St. Pius X Catholic High School, currently celebrating 60 years of excellence, experienced another year of unmatched blessings, with unparalleled success in every area of operation. From the heart of our school with our campus ministry and theology programs, to our exceptional academics, brilliance in the arts, and championship winning athletic programs, we have been able to establish new benchmarks of excellence, all in support of our mission.

Our success is a direct reflection of the support we receive from our incredible community. We are so grateful for those who contribute to the school through financial generosity and volunteerism. This support, along with the dedication of our professional teachers, the staff that aids their every effort, and the hard work and perseverance of our students as they aspire to obtain the best possible Catholic, college preparatory education, makes such levels of accomplishment possible.

The lives of our students and faculty are impacted daily and directly from the gifts we receive. Our Annual Fund saw a record-breaking year, raising over a million dollars and allowing us to provide resources for our students and teachers. We saw gifts for scholarships continue to grow in honor of those who made an impact on our lives and will now allow students to receive an education at St. Pius X. The GRACE Scholars program and our own Chi-Rho Society both saw new donations and members.

Gifts from our school community, alumni, parents, students, parents of alumni, grandparents, and supporters undergird our every effort. These contributions help us sustain a culture and environment that increasingly impacts our continued success and accomplishments.

DID YOU KNOW RoboLions, the robotics team, is in its fourth year of existence and is a fully STEM extracurricular activity. Team members tackle the challenge of problem solving, designing, building, programming, marketing, and project management, all while incorporating team work.

Beginning with eight team members and two robots, the team this year will feature five robots and 20 team members.

DID YOU KNOW St. Pius X was designed by architect Nicholas J. Pascullis and was one of his last projects before he died. When Pascullis discovered that the new school did not have the funds to keep the Bell Tower in the plans, he donated the money in order to keep the icon on campus.

2017-2018 The RoboLions (the St. Pius X Robotics Team) welcomed a number of new members as the program grew in popularity. Led by Brigid Bartholomai ’83 and Connie Fish, the group met daily to fine tune structures, de-bug codes, and complete engineering notebooks for competition.

Led by coaches Marsha and Fleming Free, and Laura Briscoe, the Academic Quiz Bowl Team participated in WSB-TV’s High Q in September. The group won over Oconee High School with a final score of 730-405.

In light of the destruction from hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Jose, and Maria, the school community joined hands with local restaurants and collected items such as batteries, baby wipes, formula, diapers, travel-sized toiletries and cleaning products to ship to Puerto Rico.

The St. Piux X Volleyball Team was honored for its academic excellence by the American Volleyball Coaches Association for the fifth year in a row (eighth overall). The award honors collegiate and high school teams that display excellence in the classroom by maintaining a 3.3 cumulative GPA.

In September, the Marching Golden Lions performed at Walt Disney World, marching

The SPX Dance Company performed at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens as part of an exclusive event for donors and sponsors in November. Later in the year, the Spring Dance Concert rehearsal was transformed into a performance for over 370 students from Dresden Elementary School.

In late October, the National Honor Society inducted 65 new members to the organization.

The organization is based on four pillars, scholarship, leadership, character, and service and organizes a Thanksgiving Food Drive, a Candy Gram sale, and maintains the Little Free Library on Johnson Road.

The legacy of St. Pius X runs deep through our families. The year boasted 111 alumni parents (with 89 students). Thirty-seven of these legacy students were members of the Class of 2018.

Monserrath Juarez ’19 and Anna Reigner ’19 won top recognition in the 2018 National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in Writing program. Their submissions were evaluated by one high school teacher and one college English teacher. St. Pius X has had the honor of claiming 45 recipients since 1969.

In October, the puck dropped on the Golden Lions first-ever hockey season. Theology teacher Dennis Ruggiero led the charge to find a coach and rally students. Due to the fact that hockey is not yet a GHSA sanctioned sport, students from schools outside of St. Pius X were welcomed to the team.

The Home and School Association hosted their tenth annual Career Forum in November.

Fifty-two talented professionals from a wide range of careers offered their time and expertise to meet with upperclass students and give students the opportunity to explore and gather information on various areas of interest.

Members of the Art Association painted portraits of displaced children in Syrian refugee camps for the Memory Project Program. The project uses art to make a

Twenty-eight priests spent a day at St. Pius X for the Lenten and Advent Penance Services, where an estimated 700 students took the opportunity to celebrate reconciliation.

For nearly a decade, each December, the St. Pius X community joins together to support the Dresden Christmas Project and make the holidays a little brighter for that community.

Led by parent volunteers, the project served 33 families with a total of 93 children. More than 800 gifts were shared this year and over 90 students volunteered their time for the program.

St. Pius X Catholic High School participated in its first one-day giving campaign with the Catholic Foundation of North Georgia. Donors to #iGiveCatholic, held on #GivingTuesday, shattered the $10,000 goal and raised over $43,500 for the school.

After 42 years of service, spirit, and love for St. Pius X, Mark Kelly retired from his position as Director of Athletics. Under his leadership, the school was honored five times with both the GADA Director’s Cup and the GHSA Sportsmanship Award. In addition, St. Pius X was twice recognized as having the top Catholic high school athletic program in the nation.

The St. Pius X Christmas Classic hosted 16 teams from eight different states. The Golden Lions defeated Canisius of Buffalo, NY to win the boys’ title, while John Carroll of Baltimore, MD knocked off the St. Pius X ladies to capture the girls’ championship.

Thirty students attended the March for Life in January in Washington, D.C., where they had the opportunity to attend Mass, the annual march, and a youth rally at the National Mall.

The annual St. Pius X Trivia Night raised $13,000 with over 520 alumni, parents and friends in attendance. For the tenth year, Michael Trujillo `01 entertained guests as the M.C. extraordinaire.

Over 60 students of all grades took part in the fourth annual Domini Sumus retreat at LifeTeen’s Camp Covecrest in February.

Students enjoyed a weekend in the mountains of prayer, hiking, the sacraments, Adoration and spending time with classmates. Eighteen students leaders helped facilitate the small groups, games, and ropes course.

Members of Pius Players performed the Best of Broadway, a musical revue featuring selections from past shows in honor of the school’s 60th anniversary. The group performed numbers from The Sound of Music, West Side Story, The Wiz, Newsies, and Les Miserables and dedicated the show to Msgr. Terry W. Young, whose support laid the foundation for the program.

Under the direction of second-year instructor Millie Turek, the chorus program added a men’s vocal ensemble, fall and spring concerts, and ventured to grade schools for performances. The combined ensemble performed at the Georgia Music Educators Association Large Group Performance Evaluation where they received the highest rating of “Superior” from professional judges.

The webcast team, ESPX, earned three awards from the National Federation of High Schools

Network including Best Marketing Program, Elite School, and top-three finalist for best highlight reel. The group broadcasts over 100 athletic events in 180 days to Golden Lion fans across the globe.

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program honors Georgia’s outstanding high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development. This year, St. Pius X was proud to announce senior Nicholas Poulos as the STAR student and World Languages Department Chair Maria Kepler as the 2017-18 STAR teacher.

One of the highest honors that a sophomore or junior can receive is to be selected to participate in the Governor’s Honors Program, sponsored by the State Department of Education. St. Pius X was proud to announce five finalists for the 2018 program: Sophia Alarcon (dance), Jared Druss (world languages), John Hull (world languages), Kemper Higgins (communicative arts), and Anna Reigner (communicative arts). These students were offered the opportunity to attend the annual summer program with the finest students in academics and the arts in the state.

The World Languages Department prepared students for the National Language Exams and students performed exceptionally well.

Thirty-three French students ranked nationally in the contest, 67 students earned recognition in the National Latin Exam, and 70 students earned medals in the National Spanish Exam.

In addition, Ansley Boykin ’19 was selected for the 2018 Junior Study Abroad Program for her achievement on the National Spanish Exam.

Forty-one students and ten chaperones offered up their spring break to serve at the Mustard Seed Communities in Nicaragua and Jamaica.

Students spent the week serving residents through games, prayer, music, and fun, in addition to landscaping and building projects. The mission trip program was started in the nineties when Campus Ministry would take students on domestic trips to help those in need.

In February, students and faculty had the opportunity to participate in the Google Expeditions Augmented Reality Pioneer Program.

The National Merit Scholarship Program provides opportunities for scholarships to outstanding students throughout the country who succeed in their studies and perform with excellence on the PSAT examination. St. Pius X was proud to announce four National Merit Scholars, one National Merit Hispanic Scholar, and 18 National Merit Commended Students. Seniors Ethan Hennessey, Lauren Hutson, Nicholas Poulos, and Zachary Washburn reached finalist standing, placing them in the top half of one percent of students nationwide participating in the competition.

St. Pius X was the proud recipient of the Georgia High School Association’s Cooperative Spirit Award. Voted on by principals and athletic directors from the region, this award recognizes schools with the highest degree of sportsmanship in the stands, on the fields, and on the courts. This is the fourth consecutive time St. Pius X has earned this prestigious award, and sixth in the last seven years.

Over 400 volunteers were invited to the 60th anniversary Volunteer Appreciation Mass and Reception. These men and women handle a variety of tasks from serving at the concession stands and working the gala to working in the Business Office and assisting with Class Pilgrimages.

St. Pius X hosted its 29th blood drive since 1984, making it one of the most successful school blood drives in the nation. Seniors Will Galvin and Lucky Provenzano earned scholarships through the American Red Cross for their dedication over the past four years.

St. Pius X welcomed new director of athletics, Todd Mooney, in May. Bringing over 25 years of collegiate and high school experience, Mooney is the fourth athletics director in the history of the school.

Tanner Duffin ’19 was named the Bruce Yohe Outstanding Male Field Athlete of the Year at the All Metro Track and Field Banquet. He won the 4A State discus title and broke 200’ to record the #3 throw in the nation. In addition, Coach Ryan McClay was honored with the Judo Brown Award for Outstanding Dedication: Boys Coach. McClay has led the team for nine years and has earned six state championships in cross country and two in track and field.

The Second Annual George B. Maloof Lion Nation Classic Golf and Tennis Mixer raised over $35,000 for the St. Pius X Alumni Association Scholarship Fund and the St. Pius X football program. The community came together for two days of play to celebrate the 60th Anniversary with a healthy spirit of competition and pride for our school.

An estimated 350 donors to the St. Pius X Annual Fund enjoyed a night of music and socializing for the school’s inaugural Annual

FUN(d) Party. The record-breaking Annual Fund raised over a million dollars for the school and included donations from a wide variety of members of the community...the Class of 2018 even dug deep into their pockets to help make a difference in the campaign through Going Out Golden.

Eighteen members of the Class of 2018 intend to continue their athletic careers in college. Seven will remain in the state of Georgia while the remaining 11 will matriculate to schools across the country. This marks the eighth straight year at least ten student-athletes will further their careers.

Nominated by his department, Mr. Jon Carreker was voted Teacher of the Year by the faculty for his years of service and dedication to teaching.

Carreker has been a member of the mathematics department for 18 years.

Mrs. Alison Bruckert Wright ’01 was selected for the Excellence in Teaching Award for her ability to reach students of all levels, support of the school’s mission, and her commitment to professional development. Wright has been a member of the social studies department for the past 10 years.

The Golden Lions put together another exciting athletic season winning two state championships, (boys’ swim and dive and boys’ track and field) four state runners-up, (boys’ basketball, girls’ soccer, boys’ golf and girls’ cross country) and had 20 of 22 teams qualify for the state playoffs. The school celebrated an additional six region championships with boys’ cross country, girls’ cross country, volleyball, boys’ basketball, girls’ soccer and football.

St. Pius X students took a total of 1,034 Advanced Placement (AP) exams with 186 students earning the distinction of AP Scholar.

Ten of these students were named National AP Scholars, having received an average score of at least four on all AP exams taken, and scores of four or higher on eight or more of these exams.

Two-hundred and fifty-seven members from the Class of 2018 graduated on May 19 at Greater Atlanta Christian, becoming the 60th graduating class of St. Pius X. President Chad Barwick, Principal Steve Spellman, valedictorian Nicholas Poulos, and salutatorian Matthew Halbig addressed the group, reminiscing on their successful years. The Class of 1968 was honored with the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award. Members from the class joined faculty on stage and gave a special anniversary pin to each graduate. Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory distributed diplomas and proudly presented his annual Archbishop’s Award to Grace Berg and John Riley Heneghan.

class of 2018 acceptances The Class of 2018 graduated with the highest SAT and ACT scores in the history of St. Pius X Catholic High School. The graduates completed a record 1,502 applications and were accepted at 189 colleges and universities.

They have matriculated to 76 schools across the United States. The group earned an astounding $19 million in scholarship money (a number that does not include HOPE or athletic scholarships).

DID YOU KNOW The first Annual Fund was held in the 1988-1989 academic year and raised over $66,600 under the direction of Director of Development and Alumni Lou Loncaric, and the leadership of Monsignor Terry Young as principal. Gene Brisbane and Gloria Jameson led the faculty and staff campaign. Both still give to St. Pius X today. Solicitations for the Annual Fund included a student/alumni phonathon at the Southern Bell Phone Center. The first Annual Fund campaign raised more than the school auction, Athletic Association, computer fund, raffle, Home and School Association, and other fundraisers.

DID YOU KNOW St. Pius X was staffed by four different religious orders of women (Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart, Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, and the Religious Sisters of Mercy) at its inception, but over the years, other orders such as Ursulines, Benedictines, Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa and the Sisters of Charity of Mt. DID YOU KNOW From 1977-1983 the Chapel was used as the school library, complete with bookshelves lining the wall of windows. Once a week, a visiting priest would come to offer Mass in religion classes.

Community Masses were said in the stadium or in the space where the St. Pius X statue currently stands. Restoration of the Chapel, under the direction of Msgr. Terry Young, began in 1983 and included the stained glass windows and icon paintings currently featured today.

Founded in 2008, GRACE Scholars is a student scholarship organization devoted to students who wish to attend Georgia Catholic schools. Georgia taxpayers can redirect part of their tax liability to GRACE, which in turn awards scholarships to deserving students. Taxpayers receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for their qualified contributions. Taxpayers can designate a specific Catholic school to receive their contributions, and in 2018 Georgia taxpayers designated $209,736 to St. Pius X Catholic High School.

On March 3, 2018 members of the St. Pius X community gathered for Lions and Legacies, the 60th Anniversary Auction and Gala.

Parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends enjoyed “bringing it home” and celebrating the evening on campus in the two completely transformed gyms.

Four hundred and fifty attendees were treated to music by current faculty members Trey Broussard ’01 and Chad Paetznick as they browsed the nearly 300 silent auction items up for grabs. Over 1,700 bids were placed throughout the evening, including online bids from those who could not attend. A variety of items were offered in over 15 categories from “Around Town” experiences to vacation and travel. Guests enjoyed Lion Lagers and Lionritas in commemorative anniversary glasses under banners reminiscent of 60 years of St. Pius X. In addition, coasters, t-shirts, and Chi-Rho charms were sold featuring the anniversary logo.

As guests moved into the main gym for dinner and dancing, Mark Kelly ’70 served as auctioneer extraordinaire, his love for the school and its community shining through.

Six live auction items were presented, Maloof Stadium reserved seating for the 2018 season, a yellow diamond (to reflect the golden anniversary and the Golden Lions), a tailgate for 20 for the St. Pius X versus Blessed Trinity game, Dinner with the Dooley’s, reserved

space at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, and a golf game with Archbishop Gregory. Dinner, prepared

by Legacy Catering and Events, included a number of food stations with something for everyone, while The Stephen Lee Band played hits spanning the decades.

During the gala, guests had the opportunity to participate in Get on Board with Fast Funds.

In less than five minutes, those in attendance raised more than $52,000 to purchase a new bus, which will be used for athletics, clubs and organizations, and field trips. Greg and Hope Long were announced as the tuition raffle winners shortly before a balloon drop and a video featuring 60 years of St. Pius X. In addition to the funds raised for the bus, the gala raised over $100,000 for the benefit of the St. Pius X Endowment Fund.

Special thanks goes to over 100 dedicated volunteers and Associate Director of Advancement Mary Vallés Jones, who worked tirelessly for two years to make this event a success. st. pius x endowment Thanks to the generosity of numerous families and individuals through the years, St. Pius X Catholic High School is the beneficiary of $8,225,687 in endowments and awards.

These funds include $6,398,999 held by the Archdiocese of Atlanta as well as the Catholic Foundation of North Georgia for the beneficial interest of the school. In addition, donors established endowment funds totaling $1,826,688 at the Catholic Foundation of North Georgia which are not included in any of the school’s financial statements. In total there are nearly 70 individual endowed funds and funded awards that support tuition assistance, student and faculty enrichment, and the general operating needs of the school. Endowments allow a gift to remain intact while only the interest from the principal is used for the stated purpose of the fund.

Named funds that reach $25,000 are considered endowed, generally providing at least $1,000 in funding each year.

DID YOU KNOW Willard Arbour ’73 founded the musical broadcast program in 1973. The program offered musical broadcasts which played in the cafeteria and claimed a collection of 850 45 RPM records. Lt. Alexander Brooks Montgomery, Jr. lost his life in the service of his country on February 20, 1981, leaving behind his two siblings Lisa ’73 and Robert ’77. memorial scholarship The Memorial Scholarship, held at The Catholic Foundation of North Georgia, is a pool of funds endowed by gifts from various donors to memorialize deceased individuals. When a loved one passes away, families may ask that donations be made to the St. Pius X Memorial Fund in memory of the deceased. If donations to an individual do not reach $25,000 (in which case an individual endowed scholarship would be created) then the monies are pooled with other gifts in the Memorial Scholarship fund. This endowed pool is held in perpetuity while the interest from the principal provides student scholarships.

DID YOU KNOW The first art teacher at St. Pius X was Mary Hutchinson, one of the small number of lay teachers hired in the early years of school history. Since that time, there have only been three other visual arts teachers hired. Corinna Brannon has been teaching since 2000 and enhanced the program with the annual Juried Visual Arts Exhibition.

BICKES FAMILY TEACHER DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT FUND This fund was established by alumni Tom and May May Bindewald Bickes ’74 & ’75 in 2015. It provides professional development funding for St. Pius X faculty.

MARY BYRNE CALLAHAN^ Established in 1999 by the Callahan family in honor of this St. Pius X mother so devoted to the school, this fund provides continuing education support for St. Pius X faculty. A portion of this fund also provides student scholarships.

ARCHBISHOP DONNELLAN Established by the family of this Atlanta archbishop who encouraged the growth of the St. Pius X fine arts program, this scholarship is given to students of the performing arts for advanced study during the summer.

FLANAGAN^ This fund was established in 2016

by Martin and Jennifer Flanagan, parents of two St. Pius X alumni, to provide enrichment opportunities for faculty, staff, and students. The fund is designed to encourage teachers to take their classes on pilgrimages, field trips, or out of classroom experiences that engage students in local arts, events, and learning experiences.

THE GOIZUETA FOUNDATION FACULTY AND STAFF DEVELOPMENT FUND Created in 2004, this fund provides professional development and continuing education funds for faculty and staff.

LORIDANS ACADEMIC FELLOWSHIP^ This fellowship was established to supplement the income of a superior classroom teacher in order to recognize the importance of classroom teaching.

THOMAS J. MALL NOTRE DAME AWARD This award was established in 2010

by Tom and Mary Anne Mall, grandparents of Jessica Mall ’13.

Tom Mall, a Notre Dame graduate, is keenly interested in assisting St. Pius X graduates attend his alma mater.

Funds are awarded to a graduating senior who has been accepted and plans to attend the University of Notre Dame.
