President’s Message

July 2024

T

he summer is starting off like gang busters with all the events we’ve held. There are more details in this newsletter, but here is a quick recap...

On the Illinois side of the Region, we had our firstever Porsches on the Bricks, which was a big success. Approximately 60 Porsches showed up to take over St. Louis Street in downtown Lebanon, IL. I think the Mayor and everyone in town really enjoyed the show. The Great River Road drive to Grafton, IL was also well attended and did not disappoint.

The Columbia Group had their Memorial Day Social, hosted by the always gracious Danuser’s. They open their home to everyone and put on quite a spread. They have a pretty cool garage, too! The European Auto Show was held at Mini of St. Louis, and the PCA members who hosted the PCA tent reported a lot of interest and discussion with current and potential members.

Sue and I just returned from the 68th Parade at Birmingham, AL. Almost 1000 Porsches were registered, and the week was filled with many different events, both Porsche and non-Porsche related. See my article in this month’s newsletter for more details. We hosted our fourth-annual Women on Wheels HPDE and the Intro to HPDE last weekend to another sellout crowd. Mia Walsh, the National HPDE Chair, paid us a visit and was impressed on how well our HPDE committee puts on an event.

The Columbia Group will host their Porsches and Pastries on June 29th at Cosmo Park. Because the first Thursday in July is on the fourth, we will instead hold our Thirsty Thursday on the 11th at Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood. That is always a great place to meet, regardless of the reason.

Don’t forget - you are the PCA! Without you, the club doesn’t exist. Please take a moment to get involved with your community of Porsche owners and take advantage of the great friends you find along the way.

General Board Meeting

Center of Clayton

July 10th, 6:30 pm

Summer is definitely here. When the heat bakes our summer events, the Region slows down a little with a drop in the number of events on the Regional calendar. But we still have an active calendar ahead requiring advanced planning and volunteer efforts. We would love to have your input and energy in the Region to make these events a success. It promises to be an active July Board Meeting at the Center of Clayton event center just north of Shaw Park in Clayton. Our Board meetings are open to all, and we invite you to join us.

We’d like to hear your ideas, and welcome you to join us at the Center of Clayton. If you are interested, contact President Steve at pres@stl.pca.org. Board membersyou only need to RSVP if you will not be joining us. All members who are planning to participate, please RSVP to pres@stl.pca.org. so we can alert you to the details of the Board meeting.

Thirsty Thursday

Schlafly Bottleworks

7260 Southwest, Maplewood

6:00 p.m., July 11th, 2024

Join us as we toast Summer with our July Thirsty Thursday at the Schlafly Bottleworks at 7260 Southwest in Maplewood - where Manchester Avenue and Southwest meet. The Bottleworks is one of Schlafly’s most popular brew pubs and restaurants, serving a varied menu of appetizers, wraps, sandwiches, burgers and pizza...not to mention the original Schlafly beers that opened the craft beer market in St. Louis. Come with a thirst and a hearty appetite.

There will be no official meeting or agenda associated with this event. Just an evening of sharing great food and beverages surrounded by your Porsche friends. Reservations are required, so look for the event on

www.msreg.com/Schlaflythirstythursday

to RSVP. Please make your reservations by July 8th so we can save your place around the table. See you there!

St Louis Region PCA is Organizing the July 20th Street Survival

Our region is taking the responsibility of organizing the July 20th Street Survival School at St Charles Airport (Smart Field). If you have been looking for a way to get more involved in our region or with helping save lives on the roads around the area, this is your opportunity. We need Volunteers to help with set-up, registration, lunch, and teardown. We also need In Car Coaches to instruct the teens. If you safely pilot your vehicle in St Louis traffic each day, you have the skills we are looking for in Coaches. There is a simple online certification course that you will need to go through before the School. Simply follow this link Sign Up for Coaches’ Training – Welcome to Tire Rack Street Survival. Real world. Hands-on.

For over 20 years, St. Louis Region PCA has worked alongside the St. Louis Chapter of the BMW Car Club of America and St. Louis Region, Sports Car Club of America to host this advanced car handling education to local teenagers.

For more information on how you can help out with this event, contact Dan Hinkebein 314-708-1919 dhink@sbcglobal.net.

Porsches on the Bricks

May 25, Lebanon, IL

The Porsches on the Bricks event was held in quaint Lebanon, Illinois on May 25, 2024. We were blessed with some wonderful weather and a surprising turn out for our first event at this venue. This event was a fun car show that took place in the charming small town of Lebanon, a short 20 miles east of St. Louis, home of a number of unique stores and restaurants.

We had a wonderful turnout of club members and locals with 75 Porsches of different years and models lining the brick street in the middle of town! We look forward to making this an annual event. The cooperation and help we received from the people of Lebanon and the Chamber of Commerce was outstanding.

Eric Kirkpatrick

A special THANK YOU to Eric Kirkpatrick and Charles Faussete for spearheading this event on the Regional Calendar.

Mark Twain Forest Run

June 2nd

The early Summer morning run from St. Louis to the northern fringes of the Mark Twain National Forest is always a popular event. The winding roads through the twisting hills on the northern edge of the Ozarks always fills quickly. Unfortunately, that is an area of small towns and small stopping places like our popular destination of Bixby’s General Store, but as you can see, there isn’t room for a large number of cars, so participation in the drive has to be limited to a number that can safely pull off the road at event’s end.

We easily fill the lot at Bixby’s every year. We apologize if registration was full before you could sign up...the event does reach maximum capacity quickly. The opening of registration is announced on our social media outlets and on our Regional website, so keep a watchful eye out for the announcement of the upcoming run, and act quickly so that you don’t miss out on this highlight of our Regional calendar. Thanks to Tour Meister Bob Tamsky for organizing and leading this popular event.

TEuropean Auto Show

June 9th, 2024, Mini of St. Louis

he weather started out a little questionable, but Nature delivered a dry and comfortable afternoon for the area’s longest running charity car show at Mini of St. Louis. Once again, St. Louis Region members turned out for a colorful display of beautiful examples of our favorite marque around our St. Louis Region trailer and canopy. Region volunteers happily answered the questions of inquisitive show visitors about our Region activities. St. Louis Region typically sees a significant increase in members in the weeks

following the Show. Thanks to our Show volunteers and to all the members who brought their Porsches for display at the Show.

Next show on our Regional Calendar is the upcoming All Porsche Show in August. Watch for details and consider joining us in showing our pride in our favorite marque.

68th Porsche Parade

Birmingham, Alabama

Steve and Sue Sullivan

Sue and I drove to Birmingham, AL on Sunday to attend the 68th Porsche Parade. The ride was pretty uneventful, being all highway, and our 911 simply hummed along, filled with a lot of soft bags of clothes for the next few days. Sue would say it hums a little too loudly, but that’s another story. After checking in and gathering our event tickets, we went to the Zone Gathering at the City Walk, where peoiple from the different Zones gather for a quick social typically hosted by their Zone Rep. Stephen Kemp is our Zone 10 Rep, and he was giving out small posters and answering questions for people who have not attended a Parade before. There were ten people from our St. Louis Region and several from Ozark Lakes Region in attendance. Past St. Louis President Steve Warren and his wife Gail, came up from their new home in Florida and joined us at the Zone Gathering.

Both of these were held on Birmingham’s unique City Walk which is a pedestrian park underneath the Interstate, with next to the Sheraton hotel. It was a pretty cool venue being very cool and open, with the advantage of being totally shaded from the summer sun. Besides ourselves with our 996TT, Gary and Jean Bachman and Charles Moore were displaying their cars.

Monday started off bright and early with the Concours and Historic car shows. The Historic car show highlighted the 911 in all its versions.

On Day Two, we signed up to test drive the new Porsche e-bikes. Very well built, as you would expect, and great to pedal around the streets of Birmingham.

The Bachman’s were showing their 991T in the Historic display of 911s, and Charles Moore was showing his beautiful 356 in the Concours. Charles took third place in his class, so Congrats to him!

We also checked out the Hospitality area that included complimentary snacks and refreshments from 9 - 5 daily. Lots of vendors with goodies for your favorite Porsches. In the afternoon, we attended the RC car races and

Ice Cream Social. Some of those kids are pretty fast with those RC cars.

Another option we took in were the technical talks, called Tech Tactics, which consists of short seminars with experts in a variety of fields.

Grant Larson from Porsche gave us a fascinating look into the design and development of the 997. I didn’t know that the profits from the then-new Boxster and the 996 led to the redesign which became the 997. The Tony Hatter talked about the GT1 race car, and how it was built without the aid of computers. We can hardly imagine that today, right? Other topics included discussions about the new Macan EV and the state of the Porsche market. We got to meet the presenters up close and personal in a relaxed atmosphere, and no questions seemed to be off limits.

Another events at the Parade is the Art Show with a variety of classes for paintings, photos, sculptures and other media. A big congratulations go out to Jennie and Aaron Hible from St. Louis Region for taking first and third class with their works of art. Jennie received the third place ribbon for her flower display made from rolled up pages from a Panorama magazine, and Aaron received first place in his class for a reflective photo of a 911 in a hubcap of a 356.

Other events that go on at Parade are tours of a variety of locations in and around Birmingham. Similar to what we do here in the St. Louis area. Sue and I signed up to attend, and be a sweep car in a tour to a historic resort to a historic resort called Purcell Farms. We gathered in the morning

at Classic Car Motoring’s facility ten minutes from the hotel. Classic Car Motoring is a high-end auto repair facility with a hugh parking lot, and they allowed us to walk around inside prior to the tour. To say it was impressive is an understatement. It could have been a tour by itself! They had rows of beautiful GT cars and other rare Porsche models all over the place.

The tour took the scenic route to the farm, and we were surprised how hilly the surrounding area is east of Birmingham. Purcell Farms is a 3000 acre ranch that has been around since the early 1900’s. After a few generations, the family decided to move from longhorn steers and fertilizer to the “elegant rustic” resort it is today. There are still a few longhorn steers, but it’s easier to find a tee time at their five-star golf course or visit their spa or wedding venue. We had a great buffet lunch overlooking the beautiful rolling hills, then made it back to the hotel on our own.

You can easily suffer from sensory overload with everything to participate in at a Parade. So later in the week, we decided to throttle back a bit and check out some of the sites in Birmingham. We did the tourist bit and visited the Sloss Blast Furnace historic site. Birmingham was a cast iron center of the South from the 1880’s to 1970. So instead of bulldozing it and building a mall, they wisely kept it and turned it into a neat educational and historical site. Very cool for an old engineer like me. Then we checked out their really nice, and free Art Museum.

Even though it’s later in the week, it’s still a Porsche car show wherever you go. I’ve included some pics of Porsches lined up outside the hotel before an informal run, It’s pretty cool to see models you don’t typically see around our neck of the woods....

By Saturday, most vendors and their swag are gone. The Goodie Store closed at noon, and the only thing left was the Parade of Porsches to Barber Motorsports Park and the Volunteer Luncheon. We met at Classic Car

like this white slant-nose 930.... and yes, the interior IS lime green.

Motoring again...this time nose to tail. It’s about 9:30 am, and there are over 250 Porsches in the lot waiting to go. After the compulsory Safety Briefing, we got a Police escort drive to Barber. There was an HPDE going on this weekend, and we got to take a parade lap during

the lunch break. We snaked through the hills of Irondale and onto the well-manicured grounds of Barber. Weaving around the perimeter road and onto the track, it is an endless sight of cool cars both in front and behind us. Barber is a very nice facility and great track, and it’s weird to me to keep it civil. But, we are not part of the HPDE, so we have to, right?

After the single Parade lap, we head back to the hotel for the Volunteer Luncheon. If you volunteer during Parade week, you are treated to a nice lunch with lots of giveaways. I find it easy to volunteer at these events because 1) they need the assistance, and 2) there are so many options to find fun things to do. It also gets you into the door for the more popular events, too. Besides a lot of PCA-labelled clothing, they did give away two sets of tires and another cruise on the Princess Lines. We didn’t win any new tires, but received a few more hats and shirts...just what I needed. Mark Shevitz was the MC again this year for all the banquets, and he is always gracious to us and remembers his “St. Louis roots”. All that’s left now is to pack up more things than we started with and head back home. Next year’s Parade will be in Oklahoma City, and I think that is even a little closer to St. Louis. If you have not attended one before, you owe it to yourself...at least once.

Redemption is Sweet

Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen

To say that Porsche had a lot riding on this year’s Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen at Watkins Glen would be an understatement. Porsche Penske was the first car to take the checkered flag last year at the 2023 running of the famed race in western New York, only to have the win taken away when the cars’ wear plates under the cars were determined to have worn thinner than the rules allowed, leading to the Porsches’ disqualifications and erasing the team’s hard fought race.

So the team was determined to redeem itself this year, and came prepared for another hard fought race. The Porsche Penske 963s battled at the head of the pack throughout the entire race, but it was not an easy race as the Acura and Cadillac GTP competitors were not about to give up the win easily. Rain plagued the racers several times during the race, but the skies really opened up with about an hour and a half to go before the checkered flag fell. The race was halted for more than 40 minutes as pelting rain made visibility impossible and water flowed over the track in several places, but the rain let up with a little over 40 minutes to go. Racing was still a challenge. Several yellow flag periods slowed the race pace as the competitors relied on rain tires to give them some sort of traction on the rain slickened track. With less than 20 minutes to go, the green flag was finally waved to let the racers battle it out for the final minutes of the race. The Porsche Penske 963s were running 2nd and 5th when the race resumed. The leading Acura could not heat up its tires as the green flag waved, and the leading Acura slipped back to 5th place just moments after the race resumed. Bold moves by Filipe Nasr and Dane Cameron in the #7 963 and Mathieu Jaminet and Nick Tandy at the wheel of the #6 963 resulted in the two Porsche Penskes book ending the podium with 1st and 3rd place finishes...and this time, the results held. Redemption at the Glen was sweet, indeed.

Next race for the Porsche Penske 963s on the IMSA WeatherTech calendar - the Chevrolet Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (formerly known as Mosport) on Sunday, July 13th.

Porsche to race in Formula E thru 2030

P0rsche has signed letters of intent to continue its support of the Formula E racing series thru 2030. Porsche AG joins Nissan and Jaguar in announcing that the companies will field new 4th generation electric race cars to compete in series beginning with the 2026/2027 season. More teams are expected to voice their support for the race series before the end of the year. The rules for the 4th Generation cars allow for the use of part-time all-wheel drive and an increase in power output from the present 350 kW to 600 kW.

Don’t be surprised if Porsche attempts to use the series as a potential source of income through the sale of cars to customer teams. Right now, Porsche supplies the Porsche 99X cars and support for its Porsche Motorsports sponsored team and a second customer team for Andretti Global Motorsports Formula E.
