Leeds-Grenville MS walkers top $35,000 raised for local chapter By DOREEN BARNES
More than $35,000 was raised for the Multiple Sclerosis Leeds and Grenville Chapter, during the 18th annual Mandarin MS Walk in Brockville. All money raised in Leeds and Grenville stays in this area to assist those afflicted with MS. The walk took place Sunday, May 24. Top fundraiser was Kory Crowder and Alicia St. John using their weekly auctions for MS on Facebook (www. facebook.com/groups/AuctionsforMS/), as well as donating funds from last year’s Community Yard Sale and Vendor Event. This year’s upcoming second annual Community Yard Sale and Vendor Event will be held June 28 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the parking lot of Vanier Public School in Brockville. All ages collected money to help with this walk, including nine-year-old Josh Puddy and his family from Chesterville. “I want to get my mother a cure,” said Puddy, who raised $248 to donate. Money instead of toys To raise this money, Puddy asked for money instead of toys at Christmas, and as time passed he suggested the family enter a team to walk. Puddy’s mother, Shelley Cole, and several other family members came together to make the 2I2BT (Too Inspired to Be Tired) team of 15 individuals. Cole was diagnosed 10 years ago with multiple sclerosis and currently walks with the aid of a cane.
Another team called MonSter Slayers was comprised of Melissa Rowe, Heather Price, Tracey, who has MS, three-year-old William and Melissa’s dog Ivan. This was the first walk for Heather Price showing support for her niece Tracey, who has MS. Some research news was also shared about the dyadic physical activity program for people with moderate to severe MS and their caregivers. The School of Rehabilitation Therapy at Queen’s University is conducting a study to determine if there’s a need for a leisure-time physical activity. If you are interested in knowing more or want to be involved, contact Afolasade Farontimi toll free at 1-855-533-3407 or email a.farotimi@queensu.ca. Also, exciting news about the mesenchymal stem cells study, wherein it has been found that the body including the bone marrow, skin and fat can be used to suppress inflammation and repair nerve tissue. Currently, the Ottawa site has received ethics approval to screen potential candidates for participation. Those eligible are men and women ages 18 to 50 years of age with multiple sclerosis. For individuals interested in being part of this MESCAMS study, it is sugPhoto by DOREEN BARNES gested that their neurologist contact the Fifteen members of the Puddy-Cole family of Chesterville came together to form Team 2I2BT (Too Inspired Ottawa Hospital, Catherine Hilliker, 613-737-8104, extension 7 or email to Be Tired) and participate in the Mandarin MS Walk for Leeds and Grenville through the urging of Josh Puddy (holding the 2I2BT sign).
