Atlanta Dance Medicine is Atlanta’s premier physical therapy practice dedicated to working with dancers and performing artists. WELCOME FROM THE FINE ARTS DEPARTMENT September 25, 2020

Welcome to the class of 2024, all our new families, and our entire St. Pius X community!

Whether you are a regular patron or a first-time attendee, we are thrilled to have your support! During this unique time, we have worked tirelessly to ensure our performance season remained in place. As the old saying goes, "the show must go on"! For some disciplines, this might mean a virtual event or livestreamed performance, whereas for others it might be an outdoor performance or a limited in-person concert in the Young Center. Regardless of the format, we are dedicated to providing our students and community with a top-notch experience that has come to be expected of our fine arts department.

While the future may be uncertain, our department is uniquely prepared to adapt and thrive regardless of the circumstances. The Fine Arts continue to provide our students with opportunities that engage and foster growth in the different art disciplines at St. Pius X while following all protocols necessary to provide the safest experience possible. We maintain a strong, focused education that utilizes technology and creative strategies, and facilitates continued growth in all areas of the arts. While much may change in the way we do things in our classrooms, one thing remains constant and that is our continued commitment to building strong artists and technicians. We look forward to our performance season and what is surely going to be an exciting year!

BAND The Marching Golden Lions, our most visible group, rehearses and performs regularly during the fall. Students in the MGL support the football team on Friday nights and perform competitively on Saturdays in October. Our concert/symphonic band program performs multiple concerts throughout the year, consistently earning high ratings at Large Group Performance Evaluations in the Spring. Our jazz band brings together students who have a passion for jazz and performs at our spring concert. Our students represent the band program at district and statewide events such as the University of Georgia's January Band Festival, GMEA District Honor Band and All-State, Governor's Honors.

Faculty Bio Ian LaBreck Band Director

Ian LaBreck is currently Director of Bands at St. Pius X Catholic High School. Before serving as director of bands, he was the assistant band director at St. Pius from 2015-2019. A native of St. Marys, GA, he graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree in music education from the University of Georgia in 2015 where he studied trumpet with Dr. Brandon Craswell. While at UGA, he served as a Section Leader and Band Captain in the Redcoat Marching Band. Mr. LaBreck also served as the president of the Epsilon Lambda chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia National Men’s Music Fraternity. As an educator, Mr. LaBreck works with the Metropolitan Atlanta Youth Wind Ensemble and serves actively as a clinician and adjudicator around the state of Georgia. His professional affiliations include Georgia Music Educators’ Association and the National Association for Music Education.

Jose Carmona-Almonte Percussion Director Jose studied music at Columbus State University earning a Bachelor of the Arts degree in Percussion Performance, and a minor in Audio Technology.

Eyoel Endashaw Drumline Instructor Eyoel graduated from St. Pius X in 2015. This is his fifth year assisting the drumline.

The St. Pius X Women's and Men's ensembles are open to all students, grades 9-12, who wish to sing in a group setting, no audition required. New to 2019 is the addition of the Advanced Mixed Ensemble, an auditioned group of singers with a prerequisite of at least one year in the St. Pius X choral program.

Performances include a Fall Concert, Christmas Concert, Georgia Music Educators Association large group performance evaluation, Spring Concert, St. Pius X School Masses, and assemblies for Veteran’s Day, Black History month, Christmas, Easter, and other invitational performances.

Faculty Bio

Millie Turek Choral Director For the past 40 years, Ms. Turek has taught chorus and musical theatre in Georgia middle and high schools in the Atlanta area. In addition to her work at St. Pius X, she is the associate music director and accompanist for the Atlanta Young Singers (AYS).

Throughout her career, Ms. Turek has served as clinician and accompanist for all-state choruses and honor choirs in the southeast. Choruses under her direction have performed at Georgia Music Educators Association state and American Choral Directors Association division conferences. Her work with the AYS has taken her on performance tours throughout Europe, Canada, and South Africa. She has a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Florida State University, a Master of Music from Georgia State University, and Kodaly Teacher training certification from Westminster Choir College and Portland State University. Her musical theatre experience includes productions from children's theatre to middle and high school productions to community and professional theatre companies. As musical director, she has received nominations for the Shuler Hensley Awards and performed at the Georgia Thespian Conference. She is in her fifth year as Musical Director for the Pius Players.

DANCE

The dance program at St. Pius X is designed to teach the fundamentals of ballet and jazz. Students also gain an introduction to modern, contemporary, and cultural dance forms. Students further develop their technique through classroom combinations, musical phrasing, and choreography. The curriculum focuses on ballet vocabulary, dance history, critical analysis, choreography, and performance. All students perform in the annual Spring Dance Concert and the NOVO Choreography Project. In addition, the Dance Company is featured in fall and winter performances, and the Dance Team performs at all home basketball games.

Faculty Bio

Lisa O’Connor Director of Dance Mrs. O’Connor brings a wealth of training and professional experience to St. Pius X. She trained with the Gainesville Ballet and danced professionally with the Ruth Mitchell Dance Theater. She spent her summers studying with the Joffrey Ballet, Charleston Ballet Theater, and Lexington Ballet. She has been a dance educator for over 25 years, and she has taught at St. Pius X since 1998. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction, and certification in dance education for K-12 schools. Mrs. O’Connor received the St. Pius X Excellence in Teaching Award in 2003 and 2008. She is the newly named Fine Arts Coordinator and provides support for the Fine Arts.

Madison Schrama Assistant Director

For the past five years, Madison Schrama has been teaching dance to children of all ages and in various styles including Ballet, Pointe, Contemporary, Modern, Jazz, Tap and Hip hop. Ms. Schrama received her training at Georgia Academy of Dance & the Performing Arts where she performed in multiple classical and contemporary ballets and danced soloist roles such as Dew Drop in The Nutcracker and Peasant Pas Des Deux in Giselle. Ms. Schrama received additional training at the American Ballet Theatre and the Kaatsbaan Extreme Ballet summer intensives. Ms. Schrama holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance from the University of Georgia with K-12 certification.

GUITAR

The guitar program consists of three levels: beginning, intermediate, and advanced. All of the guitar classes participate in the annual Christmas and spring concerts. Advanced Guitar participates and performs in many concerts and festivals throughout the year in addition to recording an EP in a professional recording studio each year.

Community outreach is a mainstay of the guitar program. Students perform/volunteer regularly at retirement communities, shelters, hospitals, and neighboring schools. The guitar program has been honored to work with many accomplished guest artists, most notably the Grammy Award-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Grammy Award-winning David Russel, and Milos Karadaglic.

Faculty Bio

Brion Kennedy Director of Guitar and Department Head Earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Music from the University of Georgia, Mr. Kennedy studied under the guidance of renowned guitar educator John Sutherland. During his time at UGA, Mr. Kennedy also studied music composition under the tutelage of Dr. Adrian Childs. Mr. Kennedy is currently an owner of the Athens School of Music, where he previously taught, and Vogel Audio, commercial music production, and sound design company.

Mr. Kennedy is a member of the National Association for Music Educators and the Guitar Foundation of America. Mr. Kennedy served as the Guitar Chair for the Georgia Music Educators Association from 2017 to 2019.

Mr. Kennedy began teaching at St. Pius X in the fall of 2010. In May of 2013, Mr. Kennedy received his Master's Degree in Secondary Education. Mr. Kennedy has served as the Fine Arts Department Chair since 2013. He received his Education Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership in May of 2018.

TECH CREW The St. Pius Tech Crew is the magic "behind the scenes" of all St. Pius Fine Arts performances. Tech Crew members will learn about all aspects of Technical Theater including lighting, live sound, set building, stage management, and this year how to bring that magic beyond the walls through livestreams! We'll get behind state-of-theart equipment in the Young Center and learn what it takes to be a theater ninja. Strong communication skills and a team mentality are the only requirements to join. Participation in Tech Crew is a path to lettering!

MUSIC TECHNOLOGY The SPX Music Technology program is among the fastest-growing programs at the school. The modern world depends on digital audio technology now more than ever, and we’re training the next wave of audio engineers right here in our state-of-the-art digital lab and theater.

In Music Technology I and II, we’ll not only explore the realms of studio music production, podcasting, and film post-production, but we’ll also take a look at the live audio environment, which includes sound reinforcement for live music and theater. Additionally, students will have access to our new state-of-the-art Young Center theater sound system, which includes over 96 combined channels of digital and analog audio!

Keith Cordell Director of Music Technology Currently, in his second year at St. Pius, Mr. Cordell is teaching Music Technology as well as serving as the Technical Director for the school.

After graduating from Marist School in 2001, he received his B.S. in Recording Industry Management - Production and Technology from Middle Tennessee State University in 2005. Since then he has been working in all aspects of the music and recording industries as a performer, teacher, and engineer.

Lindsey Farrell Assistant Tech Director After graduating from William and Mary in 2014 with a BA in Religious Studies, she completed her MA from Walden University in Nonprofit Management and leadership and is entering her 5th year at St. Pius X as a Theology Teacher.

Participating on and off the stage in theatre since high school, most recently assisting the amazing Pius Players she's honored, and thrilled, to be able to work with these amazing behind the scenes "ninjas" as a part of the Tech Crew team to continue to highlight the incredible talent of our students in the spotlight by ensuring it's always turned on!

THEATRE

The St. Pius X Theatre Program provides students with skills that last a lifetime. Students gain the ability to work collaboratively, to think critically, communicate effectively and to develop social-emotional awareness. The St. Pius X Theatre program provides a wide variety of courses for students to understand the different artistic roles of the individuals who create and produce theatre, to learn the fundamental skills of acting, directing and technical theatre, and to become familiar with theatre history and theatrical literature and the aesthetics of live performance. Students may audition for the Advanced Drama Company each spring. The Advanced Drama Company performs throughout the year. All St. Pius X Catholic High School students may audition for the annual musical.

Faculty Bio Tracey Buot Director of Theatre

Tracey Buot is thrilled to be the new Theatre Director for St. Pius X Catholic High School! Mrs. Buot has a career in the fine arts that spans over 27 years. She has extensive professional acting, directing, and design credits. Her teaching and directing experience includes the University of Virginia, The Westminster Schools, Heritage Repertory Theatre, Acrosstown Repertory Theatre, The Edge Ensemble, Live Arts Theatre, Ballet Rotaru, Oak Grove Young Children’s School, Zone of Light Studio, Charlottesville Children’s Theatre, Summer Institute for the Gifted at Emory University, and most recently Cambridge High School where she served as the Theatre Director and the Performing Arts Department Chair.

Mrs. Buot holds a Master of Fine Arts in Acting Performance from the University of Virginia, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performance and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science both from the University of Florida.

Her professional memberships include the Educational Theatre Association, Southeastern Theatre Conference, Georgia Theatre Conference, Actor’s Equity Candidacy, and International Thespians. Mrs. Buot is married with 2 sons. Both of her sons are proud graduates of St. Pius X Catholic High School (Howell aka H ‘15 and Hunter ‘18).

Avery Neelam Theatre Assistant Avery Neelam was born and raised in Lilburn, Georgia, and has enjoyed theater and the arts since she was young. As a child, she participated in various plays and musicals, including "Mississippi My Home" and "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever". Ms. Neelam took theater classes in high school and was cast (somewhat ironically) as a teacher in the one-act play "This Is a Test". As an adult, Ms. Neelam developed a passion for languages and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and a Bachelor of Science in Education for World Languages from the University of Georgia. This is her fifth year teaching Spanish, and she has been teaching at St. Pius X since Fall 2019. Though she teaches Spanish, Ms. Neelam has never lost her passion for the arts. She is excited to assist with Theatre this year and is looking forward to a great year!

Corinna Brannon Director of Visual Arts

Corinna Brannon was born in Jamaica and educated in both the United Kingdom and the United States, Ms. Brannon holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, London, certificate in postgraduate studies at Central St.Martins College, London, and a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Printmaking from The University of Georgia. She is currently a member of The Atlanta Printmaker's Studio and her work has been exhibited in a number of juried exhibitions across the United States and in London. Ms. Brannon is certified to teach Visual Art K-12, and she has taught at St. Pius X since 2000.

In the visual art classes, students are taught with the belief that we are all born with an ability to appreciate and create art. Students are expected to use the best of their abilities involving learned skills, creativity, and imagination. Each student is encouraged to reach their individual potential through the exploration of a variety of mediums, group critiques, and the study of art history. Above all, students are encouraged to develop a sensitivity to and an appreciation of art.

Students may develop their artistic abilities through a wide range of classes.

The St. Pius X Annual Juried Exhibition The St. Pius X Juried Exhibition is an annual event. The exhibition provides the student body the opportunity to submit their work to be judged by an outside juror. Our AP students’ work is featured every spring, and all students are welcome to participate in our after school club, Art Association.
