Foundation continues to support community projects in Brockville area

On Thursday, May 26, representatives from organizations receiving funding from the Brockville and Area Community Foundation (BACF) gathered at the Brockville Public Library.

“It is only $8,500 this year, but let me put this into perspective,” said Executive Director Joyce Ferguson. “Since 2000, in unrestricted funds the foundation has given out over $460,000 to 112 organizations.”

“We had 24 applications to go through,” indicated BACF grant committee member George Smith. That day six of the seven organizations to receive funding were present.

With assistance from Ferguson, Smith announced the recipients and presented cheques asking each organization to further indicate how the funds would be used.

On behalf of the principal at Commonwealth Public School, Debbie Bradley accepted the grant of $1,116 to build an outdoor garden and classroom.

Smith announced the Arts Council of the Thousand Islands, which wants to develop a website as a hub for artists and the public, was granted $1,116.

“Thank you and the Arts Council of the Thousand Islands will put this to good use,” said Chair Howard Alexander. “The award is earmarked for website development. The website for the arts council will have a tremendous capacity for artists in the community to use e-commerce, to promote events and a place for the community to become aware of the different artisans we have here, and how important the arts are, the vibrancy and the life of the community.”

Continuing, Diane Benschop of the Township of Athens Public Library, received a cheque for $1,000 to go towards outdoor tables, benches, signage to allow patrons to use the library’s wi-fi after hours.

“We have an outdoor yard and we would like to encourage people to use the area as we have a lot of cottagers that come during the summer to use the free wi-fi,” indicated Benschop. “We do not have anything outside for people to

sit.”

As for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Leeds and Grenville Chapter, Programs and Services Co-ordinator Margaret Loiselle and Treasurer Verna Brown accepted $2,000 for the purchase of a new computer and software to improve efficiency and usage by clients.

“We really need a new computer and we want access to the Internet to allow our clients to come into the office to do research,” shared Loiselle.

Following, a cheque for $568 was given to Manager of Resources and Technology Web Maintenance and Donations, Amanda Robinson, of the Brockville Public Library to purchase board game programming.

The last organization to receive their grant was Loaves and Fishes, which were presented with a cheque for $2,200 for renovation in their food prep area.

“We thank you very much as this will make a huge difference for our volunteers, as they peel a lot of potatoes (purchasing a potato peeler),” said Administrator Irene Selkirk.

Unfortunately, representation from the Friends of Windmill Point were unable to attend. With their grant of $500, they are using the money for interior displays and storyboards.

Brockville Fire Department promotes Home Safety Awareness Program

The Brockville Fire Department has been conducting home inspections for the last nine years to ensure that owners and renters have the appropriate smoke and alarm detectors.

It is called the Home Safety Awareness Program. Well, the cycle is starting all over again, especially with new legislation and people moving into the area.

“This program is basically to ensure that the citizens of Brockville are safe,” said Brockville Fire Prevention Officer Matt Tyo. “We want to make sure that they have proper working smoke alarms in their house, positioned where they should be. With the new regulations that came into effect the start of 2015, we want to make sure if the house does require alarms that they are installed and properly located.”

The firefighters also look for electrical concerns, housekeeping issues and to acquaint those with deafness or hearing issues to a new program, Sight Line to Safety.

“The fire code talks about smoke alarms and it doesn’t take into consideration that people cannot hear them, so this program is for them,” said Tyo. “We can tell the homeowner what device is out there a strobe light or bed shaker to alert them in case of an emergency.”

Sight Line to Safety is a separate inspection and can be conducted upon notifying the Brockville Fire Department.

“The Home Safety Awareness Program is totally voluntary,” indicated Tyo. “We take basic information, the property address, type of structure, address is clearly visible, smoke alarms working and properly located, as well as a family escape plan.”

In the past, the recommendation was to change smoke alarms after 10 years, carbon monoxide after five years to 10 years, but now it is the manufacturer’s recommended instructions.

“With the new fire code, it is mandatory to follow the manufacturer’s recommended instructions,” offered Tyo. “Many of the alarms have the manufacturer’s date on them or replace by date. As well, if an alarm is checked and the battery is dead, we will install the battery. If a smoke alarm or carbon monoxide alarm is not functioning or they do not have an alarm, we will install one for them, but it is a loaner. After three days, they need to replace the loaner and return it.”

After the inspection, the homeowner will be asked to sign off on the sheet and a copy remains with them.

For clutter in a dwelling, the fire department will ensure that a clear path is available to leave the home.

According to the fire code, each level in a home needs to have smoke alarms, including the basement. With the carbon monoxide detectors are required if the home has a fuel burning appliance, (wood, gas or fireplace)

or an attached garage, regardless of whether it (garage) is used or not.

“A carbon monoxide alarm is required on every level that has a bedroom,” added Tyo. “We try to work with people (businesses) and generally we give people 30 days to get the work done on any fire code regulations and we do follow up with the hope that all is taken care of,” stated Tyo. “Under the fire code, we can lay charges per offence; it would be $50,000 a day until the work is completed and/or up to a year in jail. We do not have to give an order; we can lay charges right away.”

The Brockville Fire Department and the prevention office try to assist people in making sure that their home is safe, secure with appropriate alarms and are obeying the law.

“When it comes to smoke and carbon monoxide alarms violations, we can give tickets,” said Tyo. “Those fines range from $235 to $360. Failure to comply with an inspection order can cost $2,000.”

The public should not be intimated by these inspections, as they are voluntary; it’s educational and an opportunity to ask the firefighters questions.

A unique and entertaining evening in support of Brockville Museum

Step back in time to the 1940s and “Keep it Under Your Stetson.”

The Brockville Museum, with the participation of Wedgewood Retirement Resort and singer/entertainer A.J. Benoit, will treat guests to a unique meal and the great music of the time on June 18. The host for the event is the museum’s Amy Mackie, who will share some of her passion for this period in Canadian history.

Be aware of risks associated with synthetic fentanyl

The Brockville Police Service is alerting the public to the presence of a potent and potentially fatal drug reportedly being sold in the city.

Synthetic fentanyl – also known by its street names w18 and faded ‘80s – might be in powder form and mixed with cocaine. The drug might be sold at a discounted price compared to traditional fentanyl patches, according to a police news release issued last Thursday.

City police indicated they have received several reports of synthetic fentanyl being sold in Brockville. The public is being urged to use extreme caution when somebody is offering this drug for use.

According to a recent Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit Communiqué, the synthetic version has the potential to be more fatal than transdermal patches because of its possible purity and the user might not be aware that they are using it because it might be disguised as some other drug – for example, it has been known to be sold as OxyContin or heroin elsewhere in Ontario.

Fentanyl is an opioid that is 100 times more toxic than morphine. Signs and symptoms of a synthetic fentanyl overdose are the same as those of other opioids: breathing that is erratic, slow or non-existent; blue fingernails and/ or lips; limp body; unconsciousness; deep snoring or gurgling; pin-point pupils; and vomiting. Call 911 if overdose symptoms are present.

Anyone with information about synthetic fentanyl in Brockville is asked to call Detective Sergeant Tom Fournier at 613-342-0127, ext. 4258.

Campaign aimed at breaking silence of abuse

Survivors of domestic, sexual and elder abuse should be believed.

That’s the message that the Victim Issues Coordinating Committee of Leeds & Grenville is hoping to deliver. The committee is releasing three posters as part of Victim & Survivors of Crime Awareness Week, which runs from May 29 to June 4 and is funded by the Department of Justice.

The campaign is promoting the use of the

hashtag #StartBelievingLG. The goal is to encourage victims to feel safe and supported, according to a release issued on Tuesday. “Often survivors of domestic, sexual and elder abuse are faced with disbelief and judgement when they come forward,” the release states. “They are told they are confused, lying, or that what happened to them isn’t a big deal. Our committee wants to change this narrative and bring the community together to support our survivors.”

The committee is encouraging the public to use that hashtag when sharing stories about why survivors should be believed.

Brockville MS Walk total is well over $35,000

On a steamy Sunday morning, 20 teams and more than 150 walkers participated in the 19th annual Brockville Mandarin Multiple Sclerosis Walk raising well over $35,000. He was once again the top individual fundraiser, with over $10,000 from online auctions, donations and events that he co-ordinates. The top three fundraising teams were Team S’mylin, Miller Time and Monster Slayers. The best team spirit went to Team Debbie. A breakfast was provided along with a noon barbecue. Do you feel a need for speed? Does the sound of roaring engines raise your adrenaline level? Do you thrive on the excitement surrounding activities on the St. Lawrence River?

If you said yes to even one of those questions, you won’t want to miss the 1000 Islands Nickel Cup Hydroplane Regatta happening in Gananoque from June 2 to 5.

The Nickel Cup Regatta is hydroplane racing like you have never imagined before and it will be right here in Gananoque, thrilling die-hard speed enthusiasts and recruiting new ones.

The hydroplane races were a tradition

here for many years, adding excitement to the summers in the 1000 Islands during the late 1940s and early 1950s. It was commonplace for them to attract quite literally thousands of spectators. All along the shoreline of the St. Lawrence River, hydroplane enthusiasts lined the shores, vying for the best spot to catch the excitement, hear the roar of the engines and watch as the boats soared past.

These hydroplane boats will average speeds between 180km/hr up to 300km/ hr, depending on their class of watercraft. Co-chair of the Nickel Cup Regatta committee, Chris McCarney, has been involved with the sport for almost 30 years. He strongly believes these rac-

es are an important way to embrace the river, its past, the people who are called to it, who live and play here. “It’s some of the most exciting racing in the world,� McCarney said. “When you get boats going faster than a stock car, it’s really something to experience.� “It was Chris’ dad that was involved in it back in the day,� explained Kathrine Christensen, executive director, 1000 Islands Accommodation Partners.  “Chris has the actual trophy that they were giving out back in the ‘40s and ‘50s. He spent an entire afternoon shining it up.

This exciting event is part of the North American race circuit, sanctioned by the American Canadian Hydroplane Association. It will include four different classes of boats; Formula 2500, Hydro 350, 2.5 litre and Grand Prix.

The excitement begins today (Thursday) with an opportunity to see the boats up close and personal. Visitors will have an opportunity to meet and speak with the drivers, which will in turn naturally build even more excitement for the upcoming races. There will also be events planned for children and families during that time. On Friday, the committee hopes to host a parade throughout the downtown core.

The races themselves will take place on Saturday and Sunday along the waterfront, in front of the boat museum and along the waterfront in Joel Stone Park. “Those new docks at the museum opened just the other day. Opportunity knocks

Health unit provides information on algae bloom effects Blue-green algae blooms are a natural and seasonal phenomenon that may appear in lakes, rivers and ponds, according to the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit.

Many of these blooms are relatively harmless, a recent health unit release notes; however, some species have the potential to produce toxins which may be harmful to people and animals. The presence of blue-green algae and its toxins can only be confirmed through a laboratory test, so the unit recommends taking a cautious approach when a blue-green algae bloom is suspected.

Toxins are released when the algae cells break down; these toxins can cause skin irritation, nausea and vomiting. When exposed to higher concentrations, a person can experience liver problems.

The health unit advises people using surface water for recreation and drinking, to become familiar with blue-green algae so

they can make informed decisions on when to avoid contact with the water. Algae blooms do degrade with time; however, it is not possible to say whether the toxins have completely left the area. Once the toxin is released from the cell, where it goes is dependent on the local characteristics of water movement in the area. The toxin will eventually be diluted into the body of water as any other soluble compound.

Surface water is never a safe source of drinking water without effective treatment. The toxins released by blue-green algae are not removed by commonly used treatment methods such as boiling, chlorination or ultraviolet light treatment.

Avoid activities that increase exposure to toxins in the water during an active algae bloom.

We understand why some of you do not feel you should have to keep your unattended vehicles secured or the doors to your house and garage locked while you are doing work on your property. Unfortunately, there are too many examples of how those who don’t give it a second thought or choose not to heed the warnings from law enforcement end up getting burned.

We make note of two recent cases – one in Prescott last week and the other in Brockville earlier this spring. The homeowner is in the yard mowing the lawn or tending to a garden, and before he or she knows it someone has entered the house that had an unlocked or open door, stolen a few items – including jewellery and money – and fled on foot. All it takes is a few moments for a crime of opportunity to occur.

The police can’t be everywhere all of the time, so the rest of us have to do our part and make note and report any suspicious activity seen or heard. Setting an example by being a good neighbour could serve a useful purpose when the shoe is on the other foot and we have been victimized. The other thing we can do is reduce the risk of being ripped off by taking simple steps to discourage thieves. How many of us make a point of not leaving items of value – a purse, wallet or cell phone, or maybe a laptop – in our vehicles that are unlocked or have the windows down and that are in plain view of passersby?

No, we shouldn’t have to keep everything under lock and key. Eastern Ontario is a safe place to live compared to just about everywhere else, but property crime has been and continues to be a reality here. We’re not helping the situation by ignoring the problem. By being a bit more careful and making note of and reporting suspicious activity to police immediately, maybe there would be fewer thefts.

Dash mounted cameras may have more than one use

We’ve all chuckled at and been amazed by some of the videos that drivers have posted online courtesy of dash mounted cameras. But other than entertainment purposes, are there any reasons to have such a device on board?

They can be a valuable tool when it comes to collisions, especially when dealing with potential traffic fines or insurance settlements or worse yet insurance fraud. I had a chance recently to try out one of the most advanced units on the market; Swann’s Navigator HD 1080 pixel dash camera.

This unit retails for about $200 and is available from most electronic storefront and online retailers. It’s small but produces very clear and crisp pictures, even in low light and captures much of the view ahead thanks to a 140-degree lens. A big

Set up is quite easy thanks to a one-cord system and included vehicle power-point adapter. Tips of the week. New Ontario safety standards coming into effect this summer will strictly limit the type of window tinting you can have on your car. This particular rule won’t retroactively affect vehicles already tinted because of the difficulty and expense of removing that film (it will affect vehicles built after Jan. 1, 2017). But if you’ve just bought a used vehicle with distracting or damaged tint and you want to tackle removing it yourself, try steaming it off. A hand held clothes or cleaning steamer directed at the inside of the glass can weaken the bond between the film and the glass allowing it to be peeled off without tearing.

Least-serious drought advisory issued

The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority (CRCA) is asking businesses and residents in the region that extends from Brockville to Napanee to be wary of water usage.

CRCA declared a minor drought condition last week; it is the first of three levels and is intended to note concern about local water levels, the authority noted in a release issued on Thursday. Agricultural fields are drying out quickly, and creeks are drying up earlier than normal this spring.

“We’ve seen less than 50 per cent of the normal amount of rainfall over April and May, and stream flows are at approximately 25 per cent of average flows for this time of year, and already near summer low flows,” stated CRCA Water Resources Engineer Sean Watt.

Long-term forecasts suggest an average amount of precipitation; stream flows and lake levels would remain close to normal if that happens, according to the release. For now, though, CRCA is asking residents and businesses to try to conserve water – including outdoor watering of plants and lawns as well as washing driveways and sidewalks – when possible.

Updates are to be provided as the situation changes.

A moderate drought condition indicates a potentially serious problem; the severe classification means a failure of the water supply to meet demand. Conditions are determined by a team that includes representation by water managers and major water users, government and public health agencies, dam operators and marina and golf course operators.

Brush-a-Mania brings smiles to St. Mark

Doctors Kim Hansen and Lance McIntosh are joined by Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark, bottom, at a Brusha-Mania campaign stop at St. Mark Catholic School in Prescott on Friday afternoon. Brush-a-Mania is an Ontario Dental Association initiative that delivers a positive oral health message to youngsters. The local dentists – both of whom grew up a short distance from the school – talked about the importance of brushing twice a day (morning and night) and flossing at least once a day as well seeing a dentist at least once a year and eating a balanced diet. McIntosh, president of the Brockville Dental Association, encouraged the students to brush really well as well as to floss in order to “break up the party” and not give cavity bugs that sit on teeth the chance to work. Can’t wait for next year’s Big Pike Challenge

The second annual Big Pike Challenge took place in Joel Stone Park in Gananoque on May 21 and 22 with 112 anglers taking part this year, that number up by 10 from the inaugural year.

“We had anglers come from as far west as Toronto as far east as Winchester as far north as Ottawa and as far south as Watertown,” said organizer Garry Fisher.

The popular tournament paid out $250 for biggest fish of each hour as well as $120 for

2nd biggest fish of each hour. A total of 64 fish were weighed in on Saturday, the first day of the tournament, totalling 334.4lbs. Sunday, the second day of the tournament, saw another 47 fish weighed in, totalling an additional 247.02 lbs.

The biggest fish caught throughout the tournament as 13.62 lbs, by Dave Curtis.

“Our oldest competitor was Dick Garlock at 84 years young,” commented Fisher. “He brought in the 2nd biggest fish at 11.01 lbs.”

phy Hunter Muskie Charters consisting of two hats, two shirts, two rod and reel pkgs, tackle, lunch at Muskie Jake’s as well as an 8 hour guided charter. The lucky winner was Roderick McDonald.

Fisher, of course, added in a few little incentives. “We had a challenge to beat Jeff Chisholm from The Fish TV Show in the hours that he brought a fish in,” explained Fisher. “The

weights and winner were Saturday, hour 6 - Jeff 6.46-Chris Scott -7.74. And in hour 7, Jeff 5.89Dick Garlock 11.01 and hour 8 - Jeff 4.74, David Love - 5.02.

“We had a great weekend and can’t wait to put it on again next year,” beamed Fisher.

The whole weekend was filled with sunshine, happy anglers and an absolutely brilliant opportunity for family time.

The eighth annual Chalk the Walk event took place in Gananoque on Saturday. This 1000 Islands International Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival began at 10 a.m.; participants could register for a mere $2, which included their chalk. Award-winning children’s literature illustrator Wallace Edwards was on hand, as well as the Amazing 3-D Chalk Artist Guy Wales. Many visitors also had an opportunity to meet with local artist David Day (shown here, left, with some of his creations) as well as The Bee Man himself, Joe Campbell. This fun-filled family activity showcases art for all ages with everything from sidewalk chalk art to drawings, paintings, fine art, even the art of henna tattoos. Everyone is looking for Amelia (Margaret Oualley). Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) is the kind of guy you call when you need a problem to go away. He did a job for Amelia, but now thinks she might be in trouble. He hires private detective Holland March (Ryan Gosling) to help

him find her which is ironic because March was the job Amelia hired Healy to make go away.

March was looking for Amelia as part of a different case. He was hired by the aunt of Misty Mountains (Murielle Telio), an adult film star, who died in an apparent suicide. The aunt is convinced

her niece is alive, and she wanted March to find her. His investigation turned up Amelia as a possible lead.

After Healy broke March’s arm, March let the case go. Now that Healy wants him to help him find Amelia, March figures a job is a job. March takes the money, and together with Healy they uncover a strange plot. It seems Amelia was involved in making an ‘experimental’ film, and everyone involved in making that movie is now dead. If they don’t find Amelia soon she will be too.

One of the things that really struck me was how Shane Black was able to turn the clock back to re-create 1977 Los Angeles. The sets, the costumes, the cars on the freeway, the ads on the billboards,

and the shots of the city. The attention to detail immerses you in this time and in this story.

That same attention to detail carries over to the crafting of the plot. It’s a classic detective story with plenty of twists and turns. It begins as a simple missing person case and develops into a conspiracy that reaches all the way into the government.

The cast is extremely sharp. Kim Basinger, Margaret Oualley and Keith David are great, but it’s Angourie Rice who is a real stand out. She plays March’s daughter Holly, who despite March’s best attempts, keeps getting involved to try and help her dad. She’s funny when she needs to be funny, she’s insightful when she

needs to be insightful, but underneath it all remains a child.

Russell Crowe has a knack for playing tough guys. He’s perfect as Healy who has no qualms about breaking a man’s nose if he believes it’s the right thing to do. Ryan Gosling effortlessly becomes a private detective who relies on luck as much as skill, and struggles as widowed husband and a single dad.

Together Crowe and Gosling do funny, they do hardboiled, they do heroics.

The chemistry between them is fantastic, and more than worth the price of admission. The Nice Guys is good, but with them it’s must-see cinema.

Operatic society prepares to set sail for South Pacific

The Brockville Operatic Society (BOS) is preparing to wow the crowds this month, choosing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific as their upcoming production.

Set in WWII on a beautiful Island paradise, South Pacific tells the tale of two love stories each threatened by human prejudice and war. “South Pacific is an incredible piece of theatre and had actually won a Pulitzer Prize for drama when it first debuted,” said musical director Chris Coyea.

He is truly enjoying his debut as music director for the Operatic Society, with South Pacific being his favourite of all the Rodgers and Hammerstein shows. “I feel fortunate to have such a wonderful cast. The leads are extremely strong; Alex perfect as Emile, a role created by the Met Opera star bass, Ezio Pinza.” He continued, “It’s loaded with many of their greatest hits: Bali Hai, Some Enchanted Evening, Nothin’ Like a Dame, I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair, This Nearly was Mine and Honey Bun.” The BOS production boasts two wonderful Nellies, played by Danielle Warren and Nicole Geneau-Mitchell, each bringing a very unique portrayal of the character, and both incredibly talented.

The role of Bloody Mary, flawlessly

played by Margaret Whisselle – herself a mother of five – easily relates to the issues of putting your child first.

“I have two daughters and I know what it’s like to protect them and that’s what Bloody Mary is all about. She is trying to ensure her daughter’s future is better than the future she can have on the island.”

“She is willing to take risks and make her the totally zany character that she needs to be while singing Bali Hai just beautifully,” explains Coyea.

The role of Cable is played by Andrew Morely; a recent SLC musical theatre grad; Billis by gifted actor Will Wright as well as two childrens’ roles played by Zoë Cosgrove and Oscar Arkeveldt that Coyea promises will melt hearts.

Morely didn’t actually step into the role of Cable until just three short weeks ago, despite rehearsals having started back the end of March.

“I really feel like it has a good sense of adventure,” Morley said of the show. “Especially with my character being driven to do a lot of things that he may not have thought he was necessarily allowed to do or was capable of doing beforehand.”

“Andrew’s role as Cable was last made famous by Mathew Morrison from Glee,” pointed out stage director Michael Trussell. “He has some big

By the time Michael Trussell stepped into the role of stage director, the board had already chosen the production they wished to present

this year and Trussell was thrilled.

“It’s coming up on an anniversary of South Pacific. It’s a large anniversary. I jumped in kind of in the middle,” explained Trussell. “It was cast and things were already in motion. The

director that was going to do it, for whatever reason could not. It’s one of my favourite plays, that I’ve always wanted to direct.” He continued, “I was in it the last time they did it, back See South Pacific page 18

in the ‘80s. So when the opportunity was there, I jumped in with both feet and both hands and away we go.”

Trussell had only compliments for the cast and crew.

“When they cast this production, they did an amazing job. I love working with each and every one of them.

The back set people are phenomenal. Some of the tech things we are doing in this show have never been done on this stage,” he smiled.

The orchestra is made up of 15 talented local musicians who play the numbers like they have been playing them for years.

St. Lawrence College offers range of courses at summer school of the arts

According to Dean, there is no prerequisite for her course – just be curious. Beginners to experienced artists are most welcome to join in this creative experience.

“I will guide people with exercises to get into the right brain mode through demonstrations, discussions, one-onone attention and friendly critiques,” said Dean. “I encourage exploring and playing in a supportive group of kindred spirits. I have a friendly and nurturing teaching style… I’ll help students to trust their intuition and find their own style in your art.”

Dean’s painting style is mixed media art that comes to life in layers of colour, texture and words. She find inspiration in classical and fantasy literature, abbey ruins, ancient trees and nature in all aspects.

“My paintings are often abstract with great depth and mystery, created through many layers,” explained Dean.

As for mono print, Dean thinks of printing a piece of paper once, but in fact it is one piece of paper, printed on many times with different imagery and colour.

“What makes it a mono print is the fact that no two are ever the same, even when they are made using the same plates,” stated Dean.

When the class come to an end, Dean hopes that everyone will come away with lots of techniques and new ideas, some gorgeous layered mixed media paintings and the inspiration to make many more.

What an opportunity to have classes with area artisans, as well as time with returning mixed media artist Holly Dean and international potter Tony Clennell.

The 2016 1000 Islands Summer School of the Arts at St. Lawrence College in Brockville starts June 20 and runs until the end of July, with a variety of courses offered.

The Joy of Sketching, Bowls, Cups, Tumblers and more, Rug Hooking, Plein Air Painting, the Abstract Landscape, No Brushes Allowed are only some of the many possibilities for those interested in the arts.

From June 20 to June 26, Dean will be giving a week-long course.

“We have lots of time to really delve deeply into Painting Layers in Mixed Media, “ said Dean. “Students will learn to conceal and reveal collage elements, build subtle texture with acrylic mediums, explore the difference between fluid, soft body and heavy body acrylic paints. As well, use stencils to build relief, add metallic paint for magical highlights, make transfers, create beautiful compositions using design principles and discuss many other creative ideas that come up. I love to share everything I know and encourage the students to share too.”

As mentioned, Dean is a returning artist as she was invited by the alumni to teach Creating Layers, a one-day workshop in January 2015.

“From experience, I know that there will be several aha! moments,” stated Dean.

She says this course is an adventure working on paper, canvas and board with acrylic paints and mediums, collage, stamps and stencils, writing, oil pastels, ink, pencil, charcoal and so much more.

“We’ll paint with brushes and unusual tools, make mono prints, drip, pour, sand, and rip,” shared Dean. “The possibilities are endless!”

For July 5 and 6, second-generation potter and guest Tony Clennell will focus on larger than life utilitarian pottery for occasional use.

“We will pay attention to the details on larger casseroles, pitchers, bowls, baskets and plates so they may be used for celebration and presentation,” said Clennell. “During the second day of class, bring your favourite pieces in for a No Holds Barred Critique.”

His lecture will be Your Work is a Gift, a PowerPoint presentation of his work over a 35-year period, which shows embellishments for pottery to make it special and different.

In addition, attendees may be treated to Production Versus One-Offs, a fourmonth study and observation of porcelain production in Jingdezhen, China.

Clennell’s background includes a Master of Fine Arts from Utah State University and is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and has written more than 55 articles for ceram-

ic journals and is exhibited in museums and collections in North America, Europe and Asia.

During this two-day workshop, participants will have the availability to ask questions and learn.

“My specialty over the years has been sectional or composite throwing where I add many pieces together to make one vessel,” shared Clennell. “I have also developed a signature with the use of

thrown, pulled and hand built handles.

Extreme handles are my specialty.”

He has taught workshops in Canada, the United States, Japan, China, Korea, Wales and Italy.

Clennell welcomes all students with an enthusiasm and hunger to make interesting work.

Federal minister visits Mallorytown Landing to open Parks Canada season

Catherine McKenna got a chance to start the long weekend in her happy place.

The federal minister of environment and climate change made a stop at the Thousand Islands National Park visitor centre in Mallorytown Landing on Saturday, May 21. In addition to officially opening Parks Canada’s 2016 visitor season, McKenna – the minister responsible for the federal agency – announced that Parks Canada is hiring 400 additional students in 2016-2017 by way of the Summer Work Experience stream of the government’s Youth Employment Strategy.

The minister said that the federal government is “deeply committed” to protecting and presenting special places like Thousand Islands National Park for the benefit of all Canadians.

As part of Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations in 2017, the government announced as part of this year’s budget that admission to national parks and historic sites would be free that year; this includes free lockage for recreational boaters on canals and waterways operated by Parks Canada.

McKenna indicated that her goal is not just providing free admission and boosting visit totals; it’s about “…creating a real love for our national parks.” In noting that she has done a lot of camping and canoeing, the minister said that

there are many people who are not that familiar with the experience. Offering free admission in 2017 is “a really exciting opportunity” to promote Canada’s national parks and historic sites.

“Parks is my very happy place,” McKenna said in reference to her ministerial duties.

In addition to thanking “our awesome Parks Canada staff,” the minister said she is excited about taking part in the expanded Learn to Camp program that was announced in the budget as part of a $16.6-million allocation over five years to develop new programming and encourage indigenous story-telling and eco-tourism opportunities.

McKenna represents the riding of Ottawa Centre.

A representative of the Mohawks of Akwesasne opened and closed the formal portion of the visitor centre gathering and offered indigenous greetings and thanks. The minister then posed with some of the Parks Canada summer students before walking to the nearby rocky point, where she was given a brief history of the location.

The park formerly known as St. Lawrence Islands was established in 1904 and was the first national park east of the Rockies; it dots the landscape between Kingston and Elizabethtown-Kitley.

Pipes & Drums mark 85 years in Brockville

The tradition continues.

The Brockville Pipe Band is marking its 85th anniversary this year. Band members Brian Porter, Stewart Nimmo and John Taylor made an appearance at the city council meeting on Tuesday, May 24.

Formed in 1931, the Brockville Pipes & Drums continue to take part in parades, commencements and civic events in Eastern Ontario and Northern New York.

The band is sponsored by the Brockville Police Service and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 96.

The group is “proudly keeping alive” the tradition of Scottish highland bagpipes in Brockville, band member Brian Porter indicated during a presentation to city council on Tuesday night.

To commemorate the anniversary, band members Stewart Nimmo and John Taylor presented framed photographs of the band to Councillor Leigh Bursey, who served as acting mayor at the meeting. In

noting that Taylor is 90 years old, Porter commented that “Piping is good for your health.”

The band was to hold a concert – weather permitting – at Blockhouse Island on Wednesday, June 1 at 7 p.m.

A plaque unveiling is planned as part of the event. The Brockville Pipe Band is also scheduled to perform at Blockhouse Island on July 13, Aug. 3 and Sept. 7 and take part in Brockville’s Canada Day parade.

The band has purchased new accessories that includes jackets and vests, Porter noted. “You must admit, we look pretty sharp,” he remarked while pointing out the new gear to council.

The band, which is a registered charity, practices at Branch 96 on Park Street on Wednesdays (excluding the summer). New members are welcome; free lessons for beginners are offered starting in September.

Hoping to make cystic fibrosis history

Members of the Creon’s Crushers crew in support of Lindsay Delorme gather prior to the start of the Carstar Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History at Memorial Park in Brockville on Sunday morning. More than 80 communities across the country host walks as part of the national event that benefits Cystic Fibrosis Canada and its efforts in the areas of research, care, advocacy and awareness involving the multi-system disease that attacks mainly a person’s lungs and digestive system and has no cure. About 65 people took part in the Brockville walk; the preliminary total on Monday morning was $18,000, and additional funds were expected. Becoming free of debt is a top priority for homeowners

Rising housing costs are making it difficult for homeowners to balance paying down their mortgage, saving for retirement and managing day-to-day expenses, a new Manulife Bank Canada survey shows.

More than one in three homeowners (37 per cent) were caught short at least once in the past year and did not have enough to cover expenses, according to a recent release. Just four in 10 are confident they will have enough savings for retirement. For some, the rising cost of housing means they will approach retirement with significant home equity but insufficient savings to fund their retirements.

“Our research has consistently found that becoming debt-free is among the top financial priorities for Canadian homeowners. They must also find a balance between debt repayment and saving for retirement so they don’t end up house-rich and asset poor,” said Rick Lunny, president and chief executive officer, Manulife Bank of Canada. “The best option is to work with an advisor to get a plan in place well before retirement to balance debt repayment, retirement savings and day-to-day spending.”

The average Canadian homeowner with a mortgage has an outstanding balance of $181,000, up from $175,000 reported last fall. Average mortgage debt remains highest in Vancouver, with an average of $259,000, compared to $217,000 for Calgary and Edmonton and $194,000 for Toronto.

Homeowners also appear to be quite sensitive to changes in the value of the Canadian dollar. For most homeowners, their home is a key component of their vision for retirement. The survey was conducted online by Environics Research between Feb. 3 and 20, 2016. National results were weighted by province, income and age.

Green Things Landscaping wins Provincial Landscape Award Each year, Landscape Ontario hosts the Horticultural Trades Association’s Award of Excellence Ceremony. This is an event that showcases the outstanding levels of craftsmanship attained by Ontario’s Landscaping Industry. This year’s event was held in January, at the International Plaza Hotel in Toronto.

Over 600 Industry professional attended the event. The evening was hosted by Frank Ferragine of Breakfast Television and CityTV. Awards are given for breathtaking design and master craftsmanship in landscape construction, maintenance and design projects. The Awards of Excellence are judged according to specific criteria, set by industry experts. This year, local company Green Things Landscaping were ecstatic to take home their first Award of Excellence for residential construction.

Their winning project showed

the superior level of craftsmanship and high level of expertise, that Green Things Landscaping has been demonstrating for almost 40 years.

Established in 1979, the landscape company changed ownership 3 years ago, when it was purchased

by Jesse Perrin. Previous owner, Wally Earl remained with the company to work as the General Manager and Designer. Jesse recently became a certified Landscape Technician (CLT). This is a designation granted through the Landscape Ontario Association. The process requires the candidate to have over 2000 hours of industry experience. There is also a set of written exams on landscape/ horticultural knowledge, and a series of timed practical field labs. A final grade of 70% must be achieved to pass. Green Things encourages all full-time staff to become certified to aid in their personal development.
