President’s Message
September 2024
Wow, summer has been speeding by, hasn’t it? My grand kids are already back in school, and we are focusing on the events planned for the Fall.
The All Porsche Car Show was held at the Porsche St. Louis dealership a few weeks ago and based by the crowd size was a big hit. The weather was delightful, especially compared to last year. Our heartfelt “Thanks” go out to everyone at the dealership who basically came to work so we could enjoy their beautiful facility and look at nice cars on a Sunday. Congrats to all the class winners who drove home with a nice trophy. Another big “Thank You” also goes to the Board members and volunteers who organized and staffed the show. Could not have done it without you!
Coming up...we have Thirsty Thursday at Michael’s Bar and Grill in Maplewood on Sept. 5th. We have our General Board meeting on Sept. 11th at the Center of Clayton, where everyone is welcome. On the 14th, the Tire Rack Street Survival School takes to the parking lot at the Family Arena in St. Charles. The Columbia Group is having a Social at the A Frame WineGarden in Les Bourgeois Vineyards near Rocheport on Sept. 15th. This is a beautiful venue and always well attended. Our Porsche St. Louis Fall HPDE on Sept. 20-22nd is filling up fast, so sign up now.
The National Fall Treffen is at Mount Washington Resort in New Hampshire on Sept. 29th thru Oct. 3rd. If you haven’t attended a National Treffen, it is a well-run event with lots of swag, tours and elegant dinners, typically held at amazing venues.
Next month...keep an eye peeled for the Porsches in the Park event on Oct. 6th. This time we would like to invite all of the four-door Porsches to come out and show off your car. Everyone is welcome and would love to see your Macan, Cayenne, Panamera or Taycan. This is a casual, relaxed gathering where coffee and donuts are served, and you can stay for as long or as little as you like. Come show off your prized Porsche!
Our Fall Color Tour to Hermann, MO on Oct.19th, will feature a new format. Taking a big group to Hermann during OctoberFest has never been a problem. The problem was finding a venue that would take reservations for 50 or more people. So this time, we will have the same great tour with the stop at Thierbach’s Orchard, then enjoy a catered box lunch together at the huge picnic pavilion at beautiful Riverfront Park. Also on the 19th, we have the Street Survival School at St. Charles Airport (Smart Field) in St. Charles County. This is a very worthy cause that helps teach young drivers to become more comfortable with car control and car safety.
Happy Motoring!
Steve Sullivan
Thirsty Thursday
Michael’s Bar & Grill
7101 Manchester, Maplewood
6:30 p.m., September 5th, 2024
Summer is in the rear view, and it’s time for life to fall back into the regular routine of school...work and preparing for Fall and the busy driving season that accompanies the cooler weather of Fall. Join us as we say good-bye to Summer at Michael’s Bar & Grill at 7101 Manchester in Maplewood- just west of McCausland. There is plenty of parking across the street, but be careful crossing traffic filled Manchester. Michael’s offers a full menu of Mediterranean and America favorites. Come with a thirst and a hearty appetite.
There will be no official meeting or agenda associated with this event. Just an evening of sharing great food and beverages surrounded by Porsche friends. Reservations are required, so look for the event on
www.msreg.com/Michaels-B-and-G
to RSVP. Please make your reservations by Sept. 3rd so we can save your place around the table. See you there!
General Board Meeting
Center of Clayton
Sept. 11th, 6:30 pm
Hopefully, Nature will soon be turning down the heat in time for the busy Fall driving season ahead. And it’s time to look forward to the end-of-the-year events on the horizon. The last HPDE of the year is just weeks away to be quickly followed by the popular Fall Color Tour and the final Street Survival Schools of 2024. That active calendar requires a lot of planning and volunteer efforts. We would love to have your input and energy to make these events a success. It promises to be an active September Board Meeting at the Center of Clayton just north of Shaw Park in Clayton. Our Board meetings are open to all, and we invite you to join us.
We’d like to hear your ideas, and welcome you to join us at the Center of Clayton. If you are interested, contact President Steve at president@stl.pca.org. Board members - you only need to RSVP if you will not be joining us. All members who are planning to participate, please RSVP to president@stl.pca.org. so we can alert you to the details of the Board meeting.

CPG on the Blufftop
2:00 pm, Sept. 15
A Frame WineGarden, Rocheport
Our mid-Missouri members will be toasting good-bye to Summer and ushering in Fall with a Sunday, Sept. 15th gathering at the A Frame WineGarden at The Blufftop at Rocheport. The several venues that make up what used to be called Les Bourgeois Vineyards just off the Rocheport Exit off I-70 just west of Columbia are now being referred to by their individual names...The Bistro on The Blufftop (the restaurant)...The Tasting Room on The Blufftop (the tasting room and wine shop) and the A Frame WineGarden (the A Frame event venue on the top of the bluff just west of the restaurant). They are all the same buildings and venues...just operating under individual names as part of The Blufftop at Rochport complex of the Les Bourgeois Vineyards.
There will be no drive associated with this event - just a gathering at the A Frame WineGarden beginning at 2 pm thru 4pm. (Plenty of time for a leisurely drive west from St. Louis if you’d like to join in on the fun.) Join Porsche friends for a relaxing afternoon overlooking the Missouri River just west of Columbia, MO.
SUVs continue to lead sales
Macan and Cayenne sales continue to power Porsche sales for the first 6 months of 2024. For the first half of 2024, Macans outsold 911s almost 2-to-1. Porsche SUVs outsold the combined total of all Porsche cars by almost 10,000 units.
911s continue to be the biggest selling car - outselling Boxster/Cayman and Taycan models nearly 3-to-1. Total U.S. Porsche sales for the first half of 2024 fell just 2,000 units below the same period a year ago.
Heading West...
Porsche owners looking for vehicle repairs or service no longer have to battle through the traffic of Maplewood to get to factory service now that the Porsche St. Louis Service Center Chesterfield is now open. Porsche St. Louis now has a new, state-of-the-art service center in the Chesterfield Valley at 17455 N Outer 40 Road - just west of The Factory and Topgolf Chesterfield.
The facility has been specially designed and built for service only. The Porsche St. Louis vehicle showroom remains at 2970 South Hanley Road, but Porsche St. Louis has built a second fully stocked parts and service facility within an easy drive of West County and St. Charles County customers. Just pull under the canopy on the eastern side of the building to check in for service.
Many of the experienced service staff and technicians we have come to know over the years in Maplewood can now be found at the Chesterfield shop with new technicians now setting up their work stations at the Hanley facility.
Porsche St. Louis invited St. Louis Region members to the new facility for a ‘soft opening’ to become familiar with the building several days before the ‘official’ opening at the beginning of August. You can schedule a service appointment online at porschestlouis.com or call the Chesterfield facility at 314-887-3547.
Porsche St. Louis used the opening of the Chesterfield Service Center to unveil their latest Classic Restoration Challenge project - a beautifully restored and upgraded 2008 911 Carrera 4S.....
another ‘classic’ example that with TLC, Porsches can get better with age.
Porsche St. Louis Service Center Chesterfield is now open for your business. Schedule an appointment at either location online or by phone.
Downing a frosty mug...
Does one ever get too old for a frosty mug of root beer? As the years pass, it seems that our tastes change to prefer something tangy and perhaps a bit bitter, but on a hot summer day, there is still something about the cold, frosty mug of root beer with a foamy head. And there was a lot of root beer consumed at our August Thirsty Thursday at the Fitz’s South County location. Many started out with something golden and foamy from the tap, but before the night was over, many couldn’t pass up the chance for a taste of the past - a cold mug of root beer. Several dozen members gathered around the bar at Fitz’s for lively conversations before settling down at the tables filling the bar area.
Thirsty Thursdays are designed to be a casual evening with friends...telling stories...renewing friendships and making new ones with the newer members who turn out to see what this ‘car club’ family is like. If you’ve never tried a Thirsty Thursday, RSVP on motorsportreg to save your place at the table and join us. You might be surprised at the friendships that grow from that evening.
All Porsche Car Show
August 18
On Sunday, August 18th, the lots surrounding the Porsche St. Louis showroom became a virtual showroom of Porsche history as the facility very graciously cleared their lots to make room for our 2024 All Porsche Car Show participants. The parking spaces around the dealership were filled with beautiful and classic Porsches of all models and vintages. Thankfully, Mother Nature turned the heat down a little this year to give us a respite from last year’s triple digit heat. Clouds frequently filled the skies to shield participants from the August sun to hold the temperatures to a much more comfortable St. Louis Summer level. Participants and guests were able to seek comfort in the Service Checkin area where a number of our Show sponsors set up their displays. Special thanks to Porsche St. Louis, JML Audio of St. Louis, St. Louis Auto Shield and Weiss Insurance for stepping forward to help us make this show possible.
Visitors casually strolled among the Porsches to view the engineering progress of the Porsche marque over the decades, and to vote for their favorites among the many classes broken down by vehicle model and vintage. Winners came away from the afternoon with trophies and bragging rights as the ‘best of the best’ among their peers.

911 HybridComing full circle
When Porsche pulled the wraps off the 2025 911 Carrera GTS Hybrid, you could literally hear the gasps over the Porsche world. For early adapters, the 911 Hybrid was long overdue... for purists, the idea of a hybrid 911 was a betrayal of everything Porsche stood for... and for many, perhaps it is time for Porsche to take the 911 into the future.
But for those who truly know Porsche history, the adoption of a hybrid drive system in a 911 brings the company back to its earliest days of existence. Many Porschephiles will probably be shocked to know that the founder of our beloved marque was quite a bit different than most expect. Looking at Ferdinand Porsche’s first days as an engineer, it might be very possible that Ferdinand would have been quite happy if every vehicle to ever carry his name would have been some sort of hybrid vehicle.
In his book, PORSCHE - The Man and His Cars, author Richard von Frankenberg noted that very early in his life, Ferdinand was fascinated with electricity. Ferdinand’s father, Anton, a tinsmith, steered his son towards taking over the family business, but Ferdinand was far more interested in electricity and its future. Anton was determined that Ferdinand would follow in his tinsmith footsteps, forbidding Ferdinand from doing anything not related to furthering his education in the craft of tin smithing. Ferdinand set up a workshop in the attic of his home so he could conduct experiments outside his father’s view. When Anton stumbled upon Ferdinand’s workshop, he stomped on all the home built batteries to destroy his son’s work and hopefully his plans for the future. Unfortunately, the batteries contained acid which squirted all over the attic as Anton squashed them under his weight, destroying his shoes, burning the skin on his feet and lower legs and damaging the attic structure - not exactly good for the father / son relationship. Ferdinand’s mother clearly saw her son’s determination to forge his own future, so she convinced Anton that they should send Ferdinand to night classes at a nearby technical school, and perhaps the young man might satisfy his curiosity about electricity and hopefully come to see the wisdom of coming back to the family business. Well, it didn’t quite work out that way.
So Ferdinand worked in the tinsmith shop during the day and attended night classes at the Imperial Technical school in Reichenberg. As long as Ferdinand worked in the family shop, Anton paid no attention to what Ferdinand was doing in his home workshop until he came home one night to find his house brightly lit with electrical lighting designed and built by Ferdinand as a class project. The house contained a generator...
switching devices...wiring...lighting...everything needed to become the only house in the neighborhood to be electrified. Ferdinand’s interest in electricity was growing, so Anton gave in and allowed his son to enroll in the Vienna Technical University. At age 18, Ferdinand left his family to continue his studies in electricity,
History is filled with stories about the introduction of electricity to the world via the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris. To Ferdinand, the World Exhibition in Paris was like a kid in a candy store. It only kicked his interest in electricity into high gear. Several years later, about the time of his graduation from the Vienna Tech school, Ferdinand caught the attention of Jacob Lohner, owner of a very well known carriage and wagon company. Lohner hired the 22 year old inexperienced engineer and basically gave Porsche a blank check to expand his experiments with electrical power. That was almost a very expensive mistake because Porsche definitely knew how to spend money on tools and unproven experiments, but the end result became the basis of carriages and work wagons powered by electric hub motors driving the front wheels forward. Porsche became convinced that the incredible torque generated from the wheel hub motors and the instant power at the flip of a switch was clearly the future of transportation. Porsche dove headlong into designing electric wagons and carriages.
Porsche not only designed his electric vehicle designs. He proved to be a very competent performance driver. On September 23, 1900, Porsche piloted his experimental Lohner car to a speed record on an uphill stretch of road outside Vienna. Capturing the speed record for highway travel on an uphill road only cemented Porsche’s belief in the future of electric vehicle power. He pressed on with his experiments and designs, refining his designs into some rather attractive ‘motor vehicles’ for the time. Porsche recognized that depending on batteries alone for electric power limited his vehicles to short trips from their starting point. He convinced his boss, Lohner, that the future lie in ‘mixed’ drivetrains - using a small gasoline engine to power a generator to provide the electricity for the vehicle’s drive wheels. Porsche was convinced that small engines built by Daimler would be perfect to power the generator to provide power for his ‘petrol-electric mixed cars’ as he called them. And Porsche’s ‘mixed’ cars went on to win several races in 1902 - 1903. Porsche’s work caught the attention of Austrian Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand who lauded Porsche’s work and consulted with Porsche on the future of electric ‘mixed’ power in military vehicles. (Yes, that’s the very
same Arch Duke Ferdinand who took an assassin’s bullet to start what the world later came to call World War 1.)
Ferdinand Porsche became a Reserve Infantry soldier in the Arch Duke’s Army, but was pulled out of field service and put to work designing military vehicles for the Arch Duke’s military. Porsche penned several designs for ‘mixed’ powered heavy trucks to transport the army’s supplies and troops and heavy ‘tractors’ to pull cannons and artillery pieces. Suddenly, Porsche’s ‘mixed’ power designs became the rage for WW1 era military equipment, and companies like Lohner who underwrote Porsche’s costly experiments years earlier, suddenly recouped their investments in lush military contracts.
After World War 1, Ferdinand Porsche continued to experiment and design ‘mixed’ power drivetrains for a couple decades after the fighting stopped. Porsche’s designs and experiments later caught the attention of Adolph Hitler, and Porsche became one of the Fuhrer’s inner circle of engineers. Porsche continued to develop his ideas for ‘mixed’ power drivetrains to power his designs for Hitler’s tanks and heavy military vehicles. However, Porsche opted for a simpler internal combustion design for Hitler’s ‘People’s Car’ - the predecessor of the Volkswagen. Porsche felt the weight and complexity of having a petrol engine / generator / electric motors and drive train were a little too much for a small car. Ferdinand’s son, Ferry, worked alongside his father in the design and development of the Volkswagen. Luckily, Ferry was kept at arm’s length of most of Ferdinand’s military work for the Third Reich, so Ferry was basically spared imprisonment after the war for supporting Hitler’s Army. Ferdinand was not so lucky, and ended up in prison for his war machine designs.
Ferry did not share his father’s experience and enthusiasm for ‘mixed’ or hybrid drivetrains in vehicles, so Ferry’s designs abandoned the decades of work Porsche engineers had on hybrid vehicle power. Interest in hybrid drivetrains evaporated until now. The question has to be asked, “Had Ferry worked alongside his father on designing hybrid drivetrains, would we have had to wait more than 75 years to see a hybrid drive system in a Porsche?”
The idea of a hybrid drive Porsche is not really all that new. It’s really just Porsche engineering coming back full circle to where it began 120+ years ago.
120 years of Porsche hybrid engineering

A statistical analysis of 13 driving statistics such as number of fatal car crashes...rate of car theft...road rage incidents...fatal accidents involving drunk drivers...car / animal collisions...percentage of uninsured drivers shows Missouri is the second most dangerous state to drive in the U.S. The statistics were supplied by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the FBI, Bureau of Transportation Statistics, and State Farm Insurance. Only Mississippi recorded worse driving numbers than Missouri.
Missouri’s ranking took a hit due to its 5th highest rate of car thefts...6th highest total of road rage incidents...10th highest number of accidents involving drunk drivers...and 10th highest number of vehicle / animal accidents.
The top 5 most hazardous states to drive in are: 1. - Mississippi...2. - Missouri...3.Kentucky... 4. - Tennessee...5. - Oklahoma.
In case you’re wondering, Illinois ranks 36th riskiest of U.S.’s 50 states.
