“Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day.”

SERENA SIMMONS CONNELLY (1970 – 2020) Our prayers go out to the Simmons and Connelly families regarding the passing of a dear friend of St. Philip’s and many other worthy causes in North Texas. Known for her quiet, generous, and compassionate support of organizations committed to human rights, early childhood education, and anti-poverty, Serena passed away this spring after a fierce battle with cancer. St. Philip’s will forever be grateful for Serena’s generous support of our educational and technology initiatives. Most recently, she and her sister, Lisa Simmons, through the Simmons Sisters Fund at The Texas Women’s Foundation, provided funding to support St. Philip’s operations during the current crisis, our Dyslexia program, and future Performing and Visual Arts Pavilion. Heaven has gained a lovely angel!

ROGER HORCHOW (1928 – 2020)

C L A R I N G 75 YEARS OF WONDROUS WORKS

St. Philip’s sends its sincerest condolences to the Horchow family – Regen, Lizzie, and Sally – in the passing of their dynamic father who left an indelible mark in the arts, educational, health, and public radio communities, both locally, and nationally. Horchow’s support of St. Philip’s educational initiatives began over 25 years ago. We are tremendously grateful for his and the Horchow family’s confidence and generosity over the years. One of Roger’s greatest legacies for St. Philip’s will be his work in helping to endow the School’s principal position – now the George T. Lee Jr. Principal - in honor of his good friend, George Lee. May his many good works live on in the hearts of many!

PAULA MOSLE (1930 – 2020)

Our prayers are with former trustee Jon Mosle, III, his wife, Jennifer, and family in the passing of his dear mother, Paula, this past summer. Paula was a lovely light and ambassador for the St. Philip’s ministry for over three decades. Like her son and late husband of 57 years, she, too, served as a trustee. An Oklahoma native, Paula was a member and past vestry of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. Over her lifetime, she served as a compassionate volunteer and in leadership roles for many local organizations, particularly educational institutions like St. Philip’s. A former teacher with a passion for Shakespeare, Paula could recite from memory his soliloquies until life’s end.

ELIZABETH “BETTE” RATHJEN (1999 – 2020)

St. Philip’s sends its sincerest condolences to the Rathjen and Perot families in the passing of their beloved Elizabeth Margot "Bette" Rathjen, a loving daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, and cousin. She was richly blessed and left this world knowing she was deeply loved. Elizabeth was known for her smarts, sassy, creativity, and humor. She began high school in the dance program at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts where she was sidelined by injury. She eventually transitioned to Chatham Hall in Virginia from which she graduated in 2018. After being away from Dallas for high school, Bette was thrilled to return to attend Southern Methodist University. At the time of her death, she was just completing her sophomore year. Hundreds of South Dallas households will be enriched by Elizabeth’s legacy through numerous gifts made to Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry, in her memory, over the last several months. St. Philip’s would also like to extend its deepest sympathies and condolences to Ramona Bailey, Dean of Students and Family Affairs, in the passing of her mother, Atharie Menefee Nelson; to Board Trustee, Tim Weil, in the passing of his father, Christopher Maurice Weil; to Board Trustee, Brent Alfred, in the passing of his mother; and to Breanna Turnley, Individual WINTER MAGAZINE 2020 and Alumni Giving Manager, in the passing of herwww.stphilips1600.org beloved grandfather.
