COVERING COVID-19 THE RIGHT WAY!

he Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has committed to distributing one million face masks across the country to protect truck drivers on the front lines from the COVID-19 virus. Provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), 800,000 masks will be distributed across eight states*, and an additional 200,000 masks will be given to directly to motor carriers to give to their drivers.

“The Department of Transportation has been supporting America’s truckers during this challenging time,” FMCSA Acting Administrator Jim Mullen said. “We have all seen the incredible efforts that the nation’s commercial drivers are making each day to deliver goods and supplies to homes, businesses, and hospitals throughout America. These protective masks will help truckers remain safe and healthy while they continue to maintain our nation’s supply chain.”

“I am so pleased to honor America’s heroes: our country’s truck drivers and trucking industry,” Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said. “Without you, it would be impossible to keep our economy moving and get food, medical equipment, and essential supplies to where they need to be. At the President’s direction, we have reached out to the trucking industry on an unprecedented basis and are providing regulatory relief.

Truckers are playing a heroic role in helping America cope during this crisis, and truckers will be a critical part in helping our economy recover once this crisis is past us; they are truly America’s heroes.”

As an industry leader, Stevens Transport sent representatives to ten strategic locations across the United States for seven days to provide 20,000 units of personal protective equipment (PPE) to

their driver force. In cases where drivers were unable to collect their PPE, additional units will be available at the company’s Dallas, TX headquarters and at the Laredo drop yard.

“Stevens is proud of our heroes on the road,” Vice President of Driver Relations and Administration Angela Horowitz said. “We have taken steps to ensure that all drivers have the necessary PPE gear that is required to shield themselves from this disease. We are proud of our heroes on the road and thank them for the daily sacrifices they are making to keep America moving, especially during these challenging times.”

Stevens driver Gregory Smith was eager to facilitate and assist his fellow drivers at the pick-up station in Ontario, CA. “I was able to meet with over 100 drivers and hear their different stories about how this pandemic is affecting them, both on the road and at home. It was very self-enriching, and I would not hesitate to do it again!”

This initiative is one of many safety measures in place. For internal associates, Stevens continues to practice social distancing as more employees return to the office. To accommodate the phased addition of foot traffic, physical barriers, visitor questionnaires, and enhanced sanitation protocols have been added.

OWEN SMITH

THREE MILLION MILES & RUNNING

wen Smith recently reached a milestone just one percent of OTR drivers experience – three million accident-free miles. “I genuinely love what I do on a daily basis,” Owen stated. “I’ve always said that I’m doing this for my family, and over the years, my family has grown to encompass everyone at Stevens.

I am very thankful for the opportunity to not only pursue a career I enjoy on a daily basis, but also to be surrounded by such a supportive team!”

Owen graduated with a CDL from Stevens Driving Academy soon after moving to the United States from Jamaica in 1996. “My first day solo in the truck was a memorable one,” Owen recalled. “This profession was one that was unlike any other. Because of the awesome training that I received, I felt well-prepared to explore everything that the open road offered to me!”

As his career took off, he jumped at the chance to become an Owner-Operator and a Trainer for the Contractor Division.

“Purchasing a truck was a huge commitment, so I wanted to ensure that I was able to learn as much as I could about the business and the profession. Once I acquired my first truck, a 2000 Freightliner Classic, I knew that I wanted to pass along my knowledge to others, and trained many successful students!”

[Horowitz]. She is truly committed to helping the drivers in any way possible, and has shown that since my first day with Stevens!”

Vice President of Driver Relations Angela Horowitz spoke highly about Owen and all he has accomplished while at Stevens.

“Owen is an incredibly smart, hardworking, determined, passionate, and goaloriented person who came to the United States and built a successful career as a professional driver and business owner. As a knowledgeable Owner-Operator, Owen has developed a very profitable and successful small business, and is a true testament to the American dream. We are very blessed to have Owen as a member of our Contractor Division!”

With 23 years over the road under his belt, he wanted to pass along some advice for new drivers: “Make sure to absorb everything that you can about your new profession, as there are new things to learn every day. Also, keep patience at the forefront, because great rewards will come in time!”

When Owen is not driving across the country, he spends his time with his children and cooking new dishes.

Owen has since grown his fleet to five trucks. He has also been able to purchase multiple homes and put six children through college! “I would not have been able to achieve all of this without the encouragement and collaboration from everyone at Stevens, especially Angela

tevens Transport driver Richard Carpenter has seen the effects of the COVID-19 crisis in the supply chain and logistics industry first-hand. “This time has been an interesting one for all of us,” Richard said. “I’m speaking for all of the drivers out here that we are working long and hard to ensure that the grocery stores shelves stay stocked. It’s our part to assist with everything that is going on; it’s essentially our time to shine!”

According to the American Transportation Research Institute, March and April have shown an unprecedented level of truck movement in response to the demands placed on the industry.

Stevens Kraft Dedicated driver Niketya Matthews explained the immediate changes she felt while over the road. “Everything happened so fast. It seemed like one day everything was fine, and the next, half of the country was shut down. It’s been it a bit challenging with restaurants being subjected to drive-thru only, having rest stops restrict showers and restrooms, and experiencing grocery store shelves be empty by the time we are able to stop.”

Stevens Perdue Dedicated driver Adam Hickman described the sacrifices he had to make on a recent trip home. “It was nice to be able to spend some time at home, but I still had to selfquarantine in my truck. My dad recently underwent quintuple bypass surgery, and the rest of my family has pre-existing medical conditions. We wanted to take all of the precautions that we could to ensure a smooth home-time trip.”

In the midst of unprecedented chaos, drivers are experiencing a silver lining from community members and corporations in gratitude for their service. “A family was passing out free bags of lunch to us at a truck stop in Gulfport, Mississippi,” Stevens Independent Contractor Nicole Weidner said. “My trainee and I tried offering them money, but they declined, stating it was the least they could do for us. The Department of Transportations across the 48 states that I travel through are posting digital signs thanking truckers for everything we're doing, which is nice to come across.”

Stevens Owner-Operator James Hodge praised the accommodations that many fast-food establishments with closed dining rooms created specifically for drivers. “I was at a Popeyes in California, and after explaining that I couldn’t fit my truck through the drive-thru, they came out with a tablet and took my order. At another spot, someone in the drive-thru line offered to buy my meal. It’s also awesome to hear these thanks from the entire staff at these places, because we are both working hard to supply essential goods to everyone during this time!”

Stevens Team drivers Hayley and Marc Norris echoed similar sentiments as their fellow fleet members. “You never really realize what you have until it’s not there anymore. We’ve experienced this heavily during this pandemic. Hopefully, the recognition that we are receiving now will help shift the perspective that the rest of the world has on both the profession and the industry as a whole.”

#MEETSTEVENS Frank Argueta Perdue Dedicated Operations Frank joined Stevens in November of 2018. He is recognized for his innovative problem-solving skills and effective communication with both his peers and drivers. One of Frank’s favorite parts of his job is the variety of challenges that he tackles on a daily basis. When we asked Frank what he attributes to his success, he explained: “I take pride in doing a job well done and have a goal to grow in the company.” Frank also passed along some sound advice for our new associates: “First, welcome to the family! Stevens is the place where you will be able to teach as well as learn and grow in this industry. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and take many notes while you are in training!” Outside of work, Frank enjoys going on road trips, watching baseball, and reading.

Heather Hansen Brokerage Pacific Northwest Office Manager Heather joined Stevens in April of 2015. She is recognized for her hard work, determination, and creative ways to grow and improve. One of Heather’s favorite parts of her job is the family atmosphere that she encounters every day in her office. When we asked Heather what she attributes to her success, she said: “I want to put the best version of myself into my work every day. I make it my personal goal to meet and supersede the expectations daily for both myself and my office.” Heather also passed along some sound advice for our new associates: “Don’t wait for the success to come. It’s mandatory that you apply yourself in all of your tasks. Think critically, don’t be afraid to reset yourself, and think outside of the norm.” Outside of work, Heather enjoys boxing, gardening, going to the movies and concerts, and spending time with her two children.

Tim Simmons Alliance Shop Mechanic Tim joined Stevens in June of 2014. He is recognized for his professionalism and willingness to help in any situation, no matter the circumstances. One of Tim’s favorite parts of his job is being a part of such a reputable company! When we asked Tim what he attributes to his success, he stated: “I have been in my profession for over 35 years, and I still love what I do on a daily basis! I always make sure to improve my skills every day, and work to put better and safer trucks on the road!” Tim also passed along some sound advice to our new associates: “Make sure to show up every day on time and prepared to work, and make sure to learn everything you can, because there is something new to learn all the time!” Outside of work, Tim enjoys dirt track racing and spending time with his wife and two children.

#MEETSTEVENS Juan Monsivais Trailer Shop Technician Juan joined Stevens in April of 2000. He is recognized for his 20 years of hard work and dedication to improving Stevens’ trailers to be the best on the road! When we asked Juan what he attributes to his success, he responded: “They say that if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life. I really enjoy my position, and my co-workers and peers make the days more enjoyable than the last!” Juan also passed along some sound advice for our new associates: “Make an effort to improve every day, because with improvement comes more responsibility. Also, make sure to ask as many questions as you can, because your team wants to see you succeed!”

Outside of work, Juan enjoys spending time with his family.

Chris Holt Plains Planner Chris joined Stevens in September of 2017. He is recognized for his problem-solving skills and consistent teamwork mentality. One of Chris’s favorite parts of his job is the constant variety of changes that he encounters on a daily basis. When we asked Chris what he attributes to his success, he explained: “I value my hard work ethic and pride myself in every task that I complete. Receiving recognition from my peers helps me complete every day satisfactorily!” Chris also passed along some sound advice for our new associates: “New challenges will arise in your position every day. Make sure to work toward improvements every day!” Outside of work, Chris enjoys pursuing outdoor activities and spending time at his family ranch with his fiance.

John Lane Fleet Safety Manager John joined Stevens in August of 2015. He is recognized for his tireless work ethic and assistance that he provides to all on his fleet. One of John’s favorite parts of his job is having the ability to provide a direct influence and impact on the safety habits of Stevens’ newest drivers. When we asked John what he attributes to his success, he stated: “I always make sure to put the safety and well-being of our driving force at the forefront. I know I have achieved success when I meet a driver who I helped, and they thank me for being there for them when they needed it the most.” John also passed along some sound advice to our new associates: “No matter your position, always remember the impact we have in training and setting the standard for a safe environment to operate in. Stevens Transport extends their deepest thank-yous to our Southeast Field Recruiter of 14 years, Jim Potter, who retired on May 8, 2020. Jim was recognized for his outstanding leadership and professionalism through a virtual celebration. Throughout his time at Stevens, Jim greatly enhanced the lives of both his co-workers and professional drivers that he recruited, and established a legacy in the industry.

Field Recruiting Manager Jeff Mackey spoke highly of Jim and his accomplishments.

“Jim was an anchor for the entire Recruiting department. He was always the first to assist in any situation, and passed along his wisdom and teachings about the industry to his new colleagues.

We are grateful for his many years of service, and he will be greatly missed!”
