It may have started out all about the ribs – and, of course, the ribs are still fantastic – but the annual RibFest in Brockville has become so much more. The 15th annual Brockville RibFest is a four-day fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Leeds and Grenville, and over the years it has grown into a major summer festival and a celebration of food, music and entertainment that draws people from all over the region and beyond. “We actually get people contacting us, asking when the event is taking place because they want to schedule their vacation time around the event,” says Joanne Edgley, of Big Brothers Big Sisters. It’s the Big Brothers Big Sisters’ largest fundraiser of the year, and proceeds from the event all go to support the organization’s many programs aimed at providing kids access to people who can be good examples and positive influences in their lives. This is accomplished primarily through four main programs: traditional matching, in-school mentoring, after-school programs and coop mentoring. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Leeds and Grenville serves about 900 children a year, all of whom benefit from the proceeds of fundraisers such as RibFest, which starts Thursday, Aug. 6, winds up on Sunday, Aug. 9,

and takes place at Brockville’s Hardy Park. The schedule of events that weekend is jam-packed with all sorts of great bands, such as Buckledown, Johnny Canuck, Higher Ground and Healy and Orr, to name but a few, and many other attractions and activities to keep people entertained. Perennially popular events such as the weightlifting contest, arm-wrestling contest and volleyball tournament are all back, and there is a kids zone with lots of things to keep the younger folks having fun. The centerpiece of RibFest, though, is, of course, the ribs, and this year there will be seven returning ribbers – Ribs Royale, Jack the Ribber, Camp 31, Billy Bones, Crabby’s BBQ Shack, Silver Bullet and Gator – as well as one newcomer to the line-up, Dinosaur BBQ. There is no admission fee, so anyone can stop by RibFest and eat as many ribs as they want, and there are lots of other food vendors for those who may not care for ribs, but those people who want to eat lots and lots of ribs, more ribs than anybody else, in fact, can test their limits on Aug. 7 with the always-popular rib eating contest. “That is always a really big draw,” says Edgley. “Lots of people come out to see that.”

And there’s still time to enter a team of four. The entry fee is $100 per team, and information on registration can be found online. Another big crowd-pleaser is the weightlifting competition – called Lifting for Kids’ Sake – and in the event’s third year, the number of participants, in both men’s and women’s categories, has been raised to 30. And the vendors area is always crowded, too, and that’s where people will find representatives of Big Brothers Big Sisters and their popular blooming onions and funnel cakes. It doesn’t take long before RibFest takes on a carnival atmosphere, with Hardy Park alive with activity from morning to night, but such a big event doesn’t come together without the combined effort of a lot of people, and the Big Brothers Big Sisters could still use some volunteers. “Without the volunteers this event would not happen,” says Edgley. It takes about a hundred volunteers giving of their time and energy to keep RibFest going, and now, the event is in need of people to help out in the KidsZone and a few other areas. Anybody who wants to help out can contact the office at 613-345-0281 or fill out a form online on the RibFest website. “It’s a fun event to volunteer at,” says Edgley, “and you’re helping out kids.”
