A one-day reunion on Saturday, June 10 will take place at Athens District High School (ADHS), inviting all former attendees to a fun-filled day of events. "Because it is the Canada 150, we thought we should do something for the community and to raise support as well as money for the Wall of Distinction," indicated ADHS Homecoming committee member Dan Flood. The purpose of the Wall of Distinction at ADHS is to showcase and recognize graduates who have contributed to sports or the business world, serving as role models for the community. "We want to highlight and celebrate the achievements of the high school through the Wall of Distinction," stated Flood. Organization for this alumni reunion started with eight to 10 people coming together last fall to form a committee to start the ball rolling. On Saturday, June 10, the alumni is invited to Cedar Valley Golf and Country Club in Forthton for a 9 a.m. buffet breakfast for $9.95. As well, the Athens Museum, 12 Wellington St., will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with free admission. "The Athens Museum is highlighting the 70th anniversary of Athens District High School Parliament," added Flood. "Following, there are two Athens heritage bus tours that are organized, which we have funding for. They leave the museum at 9:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. to go Doreen Barnes/Metroland around the community to show historic sites like Maple View Lodge, Mother Barnes' cabin, the Memorial Centre, the rink, the new public school, and churches that have been around for ages. There was also talk about going to There were line-ups at the YMCA of Brockville and Area for the Burnbrae Farms Breakfast Charleston Lake." in support of the Strong Kids 2017 annual giving campaign on Monday, May 8. pants must register before May 23 on the website www.ADHS2017.weebly. com. At 10:30 a.m., golfers can tee off at Crooked Creek Golf Course in Athens. It is nine holes, best ball at a cost of $17 per person. Again, people must register by May 23. There will be sponsored holes with closest to the pin or longest drive. As for photos, if anyone would like to submit some, they would be welcomed. "We do have an email address for people to send pictures and information, which is adhsalumni@gmail. com," offered Flood. It wouldn't be a homecoming without a tour of the school and going down memory lane with all the memorabilia that will be on display. This starts at 4 p.m. and runs until 5:30, when a chicken barbecue will be served next door at the Athens United Church. The Athens District High School Band, under the direction of Jim Palmer, will be performing. "There is potential to have the barbecue outside, but if not, they have the availability in the basement of the Unit-

ed Church," shared Flood. Those looking forward to attending this barbecue are asked to purchase tickets, for $15 per person, by May 23. Tickets are available at Athens Town Hall and Burt Hudson Real Estate office. Closing out the day will be a Homecoming social event and cash bar at 7 to 11 p.m., in the decorated Athens District High School gym at a cost of $20 per participant. "People can socialize, there will be snacks, refreshments and a cash bar by the Lions Club," said Flood. "There will be music playing in the background and merchandise, coffee mugs, and T-shirts will be available for purchase." Once again the alumni can register online at www.ADHS2017.weebly.com for those events that have indicated required registration. As for the barbecue, tickets must be purchased by May 23 from a committee member (Joan Johnston, Wayne Reed, Marsha McNair and Angela Flood-Miller, Kevin Tackaberry, Sally Flood, Dan Flood, Audrey Harkness [Webster] and Barb Iafelice [Johnston]), the Athens Town Hall, or Burt Hudson Real Estate. No tickets or registration are available at the school. Doreen Barnes/Metroland

Passport project promotes Gananoque area's many attractions BY Monica Mroz

Gananoque and area residents have a chance this summer to see their own tourist attractions through the eyes of visitors from around the world. The Community Discovery Passport initiative will be launched on Saturday, May 27 as part of a Celebrate Canada 150 event. The day of family fun and activities takes place at Gananoque’s Town Park in conjunction with the ninth annual Chalk the Walk sidewalk chalk art festival. This year’s artists are encouraged to cover the sidewalks with colourful chalk maple leaves in honour of Canada’s birthday. The passport project involves local people rediscovering their many “backyard” tourist attractions that draw travelers from around the world, explained Gananoque’s tourism co-ordinator Jennifer Baril. During the next week, households in Gananoque and Leeds and the Thousand Islands Township will receive in their mailboxes a passport that highlights deals, events and attractions in the region. The passport holder collects stamps after visiting the attractions throughout the summer. Submitting the passports back to the visitor centre at the end of the season will earn the holder a chance to win prizes, including a stay at a local hotel, a

helicopter flight, boat cruise and gift certificates. The idea is for local residents to get as excited about the area as tourists, Baril said. “You forget how great this place is,” when it is your own home, Baril added, noting one of the world’s select playgrounds is in our own backyard. Passports have a section for comments; Gananoque’s tourism department hopes the passport promotion will help increase its knowledge base on what interests locals and visitors and the best way to market the attractions, Baril said. The passport includes many backyard vacation options, Baril said, including boat cruises, helicopter tours, golfing, paint ball, brewery tours, library and lending programs and entertainment. Baril hopes residents will take advantage of experiences in the region through the new program “and take in some of the wonderful opportunities. I’m excited about it,” she said. The visitor centre at 10 King St. E. between town hall and the Susan Push historic train engine will act as a hub for the May 27 activities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A Nickel Cup hydroplane boat will be on display as a preview to the June 3-4 races in Gananoque. The day will be “a great opportunity for people of all ages to express

and display their artistic talents and enjoy live music,” said Chalk the Walk co-ordinator Jan Gravelle. The $2 registration fee to try your hand at sidewalk art includes the chalk and budding artists are welcome to bring special colours and props such as sponges or brushes for greater creativity and special effects, Gravelle said. Organizers expect 3-D chalk specialist Guy Wales and local artist David Day to be at the event. As

well, Canadian children’s book writer and illustrator Wallace Edwards will be creating comical drawings of some of the whimsical characters that appear in his books. The community festival also offers colouring tables, face painting, hemp tattoos, a bouncy castle, Scout barbecue fundraiser and live music by Spare Change and Dr. Orchestra’s One Man Band. Chalk the Walk partners with local service organizations, Dreams in

Motion, Scouts Canada, Boys and Girls Club and local schools and businesses to present the art festival. Mayors from Gananoque and Leeds and the Thousand Islands Township will be on hand for a cheque presentation with representatives from OLG and Shorelines Casino at noon. Brockville and Area Community Foundation names grant recipients BY DOREEN BARNES

The successful applications to the Brockville and Area Community Foundation (BACF) were revealed on Tuesday, May 9 in the Brockville Arts Centre gallery/lobby by Executive Director Joyce Ferguson. "It is certainly a special year for us because of Canada's 150th community matching grants, we are able to give twice out as much as we already do to the community," said Ferguson. From the 150th Community Fund for Canada (federal initiative), $40,000 was matched and delivered, along with the BACF Endowment Grants of $19,350 to local charities. The grants for Canada's 150th were presented to: Augusta Township Public Library — $3,500 toward the launch and promotion of a book, The Stones of Augusta; Brockville Community Choir — $1,000 for Music Monday; Brockville Public Library — $5,000 toward virtual reality experiences; Children's Mental Health of Leeds and Grenville (Making Play Possible) — $6,000 to connect children with artistic recreation; the City of Brockville — $9,000 broken down to the Tunnel Committee ($4,500 for official opening), Rails to Trails Festival ($4,500 to be used for the four-day event); Friends of the Brockville Museum — $5,000 for the Children's Newcomer's Exhibit; Thousand Islands River Heritage in Mallorytown — $6,000 toward updating a room to exhibit Canada's first glassworks; and Town of Prescott — 4,500 broken down to South Grenville ($2,000 to promote local and nationwide stories) and the

Fort Town Concert Association ($2,500 for classical-style music concerts). As for the Brockville and Area Community Foundation grants from endowments, the following were dispersed from the City of Brockville Legacy Endowment fund to the City of Brockville: $8,000 to the Douglas Scott Jr. Memorial Endowment; $1,000 to the St. Lawrence College Police Foundations Scholarship; the John and Margery Davis Endowment of $800 went to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Weekender Program for Kids; the Henry Merkx Memorial Bursary Endowment of $250 to Athens District High School, from the Hope Fund, Assistance for Medical Travel; $1,300 was awarded to May Court Club of Brockville; and the Thomas Dailey Endowment Fund of $8,000 went to the Historic Downtown Brockville for the Waterfront Walking Trails. The foundation was established in 1974 and is dedicated to establishing endowment funds to support charitable initiatives. "The foundation has given funding to many major projects including the restoration of Sally Grant, restoration of the Fulford Fountain, Sundial at Blockhouse Island, Project Encore at the Brockville Arts Centre, the signs along the Brock Trail, and just last November the opening of the Thomas P. Dailey Bridge," shared Ferguson. For the future, the hope is to achieve the $1-million mark in endowments as well as to build the unrestricted endowments to have a stable base to grant a substantial amount each year to local charities.

Charter member of the Thousand Islands Quilters' Guild and co-chair of the 2017 Show and Sale, Gloria Van Dusen, invites the public to this year's event, taking place at the Brockville Memorial Centre on May 26 to 28. "The theme this year is Celebrating our Canada: Reflections from the 1000 Islands," said Van Dusen. "Admission is $8 at the door, and there's plenty of parking." "The opening ceremony on Friday, May 26 at 10 a.m., will include Sir John A. and Mrs. Macdonald, Leeds-Grenville — Thousand Islands

Lucky auditions to be conducted for youth production in Brockville BY DOREEN BARNES

QUILT

From page 6

This interactive show and sale will give the public an opportunity to see demonstrations, talk with quilters, share ideas, participate in The Challenge, Block of the Month contest, and Viewers' Choice Awards. The challenge has 10 quilt entries, based on the theme of Celebrating our Canada: Reflections from the 1000 Islands, that the attendees can vote on, along with other categories. "We have 14 vendors signed up for the Merchant Mall who own businesses and stores all over Eastern

to 3 p.m., at St. John's United Church, 32 Park St., Brockville. "All that we require is that those who audition sing either O Canada or Happy Birthday," said Fleuriau Château. "They will also read some scenes from the show." The age group of the performers will be between 13 and 30, the target age group for the YOA, with the possibility of certain roles being played by some mature adults. The flexible cast is up to 18 people (six males and 12 female characters), with an optional chorus and the possibility of giving certain performers more than one part. This 90-minute show has a mini-

mal set (some indoor and outdoor set pieces that can be done very simply, yet effectively). "We are doing Lucky Dollar, Private Eye because it is a lot of fun and extremely accessible to any level of experienced performers," explained Fleuriau Château. According to the description by Pioneer Drama, the musical is a merry mix of mayhem, melody and mania. The search is for the deadly Pearl of Persia, with bodies piling up. Ladies find Lucky irresistible. He's arrested on a murder rap because of that weird bird, the California Chicken.

Ontario," added Van Dusen. "Also, Victoria's Quilts and Quilts of Valour have been given free booths." As for the Thousand Islands Quilters' Guild Boutique, there will be handcrafted items that have been made over the last two years such as carrying bags, pin cushions, runners, purses, wall hangings, placemats, and anything to do with quilting. "For the silent auction, people will be able to make bids — even for the husbands, as golf courses donate a day of golfing," stated Van Dusen. In a corner of the Brockville Memorial Civic Centre, both the vendors and the members will give demonstra-

tions, either on quilting tools or sharing of quilting techniques. "The Tea Room was started two years ago and now we offer a lunch, a place to sit down and relax, and it is very popular," mentioned Van Dusen. "This year, it will be the Brockberry Café taking care of it." This not-for-profit organization of 109 members filters the funds right back into the community charities — Meals on Wheels, Babies in Crisis to name a couple — plus donations of quilts. For more information, visit www. thousandislandsquiltersguild.com or contact Linda Moir at 613-340-1229.

"Suitable for all groups, this is a real crowd-pleaser," noted Fleuriau Château. "I'm the producer, a role that I have not done, which scares me a bit. But I will be helped by Christopher Coyea, Judy Quick, Lance Besharah and others." Performances will take place on Thursday, July 6 and Friday, July 7 at 7 p.m. with a matinee on Saturday, July 8 at 2 p.m., on the new stage in the sanctuary at St. John's. Letter to the Editor

Enjoy theatre experience at the cinema DEAR EDITOR:

On Saturday afternoon, May 20, at the Galaxy Cinema there will be a screening of a National Theatre play from London, England, "Twelfth Night" by William Shakespeare. The National Theatre Live series screens plays from theatres in London to cinemas throughout the world. In Brockville, we get the encore presentations but they are not well attended here because no one seems to know about them. In January I saw a screening of "No Man's Land" by Harold Pinter with Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart in a packed cine-

ma in Etobicoke. Twelve people saw the same play in Brockville. I have even seen one play in Brockville on my own. It is a little creepy being alone in a cinema, especially when I heard someone cough behind me. It was someone coughing in London - the wonders of surround sound! Daniel Radcliffe will be in "Rosencrantz and Guidenstern are Dead" on May 25. How many people will see it in Brockville? If you enjoy high quality theatre check out National Theatre Live and Cineplex special events. There are six more plays this summer and they will all be worth seeing. Anne Lusby

The rural hospitality to which we referred last week in the context of checking on the well-being of neighbours by way of ensuring they have working smoke alarms and CO detectors certainly applies to the efforts taking place in nearby communities and others throughout the region this month to assist those who are affected by record-high water levels. Whether it’s the volunteer firefighters who are going up and down county and township roads to check on waterfront properties and the people who live there, or the bed and breakfast and motel operators who are offering accommodation to those who have been displaced from their homes, we commend the actions of those who are giving of their time and resources during the difficult times facing some residents of low-lying areas that have been put at risk by the force of nature. These examples of going above and beyond are what the rest of us should also be taking note of as we watch coverage of hardest-hit areas in other areas of Ontario and Quebec and try to comprehend the impact these water levels are having now and in the long term. And although we understand the interest in the subject and acknowledge that we also, at times, visit flood-affected areas and obtain visuals of high-water levels and the damage they cause, it is another thing to infringe on the efforts being made by property owners and first responders who are dealing with such situations. To hear that more than one curiosity seeker has put up a fuss or gotten into an argument because he was being prevented from getting too close to the action — even on a private road — is disappointing. Fortunately, the vast majority of motorists and boaters understand the severity of the problem and are respecting advisories to not get in the way or to not make waves.

24th of May held many the mystery for young Mary My sister Audrey was in an unusual talking mood that Saturday morning. There would be no visiting with her friend Iva. Aunt Bertha, Iva’s mother, was into the Spring housecleaning, and every hand was needed. We were sitting in the grape arbour, yet to sprout its leaves, swinging in the twoseater, and I thought it was a good time to ask Audrey something that had been on my mind since the nicer weather came around. There was something unusual to me about the date, the 24th of May. It seemed to me, that was almost a magical day, because so much depended on it. My thinking about it started the Sunday before when we were scarcely into the beginning of the month, and I came down stairs ready for church, and wearing my new white gloves. Mother had bought at the Five and Dime store for 19 cents a pair, which to me was a princely price to pay, but

I had outgrown the hand-me-down ones Audrey had worn before me. As soon as Mother saw them on me, she said I would have to take them off, because you couldn’t wear white gloves until after the 24th of May. That was news to me, but when I asked Mother why, she said ‘just because’, which was supposed to satisfy me, but didn’t. And even though it was as hot as blazes out, Mother came out of the bedroom in her felt hat with the cluster of cherries on the crown. hat with the satin ribbon on it that Aunt Lilly had brought her from Ottawa, but according to my sister Audrey, you just couldn’t wear a summer hat until after the 24th of May. Well, there it was again, that 24th of May business. Father said an early Spring meant an early Summer, and he was right, because even though it was May, it was as hot as blazes, and Mother was already pulling the blinds down in the house after breakfast, and keeping everything locked up tight during the day. And that meant the Bonnechere River was warmed up too. Of course, my three brothers were dying to have a dip after school, and on Saturdays after chores. But Mother said there would be no swimming in the Bonnechere until after the 24th of May! And it didn’t matter how hot it got! Well, this was all very confusing to me. little wood boxes of flowers had sprouted and to me, looked like they were ready to blossom, and I was sure she would be out planting them in the beds Father had gotten ready. Well, there it was again: there would be no planting of flowers until after the 24th of May! And so that Saturday sitting in the swing with my sister Audrey, I asked her again, what was so special about the 24th of May, when, it seemed to me, the entire world revolved around that day. Audrey pursed her lips and went deep into thought. She said she was pretty sure it had to do with the old woman in Renfrew who told fortunes. She said she thought she had put a curse on the day. I asked her what a curse had to do with wearing white gloves, a straw hat, or swimming in the Bonnechere, and how she could possibly send a curse all the way out to aDvertising: Connie Seguin David Fox Shawn Ogilvie advertising sales Manager: Wayne Thornhill Managing editor Marla Dowdall editor Tim Ruhnke 613-498-0305 the DeaDline for Display aDvertising is friDay 4:30 pM

My sister Audrey thought for the longest minute, and then said that some things just couldn’t be explained, and for our own good we’d better accept them, or we could get into serious trouble. With no money, the Depression all around us, depending on a rich aunt from Regina for the very clothes on our backs, and many other things beyond our control, I figured I would just have to accept Audrey’s explanation because more trouble was something we didn’t need. After all, wasn’t she in Senior Fourth and the smartest girl at the Northcote School? And if anyone knew the answer to the mystery of the 24th of May, it would be my sister Audrey. ED-19 approvals remain valid if no significant changes to plan: ministry services of the Canadian Environmental Law Association. Johnston also indicated to council that there has been talk that Tomlinson might be planning to operate a transfer station on land adjacent to the counties-owned ED-19 property, and that there would soon be shovels in the ground. Approvals for a proposed Leeds and Grenville landfill site dubbed ED-19 that were issued in the late 1990s remain valid, according to an official with the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change. The united counties did not proceed with that plan but had been, until recently, negotiating with a private firm about the possible sale of the counties-owned property on Byers Road in Edwardsburgh Cardinal Township. Those discussions with Tomlinson Group were put on hold by counties Leeds and Grenville eariier this year; word of the possible sale sparked significant public interest in the township and resulted in the creation of the Citizens Against the Dump group. Council directed staff to write to the provincial environment minister and seek clarification of the status of approvals granted by the ministry when the counties considered creating a waste management facility at ED-19 for use by municipalities in Leeds and Grenville as well as the possible use by the so-called separated municipalities of Brockville and Prescott. The agenda package for council's committeeof-the-whole meeting held last Tuesday morning (May 9) included two letters sent to counties officials by Mansoor Mahmood from the environmental approvals branch of the ministry. He wrote in a letter dated April 10 that the EA and environmental compliance approvals issued in the late 1990s "...remain legally valid provided the proposed undertaking has not changed significantly." Mahmood advised the counties to submit a report to confirm that a proposal use of ED-19 is consistent with the approved undertaking. "If the report were to show a change in circumstance or new information that wasn't presented at the time of approval the ministry will then determine how to proceed," the ministry official stated. Mahmood indicated that the response to the counties is on behalf of the minister and the director of the ministry's eastern region office Tomlinson had been expressing an interest in acquiring the counties-owned property and operating a waste management facility that would also process materials from outside the Leeds and Grenville area. The ED-19 proposal from the 1990s had the counties as being the proponent and operating the site. Leeds and the Thousand islands Mayor Joe Baptista put forward at the council meeting the

Other than a reporter, Johnston was the only person in the gallery at the end of the meeting. Athens Mayor Herb Scott chairs the Leeds and Grenville committee-of-the-whole meeting on Tuesday, May 9. idea of creating a task force that would identify the waste management, diversion and recycling needs of the counties and its member municipalities and create a vision that might include ED-19 for its original purpose or for a different use. "It's prudent planning on our part," said Baptista, who commented that the letters from the ministry confirm the value of ED-19. "This asset has been validated, in my opinion," he stated. Several mayors appeared to support the concept of a task force. Baptista's proposal will be put to council in the form of a formal motion at the May 25 meeting. Kyle Johnston of the Citizens of the Dump group asked about the current status of ED-19 during the public question period at the end of the committee meeting. Athens Mayor Herb Scott, who chaired the meeting, told Johnston he has the counties' word that there are no negotiations right now involving the possible sale of the property. There was speculation earlier in the meeting as to whether Tomlinson remains interested in acquiring the counties-owned land. Johnston confirmed to council that the group has made a formal request to the environment minister about the validity of the ED-19 approvals. The opposition group has retained the

Event at MERC Hall in Maitland to raise awareness of rare syndrome A local family wants to make others aware of a rare autoimmune disorder. Ameliya Pellett was suddenly diagnosed with Guillain-Barre (pronounced gee-YAH-buhRAY) syndrome (GBS) following a respiratory infection last October, leaving the two-and-ahalf year old temporarily paralyzed from the neck down.

GBS is a rare disorder in which the body's immune system attacks the nerves. Weakness and tingling in extremities are usually the first symptoms. These sensations can quickly spread, eventually paralyzing the entire body. There's no known cure for GBS, but several treatments can ease symptoms and reduce the duration of the illness. Most people recover

from GBS, though some may experience lingering effects such as weakness, numbness or fatigue. With the month of May being Guillain-Barre Awareness Month, the Pelletts believed it was the perfect time to plan a fundraising event, raising awareness of the illness their daughter went misdiagnosed with for a week, with the hopes that the next person finds treatment much quicker. The awareness fundraiser will take place at MERC Hall in Maitland on Sunday, May 28 from 11 a.m. — 3 p.m. The event includes a Woodland’s Chicken BBQ, with numerous salads, drinks and desserts, with the option to eat in or take out. Tickets are pre-sale only until May 21 at $15 each. The event also includes a large silent auction; proceeds raised from both the auction and the BBQ will be going to CHEO’s neurology and rehabilitation units, where Ameliya spent the entire month of October last year. Donations will also be going to Hotel Dieu’s

KidsInclusive Program in Kingston, where Ameliya currently does her outpatient physiotherapy on a weekly basis, as well as the GBS/ CIDP Foundation for further research. Entertainment for the event is free, and includes Ray’s Reptiles 11:30-1230, Boldt Studio Dancers and kids face painting. The family would love to see as many people attend the event as possible, to both spread awareness of GBS, and to also thank the community and everyone for the continued support as Ameliya now recovers at home and learns to walk again. “I’ve asked myself 'why' so many times since the day Ameliya got sick, and I soon realized that this was the reason: to spread awareness of GBS across the globe while watching the incredible strength of someone so small, overcome and beat the odds," Ameliya’s mom Miranda said. The Brockville area has range of jobs: EEC Some people think there is a shortage of reasonable employment in the Brockville area. However, as of early May, The Employment + Education Centre (EEC) has many jobs either posted on the agency’s job board or waiting to be filled through the agency’s employment coaches and job developers. “We have many employers who are looking for jobs to be filled,” EEC employer services co-ordinator Kim Barkley stated in a release issued on Thursday, May 11. She added that the agency has upwards of 50 jobs which are awaiting applicants. These jobs are available across a wide swath of fields. Among the local employers who are looking to hire include construction, landscaping and lawn maintenance, truck driving, cooking and food service, janitorial and maintenance, and customer service. “This time of year is good for job seekers,” Kim notes. “If you take a look at our job board, it’s obvious there are many jobs available in our area for people with a variety of skill sets.” EEC offers a variety of ways for job seekers to prepare for job searching and employment. This includes employment coaching, resume development and interview coaching. As well, the agency offers workshops on WHMIS, AODA customer service training and Smart Serve to name just a few Several of the jobs are for summer students. Students are reminded that EEC can assist with both application and preparation for summer jobs. In addition, young people are also encouraged to see whether or not they are qualified to take EEC’s Youth Job Connection summer program for youth 15-18. Older workers who are invited to look into the Experience Works program for people 50plus. Many of these jobs mentioned in this article are listed on the EEC’s job board, which can easily be accessed at www.eecentre.com. All of the agency’s programs and workshops are also listed here. The EEC has a resource centre to assist with resumes and provides computer access to help apply for jobs. It is a place where anyone can do employment-related activities such as printing off cover letters and resumes. The hours of the agency are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; on Wednesdays the agency is open until 7 p.m.

Calling all the Websters: family reunion set for Oak Leaf on June 17 As we turn our attention to the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation, we need to remember that Canada is not simply a document or a land mass or a railroad, but a collection of people. People make up a country and build the infrastructure to make it work. Those people come from families, and one of those families has been building this country for a very long time. The Webster family celebrates a reunion every five years, and that cycle falls on this year, 2017. This will be the 205th year celebration of the Webster family emigrating from Ireland to Eastern Ontario. Since that time we have cleared land, gone to war, helped build a country and been witness to the rise of Canada on the international stage. We have migrated throughout Canada and North America, but as we did so, we have always held a warm remembrance of our initial steps in Ontario and kept a special place in our hearts for Eastern Ontario. Because of that, every five years many of us make the trek back to the east Ontario “homeland”– and this time will be no different. We will be gathering at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Oak Leaf on Saturday, June 17, for a day of remembrance and celebration to mark this 205th year. As usual, we extend the invitation to all Websters as well as anyone interested in mingling with the family or just wanting to enjoy some

potluck on a (hopefully) sunny Saturday afternoon. Now, some brief history … During the Irish Rebellion of 168890, a time when the British Isles were in great religious turmoil, three Webster brothers, in a regiment under British commander Colonel Ram, were in action in Ireland. As the hostilities finally ceased, (culminating in the Battle of the Boyne) these three brothers were granted land and settled in the County of Wexford, Ireland. While in Wexford, one of the descendants of these men had three sons: Robert, Nathaniel and John. With religion and nationality still a tinder box, rebellion once again broke out in the year 1798. As Wexford County was one of the focal points of this uprising, the Websters, ever loyal to their country and religion, were thrown into the fray and took up arms against the rebellion. Robert (one of the three sons of the original Websters of Wexford) who had lived in the old homestead, was “piked” by members of the rebellion, and thrown over the Enniscorthy Bridge in the presence of two of his 11 children: daughter Mary and son Nathaniel. His eldest child, Edward, then became the “man of the house” taking Robert’s place in the homestead. Edward (the eldest) then had six sons and one daughter, but only one son, “Edward the Tanner” immigrated to Canada and settled in Escott. Edward being the eldest, stayed

in Ireland at the homestead of Garrybritt, Wexford County. However, nine of Edward’s siblings immigrated to Canada between 1812 and 1817. These siblings all settled in Oak Leaf, with most being buried there and at least one being buried in Union Cemetery. Mary (Sam Copeland), Martha (Mattie) (Major George Johnston), Elizabeth (John Foley), Margaret (Peggy) (Long John Johnston), Eleanor (Long George Johnston), Robert B. Sr. (Alice Boardman), William Sr. (Alice Murphy), Barbara (Richard Leech), and Nathaniel (Elizabeth Johnston) settled in Oak Leaf. Martha (Mattie) is buried in Union Cemetery. There are no records of where Elizabeth is buried, and the remaining seven are buried in Oak Leaf Cemetery. In addition, Thomas immigrated in 1817 to Prescott, later moving to the Bay of Quinte and Cavan Township. Of the three original sons, Nathaniel, the second son of the old soldier, came to Canada and settled in the Brockville area (likely New Dublin). His descendants include sons Richard, William, Thomas and Nathaniel. The third original son, John, had four children: Robert, John, Edward and William. Robert took part in the same rebellion in which his uncle

Vinegar Hill, Enniscorthy, Ireland Robert (piked at Enniscorthy) had been killed. In May 1798, he too died, but instead of a piking, he was killed on the battlefield at Vinegar Hill. Descendants of John immigrated at different times to Canada, settling eventually in the Lansdowne area.

All this rich history is just one of the building blocks of the country we call home. So mark your calendar for the 205th Webster Reunion and come out and help celebrate the history of a proud family of Canadians called the Websters.

Extended warranties are up for discussion; ask about the differences Recently, I asked readers to submit their experiences with extended vehicle warranties and it didn’t take long to get some responses. “Hi, Brian, Thanks for your column! I'm reading it in the St. Lawrence News. A close relative worked in clerical for a car dealership (decades ago), and said quite bluntly, "Don't buy them. Overall, this is a profit-making enterprise for the industry." Let alone that there may be commissions for the sales staff. Now: it’s like insurance - we know that the industry makes a profit, but we pay to avoid even the possibility of a catastrophic financial loss. Car repairs can be expensive, but are not usually catastrophic. My only experience was a usedvehicle warranty, which was pitched to me quite aggressively. When I later had drive-train trouble, beyond the basic warranty, I felt vindicated ... except that I wasn't covered. I checked my policy fine print, and I was covered! No, the dealer said (and I just now recently learned that extended warranties are not car-manufacturer products, so you can have the work done anywhere), you have a deductible. But the cost of the repair was well over the deductible! No, they said, the price we quoted you is the retail price,

BRIAN TURNER

but if we repair it under warranty, it's at the wholesale price, which is under your deductible. Let alone that the drivetrain design was faulty, that was my last purchase of an extended warranty. The Simpsons (animated TV series). I have never really watched it, but have picked up a few things. Homer had a crayon lodged in his skull (up his nose), from an early age, which interfered with this intellectual ability (Doh!). Eventually when this came to light, some clever surgeon removed it, which resulted in a great cognitive improvement. It took some time before Homer and his peeps realized that they all preferred him the way he was before. No surgeon would reinsert the crayon, so Moe, of Moe's Bar, did it, hammering it in bit by bit, asking Homer intellectual questions as he did, to test the effect. At one point, Moe asked, "What do you think of automotive extended warranties?" Homer answered, "I think they're a

quire original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts be used and if you have a beef about a bill, you have some recourse through the carmaker’s consumer affairs division. Some repair shops won’t deal with certain after-market warranty plans while all factory retailers must honour the carmaker guarantees. Dealerships, as independent retailers are free to offer both types of warranties, but you should ask about the differences between them and check to see if your regular non-dealer repair shop will deal with them. The first (hopefully warm) long weekend is upon us and with it comes collector and modified vehicle shows. On Saturday, May 20 the Old School ¼ Mile Armdrop Drags, Car & Bike Show happens at the Historic Picton Airfield in Picton, Ontario. There will be great photo ops at this cool WWII airfield. Gates open at 11 a.m., and the races and show run from 12-6 p.m. Entry fees for spectators are $5 (includes car in show) and a racer’s day pass cost

$25. On Monday the 22nd, the City of Cornwall in conjunction with the Major and Canada 150 Committee and the Cornwall Olde Car Club present the Major’s Picnic in the Park (Lamoureux) in Cornwall, Ontario from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. ‘Cruising the Park’ is the theme. This promises to be a family day event for young and old. Come and participate in races, tug-a-war, special attractions, all free. If you have any questions, opinions, or stories on anything automotive please drop me a line, [By email to bjoeturner@hotmail.com listing ‘Question for the Car Counselor’ on the subject line or by post to Record News Communications, 65 Lorne St., P.O. great idea!" Moe surmised, "The crayon has gone in far enough." C First, yes, extended warranties are a profit centre for any automotive retailer and the margins and commissions can be quite healthy. Whenever I’m asked by a customer if they’re really worth it, I always ask them about their risk aversion and their vehicle maintenance budgeting. If they don’t mind taking their chances and have a bank account that can handle repair bills, they’re probably better off without the plan. But consider that on average carmakers set aside roughly 10 per cent of the revenue from each vehicle they sell as warranty reserves and you get an idea of what they expect to spend on repairs under the terms of their basic and power-train warranties. So if you’re buying a $15K entry level auto, spending $2,500 on an extended plan might not make much sense, but things can appear much differently on a $40K$50K (or more expensive) product. Secondly, extended warranties are available from both the carmaker and after-market firms. While after-market companies may offer the convenience of having covered repairs done at non-dealership service centres, the automakers’ plans are usually better. They always re-

Brockville Rifles deployed to Quebec to assist with flood relief effort BY DOREEN BARNES

Saturday morning, 11 Brockville Rifles checked their kit for equipment and personal items, and with a cot they boarded a bus bound for Ottawa (via Cornwall to pick up more soldiers), to become part of 470 personnel from the 31, 32 and 33 Canadian Brigades Groups Domestic Response companies. The army reserves are joining other military units for a joint assist in relief operations to support Quebecers dealing with flooding. They are part of 2,600 Canadian Armed Forces personnel deployed to four affected areas in Quebec, Montérégie, Outaouais, Mauricie and Montréal. "The National Command overseeing the flood relief operation in Ontario and Québec has asked the Brockville Rifles and other units within our 33 brigade, in Ottawa, to provide troops to assist in the ongoing flood relief, and assistance to provincial and municipal emergency services," said the Rifles' Commanding Officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Paul d'Orsonnens. Their jobs will include filling and distributing sandbags to help solidify existing structures and protect critical infrastructure, use of military vehicles to assist civil authorities in keeping critical arteries open, and helping evacuate citizens to safe areas.

The Canadian Armed Forces will conduct presence patrols to monitor critical infrastructure, as well as proceed with the preventive reinforcement of dikes and walls for protection of critical infrastructure such as water treatment plants and bridges. In addition to this operation, there are other "Brocks" on training or instructing missions. For 17 years, Master Corporal Ryan Moss has been a Brockville Rifles member and he believes that this tasking is another aspect of being in the service. "I'm a full-time electrician, and I think it is important that we step up to help the community and the residents," said Moss. "There are a lot of guys willing to go, but we were only allowed to send 11." Moss, who spent six months in Afghanistan in 2006, is looking forward to arriving at the staging area in Ottawa, learn what needs to be done and if need be separate the Brocks into sections. "We have individuals that have special qualifications and they may be tasked to do different things," added Moss. As Moss indicated, for the size of Brockville, there have been many individuals that have served in Afghanistan and have gone onto the regular force. "Canadians are good at coming together in times of need and any-

Home and gardening tips to make your outdoor space your favourite place!

Combat summer heat with a shade garden

There’s no better feeling on a sweltering hot day than finding a cool, shady spot where you can hide from the sun’s powerful rays. Creating a shade garden for UV and heat protection is an increasingly popular trend, and garden centres everywhere have a variety of shade-hardy plants in stock to brighten up the space. Pick a shady area in your yard to set up a magnificent garden where you’ll be free to relax and cool off, refreshing drink in hand. Create your very own oasis of peace by adding a bench, lounge chair or hamac accompanied by a little side table. For a more elaborate design, bring in some garden furniture and install a fountain or even a play area for the children. Are you afraid the space will look too dark and lifeless? Rest assured! By selecting a variety of plants that thrive in the shade, you

can easily achieve a beautiful and inviting garden. First, determine the type of shade you’re dealing with (light, medium or dense). To help guide you, note the number of hours of sunlight that space typically gets on any given day. Furthermore, are there any tree roots present in the area? Is the soil rich or poor, dry or moist? Before heading out to your favourite garden centre, jot down every detail you can about the space you intend to turn into a shade garden. This way, the specialists in store will be able to recommend plants that will grow without difficulty, regardless of the lack of sun exposure. Naturally, flowering plants that thrive in the shade are far and few between. Thus, to succeed in creating a beautiful shade garden, it’s recommended to play with the shapes, textures and colours of the foliage instead. On that note, happy gardening!

Three golden rules for getting BIRDS to flock to your garden If you wish to attract migrating birds and their hatchlings to your garden while they’re home for the summer and still stay loyal to the species that frequent your garden year-round, read on for some key tips.

MAINTENANCE AND CARE Once it takes root, this new verbena variety can easily withstand arid conditions. To ensure optimal growth, water up to three times a week and fertilize twice a month. Contrary to similar verbena varieties, this one doesn’t produce many seeds, which means the risk of it becoming invasive in following years is slim to none.

INTERESTING FACTS Although characterized by a rapid and vigorous growth, this variety of the South American verbena remains relatively compact. It’s therefore a perfect fit for flowerpots or small- to medium-sized flowerbeds that aren’t suitable for other types of verbena, which can reach up to two metres in height. For a truly remarkable sight, combine the ‘Meteor Shower’ — which also happens to be a butterfly magnet — with orange flowers.

Natural stone integrates perfectly with every type of property, regardless of style. Whether you dream of a modern terrace design or something more rustic that will complement your garden and surrounding landscape, your dreams can become reality with a beautiful, natural stone floor! It all depends on your choice of stone and installation technique.

ping experts, as well as companies specialized in the manufacture of natural stone, can skilfully create real works of art. For a sophisticated design, natural stone carved with a guillotine offers a clean-cut finish, while stone cut by hand is ideal for those more rustic projects. The installation of natural stone is in itself a creative process that requires exceptional attention to detail.

There are many reasons why natural stone terraces have remained a popular choice among homeowners for so long. First and foremost, stone is a robust material that requires very little maintenance. Forget about repainting or re-staining each year! Next, because every stone is unique, it’s very possible to create an original patio design that won’t go unnoticed. In fact, landsca-

1000 Islands and Rideau Canal Garden Trail grows from grassroots BY TIM RUHNKE truhnke@metroland.com

It's season three for the 1000 Islands and Rideau Canal Garden Trail. The local attraction's launch event was held at Fulford Place on Friday morning. The national historic site in Brockville has been added to the list of garden trail sites for 2017. There are now 14 unique public and private venues included in the program that was created by the economic development department of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. The garden trail has grown from nine sites in 2015. David Cybulski, who co-chairs the initiative with Leeds and Grenville economic development director Ann Weir, noted that the garden trail vision is to serve as a must-see tourist destination. "I believe we're well on our way," he stated. Cybulski, co-owner of Maitland Garden of Hope, indicated that the attraction is being recognized far and wide; garden trail officials are being invited by organizations from farther away to make presentations, he noted. The 1000 Islands and Rideau Canal Garden Trail is the only attraction of its kind to be honoured with a Canada 150 Garden Experience designation. The 2017 edition of the garden trail includes Diane and Keith Haskins, Portland; Gardens of Gananoque;

Wilstead Manor Gardens, Leeds and the Thousand Islands; Ivy Lea Club, Lansdowne; Chillane Gardens, Mallorytown; Garden of Hope and Faith Walk, Lyn; Fulford Place, Brockville; Maitland Garden of Hope; Van Berlo Gardens, Maitland; Shakespearean Gardens, Prescott; Healing Circle Labyrinth, Johnstown; Machal Gardens, Spencerville; A Labour of Love, Oxford Station; and Rideau Woodland Ramble, North Grenville. Leeds and Grenville Warden Robin Jones, who jokingly described herself as being the blackest thumb she knows, praised the garden trail initiative as well as the staff and volunteers working together. "This is really a cooperative effort," said Jones, the mayor of Westport. She acknowledged the economic impact of the attraction, noting that visitors can "just bask in the beauty" of the garden trail sites. The Leeds and Grenville area has become a destination for garden enthusiasts, Mary Ann Van Berlo noted as she talked about the 2016 garden trail season. The local gardens were cited as the primary reason for visits by 34 tour buses, some of which spent up to five days in the united counties area. "I've seen repeat visitors," she told the launch audience. Van Berlo Tim Ruhnke/Metroland is looking forward to another strong Representatives from most of the 1000 Islands and Rideau Canal Garden Trail sites gather in Brockville on season in 2017. Friday, May 12. Fulford Place, which hosted the launch of the local attraction’s third season, has been added

Cybulski indicated that it is part of the garden trail's five-year plan to have each municipality in the Leeds and Grenville area represented as part of the tour. The other mayors on hand at the launch were David Henderson from Brockville, Doug Malanka from Augusta and Pat Sayeau from Edwardsburgh Cardinal. The united counties spent $5,000 to $6,000 on the garden trail program in each of its first two years, and a similar amount has been budgeted for 2017. The funding has been used primarily to produce the trail brochure, which Weir

indicated is distributed by volunteers or through other programs with which Leeds and Grenville is involved. The brochures are available at the sites as well as at tourism and visitor centres in the region. Weir said the project would not be happening without the support of counties council, adding that the member sites are the "special ingredient." Cybulski and Jones credited Weir and her staff for making the trail a reality. Some sites are already open; the rest will be as of June. There is no admission fee to the garden areas. For more information about the 14 sites and their hours of operation (including guided and self-guided tours), visit www.gardentrail.10 00islandsandrideaucanal.com.

These six are talented musicians who have performed in musicals and concerts, garnering fans as they go. The audience will hear an eclectic mix of music

Carnival time at St. Mark School in Prescott

Many homeless Rwandan children will have a roof over their heads, food and clothing, thanks to the fundraising efforts of St. Mark Catholic School students in Prescott. Thursday, May 11 was the school’s fourth year running their Carnival of Hope that supports the Organization for Rwandan Youth at Risk. The theme of the day-long carnival is Children Helping Children, and offers a white elephant sale and boutique table, games, a photo booth, raffles and other activities that raise about $3,000 and goes directly to support about three or four Rwandan children. The organization raises approximately $16,000 annually through various events in Eastern Ontario to provide basic living needs for about 27 children each year. Here, from left, Grade 5 students Hope Speck, Marae Brown and Skylar Billings show off some of the items that captured their attention at the carnival.

Guardians have their hands full in the next chapter of Marvel series MOVIE: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 STARRING: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan and Kurt Russell DIRECTOR: James Gunn RATING: PG The only thing that needs to be said about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is ‘see it’. Don't wait. Don't bother to finish reading this review. Go now. Right now. OK, if you’re reading the rest of this you're either back from seeing it, or you decided to wait in which case there's only so much I can do. Just know you're delaying seeing the emotional thrill ride of the year.

My Take

Mark haskins

After saving a race known as The Sovereign, the Guardians find themselves in hot water from the Sovereign's High Priestess, Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki). It would seem Rocket (Bradley Cooper) stole some of the batteries they were supposed to protect. Peter (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista) baby

Groot (Vin Diesel), Rocket and their prisoner Nebula (Karen Gillan) manage to escape the wrath of Ayesha, and crash land on a remote planet. Though their escape isn't unaided. The celestial Ego (Kurt Russell) steps in to save the Guardians. Ego, and his companion Mantis (Pom Klementieff), have been looking for Peter for a long time. Ego is Peter's father. Peter is stunned, but agrees to go with Ego. Peter, Gamora and Drax travel with Ego to see what they can learn. Meanwhile Rocket and Groot are left to repair the ship and keep an eye on Nebula. Soon after everything falls apart. Yondu (Michael Rooker) and his Reavers come looking for Peter. The Sovereign continues to hunt the Guardians, and of course Ego isn't what he seems. Secrets are revealed and truths are learned. In the end The Guardians find themselves besieged on all sides, standing back to back as the only thing between the universe and utter destruction. I believe the line goes, "I laughed. I cried. It became a part of me." Guardians 2 is a rare film that had me laughing out loud, on the edge of my seat, and tugging on my heart strings. It's exquisitely balanced between a fun popcorn flick full of dazzling visuals, and a heartfelt emotional story. The cast is an unbelievable mix of natural chemistry and raw talent. Mi-

chael Rooker will make you cry. Karen Gillan will bring you to your feet, and Pom Klementieff will delight. Bradley Cooper is so good as the voice of Rocket, and it's silly what Vin Diesel can do with just three words. Dave Bautista has truly elevated his game. Zoe Saldana is wickedly good, and only Kurt Russell could pull off a character named Ego. Chris Pratt perfectly embodies this

film. He brings the funny and the action, and he brings the heart. He's brilliant. Sequels used to be about making the same movie only bigger and better, which is why they usually sucked. Marvel doesn't make sequels. They focus on telling the next chapter in the story, and I can't wait for each one. Mark Haskins’ column is a regular feature.

These soufflés are great any time This is a versatile recipe as it works for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Goat cheese (Chèvre), about 4 oz (125 g), can be substituted for the cheddar. Prescott Air Cadets visit the capitol, take on challenges and enjoy adventures The spring has already had lots to offer youth involved in the Prescottbased Air Cadet squadron, and we’ve only just begun. Local air cadets have had a great deal of fun over the months of April and have a good deal of variety planned for the month of May as well. This has included a trip to Washington, a field training exercise and first aid training, and is set to include familiarization flying and a multi-unit

sports competition. This is all in addition to regular training opportunities and the preparation for cadets to enjoy summer training scholarships at training centres across Ontario (which will begin in July). The key to the cadet program is its youth leaders, and 661 Squadron has many to be proud of. Recent merit boards held by representatives of the Regional Cadet Support Unit and Air Cadet League of Canada resulted in

recommendations for several senior rank promotions. On May 1, the unit Commanding Officer, Captain Lewis Jenkins, was pleased to promote Francis Lalonde and Joel Beriault to the rank of Warrant Officer Second Class. Danielle Larocque, who holds the appointment of Squadron Warrant Officer, was promoted to Warrant Officer First Class (the highest rank that an air cadet can obtain). Congratulations are extended to these and other cadets

who have recently received reward and recognition for their efforts. Although the cadet year is well underway, those between the ages of 12 and 18 who consider joining the cadet program now will still have the chance to participate in numerous activities as we prepare for the summer. Cadets who have recently turned 12 or who are thinking of joining the program at an older age may be pleased to learn about fast-tracking options that allow

you to catch up to your peers in the program. Alternatively, you can look to join in on the fun when we actively seek new members again in the fall. Drop by any Tuesday evening at South Grenville DHS between 6:30 and 9 p.m. to visit the squadron. You can follow the squadron on Facebook or check out www.aircadets.ca/661 to learn more about what the cadet program has to offer.

ST. LAWRENCE NEWS - Thursday, May 18, 2017 33

OPP remind drivers to be alert in construction zones The Ontario Provincial Police and the Ministry of Transportation are reminding motorists that construction season is here and that drivers need to be extra cautious. The MTO are reporting in excess of 200 construction projects underway around the province. These projects consist of highway expansions, bridge replacements and road maintenance which may result in road clo-

sures, reduced lanes, lane realignments and reduced speed limits. Drivers should be prepared for possible delays in these areas and plan accordingly. Drivers should remain vigilant at all times. The OPP will be closely monitoring traffic in these areas and actively enforcing the Highway Traffic Act (HTA). Drivers are reminded that speeding fines are doubled in construction

zones where workers are present and that loss of driver's licence and vehicle seizure provisions apply for the offence of speeding. If you are travelling throughout Ontario, updated information on roads and construction projects can be obtained by calling 511, or by following the MTO on Twitter @511Ontario. Submitted by the OPP

Hi there. My name is Ally. I’m a quiet two-year-old female cat. In our Meet Your Match Program I’m a Purple Private Investigator. I’m working undercover to keep an eye on you and your household. You may not even know you’re under surveillance. I can vanish into thin air if anyone or anything interferes with my investigation. If you need a cat who knows how to stay out of trouble and will always keep your secrets, I just might take your case. My adoption fee includes the cost of my surgery, microchip identification, de-worming and flea/tick protection, my first set of vaccinations, and six weeks of complimentary pet insurance. Come by the Ontario SPCA - Leeds and Grenville Animal Centre, located at 800 Centennial Rd., Brockville, to see about adopting me. Our Adoption Centre is open seven days a week (Saturday-Sunday 12 p.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.). Phone us at 613-345-5520 or email us at leedsgrenville@ospca.on.ca . We’re also on Facebook (Ontario SPCA Leeds & Grenville Animal Centre) to keep up with our ongoing activities.

Emergency phone/email scam has not gone away Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to warn the public that the emergency / grandparent scam has surfaced in the area again. On April 27, police received a fraud complaint after a local resident sent over $7,000 to Gambia in West Africa after receiving an emergency email from someone posing as a friend requesting financial help. In these cases, the victim typically receives a frantic phone call or an emergency email from someone claiming to be a grandchild, friend or loved one. The scammer will explain they are involved in some sort of legal trouble, have been injured or are having trouble returning from a foreign country and need money right away. With the emergency/grandparent scam the scammer attempts to create a sense of urgency which may cause the victim to not verify the story. The scammer will often insist that the victim not tell anyone and to transfer the money that has been requested through a money transfer company. Also, many scammers want to trick you into providing your banking and personal information. In fact, the criminals will fraudulently use your personal information to steal your money. If a scam artist contacts you or if you have been defrauded, contact your local police service and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC). You can file a report with the CAFC by calling 1-888-495-8501 (Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST) or by using their online reporting tool at www.antifraudcentre.ca.

Community support keeps Brockville Cardiovascular Program going “It is because of the BCP I have my life back,” is a common statement made by many of the 800 graduates of Brockville General Hospital’s Cardiovascular Program. The program is better known as “the BCP” (Brockville Cardiovascular Program). The BCP came about due to a great need for this rehabilitation service identified by clinicians to assist Brockville and area citizens recovering from cardiac-related surgeries or heart health issues. In 2009, the BCP become a reality through the funding support from the National Fire & Life Safety, the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation and many generous community donors, businesses and community organizations. This customized program varies in length from 4-12 weeks. Qualifying participants will experience a supervised exercise program in conjunction with educational sessions on modifiable risk factors that may include; obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and alcohol consumption. Patient testimonial: “Thanks to the help and encouragement from the

wonderful staff at Brockville Cardiovascular rehabilitation I, and many others, can lead an active life. At 87 years of age I live alone, drive, shop, etc., as do many others. How lucky we are to have this program here in Brockville. Otherwise, I would have had to travel to Ottawa or Kingston.” Regrettably, the BCP does not re-

ceive any government funding and costs $181,000 annually to run, and relies solely on donations and community supporters. Community support by groups such as the Heart & Solstice Planning Committee has been essential in raising funds for the BCP. Over the last eight years, this group has helped to

raise $190,430 for this program. This year’s signature event will be taking place on Thursday, June 22 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The festivities will take place at the beautiful home of Janet Eaton and Ray Wheeler. This elegant residence will be the backdrop for an evening of classical guitar music, provided by

Tony Komeri, fine wine and delicious appetizers, generously donated by area restaurateurs, all in support of the Brockville Cardiovascular Program). Tickets are $75 per person and can be purchased at the end of May at either Scotiabank Brockville location. Submitted by BDHF.

CMHC generates $1.4 billion in net income in 2016: annual report Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has released its 2016 annual report titled “Innovating for Better Housing Outcomes." The report captures how CMHC, as Canada’s authority on housing, contributes to the stability of the housing market and financial system while providing support for Canadians in housing need.

In 2016, CMHC supported over 500,000 Canadian households through long-term social housing commitments and provided mortgage loan insurance for more than 350,000 homes, according to a release issued on May 9. CMHC’s mortgage loan insurance and securitization activities operate on a commercial basis without the need for funding from the government. As a

result of these activities, CMHC generated a net income of $1.4 billion for the year ended Dec. 31. At year end, total mortgage insurance capital available was $18.6 billion. On the continued strength of performance, CMHC will be implementing a dividend framework and will begin paying a dividend to the Government of Canada in 2017. "In 2016, CMHC truly re-emerged

as Canada’s authority on housing," stated Evan Siddall, CMHC president and CEO. "We significantly increased our support for Canadians in housing need through renewed investments in affordable housing; we led a national consultation to inform Canada’ first National Housing Strategy all while supporting Canadian’s access to housing finance through our ongoing mortgage loan

insurance and securitization activities.” In addition to the $2 billion the government already invests in housing each year, CMHC was entrusted with delivering more than $4 billion in new investments in 2016 to improve access to affordable housing. The report is available at www. cmhc.ca/annualreport or by calling 1-800-668-2642.
