It gives entrepreneurs a chance to connect and to share their experiences. Bridges to Better Business 2017 was held in Brockville on Thursday, Oct. 26. The annual event is organized by the Leeds Grenville Small Business Enterprise Centre. In addition to networking and guest speakers, the one-day gathering included the presentation of three awards recognizing small business successes in the united counties area. Sue Torrance, owner of Tasty Indulgence, received the Entrepreneur of the Year honour. From her desire to support family members and friends who have health issues relating to food, Torrance created a business starting with sweets that were glutenfree and diabetic-friendly, evolving into one that also prepares and distributes main courses plus tortiere, soups and salads that are now available at a number of local retailers. "I didn't get here alone," she commented after being handed the award. "I definitely will pay it forward." Wendy Onstein, manager of the enterprise centre, noted that Torrance is collaborating with other femaleowned businesses and has started Prescott Women in Business. “He had a gift for helping young people,” Onstein said. Paul’s father Leo, brother Mitch and husband, Mike Laking, were among family and friends on hand for the presentation. Olajos, who operated a landscaping business as part of Summer Company in 2012, went on to study business in university and develop apps. UP360 Media, which builds web platforms for businesses and includes videos featured on social media, is his latest project. The award recipient was described by Onstein as driven and passionate but approachable. She recalled turning down the youngster’s Summer Company application in 2010 because “his idea was too big.” That didn’t stop the teen from pursuing the business on his own, according to Onstein. In accepting the award, Olajos noted that Boivin definitely had a strong influence and impact. Olajos, who has also served as a mentor to Summer Company participants, indicated he wouldn’t be where he is today without the help of enterprise centre officials and others who have supported him
along the way. He returned home each summer to run 1000 Islands Landscaping; Olajos sold his shares in the company this year. Magician Rylan Schwarze received the young entrepreneur honour in 2016. Also at Bridges to Better Business, Khasif Riaz was presented with the third annual Immigrant Entrepreneur Award. The owner of Computer Liquidators arrived in Canada from Pakistan in 1999 and moved to Brockville in 2001. Riaz was credited with persevering and expanding his business, which now includes providing IT support to a significant manufacturer in the South Grenville area. He was also recognized for being a community contributor as a YMCA volunteer and soccer coach as well as with the local Muslim community. His nominator described Riaz as a quiet and behind-the-scenes leader. “Everyone in the Brockville community has been very helpful,” Riaz told the audience after receiving the award. The honour is presented by the St. Lawrence-Rideau Immigration Partnership in association with a number

Hospital names its next chief of staff The Little Irishman Portable Sheds Dr. Rob Malone will serve as chief of staff at Brockville General Hospital (BGH), it was announced on Tuesday, Oct. 24. Dr. David Goldstein had indicated in late September that he decided to retire from the position. BGH developed a search committee, led by Kevin Empey, BGH’s provincially-appointed supervisor, and included medical leadership and representatives from the hospital’s new board of directors. The chief of staff reports to the board of directors, and oversees all medical departments and staff, including divisions that have chiefs as well. BGH has 11 medical departments, including anesthesia, diagnostic imaging, emergency, internal medicine, family medicine/ hospitalist, women and children’s program, pathology, psychiatry, rehab medicine, critical care and surgery. Dr. Malone has a long-standing history with the hospital, according to a BGH release. He has been the chief of psychiatry and member of the medical advisory committee at BGH since 2000. He has shown strong leadership in hospital initiatives, including accreditation, a computer physician order entry (CPOE) pilot project, the credentialing process and support in many regional initiatives. In addition to leading over 16 presentations and participating in over 21 conferences on mental Health and health care issues, he has received a multitude of awards. Most recently, Malone received the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching award from Queen’s Department of Psychiatry in 2016. In 2014, he was the keynote speaker at the hospital’s annual general meeting and in 2013 he was nominated by BGH staff for the Workplace Happiness Action Team’s Team Member of the Year award. "For over 17 years, I have worked with the medical, clinical and administrative teams at BGH," Malone stated.

Dr. Rob Malone will succeed Dr. David Goldstein as chief of staff at Brockville General Hospital. "Despite the challenges we have faced, I am excited and energized by this new opportunity and look forward to helping BGH reach its full potential." Dr. Malone and Dr. Goldstein will be working closely over the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition. Malone officially takes over the position on Nov. 6. Hospital board co-chair Jim Cooper noted that the recent appointment "... marks a renewed focus and commitment to the BGH’s medical departments. Working with Nick Vlacholias, president and CEO, and the board of directors, we anticipate a bright future for BGH."

Start time change sure to brighten Christmas parade in Brockville MONICA MROZ
The MyQuit program is designed to support anyone interested in quitting smoking or cutting back their tobacco use. The program is free of charge and is delivered by our coaches who are trained in the latest techniques to help you successfully stop smoking. moi j’écrase est un programme gratuit s’adressant à toute personne qui souhaite arrêter de fumer ou réduire sa consommation de tabac. Il est animé par des mentors qui maîtrisent les plus récentes techniques visant à arrêter de fumer.
Visions of sugar plums and sleighs full of toys, and St. Nicholas too, will be reflected in the brilliance of twinkling lights at this year’s edition of the Brockville Santa Claus Parade. With its “Twas the Night Before Christmas” theme, the city’s popular parade that unwraps the beginning of the holiday season moves to a new early-evening time slot. A 5 p.m. start for the Saturday, Nov. 25, parade is a winning situation for everyone, says parade chair Josh Bennett. In describing an illuminated parade experience as magical, he added “there’s something about an evening parade that makes it very special,” said Bennett, who is also past-president of the Rotary Club of Brockville, which, along with the Rotary Club of the Thousand Islands, has been organizing the parade for about 12 years. Two forces came together to drive the change from the traditional 2 p.m. start, he explained. In a season in which so many businesses depend on shopping traffic to stay strong, the parade cancelled one of last few Saturdays available prior to the big day itself. “Every Saturday and Sunday really count” in the business community, Bennett said. After 1:30 in the afternoon on parade day, “no shopping was happening anywhere in the city because everyone was at the parade,” Bennett explained. In noting that informal surveys and chatting with families and parents also indicated a desire
for an evening parade, Bennett added that everyone is “super excited” about the change. “Virtually everyone with kids thinks it’s wonderful.” “It’s more business friendly and it’s what families wanted,” Bennett said. The new start time also allows organizers and participants to set up while it is still light, and then watch the magic happen from the sparkling and colourful lights. Rotary organizers are looking forward to seeing the new creativity with float decorations that can now take full advantage of the lighting element. Brockville’s decision to move to an evening parade follows a trend with other regional municipalities, Bennett said. “Prescott’s parade is magnificent,” he said of the community to the east that has organized a nighttime Christmas parade for about two decades. Gananoque also offers an evening parade. The parade travels the same route as in previous years: it heads west down Pearl Street from the corner of North Augusta Road; south on Park Street; and west on King Street to end at Leon’s parking lot. The 12-member Brockville parade organizing committee expects about 70 floats, along with four marching bands. The Brockville Fire Department and others will be collecting nonperishable food, toys and money to donate to the Brockville and Area Food Bank and local Salvation Army. Parade participants can register at rotarybrockville.ca.

Christmas craft show set for high school in Gananoque this weekend The Rotary Club of Gananoque is pleased to present its 34th annual Christmas Craft Show at Gananoque Intermediate Secondary School on Saturday, Nov. 4 and Sunday, Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. More than 50 per cent of this year's vendors are new registrations to this popular November craft show, according to a release. These new ven-
dors offer many interesting, unique items. Rotary has now stopped taking registrations for 2017 with a total of 115 crafters participating, making this show one of the largest shows in eastern Ontario. All proceeds go back into the community, such as the latest Canada 150 project: the recently dedicated warming room at the recreation centre.
Also new to the Gananoque craft show this year is live entertainment with Tim Halliman to add to the festive activities. Delicious hot pot pie and salad, along with homemade sandwiches, muffins and doughnuts will give you that extra burst of energy to complete early holiday shopping. Make sure to look for the special display of birdhouses for sale in the
front lobby. These special birdhouses were a donation from Rotarian Judy Froelich of the Rotary Club of Cincinnati to the local club. A warm sunny day a month ago saw 14 Rotarians whip out their brushes and show their creativity by painting and decorating 18 unique, one of a kind birdhouses to be sold for $35 each with all the proceeds going to the food bank’s annual
Christmas baskets. Rotary had lots of fun doing this worthwhile project and demonstrated Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self.” Anyone interested in learning more about Rotary, contact any Rotarian or go to rotaryclubofgananoque.com. Rotary now meets twice a month at noon at the Gananoque Curling Club. Guests are welcome.
OPP offer tips on how to reduce risk of vehicle-deer collisions Slow down, stay alert and stay in control. That's part of the message being delivered by Leeds County OPP in the wake of nine vehicle-deer collisions to which the detachment responded this past week. No humans were injured in those crashes, according to a release. Provincial police say drivers can take measures to minimize the chances of being involved in such collisions and reduce the risk of being injured. Motorists should be especially attentive from sunset to midnight and just before and just after sunrise, the OPP advise. Drivers should use high-beam headlights when driving in the dark when there is no oncoming traffic. Police recommend slowing down and blowing the horn with one long blast to scare away deer on or beside a roadway. Brake firmly but stay in the lane if there is a deer in or near the vehicle's path; serious crashes sometimes occur when a vehicle swerving to avoid hitting a deer strikes another vehicle or goes out of control, according to the release. Deer seldom run alone; if one is noticed, there might be others nearby.
Most people who are injured in vehicle-deer collisions were not wearing their seatbelts, the OPP release states. A collision with a deer or other animal in Ontario must be reported to police if any humans are injured or if damage to the vehicle appears to exceed $2,000, the OPP say.

COMMENTARY Sticker shock remains As much as it's nice not to have to pay for a Drive Clean test these days, there's still a lingering odour associated with the annual licence plate sticker renewal fee hikes with which Ontarians had to deal over the course of several years. Perhaps it can be argued that paying $120 for the privilege of operating a vehicle for one year is reasonable, and maybe we should be thankful there is no price hike this year or next. We once again note the efficient service offered at the privately run Service Ontario outlet in downtown Prescott. And in fairness to the government, we acknowledge that the time it takes to actually renew a sticker in person has definitely decreased — assuming all of the information needed to complete the transaction is readily available, of course. One of the customers who was in the short lineup when the outlet opened on Saturday morning observed that motorists are actually paying more for the privilege of keeping their vehicles on the road. The drive clean fee of $30 plus tax is no longer paid by the vehicle owner every two years, but that is offset by the amounts by which the sticker renewals have increased. We've stated it before and we're going to mention it yet again: most Ontarians are willing to pay reasonable rates for goods and services and accept price hikes if and when they can be justified. Many of us are unable to comprehend how hiking sticker renewals by $46 over a five-year period is fair. Unless the province can demonstrate that charging $74 in 2012 was woefully inadequate, the obvious conclusion that can be drawn is that the multiple Tim Ruhnke/Metroland increases add up to nothing more than a tax grab. Father believed there was always a solution for everything It had been a hot summer. Many times Mother said how grateful she was that Grampa had bought us a Barnett icebox. Oak, it was. And it filled a whole corner in the kitchen. It meant we could keep our food from spoiling, and the ice it held from the icehouse could be chipped and put into well water for a cold drink on a hot day. But as summer turned into Fall, and the days got shorter, and even though it was much colder, it was still a long time before the Bonnechere would be frozen, and more ice brought into the icehouse. And so it was that Fall day, when Father said we had to be careful, or we would run out of ice before the winter set in. The youngest of us were not allowed in the icehouse in the hot summer, just in case we let in the heat. Everything was done to keep the big blocks frozen solid. The little black building was built

on the north side of the barn to protect it as much as possible from the sun, and wagonload after wagonload of sawdust was dragged from the sawmill to cover the ice. The big black tongs hung on a spike outside the building, and only Audrey or Father were the ones to bring a block into the icebox when needed. And now, Father said, it looked like we might run out of ice before the Bonnechere froze over. Now, the block in the Barnett was allowed to melt until there was nothing to prove it had ever been there. My job was to empty the basin of wa-

ter that piped down when the ice melted, and I was both glad and anxious when it now had to be done only every second day. Glad that I didn’t have to worry about the water filling the pan and spilling out on the floor through my neglect, but anxious, wondering where we would put our food when the icehouse was empty. And the Fall dragged on. The leaves had turned, fallen, were raked up, and burned. And each day was sunny and warm, but with frosty nights, telling us soon we would be blocked in with drifts of snow and impassable roads, but cutting ice in the river still a long way off. Mother, I knew, was worried. More than once she said to my sister Audrey, “Take the smallest blocks of ice first.” And then suddenly the weather changed. We got up one morning to temperatures that had dropped through the night, chilling the very

rafters of the house. Father had stoked the Findlay Oval as always before going to bed, but by morning it had burned down, and we knew, as soon as our feet hit the floor, the nice Fall days were over. It would just be a matter of time before winter would close in around us. But February, which was usually the month Father took ice from the river, was still months away. I worried every day that we would run out of ice, our food would spoil, and my entire family would either die of starvation or food poisoning. But Father didn’t seem to be that worried. He, as always, had a solution...one that had been used on that farm for three generations. Out in the summer kitchen was an old table that held cans of paint, bits and pieces of wood, and other things, which didn’t seem to have a home. Father moved it to the centre of the floor, took four empty tin cans, filled

them with coal oil, and put one under each leg. Mother covered it with a worn piece of oilcloth, and that table became our “icebox.” Mother whose concern was that a mouse would get onto our food, was assured by Father, that no mouse could climb a table leg over a can of coal oil. And so leftovers were wrapped in wax paper, then in many layers of the Renfrew Mercury, and taken out to the summer kitchen, where they either froze or were kept well chilled until used in a meal. No longer did we have to worry about running out of ice from the icehouse. There were still a few blocks left for chipping into a glass of well water, but the big oak Barnett lay idle, its shelves empty, but its big door left ajar to air out until once again, it would be filled with a block of ice from the Bonnechere. Father was right. If you use your head, there is a solution for just about everything.

Brockville Public Library now offers many virtual reality experiences BRITTANY CASSELL bcassell@metroland.com
The Brockville Public Library has launched its new Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) technology. Several members of the community gathered at the library on Buell Street on Thursday afternoon (Oct. 26) to see what it’s like to experience a virtual world. Scott Fraser, chief of the Brockville Police Service and vice-chair of the Brockville and Area Community Foundation, was also present to demonstrate the new virtual reality technology. Fraser, who previously received the required training to use the technology, rode a virtual roller-coaster to demonstrate the surprisingly realistic simulated world in which users experience when they put on the VR headset. “It reminded me of the time my kids conned me into going on one (a real roller-coaster). I think in one
breath I screamed the entire route,” he recollected. “It feels very realistic.” As the chief sat in the chair riding the virtual roller-coaster, he would begin to grip the chair each time a drop approached, further demonstrating the completely immersive, realistic virtual world users enter. A three-dimensional, computergenerated world in which an individual uses a headset, computer, sensors, and hand controllers to temporarily escape into another reality may sound daunting for some, but for others, it sounds thrilling. For the more placid user, though, the library has other virtual reality experiences available for use, including tours of never-before-seen Chernobyl disaster sites, visiting the Bahamas, and even a trip to outer space. The technology is open to anyone with a library card. But there is required training that must be complet-
ed before use is permitted. Library staff direct those who wish to use the VR technology to first visit the Brockville Public Library’s website and watch the three-minute tutorial that explains how to use the equipment. A waiver must then be submitted to the library before booking a training session with one of the library staff,
who will then demonstrate the technology one on one. The library’s virtual reality technology was made possible by a $5,000-grant partnership, the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th, between the Government of Canada and the Brockville and Area Community Foundation. Members of the commu-

nity can also “Adopt-an-Experience,” which means purchasing a specific virtual reality experience for the library, all while gaining personal first-time access to use the title purchased. For more information and to view training session times: http://www. brockvillelibrary.ca/virtualreality. htm.

Go purple and show support: Interval House Leeds and Grenville Interval House (LGIH) is shining a light on violence in the united counties area. November is Woman Abuse Awareness Month. The City of Brockville is leading the way by proclaiming “Shine the Light Month” and flying campaign flags behind city hall and in front of the Brockville police station. Join Interval House in shining a light by lighting the porch with a purple light or stringing purple lights in windows or trees. "Stand with abused women and let them know you care," a release states. The goals of the month-long campaign are to raise awareness of men’s violence against women by turning cities across the country purple for the month of November; to stand in solidarity with abused women and support them in understanding that any shame and/or blame they may feel as a result of the abuse they are experiencing (or have experienced) does not belong to them but to the perpetrator of their abuse; and to raise the profile of community agencies that can provide abused women with help as they attempt to live their lives free from violence and abuse. LGIH has purple LED Light bulbs for sale to use in porch light or lamps. Cost is $6 each. They are available at the shelter and River Lily Boutique in Brockville. Contact Kimberley at LGIH (613-342-4724 ext. 104) to find out about purchasing Shine the Light lanterns and strings of battery-operated LED lights as well. Best Management Practices for Drinking Water Threats: Septic Systems Get to Know Your Septic System: • Know the location of your septic tank and what sort of material it is made from. • Know the size and shape of your leaching bed. Maintain Your Septic System Properly: • Have your septic system inspected at least every three years. • Pump your septic tank as needed (generally every three to five years). • Have the tank replaced if not sound (e.g. steel tanks are susceptible to decay and last only 20 to 25 years) or if undersized for sewage flows. • Keep records of pumping, maintenance and repair. Be Careful About What Goes Into Your Septic System: • Take household hazardous wastes to a municipal hazardous waste facility. If you pour wastes such as paint or grease down drains or into toilets, they can seep into the groundwater. They may also prevent your septic system from working properly. For more information on the management of septic systems, view this PDF from Conservation Ontario: http://goo.gl/evXccX or visit their website at www.conservationontario.ca

Thanks for the kind words and readership. In any shop I've worked in over the years, we've always recommended the three month/5,000 km oil change interval with the limited exceptions of autos requiring pure synthetic engine oils which can stretch the range to 10,000 km on some vehicles. One question I always put to customers who are understandably confused at why a shop would suggest a three month/5,000 km routine while the owner’s manual says something different is; 'How long will the carmaker be responsible for your engine repair costs and how long will you be footing the bill?' As we keep our rides over nine years on average, the answer to that question is painfully clear. Car companies are in a race to provide the longest service intervals possible to compete with themselves, leaving their customers on the hook when the warranty expires, and the risks these stretched-out programs bring start to appear. And in all cases when an oil consumption problem arises, clients are told that up to 1 L of oil lost in as little as 1,000 km of driving is normal and doesn't represent a warrantable defect. You're correct, in my humble opinion, that a three-month/5,000 km oil change program is better and most professional techs would concur. “Hi Brian, My 2005 Chevrolet Blazer’s ABS warning light has been coming on, less so with the colder temperatures of fall. Some friends say ‘don't worry about it’ others say ‘just disconnect them’. My thoughts are, the ABS system is very important especially in winter. Maybe you could write up an article on ABS and the repercussions of them not working properly.” Thanks, SV I agree with your point that ABS (anti-lock brake system) is an important safety feature to have, especially in winter when road conditions make brake lock-ups very common. Your Blazer’s ABS controls are like most others in that, when the warning light is on, the anti-lock
brakes won’t function. One of the most common causes for your vehicle’s ABS light is the wheel speed sensor. These magnetic field detectors transmit a constant reading for each wheel’s speed allowing the control computer to compare them to the overall vehicle speed to determine if a wheel lock-up is occurring when the brake pedal is depressed. The sensors are mounted near or in the wheel hubs and this makes them prone to a number of problems. Dirt can become trapped on the face of the sensors and sometimes just having them accessed and cleaned by your technician can resolve things. The wiring to the sensors can be damaged by road debris or compacted ice and snow. In order to eliminate the guesswork and unnecessary repairs, someone with the proper equipment will have to retrieve the diagnostic codes that caused the ABS light to come on in the first place and then follow the prescribed diagnostic tests. The ice and snow is coming and with it two of life’s inevitabilities; a large number of vehicle collisions on the first day of snow and long line-ups at tire centres to get your snow tires installed. Both of these are completely avoidable. On the first snow day, adjust your commuting schedule if at all possible to avoid the heavy traffic and leave plenty of distance between you and other vehicles. But seeing that you can’t really control other drivers, leave early or late or stay home altogether. When it comes to snow tire installation, remember that while most good shops will have staff work extra hours to fit everyone in, they have a limited number of vehicle lifts and tire changing equipment. Make your appointment early to beat the rush. Don’t worry needlessly about what driving on bare dry roads will do to your winter tires; as soon as the outside temperatures dip below 7° C, you’ll get the benefit of additional traction without accelerated wear. Yours in service Brian Turner

The Athens Aeros remain near the top of the CCHL2's Richardson Division standings. Athens hosted Perth on Saturday night. The Aeros went ahead 3-1 early in the third period. The Blue Wings cut the lead in half with 5:16 left in regulation, but the home team added an empty-netter with about nine seconds on the clock to seal the victory. The Aeros took on the Vikings in Casselman on Thursday night. The home team had built up a 6-0 lead midway through the second period; the penalty minutes piled up late in the middle frame and in the first half of the third period, and the Vikings defeated the Aeros 6-1. Athens was outshot 40-31. Matt Berry had a goal and an assist for the Aeros and was named first star. Teammate Theo Todd scored the game winner and picked up the second star honour. Curtis Hanspiker made 40 saves in the victory. The two teams formed a circle on the Centre 76 ice and paused in memory of Brandon Hanniman and Alex Paquette of the Renfrew Timberwolves, who died of injuries sustained in a car crash on Calabogie Road early Friday. Two of their teammates sustained serious injuries. Athens (11-6-1-0, third in the eight-team division) has two home games this weekend. Ottawa West will visit Centre 76 for a 7:30 start on Saturday night. The Aeros will then host Char-Lan on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The Brockville Tikis hosted Richmond on Wednesday, Oct. 25. The Royals outshot the home team 46-37 and won 6-2. Brockville played in Embrun on Friday night and lost 5-3. The Tikis travelled to Carleton Place on Saturday and dropped a 2-0 decision to the Jr. Canadians. The home team outshot the visitors 38-18. Brockville (4-13-0-0, eighth in the division) hosts Ottawa West on Wednesday, Nov. 1 and travels to Casselman on Thursday; puck drops at 7:30. The Tikis' next home game at the memorial centre is against Carleton Place on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 8 p.m.

Brockville General Hospital, staff recognized for organ donation support TIM RUHNKE truhnke@metroland.com
It was a celebration of the lives affected by organ donation. Brockville General Hospital (BGH) and Trillium Gift of Life Network took part in an event at which advocates, donors and recipients were represented. The gathering was held in the BGH cafeteria on Thursday, Oct. 19. The local hospital was designated for routine notification in June 2014. The designation means that all deaths and imminent deaths at BGH must be reported to the network, a nonprofit provincial government agency that coordinates organ and tissue donation and transplants in Ontario. More than 1,500 people in the province each day are awaiting a lifesaving organ transplant. On average, one person dies every three days while waiting. Organ donation by one individual can help up to eight people, according to the network. Tissue donation can
help up to 75 others. More than five years after being diagnosed with kidney failure, David Presley received a kidney in 2013 from a 19-year-old male donor who had died. Presley, who lives in Manotick and is a donation advocate, spoke at the Brockville event and shared his experiences before and after the transplant. David's wife Lyn also spoke at the BGH gathering. "Nobody takes the transplant journey alone," she told the audience. About 17 per cent of Ontarians were registered when the Presleys got involved in the organ donation movement. That percentage has risen to about 38 per cent in Ottawa and is about 40 in Brockville (which are above the provincial average). Mrs. Presley lauded the local effort and encouraged officials at BGH to keep at it. "Please keep doing to work you do," she said. The Presleys encourage others to talk about organ and tissue donation
with their family and friends. A signed donor card does not mean that a person is registered. The registration process can be done online and takes just a few minutes. To register or for more information on organ and tissue donation, visit beadonor.ca Cathy TeKamp also recounted her family's experience with kidney disease and organ donation at the Oct. 19 gathering. Her husband Ben received one of their daughter Robin's kidneys in 2007. "Ben turned into a normal person again" after the transplant, according to Mrs. TeKamp. Robin is a social worker at BGH. Her father died in 2014. Karen Johnson, a director with the Trillium network, presented three honours at the Brockville event. BGH Clinical Services VP Linda Hunter is one of only five recipients of the Champion Award this year. Hunter, who co-chairs the local Trillium Gift of Life Network committee with Dr. Jamie Hynd, indicated she is very

Ridiculous plot, overacting make this film fun to watch MOVIE: Geostorm STARRING: Gerard Butler, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Andy Garcia and Ed Harris DIRECTOR: Dean Devlin RATING: PG Geostorm is awful. I loved every minute of it. Climate change has caused storm after storm to ravage the planet, and each one stronger than the last. Facing extinction, the world's governments are forced to work together. An international team led by Jake Lawson (Gerard Butler) builds a network of satellites that can control the weather. Jake names it Dutch Boy. While Jake is a brilliant engineer, he's not much of a politician. His outspoken nature forces his own brother Max (Jim Sturgess) to fire him. Max ends up over overseeing Dutch Boy, and Jake doesn't speak to him for three years. Fast forward those three years. A town in Afghanistan, the buildings and the people, are frozen solid. It would seem Dutch Boy is malfunctioning, and the only person who can fix it is Jake. Reluctantly, Jake agrees to go, but it isn't long before he begins to suspect Dutch Boy isn't broken. It's been hacked. On the ground, Max manages to come to the same conclusion. The two

brothers have to put their differences aside and figure out what's going on. If they don't, Dutch Boy could cause a geostorm that would sweep across the planet, killing millions. Geostorm is undeniably a bad film. The plot and the acting are over-thetop. It's far-fetched to the point of ridiculousness, and stretches suspension of disbelief well past the breaking point. It races to its climax and its conclusion, making it feel like it's over before it even got started. Yet I loved it. It was so much fun. I would watch this film again in a heartbeat — provided it was on TV, and not really costing me anything. So what makes a bad film a good or, more accurately, a fun film. It's usually a happy accident. In the case of Geostorm it goes over-the-top in almost every category, but still has some great lines and some good action. The story is far-fetched, but still interesting. No one in the cast is going to win
any awards, but they don’t phone it in either. It flirts with being campy but doesn't quite cross that line. Strangely all these things come together to create a really fun and entertaining film. It's mindless fun, but fun nonetheless. It's actually an impressive cast. No one is stretching their skills, but I still like seeing Ed Harris and Andy Garcia. Jim Sturgess is a good counterpoint to Gerard Butler's brilliant but hotheaded genius. Butler plays the hotheaded genius with the best of them. My favourite by far though is
Abbie Cornish. As Sarah she's Max's agent. girlfriend, and on the president’s secuDo not pay full price to see Geosrity detail. IN MEMORIAM
BALDWIN, Alan – In memory of a dear son, Alan Baldwin October 12, 1961 – November 7, 2013. Have you ever lost a son Who meant everything to you? One who you loved so very much, And miss him like I do? Have you ever had a heartache, Or felt that awful pain; Or shed those bitter tears, That drop like fallen rain? If you’ve never had this feeling, I pray you never do; For when you lose a son, You lose a part of you. So, dear God, take a message to Alan In Heaven above, Tell him how much I miss him, And give him all my love. - Loving you forever, Mom

Emergency area usually gets busier around this time of year: hospital With the anticipation of flu season around the corner, Brockville General Hospital (BGH) is reminding the community of the alternate healthcare options available to them before considering a visit to the Emergency Department. Reports from the countries in the southern hemisphere where influenza is underway suggest that we may face a much higher number of people becoming ill with influenza than last year. “Influenza is more common among the people over age 65, young children, pregnant women, and people with underlying conditions such as asthma, respiratory or cardiovascular disease and they, along with people close to them, are encouraged to be vaccinated," said Dr. Paula Stewart, medical officer of health at the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit. The flu can lead to serious complications for these groups, which can also lead to higher rates of hospitalization. “The Emergency Department is traditionally busier in the late fall and winter months, and with an increase in flu cases forecasted, we expect to be even busier than usual,” said Nick Vlacholias, president and CEO at BGH. “We encourage anyone considering a visit to the Emergency Department to assess whether the matter is non-urgent before making a decision about where to seek healthcare, and we ask for your patience if it takes longer for a physician to see you.” In considering the need for emergency care, BGH has provided examples where emergency care is necessary:
• loss of consciousness • pain is not relieved by pain medication • state of confusion • persistent, severe chest pain • breathing difficulty • sexual assault • mental health crisis For children with the following signs, please call your primary care provider. If you can't reach your family doctor or pediatrician, take your child to the Emergency Department. • diarrhea and vomiting and no tears, dry mouth or no urination; • baby under three months of age with a fever over 38.5 C or 101 F; • difficulty breathing; • a rash that does not turn white when you push on it. If you determine that your medical situation does not require urgent care, please consider calling your family doctor or nurse practitioner. Telehealth Ontario, at 1-866-797-0000, has trained nurses available 24 hours a day for consultation. BGH reminds residents that prevention, including a flu shot and proper handwashing, are the best way to avoid getting sick. For more information on where you can get your vaccination, visit www.ontario.ca/page/get-flu-shot. In Canada, it is estimated that 3,500 people die from the flu every year. There had been no confirmed flu cases at the hospital as of Oct. 26. Submitted by BGH
