Create, participate and share. That's the tag line for the 2017 edition of Culture Days, a volunteerdriven initiative that celebrates local arts and heritage communities. Brockville Culture Days has been expanded this year to three days: Friday, Sept. 29 through Sunday, Oct. 1. Most of the local and free activities will take place on Saturday, Sept. 30. As was the case in years one and two of the Brockville-area initiative, a portion of King Street West between Perth and Buell streets will serve as the Culture Days hub. Numerous artists and groups will be on hand between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. That stretch of King will be closed to vehicles. Locations in several other communities in Leeds County have been added to the 2017 program. They include Mallorytown, Lyndhurst (an art tour on Oct. 1), Delta and Frankville. A media event to promote the local Culture Days was held on the ground of the Brockville Museum on Tuesday, Sept. 19. Russ Disotell, facilitator of the annual program, invited the public to come out and see the strength of the Brockville area's arts and cultural community. The list of local Culture Days participants is in the dozens; there are authors, painters and musicians as well as numerous groups and organizations that cover everything from danc-

It was time to raise a glass to honour two prominent Brockville lawyers, who are retiring after a combined century of service in the community. Friends, family, colleagues and clients gathered at the Aquatarium on Thursday, Sept. 14 to celebrate the retirement of senior partners Paul Fournier, centre front, and Neville Johnston, who was unable to attend because of a fracture to his leg the day prior to the event. Staff at Henderson Johnston Fournier who attended the event are, from left, Maggie Wheeler, Linda Campbell, Darby Mallory, Fournier, Dorothy Wade, barrister and solicitor Trea Tuck, Sierra Mark, Jessica Lee, Willa Osborne-Beatty and Jessica Byles. Tuck became managing partner in 2014, and will head the firm when Johnston and Fournier step down at the end of this year. Fournier noted he has had a “splendid career” and said he was pleased to have the opportunity at the retirement party to give thanks to so many people for more than 50 years of associations, loyalties and friendships.

CDSBEO names its next education director John Cameron will be the new director of education at the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO). The appointment is effective Jan. 1, 2018. Cameron, who was appointed to the position by the board of trustees on Tuesday, Sept. 19, is currently the associate director of education, with responsibilities that include supervision of Catholic schools in the Cornwall area. Cameron will succeed Wm. J. Gartland, whose impending retirement was announced in late August. CDSBEO Chair Todd Lalonde says that Cameron has a long-standing career in Catholic education. “Mr. Cameron’s dedication to Catholic education cannot be questioned. He has demonstrated for many years, his dedication to ensuring that students have the opportunity to flourish in a faith-filled learning environment. He is a strong advocate for our beliefs and values and I look forward to working closely with him in this new role," Lalonde stated in a board release issued on Wednesday. Over his 26-year career as an educator, Cameron has held positions including secondary teacher, viceprincipal, principal, superintendent and most recently associate director of education. His career began at St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School in Cornwall where he taught religious

the Adult and Continuing Education program, and the Student Success portfolio. He has acted as a mentor and guide for the CDSBEO Catholic student trustees, and as key facilitator for the CDSBEO Parent Involvement Committee. Cameron earned his Masters of Education from the University of Ottawa. Gartland expressed his confidence in the appointment. “Our board has benefited greatly from Mr. Cameron’s participation in planning for the needs of our system in his current capacity as associate director of education. I know that he will bring that same level of passion to this new position.” Cameron expressed his gratitude. “I am honoured to have been given this opportunity. Our board has seen much success under the direction of retiring Director of Education Wm. J. Gartland, and I look forward to building on those successes as I take on this exciting role. Over the years, I have enjoyed working with the board of trustees in my capacity as superintendent and associate director, and I look forward to continuing to work with them to nurture the hearts, minds, bodies and souls of our students.” CDSBEO covers eight counties and has about 12,800 students in 40 elementary and 10 secondary schools.

UCLG FIRE PREVENTION COMMITTEE 6 ST. LAWRENCE NEWS - Thursday, September 28, 2017

Brockville General Hospital Event supports local cardiovascular program makes progress: supervisor Brockville General Hospital (BGH) has unveiled its new board of directors. Board members were introduced during a media event held in the busy main foyer of the Charles Street site on Friday morning. BGH announced in early August that Jim Cooper and David Beatty were the first named to the new board, with Cooper serving as co-chair with hospital supervisor Kevin Empey through the current fiscal year. The other directors appointed to the new board are Michael Adamcryck, Tom Bingham, James Eastwood, Denise Kall, Catherine MacDonald, Sara Piracha, Dave Publow, Bob Snelgrove and Larry Vander Baaren. Empey was appointed supervisor by the provincial government last October, in response to what was described in a BGH release as “the hospital’s financial and operational struggle.” The board of governors, which had asked the province for assistance, was dissolved; as supervisor, Empey has the same authority as the board. The review of hospital operations has included leadership team changes and restructuring that included integrating BGH lab services with Kingston. As for a financial update and dealing with the deficit, the supervisor told the gathering on Friday that it appears the hospital is on track to have a balanced budget in 2017 and 2018, based on improvements being shown in some of the recent data. “I see the hard work is beginning to pay off,” said the supervisor, who reported that there are reductions in staff sick time and overtime. Empey described the hospital as an

Enjoy the music and fellowship County Road 5 will be heading east on Oct. 15. The bluegrass band will be featured at an evening of fellowship and music at St. James Anglican Church in Maitland on the Sunday. The evening begins at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served during intermission. A free-will offering will be accepted at the door. St. James is located on Church Street near County Road 15 just south of Augusta Township Fire Station 1. The four-piece acoustic band's blend of traditional bluegrass with folk, country, pop, and blues continues to be enjoyed at venues throughout the region. For more information, call Rev. ecosystem; any changes must be made carefully, and conditions should not become worse as a result of the transition. He believes the changes that have been or are being implemented are improving patient experience and the culture of the hospital. When asked in an interview how he would describe staff morale at BGH now compared to when he started there last fall, Empey indicated it is higher in general; however, he conceded that it is lower in certain departments impacted by restructuring. Nobody likes to have to deal with staff reductions, he noted. Although hospital officials have identified areas in which additional efficiencies could be achieved, Empey does not think there will be a need for further restructuring efforts. Cooper, one of the driving forces behind the annual palliative care golf tournament, told the gathering that he gets involved when he believes in a cause. “Why am I here? How could I not be?” he said of serving on the new board, adding that BGH is too important to let fail. It is expected that the new board of directors will begin to conduct regular meetings later this fall. Cooper is to assume the role of chair when Empey's mandate ends in 2018. The supervisor believed a recovery plan could be put together in eight months if it was "just a financial problem" at BGH. He doubled the transformation time after he was surprised to find that more work would be required to deal with he described as a "cultural problem" at the facility. Nick Vlacholias began his duties as president and CEO of BGH this summer. There were interim and acting CEOs in place following the sudden departure of former president and CEO Tony Weeks in July 2016.

COMMENTARY When winning is losing A recent report from provincial police in Quinte West serves as a reminder to use caution when someone visits your home and is unknown. We'd like to think that the vast majority of visitors/strangers do not have criminal motives, but it pays to be prepared for the exceptions. An elderly homeowner reported to police that she had received a call from an unknown female who claimed the homeowner had won a $500 gift card, and that a representative would deliver the card. An unknown male showed up later that day and presented a gift card, which police determined later was counterfeit and had no value. Mary waits for the feeling of accomplishment to settle in

Mother said I was old enough. There were many little chores I was already doing, like keeping the wood box full, and making sure the pan under the icebox didn’t overflow. And now Mother said I was old enough to make butter! I was both delighted and annoyed. Delighted because this was a very important job, and annoyed because we always churned on Saturday morning, and this new chore was certainly going to cut into my playtime. My sister Audrey, who up to then, was in charge of the churning, was more than happy to give it up. I certainly didn’t have to be taught how to do it. Goodness knows I watched Audrey every Saturday, and to me, all I had to do was sit on a chair, with the churn between my knees, and plop the plunger up and down in the cream until I made butter.

It was an early Fall day when Mother announced that was the Saturday when I would take on this new chore. The churn had been rolled into the kitchen, very carefully, because it was half full of cream, and a chair put in front of it. I was ready to begin. But Mother said I would have to put on a big pinny, and it didn’t take me long to find out why. I had watched Audrey often enough to know that you simply grabbed the plunger with both hands and pumped until you could feel

butter forming in the bottom of the churn. So I pulled up a chair, wrapped my bony knees around the churn, and began. Plop, plop, plop. I speeded up the pace, figuring the faster I went, the sooner I would be finished. The lid on the churn had a hole in the center big enough to give the plunger lots of room. It didn’t take me long to find out why I had to don the big flour-bag pinny. The cream splashed up through the hole, and since I was so much shorter than Audrey, much of it hit me square in the eyes, and the front of the pinny was soon covered too. Audrey said going faster did nothing to hasten the butter. She was right...my arms ached, and I could tell nothing was happening in the churn. Also, my bottom started to develop pins and needles, so I had to stop the process to fetch a cushion from the couch to sit on. It looked to

me like this was going to turn into an all-morning job. The wall clock ticked away, and I could feel my eyelids start to droop, and it felt like any minute I was going to keel over in a heap on the kitchen floor. And then it happened. The plunger was no longer splashing cream out the opening in the lid. It got heavier and heavier to pound, even Mother and Audrey who were doing other things in the kitchen, knew that the moment had come. They could tell by the sound! My arms felt like lead. Mother came over and lifted the lid, peered inside, and said, “Well, good for you, Mary. You have made your first batch of butter.” The rest of the job would be up to my sister and Mother. With a big flat wood scoop, the butter was moved to the largest bowl we owned, and without measuring, Mother tossed in

some salt. The butter was mixed and mixed until it was to Mother’s liking, and then pressed into the butter mold. Packed down until it was a solid mass, the butter was then released from the mold onto waxed paper. Audrey said it was exactly a pound when it came out. It would be wrapped and put in the ice box, some of it peddled door to door in Renfrew, and the rest of it used on our own table. I had never been so tired in my life. I went over to the creton couch by the stove, and stretched out, aching from top to bottom. I figured it was too soon to try to barter with my sister to change back to her making the butter, and me doing something that didn’t wear me down to a dishrag. MNRF announces results of blitz at Thousand Islands crossing Conservation officers with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) conduced an enforcement operation at the Thousand Islands border crossing from Aug. 25-27. Officers from Kemptville, Pembroke and Peterborough took part in the three-day initiative to check compliance with Ontario's fish and wildlife regulations. In all, 293 vehicles and 623 individuals from the United States were checked during the blitz. The officers laid nine charges and issued 13 warnings, according to an MNRF release dated Sept. 18. The wildlife-related infractions included failing to stop for a conservation officer, having an over limit of bass, sunfish and crappie, possessing fish unlawfully taken from another jurisdiction, and packaging fish in such a way that they cannot be counted or identified. The enforcement blitz also gave the conservation officers an opportunity to educate the public on invasive species and proper transportation of fish. Border points and roadside check stations are used occasionally by the ministry to enforce regulations. Natural resources-related violations can be reported to the ministry's tips line at 1-877-847-7667 or to Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1-800-222-8477.

So far, included in the lineup are: — Doug Smith, who played for the Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks, and Pittsburgh Penguins. He was selected second overall in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. — Rick Smith (no relation to Doug) was originally drafted by the Boston Bruins in the second round (seventh overall) in the 1966 NHL Amateur Draft. He played for the Boston Bruins, St. Louis Blues, Detroit Red Wings, and the Washington Capitals, winning the Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 1970. — Alyn McCauley played in the NHL for 10 years with the Toronto Maple Leafs, San Jose Sharks, and Los Angeles Kings. Prior to his NHL career, McCauley was named CHL Player of the Year for 1996—97 while a member of the Ottawa 67's. He was also a First Team All-Star in 1996 and 1997 and represented Canada at the 1996 and 1997 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, winning gold medals on both occasions. McCauley was born in Brockville but grew up in Gananoque. — Shawn Rivers played in the National Hockey League with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Prior to his professional career, he played for the St. Lawrence University Skating Saints. Also lined up for the CPHC event are OHL alumnus Brandon Prophet, Brett Gibson, Kevin Grimes, and Graeme Brown. Taking to the ice for the local dignitaries and members of parliament are former minister of jus-

tice and attorney general of Canada, The Honourable Peter McKay; Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader Patrick Brown; and Clark, Brown, and Henderson. The co-chairs are still finalizing the roster. “I am look forward to seeing our co-chairs on the ice with what sounds like a great roster of players,” Rosemary Nichol, CPHC executive director, stated in a release issued on Wednesday, Sept. 20. The night will start off with the introduction of the players as they take to the ice, followed by a special performance by Thousand Islanders Chorus with the singing of two Canadian songs. The game will consist of two 20-minute periods, with a 20-minute intermission. Starting off the intermission will be a short game of hockey with local novice kids, then brief speeches, and ending with the Return Flight Raffle Draw. Tickets for the Charity Hockey Challenge are just $5 and can be purchased at the door or by calling Crystal at CPHC 613342-3693, ext. 2072. To show support for the Hockey Challenge, Air Canada came in as a major sponsor by donating two economy-class return tickets to any Air Canada destination of the winner's choice. CPHC has created a raffle for these return tickets, which are now available. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the game or by calling Crystal. Keep watch, as CPHC will also be selling the raffle tickets out in the community at local businesses. “I can’t say enough about MP Gord Brown, MPP Steve Clark, and Mayor Henderson, whose efforts in supporting CPHC and ensuring this event is a great success have been truly amazing,” said Nichol. CPHC is a registered charity that provides a variety of services and support to seniors and their caregivers. CPHC strives to deliver as many programs surrounding seniors and those living with a disability as they possibly can. The goal is to keep clients safely in their own homes for as long, healthy, and safe as possible, because that is where they want to be. Some of the major services are InHome Respite Care, Caregiver Support (Education and Counselling), Lifeline, Meals on Wheels, Transportation, Adult Day Service, Foot Care, and Diners Clubs.

martial arts, weapons and Islam. His plan is to infiltrate the terrorist group responsible for killing his fiancée and kill them all. It almost works. He manages to get face-to-face with the leader of the terrorist group when the Navy Seals burst in. They kill everyone and take Mitch back home. Mitch winds up at the CIA where assistant director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) makes Mitch an offer. She wants him to join her secret team of CIA assassins. Mitch is given to Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton) to be trained. Mitch is skilled, gifted even, but he has issues taking orders. Nonetheless when someone starts to put together a nuclear bomb Mitch is put on the team to stop those responsible. Things go wrong quickly, and Mitch finds himself up against one of Stan's former students. He calls himself Ghost (Taylor Kitsch), and he has his own agenda. American Assassin is one of those films where there's nothing particularly awful. It's shot well. The action is well executed. The acting is decent,

and the story is believable enough to maintain suspension of disbelief … kind of. The violence goes to a level of graphicness I’m not sure is necessary, though that does play into how badly this film wants to be taken seriously. The problem comes from the fact this is a typical spy versus spy movie. It's formulaic and predictable. There's no surprises, and nothing really new. Cast wise there isn't a lot to say. Dylan O'Brian does a fair job as the brooding action hero. Sanaa Lathan, Shiva Negar and Taylor Kitsch play their roles well even if they are playing stock characters. The brightest spot is getting to watch Michael Keaton do what he does. When he commits to a role he commits mind, body and soul. I get the sense that Michael Cuesta is working hard to create a serious, intense and dramatic action film. He pulls out all the stops to get you emotionally involved in the story and the characters, but he's hamstrung by the movie's predictability. Mark Haskins’ column is a regular feature.

Upper Canada Playhouse will be Full of Beans as of Oct. 10 There are a few things on which most folks can count every two years: a wicked snowstorm, a bad head cold, a political scandal, and a new show from Lucien and Jimmy the Janitor. Seasoned performers Sandy Gillis and Marshall Button have once again teamed up to write and perform their brand new comedy, Full of Beans, at Upper Canada Playhouse in Morrisburg. There will be eight performances from Oct. 10-15. This new show is the fourth in a series of original creations by the duo over the past seven years. Following the success of their 2015 smash hit Fort Mac Attack, their latest comedy promises both hilarity and philanthropy by giving audiences tons of laughs and asking them to bring cans of beans with them when they attend the show to be donated to the local Community Food Share, according to a release. Button and Gillis first teamed up in Moncton, N.B. in the fall of 1997 when they formed the creative nucleus for the popular cable TV show Late Night Live at the Empress. From 2001-07 they joined their friends Blair Lawrence, John McMaster, Michelle Daigle, and Michael R. LeBlanc for

an annual tour of The HubCap Comedy Revue. Full of Beans is a brand new hilarious show that will continue the rich tradition of poking fun at things monumental and trivial while having a blast and simply enjoying the act of being silly. Jimmy and Lucien find themselves back in the East Coast after a failed excursion to Fort McMurray. Down on their luck, they realize they have no money and are down to their very last can of beans. With a single can as a starting point, the laughter builds as they figure out how to jump-start their lives by opening that last can and laughing in the face of gas. Full of Beans promises to be an explosive comedy providing plenty of laughs for people of all ages. Originally scheduled for four shows, the playhouse has added an additional four to accommodate popular demand. Although some seats are still available, audiences are encouraged to contact the box office as soon as possible. Showtimes are 2 and 8 p.m. Call 613-543-3713, or toll-free 1-877-5503650, or visit uppercanadaplayhouse. com.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms: Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that can be deadly. This toxic gas is a by-product of the incomplete combustion of fuels such as natural gas, oil, gasoline or wood.

The Birds and The Bees will create quite a buzz The Thousand Islands Playhouse in Gananoque is closing the season with a raucously funny new comedy that tackles sex, love, science, family, and the artificial insemination of turkeys. Set in a rural Canadian community, it is nearly time for the last-ever annual Turkey Days Festival and the excitement in town is palpable. Sarah, a turkey farmer, has just left her husband and moved back home with her mother, a beekeeper. They live across the road from Earl, a farmer who’s been keeping busy with a long list of ladies ever since his divorce. Things get interesting when Ben, a hot young grad student, arrives to study the declining bee population. The Birds and The Bees runs at the Springer Theatre from Sept. 22 to Oct. 15.

“The Birds and The Bees is a hilarious look at love in the real world,” says artistic director Ashlie Corcoran, who is directing the piece. “After its premiere last summer at the Blyth Festival, this piece has become a hit across the country.” This production will be Corcoran’s finale as artistic director. The piece is written by Mark Crawford, the playwright behind the hit-show Bed and Breakfast (2015) – a play about a couple who move out of the quick-paced city to set up a B&B in a quiet little tourist town. Crawford was born and raised on a cattle farm in southern Ontario, which allows him to easily tap into the authentic rural experience in his plays. The cast includes familiar faces Nicola

Lipman (Driving Miss Daisy – 2014), Naomi Wright (Das Ding (The Thing) - 2016), and John Jarvis (The Love List – 2013) alongside Christopher Allen making his TIP debut. The show is produced in association with Western Canada Theatre and will be performed in Kamloops in January. The production features set design from Jung-Hye Kim, costume design from Jayne Christopher, lighting design by Rebecca Picherak, sound design by Doug Perry, stage management by Natasha Bean-Smith, with associate director Heather Cant and assistant stage manager Jessica Severin. The Birds and the Bees has a run time of two hours plus intermission. Tickets are $20 to $35, with discounts for seniors and youth. Those who like to experiment with colour may find that they like to switch out the colours now and again. Instead of having to repaint every few months, use decorative items in bright shades to make swapping out colour that much easier. For example, replace

area rugs, throw pillows and draperies. Paint over terra cotta flower pots when the mood strikes.

Establish balance Rely on neutral furniture, rugs, mouldings and baseboards if you decide to take bold colours up a notch. This will help create a sense of balance in the room.

Buy one, get one FREE*

Try bold in a small space Many people are surprised at how well bold colours work in small spaces. Powder rooms can be an ideal spot to experiment with paint colours. Try deep colours that can make the area seem intimate and even exotic. Dark, bold hues can be toned down by different accents, such as neutral coloured fixtures and towels.

It’s all about the copper! A versatile metal, copper is widely used in numerous industries (agriculture, transportation, telecommunications, healthcare, architecture, art, design, etc.). Equally popular in interior design, copper is favoured for its authentic character that can be either minimalist or glamorous in style. Read on to find out how to bring this sophisticated metal into your home!

Furniture and accessories

Lustrous or oxidized? Since copper has a tendency to tarnish with time, your favourite décor items may become discoloured as the years go by. If you like the old-fashioned look of vintage designs — which happen to be in vogue this year — then all the better! However, if you’d prefer to restore your copper accessories’ original lustre, simply sprinkle a lemon wedge with salt and gently rub it against your tarnished items. Rinse well with lukewarm water, and you’re done!

Copper (or copper alloy) is used in the manufacturing of countless décor items and practical household objects. By visiting speciality retailers in your region, you can find light fixtures, mirrors, clocks, potholders, kitchen utensils and office equipment, among a myriad of other items, that feature the metal with varying prominence. In terms of furniture, your options are just as varied. Copper-accented end tables, chairs, shelves and stools, for example, add warmth to any interior. Are you crazy for copper? Opt for copper handles on your bathroom or kitchen cabinets, and install a faucet with a matching finish.

Best Management Practices for Drinking Water Threats: Agricultural Operations Agricultural operations rely on clean, safe water for drinking, livestock and irrigation. To avoid the possible contamination of water sources, farmers should employ these best management practices in their operations: • Prevent pollutants from seeping into the ground or entering into runoff by reducing or eliminating the use of chemicals and fertilizers on your land. • Manage animal waste on farms to prevent water contamination. • Protect the vegetation along the banks of ponds, streams and lakes to help control erosion, provide food for aquatic life, and maintain cooler water temperatures necessary for some species of fish. • Manage livestock grazing. Overgrazing exposes soil and increases erosion. Keep livestock out of ponds, rivers and streams and other sensitive areas such as wetlands. This not only protects the natural areas around the pasture, but keeps your herd productive and happy. • Store chemicals in a dry, properly ventilated and secure area. Keep chemicals and pesticides away from surface water, wells and other vulnerable areas. • Properly install and operate fuel storage tanks to prevent spills. For more information on best management practices for agricultural operations and more, view this PDF from Conservation Ontario: http://goo.gl/OZW6rC or visit their website at www.conservationontario.ca

Run to Remember participants arrive at a ceremony on Court House Green in downtown Brockville late Friday afternoon, Sept. 22. The annual peace officers’ memorial run stops in Brockville on its way from Toronto to Ottawa for the yearly national service on Parliament Hill

Brockville area welcomes peace officer memorial run and ride TIM RUHNKE truhnke@metroland.com

It has become a late-September tradition. The National Peace Officers' Memorial Run was in the Leeds and Grenville area on Friday and Saturday. Run to Remember is a 460-km relay from Toronto to Parliament Hill that leads up to the annual national memorial service on Sunday for peace officers who have lost their

lives in the line of duty. The run made its way into the Leeds and Grenville area on Friday morning. The relay arrived in downtown Brockville late Friday afternoon; participants made their way down King Street and gathered on Court House Green for the annual ceremony. See Memorial page 17

2017 Final Tax Bills The 2017 Final Tax Bills were mailed in June and included two installments; July 21st and September 22nd. Failure to receive a tax bill in the mail does not excuse the taxpayer from the responsibility of payment, nor does it relieve the liability of penalty for late payment. When using online, telephone, or automated banking, it’s important to make payments at least 3 business days prior to the tax due date in order to meet payment deadlines. Please note that there is a drop off box beside the council entrance door for after hour payments.

Christmas at Elizabethtown-Kitley Farmers’ Market Don’t miss out and come enjoy the atmosphere of your local country market. They will be holding their ‘Christmas at the Market’ on Sunday, October 8th from noon until 4:00 p.m. in the parking lot at the Public Library, 4103 County Road 29.

Fire Prevention Week, October 8th – 14th, 2017 “Every Second Counts – Plan 2 ways out!” Smoke and fire spread fast. There’s no time to figure out how to escape after a fire starts. It is important that everyone has working smoke alarms in their home and that they practice a home fire escape plan with everyone in their household before there’s a fire.

Library Week October 15th to 21st, 2017 October is Canadian Library Month! During this month, libraries and library partners across Canada raise awareness of the valuable role libraries play in Canadians’ lives. In Ontario, we celebrate our public libraries during Ontario Public Library Week - October 15 to 21, 2017.

MEMORIAL

From page 16

It was noted at the gathering that it had been almost 10 years since the death of RCMP officer Doug Scott, who was killed in Nunavut. Family members taking part in the memorial ride that coincides with the run were acknowledged at the ceremony; it was also noted that there were 19 cyclists from the RCMP. Sgt. Darryl Boyd, president of the Brockville Police Association, acknowledged the run and ride participants who are honouring and creating awareness "for all our heroes." There was also a special presentation at the local ceremony to Randy Patrick, the Cardinal native and senior officer with Peel Regional Police who spearheaded the memorial run and served as event chair for many years. The memorial run resumed on Saturday morning; participants left downtown and continued along County Road 2 to Cardinal before heading north to Ottawa. Ride to Remember Brockville was also a stop as part of the National Peace Officers' Memorial Ride. The annual journey begins at the Ontario Police College in Aylmer and, like the Run to Remember, ends in Ottawa ahead of the national memorial service. The cyclists — more than 150 — also arrived in the city later in the afternoon shortly before the runners. Most of the cyclists went directly to the Canadian Tire store on Parkedale Avenue. They were greeted by those gathered in the parking lot as part of a barbecue celebration at which bicycles and helmets were presented by Canadian Tire to 50 local youngsters as part of the Jumpstart initiative. Ride participants pitched in and interacted with the recipients, who then took part in a bicycle safety course led by Brockville police. Store co-owner Catherine Deplaedt presented a contribution of $10,000 from Canadian Tire to the memorial ride. Also on hand were Brockville Mayor David Henderson and Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark, who noted at the store and the Court House Green ceremony that his son Mitch is a police officer in Edmonton. "We respect the uniform that you wear," the MPP stated. Canadian Tire is a premier sponsor of the ride. Some of the cyclists stopped in downtown Brockville for the ceremony on Court House Green. The memorial ride hit the road on Saturday morning, heading east on

HOME SAFETY TIPS

Retiring in the next five years?

Smoke Alarms: Test your smoke alarms. If a fire starts in your home while you are asleep, you want to know about it immediately. Some homes are equipped with electrically connected smoke alarms that may not work when the power is out. Make sure your home has a batteryoperated smoke alarm on every level.

Home Escape Planning: Good fire safety planning includes knowing two ways out of your home. In a winter storm, your exits may become blocked by snow or fallen trees, or be frozen shut by ice. Try your exits to make sure they are accessible.

your condition you will be asked to have a seat in the waiting room. If you need to leave the waiting room for any reason, please let the triage nurse know. Why do I have to wait to get care in the Emergency Department? Even though doctors and nurses are always working in the ED, there are often many patients who arrive in a short period of time. This makes it challenging to see everyone in a timely fashion. Sometimes, critically ill patients arrive that require the immediate attention of many staff to help them Once you have been registered, the staff in ED are aware that you are waiting to be seen. Each patient will be called in to see the physician as soon as possible. It seems like I have been forgotten in the waiting room. Is there anything I can do? BGH’s Emergency Department sees about 28,000 patients each year. Patients rarely get overlooked; however, this can happen if you leave the ED for a few minutes and your name is called. Please let the triage nurse know if you are leaving the department for any reason. If you have been waiting for more than 90 minutes and have not been seen, please check with the triage nurse. Can I eat or drink anything while I’m waiting to be seen? Please check with the triage nurse prior to eating or drinking. Depending on your condition, certain tests and/or treatments may require you to have an empty stomach. These could be delayed if you have recently consumed food or beverages. How long will I be in the Emergency Department? The length of time you will spend in the Emergency Department depends on how long it takes to see a physician, what kinds of test and treatments you require and how many patients are in the Emergency Department. For example, it can take about 60 minutes to get the results of a blood test, 30 minutes to get the results of a simple X-ray and a minimum of one hour for a CT scan. The time will be increased if it requires additional measures before it is performed and interpreted. Sometimes, you will need observation in the ED to insure that the treatments you received are helping the nature of your problem before the doctor will discharge you home. For more information about the emergency department, visit bgh-on. ca. Submitted by Brockville General Hospital.

Deborah Dunleavy to perform at Christ United Church in Lyn

Tim Ruhnke/Metroland

SMA Karate officially opens location in Brockville

Brockville Mayor David Henderson (right) chats with youngsters before a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the SMA Karate location in the Wall Street United Church Hall on Friday, Sept. 15. The Kingston-based outfit offers the only local karate school that is sanctioned by the Ontario Karate Federation, according to instructor Rob Patry. For more information, visit www.smadojo.com.

The year is 1805. A young Orkney lass brazenly disguises herself as a boy and is hired on with the Hudson Bay Company. Their destination — the vast area of wilderness known as Rupert’s Land. This gruelling adventure is brought to life by international storyteller Deborah Dunleavy, who wrote the libretto when the Canada Council for the Arts awarded her a grant to create Isobel Gunn. She collaborated with her husband Howard Alexander, who scored the original music. This artistic fusing of talents has resulted in a unique art form of storytelling and opera, according to a release. Every note and every word relies on the other. In the performance, Dunleavy takes on the role of Isobel Gunn in the years between 1805 and 1808, and in the final days of her life some 60 years later. Based on true accounts, the piece unfolds as an epic poem crafted by Deborah and set to orchestrated music by

composer Howard. Dunleavy portrayed Isobel Gunn in Toronto, Burlington and At the Words Alive Festival in Newmarket in 2016. She toured Isobel Gunn to Vancouver Island, where it was enthusiastically received by a sold-out audience. Brockville-area residents will have a rare opportunity to see the production in the sanctuary of Christ United Church, 12 Perth St. in the Village of Lyn on Thursday, Oct. 19. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the one-act performance commences at 7. Cost is $15 Following the performance, refreshments will be offered as well as an opportunity to meet with the performer and composer. Dunleavy's books and recordings will be on sale at that time. Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling Brenda at 613-3451487 or Deborah at 613-926-5510.

• Dynamic Value Balanced Fund – series T • Number of Units Purchased: 23201.85615 • NAV Price/Unit (as of August 31, 2017): $4.3100 • Monthly Distribution Amount: $0.019** *Actual amount may vary. **Targeted monthly distribution rates are based on the net asset value per unit of a fund as at the fund’s previous year-end. Target distributions are not guaranteed and may change at any time at the discretion of the fund’s Manager. If distributions paid by the fund are greater than the performance of the fund, distributions paid may include a return of capital and an investor’s original investment will shrink. A return of capital is not taxable to the investor, but will generally reduce the adjusted cost base of the securities held for tax purposes. If the adjusted cost base falls below zero, investors will realize capital gains equal to the amount below zero. Distributions are automatically reinvested unless an investor elects to receive them in cash. Investors should not confuse a fund’s distribution rate with its performance, rate of return or yield.
