From the Interim President

Dear Golden Lion Families,

After I agreed to take on the Interim President role at St. Pius X, I was reminded of what I know to be true: Pius is a special place. I was blown away by all the calls, emails, and letters of support I received from our community.

I grew up dreaming

of attending Pius, and I am honored and humbled to serve in this role. As a child, I went to Pius summer camps. As a high schooler, I had legendary teachers like Ms. Dalton, Ms. Klister, Mr. Brisbane, and Father Lopez. And as a senior, I walked across the stage at graduation and shook the hand of then-Principal Mr. Steve Spellman, one of the best leaders I have ever known. I am proud of this school and look forward to leading our community this year during our leadership transition.

Families often ask me the simple question, “What makes St. Pius special?” First and foremost, we are a Catholic school, placing God at the center of everything we do. We have the unique opportunity as educators to show our students God’s love for them, both in times of joy and sorrow, because no matter what happens, we all belong to the Lord.

Second, Pius is a special school because of our overwhelming sense of family. March of 2020 began a tumultuous time for us all, and our Pius family has been tested over the last few years. I think it is vital that we fight for our family culture. If I have one stick in my hand, I can easily break it. But If I have a pile of sticks together in my hand, I cannot break them. Similarly, we are at our best when each of us works together to do what is best for our kids. If we work together, our family cannot be broken.

We have many great things happening as we approach the new school year. Our Ring the Bells capital campaign construction is underway, and our students will be returning to a fully renovated

library and a new rear entrance. Construction has also begun on the new lobby and front entrance, and work on the new field houses start in August. On behalf of the current and future students, faculty, staff, and families that will benefit from these efforts, thank you for investing in this important project. We have not yet crossed the finish line, so please consider how you might help us ring the bells of victory for St. Pius!

In May, we celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2022. Dr. Susy Ajoy Alfonso ’86, our Distinguished Alumni, gave our graduates great advice for the future as 265 new alumni walked across the stage. This August, we have the privilege of welcoming 280 freshmen and 10 new upperclassmen to the Golden Lions family. Our alumni base and our new student families continue to grow and thrive, and I hope you will join us on campus to witness the Pius family spirit in action. I look forward to a great upcoming school year.

“We have the unique opportunity as educators to show our students God’s love for them, both in times of joy and sorrow, because no matter what happens, we all belong to the Lord.”
4 SUMMER/FALL 2022

From the Principal

Dear St. Pius X Families and Friends,

A summer spent with family and friends allows all of us to relax, recharge, and gear up for the new academic year.

I’m confident both new and returning students will return refreshed and eager to learn and grow

in the Pius tradition of excellence. I look forward to the great opportunities ahead of us for the 2022–2023 school year.

Congratulations to the graduates of the Class of 2022 and their families who celebrated this milestone achievement with a beautiful Baccalaureate Mass and commencement ceremony in May. We wish our newest alumni the best of luck and much success in the future.

We are excited that our Ring the Bells Capital Campaign is underway. Safety and security upgrades and the library renovation anchor this first phase of construction. A new, secure front lobby and rear entrance will help safeguard students and prevent unauthorized individuals from entering the heart of our campus. Students will begin using the new gated area near the Roar Store on the first day of school. The new lobby should be completed sometime in October. In the meantime, the front gates will be locked when school starts each morning to secure the main buildings.

The 8,000 square-foot Flannery O’Connor Library is being modernized to offer more usable space for our students and faculty while retaining the essential functions for studying and learning. Considered “the school’s living room,” the new design embraces an open, airy plan with plenty of comfortable space for students to learn and relax. The completely renovated space will have flexible seating options, including collaboration stairs, soft

seating, booths, and easy-to-move tables and chairs. In addition, students and faculty will have access to small meeting rooms, a printing station, a computer lab, and a dedicated classroom.

On behalf of the Pius community, I extend a special welcome to the newest members of our family, the freshmen class of 2026. We are a school community that strives to form students of strong character and deep faith. A Pius education leads students to college and eventually to Heaven. Pius is a special place, and each new student plays a role in furthering our rich history.

I am honored to be principal of this great school and look forward to working with students, faculty, and staff to make the next school year amazing!

Blessings,

“We are a school community that strives to form students of strong character and deep faith. A Pius education leads students to college and eventually to Heaven.”

Graduation 2022

Congratulations to the Class of 2022, the 64th graduating class of St. Pius X! Following two school years altered by COVID-19, this class enjoyed all of the traditional graduation events: Honors Assembly, Baccalaureate Mass, and a commencement ceremony at full capacity.

On April 29, the Honors Assembly recognized students of all grades for their hard work in the academic arena. On May 12, the class of 265 gathered for the first Baccalaureate Mass at the newlybuilt Holy Vietnamese Martyrs Catholic Church in Norcross. St. Pius X Chaplain, Reverend Michael Bremer, gave the homily and concelebrated with a number of priests from the Archdiocese of Atlanta.

At the graduation ceremony on May 14, Mr. John Favier welcomed the class and their families, and seniors Bianca Cardona, Kelly McGraw, and Gracie Rosenberg sang God Bless America. Principal Edye Simpson introduced Salutatorian Maximilian “Maxi” Brogi, describing him as “...a young man of intelligence, diligence, and academic excellence...he is a good person who genuinely cares about the welfare of others.” Maxi earned the highest score in the state of Georgia on the National Spanish Exam in 2019 and a perfect score on the ACT. A National Merit Scholar, Maxi has earned the President’s Award each year during his career at St. Pius. Maxi is a four-year member of the varsity swim and dive team, played water polo, and was a member of the track and field team. He was Vice President of the National Honor Society. He volunteers as a teacher at LaAmistad, an after-

“I’ve only now started to realize that St. Pius X isn’t just the four years you spend here. It’s the siblings, parents, friends, neighbors, cousins, community, that have come before, and will come after. Each of us, and our class as a whole, is part of something greater.”

school program that prepares Latino students and families for success through academic and life enrichment programs.

Maxi described the impact that the pandemic had on the Class of 2022, saying, “I know no one wants to talk about COVID anymore, but not to do so would be a disservice to everything our class has worked so hard for. Class of 2022, this is who we are. This is our legacy...Someone had to carry the torch from one end of this thing to the other. And that’s the gift we’ve given; people will look back and thank us for it.”

Director of Alumni Relations Karoline Brennan ’82 awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award to Dr. Susy Ajoy Alfonso ’86, describing her as “a humble woman who embodies the beloved characteristics of our fine school…Pride, Integrity, Unity, and Sacrifice.” In her inspiring speech, Dr. Alfonso described how, as a St. Pius student, the school community rallied around her when her mother died from cancer. Dr. Alfonso shared her professional

She said, “What should have taken me seven years took 11, but I did it my way...Just because you are walking a bit of a different path and a different timeline, don’t let anyone minimize or tell you you can’t do something you’re passionate about.” (Scan the QR code on the bottom of this page to hear Dr. Alfonso’s speech in its entirety.)

Following the Distinguished Alumni Award, Valedictorian Katherine “Katie” Graebner spoke to the class. Katie maintained a 103.88 GPA while completing 13 Advanced Placement and seven honors classes during her career at St. Pius X. Katie was a finalist in the Governor’s Honor Program and is a National Merit Scholar. She created the Mu Alpha Theta chapter at St. Pius X, a math tutoring program for St. Pius students who need extra help. Principal Edye Simpson said, “Katie personifies the mission of our school and embodies those qualities that we hope will be evident in all of these graduates: curiosity for life-long learning, a life of service, and motivation to improve the world around them.”

“I will miss you all more than you know, but I cannot wait for you to meet your new classmates and professors...Treat all of them with respect. In the little things, say ‘please,’ hold the door, and smile. In the big things, sacrifice your time and energy to serve others.”

In her speech, Katie applauded the Class of 2022 for the qualities they have already displayed as students: persistence, dedication, selflessness, and compassion. Katie asked her classmates to stay humble and kind, adding, “Do not forget where you came from. These past four years, you have received the foundations for success, and you have used them to make your time here successful. Before we amaze the world with our future successes, let’s take one last moment to remember our roots.” A photo slideshow, created by Katie, was presented to the song “Humble and Kind” by Tim McGraw. Katie included every Class of 2022 graduate in her slideshow.

Bishop Schlesinger then presented the annual Archbishop’s Award, which is selected using student input. Each senior chooses one male and one female student whom they feel best exemplifies living the Catholic faith both in and out of school, and then seniors vote in an on-line ballot. This year’s Archbishop’s Award recipients are Anna Maloof and Michael Schlueter.

Before he awarded each graduate their diploma, Principal Edye Simpson spoke to the students and parents. In a touching moment, she asked the Class of 2022 to stand, face their parents, and give thanks to them by a round of applause.

It is with a mixture of sadness and excitement that we bid a fond farewell to the Class of 2022. We know they will leave their marks on the world, just as they have left us with an enduring legacy of excellence. We pray that God always guides their way, and we wish each of them a lifetime of happiness and success.

2022 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient

This year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Dr. Susy Ajoy Alfonso ’86, is the Medical Director for the Physician Assistant Program at Emory, and an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. She received her undergraduate degree in Biology from Emory University before earning her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. She completed residency training at Emory, and in 2009 received a master’s degree in Healthcare Management from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Recently named a “Top Doc” by Atlanta magazine for the seventh consecutive year, she has been a member of The Emory Clinic since 2001 and has served in many leadership capacities. Most recently, Dr. Alfonso was selected for the Medical Association of Georgia’s Physician Leadership Academy.

Dr. Alfonso is committed to service. She and her husband Raul lead an annual mission trip to the Dominican Republic where she works with orphans with catastrophic brain injuries. She has served farm workers in South Georgia through an annual outreach for the last 25 years, and she volunteers in two clinics which help under-served families in the Metro Atlanta area. She is an active parishioner at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church where she is a Eucharistic Minister. She served on the Advisory Board at St. Pius X for nine years. When her two sons, Raul ’09 and Miguel ’14, were students at St. Pius X, she volunteered on many parent committees and also served on the St. Pius X Alumni Board.

Through Dr. Alfonso’s professional achievement, commitment to our community, concern for young people, and overall pursuit of excellence, she truly lives the ideals and values of St. Pius X Catholic High School.

The address delivered by Dr. Susy Ajoy Alfonso ’86, was both memorable and inspirational. Scan this QR code to enjoy a video of her address.

Campus Ministry

St. Pius X Welcomes a New Campus Ministry Team!

Ms. Susan Baker is grateful for her unique faith journey. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, her family moved to Georgia when she was two years old. While she was baptized Catholic, her family didn't attend Mass regularly. When Ms. Baker was a freshman in high school, she started the RCIA process, and on Easter Vigil in 1992, she received the Sacraments of Confirmation and the Holy Eucharistic. The instruction she received through this process allowed her to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of her faith.

Ms. Baker attended the University of West Georgia and graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor's of Science in Political Science with a concentration in Economics and American History. After a few years of trying to follow her own path, Ms. Baker finally followed where God was leading her by volunteering with the youth group at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Sharpsburg. She was eventually hired as Youth Minister and spent five amazing years there. In 2012, she started work at St. Philip Benizi in Jonesboro. Ten years later, Ms. Baker was ready for a new challenge and growth opportunity, and now feels blessed to be the Director of Campus Ministry at St Pius X.

With a new Campus Ministry team, Ms. Baker and Ms. Lizzie Bond are excited for an active year. In addition to the Domini Sumus fall retreat, boys’ and girls’ retreats, and class pilgrimages, Campus Ministry will be hosting Bible/book studies during lunch periods. Mission trips and March for Life are returning this year, and the team is looking into new activities as well.

Mrs. Abby Bettencourt, who served as the Director of Campus Ministry at St. Pius X from 2016-2021, is returning as the Campus Ministry Coordinator of Pastoral Services. Mrs. Bettencourt will be responsible for the coordination and scheduling of Priests on campus this school year. Meeting the needs of the community of teens, parents, alumni, faculty, and staff is the Campus Ministry team’s top priority and they are looking forward to the years to come!

Ms. Lizzie Bond was born and raised in Johns Creek, Georgia. Ms. Bond has been Catholic her whole life, but it wasn’t until high school that she began to personally know the Lord and embrace the faith.

She attended Georgia College & State University for two years before taking a gap year to serve as a fulltime missionary with Life Teen. Through her transformative year of service, she fell in love with the charism of hospitality for even the most vulnerable populations in the church.

Ms. Bond continued on to finish her undergraduate degree in Social Work at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio where she spent some of the most impactful years of her life. While at Franciscan, she desired to bring greater glory to God in mind, body, and spirit by leading worship as well as helping develop a mental health program for student athletes.

The Lord guided her all across the country to lead worship at retreats, summer camps, and multiple Steubenville & Life Teen Conferences. During this time, Ms. Bond moved to Nashville and received her Masters of Science in Social Work and her School Social Work License at the University of Tennessee while working at a Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility. Ms. Bond loved spending each day working with high school students but missed being able to speak with them about her first great loves — the Lord and her Catholic faith.

Ms. Bond recently moved back to Georgia to begin working at St. Pius X in Campus Ministry as well as teaching Theology. She’s excited to bring all that she has learned in her beautiful adventure of life with Christ to the community of St Pius X.

Welcome to

Celebrating our Retirees

Thanks to the creativity and passion of Roar Store Manager Mrs. Sally King, St. Pius X boasts a school store with merchandise rivaling that of any trendy Atlanta boutique. Mrs. King began managing the Roar Store in 2003, greeting every visitor with her warm smile, expertise, and a listening ear. Mrs. King was often one of the first staff members parents met after their child enrolled, and her welcoming spirit was the perfect representation of St. Pius X.

Prior to the use of e-Books, Mrs. King managed all of the textbooks needed for the school year, which was a monumental undertaking. Each year, Mrs. King strove to make sure the Roar Store was up on the latest spirit wear trends, routinely attending merchandise trade shows, keeping up with the offerings at other schools’ stores, and even gathering student input. Mrs. King, the mother of three St. Pius X graduates, always put the students of Pius first. Amid the wonderful items in the Roar Store, a chat with Mrs. King was the students’ favorite store offering.

Ms. Theresa Johnson began teaching Theology at St. Pius X in 2008. Her colleagues describe her as a quiet warrior for the church with a distinguished elegance. She knew her theology, knew and loved her students (who she fondly referred to as her “little lambs”), and was highly respected. Fellow Theology teacher Mrs. Amy Williams said, “Theresa is the person in the department we go to for her gentle wisdom and her stories. She is a brilliant women, prayerful and loved beyond measure. No challenge is too great for Theresa. Don’t let her gentle spirit fool you. She is strong, a fighter, and has a heart for justice. She loves all God’s children and her students experience God’s love through Theresa each day.”

For 22 years, Mrs. Marylyn Tuura meticulously, quietly, and faithfully served the St. Pius X community as the Assistant Business Manager of Accounts Payable. An unending flow of invoices crossed her desk, and Mrs. Tuura made certain that all were paid in a timely, responsible manner. Mrs. Tuura often quipped that her job was very similar to doing laundry: just when you think everything is clean and folded, you find another dirty sock in your closet! Hers has been a labor of love with careful attention to detail.

Mrs. Tuura and her husband Tom love to visit their two children, both St. Pius graduates, whenever possible. In her free time, she can be found hiking and camping in state and national parks. But her Catholic faith has always been nearest and dearest to Mrs. Tuura’s heart. She took the time each work day to attend Mass in the chapel. In many ways, her work at Pius has been a perfect reflection of her faith: resolute, positive, and steadfast.

Dr. Doug Wagner began teaching math at St. Pius X in 2014, but his teaching career spans 41 years. Dr. Wagner is a proud Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket, where he played football and was an assistant coach. He is a life-long learner who became a pilot and built his own plane. Loved and respected by his students and colleagues alike, he is kind, humble, and willing to go the extra mile. His fellow math teacher Connie Fish said, “Doug is one of the best examples of a true Christian who truly walks his faith. Doug is always seeking to become a better teacher and human. He is joyful and calm, especially in the face of adversity. He is a loyal friend, a compassionate teacher, and has a multitude of ‘dad’ jokes!”

Welcome SPX Class of 2026!

New Apple Mac Lab

St. Pius X will be installing a dedicated Apple Mac lab in time for the start of the 2022-2023 school year thanks to the community’s generous support of the Annual Fund. Due to the increased demand for courses that teach video and graphic design, as well as our growing Music Technology program, 25 new iMac "all in one" computers have been purchased. The new lab replaces the Windows/Mac mini-hybrid classroom that currently exists. Windows and Mac computers are heavily utilized in the business world, so this will greatly increase the exposure that St. Pius X students have to both environments as they prepare for college and their future careers. St. Pius X will continue to examine the demand for courses that utilize certain technologies to determine the composition of general use computers on campus.

Recent Graduates Take on Europe

In 2012, Mr. Dennis Ruggiero, St. Pius X Theology teacher, began a tradition of taking seniors on a European post-graduation trip. This year marks the seventh trip for Mr. Ruggiero (two trips were canceled due to COVID-19). Mr. Ruggiero teaches a class called “Holocaust and Genocide,” and this trip provides students the opportunity to visit many of the places they learn about in this class. The itinerary typically includes Berlin, Nuremberg, and Munich, and one other city like Rome, Paris, Salzburg, or Prague. This year, 28 graduates made the trip, including two students from the Class of 2020. Joining Mr. Ruggiero as chaperones were St. Pius Theology teacher Mrs. Amy Foster Williams ’85 and Fine Arts Chair Mr. Ian LaBreck.

This year’s trip began with a two-day tour of Berlin to witness the impact of two periods of history, WWII and the Cold War, with visits to Checkpoint Charlie, the Berlin Wall, and other historical places from the Nazi period. The graduates then traveled by train to the medieval town of Nuremberg where they visited the Nazi party rally fields, the courthouse where the Nuremberg trials were held, and the Nuremberg Castle.

From there they traveled south to the Dachau concentration camp, which was a somber experience they will never forget. Next, they spent two days in Munich, the capital of Bavaria. The trip concluded in the eternal city of Rome where they celebrated Sunday Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica.

This trip is not sponsored by St. Pius X. An application must be submitted to attend, and all seniors are invited to apply.

Golden Lions Athletics

Yearly Sports Wrap-Up

The 2021-2022 sports season at St. Pius X concluded another successful campaign, as 21 of 22 teams advanced to the state playoffs. The Golden Lions captured three AAAAA state championships in volleyball, girls’ cross country, and girls’ swim and dive, while finishing as state runners-up in boys’ cross country, boys’ soccer, boys’ tennis, and girls’ golf. In addition to the success at the state level, St. Pius X also brought home ten region titles, and finished second in AAAAA in the Georgia Athletic Directors Association Region Director’s Cup standings.

The fall sports set the tone with a strong start. Volleyball won its second state championship in four years, finishing 52-1 overall. Girls’ cross country took its third consecutive state crown. Boys’ cross country finished as state runners-up. Competition cheer won its second straight region championship, and softball finished as region runners-up and advanced to state playoffs for the third straight season.

Winter and spring sports followed suit with each sport advancing to the state playoffs. Girls’ swim and dive captured its first ever state championship. Diver Julia Herring ’23 scored a 664.10, winning the individual championship and setting a new state record. Boys’ swim and dive placed third at the state meet.

In other winter sports, boys’ basketball won its sixth straight region title, the longest active streak in GHSA boys’ basketball. The team finished 28-4, the second most wins in school history before bowing out of the state tournament in the second round. Girls’ basketball finished 19-11, making the state playoffs for the twelfth consecutive year, and advancing to the second round before being knocked out of the playoffs. Wrestling advanced to the state duals and sophomore Gene Smith ’24 qualified for the state traditional tournament.

Spring sports were highlighted by three state runner-up finishes. Girls’ golf had the highest finish at a state championship, placing second behind a third-place effort from Betsy Sullivan ’25 and sixth-place finish from Neve Thanner ’22. Boys’ soccer advanced to the state championship to secure a state runners-up trophy. Boys’ tennis finished in second place in the state tournament.

Baseball won the region championship for the first time since 2015, advancing to the second round of the state tournament en route to posting a 22-12 record. Boys’ golf was led at the state championship by Shaun Cook ’22, who placed fourth overall with a one-under-par performance. Jack Woods ’23 placed second in the shot put at the boys’ track and field state meet, while Liza Love ’23 finished fifth in the high jump to lead the girls’ team. Girls’ soccer and girls’ tennis each advanced to the state quarterfinals and both lacrosse teams made it to the second round of the state tournament.

As the sports season wrapped up, teams were already preparing for the 2022-2023 year with summer workouts beginning in June. Very soon, the fall sports will again look to set the tone in August for next year, as the Golden Lions make the move to up to Class 6A to join Region 4-AAAAAA with Dunwoody, Lakeside, Marist, North Atlanta, Riverwood, and South Cobb.

On May 11, 2022, a ceremony was held to recognize 17 Fine Arts students who will major or minor in the arts. Also honored were 38 recipients of the Fine Arts Diploma seal. The St. Pius X Fine Arts Diploma Seal is a new way to recognize dedicated students as they graduate. To receive a diploma seal, seniors must submit a transcript documenting the completion of a fine arts pathway (three full year-long credits concentrated in one arts discipline), plus at least one additional year of a fine arts credit. Candidates must also participate in artsrelated extracurricular activities and complete a capstone presentation of their experiences. All seal recipients also receive a special cord to be worn at graduation.

Ring the Bells Capital Campaign

Construction Begins as Campaign Contributions and Costs Rise

The Ring the Bells Capital Campaign has reached significant milestones this year, giving reasons to both celebrate and to keep pressing forward in funding the expansion. Thanks to an incredibly generous community, the original $12M fundraising goal was met during the summer of 2022. Price increases in material, labor, and shipping have all escalated significantly since the campaign’s silent fundraising phase began in late 2019. These increased costs have required a doubling-down effort to raise the remaining funds needed to complete the project.

The Flannery O’Connor Library received a full renovation over the summer, and students returned to a beautiful space with private meeting rooms, a computer lab, a dedicated classroom, and more. Functional furniture, including new tables and chairs, soft seating, booth seating, and collaboration stairs, complete the space. Color choices accent Miss O’Connor’s favorite bird, the peacock.

The final two campaign elements include the improvements on Seaver Complex and a new field house for the stadium. The Seaver Complex, built over a decade ago, is lacking in necessary structures to afford teams and fans an up-to-date and comfortable setting. A combination field house/batting facility and a concession stand/press box structure will be built. After guests having endured portable toilets for over a decade, fans and players will now have access to indoor public restrooms.

COVID-19 led to a year-long hiatus in the campaign’s silent phase, which was followed by sky-rocketing costs. Substantial early giving, coupled with a $1M matching challenge grant, gave the campaign the boost it needed to meet the initial funding objectives. The goal now is to finish funding the project, which is already well underway.

Safety and security, a top priority of the Ring the Bells campaign, kicked off with installing field and pathway lights at Seaver Family Sports Complex in January 2022. In May, immediately following the conclusion of the 2021-2022 school year, construction began on enclosing the rear entry to the school between the Roar Store and the Mark Kelly gymnasium. Coupled with a new front lobby, these improvements will secure the heart of campus during the school day. The rear area is fully functioning for the start of the 2022-2023 school year, and the new front entrance will be completed in early fall. All visitors and deliveries will come through the rear entrance until the front lobby is finished.

In 2018 the softball team moved to the Seaver Complex, freeing up the field space directly behind Maloof Stadium. The new field house will occupy this area and connect with the upper portion of the stadium. The wrestling shed will remain in place, and parking spaces are also slated for this area. The new field house will boast two classrooms that double as a meeting space, a strength and conditioning room that is nearly triple the size of the existing facility, and a training room. In addition, the space will include coaches’ offices, team storage, and locker rooms for nine teams as well as physical education students. Construction will begin on both field houses this fall and will take roughly a year to build.

The Ring the Bells campaign is the first effort to expand facilities in nearly two decades, and we are asking school supporters to step forward to finish these much-needed upgrades. The St. Pius X community has been extremely generous, and those contemplating a gift but who haven’t made a move yet are asked to consider making a pledge of support now. Please consider how you can play a role in expanding the campus and strengthening the value of a St. Pius X education.

A New Library for a New Era

The Flannery O’Connor Library renovation occurred during the summer of 2022 and was finished in time for the 2022-2023 school year. Funded through the Ring the Bells Capital Campaign, the renovation includes a dedicated classroom, recessed computer lab, open and closed student meeting spaces, printing station, and new seating areas. Miss O’Connor’s favorite bird, the peacock, inspired the color palette.

Maloof Stadium Field House Design Modified

The original field house design included an open staircase on the right side of the building, with access to the upper parking lot. The stairwell was enclosed to provide greater security, improve student safety, and provide protection from the elements. The new design also added athletic team storage behind the stairwell area.

17BETWEEN THE LIONS

Introducing

Mr. Steve Spellman is so much more than a legend. Mr. Spellman is known as a strong leader, a compassionate friend, a faithful role model, a kind soul, and a forward-thinking visionary. When he came to St. Pius X in 2000, he set out to ensure that our school would always uphold its Catholic values in everything we do. He encouraged our students to achieve greater heights than they previously imagined, in all aspects of their careers at St. Pius X. He showed us all that being caring is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of strength. In short, he demonstrated what it is to be “the Lord’s” throughout his tenure.

To show our appreciation for his 20 plus years of remarkable service to St. Pius X, this spring we proudly announced that the baseball/softball field at Seaver Family Sports Complex had been named in honor of Mr. Spellman. Now, whenever it’s time to watch a few innings, we’ll all head over to Spellman Field and enjoy the sights and sounds of a day (or night!) at the ballpark.

“He showed us all that being caring is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of strength. In short, he demonstrated what it is to be ‘the Lord’s’ throughout his tenure.”

- John Favier, Former St. Pius X President

It is so fitting that Mr. Spellman will forever be connected to this field. In 2008, it was under his direction that St. Pius X acquired the Michelle Court Apartments once situated in that space and expanded the footprint of our campus for the first time in our school’s history. Too many of our athletic teams had to practice or play “home” games elsewhere. He understood that providing

Spellman Field

precious field space was essential to improving student wellbeing and assuring that we could live out the mission of forming the mind, body, and spirit of each student effectively.

I can’t begin to count the number of times parents, alumni, supporters, and friends of St. Pius X have said to me that Mr. Spellman elevated our school to where it is today. There is no denying it, and now we are glad we can properly celebrate his enduring legacy. For many of us, this is the perfect opportunity to show Mr. Spellman our gratitude for his leadership and to help complete his final vision of a Seaver Family Sports Complex that offers our entire community much-needed, expanded facilities for the next generations of Golden Lions. A gift to our Ring the Bells Capital Campaign, specifically honoring Steve Spellman, would be a beautiful tribute to a man we all know and love and who deserves recognition for his endless dedication to St. Pius X. Thank you, Mr. Spellman…you have made our school a better place. We’ll see you at Spellman Field!

The Novack Family Legacy

One day in the mid ’90s, Tom Novack stepped onto the St. Pius X campus for the very first time. Recently retired from BellSouth and an avid sports fan, he was looking for a place to watch a sporting event. His neighbor Nora Richardson, a St. Pius X parent, had suggested he attend a Pius football game. Tom Novack didn’t have a connection to St. Pius X aside from his shared Catholic faith, but he gladly took her suggestion.

universe. I miss him every day.” Mr. Kelly added, “Tom was quite possibly the finest family man I have ever known. St. Pius X was his family, and because of his goodness, he made every single person who visited St. Pius X part of our family also.”

In 1999, Tom established the Novack Family Scholarship, which is awarded to an athlete who excels both on the playing field and in the classroom. Tom hoped that when possible, this scholarship would be given to a child in a single parent household who is in need of tuition assistance. This scholarship has helped 22 St. Pius X students since it was established.

While watching the game on his first visit to campus, St. Pius parent Rene Maynard, who was working in the concession stand, noticed Tom sitting alone, brought him a hot dog, and struck up a conversation. Impressed by the community spirit he had witnessed on campus, Tom asked his neighbor Nora how he could get involved at St. Pius X. She put him in touch with then-Athletic Director Mr. Mark Kelly, and Mr. Kelly eagerly accepted Tom’s help. Tom began assisting with concessions and soon enough, he was in charge of running the operation. His wife Joanne joined him as a volunteer. Years later, the concession stand at Maloof Stadium was named after Tom and Joanne.

Tom and Joanne were a well-known presence on campus. With no children of their own, our students, and even many teachers and coaches, became their children. Tom’s dear friend Mr. Gary “Schmitty” Schmitt, St. Pius’ long-time Athletic Trainer, bonded with Tom over their shared Wisconsin roots. Mr. Schmitt said, “Tom was a father figure to all of our students as well our staff members. He had a heart of gold and a smile the size of the

Tom lost his beloved wife Joanne to Alzheimer’s disease on April 14, 2019. On November 3, 2021, after cheering the Atlanta Braves on to World Series victory, Tom passed away unexpectedly, yet peacefully. After Tom and Joanne’s passing, St. Pius X was bestowed a tremendous gift, one that will keep the Novack legacy alive for generations of students. Tom and Joanne gifted their entire estate to St. Pius X, providing a key gift to the Ring the Bells Capital Campaign.

When the new Field House at St. Pius X is constructed, the training room will be named after Tom’s friend “Schmitty.” We imagine that nothing would make Tom happier than knowing his gift is helping to honor Mr. Schmitt in a space that will benefit all St. Pius X athletes. St. Pius X is honored to be the benefactors of such a generous gift, and we will strive to remain worthy of it though our ideals, our mission, and our efforts.

The Novacks’ story reminds us of the biblical parable of the mustard seed -- an immense legacy that stems from something so small that it seems insignificant in the moment. But in the case of Tom Novack, the mustard seed came in the form of a hot dog…and a friendly Pius parent.

The Annual Fund is a yearly campaign to raise unrestricted donations. These contributions support the day to day operations of the school.

Tuition covers just 92 percent of the cost of educating each student. We must make up the average difference of $1,430 per child. Without the Annual Fund, St. Pius X would have to drastically raise tuition, or undertake additional, severe budget cuts.

Home and School Association Served the Community in New Ways

The St. Pius X Home and School Association is a vehicle for communication and community building between parents, administration, faculty, and staff. Additionally, Home and School sponsors several events to assist the school, enhance students’ experiences, and build community among the students.

This past spring we finally felt like things got back to normal as we went about our work. Our new and favorite “enhancement” was celebrating all of the students, faculty, and staff during lunch with a visit from King of Pops. We coordinated this on the day when seniors wore their painted skirts and pants with their tie-dyed polos to celebrate their college choices. In June, we expressed our gratitude to the Chamblee Police Department with a catered lunch from Porter Brew and Que.

We look forward to continuing to serve the students and community in this way, and we are excited to find news ways to spread joy at St. Pius X.

St. Pius X has always been a special place because of its warm family atmosphere, and we are grateful to be a part of it!

Mothers’ Club Celebrates a Year of Faith, Service, and Community

For more than 30 years, the St. Pius X Mothers’ Club has been meeting in friendship, sharing in faith, and working in service for the good of the community. Mothers’ Club provides a bridge of supplemental financial and volunteer support to the students, families, faculty, and extended community.

The organization’s primary focus is to raise money for student scholarships. This is achieved through Holiday Marketplace, used uniform sales, membership, and restricted gifts. Thank you, St. Pius X community, for your support and generosity this school year. Our events have been so successful thanks to the support we have received.

Mothers’ Club had a busy winter and spring. In December, we kicked off the Advent season with the annual Advent by Candlelight. This year, 160 women attended this special event of friends, food, fellowship, and faith. Atlanta Catholic Radio host Mari Cleveland was the guest speaker.

In February, 35 women gathered for the Mothers’ Club retreat for a morning of renewal of the mind, body, and soul and time for spiritual devotion. Melissa Dolgetta Owens ’99 was the guest speaker. On Valentine’s Day, the Mothers’ Club provided the faculty and staff at St. Pius X with yummy Valentine’s treats.

In April, 80 moms and their senior daughters gathered for Sorority Night. This group is committed to providing all graduates with information for sorority recruitment and a list of mothers willing to write letters of recommendation to their respective sororities. Later in April, the Mothers’ Club once again provided coffee and lunch to the teachers and staff of neighboring Dresden Elementary. Our Dresden Elementary School Supply Drive was a huge success. We collected and delivered approximately $2,000 in supplies!

Thank you to the many volunteers who made each event fun and successful this year!

A “Master” Collaboration of Two St. Pius X Alums

In the words of Chris Thompson ’03, Global Brand Marketing Director at Adidas

Anyone who is even a casual golf fan knows The Masters is the most exciting time of the year for golfers. Not only is it the first men's major of the year, but it is also the unofficial start of golf season in most of the country (and other parts of the world). At Adidas, we're always looking for unique stories to connect to this special time for the sport. We've had success over the last five plus years with limited edition footwear around The Masters, but we decided we really wanted to deliver something unexpected in 2022.

The people I work with in California know a few things about me: I am a proud UGA alum, I take my youth coaching responsibilities very seriously, and I love Waffle House. So, they were not surprised when I pitched a collaboration with my favorite restaurant chain. I explained that Waffle House is an integral part of The Masters experience, so it would be a natural fit that would resonate with golfers no matter

I don’t know if this would have come together without our SPX connection. I’d encourage all alumni to stay close and look out for each other. There are so many talented individuals doing great things in their respective fields.

Counsel. It had been years since I'd spoken with Steve, but our SPX connection got things rolling and we never looked back. We've done collaborations with other brands, but this was one of the best. The Waffle House team was an absolute pleasure to work with from beginning to end. Not only did the shoe sell out in less than 20 minutes, but we both also received an unprecedented amount of earned media coverage and the consumer sentiment was incredibly positive.

The only challenge we faced was not having enough supply to meet the overwhelming demand -- a good problem to have. I can't disclose anything about future plans for The Masters, but I can confidently say we've set the bar very high with this collaboration. It's going to be tough to match it.

where they're from. They were a little skeptical, but supportive of me at least reaching out to an old friend at Waffle House to gauge their interest.

My brother, Matt Thompson ’05, put me in touch with his friend, Steve Huttman ’05, who works at Waffle House in Corporate ‘‘

I'm grateful to Steve and the people at Waffle House for being such good partners. I don't know if this would have come together without our SPX connection. I'd encourage all alumni to stay close and look out for each other. There are so many talented individuals doing great things in their respective fields. We're scattered all around the world but we share this incredible connection because of the time we've spent at 2674 Johnson Road.

Blaise Wannemacher ’06

Our Very Own “Ted Lasso”

Blaise Wannemacher ’06, the Director of Operations at St. Pius X, is a proud Golden Lion to his core. He began coaching at St. Pius X while earning a Business Administration degree from Georgia Gwinnett College. Through marriage he is related to the Buechner family, one of the largest families in St. Pius X history. He and his wife Lisette Buechner Wannemacher, a fellow ’06 classmate, have three kids: Pace, 8, Palmer, 6, and Annie, 3. After becoming the head soccer coach, Blaise became known as St. Pius’ Ted Lasso, a reference to the popular Apple TV+ comedy series in which an American football coach becomes the coach for a British soccer team.

How many Pius-related relatives do you have?

Just one blood relative, my sister Rachel Wannemacher McCright ’02. Non-blood relatives…wayyyy too many to count!

When did you start working at Pius? I became the Director of Operations in March 2021, but I have been coaching in various sports for 14 years. I began coaching football in 2008. I coached basketball for three years and baseball for six years before I became the soccer coach this past season.

How did you come to be the soccer coach? Well, I love St. Pius X. I also have a serious problem saying no to things here at St. Pius because of my love for the school. I will do anything and everything needed to help our students, athletes, performers, faculty, staff, you name it, to be the best we can be. When the soccer head coaching position opened last summer, it put the school in a tough bind. Even though I had limited knowledge about soccer before the season, I know how to coach and motivate athletes. At the end of the season, I think that is what

well, but I have to say this was the most unbelievable group I have ever had the privilege to coach. They were so resilient and determined to be great. Even though we came up one game short from being champions, they are 100% champions in my book.

Did you know about Ted Lasso when you started coaching? Funny enough, no! When I had my first player meeting, I only knew a handful of the players. I knew some from coaching other sports, and some from the school, but many of the kids didn’t

Far right: Blaise dressed as the character Ted Lasso for Halloween. Right: A wooden cross, made for Blaise by Ian Shaw ’23. Top: The famous “Believe” sign from the show Ted Lasso, signed by all of Blaise’s soccer players.

know anything about me. When I explained that I have zero soccer experience but a lot of football experience, one of the players said, “Wait, so we have our very own Ted Lasso?” A lot of the boys laughed, and although I didn’t understand, I laughed it off as well. When I got home, I looked up Ted Lasso and immediately started laughing. Of course I instantly became hooked on the show and the idea that I was St. Pius’ very own Ted Lasso.

Do you have any future plans for coaching soccer? Coaching is going to look very different for me in the future with my busy full-time role. I love St. Pius, but at this time, I know it’s best to focus my love for this school on everything operational, and be sure that the school is fully functioning and ready to welcome back all 1,100+ students, faculty, staff, visitors, and everyone else come August. As for soccer, a lot of work is being done behind the scenes to ensure that the boys’ soccer program, which has very high standards, continues on that path in the future.

Reverend Avery Daniel ’11 Ordained to the Priesthood

On May 28, 2022, at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta, Deacon Avery Daniel ’11 was ordained to the Priesthood of Jesus Christ. Prior to his Ordination, then Deacon Avery was the Chaplain at Blessed Trinity Catholic High School. Fr. Avery’s first assignment as a priest began July 1 as the Parochial Vicar at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Athens, Georgia and St. Catherine Labouré Catholic Church in Jefferson, Georgia. Fr. Avery will also offer spiritual support to St. Joseph Catholic School and Monsignor Donovan Catholic High School in Athens.

Fr. Avery gives abundant thanks to God for the central role that the St. Pius X family played in the development of his vocation. He is proud to be the latest priest-son of St. Pius and our beloved Monsignor López. Please pray for Fr. Avery each day!

Monsignor Lopez was given the honor, by Fr. Avery, of vesting him at the Ordination Mass.

Richard Taylor and Kyle Cleland

Golden Lion Football Teammates Atlanta’s Affordable Housing Shortage

Class of 2008 classmates, football teammates, and friends Richard Taylor and Kyle Cleland have joined forces to deal with the shortage of affordable housing in Atlanta.

After working in Chicago in private equity and investment banking, Richard Taylor decided to leave his job in what he calls “something of a mid-20s life crisis.” In an effort to gain a deeper understanding of poverty, he backpacked through Third World countries, staying in youth hostels and spending time getting to know people who had escaped genocide. After losing his mother to cancer in 2019, he returned to Atlanta and founded ARRC Capital Partners with a plan to buy and renovate apartments. Upon learning of his friend’s interest in real estate, Kyle Cleland, a Realtor with EXP Realty, showed Richard an apartment building that had been vacant for 20 years. With the support of a few investment firms, the friends took on their first real estate project by converting the 20-unit building into 40 fully furnished microunits. The property, now called 12Hundred Studios, is located in Hunter Hills, a neighborhood close to the Atlanta Beltline.

12Hundred Studios won a 2022 CoStar Impact Award for “Best New Multifamily Development.” The CoStar Impact Awards celebrate exemplary commercial real estate practitioners that have brought leadership, innovation, and professionalism to their markets. Last year in a press release, former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms referenced 12Hundred Studios, saying, “This development represents our administration’s efforts to achieve true community revitalization and to meet our affordable housing goal.”

Using the lessons they’ve learned through the process of renovating 12Hundred Studios, the two plan to undertake more projects in the future. Richard said, “We want to take this project and do the exact same thing to the next one,” helping sellers understand they are “in it to build the community.”
