President’s Message Dear Congregants, September was a very busy time due to the High Holy Days. October followed suit, celebrating Sukkot and Simchat Torah. Many thanks to Rabbi Cohen, Heather Klein and the Temple Sinai Staff. October also started with the worst massacre in United States and Las Vegas history. I believe President Trump said it well, “an act of pure evil”. Rabbi Cohen and Heather had a beautiful memorial and healing service on Monday October 2, 1017. I was pleased to see how Temple Sinai members rallied by donating blood to the victims and food for their families. On a happier note. On Kol Nidre I spoke about the investment Temple Sinai is making in youth programming and activities. I am pleased to announce that on October 17, 2017 we opened a teen lounge. The lounge is to be used for meetings and programs as well as a place where teens can go on a daily basis to meet their friends and do their homework. We utilized existing space without modification and primarily furnished the lounge with furniture that we already owned or was donated. The lounge, which will include Alex Wiesz’s office, is located adjacent to the Gift Shop. This is a major step in keeping our youth post Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Please mark your calendar for 6:30pm on Wednesday November 15, 2017 for a presentation on lifetime and post mortem giving to charity. Also, the concept of making charitable contributions from your IRA account will be discussed. Until next month,

Les Sherman President

It Is Forbidden To Despair

November 2017 I have spoken to many of you in the aftermath of the mass shooting. I have been moved by those conversations and how Las Vegas has pulled together as a city. After a service that same week, an Israeli journalist asked me, “Don’t you feel despair in such situations?” I replied, at times like these, I am reminded of the famous teaching of the Hasidic leader, Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, where he said, “It is forbidden to despair. If it’s good enough for him, it’s good enough for me.”

It is a simple phrase but hard to carry out. Sometimes, like that Sunday night at the beginning of October, we do feel despair, quite understandably. I certainly can’t imagine what the wounded and families of those who were murdered feel. They might well feel despair in their darker moments, so it’s up to us to go the other way, to set despair aside to help them. For Rebbe Nachman of Breslov to say those words was a big deal. This was someone who lived a hard life at the end of the eighteenth century/beginning of the nineteenth century in the Ukraine. Two of his kids pre-deceased him, he suffered from bipolar disorder, was thwarted in his attempts to visit the land of Israel, and it was tuberculosis that killed him. Even with all of that, in the very last few days of his life, he exhorted his disciples not to despair, to not banish hope, to always continue believing in the possibility of goodness triumphing over evil. I have a tendency to agree with him. When we see lines around the corner of people waiting to give blood, it’s forbidden to despair. When we see mountains of snacks, water and other supplies being taken to hospital waiting rooms, it’s forbidden to despair. When we hear the stories of first responders and members of the public putting themselves in danger for those they had never met during the mass shooting, it’s forbidden to despair. When we witness a city pulling together in love and kindness in direct response to great evil, it’s forbidden to despair. L’shalom/To Peace

Rabbi Malcolm Cohen

November 2017

Cantorial Soloist Heather Klein Sinai Family, October was a difficult month. Besides Vegas dealing with the Route 91 massacre, the rest of the country either was dealing with life destroying fires or hurricanes. With everything going on I find myself glued to the news. I remember when I was in college, I thought “What do I need the synagogue for? I have so much going on.” But I remember after 9/11, I wanted to be somewhere safe where I could be with the entire community. So, I went to a local synagogue. I had been there before, for a young adult service, but not for something like this. I felt everyone coming together through the music and a need to reach out. It was an amazing feeling, and I felt it again this week. On October 2nd we had a healing service where I felt that same need from the community to come together, sing, pray and reach out for one another. It made me so proud to be a Jew and be part of the Las Vegas community. November brings my favorite holiday of them all with the Macy’s day parade tradition with my family, and the of course the tradition to cook and bake all day, and then enjoy the spoils. It’s always a great segue into the Vegas winter. Out the Dor (Sinai Young Adults) has been very active in its first year already with: Happy Hour, TopGolf, Dave and Busters/Friday Night Live, and Gilcrease Orchards for apple picking. We are so excited to continue the fun on December 1st when Sinai partners with Ner Tamid to host Shabbat After Dark (Hanukkah Style). Please come out and support the choir as they continue their Choir Shabbat, and also prepare for some holiday singing. Last but not least. SAVE THE DATE: December 10 Beit T’filah Israeli will be coming to Las Vegas to perform a special show of Hanukkah songs for the entire Jewish community at The Industrial Space off Sahara and 15. Tickets will start selling soon, so keep an eye out! We are partnering with several community organizations, and very excited to have them be a part of this special event! There will be sufganiyot, cash bar and activities for all ages! #VegasStrong, Heather

Dr. Sharon Knafo 21st Century Education It’s no secret that the face of education has changed dramatically over the past ten years or so. Teachers across the country are working hard to equip children with the skills needed for success in the 21st century world. In addition to instilling in students the flexibility to readily adapt to changing technologies and ideas, we aim to foster learning environments that encourage critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, global awareness and social responsibility. Through integrating technology into the classrooms (smart boards, laptops, tablets), cooperative learning structures (i.e. group work), differentiated instruction (group work, individual attention), goal setting (benchmark skills), cross curriculum teaching (arts and math, L/A and science), and advanced assessments, the teachers at Shenker Academy & the Religious School are making strides to elevate teaching and learning for our students. During each learning session, teachers are instructed to emphasize one or more aspects of 21st century learning, and our results in the prekindergarten and kindergarten tests show the effects of these educational traits. As for the Religious School, our classes integrate the above learning and teaching traits, while following the guidelines of our curricula . Shabbat Shalom, Dr. Sharon R. Knafo Education Director

Next Tot Shabbat Friday, November 17th 6:15 PM to 6:45 PM Bring your little ones, ages 1-5 for a lovely service just for kids (and their parents)!

Alex Weisz—Youth & Engagement Coordinator Shalom Everyone! The Fall is a season of change - fortunately it has been for the best for the young people in our community. I am so honored that Temple Sinai’s NFTY youth groups, SVTY, has made the considerable progress that it has over the last few months, and October was a month full of highlights and major steps forward. First, we had our opening program for SVTY678, our middle school youth group, with our Sleepover in the Sukkah. Between Candy Sukkot, a scavenger hunt, and a viewing of Space Jam, it was quite eventful! Just a few weeks later, we opened our new Youth Lounge, which is a critical investment in the youth of our community. Finally, we sent a delegation of 9 SVTY members to NFTY-Southwest’s Fall Kallah in Arizona, the first of 3 regional weekends that will be taking place this year. It was an incredible turnout for a group that has been in existence for less than 3 months, and I’m thrilled that our kids had such a great time! November is a very exciting time for SVTY. Not only will it be our first full month with our newly opened Youth Lounge (just behind the Gift Shop!), but we also have an exciting month of programs coming up as well! For our 3rd-5th graders, Mini-SVTY will be having our opening event of the school year with our Bowling Extravaganza on Sunday, November 5th from 1-3 PM at Suncoast Casino for only $15! For our middle schoolers, SVTY678 will be hosting an evening at Gravady Extreme Air Sports for an evening to develop new friendships and cardiovascular strength (both via trampoline!) on Tuesday, November 14th at 6:30 PM! The cost is only $15, which includes the required Gravady socks! Finally, for our high schoolers, SVTY will be hosting a lounge night on Tuesday, November 7th from 6:30-8 PM in our Youth Lounge, as well as the traditional Temple Sinai Lock-In on Saturday, November 18th at 7 PM! For more information on these and other programs, send me an email at A_Weisz@TempleSinaiLV.org or by visiting our Youth Group website at http://templesinailv.org/community/youth-group/. L’Shalom, Alex Weisz

Dearest Tanta Jane: When I was born you were but fourteen; A new addition to your inseparable team; But here I was all cuddly and cute for two sisters, now there was an interrupting brute. A little brother for you to dress, to watch and sit and kiss and caress. And that was the beginning of our love story; Of years of care and concern and frustration and glory; You were always there for me and mine And I for you for all that time; Goods and bads, ups and downs, Smiles and sadness and faces of clowns; But my dear Tanta, the one lasting forever Was the love you gave and I gave back A bond that we shared for ever and ever; A life of love is not lived, it is expressed and shown The feelings we experience and the feelings we own Dream sweetly dear Tanta Jane you are the best As I dream of you and we lay you to rest. Bereavement Group The Bereavement Group will meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month at Temple Sinai from 10:30 am - 12:00 noon. We strive to help those who have lost their loved ones to try to go on as well as possible making a new life by themselves while meeting new people in the group who are attempting to do the same thing. The facilitator for the group is my friend Debby Goldman. Debby volunteered and is doing a wonderful job. We also get together weekly for coffee at 10:00 am on Saturday mornings at Leones in Tivoli and also plan either lunch or dinner for anyone wanting to come. Please call me with any questions you may have or if you know someone who might benefit from coming. You can give them my phone number. Myrna Brown 702-804-9910

Lifelong Learning At Temple Sinai Temple Sinai is a warm and welcoming Reform Jewish community engaged in lifelong learning, social justice, and soulful worship. Lifelong Learning (Torah) – Wherever you find yourself, we want to help you get to the next stage of your Jewish journey. We offer formal and informal opportunities for learners to find genuine meaning and answers to keenly felt moral questions and personal issues within the Jewish tradition. You will notice that we have a wonderful range of events from stand-alone events to three-session mini-courses to a two-year in- depth study. For this congregation, the social experience of learning is extremely important alongside the content of our study. We hope that you will deepen your connections to our heritage and each other as you move to the next stage of your journey. For more information on specific classes, please visit www.templesinailv.org.

L’shalom/To Peace Rabbi Malcolm Cohen

What’s ahead in our Torah? November 3-4 Vayera

We read many stories about Abraham. He welcomes three strangers (angels?). He argues with G-d about Sodom and Gomorrah. He is commanded by G-d to sacrifice his son Isaac!

November 10-11 Chayei Sara

Abraham purchases the caves of Machpelah, near Hebron, to bury Sara. Isaac takes Rebecca for a wife. Abraham dies and his TWO sons bury him by Sara.

November 17-18 Toledot

The parsha is dominated by the story of Esau and Jacob; Rebecca and Jacob’s deception; and Esau’s supposed threat.

November 24-25 Vayetzei Jacob dreams of angels going up and down a ladder. G-d blesses him. Jacob works for Laban for 21 years marrying Leah and amassing great wealth. He leaves Laban with his wives and eleven sons!
