They're up for the challenge. United Way supporters gathered at 1000 Islands Village near Maitland on Thursday morning to launch the 2017 Leeds and Grenville campaign. The fundraising goal this year is $825,000. The local United Way has 20 member agencies that offer programs and services in the Leeds and Grenville area. United Way executive director Trish Buote emphasized that the money raised locally stays in the area. The 2016 Leeds and Grenville campaign raised about $805,600; the total was about $825,000 in 2015. The United Way drive topped $1.1 million in 2014. United Way officials believe that this year's target is achievable, according to Buote. Tammy Sokolowski, chair of the local United Way board, acknowledged that the organization has had a couple of challenging years and faces challenges again in 2017. However, she is confident that this year's campaign will do "an amazing job" on behalf of what Sokolowski referred to as one of the best organizations in Leeds and Grenville. Guest speaker Brenda Benoit said the she has come full circle with the local United Way. The former P&G Brockville campaign team member shared her family's story; Benoit has been making use of the services of

& Diamonds Gala on Nov. 25. The date of the Starlight Film Festival for high school students has not been announced. MP Gord Brown noted at the launch that an event involving local elected officials and the public will be announced shortly. He added that a big event is being planned for 2018. "I am absolutely excited," Brown said of the campaign. He noted the positive momentum on the part of the board, cabinet and volunteers. "We're all going to work hard." Brockville Mayor David Henderson referred to the resilience that P&G workers and the city have shown and recalled the lesson he learned from his father about getting up the next morning and going at it again. It's the same way for the United Way and the challenges it has faced, according to the

mayor. "This is another start for us," he commented. Buote had opened the event by talking about her late father and how she admires the approach he took to giving back to his community: in order to keep it, you must give it away. She encouraged the volunteers to go out and share that philosophy as they seek support for the campaign. For more information about the Leeds and Grenville United Way or to make a donation, call 613-342-8889 or visit uwlg.org. This is Buote's first campaign as executive director. She succeeded Melissa Hillier this spring. 1000 Islands Village is located at Monica Mroz/Metroland the former Grenville Christian College site. Class is in for 40 youths who participated in the annual Leeds County 4-H Showcase, held at the Lansdowne

Fairgrounds on Sept. 16. Here, Judge Kevin McLean provides instruction on controlling calves to 4-H members who took part in the novice showmanship class; there were also goat, dairy and sheep competitions. Grand champion in the Overall Livestock Showperson event was Kendra Walski of Lansdowne; reserve champion was Carina Walski of Lansdowne; Shayna Dickson of Smiths Falls took the honourable mention title. The Lyn/Athens Dairy Club won the tie-up competition. The Leeds 4-H awards night will take place Nov. 17 at the Toledo Legion Hall. 4-H is a non-profit youth development organization that was founded more than 100 years ago to teach agricultural skills with a focus on head, heart, hands and health. The club has since evolved to help cultivate leadership and life skills.

Police run, ride to stop in Brockville Two annual events that honour peace officers who lost their lives in the line of duty will make their way through the Leeds and Grenville area on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 22-23. Runners and cyclists are once again making their way to Ottawa in the lead-up to the yearly ceremony on Parliament Hill that will take place on Sunday, Sept. 24. Both the National Peace Officers' Memorial Run and the Canadian Police Memorial Ride to Remember are scheduled to arrive in Brockville late Friday afternoon. The public is invited to join law enforcement runners on County Road 2 at Lyn Road as they enter Brockville and take King Street into downtown and stop for a ceremony at the Court House Green. The downtown ceremony is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The 2017 run from Toronto and the local stop have added significance, notes a Brockville Police Service release. It marks the 10th anniversary of the death of RCMP officer Douglas Scott of Lyn. Family members are taking part in the run. The memorial run resumes in downtown Brockville on Saturday morning. The relay will continue east on County Road 2 into Edwardsburgh Cardinal before heading north to Ottawa.

Participants raise money for the memorial by selling run shirts; donations and sponsorships are also accepted. Visit npomr.org. The annual police memorial ride from the Ontario Police College in Aylmer to Ottawa starts on Wednesday and is scheduled to make a stop in Brockville late Friday afternoon. The local event will take place at the Canadian Tire store; riders are scheduled to arrive at about 5 p.m. There will be a brief ceremony followed by a barbecue. Canadian Tire, a ride sponsor, will donate 50 bicycles and helmets to local youths through its Jumpstart program. City police will lead a bicycle safety course at the event. The memorial ride will also leave Brockville on Saturday morning as the cyclists make their way to Ottawa for the ceremony on Sunday. Several members of the Brockville Police Service are taking part in the memorial ride and run as participants or in a support capacity along the routes. Brockville is a popular stop for runners and cyclists, according to the city police release; they often comment on how warm and friendly the community is to participants as well as how nice the waterfront is. The ride is also scheduled to stop in Gananoque.

Next Brockville blood donor clinic is Monday Monthly blood donor clinics are held at the Brockville Memorial Centre. The next clinic is set for Monday, Sept. 25 from 1 to 7 p.m. All blood types are needed. Walk-ins will be accepted. The process of donating blood takes about an hour. Canadian Blood Services will also hold a clinic at the Carveth Care Centre in Gananoque

on Oct. 20. To book an appointment to give the gift of life in Gananoque or Brockville, call 1-888-2DONATE or visit blood.ca. Next month's clinic at the memorial centre will take place on Oct. 30. Most Canadian citizens who are at least 17 years old and are in good general health are eligible to give blood.

Terry Fox Run is still moving forward The legacy of Terry Fox carries on 37 years later. Events were held in several communities in the southern portion of the Leeds and Grenville area on Sunday, Sept. 17. The annual Terry Fox Run has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for cancer research through the foundation named in memory of the one-legged runner who was in his early 20s when he set out on his Marathon of Hope across Canada in 1980. Well over 100 people gathered at Thousand Islands Secondary School (TISS) for the Brockville Terry Fox Run early Sunday afternoon. Ted Raby, organizer of the Brockville event, is a twotime cancer survivor. "My story is not unique," he told participants at the start of the event. In thanking the 40 volunteers who were pitching in at the fundraiser, Raby also acknowledged the many first-time participants in the Terry Fox Run. The group included a large entry from Fulford Academy. "I met Terry Fox," Raby said. "He's a Cana-

dian hero." Fox was midway through his cross-country journey when he was forced to stop the marathon; his cancer had returned. Terry Fox died the following year. Initial returns indicated that the Brockville event raised more than $10,000 for the foundation. Results from the other local events on Sept. 17 were unavailable when St. Lawrence News went to press. "We've got to eradicate cancer," proclaimed Raby, who added that the way to do it is by supporting research and treatment. Participants led by piper Stewart Nimmo made their way around the TISS track before leaving the school property to follow the route through the north end of the city. Don and Pam Russell, longtime organizers of the Terry Fox Run in Brockville, were acknowledged in a letter from the foundation that Raby read at the start of the event on Sunday. The shallow end of the D.B. Green Pool at the YMCA of Brockville and Area begins to fill with guests at a special fundraiser on Saturday night, Sept. 9. An Empty Pool Party took place in the aquatic facility that was closed temporarily for maintenance and upgrades. The pool area, which is now in its third decade of operation, is receiving a major facelift. The pool logs more than 60,000 splashes (entries) each year.

Empty Pool Party nets $63,000 for the YMCA and upgrades. The party netted $63,418, the YMCA reported on Monday. This includes event supporters, ticket sales and donations, according to a release. More than 50 people did the behindthe-scenes tour to check out the new filters, boiler and hot water on demand.

"We have an awesome community," the release states. The D.B. Green Pool has been operating for 21 years and is the only aquatic centre of its kind in the region. The facility reopened on Monday, Sept. 18. For more information, visit brockvilley.com.

Ann Weir receives economic development award Ann Weir is the BDC Ontario Economic Development Officer of the Year. Kevin Coleman of the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) presented the award at the opening ceremonies of the annual Ontario East Municipal Conference (OEMC) at Kingston’s Ambassador Hotel on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Weir is manager of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville Economic Development Office. “I’m very honoured to receive this award. It was a complete surprise,” Weir said. “I want to share it with my team, Deanna Clark and Joanne Poll, and with thanks to a supportive counties council, our member municipalities and their committees.” The BDC Ontario East Economic Developer of the Year Award is presented annually to an economic developer based in eastern Ontario who has provided exceptional performance in his or her community and contributed to the advancement of the economic development profession, according to a counties release. “Ann has many achievements in economic development and success in facilitating tourism investment, a strategic priority for eastern Ontario,” said Rita Byvelds, team lead with the Ministry of Economic Development & Growth; Research, Innovation and Science. Byvelds submitted the nomination. She noted Weir was instru-

mental in bringing Europe’s le Boat to the Rideau Canal and securing a $16-million investment to the region. Le Boat is Europe’s largest operator of self-drive boating vacations. “Ann believes in collaboration and teamwork and I know she would want to attribute the successes to the leadership of the united counties, her colleagues, her counterparts and volunteers across the region and Ontario East, and to Noreen Cartwright at the Ministry of Tourism,” Byvelds said. Among her many achievements, Weir was involved in securing the Gi-

ant Tiger Distribution Centre in Edwardsburgh Cardinal, which is opening in 2018. She has helped many businesses launch or expand in Leeds Grenville, including King’s Lock Craft Distillery, Windmill Brewery, Canadian Rail Equipment Works and Services (CREWS) and Advonex International, which recently held its grand opening in Elizabethtown-Kitley. Weir helped launch the 1000 Islands and Rideau Canal Garden Trail in 2015. The garden trail was selected to be on the esteemed “Canada 150 Garden Experience” list this year.

Canadian Forces brought the historic fort to life. The annual community Canada Day at the fort provided fun for all ages, and the 2017 season also marked the triumphant return of Prescott’s famous Loyalist Days Festival and re-enactment. Along with special events, many visitors took part in interactive programming including guided tours, the fire-a-cannon program, whisky tastings, and fort kids camp days. Fort Wellington participated in two major national Canada 150 signature projects: Canada C3 and the Tall Ships Rendezvous. Participants on the first leg of the Canada C3 vessel were given the opportunity to fire authentic cannons on the fort field when the vessel landed at Prescott in June. In July, the fort’s cannons and crew were called into action to participate in salutes and presentations at the Tall Ships Rendezvous in Halifax. Parks Canada has reported record visitation across its network during Canada 150.

COMMENTARY Feeding the tax habit With the provincial government's recent announcement about Ontario's framework to manage federal legalization of cannabis, we are once again wondering about the extent to which bureaucracy will grow in order to manage legal weed and ensure that governments receive their share of revenue from its sale. In noting the time and effort that law enforcement spends dealing with existing laws prohibiting the use and distribution of small amounts of pot, police will now have to prepare for whatever new regulations are put into place to ensure that government-sanctioned sales through standalone cannabis stores and an online order service overseen by the LCBO can be maximized. It will be interesting to see how enforcement will work; it would only be legal to use recreational marijuana in private residences, according to the approach put forward by the government last week. We don't take issue with the province's proposal to set 19 as the minimum age to use, purchase or possess recreational cannabis; it matches the legal drinking age as well as the sale of tobacco. And at least Ontario appears to be ahead of the pack, as it is the first province or territory to make public its approach to marijuana oversight. We also acknowledge the quotes from cabinet ministers about protecting communities and roads (consumption inside a motor vehicle would reportedly be prohibited) as well as young people and so-called "vulnerable populations" in terms of public health and harm reduction. It's another example of the balancing act that governments must conduct with adult behaviour. Make an effort to mitigate the harmful effects of a product or experience by way of public awareness campaigns or addiction treatment funding, but continue to reap the benefits. We see it with cigarettes and alcohol Tim Ruhnke/Metroland and gambling, and marijuana will soon be added to the list. Audrey’s essay leaves Mary feeling very grateful You didn’t have to guess what grade Miss Crosby was talking to in our one room schoolhouse. She had only to look down from her desk and cast her eyes on those she wished to speak to, and the rest of us were expected to keep ourselves busy. That day she told the Senior Fourths, my sister and brother’s grade, that she had a special lesson for them. They were to write an essay on all the things that made them happy, and grateful. It was their homework, and Miss Crosby gave them a week to do it in. As often happened when my sister Audrey was doing her homework at the kitchen table at night, she would take a piece of paper and hand me a pencil, and she would print simple words, and I would have to copy them to improve on my printing. I had yet to learn to write. She would do the same with simple arithmetic sums, and I was never sure if

what Audrey did was because she was anxious that I keep up with those in my grade at school, or if she was practicing to be a teacher, which was what she dreamed of being when she was finished at the Northcote School. And so when she was working at the table that night on her essay, she seemed very deep in thought, and she kept looking my way, and once she even patted my hand and smiled. I thought this all very odd, but then, it was pretty hard for me, so much younger than Audrey to second

guess what was on her mind. It was getting close to bedtime, and I asked Audrey if she would read to me what she had written. She said she had a lot more to write, and besides, she didn’t think Miss Crosby would want anyone else to read it before she handed it in. I certainly wasn’t going to question my sister, but I would sure have loved to hear what made her happy and grateful. And I wondered if she dared to write that when Mother bought her her very first bra at Walker’s Store, she said she was never as happy in her whole life! Gone were the strips of flour bagging that she tied around her chest! Could that be what she was writing about? No, because it wasn’t unusual for Miss Crosby to read what a pupil had written if she thought it deserved it. And that would mortify my shy sister Audrey! Well, every night Audrey got out her

scribbler and wrote, erased, wrote, and erased some more. My brothers had finished long ago, and had already handed in their essays to Miss Crosby. And then just the day it was due, Audrey gave it one final read, and put it on the corner of the teacher’s desk. I thought I would never know what had taken Audrey so long to write. And then the day came when Miss Crosby had read all the essays, and handed them back. I saw that my sister had three gold stars on the top sheet. One star was a real honour... but three stars were right up there with getting top honours in the spelling bee! Audrey quickly tucked the sheets into her book bag. It was many weeks later when my best friend Velma was over to play, and I found Audrey’s essay in the back of her washstand drawer, and I asked Velma if she would read it to me. Velma was in one grade higher than I was, smart as a whip, and had long since

learned to write instead of print, and could also read. Well! What a revelation! Audrey had written what made her happiest was when she read to me at night before we went to bed. She said just watching me, her little sister, smile, and sometimes laugh, or stay perfectly still as the story unfolded, brought her the utmost happiness, and then she finished her essay by saying she was grateful she had a little sister like Mary! I didn’t let on to Audrey that I knew what her essay was about, but I knew I too had something to be both happy and grateful for, for a very long time to come. Homeward Bound graduates to further their education Shoppers Drug Mart The Homeward Bound Brockville program has awarded the first tuition scholarships to its graduates. These recipients were acknowledged during a brief ceremony at St. Lawrence College in Brockville on Sept. 7. All three are set to further their educations at St. Lawrence College after having completed the earlier part of the Homeward Bound Brockville program. The recipients are Courtney Barrington, Tenisha Poelstra, and Mia Teal. Homeward Bound is an innovative program that helps single mothers earn college diplomas, gain employment, and achieve economic selfsufficiency. The first group of participants in the program took part earlier this year. Homeward Bound Brockville started in late 2016 and is based on a similar program to help lift single mothers out of poverty which has operated in Toronto by Wood Green Community Services. The Homeward Bound program is offered by The Employment + Education Centre and is funded through the Ontario Trillium Foundation. “I am very proud of the scholarship recipients for all their hard work and efforts,” Loretta Corbeil, program manager for Homeward Bound Brockville, stated in a release distributed on Sept. 11. “The first cohort of Homeward Bound Brockville participants have been very successful; four women obtained their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), six women were accepted into college programs, and one woman gained full-time employment.” Corbeil adds: “We will continue to build the scholarship fund so that more single moms in our community will be given the opportunity

Shoppers Drug Mart has begun its monthlong Growing Women’s Health campaign. Outlet communities across the country were encouraged to choose a local cause that would raise awareness on an issue related to women’s health. The Shoppers locations at 1000 Islands Mall and on King Street in downtown Brockville and downtown Prescott chose to raise awareness of women and heart disease. In women over the age of 55 in Canada, heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death. Those coming into Shoppers over the next month can support the fundraising effort by purchasing a leaf for $1, a butterfly for $5, an apple for $10 or a bird for $50. One hundred per cent of the funds raised through this year’s campaign in Brockville and Prescott will go toward the Brockville General Hospital’s Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Program (BCP). The role of the BCP is to reduce the risk of future heart disease by providing education to patients after suffering a heart attack, having bypass surgery, stents or other interventions, notes a Brockville and District Hospital Foundation release. Nickel Cup Regatta draws big crowds to Gananoque's waterfront BY MONICA MROZ

Blue sky, sunshine and calm water was the perfect backdrop for the thunder and roar that raced through Gananoque on the weekend. The Nickel Cup Regatta hydroplane boat racing event on Sept. 16-17 was a huge success and drew even larger crowds than expected, according to lead local organizer Chris McCarney. Spectators lined the waterfront several people deep from the point at Joel Stone Park through to the Gananoque Inn and South Street. Full-size tour buses, campers and cars competed for spots in jammed lots close to the waterfront. Vehicles lined the streets for several blocks away from the St. Lawrence River, and even the soft serve ice cream sold out at some treat stands by early Saturday afternoon. It was “a great day to have fun in Gananoque,” said Roger Gipson, an event volunteer who also assisted with announcing from the control booth. While boats thundered past at lightning speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour, spectators picnicked, kayaked, pleasure boated and splashed at the beach and water-park nearby. “There’s no question it’s good for the town,” Gipson said, adding that the boat races helped book every available motel room in Gananoque on the weekend. Sixty-four boats competed for world records on a one-mile surveyed oval course that was as little as 60 metres offshore in some spots.

The Nickel Cup Regatta was the final race of the season and the championship weekend for the Hydroplane Racing League — the Quebec-based sanctioning body of the race. It is known as one of North America’s premier racing events in which boats competed in four classes: 2.5 litre, Formula 2500, Hydro 350 and Grand Prix. Brockville’s Bert Henderson, who has been racing for 21 years and who also repairs and builds hydroplanes, placed first in the Grand Prix division, ahead of Brandon Kennedy and Mike Monahan. His brother Kent Henderson placed third in the Hydro 350 final, just behind Remy Leblanc and Jimmy King. The 2.5 litre finals saw Kevin Smith earn the most points to take first place in that division, while Grant Hearn and Dylan Runne earned second and third. Yan Lecompte, Yan Beaupre and Jean Francois Latour placed in the top three in the F2500 final. Tyler Kaddatz, also of Brockville, placed first in a F2500 heat. The same three local drivers also Monica Mroz/Metroland reached the podium at a Beauharnois, Quebec event Sept. 3. Truckers steered closer to a cure for breast cancer Saturday, Sept. 16. The 4th annual local Trucking for a Cure fundraiser attracted more than 40 trucks in a convoy that started at the Brockville Shopping Centre parking lot, and then made its way west to Long Beach. The horn-honking and brightly decorated trucks doubled back along County Road 2 through downtown Brockville, and then on to Prescott before returning to Brockville in the afternoon. Truckers were encouraged to raise money from pledges; it was expected $25,000 would be raised from the event. One · Colour Scheme

How to select a customized

Are you looking for something light or dark? Understated or with bold character? Choose the colour that best matches your decor from a wide variety of colours available in each species. For uniform hue and a clean look, opt for either “Select & Better” or “Premium” grades. If you enjoy more pronounced colour variation and wood with more character, you may prefer “Antique” or “Classic” grades.

Two · Species No other flooring option delivers the splendour, warmth and value of natural wood. Today there are countless colours available to choose from as well as different species, each with their unique characteristics. No matter the decor style of your home -- modern, contemporary, zen, rustic or urban -- today’s hardwood flooring manufacturers have something for every style and taste. Here are four key steps to consider, to create a unique centrepiece hardwood floor that’s custom tailored for any interior space from country home to urban loft.

Sustainable flooring options abound

Flooring manufacturers and designers are embracing the green design and remodeling movement. Today there are many beautiful and sustainable eco-flooring options. Here are some of the more popular materials. Bamboo Contrary to popular belief, bamboo is not a wood, but a grass. It is a fast-growing grass, and that makes it a smart choice in many design applications. Also, unlike wood, which will absorb moisture and can warp, bamboo repels water and can be used for flooring in areas where one wouldn’t think to put wood, such as in bathrooms, entryways or mudrooms. Bamboo is naturally very light in color, but can be stained in many different hues to give homeowners more options. Cork Growing in popularity, cork is a material harvested from the bark of cork trees found in the forests of the Mediterranean. The bark grows back every three years, so it is a handy renewable resource. Cork boasts fireretardant properties and may naturally repel insects. It can usually be stained to suit various color schemes. Other options for green flooring include Rubber, Reclaimed Wood, and Green Carpeting. Eco-friendly flooring materials continue to evolve and can be smart choices in today’s homes.

From Red Oak, Hard Maple, Yellow Birch, White Ash, White Oak or Brazilian Cherry, each wood species has its own personality and distinct look (grades and width) that comes across in its maturity, hardness, and durability.

Three · Gloss

Depending on the species, you can choose between a matte, semi-gloss and satin finish. A matte, semi-gloss finish tends to project a more formal atmosphere; whereas the natural look of a satin finish will feel more casual and better disguise wear and tear.

Four · Widths and Textures

Wider planks, which are becoming increasingly popular, tend to create a more casual rustic appearance, while narrow planks are more formal. Manufacturers, are now offering 6-1/2” and even 7-1/4” boards in certain species. This is part of the emerging trend of the last few years where consumers are seeking more rustic looks for their hardwood flooring choices. Along with wider boards, another way this is achieved is with the latest use of different textures to give wood either a distressed look of barn wood, prominent knots or the natural lines of boards planed the old fashioned way. Fall Edition 2017

Have you heard of string art?

Materials Needed:

Feel like giving string art a shot? You can find everything you need to create your masterpiece at your local craft shop or hardware store.

• 9 x 12-inch precut wood plaque • Acrylic craft paint or Stain • Foam paintbrush • Scissors • Small nails • Hammer • Tweezers • Heavy thread or string

Custom Floor & Wall Tile Work

Heated Floors

Not sure what string art is, exactly? This increasingly popular art form consists of intricate designs made from interwoven strings held down with nails or pins. Requiring a great deal of patience and care, this technique is much adored by DIY enthusiasts who love to create their own quirky, poetic, abstract, typographic or geometric designs.

The prep work…

Bathtubs & Showers

Bathroom renovations can dramatically enhance your sense of peace and tranquility, as well as the value of your home. From one-day makeovers to full renovations, let us work within your budget to create a space that is luxurious, stylish and easy to maintain.

Start by painting or staining your plaque. Keep in mind the colour of your heavy thread/string when choosing the colour for your plaque. Make your own template using a word processing program.

Center template onto plaque. Keep paper taut and start hammering nails into alternating points of the starburst. Continue adding nails approximately half an inch apart all around the outer edges of the starburst and letter.

Applying the string (heavy thread). To start, tie string in a double knot to the point of one nail. Trim excess string from the end. Keep string taut and start wrapping around nails, making sure to not cross over any negative space within the monogram. Once you feel that you have covered the surface of your art with enough string so the letter is nicely defined, you’re ready to finish. To do that, pick an end point, preferably one on the outside of the project, then tie a tight knot around the nail. TIP: Make sure it’s tied nice and tight so your project doesn’t come unraveled.

Granite/Quartz Kitchen & Bathroom Countertops

Water-saving toilets

The fun part…

Use household tweezers to help remove paper template from plaque. The tweezers will help with any tiny paper scraps that are caught in between nails.

Equine Extravaganza in Lansdowne

Monica Mroz/Metroland

KBD Transportation was among more than 40 trucks and trucking companies that got their pink on Saturday, Sept. 16 to drive out breast cancer. Teams in the 4th annual local Trucking for a Cure breast cancer fundraiser assembled at the Brockville Shopping Centre parking lot in the morning to decorate their trucks. Truckers and their companies were encouraged to raise money from pledges; it was expected $25,000 would be raised from the event. Major supporters of the local campaign are O’Reilly’s Your Independent Grocer, Superior Propane, D & D Tree Service and Hudson Supply. Helping to drive out breast cancer with the three KBD trucks in the event are, from left, Darren Barrington with Zoey Barrington in the stroller, Chris Sands, Tammy Sands, Ry-Leigh Fodey, Allison Sands with Amber Sands, and Jayce Sands with dog Bella.

Hold onto your horses for the Equine Extravaganza festival in Lansdowne. Do you own or ride or just love horses? If so, this is the place for you. This is the first of its kind, an Equine Extravaganza in Lansdowne at the fairgrounds, 1186 Prince St. Stop horsing around at home on Saturday, Oct. 14 and come horse around at the festival from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The Lansdowne Association for Revitalization (LAFR) has teamed up with horse owners and horse lovers to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. This is the public’s opportunity for hands-on equestrian experiences for both young and old. There will be a wide variety of horse breeds including Draft breeds, Morgans, Canadians, English jumpers, Arabians, Minis and more. There will be demos in the corral, horse parades, horse shows and talented equestrians. All-day events will offer plenty for children... wagon rides, pony rides, a petting zoo and leather-making for kids with the Leather Lady. A farrier (a smith who shoes horses) will show off his talents. There will be a horse ambulance demo that promises to be most interesting. Equamania, a university group coming in from Guelph, will be providing horse lore galore with an interactive activity dealing with the many different parts of a horse (tail braid-

ing and kid-friendly horse bone activities). On stage in the Education Barn, there will be presentations on horse nutrition, horse first aid and hoof health. Ron Pyne, from the Horseman’s Way in Elgin, will be demonstrating "natural horsemanship." For more information, check out the Lansdowne Horse Festival on Facebook.

Talented young cast takes Stephen King horror tale to new heights MOVIE: It STARRING: Jaeden Lieberher, Sophia Lillis, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Finn Wolfhard, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, and Bill Skarsgård DIRECTOR: Andy Muschietti RATING: 18A If you're one of those sound sleepers who’s worried about getting too much sleep, I've found something that could help. See Stephen King's It, and sleeping at night should no longer be a problem. The story begins with young Georgie (Jackson Robert Scott) and his older brother Bill (Jaeden Lieberher) in Derry, Maine. The rain is coming down hard and Georgie is chasing a paper boat his brother made him. The boat goes down a drain and into the sewer. Which is where Georgie meets Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård). Which is where Georgie disappears. A year later, and Bill is still trying to find his brother. As school lets out for summer, he has plans to search the sewers. He isn't going alone. Bill's friends Richie (Finn Wolfhard), Eddie (Jack Dylan Grazer), and Stanley (Wyatt Oleff) are with him. Together, they call themselves the Losers Club. The club sees some new members

My Take

MARK HASKINS

It is more than scary, which is why it's so powerful. It is a beautiful coming-ofage story. It's a story of lost innocence, first love, and good friends. You watch it and think ‘I know those kids, I was those kids’. So, when this 'normal' coming-of-age story is juxtaposed with the supernatural, it's all the more real and all the more terrifying. None of this would work without this exceptionally talented cast of kids. These young actors take you through the whole range of human emotions. Their raw, honest, and real performances are what turns It from a movie into an experience. I firmly believe no one with any common sense likes clowns. The book makes that plain, Tim Curry's Pennywise reinforced it, and now Bill Skarsgård has burned it into my brain. As Pennywise, he is creepy beyond imagining. He is evil incarnate. In other words — perfect. Wisely, It focuses on the first half of the novel. It captures the story beautifully, if that can be said of a horror film. I'm not exactly looking forward to chapter two, but I'll still see it.

join. The new kid Ben (Jeremy Ray Taylor), the outcast Bev (Sophia Lillis), and the outsider Mike (Chosen Jacobs) join Bill and the others. It's a typical summer in Derry — or it would be, if it weren't for all the disappearances. Something is hunting the kids of Derry. Bill and his friends piece it together. They start seeing the clown, Pennywise, and have waking nightmares. They know it is coming for them unless they stop it. First off, It is terrifying. Andy Muschietti uses all the horror movie conventions. The close shots so you can't see the background. The things not quite seen moving in the shadows. The quick reveal as Pennywise is suddenly there. The music, the play of dark and light; he pulls out all the stops, and does Mark Haskins’ column is a regular it with expert timing to create a really feature. scary movie.

Fort Town concert season opener offers fresh takes on classics The Fort Town Concert Association will open its 35th season with a presentation of the Ladom Ensemble’s Without Borders at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Prescott on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. Ladom is an acoustic quartet formed in the University of Toronto, and inspired by classical and world music. Made up of artists from across Canada, the eclectic ensemble brings together pianist and composer Pouya Hamidi, the group’s co-founder, originally from Iran; Marie-Cristine Pelchat St-Jacques (Quebec, cello); Michael Bridge (Alberta, accordion), and Adam Campbell (P.E.I., percus-

sion) to put a new spin on arrangements and original compositions. Pouya Hamidi achieved his Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto (ARCT) before entering the University of Toronto, where he completed a bachelor of music in piano performance along with a bachelor’s in composition, studying with the renowned Jamie Parker and Janet Lopinski. He also performs with the musical group Sacred Balance. Marie-Cristine Pelchat St-Jacques started playing the cello at the age of eight. She holds a bachelor of music and a master’s degree in musical performance from the University of Toronto. Add curry paste to skillet and cook,

stirring and scraping the bottom of skillet for 2 minutes. Add pumpkin and stir to coat. Stir in coconut milk and bring to simmer. Cook, uncovered, for 8 minutes. Add chicken to skillet along with any accumulated juices and simmer uncovered for 25 minutes. The sauce will begin to reduce and pumpkin will soften and melt into sauce. Add lime juice and sugar and cook for 3 minutes. Remove and discard star anise and cinnamon. Garnish with green onions and coriander. Smoke Alarms: Test your smoke alarms. If a fire starts in your home while you are asleep, you want to know about it immediately. Some homes are equipped with electrically connected smoke alarms that may not work when the power is out. Make sure your home has a batteryoperated smoke alarm on every level.

CCHL2: Westport, Athens swap 3-1 home victories; Tikis win a pair The Central Canada Hockey League Tier 2 (CCHL2) regular season is entering its third week. The Athens Aeros and Westport Rideaus played in a home-and-home series on Friday and Saturday nights (Sept. 15-16). The Rideaus hosted the first game and won 3-1. The second game took place at Centre 76, and the Aeros came out on top by the same score on Saturday night. Glynn Robitaille scored what proved to be the game winner for the home team late in the first period. Aiden Ethier picked up the win in net for the Aeros. Athens will travel to Winchester to take on the Hawks on Friday at 8:15 p.m. The Aeros will host Arnprior on Saturday night at 7:30. The Brockville Tikis defeated the Hawks 4-3 in Winchester on Sunday night. Zachary Matyasik got the game-winning goal at 8:10 of the third period. Nicolas deAntonio made 32 saves for Brockville in the road victory. The Tikis edged the Blue Wings 3-2 in Perth on Friday night. Alex Lauzon scored the game winner about midway through the third period. deAntonio picked up the win in net. Brockville was doubled 6-3 by the Ottawa Jr. Canadians in the home opener at the memorial centre last Wednesday, Sept. 13. The Tikis hosted Westport on

Wednesday night and will hit the road to take on the Ottawa West Golden Knights on Thursday at 7:15. Brockville will host Perth at the memorial centre on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m.

The Prescott Flyers are now the Whitewater Kings. The Flyers were sold earlier this year to the owner of the Pembroke Lumber Kings and relocated to Cobden. Whitewater remains in the CCHL2's Richard-

son Division along with Athens and Westport. A new South Grenville Rangers Jr. C team is part of the National Capital Junior Hockey League (NCJHL). The Rangers' regular season home

opener at the Leo Boivin Community Centre in Prescott is set for Saturday, Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. The 12-team NCJHL includes Morrisburg and North Dundas as well as two squads based in Quebec.

Do proper testing before swapping out car parts “Hi Brian, You’ve solved a problem for me before, and here’s another one. I have a 2003 Pontiac Vibe, and found the taillights not working. The fuse was blown; I replaced it and replaced the rear bulbs, the fuse blew again. Instead of bothering you, I asked around, and the consensus was that the head light switch/signal lights arm assembly was faulty. After much searching I finally got a new one for $200, plus tax, and installed it. Same results; after one try of the lights, the tail light fuse blew again. I’m at my wit’s end. Do you have any suggestions for me?” BM This Pontiac probably has what's known as a 'short to ground' where a power feed is being grounded causing the blown fuses. As the switch has been eliminated (if properly

installed) as a possible cause now what has to be done is a search of the harness wires, connectors, and components between the switch and the rear lamps to find the short. The first thing a shop tech would do is to eliminate all the rear bulb sockets as culprits by looking for any signs of corrosion and repairing/replacing them as required. Then, armed with a wiring diagram and a circuit tester he or she would divide each of the related circuits in half to check each section for the short. Once the guilty section is known, then that half would be divided in half again and so on until the short is located. Tail lamps receive their power signals from various sources such as the headlamp/signal switch and brake lamp switch, and emergency flasher switch. Some of the more popular areas

Car Counsellor BRIAN TURNER

to look would be any spot where the wiring travels through a bulkhead or where the wiring is exposed to any exterior elements. On a car of this Pontiac's age, it really could be anywhere. A lot of this wiring runs under floor carpeting where years of slush from boots can soak and corrode wiring and connectors. Most shops can't give an estimate for this type of work, only charging the tech's straight time at their labour rate. You can reduce some of this work yourself by checking the lamp sockets and clearing out the interior to reduce the amount of time a tech will have to spend in their search. As well this Vibe is equipped with a tail-lamp relay, which might also be at fault. Our Vibe do-it-yourselfer wasn’t

Visit us online at insidebrockville.com

deterred after I forwarded the response above, I received this email later… “Hi Again, I hope you don’t start charging $100 per hour, if you do, then I’m out of luck! I got the lights to work and I don’t know why. I removed the new switch assembly and reinstalled the old one, put in a new fuse, and thought that while I’m at it, also put in a new fuse marked OBD, to my amazement, everything worked tail lights etc. Beaming with pride, I went for groceries and found it wouldn’t shift out of park! I looked in the manual and it said to remove the shift-lock override cover from the console and insert a small flat tipped tool and press down and sure enough I could shift, but I have to do this every time! Again can you help me out, the manual says to have this fixed ASAP. Have what fixed? They don’t say what the problem is!” The auto transmission shifter on this Vibe has a safety mechanism that won't let it come out of park until the brake pedal is depressed. There is a small electronic device located in the floor console just ahead of the shifter that does this. When it gets an electrical signal from the brake pedal, it releases the lock on the shifter. The brake lamps need to be checked to see if they’re actually

working. If they're not working the problem with the shift lock may be related to that same circuit. If the brake lamps work, then the problem is either in the shift interlock device or the wiring to it (this may have been the problem all along). A connector or wire may have been disturbed swapping out the lamp switch or replacing a burnt fuse or it may be something unrelated. The moral here is don’t swap out parts to solve an electrical problem unless you do the proper testing first. Very few (if any) parts stores will take back any electrical part for refund or store credit if it’s been installed and plugging in most of these components will leave witness marks on the contact pins to indicate they’ve been tried. If you have any questions, opinions, or stories on anything automotive please drop me a line, [By email to bjoeturner@hotmail.com listing ‘Question for the Car Counselor’ on the subject line or by post to Record News Communications, 65 Lorne St., P.O. Box 158, Smiths Falls, Ont. K7A 4T1]. When using regular mail, please supply a phone number if you seek direct contact (due to volume I can’t always promise replies). Yours in service Brian Turner
