President’s Message

November 2024

Fall is arriving, and it’s a great time to get out and drive. We had our Fall Color Tour on Oct. 19th from St. Charles County to Hermann, MO. And it didn’t disappoint with a record-breaking turnout. The weather was perfect, Thierbach’s Orchards was packed, and seemed like everyone was simply wanting to be outside. Quite a large group made the trek and joined up with our colleagues from Columbia, MO to Shiloh, IL, and elsewhere, to meet during Octoberfest. So what else do we have going on in November?

Thirsty Thursday on Nov. 7th at 6:30-8:30 will be at the Wolf Cafe in Ballwin. This is a newer venue for us and very popular. Porsche Palooza is being held on Nov. 7th through the 10th in Eureka Springs, AR. This is put on by a partnership between the White River, Ozark and Cimarron Regions PCA. If you have not attended one of these, you owe it to yourself to go at least once. This is a low-stress three-day Porschefest with two days of longer tours, one day of short tours, a parade, a car show, tech sessions and casual banquets each night. Eureka Springs is a very picturesque, historic town full of quirky shops and restaurants. The entire area is very hilly and twisty and just made for Porsche tours. This is their 20th anniversary, too.

We will have a General membership meeting at the Center of Clayton on Nov. 13th at 6:30 pm, where everyone is welcome. Then on Saturday, Nov. 16th, we will have a drive to Oak & Front in Washington, MO. Always a nice drive. The Columbia Group is having a dinner at Dalia’s Mexican Grill on Nov. 17th.

Out annual Holiday Party is coming up at Westborough Country Club on Dec. 7th. See the article later in this newsletter for more information on how to sign up. This is our 65th anniversary as a Porsche Club, and this is significant in the big scheme of things. We are the 9th oldest Region out of the 145 in the US, so we have something to be proud of. And don’t forget, every one of you is a part of it.

Turn Clocks BACK

November 3rd

Iknow a lot of people are probably not very happy about it, but Central Standard Time returns, Sunday, Nov. 3rd. You might want to turn your clocks back 1 hour when you go to bed (if you go to bed) Saturday night, but at least you will get an extra hour of sleep on Sunday.

Thirsty Thursday Wolf Cafe

15480 Clayton Rd., Ballwin

6:30 p.m., November 7th, 2024

The holiday season is just weeks away when schedules fill with parties and year ending holiday events. Things get a little hectic, so now is the perfect time to take a deep breath and relax with your Porsche friends before charging into the holidays ahead. Join us for one last Thirsty Thursday in 2024 (we skip Thirsty Thursdays in December because it falls so close to our Regional Holiday Gala). Prepare for the busy season ahead with a relaxing evening at 6:30 pm, November 7th at Wolf Cafe, 15480 Clayton Road in Ballwin (just west of Kehrs Mill Rd.).

Wolf Cafe is a lively spot with great food focused on locally sourced American cuisine and live music in the heart of West County. The Wolf Cafe has parking spots on all sides with extra space in the rear of the building. We’ll be ordering off the menu, so come with a hearty appetite.

There will be no official meeting or agenda associated with this event. Just an evening of sharing great food and beverages surrounded by your Porsche friends. This event is for St. Louis Region members and sponsored guests. Reservations are required, so look for the event on

www.msreg.com/events/thirsty-thursday-at-wolf-cafe-pcast-louis-social-683416

Fall Drive to Washington, MO

Saturday, November 16th, 2024

Join us for a leisurely fall drive as we wind our way through parts of the Lewis & Clarke Trail and some of the best back roads in our area to the charming riverfront city of Washington, Missouri. Our destination is the locally owned and popular Oak & Front Kitchen and Bar that was featured as one of our tour destinations during the 2023 Treffen Gateway to the West. Oak & Front had such a good experience with the Treffen Tour that they were excited about hosting our members again.

This charming establishment features a broad menu with local wines, craft brews and great food. They have indoor and outdoor seating , which overlooks the Missouri River.

We are meeting at the West Commuter Lot at 9:30 am, on the southwest corner of Highway 94 and 40/64 in St. Charles. Be careful, there are two lots, one on the East side of Highway 94 and ours on the West. You must enter the lot from Highway K, one mile West of the lot. We suggest gassing up and visiting the rest room before you arrive. After the 9:30 am driver’s meeting, we will depart at 10:00 am and will arrive in Washington at approximately 11:30 - 11:45 am, where everyone will order off the menu.

After lunch, you are free to shop around in Washington and return home at your leisure.

Any questions, please contact Ric Smith at ricsmith@stl.pca.org or 816-730-1952.

CPG Dinner Meeting

5:30 pm, Sunday, Nov. 18th

Dalia Mexican Grill, Columbia, MO

Once mid-November rolls around, it gets a little more challenging to pick dates with good driving weather, so our mid-Missouri members turn their planning from ‘Drive and Dine’ to Dinner gatherings. The Columbia Porsche Group kicks off it’s dinner meeting season with a November 18th casual dinner gathering at Dalia’s Mexican Grill at 1400 Cinnamon Hill in Columbia, MO. Dalia’s is located at the NE intersection of US 63 and Stadium Blvd.

Join the evening of Porsche friendship and great food at 5:30 pm on Sunday, Nov. 18th. The hectic holiday season is right around the corner. Take a break now to relax in preparation for the Holiday and Year-end Rush ahead. Look for more details and RSVP on www.msreg.com in early November.

EV’s are here to stay!

While there are still many dedicated gearheads who continue to wish that electric vehicles will go away, the numbers around the world indicate that electric vehicles are here to stay. For the first time, there is now one nation where electric vehicles outnumber gasoline powered vehicles. Norway is the first country where there are more electric vehicles registered than gasoline powered vehicles. As of this summer, there were more than 754,300 electric vehicles licensed in Norway - just slightly overshadowing the 753,900 gasoline powered vehicles licensed to drive the roads of Norway. Considering the cold temperatures that grip much of Norway much of the year, it is remarkable that so many Norwegian drivers are plugging in instead of filling the tank. But then again, Norwegian drivers are definitely a different breed. For years, Norwegian drivers have depended on DIESEL as their first choice for power. Diesel vehicles still outnumber both electric and gasoline powered vehicles registered to drive Norway’s highways. There are just under 1 MILLION diesel vehicles registered with the Norwegian Road Federation - Norway’s version of their DMV. The Norwegian government is now more confident than ever that it might be possible to achieve its goal of ensuring all NEW cars sold in Norway are zero-emission vehicles by their 2030 goal.

Gathering on the Eastside

St. Louis Region stretches over quite a bit of territory - from mid-Missouri eastward all across the state of Illinois to the Indiana border...from Hannibal all the way down to the Missouri boot heel and the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. But the majority of our members are naturally concentrated in the St. Louis Metro area. We do encourage satellite groups near the fringes of our Region to organize their own social gatherings to spread the Porsche fellowship in their area. Finding venues to host those events can be a challenge. We naturally rely on our members to tell us about their favorite places for casual dining and socializing, and that usually leads us to stay within the Metro area, usually on the west side of the river.

We don’t mean to ignore our members on the east side of the Metro area, but most of us are not familiar with the good places for a drink and a quick meal. Thankfully, we have a few members who know the Metro-East and recently suggested Global Brew Pub in Shiloh, IL, thus leading to our Global Brew Thirsty Thursday casual gathering. We were quite pleased with the reception of the east side location and the resulting impromptu car show on the Shiloh parking lot. St. Louis Region members took over the outdoor patio for a relaxed evening of food, beverages and fun. It was a great turnout... and a enjoyable evening watching the sun set over the Metro area. Thanks to Mike and Arlene Molina for scouting out this great venue for St. Louis Region. Do you have a favorite East side watering hole for a relaxing evening with friends? Please let us know.

Porsches in the Park

Central Park in Chesterfield

October 6th

Porsches in the Park is a relatively new reoccurring event on the St. Louis Region calendar, but in two years, it has already become one of the Region’s most popular events. The idea couldn’t be simpler - just drive to park in the morning to gather with your fellow Porsche enthusiasts to enjoy the great cars, the stories of Porsche adventures and fun, the brisk Fall weather and throw in a few donuts and coffee.

Nature truly smiled on this year’s Porsches in the Park with cool temperatures, bright, cloudless skies and plenty of colorful Porsches to paint the palate with popular Porsche colors. This year, we made an effort to encourage ‘more doors’ in the parking lot to bring out more 4-door Macans, Cayennes, Panameras and Taycans to join the 911s, Caymans, Boxsters and vintage Porsches that so often gather at our Regional events. Special thanks to all our 4-door friends who joined our ranks - many for the first time. Our events, whether they be on the parking lot...on the highways...or on the track are always open to ALL Porsches. We hope to see you return to our ranks in the events ahead.

And special thanks to Greg and Nancy Goodman who made sure we had plenty of coffee and donuts to get our day started with a flavorful jolt of caffeine and sugar.

We look forward to seeing you again at our next tour or social event. Don’t miss out on the fun!

‘Electrifying’ Garden Soiree at Porsche St. Louis

Porsche St. Louis hosted an “Electric Garden Soiree” the evening of October 10th to reveal the latest new all electric Porsche. At 7:00 PM, the Macan Electric shown in the color ‘Provence’

was revealed to a smartly dressed crowd.

Just outside, there were two more Macan Electrics on display with varied options amongst the three. The model range starts at $75,300 and grows

quickly from there. Of the three vehicles shown, the MSRP ranged from $95,250 to $102,000. One of them was a very popular color with the crowd called Copper Ruby Metallic. One example of the Macan Electric Turbo in their inventory is listed for $130,760, and you know there are still more options to add.

The range is estimated at just over 308 miles, but those in the know say ordinary driving should prove to be closer to 350 miles. The vehicle’s curb weight of 5,004 lbs will scoot from zero to sixty in 5.4 seconds with Launch Control and will continue to a top speed of 137 miles per hour. Under optimum charging conditions, the battery can be charged in 21 minutes. However, for most owners charging at home, a full charge from empty can take up to 11.5 hours. Ordinary charging can be easily accommodated over night.

Having just bought my 2-door Porsche in July, I definitely need to wait a while before pursuing another. If my 911 is the fun weekend car, then the Macan Electric is the perfect garage mate for the commute to work and the weekday errands. I’m certain it will replace the monotony of the workday routine with at least a smile while traveling between stops.

Fall Color Tour to Hermann

Saturday, Oct. 19th, 2024

The weather was a little cool, but picture-perfect when we gathered in the commuter lot, ready for the start of our annual tour to Hermann, MO. This year’s tour included some of mid-Missouri’s best roads, and lunch at the pavilion in Hermann’s Riverfront Park. The Fall Color Tour has been getting more and more popular, and now consists of multiple driving groups going to the lunch, and some just going for the drive.

Sign-up for this tour fills quickly, and this year was no exception. Before I knew it, we had over 120 members signed up and eager to get on the road. We had members coming from as far away as Shiloh, IL and Columbia, MO joining in the fun. We started in Weldon Springs and drove south on Hwy 94 for the start of the tour. The Fall colors were looking good and traffic was light.

We made a rest stop at Thierbach’s Orchard in Marthasville on Hwy 47. They have a great selection of locally grown apples, salsas, caramel corn, pumpkins and gourds! The petting zoo and tasty treats are very popular. From the looks of it, there was quite a traffic jam at the apple cider donut window, too. Those donuts are made on the spot and are very tasty.

Sue Sullivan

Continuing on to Hermann, light traffic and lots of freshly paved roads made for an easy drive, and the colors were just starting to peek out. Making it into downtown Hermann, we were greeted by fire engines blocking off Main Street. What the Hay! That’s where we were supposed to turn. Traffic was being routed right into the park where we were supposed to go, and unfortunately it made parking a little more challenging. But, at least we weren’t

involved in the incident that required the emergency vehicles in the first place. So we had to wiggle around the block and sneak into the Riverfront park.

special sugar cookie with our St. Louis Region emblem on it. Pretty fancy, eh! Both the food and customer service were exceptional. A big Thank You goes out to Tammy, the Director of Tourism, for helping us secure the pavilion and getting extra tables, right in the middle of Octoberfest, no less.

Our members from mid-Missouri were already there, and Allen and Kim Maddy had lunch set out for us. Our box lunch was catered by Laura at Sugar ‘N Spice Bakery, and they did a great job accommodating our large group. Lunch options included choice of sandwiches and sides, and a

After the lunch, many people visited the other attractions that are abundant in downtown Hermann. We were thankful for the great weather and great company. Also thanks go out to everyone in the Club who pitched in and helped with the Lead and Sweep car duties, as we had to break it up into manageable groups. The drive to Hermann seems to be a perfect length...it’s not too short and not too long with a good rest stop in the middle, and it doesn’t take up the entire day, unless you want it to. See you next year.

Thank you,

Salzburg, AustriaHistoric Town with Deep Porsche Roots

Veteran

St. Louis Region members Gail and Gary Griffin do a lot of travelling in retirement ...some as part of Gary’s auto consultancy business and a lot to play golf at many of the world’s most interesting links. Gail and Gary recently shared a look at a visit to Salzburg, Austria - a town with deep Porsche roots and the site of extraordinary power in the Porsche world. In the early days of Porsche, Ferdinand Porsche concentrated on the engineering and production of Porsche products, while his sister Louise took over marketing of Porsche products. Louise eventually married into the Peich family creating the tie between the Porsche and Peich families that continues today as the two families control Porsche Holdings SA - the company that controls the entire Volkswagen family of auto companies, including Porsche.

Salzburg continues to play a pivotal roll in the world of Porsche as the home of Porsche Holding Salzburg - the company that control the distribution of VW / Porsche products to more than 530 dealers in 29 countries spread over Europe, China, South America and Asia. About the only place Porsche Salzburg does not control the supply of Porsches is North America.

The Porsche name can be found all around Salzburg including one of the city’s top hotels, Iris Porsche. It’s not really Porsche owned, but operates under the Porsche name. They use the Porsche name because in Austria ‘Porsche’ stands for quality.

But music lovers probably prefer to think of Salzburg first as the birthplace of Mozart, and the town is littered with statues and markers commemorating the birth of the city’s musical son, including outside the building where the composer was born on the second floor.

Salzburg is a centuries old city filled with classic architecture and scenic buildings and settings. Movie buffs might even stumble on a few familiar sites such as the Abbey Church of St. Michael.... Does it look familiar?

Think back to the wedding of Capt. Von Trapp and Maria in “Sound of Music”.

Thanks to Gail and Gary for sharing sharing the sites of Salzburg.

Updating Our Bylaws

In accordance to our Regional By-laws, any changes to our Bylaws must be approved by a 2/3 vote of those attending a Regional General Membership meeting. For years, our Region’s November meeting has been designated as a General Membership Meeting because it is when nominations for those to be placed on the ballot to serve the Region in the year ahead are opened on the floor of the meeting for anyone to nominate someone for election to the Board.

This year, the agenda of the November General Membership Meeting is being expanded to address the proposed changes to our Bylaws as printed on the following pages. A vote on the Approval of the changes will be held at our November General Membership Meeting to be held November 13th at the Center of Clayton Community Center north of Shaw Park in Clayton.

We encourage you to review the updated Bylaws, and come to the November meeting to cast your vote and make your voice heard.

No additional regional Dues are collected by the St Louis Region at this time. If it is deemed necessary to collect regional dues, regional dues will be set by the Region Board of Directors and will require a 2/3rds majority approval by the Regional board of directors.

Section 6 - Membership Year

A. The membership year shall be determined by the By-Laws of PCA; however, members shall not be dropped from regional membership until the St. Louis Region is notified by the National Club.

Taming the Dragon: A Boxster’s Tale

Introduction

The alluring curves of the Tail of the Dragon.

Anything with the name “Dragon” in it evokes a sense of mystery, danger, and allure. The Tail of the Dragon is no exception. As a car enthusiast, the road’s reputation precedes it—an 11-mile stretch of U.S. Route 129 near the Tennessee-North Carolina border, boasting 318 curves, and promising an unforgettable driving experience.

As I set out on this journey, I couldn’t help but imagine what it might feel like to be a young Na’vi beginning their flight of passage trial, setting out to tame a banshee. In the world of Pandora, this rite of passage symbolizes bravery, connection, and harmony. Tackling this adventure, with my "new to me" Porsche 981 Boxster as my steed, my hope was that this legendary Dragon would feel like my own rite of passage, a union of man and machine in a test of skill, precision, and trust.

Taming the Dragon

From the moment I saw the sign warning "MOTORCYCLES HIGH CRASH AREA NEXT 11 MILES", I knew this wasn’t just another drive. The Tail of the Dragon has distinct features that have earned colorful names over the years. The road’s 318 curves are so memorable that sections have their own monikers, giving you an idea of what to expect—or what to fear. The first real challenge, fittingly named “Beginner’s End,” comes right at the start. This is a reminder that if you’re not careful, you could end your run before it even begins. It’s as if the Dragon gives you one chance to prove you’re ready.

From there, each turn becomes its own challenge, with ominous names like “The Whip,” “Brake or Bust Bend,” and “Carousel Corner,” each one carrying the weight of the many drivers who’ve tried—and sometimes failed—to tame them. Every curve presents its own test, with the road demanding respect and focus the entire way. The road twisted and turned like the serpent it was named after. There were only a few straightaways that offered brief moments to catch my breath before plunging back into the next curve.

Navigating the Dragon’s relentless switchbacks felt like an art form. The Boxster’s agility and balance made each turn feel fluid, but it also reminded me of the focus and precision required to tame such a beast. This wasn’t a road for the faint-hearted; it was for those willing to embrace the challenge, to feel the potential of their car as it danced through the curves.

My Porsche 981 Boxster, ready to conquer the Dragon.

The Boxster’s mid-engine layout played a crucial role in navigating the relentless curves. I could feel the weight distribution working in my favor, allowing for tighter turns and a more planted feel. Every time I turned the wheel, the car gave feedback that encouraged me to push my limits further. The roar of the flat-six engine behind me was an exhilarating reminder of the power I had at my disposal. However, the road didn’t test the limits of the car, but rather my limits behind the wheel.

With each passing mile, I became more attuned to the rhythm of the road, like a seasoned skier finding their rhythm on a challenging downhill run. The connection between me and the Boxster grew stronger, and the fearsome Dragon no longer seemed untamable—it was becoming part of the journey, not the adversary.

A Dragon with Bite: Realities of the Tail

The Tail of the Dragon is no joke. While it offers an exhilarating drive, it also demands respect from anyone who dares to tackle its 318 curves.

Driving the Tail of the Dragon isn’t just about handling the road—it’s also about dealing with unexpected challenges. One moment you might be rounding a sharp curve with total focus, and the next, you’re greeted by a family of wild turkeys casually walking across the road. Wildlife is unpredictable here, and while these feathered residents might seem amusing, they serve as a reminder that anything can happen on this road.

A surprise on the road: Wild turkeys remind drivers to stay alert and embrace the unexpected.

Another reality that hits hard is the unpredictability of other drivers. Some oncoming vehicles, especially those unfamiliar with the route, can struggle to stay in their lane, forcing you to stay alert for drivers veering over the double yellow line. With blind corners and tight spaces, this makes defensive driving just as important as enjoying the thrill of the Tail. Whether it’s wildlife or inattentive drivers, the Tail of the Dragon always has a way of keeping you on edge, demanding constant focus.

During my run, I saw firsthand the consequences of underestimating the Dragon—a Volkswagen GTI spun off the road and hit a mountain wall, a stark reminder that drivers can be caught off guard by its challenges.

At the nearby Deal’s Gap T-shirt Shack Store, I came across the infamous “Wall of Woe”, a sobering memorial to the drivers who were devoured by the Dragon. The wall is a powerful reminder that while the road is thrilling, it’s not without risk. Every curve must be handled with care, and pushing your limits here is a gamble you might not win.

The Beauty Behind the Beast

The stunning scenery flanking the Tail of the Dragon.

Yet, amidst the challenges, the natural beauty of the surroundings reminded me that this adventure is about more than just mastering the curves; it’s about the joy of driving and the moments that unfold along the way. For all its intensity, the Tail of the Dragon is flanked by some of the most beautiful natural scenery the eastern United States has to offer. Dense forests line the road, with the occasional break in the trees offering stunning views of the Smoky Mountains. It was a reminder that the Dragon’s lair was not only challenging but also remarkably beautiful.

A Photographer’s Paradise

I had heard that photographers would be stationed along the route, capturing cars and motorcycles as they navigate the curves. This allowed me to focus on the drive, knowing that I could later purchase some action shots online. I imagined myself navigating the bends and hoped that the car would look its best. This is when I started to think—I wish there was a car wash just before the Dragon. After all, traveling through the backroads means plenty of bugs and road grime, and who doesn’t want their car to shine in those epic photos?

As I pushed through the tight corners, I wondered when I would spot the photographers. And when they finally appeared, camera in hand, I knew the moment had arrived. As I rounded one of the Dragon’s tight curves, I noticed a photographer stationed by the roadside, silently capturing my poised Boxster and the Dragon beneath me. The resulting photos weren’t just snapshots; they were memories of taming the beast.

Tips for Driving the Tail of the Dragon

Road signs that remind drivers of the challenges ahead.

Before setting out on this incredible journey, I did a fair amount of research to understand the allure of the road and how best to tackle it. For anyone thinking about experiencing the Dragon for themselves, here are some essential tips I discovered along the way:

1. NEVER cross the double yellow line. There is no passing on the Tail. It has notoriously tight turns, and motorcyclists often lean far into corners. Serious accidents have occurred when drivers have crossed into oncoming traffic.

2. Drive the Tail multiple times. On your first run, take it slow. Drive well below your means to get a feel for the route. The Dragon is a road to be learned, not conquered on the first try.

3. Remember, medical services are far away. The closest hospital is over an hour away. It’s not worth pushing your luck or driving recklessly—respect the road and enjoy the ride.

4. Law enforcement is often present. You’ll see cops patrolling the Tail, so follow the speed limits and avoid unnecessary risks. Even within the speed limits, the curves offer plenty of thrills.

5. Bad weather can strike at any time. The Dragon’s curves become even more dangerous when wet. Take it easy if conditions aren’t ideal—wet roads aren’t the place to test your limits.

6 Best times to drive. This is a very popular place. If you want to avoid heavy traffic, aim to drive Monday through Thursday in the morning hours. Fridays and weekends can get quite busy, which takes away from the fun of an open road.

7. Use the pull-offs. If faster cars or bikes are behind you, use one of the many pull-offs to let them pass. Similarly, if you’re stuck behind a slower vehicle that does not pull over, you can pull over for a few minutes to create some space.

Looking Forward to More Adventures

Looking ahead to more adventures with my Boxster.

Driving the Tail of the Dragon is an experience I’ll never forget, but it’s just the beginning of my adventures with the Boxster. Having bought it with 63k miles, it was already a well-traveled machine, but there’s a lot of road ahead. This trip, with its tight turns and challenging curves, only reinforced my excitement for the miles to come.

Photos supplied by Jim Morrow

Reflecting on this adventure, I realized how the Boxster not only performed exceptionally well but also elevated the entire experience. Its ability to inspire confidence allowed me to truly embrace the spirit of the Dragon. With every mile, I felt more connected to the car, reinforcing my belief that the Boxster is not just a vehicle but a partner on this journey—a thrilling companion that encourages exploration and adventure.

This felt like a rite of passage, a journey to conquer a legendary road in a legendary car. The Tail of the Dragon has been tamed, but it remains a potent reminder of the respect this legendary road commands. As I look forward to new adventures, I carry with me the lessons learned from this journey, ready to face whatever twists and turns lie ahead.

Porsche shakes up 2025 driver assignments

Porsche is shifting its driver assignments for the 2025 racing season. Three-time LeMans winner Andre Lotterer’s contract came to an end with the close of the 2024 season, and Porsche chose not to renew. Likewise, WEC driver Frederic Makowiecki and IMSA driver Dane Cameron are also out of work for 2025. Part of the reason for the shakeup is a rules change that allows for only 2 drivers per car for most World Endurance Cup races, down from 3 in the 2024 season. There will still be three drivers in the long races like LeMans, Qatar and Bahrain, but 6-hour races will have only 2 drivers sharing the car.

Laurens Vanthoor and Kevin Estre will drive one of the Porsche Penske 963s in WEC competition while Michael Christensen will be joined by new driver Julien Andlauer in the #5 Porsche Penske 963 in WEC.

Matt Campbell with be coming over to team up with Mathieu Jaminet in IMSA races for Porsche Penske while Nick Tandy will be taking the place of Dane Cameron in the 963 with Filipe Nasr. Jaminet and Campbell will be travelling across the Atlantic to join the WEC 963s during the 24-Hours of LeMans. Likewise, Estre and Vanthoor will be coming to the US to pilot the Porsche Penske 963 in the long endurance races like the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the Motul Petit LeMans at the end of the 2025 IMSA season at Road Atlanta.

By winning the 2024 IMSA Championship, Porsche Penske won the right to enter a 3rd 963 in the 24-Hours of LeMans. Porsche has not announced who will be piloting that car, but Porsche Motorsports boss Thomas Laudenbach says he fully intends to enter that 3rd car at LeMans. We’ll just have to wait and see who drives it.

Shifting away from shifting

As 2024 comes to a close, the nation’s trucking companies are making a major ‘shift’ in the way they are doing business (no pun intended). Manufacturers of heavy trucks estimate that 90% of all the new semis rolling off the assembly line this year will put the power to the highway through automatic transmissions. Just a decade ago, only around 10% of the new semis on our nation’s highways rolled with automatic transmissions. Most trucking companies say the switch to automatics is essential to stay in business. Most trucking companies simply can’t find drivers who know how to drive the heavy multi-geared manual transmissions. And then there is the financial benefits of the automatics. Most trucking companies say they just can’t afford the repair costs that come with inexperienced drivers struggling to row through the gears. (Ask the military - the U.S. Armed forces switched to all automatics a long time ago to speed driver’s training and to reduce repair costs.) Increased availability of future drivers... reduced repair costs - the automatic transmissions are a win - win for trucking companies.
