Giant Tiger welcomes public to Johnstown distribution centre BY MONICA MROZ

It was a community celebration hosted by a company that is creating quite a roar in Edwardsburgh Cardinal. Giant Tiger — Canada’s leading Canadian-owned family discount store — opened the doors of its massive centralized distribution centre in Johnstown to the public on Saturday, Sept. 30. The celebration was expected to attract more than 4,000 people who paraded through the state-of-the-art warehouse and office facility that is the equivalent in size to 10 football fields. It is the single largest project in the company’s 56-year history. The distribution centre floor alone was constructed with 1,700 dump truck loads of cement. Local contractors and about 200 people were employed in the project since ground breaking in April 2016; several trades, including landscaping, electrical, cosmetic work and software testing are still finishing up. Community charities were the big winners at the Giant Tiger celebration Saturday, Sept. 30 to mark the opening of its new distribution centre in Johnstown, east of Prescott. The charities shared equally in the proceeds of the barbecue at the open house. From left are Bonnie Pidgeon Cougler, executive director of the South Grenville Food Bank; Paul Wood, GT executive vice president and chief financial officer; Karie Smail, representing the Cardinal Youth Centre; Lorne Bender, representing the South Edwardsburg Recreation Association; Mike Quinn, GT vice-president of warehousing and distribution; and Thomas Haig, GT president and chief operating officer.

A charity barbecue benefited the South Grenville Food Bank, South Edwardsburg Recreation Association and Cardinal Youth Centre. The centre’s systems are currently being tested, ramping up for the onschedule opening early in 2018. The warehouse section includes charging stations for machinery such as industrial lift trucks, and the Symbotic automated outbound palletizing area. The building also includes a secondfloor employee gym, games room, quiet area and newly-planted apple orchard along the outdoor patio. Executive vice-president and chief financial officer Paul Wood extended “a giant thank you” to Edwardsburgh Cardinal township and the local residents who welcomed the project and the Giant Tiger team to its neighbourhood. MPP Steve Clark welcomed the Canadian success story. “It is so great to have such a giant in the Canadian retail industry to choose this area for its expansion,” he said. Thomas Haig, president and chief operating officer, said the community celebration marked the two-year anniversary since the company acquired the building land from the township. abled the company’s growth and development, he said. The new dry-goods centre does not affect the frozen and refrigerated products facility in Brockville. Approximately 80 per cent of the employees from three Giant Tiger facilities winding down in Ottawa accepted a transfer to the new site. As well, Wood said the company is ramping up its staffing that will hover around the 200-mark, and has been working with local employment agencies. People are also encouraged to go to gianttiger. com and visit the careers link to apply. Local residents should not expect a noticeable increase in the noise from truck traffic, explained communications manager Alison Scarlett. Giant Tiger trucks are equipped with the latest technology in emissions systems and noise reduction features, she said. The new centre is a part of Giant Tiger’s retail evolution that began with its first store in Ottawa’s Byward Market in 1961, and that now includes 240 stores. The company employs more than 8,000 people in its stores, support departments, trucking, distribution and logistics divisions. Retail locations include Prescott, Brockville and Kemptville. The one to start that first store was Gordon Reid, who at the age of 83 still goes into work five days a week, his son Scott Reid told the gathering Saturday. Reid Sr. started in the retail industry at the age of 13, and has now

Scott, who is also the MP for Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston, said his parents saved and scraped together $15,000 to finance the opening of that first store. Gordon Reid had vision, his son said, knowing that he would have a chain of stores, and that the discount store model was one that could grow and change with time. It is the employees, however, who ensured the success and expansion of the company, he added. “It is the people that always make everything work ultimately,” whether it is the robots, the stores themselves, or the communities in which the stores operate, Scott said. “It’s people who make it happen.”

Fall food drive ends Saturday This is the week for the fall food drive in the Brockville area. The Rotary Clubs of Brockville lead the annual campaign in support of the Brockville and Area Food Bank. The organization located on Buell Street serves an average of 1,360 clients per month and spends an average of more than $14,000 a month to supplement donations from the community in order to meet the clients’ needs. The food bank is run completely by volunteers. The 2017 campaign goal is to collect 25,000 pounds of food and $35,000 in cash, which would cover about a three-month supply at the food bank. Rotarians will be collecting and sorting fall food drive donations at the Kriska trailer parked in the Canadian Tire lot beside Parkedale Avenue. The food drive volunteers will be at the truck on Wednesday, Oct. 4 and Thursday, Oct. 5 from noon to 5 p.m.,

as well as on Friday, Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Rotarians will be there for the final collection day on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donations can also be dropped off at Real Canadian Superstore, RBC Brockville, Walmart, Home Hardware, Giant Tiger, 1,000 Islands Mall and Canadian Tire. Shoppers can purchase prepackaged bags for the food bank at retailers such as Superstore, Walmart, Home Hardware, Giant Tiger and Metro. Paper bags that can be used to collect non-perishable food donations are to be distributed to many local households on Wednesday. Elementary school students are also collecting donations for the food bank this week. The Kriska truck will be unloaded at the food bank in the afternoon on Tuesday, Oct. 10. Catherine Deplaedt and Michelle Peters are food drive co-chairs.

How we use the internet is evolving, but can your internet provider keep up? We all love the Internet. Thanks to the availability of millions of new services and apps (as of March 2017, Apple’s App Store alone offered 2.2 million apps1), the Internet is making it easier than ever to work, socialize, play, shop, learn, share and keep ourselves entertained from our laptops, tablets and phones. Our nation spends more time online than any other (36.7 hours/month2) as we use our computers to watch movies and TV, our tablets to read, and our smartphones to browse and play. Internet usage is at an all-time high, as 89% of Canadians connect to the Internet.2 In fact, high-speed Internet has become so important to us that 73% of Canadians say they would be unlikely to purchase a home that didn’t have access to high-speed Internet.2

anything about these problems, so you wait for the connection to improve. Why does this happen? Often, it is because of something called “peak hours.” Peak hours are times of the day when more people are online. Maybe your neighbours are streaming movies, sending emails or just surfing the web. It is during these peak hours, when everyone is online at the same time, that some Internet service providers cannot keep up with demand and your connection becomes unreliable. Considering how important the Internet can be in day-to-day life, the challenges of a bad connection can feel endless.

Does your Internet provider give you the freedom you’re looking for?

We demand a lot of our Internet service, especially with more people online at the same time.

Whether kicking back and relaxing, helping the kids with a school projector putting in some overtime from home, Canadians are more connected than ever. Unfortunately, many of us have difficulty finding an Internet provider that can keep up, all because of where we live. As technology evolves, those who live outside of urban areas continue to be limited to what entertainment we can enjoy, how our families can connect, and where we can work. We should be beyond this problem, shouldn’t we?

If you’re spending time online (and who isn’t these days?), you’re likely familiar with the frustration of slow connection speeds, or an Internet connection that simply doesn’t work. We’ve all experienced these problems: Netflix slows to a standstill, emails sit in your outbox, or that dreaded icon spins endlessly in the middle of your screen. You feel helpless to do

It is sometimes difficult for many of us to figure out which digital ads or social media posts are legitimate, which is why police are offering safety tips and best practices in order to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft. For example, the OPP's campaign is focused on four broad themes: identity theft; online child safety; online shopping and safe trade zones; and the OPP cyber crime investigations team. Online and digital crimes in Canada are already estimated to total in the billions of dollars, and police are warning that the losses are expected get even worse as next-generation crime devices and schemes evolve and become more advanced. We know that scams that are not that new are still making the rounds and finding more victims, a recent example of which is a business that received unsolicited emails advertising heavy equipment for sale that were reportedly based on information lifted from legitimate auction and sales sites. The victim follows up with the apparently legit source of the emails and, after completing a wire transfer, is provided with excuses as to why the equipment has not been delivered and communicating has been difficult. In addition to using caution when dealing with unsolicited emails, the public is being reminded of caller ID spoofing in which the telephone number on display is a local or familiar number to trick the potential Tim Ruhnke/Metroland victim into placing trust with the caller when, in fact, the call could be A Japan display attracts visitors to the Culture Days hub on King Street West netween Buell and Perth streets coming from anywhere in the world. Mary relished in Mother’s special kitchen treats Mother put the last lid on the jar of plum preserves. They had stewed on the back of the Findlay Oval all morning. Then with a slotted spoon, she put them in the big brown bowl, and when they were cool enough to handle, with her well-scrubbed hands she squished out the stones, which were put on the breadboard. The pitted plums were then bottled. The stones were my treat. How I loved to smash them with the little kitchen hammer, and then eat the innards. To me, the pulp was as good as anything I could buy from the candy counter at the Five and Dime store in Renfrew. When Mother and I were alone in the kitchen, just the two of us, there were other treats to come my way too. “How would you like some oven toast?” she might ask. Would I? of it. Thin slices of bread would be slathered with butter on both sides, and put on a wire rack over a tin pie plate, and put in the hot oven. I could hardly stand the wait, as it toasted on the topside, and then the slices were flipped over to turn a golden brown on the other. It was crisp when taken out of the oven, and piping hot, and I devoured yet another treat of that magic time alone with Mother in the kitchen. I loved when Mother was making

relish this time of year. The smell of the spices, as the corn, or beets, cucumbers, or tomatoes stewing on the stove filled the kitchen. Mother would ladle out a heaping spoonful into a fruit nappy, and I would butter a slice of homemade bread, and dip it into the relish, and devour it in minutes. I knew if I asked for a second helping, Mother would say, “Better not...you don’t want to spoil your dinner.” Even if dinner was hours away, only one fruit nappy was all I was given, but how I loved that special treat. I think I was the only one in our entire family who liked crispy fried pork rinds. Before a slab of smoked bacon was fried, it was sliced thin, and the rind removed. Mother knew I loved this rind, and so while the bacon was frying in the big black pan, room was made for the slivers of rind

for me, and when they were as crisp as little pieces of raw spaghetti, another special treat came my way. Our ample vegetable garden served us well. I knew we would never go hungry over the coming winters when those shelves in the dug-out under the house we called a cellar, were full of canned vegetables, preserves, jams and jellies. Mother would spend days this time of year, “putting down.” And if I happened to be in the kitchen when she was making cucumber relish, I never failed to have a cucumber sandwich. To me, thick slices between two pieces of freshly baked bread, well buttered of course, was a special treat. No one else in my family, it seemed to me, liked cucumber sandwiches. But I could make a meal of them, if I was allowed, but again Mother would say, “Don’t spoil your

supper.” Any one of these special treats would have been enough to amply satisfy me to replace my dinner or supper if allowed. But Mother saw to it that what I got was ‘just a taste’. I would be expected to eat my dinner or supper as well. My sister Audrey, who was always concerned about gaining weight, could never understand why I was as thin as rail with all I ate between meals, and would say she could gain a pound drinking water! It wouldn’t have mattered to me if I grew as big as a house, nothing would stop me from those kitchen treats I loved with a passion. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Local artists are painting ceiling tiles to support Brockville General Hospital

The Brockville General Volunteer Association (BGVA) celebrated local artistic talent at Brockville General Hospital (BGH) on Thursday, Sept. 28. The Art of Healing ceiling tile program developed from a visit the association received 12 months ago from Elizabeth Tully and her mother, Daphne. Daphne was an acclaimed artist in Toronto, running a similarly successful program at Sunnybrook Hospital. Elizabeth and Daphne wanted to bring colour and art to the ceilings of BGH as well and asked if BGVA could coordinate a painted tile program as well. Fast forward to the launch night, where the association officially launched the program within the hospital. Over the last year, the association has gathered the talents of more than 20 local artists, to paint over 40 ceiling tiles with images of birds, butterflies, boats, seashores, the St. Lawrence River and the Northern Lights, to name just a few of the categories. These tiles were on view for an invited audience to sponsor for $100 per ceiling tile. “When Elizabeth and Daphne came to speak with us about the idea, we knew we had to take on this project and being able to invite local artists to paint the tiles has been so inspiring for

us," Lainie Taylor, co-chair of the programs committee, stated in a release. “When you’re lying in a bed all day, with a blank ceiling above you, the tedium must be immense. Now you will be able to look at a landscape, animals or a group of flowers,” continued Donna Shram, the second co-chair of the committee. “The diversity of painted subject and styles has been amazing for us to receive. Every artist involved has been so enthusiastic and creative with their work. It’s been truly amazing.” Ceiling tiles can be sponsored for $100 each with the sponsored receiving a tax receipt at later date. The sponsor can decide to have the ceiling tile placed in one of nine areas around the hospital: emergency, women and children’s health, ambulatory care, patient rooms, main entrance/central registration, intensive care unit, Brockville cardiovascular program, mammography and the orthopedic clinic. The BGVA has been working in the hospital since 1889. It is the fourth-oldest volunteer association in Ontario, with more than 300 volunteers giving their time to more than 20 different programs across the hospital’s two main sites. To become a volunteer at BGH, contact Liz Rogers at 613-345-5649 ext. 1254 or rogel@bgh-on.ca.

It’s almost time for an autumn tradition in the Brockville area. The Friends of Mac Johnson Wildlife Area will host the annual fall festival on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The yearly celebration at the Debruge Road site east of Tincap includes activities for the entire family. In addition to enjoying the fall colours while hiking on the trails, there will be a guided tour by bird expert Dan Cliffen at 11. There is also a

scavenger hunt, and youngsters will get a chance to build a bird house or paint a rock monster. The friends group will host a barbecue (payable by donations) at the nature centre, accompanied by music from Fiddlers Plus. Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority will provide kayaks and canoes free of charge, so visitors can paddle and check out the waterfowl on the pond. Admission is $5 per vehicle.

Victim Services needs more funding: MPP MPP Steve Clark used a member’s statement at Queen’s Park on Tuesday to call on Ontario’s attorney general to deal with what he describes as a funding crisis at Victim Services of Leeds and Grenville. “Speaker, the role of victim services isn’t limited to the few hours after an incident. They’re mandated to provide ongoing support,” said Clark. “This

includes developing safety plans for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence and human trafficking.” However, under the province’s funding formula, the nonprofit agency is only funded for initial contact with victims, while the outdated formula is based on 849 new victims annually. The Leeds-Grenville MPP indicated statistics show how dramatically

The situation shouldn’t be a surprise to the attorney general; it was raised by the Victim Services of Leeds and Grenville board chair in a Nov. 2016 letter, it is noted in a release from Clark's office. Warning about the impact chronic underfunding was having on the agency, the letter states: “We have been creative and resourceful and are well supported by our communities, however, there is a tremendous concern shared by our board in regards to the impact this is having on our staff’s mental health and our ability to continue service delivery in a rural environment.” Instead of acting on the serious issues raised, Clark said the government shamefully waited eight months to respond and deferred any review of funding for another year. “I find it absolutely unacceptable for this government to put them under even more pressure by refusing to provide the funding necessary for them to Tim Ruhnke/Metroland do their jobs,” the MPP stated. Base funding for victim services Volunteer Sandy Eliis has as much fun as the youngsters making bubis about $186,760, according to the bles in the children’s area at the 2017 Lyndhurst Turkey Fair on SaturMPP's office. day, Sept. 16.

Cabin temperatures can affect electric vehicles and their driving range “Hi Brian, I'm by no means a car girl, but I do enjoy your column. In all the discussion about electric vehicles, one subject I've never seen/ heard mentioned is how much cabin heating or a/c affects mileage. Perhaps your resources can fill us in.” Cheers, Ruth Thanks for the kind words and readership. Yes electric vehicles' (EV) HVAC systems can reduce driving range. It's hard to put an accurate figure on it because it depends on the driver's preferences for cabin temperatures and fan speeds. As their heat sources don’t use engine coolant (as traditional vehicles do) they supply much drier air, reducing the amount of condensation on the interior of the windshield, rear and door glasses. EV heaters are also very efficient and provide almost instant warmth when they're switched on. Their AC systems, however, are much like gasoline powered vehicles. From EV drivers I've met and spoken with at various EV shows, you can expect to lose about 15-20 per cent driving range in winter; partially because of heater use and mainly because of the operating temperatures of the drive batteries. If you want maximum winter range with an EV then dress for the occasion (warmly) so you can keep the heater use at a minimum. The same applies in summer for AC use. A customer concern came across my desk recently that highlights some of the misconceptions and risks involved in certain vehicle modifications. Apparently an off-roader recently purchased a new SUV from an authorized dealership and arranged to have a vehicle lift-kit installed (at that same retailer) to improve ground clearance and allow for larger-than-originalequipment tires. This is a common modification that a lot of truck and SUV owners have performed on their rides to convert them from ’soft-road’ to true ‘off-road’ utility vehicles. The problem with this particular case was

Car Counsellor BRIAN TURNER

that the kit was incorrectly installed leading to brake line and exhaust pipe damage. As well, the installation kit made no allowance for the change in angles of the drive-shafts connected to the SUV’s transfer-case. And the steering geometry and settings were far from perfect. According to this consumer the dealership refused to

complete the needed repairs leading to them looking to the appropriate Ontario industry council for redress. Vehicle lift-kits come in a wide variety of configurations with the most popular falling in the 2” to 5” range. On most SUVs, if a kit with anymore than 3” to 3.5” is installed without making allowances for driveshaft angle changes, the amount of stress placed on the transfer-case may quickly reduce it to scrap due to bearing failures. A good quality kit from a credible manufacturer will include components to accommodate these angles to ensure long-life and reliability (when properly installed). The most common misconception that consumers have in cases like these

is, that if it’s supplied and installed by an automaker’s authorized dealership, it won’t have any effect on the vehicle’s warranty. Nothing could be further from the truth. All car makers include clauses in their warranty documents to consumers that deny coverage on any component or system when the failure can be directly attributed to the installation of a non-approved part, regardless of who supplied and/or installed it. This leaves the customer to deal directly with the auto retailer or the kit supplier and seldom is this an easy or satisfying experience. Even if either of these two parties supplies their own written guarantee, if it’s not properly backed in financial terms and/or comes with an arbitration mechanism

when things go wrong, it’s not worth the paper it’s written on. Our final chrome event of the season can be found on Saturday, Oct. 7, it happens when the Gearhead Car Show comes to 55 Charles St. in Crysler, Ontario from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A big thank you goes out to Wendy Hall of the Highway 43 Car Club, who creates these seasonal listings and hosts spring planning meetings with all the area car clubs. If you have any questions, opinions, or stories on anything automotive please drop me a line, [By email to bjoeturner@hotmail.com listing ‘Question for the Car Counselor’ on the subject line. Volunteers dig in at TD Tree Day in Mac Johnson Wildlife Area

Tim Ruhnke/Metroland

The TD Brockville crew joins the Friends of Mac Johnson Wildlife Area for a morning of tree planting near the nature centre east of Tincap on Saturday, Sept. 30. More than two dozen volunteers planted 150 native trees of various species. Trees planted previously by TD in the wildlife area are doing well. TD Tree Days events are taking place at more than 150 locations across Canada this year. The local friends group will host the annual fall festival at the Debruge Road site in Elizabethtown-Kitley on Saturday, Oct. 14.

Fire Prevention Week October 8th – 14th, 2017

Change your Clocks… Change your Batteries!

The Seaway Valley's Queen of Crime is back with another tale to tell. Author Maggie Wheeler is the special guest at the Friends of the Prescott Library's next event to be held at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m. Wheeler has written a series of Lost Villages historical fiction/murder mystery novels based on the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project period of the 1950s. Her fifth novel is All My Worldly Goods, in which Farran Mackenzie uses her research skills to piece together the past and her grandmother's death to deal with generational secrets before murder strikes again in real time. Wheeler's first four novels are used by schools on both sides of the river to teach English and history, a friends release notes. Admission to the Nov. 12 event is free; donations will be used to cover the hall rental and to support the town's public library. St. Andrew's is located at the corner of Dibble and Centre streets, just over a block east of the Prescott library.

More Fire Prevention Tips! • Get your central heating system cleaned, inspected and serviced by a certified HVAC (heating, venting and air conditioning) contractor every year before using it. • Wood burning stoves should be examined and the flue and chimney checked for creosote buildup. • Remove fuel from lawn mowers before storing them for winter. • Don’t store cardboard boxes, paper or other flammable materials in the backyard. These materials provide ready fuel for a fire and all it takes is one spark. • Testing and maintenance requirements that apply to smoke alarm now apply to CO alarms For more helpful tips visit: www.mcscs.jus.gov.on.ca/ english/FireMarshal/OFM_main.html This message was brought to you by the

Brockville Museum’s annual silent auction to be held on Oct. 13 and 14 It’s that time of year again. “Kitsch & Collectibles", the Friends of the Brockville Museum’s annual silent auction, will be held at the museum on Oct. 13 and 14. This successful fundraiser continues to be one of our most anticipated and most enjoyable events of the year, according to a release. Every year is different, so you never know what you may find. With a wide and varied selection of antiques, collectibles, memorabilia, or even a bit of kitsch, there is always a great selection of items on which to bid. For those wishing to donate any items of local interest, or something old or retro, we would be most grateful! To give us time to get organized, please drop items off at the museum no later than 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6. If you are “on the hunt”, the auction will run on Friday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and on Satur-

day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at which time the bidding will close. Tallying the bids only takes a few minutes, so successful bidders are welcome to join us for coffee while we retrieve your lots. The silent auction has always been an excellent fundraiser. The Friends of the Brockville Museum appreciates the continuing generosity and support that our local community has shown as well as the many hours of work our volunteers put into organizing this major event. For more information about this and other happenings at the Brockville Museum, please visit our Facebook Page or webpage, email us at museum@brockville.com, or call at 613-3424397. The museum is located downtown at 5 Henry St. The 2016 Silent Auction was a great success with more than 300 items donated and almost 100 bidders coming out.

CRCA cancels St. Lawrence flood watch The advisories have finally ended, months after they began. The flood watch for the upper St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario has been cancelled, the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority (CRCA) confirmed on Thursday, Sept. 28. The watch had been effect since Sept. 7; prior to that, flood warnings had been in place since mid-spring. The river level at Brockville is 96 cm below its record peak at the end of May, according to

a CRCA release. Water levels on the river and lake have dropped steadily during the last few months. The Cataraqui coverage area extends downstream to just east of Brockville. The public is still being advised to take care in shoreline areas as water levels continue to decline. Recent erosion caused by high water and wave action might have made some banks unsafe or unstable, the release states.

A Special Feature designed to take your home from

start to finish!

Is your home décor in need of a drastic change? If you’re a fan of the extravagant 80s, then Memphis design may be just the cure for your drab interior. Read on to discover the secrets of this eccentric décor trend that’s making a big comeback.

What is Memphis style? Introduced in 1981 by the renowned designer Ettore Sottsass and his Memphis Group — an Italian design and architecture collective that brought together the decade’s most prominent visionaries — this style is anything but bland. Characterized by bold, colourful furniture and accessories, Memphis-style interiors push the boundaries of eclectic design to create a truly unique aesthetic. …Contunied on page 17

Terrazzo is a type of floor and wall covering composed of natural stone fragments, coloured marble and cement. It’s an integral component of the Memphis movement, as its speckled and imperfect appearance conforms wonderfully to this trend’s distinctive style.

Red Rams have fun at Brockville Collegiate Institute orientation

Emily McAllister and Julia Simpson get into the spirit of things as they and their fellow Grade 9 students at Brockville Collegiate Institute take part in Ramnation Day on Thursday, Sept. 21. Teams of high school frosh representing different nations (including Ireland) visited several activity stations at the nearby Commonwealth field; the annual orientation event is hosted by senior students at BCI.

The Brockville and District Chamber of Commerce has named the first of its 2017 award recipients. The president's award will be presented to the Employment and Education Centre (EEC) at the chamber's annual gala to be held on Nov. 9, it was announced last Wednesday. The honour is handed out at the discretion of the local business organization's president. EEC will be the fifth recipient of the award since its inception in 2009. Pat Markovich is the current president. Located on Strowger Boulevard in Brockville, EEC provides a range of employment services accessed more than 8,700 times in 2016-2017. More than 830 people obtained employment through EEC services; 574 were by way of job placements, according to a chamber release. EEC also distributed more than $700,000 in wage subsidies through job placement programs as well as almost $250,000 in training through the Canada Ontario Job Grant and other support funds. The centre is also involved with the Second Career program. The resource centre at EEC pro-

vides support to job seekers. There is free access to computers and other materials. The centre also helps by offering employment support that includes work boots, interview and work clothes, and transportation in an effort to assist individuals trying to land a job. Other programs offered at EEC include 1000 Islands Credit Counselling, Homeward Bound and Volunteer Group. The centre also houses several community organizations and programs such as the Volunteer Centre of St. Lawrence-Rideau and the St. Lawrence-Rideau (formerly Leeds and Grenville) Immigration Partnership. The chamber gala at the Brockville Memorial Centre will include the presentation of several other awards. Winners of the annual honours for business and small business of the year as well as tourism and community excellence will be announced that night. The Canadian Tire Rotary Golf Classic received the president's award in 2016. For more information about the 2017 gala, visit brockvillechamber. com. on

It's a sapling that is so fragile but so important in recognizing the Athens 11. Small trees grown from acorns picked up by an Ontario solider at Vimy Ridge in 1917 are being planted in communities across Canada. The Athens Vimy Legacy Oak Tree project was initiated by the Athens Garden Club. One of those young trees now has a place of honour at Memorial Park on Main Street East. A commemorative planting ceremony took place on the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 24. At least 150 people attended the gathering. Jean Brassington, president of the garden club, served as emcee."We honour you and your families for your sacrifice," she said in reference to the 11 fallen soldiers from the Athens area who died in the First World War. Alzheimer society offers brain health awareness sessions throughout area The Alzheimer Society Lanark Leeds Grenville is reaching out once again to local communities to help dispel the stigma of dementia. Knowledge is power and the “Brain Health Awareness Experience ” series has been designed to provide information and allow for positive exchange in an informal community setting. Mary Campbell and Cathrine Maskell, education and support co-ordinators with the society, will be presenting free lively sessions this autumn in various communities across the Leeds and Grenville area. “It is never too soon or too late to take positive lifestyle measures to keep your brain as healthy as it can be during the aging process,” Louise Noble, Alzheimer Society executive director, stated in a release. Cognitive impairment develops when risk factors combine and reach a level that overwhelms the brain’s ability to maintain and repair itself. Reduction of risk factors is a way to prevent this critical level being reached. “Community support is available for persons diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or a related

dementia,” according to Noble. Caregivers also need positive ideas and support to navigate the journey. “We are hoping the public will leave the sessions with an increased awareness of the disease and some tools to help them cope with a diagnosis.” Facilitators note that the free sessions are designed to be positive and informal. There will be time for questions, and all are welcome. Plan to attend the two-part brain health series at one of the following locations: Lansdowne — Oct. 3 and Oct. 17, 2-3:30 p.m., Leeds & 1000 Islands Public Library, 1 Jessie St.; Seeley's Bay — Oct. 5 and Oct. 19, 1:30 — 3 p.m., Seeley’s Bay Community Hall, 151 Main St.; Athens — Oct. 13 and Oct. 20, 1:30 — 3 p.m., Joshua Bates Centre, 1 Main St. W.; Spencerville — Oct. 16 and Oct. 30, 1:30 — 3 p.m., Township Office Council Chamber, 18 Centre St.; Brockville — Nov. 7 and Nov. 21, 1:30 — 3 p.m., Royal Canadian Legion Branch 96, 180 Park St. For more information, call the society at 1-866-576-8556.

Second annual Casino & Cocktail event supports St. John Ambulance brigade The stage is set for another successful Casino & Cocktail Evening. The event will take place at the newly owned and renovated 1000 Islands Village (formerly Grenville Christian College site) just west of Maitland from 6 to 11 p.m. on Oct. 20. Although the event name has changed in order to comply with AGCO guidelines, organizers promise that Brockvegas for a Cause will not disappoint. From the moment you arrive you will travel back in time to the ‘50s with classic vehicles (weather permitting), and entertainment provided by The Fabulous Belairs. “Last year’s very successful event allowed for us to see what works and where we can make improvements,” event chair and Branch Manager for St. John Ambulance Deborah Coligan stated in a release. “Guests will enjoy a sit down roast beef dinner with all the fixings, pies and traditional English Trifle for desert. We have brought back the gaming tables and the casino funny money which can be used towards bids on the live and

silent auction,” said Coligan. Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark is proud to be the honourary chair for this year’s event and said organizers definitely have a great evening planned – one not to be missed. Brockvegas for a Cause is the signature event for St. John Ambulance Leeds Grenville & Lanark and all proceeds raised will go towards allowing their dedicated volunteers to continue to run community services such as the Therapy Dog Program, Car Seat Program, Youth Program and to provide Medical First Response at community events throughout Leeds, Grenville & Lanark. Included with your $100 ticket is a full roast beef dinner, $500 casino funny money, a $70 tax receipt, entertainment provided by the Fabulous Belairs, a chance to bid at the live and silent auction and networking opportunities. Tickets must be purchased in advance and will sell out. Call 613-342-2974 or stop by St. John House located off of Perth Street across from the fire hall in downtown Brockville.

My Take

No longer the hero in training, now just the hero. I must admit Colin Firth is my favourite. He's so far removed from Hollywood's stereotypical action hero, yet he's so smooth and natural in the role. I could watch him teach manners all day. The Golden Circle is all kinds of fun. A must-see film for sure. Mark Haskins’ column is a regular feature.
