Monthly Memo

April kicks off a couple of busy months here at the Center. There are a variety of upcoming events, some informative and some for fun. Celebrate spring and new beginnings with the first meeting of our Garden club on April 10th. The Chronic Disease Self Management Program still has seats available. This class will teach you to manage your or a loved one’s condition. I strongly recommend enrolling, it is informative, well structured, and incredibly beneficial.

If you’re looking for a delicious meal and an evening of conviviality, don’t miss our Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser on April 19th. I’ll be up to my eyeballs in noodles and boiling water, but I’ll make sure to give a wave from the kitchen. Ticket sales for our Mother’s Day Tea on May 13th are now available. This event was a huge success last year and we are excited to see it return. Lastly, our Art Exhibition returns at the end of May (check Page 6 for more details).

Healthy Tip and Recipe

April is Foot HealthAwareness Month

Healthy feet can help you stay mobile, balanced, and independent. However, aging takes a toll on your feet. Over time feet flatten, get wider, and have less cushioning. Problems such as bunions and foot pain can prevent you from being active.

There are several things you can do to keep your feet healthy and reduce the risk of health issues.

 Keep Your Feet Active:

 Put your feet up when you are sitting

 Stretch and wiggle your feet

 Get up and walk around often

 Prevent Foot Problems:

 Check your feet every day

 Wash your feet and use lotion every day

 Trim your toenails often

 Visit a podiatrist to treat corns, calluses, bunions, and other foot issues

 When buying shoes:

 Replace your shoes when the cushion inside is beginning to wear out

 Try to shop for shoes at the end of the day when your feet are bigger

 The shoes should feel good on both feet when you walk

 Be sure the shoes do not slide up & down on your heels or rub anywhere

 Visit a specialty shoe store to be fitted correctly

Your feet are the foundation of your body. Addressing foot conditions in a timely manner and taking time to be proactive about the health of your feet, you can ensure they keep you moving.

Lemon Thyme Chicken

Welcome spring with bright flavors and fresh ingredients. Try this simple chicken recipe from Taste of Home.

INGREDIENTS

 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

 1/2 teaspoon salt

 1/4 teaspoon pepper

 4 boneless skinless chicken breast halves (6 ounces each)

 2 tablespoons olive oil

 1 medium onion, chopped

 1 tablespoon butter

 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

 1 cup chicken broth

 3 tablespoons lemon juice

 2 tablespoons minced fresh thyme

INSTRUCTIONS

 In a small bowl, combine flour, salt and pepper. Set aside 4-1/2 teaspoons for sauce. Sprinkle remaining flour mixture over both sides of chicken.

 In a large nonstick skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add chicken; cook until juices run clear, 7-9 minutes on each side. Remove and keep warm.

3. In the same pan, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add onion; cook and stir until tender, 3-5 minutes. Stir in thyme and reserved flour mixture until blended. Gradually stir in broth and lemon juice, scraping up any browned bits from bottom of pan. Bring to a boil; cook and stir until thickened, about 2 minutes. Serve over chicken. Sprinkle with thyme.
