Dear Congregants,

President’s Message

As I am sure you have noticed over the past year I do not write long articles; however, this one will be shorter than most. This is primarily due to the fact that I was on vacation for part of July and July is normally a relatively quiet month. July is the beginning of the second year of my term as President of Temple Sinai. I am looking forward to an exciting year, however, one that will be challenging. I am pleased to welcome our new board member Vera Ginsburg and to welcome Ilana Shapiro who is assuming the position of First Vice-President. I would like to thank Mort Labovitz for his tenure on the Board. Also, I would like to thank Ivan Lambert for his service as First Vice-President. Ivan will continue as a of the member of the Board. Hopefully we will be able to retain Mort to do some special projects. The summer is normally a relatively slow time from an activity stand point. However, it is busy for the staff and volunteers. We have begun working on various projects for the High Holy Days. This is an extremely difficult and time consuming group of tasks that take approximately three months to complete. We are well on our way and ahead of schedule. We are also working on some maintenance and refurbishing in time for the beginning of Religious School and the opening of the fall semester of Shenker Academy. Some very exciting news is that we have hired a Youth and Community Engagement Coordinator who started on July 5. His name is Alex Weisz and we are anxiously awaiting his getting involved at Temple Sinai. Alex has a great deal of experience working with youth. He will be able to get our youth groups moving forward and hopefully create an environment that will engage our youth and help them to embrace Judaism. When you see Alex please say hello.

We also have a new administrative assistant, Melissa Sirkel, who has been with us approximately six weeks. Melissa is very pleasant and seems to be adapting very quickly to her new job. The next time you are in the Temple office, please stop in and introduce yourself to Melissa. Shalom Les Sherman President

A Bigger Welcome To Families Than Ever Before

August 2017

It’s with great excitement that we welcome our newest members of staff, Alex Weisz, to the team. Alex will be our Community & Youth Engagement Coordinator. His primary responsibility will be to make families with school age kids feel even more part of the congregation. He will work alongside Heather, Dr. Knafo and myself to deepen the engagement of young people and their families.

Having just returned from summer camp, I know the value of young people who are fired up and proud of their Jewish identity. I spent time with teenagers who had come through the N.F.T.Y. framework (www.nfty.org), and had used part of their High School experience to study in Israel and who were determined to be the next generation of Jewish leaders. It was my privilege in July to be the Rabbi for the C.I.T. (Counselors in Training) group at Camp Newman and see them get excited about nurturing the hopes and dreams of their young camper charges. Alex is here to cultivate all of that within Temple Sinai by getting to know the young families from an early age and building a community for them within our community. Please make him welcome and please respond to his requests for support, either by going to programs or ensuring your kids go to them! This is a wonderful new commitment to our families by Temple Sinai and we all wish Alex so much success and look forward to supporting him in his endeavors. L’shalom Rabbi Malcolm Cohen

Cantorial Soloist Heather Klein Summer is almost over. Its seems to be happy and sad. The summer has held a lot of learning opportunities away from the synagogue to learn new melodies and tools to bring back to our community. Hava Nashira in June, the ACC convention at the end of June, and this month I will head to an educators conference called NewCaje. I am excited and honored to teach a workshop about bringing Yiddish melody into religious institutions and I will be performing a preview of my new show Shanghai Angel. I am sad that the summer feeling of learning cannot continue throughout the year, but I am very happy that the cooler temperatures will come. Besides conventions, I am excited to welcome our new Youth outreach coordinator Alex Weisz. When you have a chance, please get to know him. We are all so excited about all that he will bring to our community and our youth! Also, I am excited to say that in June we had a wonderfully successful turnout for our initial Happy Hour for Sinai Young Adults. We are looking forward to more events throughout the calendar year starting back in the Fall. Also, we look forward to another 4 Shabbat after Dark services taking place for our Young adult community throughout the upcoming year. Lastly, as our young learners are starting to come back to Religious School, I hope some of them will consider joining our Youth Choir. If any of them are interested in playing their instrument at assemblies, they should be in touch with me.

From Dr. Sharon Knafo Summer at Shenker Academy brings much excitement and educational value to our children. The thematic structure of the summer camp enables us, the educators, to focus each week on a different facet of summer type of activities, from beach and sports, to dinosaurs, space, books and cooking. Our themes are planned to be within the classrooms activities, as well as out of the classroom activities ground, media room, music room and art room. Parallel to our busy Shenker summer, we are planning our next school year at Shenker and at our Religious School. This planning includes touring the facility with prospective parents, as well as meeting with all our teachers, and revising the curriculum for 2017-18. We just acquired a new program for the 7th graders focused on creating a personal Yad for their Torah reading now and in the future. As always, we are looking for volunteers for the PTO at Shenker and the Religious School. If you would like to help in the next school year, please contact Kim at school@templesinailv.org. Wishing you a continuing joyful summer, Dr. Sharon R. Knafo Education Director

It’s going to be another great year! Stay cool! Heather

Alex Weisz

Bar Mitzvah of Alex Minkoff

My name is Alex Weisz, and it is my honor to be your new Community & Youth Engagement Coordinator here at Temple Sinai. I was born and raised in Pasadena, California, and I am a recent graduate of Loyola Marymount University in West Los Angeles. While working on my studies, I have had several years of experience working in informal and supplementary Jewish education. Due to my Southern California upbringing, I am a diehard Dodger and Lakers fan. My favorite TV show is Game of Thrones and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and you can usually find me listening to Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, Chance the Rapper, and Drake. I am the He volunteers his time feeding the less fortunate at the Las proud uncle of an adorable 9 month old named Oliver, Vegas Rescue Mission and 3 Square Food Bank, has collected whose younger sibling is due in November. pet supplies for the various shelters around town, in lieu of receiving birthday presents, and is currently collecting socks As my new title would suggest, I am extremely passionate and underwear to donate to the Rescue Mission to help the about the Jewish community and the young people that homeless population. We are proud of the young man Alex is represent our future. Studies have shown that young Jews who participate in Jewish summer camps and youth groups becoming! are considerably more likely to prioritize synagogue membership and lay leadership once they reach financial independence - and that is exactly why I’m here, to bring many of these opportunities to the youth of Temple Sinai. The passion that has sparked my career in Jewish programming originates from my own experiences in summer camps and as a leader in my own youth group growing up in Pasadena. I look forward to re-chartering a NFTY chapter here at Temple Sinai, allowing a space for our teens to make Temple Sinai their second home by taking ownership of their own program - I'm just here to help them along the way. Alex Minkoff will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on August 19, 2017. He lives with his parents and older brother in Las Vegas, where he was born. He attends Sig Rogich Middle School and will begin his 8th grade year shortly. He has been in accelerated classes since elementary school and continues to earn A’s and B’s, with a little push from his parents! He is an avid sports fan with a passion for baseball, which he has played since he was 6 years old. He also enjoys a bit of cooking and drawing.

I am beyond excited for this new adventure - everyone here has been extremely inviting and welcoming throughout this process for me, and I am very thankful for it! I can be found in the Admin. office (first office on the left), or you can contact me at A_Weisz@TempleSinaiLV.org, or by phone at (702)2545110x108. I can't wait to see what we can accomplish together! L’Shalom, Alex Weisz

Beautiful Timeline Addition to the Library

The month of Elul is rapidly

approaching; and that means Rosh Hashanah is close at hand!

A beautiful and useful addition has been posted onto our Library wall. It is a "Brief Timeline of the Jewish People", from the birth of Abraham (1813 BCE) to the present day. The Timeline is the result of months of work by seven Temple Sinai scholars whose names are posted on the Timeline. Multiple sources for the information were used. Conflicting dates were resolved by the group members' deliberation. When did Masada fall to the Romans? When did the nation of Khazaria become a Jewish country? When was the Exodus? When did the Red Sea part? Expansion of some of the entries will be posted in a notebook already begun. It has been placed on our Library shelves in the "History" section. Temple Sinai members are encouraged to expand or comment on any of the Timeline entries by sending an email message to Dr. Jeffrey S. Kaiser at jeff@vfi-nevada.org containing all three of the following: 1) the Timeline date, 2) your comment (or expansion), and 3) your bibliographical or web source reference for your information. Appropriate comments will be included in the notebook.

It’s time to start thinking about hearing the sound of the shofar. We are gathering those who want to be part of our Shofar Choir.

Interested? Contact Les Gilbert, Chair of your Ritual Committee at mrgilbertmath@hotmail.com

Be part of the great mitzvah of enabling people to hear the sound of the shofar!

Lifelong Learning At Temple Sinai Temple Sinai is a warm and welcoming Reform Jewish community engaged in lifelong learning, social justice, and soulful worship. Lifelong Learning (Torah) – Wherever you find yourself, we want to help you get to the next stage of your Jewish journey. We offer formal and informal opportunities for learners to find genuine meaning and answers to keenly felt moral questions and personal issues within the Jewish tradition. You will notice that we have a wonderful range of events from stand-alone events to three-session mini-courses to a two-year in- depth study. For this congregation, the social experience of learning is extremely important alongside the content of our study. We hope that you will deepen your connections to our heritage and each other as you move to the next stage of your journey. For more information on specific classes, please visit www.templesinailv.org.

What’s ahead in our Torah? August 4-5 V’etchanan Moses pleads with G-d to let him enter the Land of Israel with the people, but G-d once more refuses his request. The covenant at Sinai and the Ten Commandments are recalled. Moses speaks the words of the Shema, the credo of Judaism, and commands Israel to show their love for Adonai and keep G-d’s laws and ordinances.

Tzedakah Committee The Temple Sinai Tzedakah Committee is asking for volunteers to help with various projects which will enhance the services we offer.
