President’s Message

January 2025

I

f your inbox looks anything like mine, it’s overflowing with offers to save more than you could ever imagine, check out the latest post, or click to get a free solution to problems you didn’t even know existed. It’s that time of year when everyone is fighting for our attention.

Well, we are no different, and want your attention, too. We’ve had a busy, event-filled 2024 and just finished planning a jam-packed 2025. The Columbia Porsche Group will have their planning meeting later in the month, so we will add their dates to the tentative schedule you’ll find in this issue. I hope everyone found something to attend this year. If not, let me know and I’ll help you find something.

We’ve added a few new venues, and I believe you will find something you’ll want to participate in. Some of the new events include a trip to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in March with discount tickets, no less. Or, the Cars & Coffee in April at the National Museum of Transportation. That’s always a cool place. We also are planning a joint picnic in Jefferson City with a few other Regions to celebrate the PCA’s 70th Anniversary.

So like I said last year, don’t forget to jot down on your calendar an event you want to attend. Maybe it’s the Parade in Oklahoma City or an HPDE (High Performance Driver’s Education) you’ve been promising yourself. Write it down now!

The Club’s 2025 elections are done, and you may have noticed that not much has changed. That’s because our Officers are elected for two-year terms, and all of the Board members wanted to serve again. Plus we’ve added two more for next year. So a big Thank You goes out to all of them.

Hope you and your family have a Happy and Healthy 2025.

A friendly drive

November ’s Drive to Washington M issouri

On this weekend day following the Thanksgiving holiday, I'm looking out my window at a snow-blanketed landscape. It is eerily quiet as the snow continues to fall and the moment gives way to a thought of, what am I going to do today?

Ordinarily I would be a modern-day nomad wandering the sinuous asphalt trails radiating out into the world. On this day, however, snow means I'm house-bound. My mental gymnastics eventually recall the good time I had

just a couple weeks earlier on the club's drive to Washington.

The morning started out cool as we gathered at the commuter lot near Highway 94. This drive was popular with the club members with 3 drive groups gathering for a total of 30 Porsches and about 50 members. We gather for the safety briefing and agree to the civility requirements that will assure we arrive unscathed at our destination.

We break the huddle and quickly empty the parking lot. Heading down Highway 94, and once again I find myself as sweep, but for group 2 this

time. I'm on the lookout for someone needing assistance in my group. Moreover, I contemplate the view ahead of me. Does your imagination need some help? Check out the pictures my wife Sheila took!

After 14 miles we hang a right on Femme Osage Creek Rd. These back roads present some hazards like a narrow bridge that offers passage for one direction or the other. This slowed us down to a momentary stop, but offered a safe opportunity for some adjustments in the cabin. I find myself looking down at the road while paused and contemplate its origin. I'm certain the asphalt ribbon was a horse trail over a hundred years ago. After all, this is Daniel Boone territory. We just drove by his house! What would he be thinking of us right now?

As the road weaves through the open farmland, I have my first opportunity to see far ahead. I see the Porsches ahead of me get smaller and smaller in the distance and eventually appear as just a colored dot scooting across the horizon. We total 32 miles traveled to arrive at Mount Pleasant

Winery. There we took the opportunity to pick up another bottle of blackberry wine. Maybe unconventional, but I follow some advice I picked up in Napa Valley years ago: "Life is short, drink what you like!"

Meandering back to Highway 94, and then Highway 47 and another 14 miles takes us all the way to Washington. We all find a parking space along Front Street and walk

towards Oak Street to find ... the Oak and Front Kitchen & Bar! So inspired. The club filled the restaurant and we were able to find a seat at the bar next to another new member. This was his first event! I enjoyed talking with him about his serendipitous Cayman purchase. It so happened that his partner needed a car, and what do you know, there was a Cayman there too! They walked away from the dealer with both cars!

Every event I have been to in my short tenure I've sat next to a stranger and departed with a new friend. I think I have about twelve-hundred of you to still meet. With lunch behind us and new acquaintances made, we take Highway 100 home. I can't wait for winter to melt into spring and our next adventure to forge new friendships.

Member Appreciation Reception

Porsche St. Louis Service Center Nov. 22nd, 2024

After a several decade hiatus, we thought it was time to bring back the Member Appreciation Reception. James Drake and the staff at the Porsche St. Louis Service Center - Chesterfield graciously opened their doors in the evening of November 22nd to allow us to greet many of the nearly 100 new members who joined our Region in 2024 and to allow them to become acquainted with many of our veteran members.

Porsche St. Louis Service Center - Chesterfield Service Center Manager Stephanie Gessner welcomed the members as they gathering in the Center’s lobby and toured the service bays in the back.

Regional Vice-president Ric Smith welcomed the new members and invited them to join us in our busy event schedule ahead. St. Louis Region now tops 1200 members and continues to grow. We hope to see more of our new and

veteran members as we welcome a very ambitious and exciting 2025.

St. Louis Region Holiday Gala

Dec. 7th, 2024

Our Porsche Christmas Holiday Gala at the Westborough Country Club was a fantastic celebration filled with holiday cheer and excitement. We also commemorated our club’s 65 Anniversary and

honored one of our very own, Earlwayne Stumpf, a board member, as he reached a significant milestone with the club at 50 years - one of less than a dozen of our 1200 members who have been a part of our Region for 50 years or more, and who continues to serve as our Region’s newsletter editor for 38 plus years.

The venue was beautifully decorated with our member’s memorabilia’s creating a festive atmosphere for everyone. We had a large collection of trophies borrowed from a few of our veteran members, including Jim Giese, Reid Vann and Jim Fiss that were used as centerpieces on the tables. The trophies covered many years of Porsche activities including autocrosses and car shows that made for great conversation starters. They also spilled over onto our “History Table” along with a sampling of our Plauderei newsletters that went back as far as 1975. We even had a few “Tiger Stripes” newsletters from the ‘80’s that were from when Mizzou Region in Columbia was in existence. The evening was filled with laughter, good drinks, great food, and awesome people. It was a perfect blend of luxury, camaraderie, and holiday spirit, leaving everyone looking forward to next year’s celebration. A truly special evening spent with like-minded friends at the Westborough Country Club!

Thank You for Sharing the Holiday Spirit !!

Once again the members of St. Louis Region showed the true holiday spirit as our donations to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign not only filled the two tables set aside to hold the donations, but the toys overflowed onto the floor surrounding the tables. Just what happens to those donations.?

Each year, the local Marine Corps battalion searches for a large building that can become ‘Toy Central’ for the first 3 weeks of December. This year, a building developer donated a recently vacated grocery store in Chesterfield Commons - across I-64/40 from the Porsche St. Louis Service Center in the Chesterfield Valley. The Marines had their work cut out for them this year as the late Thanksgiving shortened their collection and distribution schedule by a week.

Within 48 hours of our Christmas Gala, the toys were delivered to the Chesterfield collection center. Several Marines came out with shopping carts to collect the toys and roll them into the store. As our donations were being rolled into the center, other Marines were loading out boxes of toys into trucks and vans that were waiting in front of the building to pick up their gifts.

In mid-November, the Marines open their Toys for Tots donation website for requests for toys. Churches, civic organizations, and clubs submit their requests listing the number of toys they would like to receive according to

the number of boys and girls of what ages they expect to receive the toys.

Our donations were rolled to one side of the store where one group of Marines emptied the toys onto tables and then sorted them into bins according to age and gender of the expected recipients. Meanwhile, a second group of Marines were walking among the toy bins, each Marine gathering up toys which would be appropriate for the ages of the boys and girls listed on the charity request. Those toys were carried over to the other side of the store where a third group of Marines were placing the toys in boxes and bags to ready them for pickup. The boxes and bags were loaded onto pallets and the original request forms were attached to the pallets to await pickup by the charity. All these pallets were already packed waiting for pickup by the charities which had requested gifts for this holiday season. Dozens of Marine volunteers were sorting...selecting and packing the toy donations to delivery while a fourth group of Marines with hydraulic pallet jacks were rolling loaded pallets out the front door and placing the boxes and bags into waiting trucks and vans. It was clear that the officers supervising this beehive of activity had done this before. The loss of a week to accomplish their mission may have sped up the timetable, but these Marines knew their mission and were ready to accomplish their goals. Once again this year, the ‘Santa’ responsible for the gifts under the tree of many children wore camo - not red and white.

These toys go to organizations and church groups throughout the area which is basically the same Southeastern Missouri and Southern Illinois area served by St. Louis Region PCA. Your donations brightened the holidays of the less fortunate children who might just be our neighbors across town. Thank you for your generosity. St. Louis Region PCA has been a Toys for Tots supporter for decades, and our long-term generous support does not go unnoticed. Thank you for helping us to carry on our legacy of making the holidays a little brighter to the children of our Region!

CPG toasts the Holidays

December 15th

The Columbia Porsche Group met for their annual holiday party on Sunday, Dec. 15th at Eleven Eleven Restaurant at the Broadway Hotel. The restaurant was very accommodating with our group of about 20 members. Region President Steve Sullivan and wife Sue were our guests of honor.

Steve brought along a collection of STL Region pictures and newsletters to help commemorate the Region’s 65th anniversary, including a 1981 newsletter from when Columbia was its own Region. Excellent food, conversation and service were had by all as we looked back on the fun times we had, and forward to the new year of more fun Porsche activities.

Toning down their Brilliance

They’ve barely made it into the showroom, and they are already being recalled. Each and every one of the early Macan Electric SUVs, manufactured from between March 15 and November 4 are being recalled because their headlamps are too bright for U.S. standards. That’s almost 3,000 new Macan EVs - 2,941 to be exact

Porsche has discovered that the headlamps on the new Macans were programmed to the European Economic Commission (ECE) lighting standards which are considerably brighter than allowed by the U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). The U.S. rule makers fear the brighter European lights would dazzle oncoming drivers, reducing their night vision and increase the risk of nighttime crashes.

Luckily, the Macan EV lights are LEDs which can simply be programmed to set their brightness levels. Porsche service technicians will just have to reprogram the headlight control unit software to dim the lights to meet the Federal standards. That reprogramming will be performed at no cost to the Macan owners. Letters alerting owners that their Macans need to be brought in for reprogramming will go out to owners the last week of January.

Living out in the country, I can’t begin to count the number of times I wished my headlights were brighter, especially during deer season. It’s seems almost ironic that Porsche has to reduce the brightness of the new headlamps.

Winter Storage

Nature has been kind to us as we closed out 2024, but there is still rough weather ahead. Thinking of putting the Porsche away for the remainder of Winter? Here’s some tips from a Porsche veteran.

I’ve been putting Porsches away for Winter for about 50 years, off and on. We all know you shouldn’t just park the car in the garage and hope for the bet by just starting it once in a while, as there are many problems that can arise from this approach. Here are some suggestions I have, coming from experience and talking to friends who have been taking care of their cars longer than I have.

Basic Prep:

Start with a clean car inside and out. Vacuum thoroughly, and shampoo carpets if needed but be sure carpets are absolutely bone dry before reinstalling. I don’t recommend turning your hose on your car to wash it, unless you’re planning a long drive afterwards to make sure all the nooks and crannies are thoroughly dry. I prefer the two bucket sponge bath method for this project, because any water stored in seams or areas in accessible to normal drying will eventually cause corrosion. If your car is due for waxing, do it now.

Soft surfaces:

This is a good time to clean and feed your leather surfaces using premium care products. I use an old white wash cloth for this, and it’s amazing how much grime shows up on that terry cloth after a season of fair weather driving. This is also an excellent time to go over all the rubber door and lid seals with a clean cloth soaked in spray silicone. Run the cloth on both inside and outside channels of these seals to remove dead rubber particles (your cloth will discolor black), and to “feed” the rubber to keep it supple and protected from dry air and the Sun. I’ve kept the seals supple and alive for decades with this technique. You can also carefully clean and use a Teflon dry-lube on your sunroof channels. Don’t use a petroleum lubricant here as it will just attract dirt, dust, and pollen.

Fluids:

We should all be using full synthetic oil in our engines, and I think it’s OK to park your car for the Winter without fresh engine oil if the oil is pretty fresh, say with fewer than 5000 miles since the last change.

Fuel should be topped right up to the top of the filler, and with the use of a premium fuel stabilizer. After filling, drive your car 7 - 10 miles to make sure the stabilized fuel

has reached through the fuel pump, filters, carbs, or injection pump and injectors. Modern 10% ethanol fuel can be terrible for fuel systems, and a good stabilizer is an absolute must to protect your system’s components.

Tires:

Inflate your tires to about 8-10 psi above normal. Make up some tire cushions and park your car on them. I use two or three layers of carpet samples with sections cut from an old yoga mat. You can also buy tire cradles that keep the tires from flat spotting during the long cold weather storage, but padding between the tire and floor and extra psi seems to work just fine.

Vermin:

This can be a big problem whether you live in the city, suburbs, or country. Mice are everywhere, and they love to spend the winter in your garage. If you provide feeding stations for songbirds, like I do, make sure your seed storage is tightly closed, and sweep up any spillage down to the last particle. Inside your stored car, use a mixture of mothballs, brand name laundry dryer sheets, and peppermint oil to repel any visitors. I lay down a sheet of aluminum foil on the foot well carpets, and place a few mothballs on it. Paper towels soaked in peppermint oil are placed in the storage areas, also on foil sheets (so the oil doesn’t discolor the carpet), with dryer sheets in the engine bay and anywhere else I can think of. Some modern cars use wiring insulated with natural fibers, and mice are attracted to these wires and can cause enormous damage in a short time.

Loosely wad up some balls of steel wool, and slip them in the exhaust tailpipes. Mice will get all the way into the exhaust manifolds if you let them.

Leave yourself a note on the driver seat to remind yourself where you left it all, so you don’t have your engine inhale anything during Spring start up.

Set a couple mousetraps in your garage along the walls near the door, and check them often. If you see any activity at all, check and refresh the preparation you’ve made in the car. Furthermore, and I know some of you won’t like this idea at all, if you happen to see any of our snake friends around your house during our three warmer seasons, please leave them alone. There are at least a half dozen harmless species here in Missouri that are voracious mouse eaters, and if you’re lucky enough to have one take up residence in your yard or garden, your potential mouse problem will disappear, and you probably won’t see your snake friends very often at all. If you’re still uncomfortable with this idea, use that wildlife encyclopedia in your pocket (your phone), and learn to identify these very beneficial wildlife.

Battery:

Most modern Porsches under 30 years old will have systems that will draw some small power draw from the battery when the car is parked, so you will need a trickle

charger for long term storage. With older cars that are completely analog, just remove the battery and store it in your basement for the winter.

So now your car is under cover, hooked up to power, clean and ready for Spring, and protected from critters. Keep an eye on your mousetraps and battery tender, and open the car up for inspection about once a month, and you’re are prepared as you can be.

Miles Cramer

Another one bites the dust...

hile the news has been focused on the struggle between Volkswagen and its labor unions over possible plant closings, a similar problem has been boiling on the other side of the world. Nissan has been battling to keep its head above water, and has decided it is a futile battle. Nissan has quietly negotiated a deal to merge with Honda to save the fabled Japanese automaker. The merger is not yet a done deal, but Nissan, Honda and Honda’s partner Mitsubishi hope to have the details ironed out by mid-Summer with the deal finalized by August 2026. If the deal is finalized, the combined company

A Univeral EV Charging Standard

It’s about time

Let’s be honest...recharging an electric vehicle is no where near as easy as it should be. Frankly, it’s a pain in the backside, and it’s a major stumbling block that many new EV owners were not told about and never briefed on when they signed the dotted line and were handed the keys of their shiny new vehicle. If an EV owner wants to recharge their vehicle anywhere but at their at-home garage, that driver is going to be faced with a list of stumbling blocks that has soured many an EV owner on their new ride. It’s definitely a heck of a lot more difficult that pulling up to a gas pump, putting the nozzle in the tank inlet and locking the nozzle in the on position.

First challenge is to find an operating charging station. There are apps on your phone or in your EV’s info-tainment system that can help you locate charging stations. But then you have to hope there is an open charger for you to plug in to, and you also have to hope it works. But once you get past that obstacle, you have to hope you have the correct app to link your vehicle to that charger. Each charging company has a slightly different requirement to linking an EV to their system before the current will be turned on. If you’re driving a Tesla and using a Tesla charger, you’re pretty well home free. But pull a Taycan up to a ChargePoint or EVgo charger and life will not be quite so easy. Often, that requires an app on your phone linked to that charging company. EVgo is different than ChargePoint which is different than Electrify America which is different than Tesla....etc...etc...etc. I think you get the idea.

But hopefully we are finally a little closer to relieving that headache with the announcement just before Thanksgiving that the major charging companies have finally agreed to work with the Society of Automotive Engineers to design a common system that will be the same if you pull up to a Tesla charger or a ChargePoint charger...or EVgo...etc....etc. The objective is to making pulling up to an EV charger just as easy as pulling up to a gas pump - drive up...plug in...and go inside to get a cup of coffee or use the restroom. And there is even a possibility that the new standard might allow you to program your car to tell the charger how you plan on paying for that recharge - no need to swipe a credit card or program in a membership number.

Under the plan, the Society of Automotive Engineers will put together what the industry is calling a set of “Certificate Trust List Requirements”. This is basically an outline of what it takes to successfully and easily recharge an EV. EV recharging companies will then have to decide it they want to modify or design their rechargers to meet those

requirements. The companies that agree will be given the green light to become a part of the new national recharging system. Tesla...Electrify America...ChargePoint... GM...Ford and Toyota were all at the table when this plan was hashed out and all have agreed to join the effort to standardize EV recharging. The goal is to make finding and recharging an EV just as easy at pushing that gas pump nozzle into the fuel tank inlet and locking the valve open so the juice can flow. The chargers operating under the new standardized system would take care of the connection protocols that connect the vehicle to the charging system (the job currently handled by the various charging apps) and would monitor the recharging current so that the charging is done as quickly and safely as possible. And if you have authorized your in-car system to handle the payments, your vehicle will not only be charged when you walk back to it, but the recharge will have been paid for. All you have to do it unplug and hang the cable back on the charger...get in your EV and drive away.

This all sounds like its pretty complicated, but in reality, most of these required functions are already programmed into the chargers or the charging app already on the EV owners phone. It’s basically a task of making sure all the systems ask the same questions and that the vehicles all answer the same answers. Some systems are ready to link up to the network now, but others will require some software modifications to link up flawlessly. As a result, some chargers are already ready to begin testing the new system as early as this coming summer. If the chargers have to be modified or the apps have to be rewritten, it will take a little longer to ‘plug-in’ to the system. But without this industry-wide system, EV ownership will continue to basically be more aggravation than its worth. This continues to stand in the way of many people even looking at the possibility of putting an EV in their garage. This should have been one of the first things done before EVs were rolled into dealer showrooms. It is literally the modern day example of ‘putting the cart before the horse’. Perhaps this might make the move towards EV a little less painful.

This is very reminiscent of the battle decades ago between Panasonic VHS and Sony Betamax videotapes. Each company thought they had the better system, and refused to give in and neither would accept an industry standard. (Yes, I know...its an example from way back in the dinosaur days, but the lesson is that because neither side would give in the struggle ended in the death of a very good - and frankly technically superior Sony Betamax tape system. But the economic market system is a cruel battlefield indeed.) As long as some EV charging companies were willing to stand their ground in support of their own proprietary systems, some companies were surely headed to join the dinosaurs towards extinction. And even worse, the whole move to EVs would surely grind very, very slowly forward. Hopefully things might end up a little easier and faster for everyone.
