Monthly Memo

March dawns and as winter hopefully is on its way out the door, we welcome in spring and some exciting events here at the Center. To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we will be holding an ice cream social on March 17th. Our first overnight trip of the year is planned for May 2nd & 3rd to the Sight and Sound Theatre to see “Moses”. Tickets are now on sale, but you must pre-register before March 17th. Seats are limited, so I implore you to sign up as soon as possible or risk missing out on a wonderful visit to Lancaster. Our spaghetti dinner fundraiser will be April 19th, tickets are now on sale at the front desk. It promises to be a lovely evening of live music, raffles, and delicious food. I look forward to seeing everyone emerge from their winter hovels and come join in the fun!

Healthy Tip and Recipe

March is National Nutrition Month

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”. – Hippocrates. Staying healthy is something that we should be thinking about every day, but the purpose of nutrition month is to help the public become aware of the importance of good nutrition and a healthly eating plan. Nutrition is directly linked to chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, atherosclerosis, and hypertension. Diets that are high in added sugar, salt, saturated fat, and trans fat puts you at risk.

You can make small simple changes each day to reap the benefits of a healthier lifestyle.

1. Cut Back on Processed Food: Processed and prepackaged foods are loaded with sugar, salt, unhealthy fats, and chemicals our bodies do not recognize. They also lack fiber & most of the nutrients your body needs.

2. Fill Up On Vegetables & Fruits: When you sit down to a meal, be sure at least half of your plate is composed of colorful vegetables and fruits. Choose fruits or vegetables for snacks… they are also easy to take with you!

3. Be Aware of Portion Sizes: Most people consume much larger portions (and many more calories) than necessary. If you are finding it difficult to take normal portion sizes, try using a smaller plate.

4. Slow Down and Enjoy Your Food: Eating quickly and not properly chewing your food has a detrimental effect on your digestive tract and also leads to overeating. When you eat, do just that eat! Learn to slow down and enjoy the smell, taste, and texture of your food. Also, chew your food well. Before going back for more food, give your body a rest. It takes up to 20 minutes for your stomach to signal your brain that it is full.

5. Eat Only When You Are Hungry: During the winter months you tend to have less to do & are stuck indoors more. This often leads to “boredom eating” and a lot of extra calories your body does not need. Before you grab a snack, stop and take 3 deep breaths. Then ask yourself if you are truly hungry. If you are, choose something healthy and sit down to enjoy it. Do not eat food out of the package or in front of the television.

This is a quick and tasty snack you can make anytime. Top with nuts, fruit, or whatever you have on hand.

INGREDIENTS

 1 apple

 Peanut butter, almond butter, cream cheese, cottage cheese, etc

 Toppings of your choice (examples: sliced banana, berries, seeds, coconut, cinnamon)

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Core the apples and slice into thin slices

2. Spread each apple ring with nut butter, cream cheese, cottage cheese, etc.

3. Top with desired toppings
