Are Neighbours spoke at the launch event. Reverend Takouhi Demirdjian-Petro serves as a United Church minister in Portland and Elgin. She and her mother and two sisters arrived in Montreal in 1986, fleeing the civil war in Lebanon. "Compassion, care and community are not optional in life," she commented. "No one can live in a bubble."

MAKE YOUR MOVE INTO A CADILLAC AT MIKE FAIR’S 2017 CLEARANCE ON NOW

Ben Mukherjee lived in the United States for more than 20 years before moving to Canada. "The most important thing is what you do with it," he told the gathering. "Everything is within our control." Other campaign participants are in Brockville, Prescott, North Augusta, Merrickville and North Grenville. Also on hand at the launch was Brockville Mayor David Henderson, a major supporter of local immigration and refugee initiatives. Henderson welcomes projects such as We Are Neighbours because they embrace newcomers and " ... make them feel like it's their community." The travelling exhibit includes photos and an interactive engagement board on which the public can comment on what makes a good neighbour. We Are Neighbours was on display at the Brockville library until the end of September. The other venues include Brockville Culture Days (Sept. 30), North Grenville Public Library in Kemptville (Nov. 27-Dec. 8) and various public library branches in Rideau Lakes (October to early November), Gananoque Public Library (Nov. 6-11), YMCA of Brockville and Area (Nov. 18-26), and Gananoque Visitor Centre (Nov. 12-17). Vivianne White is co-ordinator of the project. Regular updates are posted on the partnership's Facebook page (LGimmigration). Safety measures for winter drivers

Winter weather causes many people to retreat indoors until the spring thaw. However, for those who embrace the cooler temperatures or find that life must go on despite snow and ice, taking inventory of their vehicles is a must before the first snowflakes start to fall. Tire care is an especially important area of vehicle maintenance. Regular tires may be ineffective for winter driving. Summer tires are made from materials that are optimized for warm conditions. When the mercury drops, these same materials can harden, reducing their ability to grip the road. That lack of traction can be compounded by the presence of snow or ice. Even all-season tires, which are designed to be driven year-round, can be insufficient in severe weather conditions. Winter tires can help drivers safely navigate winter roadways. It’s important to look for tires that can disperse water sufficiently and also grip the road. Snow tires are designed to remain softer and more flexible to conform to the road better in cold conditions. Some winter tires are even studded to provide better traction.

Unfortunately, even the best winter tires cannot provide perfect traction on slippery roadways. That is why it is essential — in conjunction with the use of winter tires or snow chains — to modify driving techniques to navigate safely. DRIVE SLOWLY Allow a greater distance for stopping than for dry conditions. Slippery conditions can make it more challenging to stop, and excessive speeds can make the situation worse. SHIFT INTO LOW GEAR On hills, rely on low gears to maximize traction to travel up and down hills. This can minimize skids or sliding. GET THE VEHICLE A TUNEUP In addition to tires, be sure the braking system, battery and other major components of the vehicle are in good working order.

Winter weather requires making some vehicle modifications, and drivers may want to alter the way they drive to be more safe on the road.

REPLACE WINDSHIELD WIPERS Reduced visibility can compromise the safety of drivers and their passengers. Replace windshield wiper blades before winter arrives. Consider purchasing winter-rated windshield blades. KNOW HOW TO RECOVER FROM A SKID When skids occur on black ice or slush, drivers should take their feet off of the pedals and steer gently in the direction they want to go. As the vehicle regains traction, only then should the brakes or accelerator be applied.

Autumn means different things to many people. Students may embrace the dawn of a new school year, while others might embrace the crisp weather after a season of heat. One of the more widely enjoyed aspects of autumn is the chance to take in the brilliant foliage. Dazzling displays of foliage can be witnessed anywhere temperatures descend enough for deciduous trees to shed their leaves.

The first step to a successful fall foliage excursion is to find the right spot. To make the most of fall foliage road trips, drivers can keep the following suggestions in mind. GET OFF THE HIGHWAY To see great fall vistas, take a detour from major thoroughfares and visit small towns and mountain passes. Invest in some maps, as cellular networks may be inaccessible in remote locales. AVOID TOURIST-HEAVY AREAS Drivers may prefer less crowded roadways to accompany the great scenery. Such drivers should visit areas that are not tourist meccas. Any area that plays home to forests and sprawling landscapes will do. GO ON FOOT To get the best photos, head out at sunrise or sunset. Soft, golden light dappled by leaves will bring out the golden tones in photos. Going on foot will help you discover the nuances of the season and slow down for a change. DON’T OVERLOOK OVERCAST DAYS Traveling in the rain may not be fun, but overcast days might be ideal. On such days, the sun won’t be too warm and drown out the colours.

BRING ALONG BINOCULARS Wildlife is often mobile and abundant in the fall, as animals scurry to feed and gather supplies before the winter. As a result, fall is a great time to spot wildlife that’s normally hiding in thickets and woodland areas. PLAN FOR STOPS ALONG THE WAY Don’t forget to bring some spending money in the form of cash so that you can enjoy the small farm stands and shops that often dot rural landscapes. Pick up farm-fresh produce or choose a plump pumpkin. Yard sales also are abundant this time of year. Trees begin shedding their leaves as early as the beginning of September in Canada. As the days press on, the fall finery will gradually shift southward. For those who can afford to take a weekday off, do so, as weekends might be overcome with fellow enthusiasts.

5 simple towing tips for novices Drivers may haul trailers for a variety of reasons. Some may haul trailers on vacation, while others may do so when moving to a new home. Regardless of why drivers tow, it’s important to keep certain things in mind before hitching up, especially for those drivers will little or no experience towing. 1. USE THE RIGHT HITCH Novices may not immediately recognize if they have purchased an incorrectly sized hitch, but that might become apparent when the trailer is detached during a ride. Your vehicle owner’s manual may suggest which size hitch to use. If not, consult with a representative at your local auto parts retailer to determine the correct size. CONTINUED ON PAGE 20…

5 SIMPLE TOWING TIPS FOR NOVICES 2. MAKE SURE THE TRAILER IS LEVEL When attached to a vehicle, trailers should be level. Trailers that do not appear level or those that seem to be rising up and down on otherwise flat roadways should be inspected if not brought to the attention of a mechanic. 3. DRIVE MORE CAREFULLY Discomfort or inexperience may propel many drivers to be extra careful when towing a trailer, but even drivers with significant experience towing trailers should keep greater distance between their vehicles and other cars and trucks sharing the road. That’s because braking takes longer for heavier vehicles, such as those towing trailers. 4. PRACTICE TURNS Turning is complicated when towing a trailer. Beginning a turn later can help drivers avoid having their trailers clip curbs, a potentially sticky situation that can cause trailers to flip over. 5. AVOID REVERSING WHEN POSSIBLE Many people towing trailers for the first time and even some drivers with significant experience towing have difficulty going in reverse. Avoiding situations that require putting vehicles in reverse is ideal for novices. Those who think they cannot avoid going in reverse should practice their technique in empty parking lots before hitting the road, even hiring an instructor to help them, if necessary.

Thousand Islands Playhouse names managing artistic director Thousand Islands Playhouse (TIP) has named Brett Christopher as its managing artistic director. Christopher is well-known to TIP audiences and stakeholders, having performed both on stage and in a range of administrative positions, such as marketing director, associate artist, and most recently, general manager. “In his most recent role, he has brought significant stability to the company, built strong relationships with staff, strengthened relationships with key donors and raised the profile of TIP in the community,” board chair Lynda Garrah stated in a release issued on Sept. 29. “That, combined with his extensive artistic experience on Canadian stages, proved to us that he was an ideal person to lead the organization into the future.” After working in Toronto for a decade, Christopher returned home to Kingston, where he became a driving force in the region’s arts community as artistic producer of Theatre Kingston. Along with producing a three-show season annually, Christopher sat on multiple boards, worked with a variety of local cultural groups, and founded both The Kick Photo by Tim Forbes and Push Festival and the Storefront Brett Christopher is the managing artistic director of Fringe Festival.

Thousand Islands Playhouse in Gananoque.

“I am honoured and humbled to take on the leadership of this incredible company,” said Christopher. “Over the past 20 years, I have been audience, artist and administrator at the playhouse, and I plan to use all of that shared history to develop a vibrant and vital plan for the company’s bright future. Having lived and worked in the region for the last decade, I understand the many challenges that are ahead. However, I am eager to jump in and establish the company as a leading voice for culture in the area.” Christopher completed his undergraduate studies at Queen’s University and has been an active member of the Canadian theatre community since graduating from George Brown College’s theatre program in 2001. He has worked with a variety of theatre companies across Canada as an actor, director and producer. He takes over artistic leadership from Ashlie Corcoran, who is stepping down from her position in order to take on the role of artistic director at the highly touted Arts Club Theatre Company in Vancouver. TIP is grateful for her contributions over the last five years, during a time of artistic and organizational growth for the company, the release indicated.

Casino and cocktail evening will support St. John Ambulance Enjoy a night out while giving community services a boost. The second annual casino and cocktail evening in support of St. John Ambulance in Leeds-Grenville and Lanark will take place at 1000 Islands Village (the former Grenville Christian College) on County Road 2 just west of Maitland on Friday, Oct. 20 from 6 to 11 p.m. In addition to gaming tables and funny money, the licensed event at the refurbished facility includes roast beef dinner as well as live music by The Fabulous Belairs. There will also be live and silent auctions. Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark is honorary chair of the event. Although black-tie dress is suggested, guests are being encouraged to don their 1950s best to go with the theme of the evening. Proceeds support the branch that is based in Brockville but serves a wide area. Medical first response volunteers with the local St. John Ambulance brigade are present at many community events throughout the year. In addition to first aid training, the branch provides child car-seat and therapy dog programs as well as a cadet program in the tri-county area. Event tickets are $100 each; a tax receipt for $70 is available. Brockvegas for a Cause tickets must be purchased in advance. They are available at St. John House located just west of Perth Street near the downtown Brockville fire hall. Call 613-342-2974. The inaugural casino event for the local St. John Ambulance brigade was held at the Aquatarium last fall.

Latest Lego movie has plenty of heartfelt silliness; youngsters and adults will enjoy MOVIE: Lego Ninjago STARRING: Jackie Chan, Dave Franco, Fred Armisen, Kumail Nanjiani, Michael Pena, Abbi Jacobson, Zach Woods, Olivia Munn and Justin Theroux DIRECTORS: Charlie Bean, Paul Fisher and Bob Logan RATING: G I love these Lego movies. Any movie I can take my kids to, and enjoy it just as much as they do is great in my book. The land of Ninjago is a land of mysticism and technological wonders. Yet the city is under constant threat of attack by the evil Lord Garmadon (Justin Theroux). Every day Garmadon and his army strike out at Ninjago from his volcanic island base. And each day the five mysterious ninja in their fierce robotic mechs stop him. High school students by day and ninjas whenever Garmadon attacks. Kai (Michael Pena) is the Fire Ninja, and his sister Nya (Abbi Jacobson) is the Water Ninja. Cole (Fred Armisen) is the Rock Ninja, Zane (Zach Woods) is the Ice Ninja, and Jay (Kumail Nanjiani) is the Lightning Ninja. They're led by Lloyd (Dave Franco) the Green Ninja, and taught by Master Wu

My Take

MARK HASKINS

(Jackie Chan). Life as a secret ninja isn't easy, but for Lloyd it's even harder. As the Green Ninja, Lloyd is loved by all, but as son of the evil Garmadon, he's hated. Then one day Garmadon comes at them with a giant mechanized suit of shark-themed destruction. Lloyd, desperate to stop his father, unleashes the ultimate weapon Meowthra, but he can't control it. Garmadon seizes control, and watches as Meowthra destroys the city. To save Ninjago, Lloyd and the ninja must undertake a perilous journey for the ultimate weapon. They'll be tested like never before, and Lloyd will have to face his relationship with his father. Ninjago is an action-packed film filled with some amazing Lego martial arts excitement. It also has a lot of tongue-in-cheek humour. One of the things I enjoy is how much they

push the humour — from outright silliness and making fun of themselves, to classic slapstick and some pretty clever one-liners. It's the kind of film that gets everyone in the theatre laughing. The real charm of the film though is its ability to pivot. It gracefully goes from the outrageousness of absentee father and evil warlord Garmadon to plucking at the heartstrings as Lloyd and his father reconnect. Our cast is not the original voice actors of the TV show, but they're pretty good. It's hard to be upset when Jackie Chan is cast to voice the ninja master and teacher Master Wu. Then we have Fred Armisen, Kumail Nanjiani, Michael Pena, Abbi Jacobson, Zach Woods and Olivia Munn. Again, it's hard to be upset with this kind of talent. The focus of the story is on Lloyd and Garmadon, and Dave Franco and Justin Theroux are great. They go way over the top to be funny but are still able to have that touching fatherson moment. Ninjago is full of silly goodness, but it also has some real heart. That's the beauty of these Lego movies. Mark Haskins’ column is a regular feature.

CCHL2: Athens to host Brockville on Saturday night The Central Junior Hockey League Tier 2 regular season is entering its second month. The Athens Aeros defeated the Richmond Royals 4-2 at Centre 76 on Saturday, Sept. 30. Glynn Robitaille gave the Aeros an early 2-0 lead in the first period, with Eric Hulford scor-

second stars respectively. The victory followed a 5-4 road loss in Renfrew on Friday, Sept. 29. The Aeros managed to tie that game three times, but the Timberwolves were able to snag the lead for a fourth and final time in the third period and hold on for the home win. Theo Todd scored twice for Athens, Shawn Patterson and Jacob Servage picked up singles. Goalie Aiden Ethier made 34 saves in the loss and was named the game's third star. Athens (4-4-1-0 entering play last weekend) will travel to Perth to take on the Blue Wings Chinese Simplified, and Farsi. this Friday, Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. The Aeros will The curriculum documents offer guidelines as then host the Brockville Tikis at Centre 76 on to what children must know and be able to do at Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7:30. the end of the grade level or course level. Teachers recognize that there are differences in children's physical and mental development, even within the same grade, so they are able to access resources to help students reach their potential. Parents can help by working with the teachers to make sure children are receiving the best help they can at home. To help with this, parents can visit the Virtual Learning Commons, which is an online resource, at http://vlc.ucdsb.ca/vlchome On the website, it is described as follows: "The VLC is much more than an 'online library.' It provides Information Literacy, Digital Literacy, Media Literacy, and Digital Citizenship resources, as well as technical help and reliable information for student research and work." Resources are divided into three sections for students at different levels: K-6, 7-8, 9-12. Whether it is from these resources, Parent Councils or the Parent Involvement Committee (PIC), the UCDSB has many ways for parents to be engaged with their children's education, and will feel more comfortable knowing "What is My Child Learning?" Learn more about the PIC, visit https://www. facebook.com/UCDSB.PIC/ ing what would prove to be the game-winning goal at 13:46 of the middle frame. Many ways for parents to engage in child's education: UCDSB series Editor's note: This is part of a series of articles by Christine Peets, writer in residence for the Upper Canada District School Board Parent Involvement Committee (UCDSB-PIC). As children are now a month into the new school year, parents may be breathing a sigh of relief knowing that the lazy days of summer have given way to the busy days of fall and winter, and that children are firmly back to their routines — and their learning. Although, learning never does take a holiday, as we saw in a previous article on the benefits that kids gain from summer activities. Parents may also be concerned about what their children will be learning, and how the programs laid out by the Ontario Ministry of Education (MOE) will be implemented by the UCDSB. To get some more information on that, the MOE has laid out a series of articles on the Parents page on its website at http://www.edu. gov.on.ca/eng/parents/curriculum.html. There are a number of documents for both the Elementary Curriculum and the Secondary Curriculum. There are also documents for those who are Learning in French. The latter are broken down further because there are two streams: French in English-language schools, and French-language education. It is important to the ministry and to the UCDSB that the mandate to "protect, transmit and enhance French language and culture" is met. Health is also an important part of the curriculum at both the elementary and secondary level. The Health and Physical Education curriculum for grades 1 through 12 has been revised, and there are guidelines on the ministry's website for parents to review. There are also guidelines of what children will learn about Human Development and Sexual Health in the primary and middle school years, Grades 1 through 6, and another document outlining the programs for Grades 7 through 12. To meet the needs of a diverse population, the guides are available in English, French, Polish, Urdu, Punjabi, Arabic, Chinese Traditional,

The Tikis hosted Renfrew on Wednesday, Oct. 4 and lost 6-1. The Timberwolves outshot the home team 45-38. Brockville travelled to Westport on Friday, Sept. 29 and lost 4-1. The Rideaus outshot the Tikis 51-27. Brockville hosted Perth on Wednesday, Sept. 27, and fell 7-4 to the Blue Wings, who outshot the home team 47-27. Brockville (2-7-0-0 after the Oct. 4 game) host Whitewater – the former Prescott Flyers franchise that was relocated to Cobden – at the memorial centre on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 8 p.m. The Tikis will then take on Arnprior in Brockville on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m.
