How Gratitude Builds Stewardship

November is often called Gratitude Month. It is a time of thanksgiving and of generous sharing. Here at St. Anthony on the Lake:

• We celebrate Thanksgiving with a special Mass on Wednesday evening, November 26th at 7:00 pm;

• In light of our nation’s food crisis, we will be working closely with two of our Partners in Mercy, namely The MacCanon Brown Homeless Sanctuary and The People’s Table, to shore up their food pantries. Please see our parish website or bulletin for more information on how you can help;

• And we are celebrating our annual Stewardship Renewal at all the Masses this weekend. Having reflected upon the goodness of God and the many blessings we have received, we offer our pledged commitment to be good stewards of our prayer, time, talent, and treasure.

In 1992, the bishops of the United States published a pastoral letter entitled: “Stewardship: A Disciples Response.” The purpose of this letter was to introduce Catholics to a new way of understanding the importance of gratitude, accountability, and generosity as expressions of Christian discipleship. According to this pastoral letter, “A Christian is one who receives God’s gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends them in a responsible and accountable manner, shares them generously with others, and returns them to the Lord with increase.” In short, this letter reminds us that we are not owners. We are but trusted stewards.

Of course, gratitude is the foundation of good stewardship because it fosters the recognition that all that we have is a gift. A grateful heart sees blessings in the form of prayer, time, talent, and treasure. And this recognition leads to a joyful, responsible, and generous lifestyle of managing those gifts. In short, gratitude builds stewardship four different ways:

1. It changes PERSPECTIVE: Instead of viewing life and its resources as something to be possessed, gratitude reframes them as gifts to be received and cared for. This shift is key because to moves a person from a mindset of “what’s in it for me” to one of “how can I be a good manager of what I’ve been given.”

2. It encourages REPSONSIBILITY:

A grateful person is more likely to take responsibility for the gifts they have been given because they feel a sense of appreciation for them. This leads to developing those gifts and using them wisely rather than selfishly hoarding them.

3. It inspires GENEROSITY: When you are genuinely grateful for what you have, you are more inclined to share it with others. This generosity extends beyond financial gifts to include the giving of one’s time and talents to help others.

4. And finally, it fosters ACCOUNTABILITY:

A grateful steward understands that they will one day be asked to account for how they have used the gifts entrusted to them. This awareness motivates them to be good stewards with the understanding that their actions are a response to the generosity that have received.

As always, as I gather at table this Thanksgiving with cherished family and friends, with a heart filled with deep gratitude, I will be giving thanks to God for the wonderful blessing of serving this benevolent community. It is a great honor to shepherd this flock. We are so very blessed to have a faith -filled, educated, and dedicated faculty and staff, hard -working and passionate parishioners, prayerful and memorable liturgies, the faithful who support our Partners In Mercy, and the many resources to support these wonderful ministries and programs. May the continued generosity of our stewardship fill our hearts with hope and gratitude as we “open the door” to Christ and one another.

Blessings for bountiful Thanksgiving!

PRAYER AND WORSHIP

Communion to the Homebound

Do you know someone who will miss weekend Mass due to illness? Would you like to take Communion to them? Beginning November 30, the First Sunday of Advent, pyx (the small container used to transport the Eucharist) will be available in the Gathering Space for you to do so.

The process is simple. Before Mass stop by the Eucharistic Ministry station located near the vesting sacristy. Sign out a pyx and receive an instruction card. Take the pyx into church with you. At Communion time take the pyx with you. Once you have received communion, hold the open pyx up. The Eucharistic Minister will place a host in it. Then close the container. If you choose, you may receive the cup, then return to your seat.

After Communion, the priest will ask you to stand and receive a blessing. After Mass, the Eucharist should be delivered immediately to the homebound. This is important. There should be no delay in delivering the Eucharist.

Wednesday, Nov. 26 |7 pm

There is no Mass on Thanksgiving Day

The following week return the pyx to church. If you would like more information, contact Vince LaTona in the Music and Liturgy Office, latonav@stanthony.cc or (262) 691-1173 ext. 1109.

FROM OUR SCHOOL: Opening the Door!

The first trimester has been an exciting time for middle school students, and it is quickly wrapping up! It seems like just yesterday that the school year began and now, it is almost Thanksgiving.

Sixth grade has just finished learning about ancient India and its role in the development of early advancements in math and science. They learned about the religions of Hinduism and Buddhism, two of the oldest religions in the world. They now turn towards learning about the civilizations of ancient China and Japan.

Seventh grade recently began their unit on the United States and began reaching a specific state in the country. They are investigating the origins of the state’s name, the state’s history, and even some fun trivia facts about the state, including the state motto or state animals. This project is an exciting way for students to analyze the country they live in while also practicing their presentation and research skills.

Eighth grade just finished learning about the Thirteen Colonies and Revolutionary War. Students began the unit by working in groups to create their own colony, developing a map for the colony, and shifted their focus to learning about the push for independence from the British monarchy. Students learned about

the years of tension between the British Parliament and the Thirteen Colonies that resulted in the outbreak of war in 1775. Now, they will learn about the failure of the Articles of Confederation and the development of the U.S. Constitution.

Ultimately, the first trimester has been an exciting one! The sixth graders have done a tremendous job adjusting to middle school and the new challenges it brings. It has been fun watching the sixth grade join
