Stevens Supplies During COVID-19 Crisis

T

he rapid spread of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has sparked alarm worldwide. With origins in China, the illness is a respiratory virus that has upended global markets, including supply chains. According to guidance from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), transportation employees are considered “essential critical infrastructure workers.”

“Stevens Transport is constantly monitoring new developments throughout the United States concerning the spread of COVID-19 and its impact,” President Clay Aaron said. “We have contingency plans at the corporate and departmental level to ensure we are able to maintain business operations during this situation. Our business continuity plan allows its employees to work remotely and provide seamless operational support to ensure uninterrupted service to its customers.”

Stevens has also implemented mandatory health and safety procedures as part of its proactive approach to prevent the spread of germs and any potential outbreak of COVID-19, including nightly deep cleanings of the entire facility and hotel, distributing educational materials to all employees, contractors, vendors, and CDL schools and training partners, as well as limiting the admission of visitors onto the property.

While some Operations employees may work remotely, many of Stevens’ drivers are still on the road, risking their personal health and doing the hard work to keep products moving to stores, hospitals and elsewhere.

“Professional drivers nationwide are stepping up to ensure our food and medical supplies get delivered to all in need,” Vice President of Driver Relations Angela Horowitz said. “I’m so proud and thankful for the dedication and hard work from our driving force to this mission in serving our country in the midst of difficult times. We are sending daily Qualcomm messages to keep our drivers up to date with the latest information that we have from the CDC regarding best practices and updates from our shippers and receivers. We are here for them, behind them, and working right next to them to ensure their continued success.”

Stevens Contractor Thomas Cochran shared his experience of being a driver during this time. ‘With all of the industries that are being shut down, we are so lucky to be a part of an industry that will not follow suit because it is both indestructible and vital. I believe that I speak for every driver when I say that I feel especially lucky to be with a company with an abundance of freight that will help me still earn a paycheck.”

To help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases like COVID-19, the CDC recommends to avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue, and then discarding it into the trash. Fleet Fades to

All-Automatic T he days of manual transmissions are numbered.

Recently, Stevens Transport upgraded its 2,000-truck fleet to fully automatic, as computerized shifting becomes industry standard.

“Stevens Transport has invested millions of dollars into upgrading their fleet and are continuing to purchase more this year,” Equipment Sales Manager Chris Brinkley said. “The continual upgrading of the fleet has not only decreased a driver’s downtime for repairs, but has also helped maintain the positive experience that our driver force already encounters at Stevens.”

Fuel Department Manager Mike Mistishen gave an insight into the advantages that an all-automatic fleet offers. “Before this switch, Stevens had an MPG average of 6.65-6.7. With the automatics, Stevens now boasts a 7.2 company MPG average. This increase is in part to the computerized shifting that the automatics are equipped with. The computers controlling automated transmissions can “down-speed” — lower the revolutions per minute of the engine at high speed — effectively and are proving to better control gas consumption and emissions.”

Four of Stevens’ contract training schools have also implemented all-automatic trucks, including Stevens Driving Academy in Dallas, TX, Lonestar Community College in Houston, TX, Georgia Driving Academy in Columbus, GA, and both Diesel Driving Academy locations in Shreveport, LA and Little Rock, AR.

Director of CDL Training Andrew Wilke spoke highly about how influential this transition is proving to be.

“The implementation of these trucks has proven very successful in our training centers. These trucks have not only cut a student’s training time in half, but also has attracted more individuals who otherwise would be intimidated to drive a truck. We have also seen a higher pass rate for all of our students in all of our schools, which helps more of these students secure their job in this industry at Stevens!”

Third-Party CDL Skills Examiner John Haffner explained the positive aspects of testing students in the new trucks.

“Being a Third-Party CDL Skills Examiner, I am able to administer the driving skills for Class A, B, and C CDL applicants. The automatic trucks have helped students master skills that they weren’t able to before, including all turns and lane controls. The trucks have been exciting the students, which have boosts their morale about joining such a reputable company.”

The Ease Of Ownership

t the beginning of his driving career, Jack Rehmel set two professional goals for himself: build his own personal business and purchase a truck. With assistance from Stevens, Jack achieved both of those goals in two years. “I chose Stevens because I knew they would help me make all of my goals possible. I now have the opportunity to purchase multiple trucks and build my own fleet within Stevens! I am very fortunate and excited to grow my goal with a well-known and respected carrier, and cannot wait to see where else this adventure will take me!”

Jack is taking part in one of the multiple truck purchasing programs that Stevens Transport offers their drivers, the Lease Purchase Program. Offered

by Stevens Transport CD, Inc., drivers have the opportunity to purchase a new truck valued at $150,000 with zero miles and no credit check. Since inception, over 100 drivers have joined the program, and multiple sign up daily!

“Stevens offers their drivers the best and most affordable programs to help them achieve their goals of owning a new truck and becoming an OwnerOperator in this industry,” Contractor Division Business Recruiter Will Byrd said. “In order for a driver to qualify for our Lease Purchase Program, they must be an Independent Contractor for at least one year, and only need a small down payment of $4,000 to secure the keys to their brandnew truck!”

Will also explained how easy it is for a contractor to make their down payment. “All contractors receive a Lease Completion Bonus check at the completion of their lease. This bonus will give everyone more than enough to cover their down payment. This means that a contractor will have

Paragon Leasing, Inc., the maintenance and body shop that maintains the trucks and trailers of Stevens Transport at the highest standards, is excited to announce the new changes that have taken place!

To begin, the parts department underwent a complete renovation that was unveiled at the end of this month. The renovation included new flooring, a fresh coat of paint, new counter tops, and new shelving units. Service Manager Audie Delgado hopes that the new renovations will make the department a pleasant place for both associates and drivers to visit.

“We are excited for these renovations to be put in place,” Audie said. “We are not only hoping for this space to be a pleasant place for others to visit, but for our team to produce better service because they will enjoy coming to their office every day.”

Second, all of the equipment fleet managers and assistants can now be found at the shop on the hill. “We wanted to make sure that we had a one-stop-shop for all of the needs of this department,” Audie said. “This move also helped create more room for our growing truck shop service team, which will be able to assist all of our driver force service needs.” virtually no out-of-pocket costs, and has three to five years to pay off their truck. For example, if a driver does a four-year lease purchase term, he or she will have a truck payment in the 600s, plus insurance and accessories.”

Drivers also have the option to purchase a used truck for 10% down, and two to three years to pay for it, allowing drivers to obtain the key to their own truck sooner!

“It makes me happy when I sell a truck to one of our stellar drivers,” Equipment Sales Manager Chris Brinkley said. “We are in the business of making dreams come true, and knowing that I am able to be a part is awesome!”

Stevens driver Darlene Arbolante recently achieved her goal of purchasing a truck from Chris, and is excited to train her students in her own truck.

“I was able to purchase a 2017 Peterbilt 579, and could not have done it without the support and guidance from everyone at Stevens. My students have also seen the amount of success that I have acquired at Stevens, and are inspired to continue in their journey so they too can achieve success!”

#MEETSTEVENS Raven Kuehn Customer Service Representative Raven joined Stevens in February of 2014. She is recognized for her hard work, dedication, and willingness to go above and beyond requests and expectations.

One of Raven’s favorite parts of her job is teaching the graduate drivers about the many produce loading procedures. When we asked Raven what motivates her to her continued success, she stated: “I want to do the very best job that I can!

I always encourage my co-workers and managers to pass along any feedback they have, so I can grow in my position and help accomplish the Stevens mission every day.” Raven also passed along some sound advice to our new associates: “Make sure to take any and all notes that you can. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions, because everyone here wants to help you succeed!” Outside of work, Raven enjoys reading and spending time wither her husband and three children.

Lisa Lantz Freight Broker - Greenville Lisa joined Stevens in June of 2018. She is recognized for her perseverance, dedication and can-do attitude on a daily basis. One of Lisa’s favorite parts of her job is having the opportunity to connect with wonderful people across the United States. When we asked Lisa what motivates her to her continued success, she said: “Success is what motivates me to do a good job. Knowing that my hard work and perseverance will help me achieve greater professional success keeps me going every day.” Lisa also passed along some sound advice for our new associates: “Take in all the advice, help and knowledge that you can from your peers.

Also, don’t be afraid to ask too many questions, because there is something new to learn every day!” Outside of work, Lisa enjoys reading, crafting, and cooking.

Juan Villanueva Trailer Shop Leadman Juan joined Paragon Leasing in January of 2015. He is recognized for his strong work ethic and professionalism toward both his co-workers and our driver force. One of Juan’s favorite parts of his job is working on trailers and Thermo-King units at one of the most respected carriers in the country. When we asked Juan what he attributes to his success, he explained: “I do what I do every day to help support my family and grandchildren. I know I have reached success when my managers or supervisors allow me to take on more responsibilities.” Juan also passed along some sound advice for our new associates: “Be like a sponge. Soak up as much information that you can, and be responsible for all of your duties.” Outside of work, Juan enjoys watching his daughters play college soccer,and spend time with his wife, four children, and three grandchildren.

One of Kenny’s favorite parts of his job is the ability to multitask on many projects, ranging from desk work to running errands. We asked Kenny what he attributes to his success, he replied: “I know I have reached success when I can look back every day and know without a doubt that I have done my best and accomplished all of the tasks that were assigned to me. I also recognize that my small contributions help accomplish the Stevens mission on a daily basis, and having that feeling every day pushes me to do my best!” Kenny passed along some sound advice for new associates: “Be focused on completing your goals daily. Also, be flexible to lend a helping hand wherever you can.” Outside of work, Kenny enjoys hiking, video games, and spending time with his family.

Charmaine Edwards Graduate Yard Coordinator Charmaine joined Stevens in September of 2000. She is recognized for her for her great attitude and excellent quality work. One of Charmaine’s favorite parts of her job is having the opportunity to help both her co-workers and the Stevens driver force. When we asked Charmaine what she attributes to her success, she responded: “My success comes from seeing those who I have helped succeed daily. Upon seeing that, I know that I have helped complete the Stevens mission in a small way.” Charmaine also passed along some sound advice for our new associates: “Be open to submersing yourself in every aspect of the business that you can. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions, as you will be learning something new every day.” Outside of work, Charmaine enjoys shopping, interior decorating, and spending time with her family and friends.

Brad Turner Driver Manager Operations Lead Brad joined Stevens in January of 2014. He is recognized for his consistent hard work and dedication to both his team of Driver Managers and the driver force. One of Brad’s favorite parts of his job is having the opportunity to make lasting connections with our driver force and solving problems when needed. When we asked Brad what motivates him to his continued success, he responded: “Our number one goal is to ensure that our drivers are taken care of. Our drivers are like my second family, so I will do whatever is needed to help them reach their goals.” Brad also passed along some sound advice for our new hires: “Make sure that you keep constant communication with your managers and co-workers.

Success takes a team, and your team wants to see you succeed!” Outside of work, Brad enjoys riding and working on his Harley motorcycle, and spending time with his wife and dog.

Alberto joined Stevens in April of 2002 and currently is the Director of Mexico Operators. Alberto oversees all of the inbound and outbound loads to our Mexico office, as well as works to see the successful delivery of all loads to Mexico and Canada. Alberto interacts with many of Stevens’ customers on a daily basis, and recently received this awesome letter of recognition from Driscoll’s Berries: “At the end of the day, it comes down to the people we work with. Beto is exceptional, and between him and Jason [Dinwiddie], they are doing a great job building our trust on the Operations side. Even if Beto didn’t get this trailer for tomorrow, he still was ahead of it with us. Together, we had plans B and C ready to go so our customers would not be impacted. It is such a different experience than what we have had in the past and definitely what we need to continue. A big Thank You to Beto and Stevens!”
