Spirit of Giving delivers Christmas cheer to South Grenville area

Monetary donations enable campaign organizers to purchase the turkeys and other perishable items such as oranges, eggs and vegetables that are also placed into the Spirit of Giving Christmas boxes that are distributed to recipients who live in Prescott, Augusta or Edwardsburgh Cardinal. Toys are also added to the holiday hampers; angel trees that will be located at select retailers provide an opportunity for shoppers to purchase small gifts for boys and girls of certain age ranges as well as the elderly. This year's distribution date is Dec. 16. Recipients must register with Spirit of Giving in advance; several dates and times have been set for late November and early December, but the sign-up location is to be confirmed. Monetary donations can be given to any member of the Kinsmen Club or mailed to Kinsmen Club of Prescott Spirit of Giving Campaign at Box 1150, Prescott, ON K0E 1T0. For more information, call Art Hitsman at 613-3491315.

A high school accounting project three-and-a-half decades ago is still going strong. Volunteers have already begun collecting non-perishable items and money for the 2017 Spirit of Giving, a Christmas program run by the Kinsmen Club of Prescott with the help of students at South Grenville District High School. The teens are going door to door in several local communities late in the afternoon and early in the evening as part of the food drive. Spirit of Giving volunteers visited Prescott neighbourhoods on Nov. 7 and 8 and again on Tuesday, Nov. 14. Food drives will also be held in Riverview Heights on Nov. 15, Maitland on Nov. 21 and 22, Johnstown in Nov. 28 and 29, and Maynard, Cardinal and Spencerville on Dec. 6. Spirit of Giving will also be collecting donations along the Light Up the Night parade route in Prescott this Friday, Nov. 17 starting just after 7 p.m. There will also be collection barrels placed at many businesses and schools in the South Grenville area.

Christmas parades get rolling with Light Up the Night in Prescott

Monica Mroz/Metroland

Youngers removed their hats and bowed their heads in prayer at the solemn Remembrance Day service at the Brockville Cenotaph on Saturday morning. The emotional ceremony included a procession of the Brockville Pipes and Drums and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 96 colour party, as well as members of the Brockville Rifles and Air Cadet squadron. The downtown gathering at King and Courthouse remembered the men and women who struggled for peace, stood against evil and sought justice with the sacrifice of their blood, their minds, futures and lives.

30 Hour Telethon donates $241,500 to Brockville palliative care BY TIM RUHNKE

Tim Ruhnke/Metroland

truhnke@metroland.com

It's a record donation for the 30 Hour Telethon. The community-based team presented the proceeds from this year's event — $241,500 — to palliative care and BGH officials at the Garden Street Site on Thursday, Nov. 9. "This isn't our money," telethon committee chair Wayne Blackwell proclaimed. "This is because everyone donates in this community." The 34th annual event was held at the Brockville Arts Centre in late February. The two-day telethon features many live performances by local entertainers and raises awareness of the services provided by Brockville and District Hospice Palliative Care Service, which is based at BGH and receives no direct government funding. The local palliative care services took care of 475 cases in the Leeds and Grenville area last year, Blackwell noted on Thursday. The telethon chair acknowledged there are many good programs and organizations in the region that face having to pay someone to raise money on their behalf. Blackwell indicated that he couldn't say enough about the work done by the 30-hour volunteers in support of a service that means so much to many local residents. Blackwell said he didn't want to single out individuals, but he did make note of the long-standing support from telethon emcee and former chair Bruce Wylie. The 2017 telethon raised more than $250,000. Blackwell explained that the committee had stationery supplies

The 30 Hour Telethon team is joined by BGH and palliative care officials at the Garden Street Site in Brockville on Thursday, Nov. 9 to acknowledge the 2017 donation of $241,500. The 35th annnual telethon at the Brockville Arts Centre is set for Feb. 24-25, 2018. to purchase this year. He also noted that the sound crew at the telethon is paid, although Blackwell was quick to note that it provides the service on the cheap. "Our overhead is pretty minimal," he said. BGH CEO and President Nicholas Vlacholias accepted the donation from the telethon team. Also on hand at the gathering on Thursday was Kevin Empey, the provincially-appointed hospital supervisor at BGH. The 2018 telethon at the arts centre is set for Feb. 24-25. The committee donated $230,000 last November.

Leeds and Grenville committee votes to express interest in school property TIM RUHNKE truhnke@metroland.com

Municipalities are considering the possibility of acquiring certain sites that have been declared surplus by the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB). Leeds and Grenville council voted at a committee-of-the-whole meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 7 to direct counties staff to express an interest in the former North Grenville District High School property in Kemptville. Council declined to express an interest in two other surplus UCDSB schools: Benson in Cardinal and Rideau Centennial in Portland. However, the townships in which those former elementary schools are located have expressed an interest in the respective sites. Provincial regulations require school boards to offer surplus properties at fair market value to host municipalities before the sites can be made available for private sale. A Leeds and Grenville staff report had recommended that the committee decline all three of the properties. North Grenville Mayor David

Gordon noted the former high school would be an "ideal spot" for social housing, something that is in short supply in the Kemptville area. Counties staff are still reviewing the possibility of expressing an interest in the former Kemptville public school property. As for Benson, which closed this summer, Edwardsburgh Cardinal Mayor Pat Sayeau told the committee that the building would require an estimated $5 million in repairs. In noting that the building is a liability to the board, Sayeau suggested that it might be better for the township to control the property. The mayor also indicated that he has industry that is interested in the Benson site. Rideau Lakes Mayor Ron Holman expressed a similar sentiment about Rideau Centennial, noting it might be cheaper to rebuild rather than modify the existing structure. "We'd love to put a hub in there," said Holman, who cautioned his peers to be careful about such land acquisitions. The real estate disposal notices issued by the school board do not indicate the fair market value for the properties.

Brockville Community Choir prepares for its performance on Nov. 26 MONICA MROZ

A selection of sacred choral music, along with festive favourites, will be offered at a seasonal concert later this month. The Brockville Community Choir presents O Magnum Mysterium at First Presbyterian Church at Church and William streets in downtown Brockville on Sunday, Nov. 26. The 35-member choir and chamber orchestra will open the 7:30 p.m. concert with Part 1 of Händel’s Messiah. The musical story of the birth of Jesus is always a popular draw for the community, notes choir president Charlotte Patterson. The choral work also features soloists, including a solo by Lydia Piehl. The second half of the production includes “interesting but less-heard selections” of sacred music, as well as three sing-along carols that engage the audience, Patterson said during the choir’s regular Wednesday evening rehearsal last week. “It’s a beautiful sound; it’s quite an accomplished group.” O Magnum Mysterium is dedicated to Heather Eyerly, the Brockville Community Choir long-time conductor who passed away last June. In explaining that the group’s new artistic director, Dianne Baird, has created a good relationship with the choir members, Patterson said the director also makes everyone feel comfortable and is open and inclusive. “We like to be pushed, and we’re learning a lot,” Patterson added. “We’re very pleased to have Dianne.” With an impressively-full resume to her credit, Baird currently serves as voice area co-ordinator and director of the Queen’s University Opera Ensemble. She teaches courses in vocal methods, including choral conducting, lyric diction and applied voice. As well, Baird has completed four university degrees in music, music education, English and voice performance. She has also earned the medal for excellence in music education from Memorial University in Newfoundland, her home province. The community choir always welcomes new members, especially men and young men and women, the presi-

dent said. “When you’re singing, you don’t think about anything else. You’re using all your modalities, and you’re very present in the moment. Blending sound and making a joyful noise with other people is so rewarding, she added. “If you like music and you like to sing, it’s a wonderful place to be.” With a goal of engaging youth in the art of singing and enhancing the quality of the community’s cultural life, the choir is also reaching out to local high schools in the hope of sharing their enthusiasm for music. “Come to a rehearsal and see what we do,” encouraged Patterson. Rehearsals take place every Wednesday at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian. Contact Patterson at 613-2130378 or visit brockvillechoir.com for more information. The group also stages an annual spring concert; the choir was established in 1986. Complimentary tickets are being offered to local high schools for the Nov. 26 performance. Adult tickets are $25. Students are $10 and children age 12 and under are admitted free. Tickets are available at Colonial Flowers on King St. W. in Brockville, Flowers Brockville on Kent BouleMonica Mroz/Metroland vard, from any choir member and at The tenor and bass sections of the Brockville Community Choir rehearse for its concert to take place on Nov. the door. COMMENTARY Salute young role models

It's a way of acknowledging and giving credit to children and teenagers who are making a difference and are going above and beyond what society would expect from someone that age. Youngsters who raise money for a cause or who selflessly volunteer their time to help other people in the community are examples of the positive contributions that are worth celebrating. The Ontario Junior Citizen Award is once again seeking nominations for the annual youth recognition program. Ontario residents between the ages of six and 17 are eligible. There are several areas to which the provincial award applies; they include community service, acts of heroism, contributing to community while living with physical or psychological limitations, excelling in the arts or athletics and so-called "good kids" who are making life better for others. These deserving young people serve as role models to their peers and also set an example from which many adults could learn. Up to 12 nominees from across the province will be selected, and the award recipients will be honoured at a special ceremony at Queen's Park next spring. Community fundraiser and elementary school student Corbin Evans of Brockville was one of the 2016 Ontario finalists who were welcomed by the lieutenant-governor and ended up meeting the premier in Toronto earlier this year. Each nominee will be presented with a certificate of recognition in the new year. Nomination forms are available at ocna.org/juniorcitizen. Supporting documentation, that includes at least two testimonials from individuals other than the nominator, are required. The nomination must also include the consent of a nominee's parent or guardian, and the deadline for 2017 submissions is Nov. 30. Much work was done to keep log house warm during long winter months

Watching Mother get the house ready for the cold blasts of winter, told me that soon the fields would be blanketed with snow as far as the eye could see, and a path would lead us to the barns and the pump in the yard. The long underwear and navy blue fleece-lined bloomers would be ready to replace the flour bag underpants we wore at other times in the year. But Mother, after coming from New York City, to a log house with no amenities, soon found out it took more than the heat from the Findlay Oval to keep the house warm during the long Renfrew county winters. First, she took the rag bag from behind the kitchen door, cut long strips from ragged underwear no longer fit to wear, or wool sox beyond repair, and laid everything out on the kitchen table. Then with a kitchen knife, she stuffed every window frame in the kitchen, so that not a breath of air could come in, while preventing heat from going out.

Our bed sheets would be replaced with flannelette, which I thought were more than a step up from the four flour bags sewn together to cover our feather mattresses and separate us from the tickings on top. They came from Eaton’s catalogue, and apart from their warmth, I loved the wide coloured strips on either end of each sheet. Mother would bring in from the summer kitchen the same four bricks that had been stacked out there since Spring, and they would be put on the

back of the cook stove after supper had been cleared away so that by the time we went upstairs to bed, they would be hot...too hot to handle, so would be wrapped in newspaper and then in a towel. Just before we crawled into bed, Mother would put the hot bricks in our beds to take away the chill that never seemed to leave the upstairs of our old log house. Sometime through the night, and I could never catch her at it, my sister Audrey with whom I shared the bed, would remove the bricks when they had lost their heat, and in the morning I would see them stacked at the stair step to be taken back down to the kitchen. And when it was obvious that winter was here to stay, the parlour, the smallest room in the house, would be closed off. A braided rug would be rolled and placed on the floor tight to the door to keep the precious heat in the kitchen. The parlour would only be opened if it was our turn to host the Saturday

night party, when hopefully enough heat from the kitchen would warm it up before neighbours moved in to play euchre. With no foundation under the house, the floors were always cold and drafty. Aunt Bertha, our next door neighbour showed Mother how to make simple felt slippers, which were really only two pieces of felt held together with blanket-stitching, but helped a little to keep our feet warm. But when we sat around the old pine table at night, we each had our own cushion to put under our feet as well. Father, of course, never complained about the cold house. At night he sat in the rocking chair by the stove, with his feet on the oven door. His long combination underwear served as his pyjamas, and hand-knit sox from Mrs. Beam left his feet only when Mother forcibly removed them from his feet to add them to the Monday wash. When the serious blasts of winter

finally came to Northcote, the pine table, which at other times sat in front of the window looking out to the grape arbour, was moved out from that wall, more into the middle of the kitchen when we had our meals, or after supper when we sat around it involved in the amusements that helped us wile away the time before we climbed the stairs for bed. The kitchen, the biggest room in the house, would be as warm as toast in the evening. I knew before he went to bed, Father would stoke the Findlay Oval, wait for it to catch so we wouldn’t have a flu fire, and as winter closed in around us, everything that could be done, had been done to help us through the long and bitterly cold winters of Renfrew county. Diagnosing the problem can be tricky “Hi Brian, My 2013 Hyundai Elantra is driving me and my dealership crazy. When the temperature goes below freezing the left front wheel area knocks when I drive over road cracks and small holes. The colder it gets the louder it knocks. I've had it into the dealer six times and aside from replacing a small part, which didn't cure the problem, they could find nothing wrong. I've had it happen already this fall, and as my warranty is coming to an end I wondered if you had any ideas.” Sincerely, P M Thanks for the question. The most common noise causes for this vehicle are the stabilizer bar links and they are relatively easy to diagnose and replace. In rare cases, steering column bushings and steering racks have found to be the culprits. That being said, often one of the hardest jobs any tech has to handle is a noise concern because it’s not always obvious or easy to ‘see’ the cause of the problem. When the noise is intermittent, such as in this case, more than a few strands of hair get pulled out. There is a rather low tech piece of equipment that can be helpful in a lot of cases. It usually goes under the name ‘mechanics ears’. It’s simply a set of several microphones wired to a small pocket-sized amp with a speaker and selector switch. A tech will place the small clip-on microphones where he or she thinks the source of the noise is likely to be and then road-test the vehicle and switch to the different microphones to narrow down the guilty party. My best advice is to work with your dealership and leave it with them overnight when the temps are expected to dip below freezing giving them a better chance of duplicating the fault the next morning. You could always arrange to be there in the morning to road-test the car with the tech to confirm what's happening. At this time of year a lot of vehicle owners consider rust-proofing or some similar protection package for their vehicle to help slow down the ravages of corrosion. First of all, rustproofing is rather a misleading term because if you drive any vehicle during our winters, no matter how much you spent on it and no matter how good your rust treatment is, it will still cor-

rode, plain and simple. About the best we can do is to slow down the process in order to let our vehicle outlast its payments (so a better way to refer to these treatments is rust-inhibitor). There are many different treatments available and all have their pros and cons. In my own humble opinion and experience, nothing beats annual spray-on treatments applied by experienced techs. The two most popular franchises in this market are Krown and Ziebart. It’s helpful to ensure the undercarriage is completely clean of any road grit and grime before applying any rust treatments and most qualified shops have the equipment to do this. Yes they may have to drill access holes into certain panels on your ride, but these are always treated with a corrosion preventative and sealed with a removable plug to avoid future problems. And your vehicle will require annual inspections and applications to replace any material worn off during the year and to keep your warranty in effect. About the only downside to annual sprays is dripping. You can lessen this annoyance by having your treatments done in early spring or late fall to let the cooler weather reduce any driveway drips. Most rust-treatment facilities will make available a cleaner to remove any drips that stick to outer painted body panels or that may get on a concrete garage floor and it’s a good idea to pick up a bottle to keep on hand. Thousand Islands Secondary School law and business teacher Larry Henry (left) is presented with the 2017 Arie van Mansum Award for Holocaust Education and Scholarship by Principal Terry Gardiner.

Henry receives Holocaust education award BRITTANY CASSELL bcassell@metroland.com

Larry Henry, a well-respected law and business teacher who has taught at Thousand Islands Secondary School (TISS) in Brockville since 1990, was presented with the 2017 Arie van Mansum Award for Holocaust Education and Scholarship for his exemplary work teaching students about Second World War history. Over the past decade, Henry has experimented with different ways to teach the topic and engage students, such as bringing in survivors to recount their experiences in front of his classes. “Larry is the kind of teacher that tries to make learning relevant and real for his students,” principal Terry Gardiner said in a statement. “Whether it is bringing in a Holocaust survivor, arranging Law Day for students at the courthouse with local judges and attorneys, or

having his classes organize a ball hockey charity event, he strives to give students a real world anchor to their learning.” The award is named after Arie van Mansum, a Dutch man who later immigrated to Canada after he helped save the lives of Jews trying to flee Nazi-occupied Germany. Henry was formally presented with his award by Carleton University’s Centre for Holocaust Education at the beginning of Holocaust Education Month in Ottawa on Nov. 9. TISS principal Terry Gardiner also presented Henry with the award in front of students at the Remembrance Day assembly on Friday, Nov. 10. “It’s important extremely important that we don’t forget,” Gardiner said to the students. “And that’s why Mr. Henry’s work is so important,” the principal added before congratulating Henry.

Removal of ash trees resumes at Thousand Islands National Park Parks Canada staff at Thousand Islands National Park (TINP) are continuing with efforts begun last spring to remove trees severely impacted by emerald ash borer. Work to remove these hazardous trees that are adjacent to buildings, trails, campsites, and other built infrastructure began on Monday, Oct. 30 and will continue through the month of November, according to a release issued on Monday, Nov. 6. Visitor services at TINP are now closed until May 18, 2018, although park trails remain accessible Brittany Cassell/Metroland for public use. TINP has identified a significant number of ash trees affected by emerald ash borer that are either dead or dying and could pose a threat to public safety. Visitor safety A large crowd gathers in downtown Gananoque for the town’s Remembrance Day service on Saturday, Nov. 11. is a top priority for Parks Canada, and staff are working to reduce hazardous tree risks to the public and park buildings. Only trees infected with emerald ash borer that present a risk to the public and park buildings will be removed. Other ash trees impacted by emerald ash borer outside the “fall” zone of park infrastructure (approximately 1.5 x tree height) will be left to provide wildlife habitat. Emerald ash borer is an invasive insect that is responsible for the mortality of ash trees in Ontario and Quebec. Invasive species, including fish, plants, insects, and other species all pose a risk to the native environments protected and presented by Canada’s national parks. Canada’s national parks belong to all Canadians and we encourage members of the public planning to visit a national park in 2018 to do their part to stop the spread of this invasive species. Campfires are a quintessential camping experience, and buying locally harvested or certified pest-free firewood on-site at your destination will help ensure infected wood isn’t spread. LADIES’ Parks Canada is reminding visitors to follow closure/ hazard notices as the park works to remove trees that pose NOW FROM a risk to public safety. For more information or to report a sighting of an invasive species within the national park, please contact REG TO $850 TO Sheldon Lambert at TINP at 613-923-5261, ext. 101, or REGRENOIR, TO $850 by email at sheldon.lambert@pc.gc.ca. Duo at Prescott concert clearly understands sensual component of music The Fort Town Concert Association concertgoers have come to expect nothing less than brilliance at their concerts. The Duo Palladium (Ariane Brisson and Olivier Hébert-Bouchard) met those expectations yet again. There must be something in the water in Quebec that produces this uninterrupted supply of wonderfully talented and accomplished musicians. The program, entitled Fawns and Nymphs, was designed to explore the relationship between the flute and the portrayal of mythical Greek characters in classical music. The program was also a vehicle for showcasing the enormous technical and musical capacities of both performers. Ariane and Olivier clearly understand the sensual component of music. The communication between the two was easy and secure, especially in the musically challenging work by Claude Vivier. The audience was invited to live in the silences, to engage with long sustained notes, to accept that less is more. In the hands of the Duo Palladium, the piece works to marvellous effect. If the Vivier work was an exercise in “less

is more”, then the Jolivet Chant de Linos answered the question of how many notes can you play in a short space of time. For this reviewer, Chant de Linos is not musically a very satisfying piece. It is, however, a display of unrelenting virtuosity. The flute player is required to use some tricks — flutter tonguing, for example — while performing dastardly fast runs. The whole range of the instrument from top to bottom and back again happens within a second or two. Ariane accomplished all the technical pyrotechnics with aplomb and the confidence of a true artist. Olivier was not to be outdone. His masterful performance of Debussy’s Masque and L’isle joyeuse had the élan of a showman. He was fun to watch with hands over the top of each other, fingers flying up and down the keyboard, and practically jumping off the piano bench at the end. Olivier’s flawless technique supported Debussy’s rich musical thought. It was a joy to hear. Ariane made some very subtle changes in tone to elucidate her musical inspiration. In particular, her low register would at times have strength and resonance and at other

times be a bit breathy and evocative. The top end of the range could be very strident to show the cries and lamentations of the Chant de Linos; subtle but effective tonal variations. Before the concert began, Margaret Williams and Jim Mallar were honoured for their long volunteer service to the Fort Town Concert Association and Jeunesses Musicales Canada. Margaret was honoured for her work in developing sustainable funding for the youth concerts. Mallar was honoured for his work on the technical side of producing the concerts. Congratulations to both. The fans of the Fort Town Concert Association must now wait until March 2, 2018 to hear the next installment of brilliance in the form of the Cheng2 Duo. Subscribers can bring a young person (18 and under) to hear the concert for free. These concerts are inspirational whether you are 18 or 80. Editor’s note: The above is a review of the Fort Town Concert Association presentation at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Prescott, Friday, Nov. 3, as reviewed by Howard Alexander.

The Spencerville Community Choir is presenting its 32nd season of Christmas concerts. This community choir draws voices from Spencerville, South Mountain, Prescott, and Kemptville. The repertoire includes a mix of sacred and secular music from medieval to contemporary. In addition, we have several talented instrumentalists who lend their ex-

pertise to the program. “Many people tell us our concerts signal the start of the Christmas season for them,” says Sheila Fawcett, choir director. “This year, we have a special production as part of our program that our audiences will enjoy.” The first performance of Bethlehem Bound is on Sunday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. The second performance is on Monday, Dec. 4 at

7:30 p.m. Both concerts are at Spencerville United Church on Centre Street. No advance tickets. Admission at the door is adults $10, students [age 12-18] $7, and children [to age 11] $3.

Strong cast gives off good vibes in latest Marvel production MOVIE: Thor: Ragnarok STARRING: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Tessa Thompson, Mark Ruffalo, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum and Cate Blanchett DIRECTOR: Taika Waititi RATING: PG There's a late 70s early 80s sci-fi vibe running through Thor: Ragnarok. It's in the music, the look and the style of the movie, and as someone who grew up on those kinds of sci-fi films, I loved it. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has had dreams about the prophesied end

of Asgard, Ragnarok. So he returns home to confer with his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins). However, instead of finding his father he finds Loki (Tom Hiddleston) masquerading as

Odin. Thor drags Loki to Earth to find their father. Once they find him, Odin greets his sons with sombre news. He's dying, and with his passing their sister Hela (Cate Blanchett), the goddess of death, will be released. As Odin's life force leaves this plane a portal opens and Hela steps through. This first meeting of siblings goes badly for Thor and Loki. They get exiled to a distant planet ruled by the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum). While Loki ingratiates himself, Thor is captured by Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson),

Maple garlic chicken wings a great snack or meal Watching football while enjoying sticky chicken wings and a cold brewed beverage is a sport in itself. Baking then broiling chicken wing pieces keeps the chicken moist, yet crisps up the skin. Preparation Time: 10 minutes Baking Time: 50 minutes Broiling Time: about 2 minutes Serves six as an appetizer, Makes about 34 wing pieces Ingredients 2-1/2 lb (1.25 kg) chicken wing pieces (no tips) Salt and pepper 1/2 cup (125 mL) maple syrup 1 tbsp (15 mL) each Dijon mustard and soy sauce 1/4 tsp (1 mL) crushed red pepper flakes 1 clove garlic, minced Line large shallow rimmed baking pan with parchment paper. Arrange chicken wing pieces in single layer on pan. Season with salt and pepper. Bake in 400°F (200°C) oven for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, in small bowl, whisk together maple syrup, mustard, soy

sauce, red pepper flakes and garlic. Drain fat from pan. Pour maple sauce over wings; toss to coat evenly. Bake 20 minutes, turning once, until wings are cooked when pierced with knife. Broil until wings are brown and crispy, turning wings as needed, one to two minutes. Place on large platter and let cool about 10 minutes before serving. Season to taste with salt and pepper. and forced to fight in the Grandmaster's Contest. Meanwhile Hela is decimating the warriors of Asgard. Only Heimdall (Idris Elba) still stands trying to protect those who remain. If Thor is going to save his home he'll need to convince the Hulk, Valkyrie and Loki to help. If Asgard falls the galaxy falls. Thor: Ragnarok is the biggest and wildest adventure yet, and it has the best superhero fight/team-up to hit the silver screen to date. The entire film could have been terrible, and it still would have been worth it just to see Hulk vs. Thor. Fortunately, Ragnarok is far from terrible. The visuals are breathtaking, and in the Marvel movie tradition it has that unique blend of epic adventure, action, and humour. It sends that shiver of excitement down your spine with each heroic battle, and gets you laughingout-loud in the film's lighter moments. An epic movie deserves an epic cast. Jeff Goldblum might actually be the Grandmaster, and Tessa Thompson

has some serious swagger as Valkyrie. Idris Elba has taken Heimdall far beyond anything he was in the comic books, and Karl Urban is perfect as the Executioner. Tom Hiddleston remains my favourite. He's everything Loki should be. He's cunning, mischievous, ruthless and yet, despite it all, he's still Thor's brother. As Hela, Cate Blanchett exudes power and strength. A comic-book movie is only as good as its villain, and she is stunning. Chris Hemsworth is Thor. He's mastered the role. You see it in the ease with which he handles the humour, and the strength he commands as the hero. If I have one critique, it's that they may have pushed the humour a touch too far. It isn't always necessary to go for the joke. Still, I loved the vision and adventure of Ragnarok, and I can't wait for Infinity War. Mark Haskins’ column is a regular feature.

Brockville chamber of commerce honours local businesses, individuals TIM RUHNKE truhnke@metroland.com

It was another night of excellence. The Brockville and District Chamber of Commerce handed out its 2017 awards on Thursday night. The sold-out gala was held at the Brockville Memorial Centre community hall. Recipients of four of the annual awards were announced after dinner at the local business organization's celebration that had a Canada 150 theme; other recipients had been named in the weeks leading up to the event. Boardwalk Dental Care was named Business of the Year. Ketchum Manufacturing and Axens Canada Specialty Aluminas were the other nominees. The 2017 Small Business of the Year honour went to Spitfire Café. The other two finalists for the award were Ford Electric and Dive Brockville Adventure Centre."Thank you for welcoming us," said an almost speechless café co-owner Nathalie Lavergne. The Brockville Railway Tunnel Committee

was acknowledged with the Tourism award. Also up for the honour were 1000 Islands and Seaway Cruises and Brockville Arts Centre. Committee Chair David LeSueur said what's really rewarding is the city spirit that is coming together. The Brockville area has the tourist attractions now; in addition to the railway tunnel, LeSueur referred to the Aquatarium as well as zip-lining at Skywood Eco Adventure west of the city. The chamber's Community Excellence award went to Brockville and Area Special Olympics. The other nominees were Jeff Severson of the Brockville Winter Classic and the Brockville Railway Tunnel Committee. Each of the four award recipients previously announced were recognized at the chamber gala: Citizen of the Year Doris Hallett; Business Person of the Year Michael Adamcryck; Young Professional Jessica Barabash; and Employment + Education Centre, which garnered the President's Award that is not necessarily handed out Tim Ruhnke/Metroland each year. "I get great enjoyment inside," Hallett commented. Chamber past-president Laura Good indicated the business organization received a record number of nominations – 102 – for this year's awards. The family of the late Greg Hinton was in-

vited to the stage near the end of the gala. The radio station manager and chamber advocate who hosted the awards night on numerous occasions died of cancer in January at the age of 54. Holiday pet hazards to look out for Keep your four-legged friend safe this holiday season by keeping hazardous products out of paw’s reach. Food What’s good for you isn’t necessarily good for your dog or cat. Many popular holiday foods are actually quite toxic for animals. Keep this list of dangerous ingredients handy while you cook for the humans around the table. • • • • • • • • • •

Garlic and onions Alcohol Peanuts and tree nuts Coffee, tea and soft drinks Candy Mushrooms Chocolate Peach and nectarine pits Bones and fats Grapes and raisins

To avoid unfortunate events over the holiday season, keep your pet on its regular diet and away from harmful foods. You may also want to warn your guests not to feed your animals any “treats” under the assumption that this is a harmless gesture. Plants Traditional Christmas plants, such as holly, mistletoe and poinsettias, as well as potpourri can be very attractive to cats and dogs. Keep them out of reach of your pets. Decorations Holiday decorations are another source of potential danger for your pets. Tinsel, glass ornaments, candles, stringed lights and unstable Christmas trees are a few household hazards to be careful of.

Just as in humans, pets can be affected by diabetes. Diabetes in animals is similar to that in humans. It is extremely important as caregivers to our pets to recognize the signs of diabetes and provide the veterinary care and treatments they need. Just like in human medicine, there are two types of diabetes mellitus that occur in pets: Type I and Type II. Type I diabetes mellitus occurs when the cells in the pancreas do not function properly or at all, and therefore do not produce insulin. The job of insulin is to regulate the level of glucose, or sugar, in the bloodstream and control the delivery of glucose to the body. Type I diabetes is the most common type of diabetes in dogs and is rare in cats. Type I diabetes requires life-long insulin therapy. Type II diabetes mellitus occurs when some of the cells in pancreas function, but the amount of insulin is not enough, as well as a phenomenon called insulin resistance, where cells in the body do not let insulin affect them. Middle-aged to older pets that are overweight or obese are at a higher risk of developing Type II diabetes. Certain breeds of dogs and cats are more predisposed to develop diabetes mellitus and female dogs and male cats are over-represented. The most common signs of diabetes are: •Increased thirst •Increased urination •Increased appetite •Weight loss despite an increased appetite •Cataracts, or whiteness of the lens of the eye (seen in dogs), often recognized first as blindness •Weakness and lethargy •Poor skin condition •Dull, thin coat If your pet has any of these signs, you should see your veterinarian right away.

My name is Patsy. In our Meet Your Match program, I am an orange Sidekick. Like all sidekicks, I’m just plain good company. I like attention, and I also like my solitude. I don’t go looking for trouble but I’m no scaredy-cat, either. If you are looking for a steady companion to travel with you on the road of life, look no further. My adoption fee includes the cost of my surgery, microchip identification, deworming and flea/tick protection, my first set of vaccinations, and six weeks of complimentary pet insurance.
