The podcast will serve as a means for us to strengthen our community while educating, motivating, and inspiring our employees while they are hard at work from wherever they may be in our nation. You will get a look into our safety and operations departments, and the ways that they strive to help our drivers succeed. NEXT YEAR IS LOOKING BRIGHT FOR TRUCKERS! STORY BY REESE ROBERTS

According to The American Trucking Associations 2022 Outlook Report, next years is looking bright for truckers!

The primary insight in the ATA’s report predicts that the United States will see a 24 percent increase in freight tonnage in 2022, producing a 66 percent increase in revenue for the industry. The bulk of that increase for next year, and the next decade, is occurring in the trucking segment. The report details the expectation that trucking will see an increase of 67 percent in tonnage with a corresponding increase of 82.2 percent in revenues. The summary impact of these changes will see the 2022 freight landscape dominated by the 70 percent share of freight transport conducted by trucks with drivers! This growth drives the demand for more reliance on commercial trucking and driving for the final distribution-to-the-end-user solution.

As the vital role of trucking gains more visibility, it is impacting the demand for infrastructure investment in roads and bridges, new technologies to aid commercial drivers and safety, and new pressures to raise rates and compensation for commercial truckers. The time is now, professional drivers are needed now more than ever!

Trucking will see an increase of 67% in tonnage with a corresponding increase of 82.2 percent in revenues.

2021 TCA HIGHWAY ANGEL Royford Burris STORY BY REESE ROBERTS

T

he Truckload Carriers Association named their “Highway Angel of the Year” at the association’s annual Truckload 2021 conference recently in Las Vegas. Of the 75 Highway Angels selected in for the 2020 calendar year, Stevens Transport driver Royford Burris was recognized as the Highway Angel of the Year for his heroism as the first on the scene of a fiery crash.

Royford, a Stevens Transport driver since 2018, was traveling on U.S. Highway 63 in Arkansas and was running a day early on his load to Orlando, Florida, when he saw two cars in the middle of the road, one minutes away from going up in flames. “I had just told my wife that things were going well, and the road was so calm when I rolled up on the accident,” Royford recalled. “Once I saw the cars, I knew that it was my duty to help in any way I could.”

As he approached the scene, Royford safely pulled over and turned on his flashers. A pickup pulled up at the same time. “We were the first ones on the scene,” said Burris. “We grabbed our fire extinguishers and ran to the red car.” After they extinguished the flames, Burris and the motorist discovered the driver’s body lying about 20 feet away. “It was horrible,” he said. Other cars were beginning to approach the scene. “I didn’t want anyone else to see that.” He ran back to his truck and grabbed a towel to cover the body.

Burris and the other driver then rushed to the van which was badly mangled. The woman in the driver’s seat was deceased. Burris carefully lifted her out of the vehicle. EMTs had arrived and put her on a stretcher. The only survivor was a girl who appeared

to be 13 or 14 years old. She was trapped in the front passenger seat.

“She was crying and in pain,” said Burris. “She said she couldn’t breathe.

I said, ‘Look at me, I’m not going to let you die, I promise.’” Burris quickly kicked out the back door and climbed in to retrieve her. “I was trying to break the seat apart. I ripped the seatbelt out. I don’t know where I got the strength,” he said. Burris struggled to free her and was finally able to extract her through the window and handed her to the officer, saving her life.

Since 1997, TCA’s Highway Angel program has recognized professional truck drivers who have selflessly helped others while on the job. From each year’s recipients, only one is selected as Highway Angel of the Year because he or she best embodies the spirit of the program. It is a great honor that Royford received this award, and we are extremely thankful to have him as a member of our driving force. Royford sets the standards not only for his fellow drivers but for all of us at Stevens as well.

W

e are very proud to announce that Stevens Transport Driver and United States Army Veteran Jimmy Reddell has been named the winner of the 2021Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence Award!

The "Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence" award campaign, first launched in the spring of 2016, is part of an overall effort to inspire the hiring of more veterans, national guard members, and reservists into the trucking industry. As the main part of the initiative, deserving veteran drivers who have made a successful transition from military service to the trucking industry were nominated by their carriers for the chance to win a fully loaded Kenworth T680 truck to accelerate their newfound careers.

Jimmy, a native of Little Rock, AR, knew from a young age he wanted to serve his country.

Shortly after his 17th birthday, a conversation he had with an Army recruiter would “shape his future”. Impressed with what his recruiter had to offer; Jimmy soon enlisted in the Army for what would be a 22-year long career.

Jimmy was assigned to a variety of mission critical positions and was deployed to South Korea where he served as an 88M transporting Patriot Missile Radar Systems. “The job required me to drive across mountain passes and roads that weren’t designed for heavy trucks, so I picked up valuable driving experience with the Army that is helpful today”, said Reddell. Prior to his retirement, Jimmie played a key role in the Hurricane Katrina rescue and cleanup missions. “It was hard to see the destruction

Hurricane Katrina caused and how many people were displaced from their homes. When I arrived, I joined a team that distributed food, water, and other essential goods to those in need. It was the most rewarding experience of my career.” said Jimmy. In his final assignment, Jimmie’s career came full cycle when he retired as an Army recruiter helping the men and women of our country answer their own call to serve.

Jimmy plans to use the new Kenworth T680 to start his own fleet, and one day hopefully add more trucks to it. As an owner operator, Jimmy’s career in trucking has rapidly stepped forward and this great award will give Jimmy all the tools necessary to maximize his earning potential. Stevens Transport is extremely thankful to have Jimmy as a member of our premier driving force. Jimmy is pleased to continue his service to our country, by delivering essential good across our great nation, now behind the wheel of his very own truck.

KIRK SMITH Congratulations to Kirk Smith, a secondgeneration Stevens Transport driver, who recently passed the two-million-mile mark!

He obtained his CDL from Stevens Driving Academy. Kirk passed the incredible milestone, but he is determined to catch his father Owen, who has driven over four million miles with us! Kirk grew up around the industry, learning the job from his father and falling in love with it. Kirk enjoys spending his free time with his family, but states that his favorite place to be is behind the wheel of his truck.

JOHNNY BOOKLET JR. Johnny Booklet Jr. has joined the Million Mile Club! Johnny, a graduate of Careers World Wide CDL School, joined the Stevens Transport in 2013 after spending over a decade serving in the United States Army.

Meet Our New Driver Retention Specialist,

HERBERT FLOYD! STORY BY REESE ROBERTS

Herbert Floyd has been around the sun when it comes to his time as a member of the Stevens Transport family. Herbert enrolled in the Stevens Transport Driving Academy in 1999 and over the next two decades he spent time as a company driver, a contractor, and an owner operator that built a small fleet of trucks with Stevens. Herbert has accomplished feats with Stevens Transport that only a few drivers in the whole trucking industry are able to accomplish. With nearly four million miles and ten Driver of the Month awards under his belt, there is no one better suited to be the voice of the driver inside our office. Herbert knows all the ups and downs of being a driver, and he is able to easily put himself in the shoes of our drivers, because he has been in them before.

Herbert made the decision this year to come off the road after 20 years, settle down in Dallas, and join our operations team as Driver Retention Specialist with one goal: helping our drivers. In his new role, Herbert plays a very vital role in assisting our drivers with the things those non-drivers are not always able to understand. “Being able to come into this office and help our drivers each and every day excites

me the moment that I get out of bed,” said Herbert.

Herbert knows that although we have a very wise operations staff, sometimes there are situations that only a driver will truly understand, and that is where Herbert steps in.

Herbert is an extremely valuable resource to our driving force, and the Stevens Transport family.

We are very thankful for Herbert and all that he has done for our driving force.

Chris is eager to hit the ground running and become a key player in our operations department.
