ADVENT —A TIME TO PREPARE
Vince LaTona Director, Music & Liturgy
For all of us the “To -Do” list for the next few weeks is completely full. There’s shopping to do, presents to wrap, Christmas cards to write, decorations to put up, parties and get -togethers to attend, the list goes on and on, and on.
But today we enter a new church year with the season of Advent, and there’s more to it than that. Advent is a time to prepare, to make ourselves ready to receive the Christ Child. Advent calls us to wait, to hope, to prepare and to give freely to those less fortunate than ourselves. Advent also encourages us to renew and strengthen our spiritual lives through prayer, service, and reconciliation. Advent is a season of wonder, promise and hope. Wonder in the universal greatness of our Lord Jesus, hope in His coming to us as an Infant King, and the promise of salvation through His dying on the cross.
During this Advent Season St. Anthony on the Lake offers many different opportunities to help enhance our spiritual preparation and wellbeing. These include:
• Daily Advent Devotional Books are available in the Gathering Space for $2.00 each. New this year, Slowing Down to the Speed of Joy by Matthew Kelly for $5.00
• Nicholas of Myra: Saint and Santa: Thursday, December 4, at 11 am and 6 pm. Join Al McCauley for a special presentation that explores St. Nicholas’ historical life and legacy.
• Reflections on the Advent Seasonal Scriptures: Tuesdays at 11 am and 6 pm, continues December 2, 9, and 16.
• Giving Tree: December 6 and 7 in the Gathering Space. Pick up a tag and return your unwrapped gift.
• Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary: A Holy Day of Obligation. Monday, December 8; Masses are at 8 am (with the school students) and at 7 pm.

• Christmas Quilt Sale to Benefit Our Sister Parish, Santisimo Sacramento, in Peru: December 13 and 14 in Fellowship Hall after all Masses.
• “O Come Little Children” for Kids: Sunday, December 14 at 10:15 am in the Parish Life Center.
• A Special Week of Adoration: December 15-19. Expanded hours of Adoration hosting the last Monstrance blessed by St. Pope John II.

Communion to the Homebound
Do you know someone who will miss weekend Mass due to illness? Would you like to take Communion to them?
Beginning November 30, the First Sunday of Advent, pyx (the small container used to transport the Eucharist) will be available in the Gathering Space for you to do so. The process is simple.
• Before Mass stop by the Eucharistic Ministry station located near the vesting sacristy. Sign out a pyx and receive an instruction card.
• Take the pyx into church with you. At Communion time take the pyx with you. Once you have received communion, hold the open pyx up. The Eucharistic Minister will place a host in it. Then close the container.
• If you choose, you may receive the cup, then return to your seat.
• After Communion, the priest will ask you to stand and receive a blessing. After Mass, the Eucharist should be delivered immediately to the homebound. This is important. There should be no delay in delivering the Eucharist.
• The following week return the pyx to church.
If you would like more information, contact Vince LaTona in the Music and Liturgy Office, latonav@stanthony.cc or (262) 691-1173 ext. 1109.

FROM OUR SCHOOL: Music is Opening the Door!
Indra Brusubardis Music Teacher
Hello, my name is Indra Brusubardis, and I am excited to be the new music teacher. This is my first year at St. Anthony, and my 8th year as the voice lessons instructor for the Pewaukee High School choral program. I am also a Board Certified Music Therapist. I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts Music degree from UW -Milwaukee. I homeschooled our six children through high school and also managed their music education. They are all professional, college -degreed musicians. We still perform together as a family, despite busy schedules. I am a long -time choral singer and soloist and I truly cherished all my years in the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus, Milwaukee Choral Artists, Collegium Ladyes, and Waukesha Choral Union. I still sing in our Brusubardis Dzimtene Latvian Choir.
I am encouraged by the generous, helpful, faithful people that make up the SAL community. The students and I have been getting to know each other. It’s been a real treat to observe their unique personalities, and to see how they express themselves in the music classroom. We talk a lot about how we are one big team, how we help each other, and how we communicate our faith through our music. The kindergarten grades have all enjoyed playing wood blocks and rhythm sticks, singing to their stuffies, exploring movement with scarves, learning Bible verse songs, keeping the beat, and using their different voices (whispering, shouting, speaking, singing). The elementary and middle school grades began the year with a variety of movement activities, including “Sasha”, “Irish Stew,” “Apple Tree,” “Pass the Pumpkin,” or a very lively bucket passing game to the tune of “The Addams Family” theme song. Everyone has learned new songs, including canons, and my year -long goal for the middle schoolers is to solidify the “Dona Nobis Pacem” in canon. They will carry that song with them throughout their lives. We are blessed with a large rhythm and Orff instrument collection in the music room, and we will continue to utilize it throughout the year.
Since the middle of October, our music classes have been largely focused on Christmas concert preparations. This year's concert is entitled "For Unto Us a Child is Born," and will feature many treasured carols and songs. We will include some instruments on a few of the numbers, but largely, the students will use their voices to uplift us in song. I am extremely proud of their efforts! Each grade group will present unique elements: kindergartners will feature movement, grades 1, 2 and 3 will feature multiple verses and sophisticated lyrics, grades 4 and 5 will showcase their boomwhacker (percussion) skills, along with two other vocal selections,
next, the middle schoolers will sing two traditional and widely popular songs and feature a soloist, and finally, eighth graders will perform a showy mallet instrumental. We hope to see you all at the concert, December 10th at 6:00pm in the church, as we present “For Unto Us a Child
