Dear Congregants,

President’s Message

September is a very busy time for the staff and volunteers at Temple Sinai. We are getting ready for High Holy Days. This is a humungous task and we are well on our way to completion. You will notice a curtailment of events the week prior to High Holy Days and during the period from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur. This is necessary due to the fact that once we have set up the Event Center with chairs for High Holy Day services, it is a major task to remove them and set them up again. Our Youth and Community Engagement Coordinator Alex Weisz has been with us since the middle of July. Alex hit the ground running and has been going at 100 mph since. He is meeting with a number of our youth, as well as other individuals in and out of the Temple Sinai community. We are looking forward to some very interesting programs and events that Alex will create for our youth. As you drive around the building, please notice the new permanent shade structure that was installed on the East playground of Shenker Academy. In the past, we had temporary shade structures that were constantly being blown over by the wind. This new shade structure will eliminate this issue. The Open House for Temple Sinai Religious School was on August 6, 2017. It was a very successful event that resulted in a number of students registering for the 2017-2018 year. Registration for the fall semester at Shenker Academy began at the end of the spring semester and has carried through this summer. There are virtually waiting lists for all classes. This is due to the efforts of Dr. Sharon Knafo and his staff. Please begin to think about your Kol Nidre Appeal donation. A strong appeal is vital to the financial stability of the Temple. My wife Eileen and I wish all of you and your families a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. L’Shona Tova, Les Sherman President

What Job Do We Hire Religion For?

Last month our water heater broke. We asked around for a plumber and found one. He arrived the next day, put in a new heater and we were back up and running soon enough. We paid him and were satisfied with the job that we hired him to do. It is a similar situation with a roofer, an electrician, a midwife. They have one job, they do it, they get paid. There is direct satisfaction.

The situation is more complicated when it comes to religion. People pay to be part of religious institutions So what job are those groups being paid to do? The answer comes from Rabbi Irwin Kula at the National Jewish Center for Learning & Leadership. He suggests that we hire religion to do the following seven things:

Board of Trustees Isaac Cohen Vera Ginsburg Ricki Greenspon Stephanie Helms Jack Kaufman Jay Kenyon Ivan Lambert

1. Connection: we want to be in a relationship with other humans. 2. Personal growth: we want to develop our mind, body and soul. 3. Social transformation: making the world a better place. 4. Meaning: finding our purpose in life. 5. Common Space: carving out a place where strangers become friends. 6. Creativity: increasing our curiosity and imagination. 7. Accountability: holding ourselves and others responsible for being ethical.

Immediate Past President Julie Ann Littmann

Now you might not agree with all of these, but religion has to do some of them otherwise it is not doing the job it was hired for. We do not just become members of shuls so that the shul exists for its own sake, to keep the doors open and the lights on, but for something greater and grander.

Cantorial Soloist Heather Klein We are finally into Fall and I cannot be more excited to welcome the cooler weather, as we enter into September. Last month we began our Religious School and I am excited to bring the music I learned this summer to the ears of our students. This month brings the High Holy Days, and I could not be more excited to welcome Jason ManLaPaz as our pianist during the holidays as well as Friday Night Live and Friday nights. He is a wonderful addition to our musical team, and I am honored that he will be with us. Please make sure to say hello and make him feel welcome. Our High Holy Days choir has been working tirelessly all summer to be ready and I am so excited for you to hear and pray with them this year. As our programs begin again, I hope our Young Adults at Sinai will be excited to know that Shabbat After Dark is back and will begin at Congregation Ner Tamid on October 6th. In September Sinai Young Adults Committee have a program attached to our first Friday Night Live. So, SAVE THE DATE! Lastly, as this new year begins, I want to express how happy I am to have gotten to know so many of you, and been a part of so many Simcha’s this year. Now entering my 3rd year at Temple Sinai, I feel I have a better sense of the needs of our community and the greater Jewish community, and how I can be a partner through Temple Sinai to create positive change. Happy Fall, Heather

Dr. Sharon Knafo New Beginning We are very excited to start our 2017-18 school year, and I want thank everyone who attended the open house/orientation on August 6th.. Special thanks to the Temple Sinai Men’s Club, and to Les Gilbert, who sponsored the ice cream social. It is an honor to work with a team of professional teachers in the Religious School, and with the wonderful Madrichim (counselors) who support the Religious School every Sunday. We also welcome the 2017/8 Israeli emissary (Shinshinim), and an exchange student from the Leo Baek school in Haifa, Israel, who will support our Hebrew language sessions and programs on Sundays. This great team will be helping the teachers and the students with their classrooms, during programs, at holiday events, preparing our Sunday award ceremonies, supporting our Shabbat programs, joining our retreats, Tikkun Olams and above all, supporting each other to create a unique and enriching experience for almost 100 students every Sunday. I am excited to work again with Aimee Knox (PreK-K), Gail Dupre (2nd), Ira Yaniv (3rd), Ruti Gross (4th), Hedva Bank (5th), Limor Minuskin (6th), Alyson Sinai and Yael Ben Shimon (7th). We welcome our new teacher – Ms. Danica (1st) with best wishes for a wonderful beginning. We are excited to have another year of academics, Hebrew language, Choir with Cantorial Soloist Heather Klein, assemblies with Rabbi Cohen, Judaism, values, programs, Tikkun Olam projects, movie nights, get togethers and more. I am sure that the new Youth Director – Mr. Alex Weisz, will bring a new spirit and energy to our school through the Madrichim. Shabbat Shalom, Dr. Sharon R. Knafo Education Director

Alex Weisz—Youth & Engagement Coordinator One of Judaism’s greatest sages, Hillel the Elder, taught that “you should never separate yourself from the community.” Wise words indeed. However, Hillel couldn’t have possibly anticipated the nature of Judaism in 2017. In this day and age, separating oneself from the community is often more complicated than people’s disinterest in Jewish life - rather, often it is because one struggles to find their place within the community. Due to the big-picture dilemmas that synagogues face worldwide, most of all low affiliation rates and declining synagogue membership, the need for a real, interactive and engaging community programming is more important than it has ever been. Though this battle is a widespread one, it requires mobilization on the local, grassroots level; fortunately, the solution is very simple: ensuring that our community is something to be a part of, rather than something to join. Joining something is often a byproduct of obligation or expectation, whereas being a part of something is effortless - it just happens and it feels right. The key here is for us to recognize that a community (especially a Jewish one) is never homogeneous - in reality, it is made up of many smaller communities, some larger than others, that comes together to create a beautifully diverse congregation like Temple Sinai. In my new position of Community & Youth Engagement Coordinator, my focus has been ensuring that our community’s diverse membership has the available infrastructure to find their part of the community that best fits their wants and needs. After all, simply joining something is a passive action; becoming a part of something is an active process that creates a much stronger bond - it is from the latter that Rabbi Hillel warns against leaving. Therefore it is our duty as a synagogue to ensure that all of the parts of our community are dynamic and engaging, and I am so excited that we are creating and re-committing ourselves to these critical spaces. For our children and teens, our newly re-chartered NFTY chapter will allow our young people to make Temple Sinai their home, giving them ownership by creating their own community of healthy and positive Jewish relationships with their peers through teen-planned events. When given the opportunity and resources, teens become incredible community organizers and lay-leaders simply by having fun together in a Jewish setting. Under Heather Klein’s phenomenal leadership, Temple Sinai’s new young adults group, Out the DOr, will be hosting fun events for young professionals. Finally, I have been working with a committed and insightful group of parents in our new Family Committee to advise me in the planning and coordination of family programming within Temple Sinai. While these groups are focused on specific demographics within our congregation, ultimately these many parts will come together to improve the whole. I am so excited about these up-and-coming programs, so please keep your eyes peeled for the many events that will be coming up! To paraphrase Elie Wiesel “a tree can grow on its own, but a Jew cannot” - let’s grow together. L’Shalom, Alex Weisz

From Your Sisterhood August 20th, was a busy day for our Sisterhood. We began the day by having our first ever “Blow out Sale”. The attendance for our Open Meeting was fantastic and we had a wonderful program, “Happiness and the Keys to being Happy,” presented by Dr. Carol Altman Zaslowsky. A lovely lunch was served and we restarted the Secret Sister Program, which was so successful last year. We are off to a great start this year. Sisterhood is working hard on promoting our “Attic Sale”, which will be held at the Temple on October 22nd. We are counting on the Temple membership to assist in this effort by saving their gently-used merchandise. We will be collecting at the Temple from October 17th through the 20th. There will be diverse merchandise, including men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, as well as household items. We are planning outside advertising prior to the sale to attract the community to our sale. We would like to encourage the women of Temple Sinai to join and be a part of our Sisterhood. We are working to provide Temple Sinai, the Religious School and the Youth Group with needed resources, while having an enjoyable time doing it. B’Shalom, Marge

Thank you to all who contributed to the school supply drive. The congregation’s generous donations will greatly assist Jewish Family Services students with their school work.

The next Social Action Committee project is collecting food items for the Jewish Family Services Food Bank. We will be handing out paper bags after services on Erev Rosh Hashanah (Sept 20th) and on the first day of Rosh Hashanah (Sept 21st). Please take as many bags as you can fill. We are asking that the bags be returned with non-perishable food items on Erev Yom Kippur (Sept 29th) or on Yom Kippur (Sept 30th). A list of the food items JFSA needs will be attached to each bag handed out and will also be available in the Temple lobby.

Beautiful Timeline Addition to the Library A beautiful and useful addition has been posted onto our Library wall. It is a "Brief Timeline of the Jewish People", from the birth of Abraham (1813 BCE) to the present day. The Timeline is the result of months of work by seven Temple Sinai scholars whose names are posted on the Timeline. Multiple sources for the information were used. Conflicting dates were resolved by the group members' deliberation. When did Masada fall to the Romans? When did the nation of Khazaria become a Jewish country? When was the Exodus? When did the Red Sea part? Expansion of some of the entries will be posted in a notebook already begun. It has been placed on our Library shelves in the "History" section. Temple Sinai members are encouraged to expand or comment on any of the Timeline entries by sending an email message to Dr. Jeffrey S. Kaiser at jeff@vfi-nevada.org containing all three of the following: 1) the Timeline date, 2) your comment (or expansion), and 3) your bibliographical or web source reference for your information. Appropriate comments will be included in the notebook.

Bereavement Group The Bereavement Group will meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month at Temple Sinai 10:30 am - 12:00 noon. We strive to help those who have lost their loved ones to try to go on as well as possible making a new life by themselves while meeting new people in the group who are attempting to do the same thing. The facilitator for the group is my friend Debby Goldman. Debby volunteered and is doing a wonderful job. We also get together weekly for coffee at 10:00 am Saturday morning at Leones in Tivoli and also plan either lunch or dinner for anyone wanting to come usually on a weekly basis. Please call me with any questions you may have or if you know someone who might benefit from coming. You can give them my phone number. Myrna Brown 702-804-9910

Did You Know? Marcus Charles Illions (1865-1949) considered the world's greatest carousel carver, hand crafted the horses on Coney Island's merry-go-rounds. Before coming to the US, he created a Torah Ark, with a lion on each side of the Ten Commandments. It can be seen at the Skirball Cultural Center Museum in LA.

Lifelong Learning At Temple Sinai Temple Sinai is a warm and welcoming Reform Jewish community engaged in lifelong learning, social justice, and soulful worship. Lifelong Learning (Torah) – Wherever you find yourself, we want to help you get to the next stage of your Jewish journey. We offer formal and informal opportunities for learners to find genuine meaning and answers to keenly felt moral questions and personal issues within the Jewish tradition. You will notice that we have a wonderful range of events from stand-alone events to three-session mini-courses to a two-year in- depth study.
