A Word From the Perot Family Headmaster
The Way Forward Requires A Look Back
The year 2020 is referred to as the year of vision. Beyond the challenges of the world confronting us today, it is important that we examine true vision because it does not ignore the past. As we move towards the 75th anniversary commemoration of a small group of Black Episcopalians establishing the ministry of St. Philip’s, the West African word “Sankofa” comes to mind. Originating from the Akan tribe of Ghana, Sankofa wisely denotes “Learning from the past ensures a strong future."
Now is the time to be like the
Sankofa bird which flies forward while looking backward; sincerely reviewing its past to understand where it must go.
The word “Sankofa” symbolizes a quest for knowledge that is based on self-examination, patience, and intelligence. Although St. Philip’s continues to learn from its past to inform its future, it is clear that we are seeing the disappointing need for our nation to attempt – once again – to learn from its past in order to achieve its full potential for the future. Unfortunately, hatred, strife, disharmony, and greed
continue to disunite the state of America. Now is the time to be like the Sankofa bird which flies forward while looking backward; sincerely reviewing its past to understand where it must go.
Wisdom tells us there are lessons available to learn from past mistakes, misunderstandings, and miseducation. The best means of accessing these lessons is turning to each other, instead of on each other. As our students will tell you, “A day without learning is a day wasted.” Through sustained authentic engagement, we can learn from each other. St. Philip’s was reminded of this through its recent Coffee & Conversation Series. Love matters as 1 John 4:8 states, “God is Love.”
“Love” was a lesson learned when White Episcopalians joined forces to support the athletic program that
Black Episcopalians started through St. Philip’s church and later, the daycare that was established when a toddler was hit by a car. Although our history books are guilty of omission, there are many manifestations of diverse people and communities demonstrating “the oneness of humankind.” These lessons are not abundant in movies, newspapers, media, nor tweets. These lessons are with us, only to be unleashed through intentional engagement in courageous conversations and interactions. Remember, GOD equals LOVE and LOVE requires TIME.
As you browse through this edition of our magazine, St. Philip’s invites you to join us in being joyful about
what lies ahead. Our 20/20 vision embraces the past with its struggles and the goodness of God through it all. Like the Sankofa, we know the same God who brought us through yesterday is here today and awaits us in the distant future. Focus on His wondrous works that far exceed the wretched woes that often discourage us.
Blessings,
Dr. Terry J. Flowers

THE ABCs OF SOCIAL JUSTICE
An educator at heart, below are Dr. Flowers’ ABCs of Social Justice; steps we all can take to ensure love and humanity reign in our community and world…especially in these unprecedented times.
Ask WHY we are really challenged over and over, until you find answers (at least ten times)
Bolt yourself beyond what you’ve been told
Come and see diverse communities and their residents and programs that are impactful
Discomfort yourself to pursue change; this work isn’t comfortable
Excuse yourself from individuals and entities that adversely impact social mobility
Face the person in the mirror daily asking, “Am I being deliberate in making a change?”
Give to organizations that promote justice, love, mercy, and operate with equity
Host six dinners in your home with diverse invitees
Include diverse families in your inner circles
Join an organization group or club that authentically exposes you to different cultures
Keep thy tongue from evil
L ean not to your own understanding; seek organic answers
Move to a community that looks the way God intended for us to live
Nudge others who seem to be in the dark or worse – in the shadows - of righteousness
Operate under the reality that growth and prosperity CAN benefit ALL
Patronize businesses that practice diversity in hiring
Quiet the noises of hatred within your life
Reserve your opinion until justified by fact and remove judgment
Speak up to injustice and social engineering of inequity
Train up your children to do justice, love mercy, and seek peace
Understand history, re-examine what you were taught
VOTE
Worship wisely - where God’s love for all people resonates
X-ray your soul, adjust it and assume the xenia effect on others
Yoke yourself to youth initiatives that elevate all humanity
Zoom in on the number one factor you perceive to be the root of racial strife and attack it
A Word From The George T. Lee, Jr. Principal
Our School is LIT –Loving, Innovative, and Together
A determining factor in the success of a school is how it responds to adversity. In most instances, adversity is both inevitable and revealing of either strength or fragility. While our nation faced many challenges that impacted our school, St. Philip’s has exhibited a diamond's characteristics, shining under pressure. As we embarked on this new school year, our students and faculty dealt with the pandemic's impact, in addition to the need for racial reconciliation in this country. As a school, we are rising above these challenges by embracing the power of prayer, love, and togetherness.
In light of all of the challenges our students and community face, St. Philip’s faculty is poised and ready to shine.
students and community face, St. Philip’s faculty is poised and ready to shine.
In these unprecedented times, innovation and creativity are essential. We recognize that implementing true innovation doesn't happen without courage. As a school, we are blessed to improve our teaching and learning by adding the following critical resources thanks to the generous support of area foundations and major donors:
• 18 Swivl cameras to enhance our hybrid learning model
The 2020-2021 school year theme is LIT: Loving, Innovative, Together. When something is lit, it is illuminated. In light of all of the challenges our
• 65 New employee laptops
• 240 new student devices
• 6 desktop computers for common areas
• 3 Microsoft studio computers for art, technology, and the receptionist’s desk
• 6 new online learning licenses
We recognize that technology is not enough to support our students; therefore, we have also hired additional academic support staff to provide individualized and small group instruction. We are ever committed to providing our students an exceptional educational experience that affords them with the opportunities to be intellectually driven, Christ-centered, exhibit inter and intrapersonal wellness, become servant leaders, and culturally aware with a mindset of social justice.
Although, we are learning using different tools, the mission of St. Philip's School and Community Center remains the same -- to offer students and families an unparalleled experience.
Sincere Regards,
Kellee Murrell
AT A GLANCE: CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Our school currently serves 200 students in grades PreK2-6th (ages 2-12) who benefit from St. Philip’s rigorous, nurturing, and dynamic Christian-based education.
Processing the Pivot
A change has come to St. Philip’s and every school across the country and the world. We have all had to pivot in the provision of an education during these unprecedented times – faculty, staff, students, and parents. This has been a lesson in patience, planning, and daily processing of the new way of teaching and learning. Below, are a few testimonials from faculty and parents sharing their thoughts about how they and St. Philip’s have faced extraordinary change.
"I miss having my classroom filled with the energy of the students. I miss seeing everybody in Chapel. I miss Friday's Saint of the Week and I miss Saints´ Time. I do not like the coldness of remote education and, although I am amazed at the things that computers can do, I know they will never replace face-toface interaction.
Amidst all this, I am grateful to see how St. Philip’s is handling all the curve balls thrown at us by the pandemic and for the efforts to create a safe place for all who are part of this community. I am also amazed at the way leadership has stepped up to the challenge and at the speed of the whole process. I am thankful for the opportunity to continue doing what is in my power to make this the best situation possible for students, parents, teachers, staff, and community members.
I believe that it is only through these examples of resilience and compassion that we will emerge victorious from this crisis. St. Philip’s continues to lead the way through the practice of its values.” Jorge Perez, 1st – 6th Grade Spanish Instructor
“With all of the uncertainty of COVID-19, we are eternally grateful that we chose St. Philip's. We hear horror stories of packet learning, parental teaching, and disengagement. In contrast, the St. Philip's administration, faculty, and staff saw a challenge and rose to meet it. Virtual learning offered us the opportunity to hear the type of instruction our student received regularly and is influencing our expectations for instruction after we leave. Additionally, the communication throughout the pandemic has been transparent and timely. We truly feel that the school is taking all of the necessary precautions to ensure student safety. Thank you, St. Philip's for all that you do!” - The Flanders Family
“The St. Philips Fine Arts Department is adjusting, adapting, and innovating our way through this 2020 school year. The staff and students both long to return to a space of high-level engagement with one another, however virtual-learning has afforded us the opportunity to connect through laughter, movement, voice, and... technology. We do have a few surprises up our sleeve that will debut in the Spring, so be on the look out!” - Alicia “IV” Holmes, Fine and Performing Arts Director
“We are new this year to the St. Philip's family, and we feel truly blessed that God's path for us led us to St. Philip's in this unprecedented time. Josephine is a very social child and needs inperson instruction, so we opted for in-person in Mrs. Morrison's PK3 class. The first few weeks of virtual learning were challenging for all of us, but it gave us the unique opportunity to view Josephine's classroom activity firsthand. We were simply blown away by every aspect of the content and planning that went into the virtual experience.
Since transitioning to in-person learning, Josephine has really started to thrive at her new school. We will continue to take this year day-by-day and understand that continued prayer, patience, vigilance, and resilience will be necessary to get through it. We are so thankful to be here with the St. Philip's community where safety is prioritized, science matters, and our children collectively continue to thrive spiritually, educationally, and socially through all of this.” - The Spaniol Family
Young Minds Venture Into Design!
The 6th grade students are partnering with Good Shepherd Episcopal School in a learning/design challenge. Students began with a " getting to know you" session where they made individual FlipGrid videos describing their likes and dislikes. In this session, students were able to see that though their backgrounds are diverse, they have some of the same likes and dislikes. Their first mini-challenge was to build the "best tower" possible using 5-10 index cards. The goal of their main challenge will hopefully help to build student confidence in their abilities to make a change in the world around them through design. Students will participate in this design challenge that will help to impact the community in a positive way.
Gwen’s Garden Unveiling Honors Beloved Faculty Member
On what would have been her 62nd birthday, St. Philip’s celebrated the life, impact, and legacy of former Principal and Master Science teacher and Gardener, Gwendolyn Satterfield Barjon, with the official renaming of the community garden in her name, and the unveiling of a lovely mural painted by alumnus, Juan Hernandez, Jr. Students and faculty members shared remembrances through poetry, song, and stories. Gwen’s Garden will undergo an expansion and renovation over the coming months, thus increasing its role as both a vital educational tool for our students and reliable resource for fresh produce for the community. A fitting legacy to a woman who one faculty member proclaimed, “the earth, the dirt, the plants, listened to her hands.”

AT A GLANCE: COMMUNITY IMPACT
A Dream Unfolds on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard
St. Philip’s work in Community Advancement is best described by our TRIPLE A rating: We are an Anchor, an Advocate and an Agent for Change. As a Neighborhood Change Agent, St. Philip’s strives to accelerate the community’s vision for positive change. We invest in neighborhood initiatives that create pathways of opportunity for people of all backgrounds and provide services and amenities that improve the well-being of our neighbors.
We have a dream … of a bustling, walkable Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, lined with mixed-use retail. We believe economic development is the key to igniting change in our community. Through economic development, we create hope, community, and a sense of what is possible.
A transformational project on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd will be a catalyst for positive change all along the boulevard and benefit our community and our city. This development project is the revitalization of a 12,000 square foot commercial structure on the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and Colonial Avenue. The project concept is the complete renovation of the existing commercial retail structure, creating modern leasable units.
The purpose of the project is to provide increased services to
the community and to bring hope by evidence of investment on the Martin Luther King Jr. Corridor. This project has been a true collaboration with the help of so many partners. It started with the acquisition of the property in December 2017 and acquisition/due diligence assistance from Candace Rubin, Sharon Morrison, EcoSystems Environmental Inc, Winstead and Stantec. In 2018, we partnered with Cornerstone Baptist Church and CitySquare on a collaborative revitalization effort for MLK Blvd. The Real Estate Council (TREC) selected this revitalization from over 40 competing ideas as their inaugural Dallas Catalyst Project (DCP).
We have a dream … of a
bustling, walkable Martin
Luther King Jr. Blvd, lined with mixed-use retail.
Through DCP, TREC has invested countless hours along with a financial commitment of $475K, and helped St. Philip’s secure major Pro-bono development support which is being provided from the Beck Group, Perkins & Will, Kimley-Horn, The Retail Connection, 42 Real Estate, among important others. We are excited to share that on October 28, The City of Dallas approved a $1M grant for this revitalization, allowing St. Philip’s to confidently move forward with the reconstruction and planned grand opening scheduled for 2021!
Ruthie’s is Rolling into South Dallas!
Great food to fill tummies and melt hearts is coming our way!
St. Philip’s is thrilled to announce that the anchor tenant of its transformative retail project will be Ruthie’s Rolling Café. The café will serve as the popular Ruthie’s Food Truck’s first brick and mortar location and a restaurant use, which was among the top two priorities expressed by our community during our yearlong equitable development planning process. What makes this collaboration even more exciting is that Ruthie’s has partnered with Café Momentum, founded by visionary Chef Chad Houser, to staff and operate the restaurant.
This partnership will not only bring a desired service to the neighborhood, but also transform young lives through their program that equips our community’s most at-risk youth with life skills, education, and employment opportunities. Once the restaurant is open, Ruthie’s, the brainchild and passion project of Ashlee Kleinert , a former St. Philip’s trustee and loyal friend, will feature a rotating sandwich each month that celebrates the community and reflects the flavors and taste preferences of residents.
St. Philip’s Gets its Neighbors to the Polls
This fall, St. Philip’s was honored to do its part to help its community members exercise their right to vote.
The 2020 Presidential election was one like no other, filled with high stakes, especially for those residing in disenfranchised inner-city communities, like South Dallas. This year, Lasheryl Walker, Community Outreach Director, worked to ensure St. Philip’s community neighbors were registered and had rides to the polls.
“With people being negatively impacted by the economy, jobs, COVID-19, we had to educate, inform, and mobilize people to get out and vote,” said Walker, who reached out to Faith in Texas to help get people registered. Members of Faith in Texas, a nonpartisan, multi-racial, multifaith grassroots movement working together to achieve economic, racial, and social justice for all people, spent weeks helping Aunt Bette Community Pantry’s clients and other Community Center participants register to vote.
It was particularly rewarding for Walker to witness a couple people register who had been on parole and thought they were forever ineligible to vote. Fortunately, the voter registration team assured them of their eligibility.
St. Philip’s also partnered with Innercity Community Development , Miles of Freedom, and Southern Dallas
"I feel that my vote matters, it counts, and it will speak for a lot of seniors as well."
Link to help transport members of the South Dallas Community to the polls. Wanda Leonard , a neighborhood senior who used the free transportation, said she wouldn’t have made it to the polls were it not for St. Philip’s. “A lot of people want to sit down and complain about a lot of things in the neighborhood but going around not voting doesn’t help. I feel that my vote matters, it counts, and it will speak for a lot of seniors as well,” she said.
Girl’s Night Out Program Goes Virtual
Every year, St. Philip’s hosts an engaging mentoring program called Girls Night Out (GNO) in collaboration with the Junior League of Dallas. Each month, girls who attend the School as well as our Community Center, enjoy a night full of food, fun and fellowship. This year, the program went virtual because at the end of the day, the girls we serve want to be mentored…and have fun, in spite of a world pandemic.
“I felt it was super important to keep Girls Night Out going,” explained Lasheryl Walker, Community Outreach Director. “We had really good momentum - the girls and the Junior League members looked forward to it every month.”
So far, the virtual sessions have had tremendous participation and turnout. Through the program, participants explore a different theme each month, from goal-setting, health and wellness, public speaking, to leadership. The fun offered through GNO is balanced with the mentoring they acquire through the regular interactions with the program facilitators, all successful women committed to instilling something positive in the girls, ages 6 – 13. Thankfully, the connections the girls have with each other and the Junior League members has not been lost through a virtual platform. As we continue Girls Night Out, we hope participants continue to gain a better sense of themselves and their power as emerging women.
Annual Community Thanksgiving Feast
On November 14th we hosted our Annual Thanksgiving Feast in a drive-through format that allowed us to safely serve 300 neighbors. Each family received a Thanksgiving box of nonperishable goods, produce, milk, and a turkey as part of the Pastors Turkey Box Giveaway 2020. A huge thank you to the Dallas Spurs, Liverpool Supporters Clubs, and other volunteers who were incredibly helpful. We are grateful to the sponsors of the Pastors Turkey Box Giveaway 2020 for helping us feed our community.

AT A GLANCE: ATHLETICS
For several decades, St. Philip’s has provided arguably the largest and most diverse athletics program for 4- to 14-year-olds in the southern sector of Dallas.
Programming Update
Due to COVID-19, St. Philip’s will continue to hold off on its dynamic Athletics program. It is our priority to keep our student athletes, coaches, and volunteers safe. We plan to resume baseball, basketball, soccer, track, and football with the Pop Warner League in Spring 2021.
Athletic Alumni Spotlight: Two Former Saints are Making Moves
From South Dallas to the Ivy League
College Freshman Anthony Andrews is preparing to play Defensive Back for Yale University, while pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering. A member and valedictorian of St. Philip’s Class of 2014, Andrews is a recent 2020 graduate of St. Marks School of Texas, where he was a three-sport athlete playing football, basketball, and track. His decision to go to Yale was made a little easier after realizing the school’s dedication to him and his family. “Their persistence is probably why I chose to go here.”
This year, all Ivy League schools have decided to cancel the football season due to COVID-19. With this being Anthony’s Freshman year, he says it’s an unfortunate situation, but it has given him time to focus on school work. For Andrews, it’s not just about football.
St. Philip’s also laid the foundation for Andrews to become the scholar athlete he is today. He even credits his toughness on the field and tenacity for winning, to his early years as a St. Philip’s Saint. Anthony is grateful to all of the coaches and teachers who helped mold him into the young man he is now.
Making Dreams a Reality
With over thirty college football offers, Skyline High School senior, Isaiah Nwokobia , says he’s living a dream. “I would've never thought I’d see some of my dreams coming true right now. In a few months, I'll be playing Division 1 college football,” said Nwokobia.
Isaiah currently plays Safety and Defensive Back for the Skyline Raiders and began his athletic career at St. Philip's as a 4-year-old in flag football. He played for the Saints until he aged out at 12. He credits his passion for the sport to St. Philip’s. “Every day the coaches were all in. It wasn’t just about football with them,” he explained. “Coach Jimmy was more like a father figure. It was a family environment (at St. Philip’s).”
Last year, Nwokobia committed to play football at Southern Methodist University, with plans to study Business. He hopes to graduate college and go on to play in the NFL…if it’s in God’s plans for his life. The only thing more important than football for this talented young man is the woman who provided for him all of his life. “My biggest goal is to take care of my mom. She’s done a lot for me, so I just want to make sure she’s good.”
Every time Isaiah is in South Dallas, he drives by St. Philip’s’ football field. He feels the memories rushing back, reminding him where it all began. One day, he hopes to come back to watch a game and share with the young athletes that their dreams can come true, too.
VOLUNTEER/DONOR SPOTLIGHT
Loyal Friends Spur Fundraising and Volunteer Recruitment for Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry
Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry holds a special place in Dina Dixon’s heart. A long-time volunteer at the North Texas Food Bank, when our food pantry opened, she was there on our very first day to volunteer.
Socially, Dina and her boyfriend, Shane Keller, are involved in the Dallas Spurs Supporters Club, which is a fan club for the Tottenham Hotspurs, a London based soccer team in the English Premier League, similar to the NFL. This dedicated group meets at the Irishman Pub on Saturday and Sunday mornings to watch the “Spurs” play. Four years ago, they had the idea to have a donation bucket at their watch parties to raise funds to purchase Thanksgiving foods that were not normally stocked at the pantry. That year, they raised $367 and doubled the amount the following year. In 2018-19, they made their donation drive a more permanent, all season event raising close to $3,000. Last year, the amazing supporters proudly raised over $6,000!
In addition to fundraising, Dina and Shane consult with Kelvin Browning, Manager at Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry, before buying the most needed and hardest to source items, loading them in their SUV and delivering them to the pantry, weekly. This is personal for Dina and Shane, and clearly it has become a focused passion for the Dallas Spurs Supporters Club, as this past October, 60 Spurs members played in a golf tournament held at Bridlewood Country Club, with Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry as the beneficiary of the fundraising!
Thanks to Dina and Shane’s selfless commitment, members are now volunteering regularly with the pantry. Additionally, a new landing page on St. Philip’s website has been created for the Supporters Club, enabling members to donate money directly to the Pantry and also to sign up to volunteer. May this relationship continue to grow and benefit our neighbors in South Dallas.

LIFE AFTER ST. PHILIP'S
Middle and High School Rules
Jaden-Jhames Young, Class of 2020
7th grader at St. John’s Episcopal School
As Jaden-Jhames navigates his new school, he is reminded of Philippians 4:13, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. “My experience at my middle school, St. John’s Episcopal School, is exciting, new, pleasant and something that I cherish.” The words of Albert Einstein also remind him to keep pushing through difficult times, “You have not given up until you stop trying.”
“The St. Philips School and Community Center Creed has taught me to be resilient and persevere, especially during virtual at home learning. I experienced the outcomes of hard work, high expectations, and the power of prayer while in attendance at St. Philip’s. I am more confident, courageous, and spiritually grounded.”
Chloe Draper, Class of 2018
9th grader at Bishop Dunne Catholic School
“My experience at Bishop Dunne has been great! I've met so many new people and have been able to grow as a person. My educational experience has pushed me to work harder and be more focused while my extracurricular activities have helped me to become a better dancer and teammate as a whole.”
Chloe is very active as a student athlete. She is a second-year member of the Falconettes Drill Team and was recently elected team chaplain. “I am very grateful for this opportunity and it has encouraged me to apply to other positions.” She is also a member of the National Junior Honors Society where she serves as the treasurer and is excited about her decision to have also joined the African American Awareness Club.
“Something I learned at St. Philip’s that has helped me on my journey is that I never have to be ashamed of my God or my race. Going to a very diverse Catholic school, there are several people who don’t have the same views or values as me. Learning these values at a young age showed me how to stand my ground for my beliefs while simultaneously respecting other individuals' opinions.”

Striking Out on Her Own
Alumnus Chassidy Guidry (Class of 2003) started her own law firm earlier this year practicing estate planning with an emphasis on serving African-Americans in her community with asset retention and legacy building. She is a graduate of Crandall High School (2009); Prairie View A&M University (2013), and Paul M. Hebert Louisiana State University Law Center (2016). “Often times, assets are tied up after death resulting in increased stress and expenses for loved ones. My goal is to combat these issues and assist as many people as possible with implementing proper plans to ensure generational wealth.”
She shares that while a student at St. Philip’s, “I learned the value of community. The students, teachers, parents, and faculty all worked together to provide a holistic learning experience that benefited everyone connected to St. Philip’s. This concept of supporting others has been essential in my career and provides a foundation for my continued desire to serve others in a meaningful way.”

Village Strong: St. Philip’s Rallies to Help Alum Beat COVID
Austin College student and St. Philip’s alum, Chris Miller (Class of 2011), was in the fight for his life just a few short months ago, battling COVID-19, and in critical condition. Now, he is preparing to leave the hospital to recover and continue rehab.
Hospitalized in August, at one point, Chris’ lungs were hemorrhaging and the doctor’s called the family in. That was a dark day. His sister, Honoria Bush (Class of 2002), attributes his recovery to the wonderful nurses and doctors at the hospital who did everything they could to help Chris. With visitation restrictions and Miller’s family living in Dallas, hospital staff helped them be a part of every small victory.
Chris is a walking miracle! He is now breathing on his own, talking, walking with assistance, laughing, and making jokes. He will soon go home and is so thankful for his family and the St. Philip’s village rallying and praying on his behalf. “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed but not in despair; persecuted but not abandoned; struck down but not destroyed. We will always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.” 2 Corinthians 4:8-10
Chris is a walking miracle! He is now breathing on his own, talking, walking with assistance, laughing, and making jokes.
A GoFundMe was started by fellow alum and family friend Dr. Jesse Hernandez (Class of 2001) to help with Miller’s surmounting medical bills.
Alumnus Earns Ph.D. in Education Policy, Organization, & Leadership
Alicia Robinson was only enrolled as a student at St. Philip's for three years, 2nd-4th grades (1993-1996), but her time with the school and its doctrines has lasted a lifetime. She recently and successfully defended her dissertation, earning her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her dissertation, entitled "A Voice for the Voiceless: African American Student Engagement with Children's Defense Fund Freedom Schools” is a culmination of her nearly 15 years of engagement with the Children's Defense Fund Freedom Schools program.
Several years ago, Alicia served at the Dallas Bethlehem Center as a servant leader intern during their Summer Reading Enrichment Program. During that time, she engaged with numerous youth who were residents in the South Dallas area, and many of the students expressed a shared sentiment, "I Hate School.” She explains that “due to this disheartening but authentic reality, I made it my mission to gain a better understanding of their motivations behind this statement and their overall motivation for school, while also determining what causes them to fully engage in learning in an effort to reach academic achievement.”
The decision to pursue her doctoral degree was influenced by this intent to bless others and truly believing, "The sky is the limit, if I just put my mind in it.”
limit, if I just put my mind in it.”
"Dr. Flowers set the bar for me. His example in reaching the highest degree in the field demonstrated the perseverance necessary to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most,” she said. Alicia’s research is entitled “A Voice for the Voiceless” because the most marginalized populations, which St. Philip's places emphasis on, should be allotted a platform for their stories and experiences to be heard with authenticity. “St. Philip's creates spaces for these individuals, and it is my mission to continue striving for this throughout my career.”
If it is to be it's up to me …
Of the many lessons the now, Dr. Robinson, learned as a Saint, the one that resonates the most is serving others. The decision to pursue her doctoral degree was influenced by this intent to bless others and truly believing, "The sky is the
Alicia’s professional goals include building her teaching experience and obtaining a principalship. Additionally, she would like to seek a superintendent role or pursue a school board position in the near future. Ultimately, Dr. Robinson has her sight set on being the US Secretary of Education. In the words of the St. Philip’s Creed, she has “determined (and claimed) her path!”
IN MEMORIAM of two dynamic alumni
Their Brightness SHINES for All Time
Wishing the families of Jaylen and Lauren peace, comfort, and courage for the time ahead and loving memories to forever hold in your hearts. St. Philip’s is blessed to have helped shape their full, productive lives. In success, they did not stray.
JAYLEN JOHNSON (1994 – 2020)
Jaylen Gabriel Johnson, age 26, was the beloved son of Renee Johnson, a former PSA President. After St. Philip’s, Jaylen attended Parish Episcopal School and graduated from Johnson High School in San Antonio, in 2013. He pursued his studies at Austin Community College, where he received his Certification in Radio/Television/Film in 2017. The following year, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia to follow his dreams. In life, Jaylen possessed a beautiful smile and spirit and was a gift and blessing to his family and friends. Through the gift of organ donation, his untimely departure from us is a gift to others.
DR. LAUREN DOBBS WIGGINS (1981 – 2020)
Paula and Kevin Wiggins’ only daughter, Lauren Nichelle Dobbs Wiggins, exuded love, creativity, and intellect. An ophthalmologist at Baylor Scott and White in Dallas, Lauren was a graduate of The Hockaday School, Harvard College, and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Before entering medical school, she taught fourth grade math and science for two years at St. Philip’s. A gifted violinist, she was a member of several youth and college orchestras during her lifetime. At Hockaday, Lauren was president of the Debate Club and Gospel Choir and the recipient of the Sudie Duncan Award for leadership and service to the school community.
Lauren was a life-long, active member of the St. Luke "Community" United Methodist Church. For many, her most outstanding quality was the size of her heart. Lauren loved! She loved God, her family, her friends, her patients, her students, her Church family, and her co-workers. It was a joy and privilege to host a private memorial service in celebration of her life, at St. Philip’s. God has a first chair waiting for Lauren in His heavenly orchestra!
CELEBRATING OUR VOLUNTEERS & UNSUNG HEROES
Aunt Bette's Community Pantry (ABCP) was one of the few pantries still operating during the coronavirus pandemic. We modified our operations in accordance with current social distancing guidelines and operated with a "low touch" assembly and distribution model, providing prepackaged boxes of staple foods for curbside distribution to our clients. This critical service would not have been possible without our staff members and loyal volunteers.
A big THANK YOU to the following friends for their commitment to the pantry and the St. Philip’s ministry:
Honda Helpers for providing volunteers every month to help serve our clients.
Lael Brodsky for volunteering every Monday since the start of the pandemic.
Chelsea Livingston, a regular volunteer before COVID-19, who continued to serve our clients every Monday throughout the pandemic.
Rob Neil for volunteering at the pantry two days a week throughout the pandemic.
Regina Walton for continuously volunteering at the pantry every Monday.
Jack Tierney, a former lacrosse coach of 10 years for St. Philip's, for becoming a regular pantry volunteer.
Dallas Chapter of National Charity League (NCL) for establishing a partnership to serve the St. Philip’s neighborhood community. Girls and their mothers have signed up for shifts to transport surplus meals from Snap Kitchen stores several days a week.
Steve and Renee Mecom for committing to weekly shifts at the pantry. In addition, each week they pick up large loads of surplus foods from Super Target at Skillman/ Abrams Road.
Will and Ginny Searcy for volunteering in the pantry during the summer and transporting Snap Kitchen surplus meals on a regular basis.
A Special Shout-out to St. Philip’s Operations Team
Our Operations team are the true unsung heroes of St. Philip’s! Facing several challenges at the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic, these critical members of our staff have worked on the frontlines for several months, putting themselves and their families in harm’s way. “It was so much that was unknown, and we didn’t know what to expect but we knew everyone else would be depending on us to keep them safe,” said Adam Dominguez, Operations Director. According to Dominguez, once new safety protocols were put into the place, including daily temperature checks and closure of the building, with limited access, there was a greater comfort among the team.
Over the last eight months, Operations secured specialized disinfectants and equipment to continually sanitize the campus from top to bottom, ensuring the School, Community Center, and Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry operates in the safest, most effective way. Monday through Friday, they are on campus from open to close, implementing new safety protocols, and cleaning measures. Over the summer, new staff was hired to help meet the growing demands of this small team.
“We were recently audited through Clean Slate and the report showed St. Philip’s is going beyond other schools in the US with our COVID safety protocols,” shared Dominguez. Clean Slate is an environmental health and safety initiative for independent schools in response to the recent pandemic.
Many thanks to our Operations team for the hard work and dedication they’ve exhibited for the children, families, volunteers, and fellow faculty/staff of St. Philip’s School and Community Center. Theirs is more than a job, but a selfless act!

An Appeal for Support
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. ~ Matthew 5:16
The star is the heavenly symbol of a prophecy fulfilled and the shining hope for humanity. It is, too, the light of Christ overshadowing the darkness, renewing our strength in His faithfulness. 2020 has been a year for the record books. One, requiring our community be drenched in LOVE and LIGHT!
For 75 years, the St. Philip’s School and Community Center ministry has chosen to be a lighthouse of hope in South Dallas and a trusted resource for quality and accessible educational, athletic, and social services to thousands. The light of these times has also been a revealing one, reminding us of the struggle and inequities so many of our families and neighbors face in providing food, an education, and even healthcare to their families. We have been reinvigorated in our effort to provide a holistic approach to serving and healing our community, especially in this time of increased need.
Won’t you join us in this important work? SHINE a spotlight on the noble mission of St. Philip’s this holiday by making a meaningful contribution during this season of hope. By doing so, YOU will ensure God’s light shines bright on every child, every family, and every block St. Philip’s touches, thus transforming our community and our world by FAITH, EDUCATION, and SERVICE…for another 75 years!
May His loving spirit bless you abundantly today and always.

Wish Makers Made Change Possible EVENT RECAP
The compassionate support of our donors empowered us to move beyond wishing, to action! This year’s North Texas Giving Day campaign was the most successful to date, with St. Philip’s surpassing its monetary goal, raising over $140,000 to make wishes come true for those we serve.
Many thanks to Michael Guidry and Ashlee Kleinert for serving as campaign Co-chairs. They, along with our board of trustees, lead the way to ensure St. Philip’s can continue its mission of transforming lives through FAITH, EDUCATION, and SERVICE in these challenging times. Thank you to all of our donors for ensuring positive change in the lives of every child, every family, and every block St. Philip’s touches. You are never given a WISH without also being given the power to make it come true!
Inaugural Food Pantry Fundraiser – Cookin’ with Aunt Bette – A Big Hit
Hosted by Honorary Chairs Ann Mahowald, Dotti Singhal, Abigail Sinwell and Tina Stansbury, Cookin’ with Aunt Bette, proved to be a deliciously fun event for a great cause – Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry. Participating chefs included Chef Chad Houser (Café Momentum), Chef Sharon Van Meter (3015 at Trinity Groves), Chef Tisha Crear (Recipe Oak Cliff), and a family of chefs – The Musco Family (of St. Philip’s) - who provided delightful cooking demonstrations of tasty dishes inspired by items typically found in the food pantry. All funds raised through the event will be matched 1:1 by the Perot Family to help endow the pantry, named in honor of their beloved Aunt Bette Perot. This endowment will ensure that the pantry continues to serve over 750 South Dallas families each year.

IN MEMORIAM
“Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day.”
SERENA SIMMONS CONNELLY (1970 – 2020)
Our prayers go out to the Simmons and Connelly families regarding the passing of a dear friend of St. Philip’s and many other worthy causes in North Texas. Known for her quiet, generous, and compassionate support of organizations committed to human rights, early childhood education, and anti-poverty, Serena passed away this spring after a fierce battle with cancer. St. Philip’s will forever be grateful for Serena’s generous support of our educational and technology initiatives. Most recently, she and her sister, Lisa Simmons, through the Simmons Sisters Fund at The Texas Women’s Foundation, provided funding to support St. Philip’s operations during the current crisis, our Dyslexia program, and future Performing and Visual Arts Pavilion. Heaven has gained a lovely angel!
ROGER HORCHOW (1928 – 2020)
St. Philip’s sends its sincerest condolences to the Horchow family – Regen, Lizzie, and Sally –in the passing of their dynamic father who left an indelible mark in the arts, educational, health, and public radio communities, both locally, and nationally. Horchow’s support of St. Philip’s educational initiatives began over 25 years ago. We are tremendously grateful for his and the Horchow family’s confidence and generosity over the years. One of Roger’s greatest legacies for St. Philip’s will be his work in helping to endow the School’s principal position – now the George T. Lee Jr. Principal - in honor of his good friend, George Lee. May his many good works live on in the hearts of many!
PAULA MOSLE (1930 – 2020)
Our prayers are with former trustee Jon Mosle, III, his wife, Jennifer, and family in the passing of his dear mother, Paula, this past summer. Paula was a lovely light and ambassador for the St. Philip’s ministry for over three decades. Like her son and late husband of 57 years, she, too, served as a trustee. An Oklahoma native, Paula was a member and past vestry of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. Over her lifetime, she served as a compassionate volunteer and in leadership roles for many local organizations, particularly educational institutions like St. Philip’s. A former teacher with a passion for Shakespeare, Paula could recite from memory his soliloquies until life’s end.
ELIZABETH “BETTE” RATHJEN (1999 – 2020)
St. Philip’s sends its sincerest condolences to the Rathjen and Perot families in the passing of their beloved Elizabeth Margot "Bette" Rathjen, a loving daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, and cousin. She was richly blessed and left this world knowing she was deeply loved. Elizabeth was known for her smarts, sassy, creativity, and humor. She began high school in the dance program at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts where she was sidelined by injury. She eventually transitioned to Chatham Hall in Virginia from which she graduated in 2018. After being away from Dallas for high school, Bette was thrilled to return to attend Southern Methodist University. At the time of her death, she was just completing her sophomore year. Hundreds of South Dallas households will be enriched by Elizabeth’s legacy through numerous gifts made to Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry, in her memory, over the last several months.
St. Philip’s would also like to extend its deepest sympathies and condolences to Ramona Bailey, Dean of Students and Family Affairs, in the passing of her mother, Atharie Menefee Nelson; to Board Trustee, Tim Weil , in the passing of his father, Christopher Maurice Weil; to Board Trustee, Brent Alfred , in the passing of his mother; and to Breanna Turnley, Individual and Alumni Giving Manager, in the passing of her beloved grandfather.
ANNUAL REPORT
A Message from Our Board Chair
Great things keep happening at St. Philip’s! The 2019-2020 fiscal year has been unique by any measure and demonstrates the importance of you, our wonderful supporters.
St. Philip’s and our treasured faculty and staff met and addressed expected issues of our growth and expansion of services, as well as completely unanticipated issues of conducting an effective, safe School and Community Center environment during a public health crisis. Our team assessed new considerations as the pandemic paused traditional in-person education and delivery of community services. Our School team carefully evaluated effective remote learning and hastened to provide students with key curriculum modifications and necessary devices and internet connectivity. As aptly named in the school, the abrupt shift to remote learning was “LITerally Virtual –Loving, Innovative, Together.”
The Community Center restructured our service programs to maximize safety, and better to deliver our services to clients in the neighborhood. The dedicated faculty and staff lead by revered leader, Dr. Terry Flowers, tackled continuation of effective, culturally sensitive, safe education to our students and their families. The faculty and staff were assisted in these undertakings by a remarkable board of directors who are deeply engaged to further the mission of St. Philip’s. The success of the WE BELIEVE CAMPAIGN was furthered by remarkable generosity of our donors, who this year frequently responded to these difficult times with even greater generosity. Our donors supported many unanticipated requirements for keeping our campus clean and safe, and expanding remote learning tools and platforms. The arrival of the pandemic put many of our neighbors in significant food distress. Our compassionate donors responded with enhanced financial support of Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry, expanded volunteer support, and access to a variety of expanded sources of fresh nutritional food.
This year saw the untimely loss of our dedicated friend, pillar of faith and stellar educator Mrs. Gwen Barjon. Mrs. Barjon was a mentor, counselor and sounding board, who creatively and artfully furthered the human spirit, education, science, and faith, for many, many students. She shared the light she brought to this world with all of us – students, families, faculty, staff, and volunteers. Gwen would want us to share that light with others and carry on with the important mission of St. Philip’s.
I offer deep seated thanks to all of you who gave of your time, your talents, your love, and resources to St. Philip’s this past year. Your efforts and generosity supported diverse solutions to education, community service, and hunger to our neighbors, thus helping St. Philip’s to transform the world and our community through our mutual service and support of our students, families, and neighbors. We are very fortunate to be your partners in this important work.
Working with you toward the mission of St. Philip’s,
David Cowling Board Chair
A Message from Our Foundation Chair
The St. Philip’s School and Community Center Foundation was established as a separate non-profit corporation in March 1997 to support St. Phillips School and Community Center (SPSCC) by soliciting, receiving, investing, and managing gifts, grants, contributions, and bequests to SPSCC. The mission of the Foundation is to support the long-term goals, purposes, and objectives of SPSCC.
We are staying the course with our conservative investment strategy through the ups and downs caused by the Covid uncertainty and keeping a more than usual open line of communication with our investment advisors. We continue to be emboldened by the success of the We Believe Campaign’s effort to grow our endowment in a significant way. The Foundation is very thankful for the community’s response to this historic campaign, which will embark on its 6th and final year in 2021. In May 2016, the Foundation switched its investment program to a low-cost, diversified series of index fund positions. As markets around the world have rallied, our investment results have been outstanding.
The combined effect of the We Believe Campaign and our investment returns has increased the value of the foundation’s assets to over $20M for the first time! This allowed the Foundation to distribute $788,000 to the operations of St. Philip’s School and Community Center the 2019-2020 fiscal year.
As we look ahead, we are delighted to be part of the St. Philip’s School and Community Center mission. I and the other trustees of the Foundation are pleased to be providing increased funds for tuition assistance, school operations, and critical community center programs. With continued financial support and lots of hard work, St. Philip’s will continue to be a beacon of hope in South Dallas…especially in these uncharted times.
Sincerely,
Dan Stansbury, Jr. Chairman

A Message from Our Friends of St. Philip's Chair
Friends of St. Philip's (Friends) was established in February 2019 as a group of men and women committed to supporting St. Philip's School and Community Center as ambassadors through service and fundraising. As we reflect on our first year as an auxiliary to St. Philip's, we want to express our gratitude for the leadership of our Founding Members and our almost 200 inaugural members.
During the past year, members have served our school and community in numerous ways:
• Hosted two Birthday Luncheons for faculty and staff.
• Volunteered in Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry.
• Hosted a faculty and staff Christmas Fiesta Luncheon.
• Presented Target gift cards to all faculty and staff at the Christmas Luncheon.
• Transported surplus Snap Kitchen meals.
• Served at both the annual Thanksgiving Feast and Christmas Store.
• Purchased and delivered yard signs to all faculty and staff during Appreciation Week.
• Provided dinner for all faculty and staff and their families with help from Ruthie’s Food Truck and the Philanthropy Department.
• Planned our first annual event – “Bingo, BBQ, & the Blues” (rescheduled for September 2021).
• Purchased and mailed Walmart gift cards and fabric face masks to all faculty and staff at in May 2020.
• Contributed $10,000 to SPSCC for its operating budget
Even though we postponed our major fundraiser, our dedication to supporting St. Philip's during the COVID-19 pandemic remains steadfast. Friends of St. Philip’s joins the hearts of the entire Dallas community navigating through these uncertain times, and we continue to seek ways to champion the good works of St. Philip’s.
We hope you will join us this year as Friends and would love for you to become more involved by joining our Board, which is expanding to allow more opportunities to serve our St. Philip’s community.
With gratitude,

Ways to Support St. Philip’s TIME, TALENT & TREASURE
St. Philip’s has thrived through the tremendous support provided by a dedicated community of alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends. For decades, St. Philip’s School and Community Center has embodied excellence, in large part because our community has given generously of its time, talents, and treasures. There are many creative opportunities to make a contribution to the important work of St. Philip’s School and Community Center.
PLANNED GIVING
St. Philip’s is excited to announce the establishment of the DR. BARBARA CAMBRDIGE GIVING CIRCLE, our planned giving program. Are you considering including St. Philip’s in your estate planning? If your family would like to leave a LASTING LEGACY at St. Philip’s by making contributions through a bequest to St. Philip’s in your will or naming St. Philip’s as a co-beneficiary in a life insurance policy, please contact our Philanthropy Department at aherod@stphilips.com or 214.421.5221 ext. 238, for more information.
CONSIDER EMPLOYEE CORPORATE GIVING
St. Philip’s receives designated funds through the United Way (#180), the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), and State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC).
DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT WITH MATCHING GIFTS
Many employers match gifts by current and retired employees. This is an easy way to double your monetary gift or place a monetary
value of your volunteer time to St. Philip’s School and Community Center. Contact the Human Resources office of your employer for the form to match your gift to St. Philip’s.
SECURITIES
Raymond James is the primary securities trader for St. Philip’s School and Community Center. By donating securities to St. Philip’s through Raymond James, 100% of the value of your securities is awarded to the School. Contact the Philanthropy Office for more information at philanthropy@stphilips.com or 214.421.5221 ext. 239.
SHOP AND SHARE
St. Philip’s benefits from your shopping with Kroger, Tom Thumb, Target and GoodSearch.
THE GIFT OF TIME
