The chanting stopped for a moment. The sitar continued to play, a harp-like, tinkly tone filling the space. Everyone, eyes closed, breathed deeply and then exhaled. I opened my eyes and surveyed the scene, a deep feeling of drowsy satisfaction filling my soul.

I’m In A Vegas State Of Mind

What am I describing? Temple Sinai’s first Jewish mindfulness service. With Scott Linker on electric sitar, his daughter, Sabrina, singing alongside Heather, and Jeremy Meronuck on percussion, not to mention Melvyn, the electric harmonium, we were able to set a beautiful tone, both mentally and musically.

There is a theme sweeping the Jewish, musical world right now. Folks are composing repetitive, mantra-like melodies which put people in a different, meditative headspace. Josh Warshawsky, Joey Weisenberg, Andrew Hahn, the Kirtan Rabbi, the group Nava Tehila. These are the names of people changing the face of the Jewish musical world. Look them up, listen to their stuff, let them change your life! Wednesday March 14 at 7pm will mark the next Jewish Mindfulness Service. It might be a way in for those who don’t enjoy traditional Shul experiences. Reach out to others. Come join us and change your state of mind from troubled to wholly tranquil. L’shalom/to peace Rabbi Malcolm Cohen

Vocalist Kate Harris-Golodner will be taking over the direction of the choir and there will be a special choir Shabbat on March 23rd for Passover.. She will also take over leading the regular Shabbat services, Friday Night Live, and the officiations of the B’nei Mitzvah services. A big thanks to her! Guitarist Taylor Wachman will be taking over music with the kids on Sundays in March and April, as well as helping to lead the grade school and some regular Shabbat services. Sinai’s 20’s 30’s group, Out the Dor, will have our next event on Saturday March 3rd at 7:30 pm at one of the members’ homes. We are thrilled for our first game night with Havdallah and snacks. I also want to send out a big thank you to all of you who have dropped presents for Eli and me and our new baby girl. I feel like I come into my office, and find a present each day! Thank you all for making us feel so appreciated. It means a lot.

I often have the pleasure of teaching certain lessons and communicating with the children and after a few discussions about respect, honor, and acceptance, I asked the students to present a thought about their views of Jewish values. I was moved by the thoughts that many of the students had and from the depth of some of the responses. I must share a few responses with you as I am sure you will appreciate them as much as I do. The Madrichim are perceived as good role models. Some pointed out that some of their peers are seen as ones who do good deeds, some pointed at friends who stand up for people and some recognized those who treat people as they want to be treated. The list goes on and on.

So where do we look for fine tuning of our values in education? Talking to our students and more importantly, listen to them. They have so much to share. It is the responsibility of the adults in their lives to present endless opportunities for the children to think about those things that we Lastly, please do not forget Pop Up Shabbat! Also, Young Adults will have their own ticket which will include a happy hour and post-service event. So, keep an eye out! Remember ---- April 20! With gratitude, Heather

Bat Mitzvah of Justice Reisman Justice Rachel Reisman will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on March 24, 2018. Justice is a sixth grade student at the Adelson Educational Campus where she’s attended since first grade, enjoying all her subjects and excelling this year in art and Judaics. Justice was born on March 24, 2005 in Las Vegas, so she will h a ve t h e s p e c ia l a n d memorable honor of being called to the Torah on the actual day of her 13th birthday. She lives in Las Vegas with her parents Adam and Ryan, her brother Justin, 11, her dog Dood, 2, and her ferret Jake, 1and-a-half. Justice enjoys sports and extra-curricular activities, and this year has been a team member on Adelson’s volleyball, swim, and basketball teams, and also studied fencing. In the past two years, she was a performer in two of Adelson’s school musicals, “Peter Pan” and “The Jungle Book,” and played percussion bells in the school band. Justice is very much a part of the Jewish community, and has been a Temple Sinai member since she was 7. She has been continually active in JCC and local Jewish activities and for many years attended Camp K’Helah and Camp K’Helah Pines in Las Vegas, and for the past two summers, Camp Ramah in Ojai, California. Justice enjoys playing with her animals and her electronics, shooting baskets in the driveway with her brother, trips to the mall for clothes and shoes, swimming in the ocean on family trips to California, and talking her dads into getting her nails done extra times. She can be very persuasive. Friends and family know Justice for her adventurous spirit, her compassionate love of animals, her warm heart and humor, her cleverness and innate wisdom, and her boundless love for Jewish living and learning.

Bar Mitzvah of Jacob Harris Jacob Spencer Harris will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on March 10th, 2018 at Temple Sinai. Jacob was born January 10th, 2005, in Las Vegas. He is the son of Sharon Harris and Yolanda and Scott Harris. His younger brother is Ryan Harris and his older brother is Alex Rodriguez. He is the grandson of Andrea and Jerry Weiss, Tami and Charles Bradshaw, and Larry Morris. He is the nephew of Melanie Morris, Lori and David Umanzio, Aysegul and Michael Weiss, and Ellen and Greg Scialabba. Jacob is a 7th grader at Doral Academy, Red Rock. His favorite subjects are math and science. Jacob aspires to become an astrophysicist where he can discover new stars and maybe even work for N.A.S.A. someday. Jacob practices Tae Kwon Do at Victory Martial Arts and is a purple belt recommended. He also enjoys playing tennis, swimming and playing chess. To relax, Jacob listens to pop music, plays video games, draws, and reads. Jacob is a very bright young man and we are very proud of him as his takes this next step toward adulthood as a Bar Mitzvah.

Alex Weisz— Family & Youth Engagement Coordinator Education is a longstanding tradition in Judaism with Biblical origins. “And you shall teach [Gd’s commandments] to your children, talking when you sit at home and when you walk on the road, when you lie down at night and when you wake up in the morning” (Deuteronomy 11:19). However, perhaps the most famous textual source regarding education is found in the Passover Seder, in the section of the Haggadah about the Four Sons. The Haggadah responds to various questions that different children may have about Passover itself. Traditionally, the four sons are assigned character traits based upon the nature of their questions: wise, wicked, simple, and the one who does not know how to ask. As an educator, I certainly can speak to the idea that there are many different kinds of students. However, I struggle with the traditional interpretation for making such sweeping character accusations based upon small differences between the 4 questions. In particular, I struggle with the stigma against the so-called wicked child; rather than simply asking what the laws and customs of Passover are like the “wise” child, the “wicked” child recognizes how much work is required, and asks why. Instead of accepting the initial answer of the “wise” child, this child wants to know why - which, in my opinion, is the most important question! We should never accept simply practicing our rich customs and traditions at face value alone. By understanding its underlying meaning, origin, and purpose, our millennia-old customs come to life and find their richness. Too often we have too high of expectations for our children - often higher than for ourselves as adults. Perhaps the “wicked children” out there get such a bad reputation by having the intentions of their questions or actions misunderstood or miscommunicated. Rather than assuming the child is wicked, let’s give the child more credit - she or he is curious, and that curiosity should be celebrated rather than stigmatized. It is these curious, critically-thinking children that, while occasionally frustrating for their teacher, make a classroom or dinner table discussion infinitely more interesting and lively. As we make our way towards the Passover holiday, let us take a moment and celebrate the “wicked children” of all ages in our lives for providing the intellectual spark to many a conversation. L’Shalom, Alex Weisz

Next Tot Shabbat Friday, March 16th 6:15 PM to 6:45 PM Bring your little ones, ages 1-5 for a lovely service just for kids (and their parents)!

Our next project will focus on senior citizens. It has come to our attention that many seniors, especially those living alone in assisted living, encounter difficulty paying for adult incontinence products. This is due to price and the fact they are not covered by Medicare. Beginning in late February we will start an adult ‘briefs’ drive. Look for drop off bins in the lobby. Our spring project will focus on ‘kids at risk’. CCSD students who require tutoring after school are provided snacks to enhance their learning. More to come as to what kind of snacks we will be collecting for these students. In conjunction with the snack drive we will be collecting books – any topic, any age from children’s to adult. Look for additional details in the April Shofar. As always, we are grateful for your continued support!

Religious School Parents Dear Parents, It is that time of year again when you can apply for your camp scholarships. If you are in need of a Camp scholarship, you may pick up an application at the Temple office or send a request to School@templesinailv.org and we will email you a copy. Please submit your application in a sealed envelope to the Temple Office. Thank you. The Camp Committee

Shabbat Flyer Sponsorship - For just $18 your personal messages are displayed in the flyer. Sponsor in honor of an anniversary, birthday or any special occasion. Contact Irwin Thall at (702) 444-7939 or itirwin@gmail.com.

Bereavement Group The Bereavement Group meets the 1st and 3rd Wednesday morning at Temple Sinai each month at 10:30 A.M. to 12:00 . What’s ahead in our Torah?

March 2-3 Ki Tisa

Moses takes a census of the Israelites. Bezalel and Oholiab are given the skills to construct the utensils for the priests. With Moses atop Mt. Sinai, the people ask Aaron to make a Golden Calf. G-d is not happy!

Vayakhel-Pekude We learn the rules of Shabbat. Bezalel and Oholiab direct the building of the Mishkan. A detailed accounting of the materials used in the construction is given. A cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night announces G-d’s dwelling in the Mishkan. March 9-10

March 16-17 Vayikra We begin the third book of the Torah,

Vayikra or Leviticus. We learn how to prepare different offerings to G-d. We struggle to find modern meanings to them.

March 23-24 Tzav More instructions for priestly offerings. Details about Aaron and his sons’ ordinations are given, as well as the preparation of the Tabernacle.

March 30-31 Shabbat Pesach A special reading from Exodus. We are commanded to tell our children of our Redemption from Egypt – the story in the haggadah.
