President’s Message Dear Congregants, November was a relatively quiet month. I feel our staff and clergy needed the break after two months of back to back holidays. On December 3, 2017, we will hold a Board retreat. The retreat is being facilitated by a representative from the Union of Reform Judaism (URJ). Our focus is on membership acquisition and retention; and leadership development. I feel that the time spent on the Board Retreat will be very worth while and will have tremendous payback in the future.

Please mark your calendar for March 10, 2018. This will be our 7th Annual Gala. We will be honoring Laura Sussman and Wendy Kraft. It is going to be a very exciting and fun filled event. There will be more information forthcoming. Please consult the eblasts, flyers and other Shofar articles which will provide the necessary information. You may have noticed a huge machine around campus. We recently purchased a scissors lift. Many of the locations within our building are inaccessible by a ladder. In the past, we have had to pay contractors or rent a scissors lift. We are bringing more and more building repairs and maintenance in house and therefore felt the need to purchase a refurbished scissors lift. We feel that the payback on this will be somewhere around six months. Now for the good news and the bad news. First, the good news: there is only one stained glass window available for purchase. For the bad news: there is only one stained glass window available for purchase. This is your last chance to purchase a window either individually or as a group. The cost is $10,000 and may, at the option of the purchaser, be paid over five years. If you are interested in purchasing the last stained glass window, please contact either Phil Scully or myself. Happy Chanukah to you and your family. Les Sherman President

The Job To Be Done settings, not just in synagogues.

December 2017 In the past two months I have been taking part in the Rabbis Without Borders fellowship. It’s a program of the National Center for Jewish Learning and Leadership, otherwise known as CLAL. Despite the name, the group does not go to far-flung places to offer rabbinic care! Instead, the assumption of the program is that we can use Judaism to help people flourish. The assumption is that Judaism has something unique to offer even beyond the boundaries of the Jewish community. 20 Reportajes are chosen each year to be on the program. The Rabbis come from all walks of life, from all Jewish denominations, and work in different

On the most recent retreat we learned a particular idea which I wanted to share with you, which I mentioned at High Holy Days. It’s the concept of the job to be done. It comes from the business world. There’s a guy called Clayton Christensen who works at the Harvard Business School and McDonald’s asked him to try and sell more of their milkshakes. He stood in the parking lot of McDonald’s for 18 hours and watched all the customers who bought milkshakes carefully. And it turned out that about half of the milkshakes were sold before 8:30 in the morning. It was the only thing they bought, they were always alone, and they always got in the car and drove off with it. So the next morning he asked a bunch of them why they bought milkshakes and after long conversations he worked out that they all had the same job to do. That is, they had a long and boring drive to work and they just needed something to have while they were driving to stay engaged with life and not fall asleep. One hand had to be on the wheel, but geez, somebody gave me another hand, and there’s nothing in it. And I just needed something to do while I’m driving. In other words, they hired the milkshake to do the job of keeping them company and occupied on their drive to work. So Christensen helped McDonald’s work out that as long as the milkshake was the correct thickness and lasted the whole journey, they would sell more milkshakes, and he was right! When we hire a contractor on our house we are hiring them to do the job of fixing or building our house. When we hire a gardener we are hiring them to do the job of landscaping or maintaining our garden. So what are we hiring religion to do?

Martin Seligman, the father of positive psychology, suggests the following five things are the things we need to flourish as human beings and Rabbi Irwin Kula suggests the same five things are what we hire religion to do: Positive emotions, engagement (being in the moment and feeling on your game), relationships, meaning (in life) and a sense of achievement. Any of the stuff we do at Temple Sinai should include some of these outcomes. If it doesn’t, then Temple Sinai is not helping people flourish and not doing the job we were hired to do. So, if you see me glassy eyed over the next few months and it seems like my brain is working overtime, then it probably means I’m thinking about whether our congregation is truly helping people flourish and truly doing the job that people hired it to do. L’shalom/To Peace Rabbi Malcolm Cohen

Cantorial Soloist Heather Klein Chaverim! What a wonderful month filled with activities we have in our community. First, don’t forget to come out on December 10 from 3-6 pm for POP UP HANUKKAH! Beit T’filah Israeli is coming straight from performing on the docks in Tel Aviv to perform a special show of Chanukkah songs for the entire Jewish community at The Industrial Event Space off Sahara and 15. Buy your tickets NOW! Only $10 in advance and $15 at the door, plus special family rates. There will be sufganiyot, a special family program with the IAC, and a special tasting offered for our Young Adults in Out the Dor, and in the greater community. Also, we are excited to have our Junior Choir have a chance to perform a song with the band! We are partnering with several community organizations including our sister reform synagogue Congregation Ner Tamid, P’nai Tikvah and closely working with the IAC to make this a very special kickoff to Hanukkah! This is NOT to be missed! Our Young Adults also have a nice start to the month with Friday Night Live on December 1st, as well as Shabbat After Dark: Festival of Lights at Temple Sinai. We will join our young adult group Out the Dor with NextGen as we welcome Shabbat and the Chanukkah season together with a Sufganiyot and Shmooze pre-neg, a young adult led service, appetizers and drinks at a local spot. Lastly, do not miss our Choir Shabbat this month and in January. We always have a wonderful time presenting the prayers in a new way, or having a chance to teach new melodies to the congregation. Chag Chanukkah, and a Happy New Year (A freylikn naye yor!) Heather

Dr. Sharon Knafo Mid-Year Reflection As we approach the midyear with our winter break, I want to take the time to reflect on our educational journey this semester. First, we made the transition to a long Sunday, which encompassed a few schedule challenges, as well as curriculum and content adjustments. Second, we started this year with implementing Hebrew curriculum from an early age, pre-kindergarten through 7th grade, an initiative that already shows a positive effect on Hebrew reading in the classrooms. Third, we integrated our Shinshinim (Israeli emissary) to increase the Zionist/Israel current events education as we chose to focus on cities, culture and military life in Israel. Fourth, we worked diligently to preserve the traditional Friday Night Programs for each grade, and the 7th graders and the 5th & 6th grades presented their topics, helping to lead Friday night services. Our philosophy in developing academic skills is to furnish students with experiences that nurture aptitude in critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, etc. We make an effort to include arts, music and other enrichments within their curriculum, as we aim to design a well-rounded program that consistently demonstrates the value of enriching activities and courses for developing these broader set of skills and interests. We have plenty of programs and learning coming up in January of 2018, and I suggest that you take the time to look at the remaining months of the school year, and see the great plans we have. Shabbat Shalom, Dr. Sharon R. Knafo Education Director

Alex Weisz—Youth & Engagement Coordinator Like most American Jewish children growing up, I have always had a soft-spot for Chanukkah due to the week-long extravaganza of presents (even though most nights consisted of socks) and like most American Jews at large, the ultimate message of this holiday was generally overshadowed by a mountain of blue and white wrapping paper and gelt wrappers. Ultimately, Hanukkah is a holiday about dedication and rededication; the “story” of Chanukkah concludes with the victorious Maccabees rededicating the Temple in Jerusalem following their victory over the Syrian-Greeks. I have often said that Judaism is a religion of reminders through symbolism, and Chanukkah is no exception - it is a helpful reminder for us to rededicate ourselves to what is most important to ourselves and to our community. During my first 6 months as Community & Youth Engagement Coordinator here at Temple Sinai, it has become abundantly clear to me how dedicated this community is to its young people. Throughout my experiences with youth departments in Southern California, I have seen communities declare time and time again how important their kids and teens are. However, when it comes time to reflect that rhetoric with action, they drag their feet. I have been beyond impressed that at every opportunity Temple Sinai has broken that mold, which has allowed me and our Youth Department to hit the ground running. Within our first 4 months, we have created 3 separate age-specific youth groups for our kids in 3rd-12th grade (SVTY, SVTY678, & Mini-SVTY); we sent a delegation of 10 high schoolers to the first NFTY retreat of the school year, dwarfing delegations from synagogues much more conveniently located; we opened our brand-new Youth Lounge, featuring couches, video games, a smart tv, an air hockey and ping pong table, an arcade-style basketball hoop and study spaces for our teens to call home. For most synagogues, that is several years of progress - however, Temple Sinai is not most synagogues. During this season of dedication, I challenge us as a community to further rededicate our efforts to our future through our youth programs. We have made incredible progress in its infancy, and I am so excited to see what we can accomplish in this coming year. Our synagogue motto is “Your Family. Your Home.” - this department, as well as the Youth Lounge, has become the embodiment of that motto for our next generation of Jewish leaders. I have been blessed to witness a family develop amongst our teenagers and our kids, and I have seen our new youth lounge become their home away from home. Most synagogues cannot say that they get well over a dozen teenagers to show up on various school nights just to hang out; nor can most synagogues say that they have overwhelmed teenagers who come by to write their college applications (and ask their beloved advisor to edit them). I repeat, Temple Sinai is not most synagogues. With the continued dedication and support of the community and its individuals, our future looks very bright indeed.

L’Shalom, Alex Gregory Weisz

From Your Sisterhood I am absolutely delighted to report that our Attic Sale was a success. Much appreciation to all our volunteers who gave of their time and energy to keep us organized. We couldn’t have done this without you. A special thank you to Eileen and Bob Levin who took charge and kept everything running smoothly. Your dedication is amazing. Our annual Paid Up Membership Luncheon, on November 12th was attended by over 100 women and it was so wonderful to bring so many new members into our Sisterhood. The Committee, headed by Sheryl Honig, did a marvelous job of planning and contacting so many. We want to thank Sabrina Olsen for entertaining us, and Marty Hagans for educating us. It was a wonderful opportunity for Sisterhood to share an afternoon of food and fun. The invitation to our Annual Chanukah Pot Luck Dinner is in this Shofar. Please let me know that you are going to celebrate with us and, if so, what delicious food item you are planning to share. Remember that the Gift Shop is open before services on Friday and on Sunday mornings for your shopping pleasure. Please support Sisterhood by buying your Chanukah gifts at our Shop. If you have any special needs or requests, you can leave a message at the Temple office and we will be happy to try to accommodate you. Third Annual Poker Tournament On November 5th, Temple Sinai held its third Annual Poker Tournament at the home of its co-chairs, Marsha Genard and Vera Ginsburg. The 30 tournament players ranged from novices to professionals. They were members of the Temple and/or were friends of the hostesses. Everyone seemed to have a great time. The event was again very successful thanks to the hard work of the committee. The event was won by Allyn Jaffrey Schulman, a WSOP bracelet winner. Art Greenberg was the lone Temple Sinai member to cash at the end, placing 3rd. The success of the tournament can be measured by the number of participants who have played in the previous tournaments and returned for more. The Committee is already talking about a 4th tournament in late 2018.

The 5th annual Chanukah Giving Tree project will start on November 17th and run through December 5th. This project helps brighten up the holidays for families in need by providing food, clothing, toys and groceries. There will be volunteers in the lobby on Friday nights and Sunday mornings to provide information and assist with donations.

Bereavement Group The Bereavement Group will meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month at Temple Sinai from 10:30 am - 12:00 noon. We strive to help those who have lost their loved ones to try to go on as well as possible making a new life by themselves while meeting new people in the group who are attempting to do the same thing. The facilitator for the group is my friend Debby Goldman. Debby volunteered and is doing a wonderful job. We also get together weekly for coffee at 10:00 am on Saturday mornings at Leones in Tivoli and also plan either lunch or dinner for anyone wanting to come. Please call me with any questions you may have or if you know someone who might benefit from coming. You can give them my phone number. Myrna Brown 702-804-9910

What’s ahead in our Torah? December 1-2 Vayishlach

Jacob leaves Lavan a wealthy man with two wives! On his way to meet Esau he dreams and wrestles “someone,” who changes his name to Israel.

December 8-9 Vayeshev

Joseph, the favored son, is sold into slavery by his brothers. The story of Judah and Tamar is injected into this portion. Why?
