A Ride to Remember Stevens Driver David Talley Recaps his “Run for the Wall” Experience

For the past 15 years, Stevens Transport Driver David Talley has participated in the annual “Run for the Wall” motorcycle ride across America. This event, now in its 31st year, recognizes the sacrifices and contributions made by all veterans who have served our nation. The 10-day ride starts in Ontario, California and ends up at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Each year, David provides his family, friends and Stevens Transport family with updates about his journey. We look forward to hearing about his adventures each year and are happy to share them with you.

Here are some excerpts from David’s journey: Part 1: David is on his way to California to take part in the 31st annual Run for the Wall event and is grateful to have been able to participate for his 15th consecutive year since 2005. He notes this incredibly meaningful journey would not have been possible without having the blessing of Angela Horowitz, Vice President of Driver Relations and Administration, and Smokey Adams, Vice President of Operations, and the support of so many others at Stevens Transport.

This year’s ride is extra special to David as his 14-year-old grandson, Jake, is participating with him. David’s wife will also be joining him on his motorcycle for portions of the journey.

David is riding in support of all the men and women who have enlisted and served in the military since 2001. “Every single man and woman who serve our country are volunteers, whether it is in a time of war or not. They deserve America’s respect.” That’s all for now.

Part 2: Since his last email, David has completed the central route, traveling from California to Arizona to New Mexico and into Kansas. So far, more than 700 participants have joined the ride. Always one to stop and help others, David pulled over to assist another rider in Arizona. As a result, David and his bike rolled down an embankment.

Luckily, David was not hurt, and there was no real damage to his bike—just a broken reflector.

In New Mexico, the riders were accompanied by a full presidential-style escort by the New Mexico State Police, the City of Albuquerque and the Town of Santa Fe. In addition, the City of Albuquerque shut down I-40 and I-25 in both directions so the riders could transition safely to their next destination. looks forward to escorting them every year! Another amazing aspect of the Run for the Wall is that each route raises money for different charities. David’s route is raising money for children in the Rainelle Medical Center in West Virginia. So far, they have raised about $3000! David says he will send more updates once the Run for the Wall is complete!

Part 3: It’s David’s final check in! He made it to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. David shared that this year’s Run for the Wall was a great experience. His grandson learned a lot during the event and had the opportunity to meet and become friends with some of David’s friends.

Jake earned the nickname “Gopher” because he helped David’s friend, Ken, check his gopher traps before the ride. Jake enjoyed hearing his nickname come across the CB radio, and he even helped some riders find their way back to the route during a mishap at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

Once they reached Washington, D.C., a group photo was taken at the Lincoln Memorial. The group of 1800 participants filled all of the steps and even extended out 40 feet out below the steps in front of the Lincoln Memorial. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial visit was very moving for all of the riders. Many tears were shed. Gifts were left at the Memorial, and some of the riders made rubbings of names on the wall for friends.

After they reached the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in D.C., some of the riders embarked on another three-day ride known as the “Wall 2 Wall Sandbox Route” that goes back west to Marseilles, IL. There is a memorial in Marseilles for fallen heroes of the war against terror known as the “Sandbox Wall.” David shared that next year, he may sign up for that extra leg of the journey as it heads back in the direction of home.

“I am deeply grateful to Stevens Transport for letting me participate in this trip, and I thank everyone who followed me on my journey through my emails. According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, “These programs allow veterans to learn a trade or skill through on-the-job training vs. attending formal classroom instruction.” This program allows drivers that are transitioning out of the military to make up to an additional $21,000 above their salary by drawing from their post GI Bill Education Fund.

Government Initiatives Help Pave the Way

The first program, the Military Skills Test Waiver Program, allows drivers with two years of experience safely operating heavy military vehicles to obtain their CDL without requiring them to take the road portion of the test. To date, more than 26,000 service members and veterans have taken advantage of this waiver program.

Many military personnel also transition to a career in the supply chain industry after their service ends. There are many transferable skills, including: adaptability, loyalty, integrity and accountability.

“I am a Transport Officer in the United States Army, and I believe that role has tremendously prepared me for my role here at Stevens,” said Driver Manager Garrett Baeder. “In the military, I am responsible The second program, the Even Exchange Program or Knowledge for managing a platoon of 60 soldiers. Vice President of Operations Smokey Adams attributes his success in his current role to the skills he obtained in the military. “The military teaches you basic skills, such as how to work as a team and how to communicate with others. With those basic skills, I was able to learn my positions quicker. They essentially gave me a leg up compared to others. I can honestly say without the training I received from the military, I would not be where I am today.”

Stevens Driver Helps Save Lives

Truck drivers are constantly navigating through potentially dangerous driving situations on a daily basis. Sometimes they are unexpectedly thrown into situations that are a matter of life and death.

One such incident happened on December 26, 2018, when Stevens driver James McCallum thought he was stuck in normal rush hour traffic in Riverside, California. It wasn’t until a Department of Transportation (DOT) police officer approached his truck that he knew something serious was happening.

On the overpass ahead, multiple police officers, paramedics, and firefighters had gathered to dissuade a young adult female from attempting suicide by jumping off of the bridge. The DOT officer asked James to park his truck next to about 10-15 other trucks to help create a blockade on both sides of the bridge. This blockade, according to James, would have prevented the woman from sustaining major injuries if she jumped.

“I sympathized with the woman because she believed that she had no one to turn to for help,” James stated. “But everyone assisting in the situation really wanted to help her in any way they could.”

Finally, after three hours, the woman allowed rescuers to talk her down.

After she was safely off the overpass, James drove to the nearest safe spot to pull over and called Stevens headquarters to explain the rescue effort he had just been a part of. James was thankful the woman accepted the help of those involved.

“Being in the military for 28 years and going through multiple deployments, you realize how valuable each individual life is,” said James. “This event reminded me of the importance of telling everyone I care about how much they mean to me. Another lesson was to treat everyone you encounter like family, because you never know what they may be going through.”

Stevens driver Demetrius Reeves also demonstrated incredible quick thinking and judgment recently in Pompano Beach, FL. When his trainee became unresponsive at the wheel, Demetrius took swift action under pressure and saved both his own life and his trainee’s life as well.

#MEETSTEVENS Ashlynn McCullough Central Clearance Counter Clerk Ashlynn joined Stevens in March of this year. She is recognized for her hard work and contributions to both her co-workers and the drivers. One of Ashlynn’s favorite parts of her job is the compassionate and welcoming atmosphere that Stevens offers to her every day. When we asked Ashlynn about what motivates her toward her continued success, she said: “My family is the reason for my success. There has been a lot to learn, but my family is right by my side encouraging me daily, and that pushes me to do my best.” Ashlynn also shared some helpful advice for new employees: “Always put your best foot forward and make every day better than the last.” Outside of work, Ashlynn enjoys shopping, taking her dogs to the dog park, and spending time with her family.

Dorisa Villarreal Central Clearance Counter Clerk Dorisa joined Stevens in May of 2018. She is recognized for her efficient and diligent work ethic in the Central Clearance office. One of Dorisa’s favorite parts of her job are the co-workers and drivers that she gets to interact with on a daily basis. When we asked Dorisa about what motivates her toward her continued success, she said: “I always make an effort to improve on different aspects of my job and make every day better than the last.” Dorisa also shared some helpful advice for new employees: “Keeping a positive mindset every day will help make every day your best!” Outside of work, Dorisa enjoys outdoor activities, shopping at antique stores, and spending time with her daughter and brother.

Dillon Shiplett Tire Technician Dillon joined Paragon Leasing in May of 2018. He is recognized for his continued hard work and dedication to his team. One of Dillon’s favorite parts of his job is the daily interactions he has with drivers when they are receiving assistance with their truck tires. When we asked Dillon about what motivates him toward his continued success, he said: “Knowing the success that my team and I are able to provide to all of the Stevens drivers is what pushes me to always do my best.” Dillon also shared some helpful advice for new employees: “Never be afraid to ask questions. Everyone around you is super knowledgeable and are always willing to help find you answers.” Outside of work, Dillon enjoys playing guitar and spending time with his family.

#MEETSTEVENS Cynthia Hancock Junior Broker Cynthia joined Stevens in August of 2018. She is recognized for her positive attitude and willingness to help both drivers and her co-workers.

One of Cynthia’s favorite parts of her job is building valuable relationships with our multiple carriers. When we asked Cynthia about what motivates her toward her continued success, she said: “I take pride in everything that I do in my position. I always try to make sure that I do everything I can for those I work with.” Cynthia also shared some helpful advice for new employees: “Stay positive and always try your best. During the days that are not the best, make sure to give yourself a chance to see what this industry can offer you.” Outside of work, Cynthia enjoys reading, drawing, cooking, and spending time with her family.

Marina Garcia Alliance Business Counselor Marina joined Stevens in April of this year. She is recognized for her commitment and abundant engagement with both the drivers and her co-workers. One of Marina’s favorite parts of her job is the different challenges that keep her focused and sharp on a daily basis. When we asked Marina about what motivates her toward her continued success, she said: “When I am able to make a difference for a company through the implementation of a change or bring teams together, I feel that I have accomplished the Stevens mission.” Marina also shared some helpful advice for new employees: “There are many knowledgeable people around you that are willing to support you and help navigate you to the answers to your questions.

Keep yourself surrounded by positive people they will uplift you and help you when you may be having a not so great day.” Outside of work, Marina enjoys outdoor activities, exploring the DFW area, and spending time with her family.

James Cooper Parts Supervisor James joined Paragon Leasing in July of 2007. He is recognized for his positive attitude and dedication to his team within the workplace. One of James’ favorite parts about his job is having the opportunity to give back to the company that has given him so much. When we asked James about what motivates him toward his continued success, he said: “My biggest motivation is knowing that my hard work and perseverance will help me achieve greater professional success.”

James also shared some helpful advice for new employees: “Do the best at whatever your position is. Also, keep in mind that success is what you make it.”

Outside of work, James enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family.
