Elizabethtown-Kitley salutes its business community

Billings Automotive Sales and Service is the recipient of the Elizabethtown-Kitley 2016 Business of the Year Award.

The honour was presented at the township economic development committee’s annual luncheon held at Cedar Valley Golf and Country Club on Thursday, Oct. 6.

Elizabethtown-Kitley Mayor Jim Pickard was on hand to present the award to Dean Billings.

The other nominees for the 2016 business honour were Choley’s Fitness and Wellness Training Centre, Heritage Cycle Works, Miracle Maids and Pastry King’s Princess.

The winning business is located on County Road 2 at Lyn Road just west of Brockville.

David Miles, chair of the committee, said that the committee was thrilled with the quality of this year’s nominees. They were evaluated using 14 metrics, he noted.

This was the first time the business of the year had been handed out since 2012, when the Gravel Doctor received the honour. Previous winners include McNamee Concrete, Atlas Block, Tincap Restaurant, Hendrix Restaurant Supplies, Lafarge Canada, Burnbrae Farms, G.C. Hudson Supply and George Tackaberry and Sons.

The committee presented a rookie business of the year award in 2015 and honoured the 100th anniversary of the Brockville Country Club at the 2014 lunch. Elizabethtown-Kitley’s farming community was celebrated at the 2013 event.

The 2016 business award recipient thanked Elizabethtown-Kitley for the recognition. “It’s quite an honour,” said Billings, who told the other nominees that he knows what they’re going through in terms of running a business.

ACOTTI to hold forum in Brockville The public is invited to hear international touring artist, Deborah Dunleavy, keynote speaker for The Arts Council of the 1000 Islands (ACOTTI) “Looking Ahead” symposium.

The event will be held at the Marianne van Silfhoute Gallery at St. Lawrence College in Brockville on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Dunleavy offers insight into the ups and downs of her career as a singer, author, librettist, playwright and storyteller. She addresses the relationship of balancing creative with entrepreneurial aspects of making a living as an artist, according to a release.

As well, the symposium is an exciting opportunity for artist of all disciplines to learn about what’s been happening behind the scenes and what ACOTTI has planned for the upcoming years.

Kevin Empey has been appointed supervisor of Brockville General Hospital (BGH).

The provincial government announced the move last Thursday, Oct. 6. The board of governors at BGH received notice on Sept. 20 that the province intended to appoint a supervisor; the board had reached out to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the South East Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) for assistance.

Empey has worked in the hospital sector since 1990 and served as president and CEO of Lakeridge Health in Oshawa from 2008 to 2016. In his supervisory role at BGH, Empey has the authority to exercise all powers of the hospital board as well as the corporation, its officers and employees. He reports directly to the provincial health minister and was to start his work immediately.

“I am confident that Kevin Empey, working closely with the South East LHIN, local leadership, the hospital and the community, will help strengthen Brockville General Hospital’s programs and services in a sustainable and positive way,” Dr. Eric Hoskins, minister of health and long-term care, stated in the release.

All hospital operations will continue under Empey’s supervision; he

“…will take the necessary steps to improve the functioning of the hospital,” according to the release.

“I look forward to working with the community, the hospitals, the ministry and the South East LHIN to address the financial and organizational issues that have been identified,” Empey stated in the release.

“I will take action to help Brockville General Hospital return to a balanced budget and restore the public’s confidence in their local hospital.”

The appointment is the 22nd of its kind in Ontario since 1981, according to the release.

“Our government is committed to delivering high-quality health care to the local community served

by Brockville General Hospital,” the minister stated.

In a statement, Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark welcomed the announcement about Empey. “With his experience and ties to the local community, he is well-suited to this role at BGH,” Clark said. “I appreciate his commitment to work cooperatively with the community and look forward to meeting with Mr. Empey soon.”

The BGH supervisor is a chartered accountant and graduate of Harvard’s advanced management program.

Annual Rotary-led campaign supports Brockville and Area Food Bank

Athens community comes through again for food bank

Athens and Area Food Bank volunteers restock the shelves at the Methodist Church following the annual fall food drive held on Oct. 1. The ever-popular Island Breakfast on Refugee Island in Brockville has been named among three finalists for Ontario Culinary Tourism Event of the Year.

The winner will be announced at Ontario’s annual Tourism Summit in Ottawa to be held Nov. 21-22.

The awards, organized by the Tourism Association of Ontario, the Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation and the Culinary Tourism Alliance, recognize groups who have made a significant contribution to Ontario’s tourism industry.

Island Breakfast takes place over four days and features local breakfast fare including local eggs (cooked in a variety of ways from a local supplier), maple syrup and strawberries, all from local farms. More than 60 volunteers contribute their time to transport, cook and serve some 1,500 visitors on Refugee Island in the St. Lawrence River.

“This event becomes more popular every year and is an ideal opportunity for people to experience the 1000 Islands,” David Beatty, chair of the Volunteer Committee, stated in a release distributed by the Brockville and District Chamber of Commerce on Friday. “Many people would not have the chance otherwise to experience island life, and when you couple a ride on the river with excellent food and local entertainment, it is a perfect event!”

Island Breakfast has attracted visitors from as far away as Germany, England, China, United States and New Zealand along with many local residents. Since inception, the event has grown from attracting 700 visitors during a three-day event to more than 1,500 patrons in four days.

Net proceeds from funds raised will go toward building a pavilion on the island.

The Leeds and Grenville area is not part of a pupil accommodation review that will be conducted by the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO).

Trustees voted last Tuesday night to commence a review involving a total of nine elementary and secondary schools in the Cornwall area. That area was identified in 2015-2016 as being under capacity.

CDSBEO operates 40 elementary and 10 secondary schools. The English Catholic board – like its English public counterpart, the Upper Canada board (UCDSB) – covers an eight-county area extending from Gananoque to Hawkesbury.

UCDSB trustees voted in late September to begin a pupil accommodation review process that

includes almost 30 schools, 10 of which are in the Leeds and Grenville area. A first round of school closures is being proposed for the end of the current academic year next summer.

The first public meeting as part of the Cornwall review will take place on Nov. 30.

As is the case with their Upper Canada counterparts, CDSBEO officials are emphasizing that any school that has been identified as part of a review process is not necessarily going to close. “Accommodation reviews are designed to look at a grouping of schools to determine the best solution for everyone involved in the process,” the board states.

An eight-week choir program being offered by the Alzheimer Society Lanark Leeds Grenville will start next week.

“Minds In Song” will take place at St. John’s United Church (corner of Park and King streets) on Mondays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 17. The program is designed for persons with dementia, caregivers and interested members of the community. “Music can shift our mood, help us manage stress, and reduce anxiety” society Executive Director Louise Noble stated in a release.

This is especially important for caregivers, since music also has the power to unlock memories. “We find that people with dementia have a special ability to remember songs, she added.”

Noble noted that the program is specifically

designed for persons with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia and for their caregivers and families. Other community members are also welcome to participate. The program will have an intergenerational aspect, as some local high school students will be helping. Participants will take part in a festive community concert at the end of the eight weeks.

The society is fortunate to have local musicians James MacKenzie and Alex Fleuriau Chateau to lead the choir, according to Noble (who sings in a church choir).

Concerned parents and community members whose schools are on the Upper Canada board’s list of proposed closures have every right to be upset about what might soon be happening. Most of the cuts and adjustments that were proposed when the Boundary 2020 process was floated by this same board nearly a decade ago were realized.

We know what it’s like for a neighbourhood, small town or rural area to lose an elementary school for whatever reason. Many of the affected communities in the previous process were left with a bad taste in their mouths by the public consultation effort, which will most likely play a factor in how the new accommodation review is perceived. It will be interesting to see how trustees who were concerned citizens when Boundary 2020 was making the rounds will handle being on the other side of the table and having to make what, in fairness, are extremely difficult decisions given the reality of the situation. To say that some of the schools listed by the board are underutilized is an understatement.

Large chunks of some sites have been empty or almost empty for years.

The existing inventory cannot be sustained; it’s as simple as that. The challenge is what to do about it.

The extent to which the current government’s funding does or does not meet the needs of Eastern Ontario should be assessed, and provincial policy should be challenged by those who believe it is leading school boards to make drastic cuts in order to secure government funding for new buildings. Let’s remember that it wasn’t the current unpopular party in power that created district school boards in Ontario, and the days of there being a schoolhouse in each and every hamlet that dots the landscape are long gone.

It’s a lousy situation that is unlikely to satisfy any of the stakeholders involved. The public has a right to be upset; what makes it worse is there might be nothing that can be done about it.

Moving the Findlay Oval was a family effort It was time. There was a bite in the air. This was the day the Findlay Oval would be moved from the summer kitchen back into the house. It had been allowed to go out the night before after supper on Friday, so it would be well cooled off by the time it was moved.

Being Saturday, the brothers were home from school, and it would take every hand to move the big stove back where it belonged. With any luck, the stove would be up and running in time for supper. Heaven forbid that Father didn’t have a full meal at the end of the day!

Always, the stove was rolled in and out on logs, but Father had a better idea that year. He spent hours in the work shed building a platform on wheels, and it was his intention to hoist the stove onto this trolley, and

slide it right into the kitchen. Of course, it would have to be lifted onto the trolley first. And I remembered how the brothers and Father struggled to get it onto the logs and then roll it into the summer kitchen. Father said it weighed more than two work horses put together. Everyone was in bad humour by the time it was all over. So the trolley, I hoped would work out just fine. I stayed well away from the summer kitchen when the lifting started. I couldn’t bear to see the red faces, and the veins standing out in their necks, as they struggled with the load. Well! That move was different from all others! Father could be heard swearing at Everett, who was yelling at Emerson, who was blaming young Earl. Someone, Father roared, had forgotten to empty the reservoir, and as soon as the stove was tilted in the move, the water sloshed out, and covered Father from his waist to the top of his work boots. To say he wasn’t happy was an understatement!

So there sat the stove. Two legs on the trolley, and the other two on the summer kitchen floor. With

the water pouring out like a rushing river. I stood in the doorway, and it was like watching a Hop-a-long Cassidy Movie. For a few minutes Father stood and looked at the water running down his front, and the reservoir door hanging open. Emerson, Everett and Earl stood looking at Father for further instructions. I was amazed at how much water the reservoir could hold. With the toe of his work boot, Father maneuvered the braided rug that was close by, over to the pool of water on the floor. Of course, that only spread the water further, and did nothing to sop up what can come out of the reservoir.

He sent Earl in for the rag bag. “And don’t bring one rag. Bring the whole bag,” he hollered. In the meantime, he was asking who had the job of emptying the water. Father grabbed it, and without taking one thing out of it, used the entire full bag as a mop. Mother would not be pleased, and I knew the rags would have to be washed, dried and restored in the bag for further use.

Finally, as much water as possible was wiped up, the stove heaved onto the trolley, and moved back into the house. The pipes were put on. It took several hours to put everything back in order, a new fire lit, and supSee MARY page 9

Engaging Ontario teens in provincial affairs Top rating for Prescott at Communities in Bloom Applications are now being accepted for the Legislative Assembly of Ontario’s Model Parliament program.

High school students in grades 10 to 12 with an interest in provincial politics or who would you like the chance to experience first-hand how legislation is passed at Queen’s Park are being invited to apply to the three-day session to be held Feb. 22-24, 2017. The deadline for applications is Oct. 30.

“I’m a tremendous supporter of the Model Parliament program and any initiative to engage young people in public affairs,” LeedsGrenville MPP Steve Clark stated in a release. “I know previous students from Leeds-Grenville who have participated really enjoyed their experience, and I encourage students to

Students have an opportunity to meet the key officials in the legislature, tour the building, learn about its history and study the province’s legislative process.

The highlight of the program, however, is when students take their seats in the Legislative Assembly chamber to participate in a debate.

Prescott fared quite well in the 2016 Communities in Bloom Ontario program.

Each participating location is visited by volunteer judges and awarded a rating of between one and five blooms.

Key evaluation criteria include tidiness, environmental action, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscape and floral displays. Evaluations were held in July and August.

The Prescott entry received a rating of five blooms.

The Fort Town received a 2016 criteria award for landscape. The award is sponsored by Landscape Ontario.

Prescott also received a special mention for community involvement.

A provincial awards luncheon was held in Stratford on Saturday, Sept. 17.

A program release lists 13 communities evaluated in the 2016 competition. Ten of the 13 receive five blooms; two were awarded four blooms, and one received three blooms. Each evaluated community received a special mention.

Like Prescott, Merrickville-Wolford received a fivebloom rating. Heritage was the subject of MerrickvilleWolford’s special mention.

“Communities in Bloom Ontario is a program that inspires communities to enhance and sustain the visual appeal of neighbourhoods, public spaces, parks and streetscapes through the imaginative use of flowers, plants, trees and landscaping, through the preservation of heritage and cultural assets and with attention to environmental stewardship,” the release states.

Promoting prevention at cardiovascular program open house

The cardio program at the Charles Street Site opened in 2009 and offers rehab services to people recovering for cardiac surgery and angioplasty or stenting. Education, exercise and counselling are part of the program aimed at leading participants to full recovery. BGH does not receive government funding for the cardiovascular program; services are offered free of charge. The open house was held in conjunction with the Growing Women’s Health Campaign at Shoppers Drug Mart locations in Brockville and Prescott. Campaign proceeds go to the cardiovascular program. Below, registered dietician Adonica Keddy offers advice at the cardiovascular program open house at BGH on how to read labels and deal with sodium and added sugars while trying to make healthy choices. In addition to being reminded to take it easy on the salt shaker and to limit fat intake and add fibre to one’s diet, visitors learned that so-called natural sugars don’t end up being much better than the refined version.

Mayors consider flexibility in dealing with support requests from hospitals

A special hospital funding levy in Leeds and Grenville is still in the works, but local mayors have not decided how the money will be distributed.

A draft capital funding policy was discussed by counties council at its committee-of-the-whole meeting last Tuesday morning.

The committee had directed staff earlier this year to establish a 0.5-percent special levy as of Jan. 1, 2017.

The annual levy would generate about $180,000, based on the 2016 United Counties tax rate. The money would go into a designated reserve fund for hospitals.

In 2015, Kingston Hospitals requested a four-year capital commitment totalling $200,000. Counties council deferred the request to the 2016 budget; the hospitals withdrew the request in January of this year.

Grenville CAO Andy Brown was discussed at the Tuesday meeting. The submission included a proposed list of eligible hospitals: Brockville General, Kemptville District, Perth and Smiths Falls, Winchester, Kingston and Ottawa.

Hospitals would apply for funding, which would be allocated by way of a calculation that includes the total annual levy and the number of Leeds and Grenville patient visits.

Brown noted that the proposal would cover expansion and reconstruction projects, which he described as bricks and mortar items. Westport Mayor Robin Jones was among the mayors to suggest extending the hospital funding to include equipment purchases. It was noted that the government now pays a higher percentage of infrastructure costs; in return, the facility would be responsible for equipping it.

North Grenville Mayor David Gordon indicated he would prefer to

see eligibility for the counties money limited to “our own hospitals” in Kemptville and Brockville that are dealing with severe funding problems.

Rideau Lakes Mayor Ron Holman disagreed, noting hospitals in Perth and Smiths Falls are very important to communities in the township he represents. Holman also emphasized the need for the funding policy to be flexible in order to meet the needs of the hospitals. The counties should not take a hard-line approach when evaluating funding applications, he indicated.

The committee approved a motion supporting the concept of a special levy of 0.5 per cent; it would be up to council to determine at a later date how the special reserve is overseen.

Brockville, Gananoque and Prescott do not have seats on council, and property owners there do not pay county taxes. Those three separated municipalities are, however, represented on the Leeds and Grenville joint services committee that deals with such services as paramedics, social housing and homes for the aged.

It was noted at the meeting that hospitals can provide patient visit stats for each municipality.

Burton film takes peculiar turn from suspense to slap stick

MOVIE: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children STARRING: Asa Butterfield, Eva Green, Ella Purnell, Terrance Stamp, Chris O'Dowd and Samuel L. Jackson DIRECTOR: Tim Burton RATING: PG I'm not a fan of Tim Burton, but I have to admit he has a way with these macabre fairy tales. It's kind of his thing or at least it was. Maybe it's time for a new thing.

When Jake's (Asa Butterfield) grandfather Abe (Terrance Stamp) is killed, Jake struggles to come to terms with it. He loved his grandfather, and the stories he told him about the home where he grew up and the peculiar friends he had. To help come to terms with his grandfather's death Jake, and his father (Chris O'Dowd), go to a small island in the U.K. to see the home where Abe grew up.

Jake finds the orphanage or what's left of it.

It was bombed in 1939 and was abandoned. Or so it seems. Jake is startled to find his grandfather's childhood friends, and they haven't aged a day.

It's sometimes a startling mix of the horrific and the fey, but it does have a kind of fascinating beauty.

Of course Burton still can't tell a story to save his life.

Burton hasn't quite mastered the element of time travel in the film, but worse than that is how Burton loses the mood. The story has all the makings of a dramatic and thrilling epic the kind of story that gives you shivers. Yet when we gets to the climactic battle with the monsters we get a slap stick routine. While the farce is funny it takes all the seriousness out of the film. Instead of Harry Potter we're left with The Three Stooges.

He may not be able to tell a story, but Burton does know how to pick a cast.

Asa Butterfield is fantastic. Eva Green is marvelous as Miss Peregrine.

I find Jackson to be too over-thetop to be taken seriously, but Ells Purnell is a delight.

EEC seeks nominees for 2016 TeKamp honour Applications are now being accepted for the second annual Ben TeKamp Memorial Award.

Entrepreneurs contribute greatly to the health and vitality of the Leeds and Grenville community and often never get the recognition they deserve.

The Ben TeKamp Memorial Award at The Employment and Education Centre (EEC) aims to change that.

A successful local entrepreneur is to be recognized for his or her contributions with the business honour, which will be awarded in November. The successful recipients will be awarded up to $5,000 to put towards the development of their business.

“Celebrating the great ideas and initiatives from the local business community is something that my father would have enjoyed,” stated Mark TeKamp, Ben’s son. “The applicants brought forth some incredible and inspiring business stories last year. That’s what the award is about and we are happy to be a part of this effort to recognize and honour local entrepreneurs.”

Ben TeKamp was a noted local business owner and for many years helped co-ordinate the Self-Employment Benefit Program, which gave many local entrepreneurs the opportunity they needed to start a successful business. As well as being a threeterm Brockville mayor, he was also a tireless community volunteer and was a board member of the EEC for many

years. He passed away in 2014.

Applications for the award need to be submitted by Oct. 28. An award presentation and event honouring the winners will be held at the Brockville Country Club on Nov. 15.

In order to be a successful applicant for the Ben TeKamp Memorial Award, applicants or nominees must be located in the Leeds and Grenville area and be at the early stage of business development or re-invention.

Preference will be given to new businesses that have displayed a strong sense of innovation and creativity, and must be able to indicate how they can make a contribution to the community of Leeds and Grenville. (Full award criteria is available at www.eecentre.com.)

Applicants can nominate themselves or be nominated by someone else. In the case of being nominated by a third party, a nominee will be notified before their name is made public. Award winners will be required to inform the TeKamp family how they used the bursary for their business.

Trillium foundation and library friends help transform Cardinal branch

The Cardinal library’s new look was celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 24.

Officials from the Edwardsburgh Cardinal Public Library as well as the branch’s friends group were joined by members of township council, Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark and the public during a plaque presentation and open house. The Cardinal branch is located at the corner of County Road 2 and Dishaw Street.

The public library received an Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) grant of $60,000 earlier this year. The funding enabled upgrades to be made to the interior of the community facility. New bookshelves at more accessible heights were installed, as were new computer tables and additional leisure seating for visitors. The service desk area also received a facelift; it now has a more accessible counter and offers better ergonomics for staff.

Edwardsburgh Cardinal Library CEO Emily Farrell noted that the friends group helped make the project possible by adding little bits and pieces and customizing some of the work that was done. She described their contribution as amazing; the project would not have been completed without such support, according to Farrell.

Clark presented an OTF plaque on behalf of the foundation. “I can’t get over the transformation of the branch,” he told the gathering. Public libraries are the “lifeblood” of small towns and rural communities in the region, the MPP noted.

He also gave credit to the OTF volunteers who review grant applications in the region that includes Leeds and Grenville. It’s a hard job assessing all of the worthy projects and only having a “finite amount of money” with which to work, according to Clark.

Vendors will fill South Grenville at the 39th annual craft show The annual arts and crafts show in Prescott is already sold out, organizers announced last week.

There will be 225 vendors throughout South Grenville District High School on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The 39th annual show is hosted by the Kinsmen Club of Prescott. Money raised at the event helps to fund all the service projects in the community, including the Spirit of Giving campaign that helps over 350 families in the South Grenville area. The Kin family manages the show with the expertise of the Chair Tracey Hoogwerf.

Vendors from across Ontario and Quebec will fill the school. This show attracts about 3,000 patrons each year. The event’s theme has remained the same throughout the years: “If you can’t find the item that you are looking for at our show, chances are you won’t find it anywhere.”

Shoppers can leave their small children with the babysitting team, and make sure to stop by the Spirit Café to pick up a hot cup of coffee, lunch, or just a snack. The proceeds from the café also benefit the Kinsmen Club and the community.

Admission is only $3, and children under 12 while accompanied by an adult are free.

Province is making shingles vaccine free for senior citizens Ontario is the first jurisdiction in Canada to provide the shingles vaccine free of charge, saving eligible seniors approximately $170 and helping them stay healthy.

Starting Sept. 15, the shingles vaccine will be available across the province for people 65 to 70 years of age. The government is investing $68 million over three years in order to publicly fund the vaccine, which will reduce the likelihood of Ontario seniors developing the painful infection, and reduce visits to emergency rooms and hospitals.

“Vaccinations are one of the most effective public health interventions for promoting and maintaining good health,” said Dr. Eric Hoskins, minister of health and long-term care.

“Making the shingles vaccine available free of charge for eligible seniors is another way our government is investing in the health and well-being of Ontario’s seniors. This expansion is part of our government’s plan to transform the province’s immunization system under Immunization 2020 – our five-year plan to improve the health of Ontarians and protect our most vulnerable.”

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, affects more than 42,000 people every year in Ontario and can cause complications such as loss of vision and debilitating nerve pain. Studies show that the vaccine is highly effective when seniors are vaccinated between the ages of 6570, and this new program aligns with scientific and expert recommendations

from Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization and Ontario’s Provincial Infectious Diseases Advisory Committee on Immunization.

“By offering the shingles vaccine to seniors 65 to 70 years of age, the government is making another important investment in the health care system to better support seniors so they can lead a healthy, engaged and active lifestyle for as long as possible. It is another example of how we are making Ontario the healthiest place in North America to grow up and grow old,” stated Dipika Damerla, minister responsible for seniors affairs.

Those who are eligible for the shingles vaccine should contact their primary care doctor or nurse practitioner to

receive the vaccination.

Expanding Ontario’s publicly funded immunization program to help seniors stay healthy is part of the government’s plan to build a better Ontario through its Patients First: Action Plan for Health Care, which is providing patients with faster access to the right care, better home and community care, the information they need to stay healthy and a health care system that’s sustainable for generations to come.

Dreams come true at Terry Fox Run in Gananoque Brian Patterson had a dream to walk in the Terry Fox Run. Confined to a wheelchair most of his life, his thoughts leading up to the run were of a hero who inspired the world by attempting to run across Canada with partially-amputated leg before cancer took his life at the tender age of 22.

Looking relaxed on a warm September afternoon two weeks prior to the run, Brian says softly, “I think Terry Fox is a good role model.”

Born with cerebral palsy and legally blind, the 54-year-old has participated in dozens of Terry Fox fundraisers in his wheelchair since his brother died of cancer in 1985. Brian’s sister, Wendy, was born disabled and died in her mid-teens.

His mother, Leola, is his closest relative. Her move to the same nursing home earlier this year put her a few doors down the hall from her son. Brian has lived at Carveth Care Centre for seven years.

Holding his hand from her wheelchair parked next to Brian, Leola, 78, looks at her last living child with pride when he talks about his dream to leave his wheelchair and walk down the streets of Gananoque.

The pair seems happy and relaxed as they talk about the training he’s

done with physiotherapists and a dietician to prepare. He smiles when she calls him her little monkey.

“Hold your head-up when you do it,” she says gently.

“I will mom, all the way,” he replies with a smile.

“Leola encourages Brian’s independence,” says Shannon Buell, activity director at the long-term care home.

Dedicated to the 104 residents who live at the home, Buell was tasked with taking Brian, Leola and a few other residents to the Terry Fox event on Sept. 18. She says a team of health care professionals have been working with Brian to help him achieve his dream.

“We’re hoping Brian walks as many steps as possible,” she says kindly. “That’s our goal.”

“He’s a doer,” Leola says with confidence about the likelihood of Brian achieving his dream. “No wonder I’m so proud of this little monkey.”

Asked why he feels so strongly about this cause, Brian says quickly, “I want to see children live cancer free.”

Brimming with passion, Brian’s dream to leave his wheelchair and walk has made an impression on the home.

“I always enjoy the excitement in Brian’s voice when he speaks about the Terry Fox run,” says Brett Gibson, owner and operator of Carveth.

“I have pushed Brian in his wheelchair a couple times over the years in the Terry Fox walk/run and this year I am his biggest cheerleader.”

Gathering at the start line under blue skies and high hopes, Brett and dozens of supporters watched as Brian walked more than 40 steps (63 metres) down the road. His efforts were met with cheers of encouragement.

“Brian doubled the distance he was practicing,” says Buell, one-day after the Terry Fox Run. “We had to make him sit down for safety reasons.”

Brian smiles from his accomplishment. Like Terry Fox, he has proven anything is possible if you try.

“I feel proud about myself,” says Brian, looking amused. “Just call me Super Brian.”

Ontario housing activity to fuel renovations Ontario’s renovation spending is set for additional growth, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s (CMHC) latest Housing Market Insight report.

Current estimates suggest that the average homeowner equity in Ontario has grown by 14 per cent since 2012.

Most of this growth in home equity is concentrated among aging households. When rising prices boost home equity, households feel wealthier and thus are encouraged to invest in their homes.

“Although the average growth rate of home renovations is not likely to match that of the last couple of decades, the province is still set to see an increase. Ontarians are aging, the housing stock is aging, home prices are on the rise and more homebuyers are turning to the resale market – all these factors support renovation spending,” stated Ted Tsiakopoulos, regional economist (Ontario), Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

St. John Ambulance fundraiser at Aquatarium has Las Vegas flavour

It promises to be a winning night for guests and the local St. John Ambulance brigade.

A casino and cocktail night fundraiser for the Leeds-Grenville and Lanark branch will take place at the Aquatarium in downtown Brockville on Friday, Oct. 21. There will be games of chance played on regulation gaming tables, music by Healy and Orr and silent and live auctions. Members of the Brockville Police Service and Brockville Firefighters’ Association will serve as dealers. Elvis will reportedly be in the building that night, and there will also be showgirls and a slight-of-hand artist.

“We are taking Brockville’s newest favourite gathering place and transforming the Aquatarium into a Las Vegas-style casino for one evening,” Erica Sosnowski, event chair, stated in a release.

The ticket includes appetizers all evening, a welcome drink, $100 in casino money, a gift bag, a photo by Vertigo Productions. The event runs from 6:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Big winners will be able to use their casino money to bid on several live auction items such as a bead and breakfast stay plus dinner in Mer-

rickville, a $500 coupon for a European river cruise from Goliger Travel and a Vertigo family photo shoot.

Golf-related items up for bid in the silent auction include a U.S. women’s open pin flag signed

by Brooke Henderson and Alena Sharp, and a hat signed by the late Arnold Palmer.

Items featured in the live auction include an AED valued at nearly $2,000 as well as VIA tickets valued at $1,500 and a Nova Scotia golf package.

The lawsuit says the Province of Ontario failed to properly care for and protect people who attended or resided at the Schools.

Survey reveals small businesses in Ontario expect less growth in 2017 Small business owners in Ontario are headed into 2017 with a less optimistic outlook compared to last year, according to new data released by Meridian, Ontario’s largest credit union. Meridian’s 2016 Small Business Banking in Ontario survey found that 67 per cent of small businesses expect growth this year, down 11 per cent from 2015.

“I’m not surprised about these results, because when the economy becomes unpredictable, small businesses feel it first,” says Geordan Robertson, director of small business for Meridian. “We’ve noticed that many small businesses are approaching us with cash flow concerns, especially those who were not conservative when they were running a surplus. These entrepreneurs are looking for solutions that they can’t find with their current financial institutions.”

cash flow as their top concern with economic uncertainty coming in second at 51 per cent.

Changes in fluctuating currency made 38 per cent uneasy, and provincial legislation changes concerned 37 per cent, but only 23 per cent are worried about finding good employees.

The surging real estate market also draws red flags with some small businesses. But while more than half, (57 per cent) agree that the current market is unsustainable, only 12 per cent say that the real estate market is negatively impacting their business expansion plans. Findings include: • 24 per cent indicate they will hold off on making a real estate purchase because of the uncertainty.

• 35 per cent of respondents feel a less expensive option would be to lease rather than purchase a business property.

• 17 per cent said the current market has pro-

vided positive opportunities for their business expansion plans.

• 20 per cent of small businesses agree that the current real estate market generated positive effects for their business.

• 20 per cent have been prompted to adopt a virtual work environment.

“The real estate market is definitely influencing the way small businesses operate,” says Robertson. “We’re seeing some of our members either race to purchase real estate, or liquidate some or all of their real estate holdings and turn to leasing instead. And as the results indicate, many are adopting virtual environments to cut down on capital costs.”

Robertson urges small businesses to be conservative and look for creative solutions during the period of economic uncertainty.

“It’s about making it work for you,” he says.

He also has a few tips for small businesses that can help them stay opti-

mistic: • Stay conservative if you’re running a surplus - If you find yourself in a surplus position (maybe you just closed a big contract, or sale – or perhaps due to a seasonal element of your business), don’t start spending more. Keep your costs down, remain conservative and put the extra funds aside.

• Capitalize on surplus funds - Ensure that you are earning interest on those surplus funds.

The principal protection and liquidity of the rate of interest will depend on your risk tolerance for fluctuations.

• Separate personal and business credit cards/lines of credit – Business lines of credit should be separated from personal, otherwise you can run up personal expenses all too quickly and easily, compromising your business cash flow. A good accountant can help you organize your books.

• Understand the days’ receivables and

payables – It seems like a small process, but you can manage your cash flow better when you work around the payable and receivable days. It may take 60 days to get paid from a client, but you may also have 60 days to pay your supplier. If you work around these timelines, you can establish a rhythm where you’re making your money go further in between paying and receiving payments.

• Keep up with the news - Changes in currency, government legislation, taxes and the stock market can impact your business. If you’re informed, you could make quick decisions that can save or make money.

Additional findings More than two-thirds of the small business owners surveyed, 68 per cent, used personal savings for their start-up financing, while 22 per cent secured financing from a bank or credit union. Only one per cent of small businesses se-

cured financing through online lenders or crowdfunding.

Chris Coyea has been named 2016 Citizen of the Year by the Brockville and District Chamber of Commerce.

Coyea “…volunteers in our community with zest and enthusiasm,” according to a recent chamber release. The music professor at St. Lawrence College organizes the Sunday in the Park summer concert series at Hardy Park in Brockville and is a founding member of Youth Opportunities in the Arts, a local organization that offer free instruction in music, painting and writing as well as mentorship to young people.

In addition to being involved in organizing joint concerts with brass bands at Remembrance Day, Coyea was also part of the Canadian flag 50th anniversary musical fundraiser for the United Way of Leeds and Grenville.

Brockville historian Doug Grant was the chamber’s citizen of the year recipient in 2014.

Coyea will be acknowledged at the business organization’s 2016 awards of excellence gala will be held at the Brockville Memorial Centre on Thursday, Nov. 10.

The Brockville Police Service is offering an electronic process for doing criminal record checks.

City residents now have the option of completing an application online and not having to start the process by visiting the police station on Parkedale Avenue, according to a release issued last Thursday. Unless the process requires an additional step such as fingerprints, applicants might not have to go to the station at all.

An electronic form can be accessed at www.brockvillepolice.com. Applicants can complete the form – depending on the type of check required – and submit it online. Brockville police can offer expedited service based on the nature of the system; most checks can be completed within 15 minutes, according to the release. Results are sent o the applicant via email. An electronic administration fee applies. The new system was developed under the auspices of a memo of understanding with Triton Canada Inc. In the past, applicants have to attend the station to have ID verified and to pick up the completed check.

In-person applications for criminal record checks will continue to be accepted. They can be made at the station on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call Brockville police at 613-342-0127 for more information. Do not call 911 to ask questions about record checks.

Youth program grants of up to $500 available

The United Way of Leeds & Grenville’s Youth to Youth Board is now accepting grant applications for youth initiatives across Leeds and Grenville.

Grants of up to $500 will be available for programs serving youth that focus on, but are not limited to the following: affordable youth activities, improving the lives of youth, giving youth a voice, pre-

paring youth for the future, health and physical education or broadening the skills of youth. Organizations who already receive funding from the local United Way are not eligible for Youth to Youth Board grants.

Grant applications will be accepted up to 3 p.m. on Oct. 30. Applications are available online at www. uwlg.org or can be picked up at the

United Way office at 42 George St. in downtown Brockville.

The Youth to Youth Board is a junior board of directors for the local United Way. Each of the nine high schools located in Leeds and Grenville has the opportunity to have representatives on the board.

Preparation Time: 25 minutes Baking Time: 40 minutes Serves: 9 Ingredients * 2 cups (500 mL) finely shredded carrots* 1-3/4 cups (425 mL) 2% milk * 1 tsp (5 mL) ground cardamom * 4 Ontario Eggs * 2/3 cup (150 mL) packed brown sugar * 1 cup (250 mL) 10% half-and-half cream * 1-1/2 tsp (7 mL) vanilla * 3/4 tsp (4 mL) ground cinnamon * 1/4 tsp (1 mL) ground nutmeg * 8 cups (2 L) day-old white bread cubes (1/2-inch/1 cm) * 2 cups (500 mL) chopped peeled apples (such as Empire, McIntosh or Cortland) * 1/2 cup (125 mL) golden raisins * 1/2 cup (125 mL) maple syrup Garnish: 35% whipped cream (optional) Preparation instructions In large saucepan, over medium heat, combine carrots, milk and cardamom. Bring to boil; reduce heat and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes or until carrots are tender. Let cool slightly.

In large bowl, with wooden spoon, beat eggs and brown sugar together until smooth. Stir in cream, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Slowly stir in carrot mixture. Stir in bread cubes, apples and raisins, making sure bread is moistened. Let stand for 15 minutes.

Pour into lightly buttered nine-inch (23 cm) square baking pan. Place pan into a slightly larger pan, filling larger pan halfway up the sides with boiling water. Bake in 350°F (180°C) oven for 35 to 40 minutes, until knife inserted in centre comes out clean. Let cool slightly on wire rack.

To serve, cut into squares and drizzle each with maple syrup. Garnish with a dollop of whipped cream (if using).

Autumn is great time to join cadets Parents and area youth; why not check out the fun and challenge that the Prescott-based Air Cadet squadron has to offer?

The local youth group meets at South Grenville District High School (SGDHS) each Tuesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m., and area residents interested in the program are encouraged to drop by and visit with Captain Lewis Jenkins, squadron commanding officer, any Tuesday this fall to learn more about membership and what the cadet program has to offer.

Families of interested youth may be surprised to learn that there are no membership fees to enroll in cadets and that uniforms are provided free of charge as well. Youth can join the program at any time during the school year (although the fall is most ideal) and can opt to leave whenever they wish. The main commitment to the program is regular training, which

There will be an increased enforcement presence at Conservation Areas owned by the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority (CRCA) during the next few weeks.

“There have been an increasing number of complaints from the public about off leash dogs on our properties,” CRCA Biologist/ Lands Lead Tom Beaubiah stated in a release last week. “All pets must be on a leash and stay on marked trails at all times when they are on our properties. We have asked our enforcement staff to focus on off-leash dogs for the next several weeks.”

Library friends offer a treat

The Friends of the Prescott Library will host a Howlin Halloween Party for local youngsters.

The event will take place at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. The two-hour party will include ghosts, poltergeists, local phantoms and scary stories (some of which are about Prescott) as well as a monster dance and Halloween costume parade.

“We encourage people to enjoy our areas, but they have to follow the rules,” Beaubiah added. “Not everyone is comfortable when a dog comes running at them. They can also chase and disturb wildlife, spread invasive species and damage sensitive habitat.”

Most conservation areas were purchased to protect natural wildlife habitat as well as providing public access to the outdoors. Enforcement officers will be enforcing the leash regulations on CRCA properties. Dog owners with off-leash dogs will receive a $75 ticket.

The enforcement blitz might be repeated without further notice to the public, according to the release.

CRCA oversees the Mac Johnson Wildlife Area.

Stone walling at Athens club

The founder and president of Dry Stone Walling Across Canada will be the guest speaker at this month’s meeting of the Athens Garden Club.

John Shaw-Rimmington will appear at the gathering to be held at Athens District High School next Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. The organization is committed to designing, repairing, preserving, teaching, and building traditional dry stone walls in Canada.

His knowledge of designing and building with stone has come after many years of doing

masonry restoration and gaining a comprehensive knowledge of traditional stonework here in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. Shaw-Rimmington provides numerous workshops and seminars teaching dry stone walling in locations throughout North America.
