Spokane Symphony 2022-2023 Season Brochure

Page 1

STEP INTO THE EXTRAORDINARY Dear Friends, The Spokane Symphony has been thrilling audiences in the Inland Northwest for 76 years, and our 77th season won’t disappoint! From our nine classical Masterworks weekends, to our five Pops concerts and numerous special events, we promise to bring you a huge range of music and entertainment certain to delight your ears and nourish your soul. Guest conductors in the upcoming season include two previous and beloved music directors, Fabio Mechetti and Eckart Preu, plus we’re honored to feature six-time Grammy Award winner Leonard Slatkin, one of the most celebrated and soughtafter conductors of our time. We have wonderful young and well-known soloists coming to play with us, including the return of violinist Benjamin Beilman, whose stunningly dramatic Spokane Symphony concert in 2017 left audiences breathless. Local legend Zuill Bailey will be performing Elgar’s poignant Cello Concerto.

2

Over the years, we’ve started a number of Spokane’s favorite traditions that we’re delighted to continue: Beethoven’s Ninth on New Year’s Eve, the music of Harry Potter around Halloween, the free Labor Day concert in Comstock Park, as well as bringing movies back to the Fox Theater—with the full orchestra playing the score live! We’re also proud to bring to life a wide range of community engagement and education work, including talks and teaching plus concerts and projects where the skills of our musicians and staff are used to enhance learning, growth and healing. We live in hectic, divisive and stressful times. I believe that music of all genres has the ability to help us relax, heal and find common ground. I look forward to sharing our music with you soon. There’s never been a better time to unplug from the daily grind and step into the extraordinary! James Lowe, Music Director

By turns colorful, elegant, grotesque and terrifying, Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique takes the listener on a journey through the fevered mind of a young man chasing unrequited love. Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto is nobly heroic, and Jessie Montgomery’s string orchestra work, Starburst, explodes with energy and propulsion.

SPOKANE SYMPHONY | FOX THEATER BOARD OF TRUSTEES PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Friends of the Spokane Symphony and The Fox Theater: Thank you for the opportunity to share some thoughts as we showcase the upcoming 2022-2023 season. And thank you for your continued support of the Spokane Symphony and The Fox Theater. We wouldn’t be here without the community’s support, guidance and direction. The 2022-2023 season is an expression of community, hope and optimism, and our desire as an organization to be part of the healing and rebuilding process. We have faced the difficulties of the past two years and together we are moving forward and turning the page looking at the future with optimism. We strongly believe that part of our mission as an organization is to share the healing power of music with all. The 20222023 season is an example of that commitment. The breadth and depth of performances and enhanced community activities signify our resolve to touch as many lives as we can with our programs and performances. The upcoming season has something for everyone. From the classics to the movies, from the popular and entertaining to the nostalgic and sublime, this season has it all. Please join us so that together we can enjoy the unique experiences that the Spokane Symphony and The Fox Theater have in store for all of us. Thank you again, and hope to see you soon. Best regards: Dr. Frank Velázquez President, Spokane Symphony and Fox Theater Board of Trustees
