Brockville YMCA giving campaign tops $348,000 By DOREEN BARNES
In addition to the video celebration of the D.B. Green Pool being available for 20 years, the YMCA of Brockville and Area hosted a Donor Appreciation Luncheon on Tuesday, Sept. 20 to thank a very generous community. As well, to thunderous applause, the unveiling of the total raised to date for the YMCA Strong Kids 2016 Annual Giving Campaign – $348,138 – was revealed. This campaign continues until the end of the year. On behalf of the Y’s Board of Directors, Chair Catherine Deplaedt said, “To be a Y kid means you have an army of people who care for you and you are taught to care for others and for yourself. Not just skills, but how to be a part of a community, how to give and how to receive. On behalf of the board, thank you. Our philanthropic work in support of our charitable work cannot happen without the wonderful support we receive from each of you.” Continuing, Deplaedt thanked the campaign leaders Mary Mansworth and Ian McFall for their time and energy. Guest speaker was Christina Fykes, whose family has benefitted from the annual giving campaign. She spoke from the heart to share her story, which had appeared in the Aug. 25 edition of St. Lawrence News. The YMCA of Brockville and Area does not turn away people because they cannot pay full membership fees. The staff and volunteers work extremely hard to raise the funds needed to help individuals access meaningful programs at the Y. The financial assistance program is all confidential. No one knows that a person is receiving a financial helping hand, unless they speak of it themselves. All children should have the opportunity to decide which programs they would like to be part of at their local YMCA, without worrying about money. It takes a community to raise a child, so call 613-3427961 or drop by the YMCA at 345 Park St., Brockville, with a donation.
