President’s Message Dear Congregants, January and February are relatively slow times as far as Temple activities go. This has given our staff a chance to catch up on their work and plan for the remainder of the year. Our new Executive Director, Marty Hagans has been very busy organizing the staff and handling many projects. You will notice a difference in the appearance of the property, both inside and out. A nominating committee has been appointed and shortly will be sending letters out to the congregation requesting applications for board positions. Please consider applying for a board position if you feel that you have skill sets that can be utilized by the temple. A slate of nominees will be presented to the congregation for voting at the Annual meeting on May 6, 2018. Our next major event will be our annual Gala at Red Rock Casino and Hotel. The Gala is on March 10, 2018. The gala committee is doing something very different this year, which I think you will find to be quite enjoyable. Please get your reservations into the Temple office. Also, we would appreciate ads in the tribute book for our honorees, Wendy Kraft and Laura Sussman. Again, please call the office if you would like to place an ad. Until next month. I once asked a Rabbi who had served the same congregation for thirty years, how he kept things fresh. He replied simply, “I read!” He may have been giving me the brush-off, but on reflection, he had a point. Being exposed to new ideas, Jewish or otherwise, keeps us fresh, gives us inspiration and revitalizes our souls.

Read Books… To Live!

The problem of course, is our smartphones. I read stuff on my phone but often in short, sharp chunks of online content, fleeting and shallow. Articles, not books, snapshots, not novels. That doesn’t mean our phones are bad, they expose us to new ideas as well, it’s just that

we go deeper and wider with books. I’m not only talking about Jewish books by the way. Since the French Revolution, Jews have been open to exploring concepts way beyond the crumbling, ghetto walls. In recent months, I have read a book about a woman’s obsession with a hawk, the different equipment soldiers carry around with them, a tome of overlapping stories about Chinese immigrant life, and a novel set in nineteenth century, rural England. I got something from all of them, even when I found the reading hard-going. After I had devoured the final word crumbs of each, there was left an afterglow, a sense of achievement, and a hint that I had been transformed for the better. I’m biased, of course. My upbringing as the son of a bookseller and my vocation as a Rabbi who has the privilege of dealing with sacred texts every day helps me lean towards a life of reading. But I implore you to do the same. Look for the bestsellers, the Jewish book festival lists, the random recommendations. Consult with family members and friends and work out what floats your literary boat...and then tell me what you’re reading. This article is meant to inspire you, but it will also hopefully lead to a whole new raft of reading suggestions for me! Trust me, you won’t regret it. Reading books will change your life. It will nourish you spiritually, intellectually and emotionally. It will open up endless new windows on the world. L’shalom/to peace Rabbi Malcolm Cohen

Bat Mitzvah of Kate Wingate Kate Linda Wingate will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on February 3, 2018. Kate is a 7th grader at Doral Academy Red Rock. Kate is a bright student and has been invited to join the National Junior Honor Society. For the past six years Kate has dedicated herself to competitive gymnastics. She practices 22 hours a week at Flip For Me Gymnastics. She loves spending time with her family, friends and cat, Elijah. When it’s time to relax and have fun, Kate plays video games, watches YouTube, and experiments with making different types of slime. Her favorites shows are Bratayley, 8 passengers, iJustine and Rebeeca Zamalo. Kate loves discovering new places. An avid traveler, she has visited Mexico, San Francisco, New York, and Chicago in the last year. This summer she plans to visit several countries in Southern Asia. She enjoys giving back to the community by volunteering at the JCC Barbeque, feeding the homeless and raising money for the NSPCA.

Bar Mitzvah of Jordan Snyder Jordan Mac Snyder will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on February 10, 2018. Jordan is a seventh grade student at Alexander Dawson and is an Honor Student. Jordan enjoys sports and plays quarterback for his school team as well as other leagues. He also plays lacrosse and runs track. Jordan also has a love for music, especially alternative and pop punk bands. In addition to creating his own songs and beats and being a student at School of Rock, Jordan is in his own band that will play at his Bar Mitzvah. Jordan has two younger brothers, Luc (11) and Jude (8), and is a great big brother most of the time and a black Lab, Nola who is 9. During summers, Jordan is a camper at Camp Cedar in Maine and has developed some great friendships there with kids from all over the country. When he is not playing sports or practicing music, Jordan likes to play video games and ride his bike in the neighborhood with his brothers and friends.

Bar Mitzvah of Jacob Futrell Jacob Alden Futrell will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on February 24th, 2018. Jacob was born Feb 13, 2005 in Las Vegas. He lives with his parents, Susan and Robert, along with his brothers Ben (14) and Mason (7), his best dog Astra and freaky cat Spooks.

Jacob is in 7th grade at Hyde Park Math and Science Academy. He is a performer in the Hyde Park guitar program and will travel to Anaheim, California for a music competition in March. Jacob also enjoys science and hopes to someday become a guitar-playing robotics engineer. Jacob is very athletic. He is an accomplished rock climber. As a member of the Red Rock Climbing Center’s climbing team, he excels at bouldering, and has participated in several local and regional competitions. He especially enjoys bouldering at Red Rock Conservation Area. Jacob also enjoys soccer, puzzles, video games and sleeping. Friends and family know Jacob’s gentle and caring nature. Some even call him the “baby whisperer,” for his amazing ability to bring smiles to baby’s faces. We are so very excited to see Jacob take his next step toward adulthood as a Bar Mitzvah.

Alex Weisz— Family & Youth Engagement Coordinator Amongst my biggest professional pet peeves is the common misconception that Judaism’s traditions and holidays are outdated and irrelevant in the modern, secular world. While Judaism is certainly a religion of laws and customs, the idea that the traditions of our people that have lasted for centuries and millennia are suddenly irrelevant is at best closed-minded, and at worst cripplingly arrogant. Reform Judaism is unlike Conservative and Orthodox Judaism by allowing freedom and experimentation within Jewish practice - the Reform Jew should be knowledgeable of our texts and traditions, but has the freedom to observe however is meaningful for them. Unfortunately, this often leads to a perception that “we don’t do (insert custom/tradition here) because we’re Reform Jews.” Instead, we must wrestle with our traditions in order to determine what practices we find meaningful enough to insert into our regular lives. Each holiday in the Jewish calendar has an underlying purpose that is pragmatic and useful within modern life - and Shabbat is perhaps the finest example. It is truly the finest gift that Judaism has to offer; unfortunately, its observance is often characterized as being restrictive rather than meaningful. Shabbat is a separation in time, an opportunity to step away from our busy lives and to reflect upon ourselves each week. It is a time to be with our family and community; a scheduled time to tell our partners that we appreciate them and our children we love them. It is an opportunity to set aside our work lives and to be with those who matter most without distraction. For some folks, Shabbat means turning off electronics and attending services; for others, lighting candles at the family dinner table followed by board games and a movie before bed; my strongest recommendation is stopping work and homework for a certain amount, if not for all of, Shabbat. However an individual or a family chooses to “remember the Sabbath and keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8), what matters is making it special and different, to stop and reflect, and to be with the people who make our lives whole. It is a weekly gift that, if utilized, is a wonderful tool towards a more mindful and healthy well-being. Due to its success in November, we are so excited to be having our second community Shabbat Sha-Brunch program. While many of us regularly experience the delight of Shabbat evening, Shabbat continues through Saturday afternoon into the sunset. Shabbat Sha-Brunch is a community-wide, family-friendly Saturday morning program hosted in a congregant’s home (the sight of a Torah scroll on a coffee table is beautifully striking), with a brief and lively service followed by a Shabbat-themed brunch. Our next Shabbat Sha-Brunch is on Saturday, March 17th at 11 AM in the home of Ilana and David Shapiro, located at 8019 Echo Cliff Lane, 89129. Mark your calendars so you won’t miss out on this wonderful program! L’Shalom, Alex Gregory Weisz

Lifelong Learning (Torah) – Wherever you find yourself, we want to help you get to the next stage of your Jewish journey. We offer formal and informal opportunities for learners to find genuine meaning and answers to keenly felt moral questions and personal issues within the Jewish tradition. You will notice that we have a wonderful range of events from stand-alone events to three-session mini-courses to a two-year in- depth study. For this congregation, the social experience of learning is extremely important alongside the content of our study. We hope that you will deepen your connections to our heritage and each other as you move to the next stage of your journey. What’s ahead in our Torah? February 2-3 Yitro Moses’ father-in-law brings him good advice. We gather at Mt Sinai to hear the words from G-d, the Ten commandments.

February 9-10 Mishpatim We learn of the Pilgrimage Festivals – Pesach, Shavuot and Sukkot. Moses spends 40 days and nights atop Mt. Sinai.

the building of the Mishkan. G-d gives us the instruction manuals for the Ark, menorah and Tabernacle.
